IELTS Writing Task 2 Model Answer: Obesity in children – causes and effects

feel free to call us    +61.4.50973975      [email protected]

IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic

The percentage of overweight children in western society has increased by almost 20% in the last ten years.   Discuss the causes and effects of this disturbing trend.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

In recent times, childhood obesity has become an issue in the western world , as it has increased by 20% in the last decade. In this essay, I will shed some light on the factors contributing to this problem and will also suggest some solutions for the same.

There are several reasons for pediatric obesity. Firstly, the widespread use of junk food as an alternative to healthy diet is one of the prominent causes. One good illustration of this, is the growing popularity of fast food chains and their increasing availability in most of the cities and towns in the western world. Secondly, it is also possible to say that the sedentary lifestyle adopted by many western families has affected their children, and this problem is significantly augmented by the children’s lack of exercise. Finally, although not a major cause , but the lack of parental control over the amount of time their children spend playing video games is also a contributing factor to childhood obesity.

overweight essay ielts

However, solutions are available to tackle this problem. Firstly, schools should focus a great deal more on physical education programs. In fact, a recent study carried out in a group of primary schools in Sydney has concluded that, spending 30 minutes a day performing various physical activities by students has significantly reduced obesity among them by 25% in one year. Another possible solution is to encourage parents to restrict the amount of time allowed to their children for playing video games. A particularly good example here is the various applications which are released by consoles and personal computer operating systems used by parents to help organize their children`s schedule.

Thus, even though, childhood obesity is a growing problem in the western world, mainly caused by eating fast food, lack of physical activity and excessive video gaming, these problems are not insurmountable; since, schools and parents are able to solve these problems, and they could should start by considering the solutions suggested above.

IELTS Model Essay: Problems-Solutions Essay (weight and health)

welts-model-essay-problem-solution

Here is another of my IELTS model essays  for IELTS Writing Task 2 . It’s a problems-solutions essay question:

In some countries the average weight of people is increasing and their levels of health and fitness are decreasing. What do you think are the causes of these problems and what measures could be taken to solve them?

Cambridge IELTS 8 Test 4 (Academic)

This task is asking you to discuss the CAUSES of the problem – why are people gaining weight, and why they less fit and healthy? – and to suggest some SOLUTIONS.

Note: you must discuss the CAUSES of the problem, not the problem itself. If you discuss the problem of being overweight (e.g. you write about diabetes and heart disease), then your band score for Task Response will be limited, probably to Band 5.

One potential problem with this task is there is a lot you could write about! But if you want a high band score, it’s better to write a few ideas in detail , rather than a lot of ideas briefly.

Note: in my plan I’ve clearly separated “increasing weight” from “decreasing health and fitness”, and I’ve developed one clear idea for each. The causes of these problems probably overlap, so you could write about the causes together…but if you get a mean IELTS examiner, they might think you haven’t covered all parts of the question. So to be safe, I’ve dealt with the causes separately.

  • too much carbohydrate in food, e.g. sugary drinks, junk food with rice and pasta
  • people take car everywhere, no walking
  • more people do seated work in offices than in past
  • Governments need to force food producers to reduce sugar content, e.g. with sugar tax
  • Increase fuel tax to make car travel more expensive
  • Personal resonsibility: walk more, watch what you eat

So that’s my plan. Now I know what to write. Here’s my essay.

Over the last few decades, rising obesity and a drop in people’s overall health and fitness have become a major concern in many countries, especially those in the developed world.

One of the main causes of increasing weight amongst the population is because so much food and drink contains large amounts of carbohydrates. Junk food, for example, tends to contain high quantities of cheap pasta and rice, while soft drinks often contain large amounts of sugar. If these carbohydrates are not burned up through exercise, they will simply be converted by the body into fat, leading to weight gain.

However, people are getting less exercise, which means that not only will they gain weight, they will also experience lower levels of health and fitness. One of the main reasons for this lack of exercise is our increasingly sedentary lifestyle. Whereas in the past, many people used to be engaged in manual labour such as factory work or farming, today they are more likely to be sat in an office hunched over a computer. Add to that the fact that people are more likely to commute to work by car, rather than walk or cycle, and we can see why people are getting fatter and less healthy.

There are some solutions to this problem that governments could provide, such as a sugar tax. In countries where this has been introduced, such as the U.K., this has led to drinks’ manufacturers reducing the amount of sugar in their products. I also feel that higher levels of tax on petrol might make car drivers think twice about whether they should really take the car out on the road. Ultimately, however, it is up to individuals to take more responsibility for their own health and fitness. They could make the effort to walk more and take the car less, and make better choices regarding their diet using information that is widely available on the Internet.

IELTS Cause and Effect Essay

These essays often create confusion for IELTS test takers. Why? Because very often test takers confuse these with problem and solution essays, and this costs them band scores in Task Achievement.

In these essays, you need to write about the causes of these problems and the effects they have, NOT the problems and their solutions .

Sample Cause and Effect Essay topic

Today more people are overweight than ever before.

What are the primary causes of this?

What are the main effects of this epidemic?

The planning stage

Before you begin your IELTS writing task 2 , make sure you understand the essay topic. Clearly, it is about obesity, but if you write an essay with suggestions on what measures could be taken to help people achieve a healthy weight, this will give you a lower band score.

Look at the first question:

Here, you must come up with ideas for why people are more overweight nowadays. What do you think are the causes of these problems? Why is it so difficult to maintain a healthy weight nowadays? What changes in our society have made people heavier than they were 30, 40 or 50 years ago? Two ideas are enough.

  • less time to exercise and prepare healthy food
  • abundance of fast food and unhealthy food

Look at the second question:

What problems does obesity cause? Who is affected and how? Again, come up with 2 ideas.

  • higher mortality rates and illness
  • strain on the economy

Remember that for each idea, you need support. Support can be evidence, like statistics that prove your idea, or further explanation about why or how your idea is true.

  • less time to exercise and prepare food/ sedentary lifestyle-> Harvard University study shows that people are working on average 10 hours more per week than they were 40 years ago
  • abundance of fast food and unhealthy food -> provides a low-cost, easy solution to meal preparation but poor quality and high in fat
  • higher mortality rates and illness-> Being an unhealthy weight is associated with higher levels of strokes, heart disease and diabetes, which can lead to death
  • strain on the economy -> illness leads to lost productivity in the workplace and higher health care costs

The writing stage

With brainstorming completed, you can begin writing the introduction to your IELTS cause and effect essay. 2-4 sentences are enough.

  • Introduce the topic
  • Mention that there are several causes of obesity
  • Say that the problem creates serious effects on individuals and society

Do you have to say what the causes and effects are in the introduction? Not necessarily. If you can briefly mention them by name, then you can, but if doing so requires a lengthy explanation, bypass this and go straight to writing your body paragraphs.

Do not spend too much time on your introduction. The introduction of an IELTS essay needs to be concise and contain the required information but a better band score will be achieved by spending time developing your body, not the introduction.

Band 9 sample introduction

In countries around the world, the rates of obesity are skyrocketing nowadays. This is a situation that has multiple causes, creating effects that can be felt not only by the individual but by society as a whole. This essay will address the causes and effects of increased obesity, using statistics from Harvard University to provide evidence and support.

Body paragraph one - causes

Tips for structure.

In addition to solid ideas and support, a well-written paragraph also needs a clear topic sentence to introduce the central idea. You may also end with a statement of conclusion, which essentially is a rephrasing of your topic sentence.

Band 9 sample body paragraph one

A variety of factors have contributed to the rise in rates of obesity, all of which can be attributed to changes in our way of life. One such change is our increasingly sedentary lifestyle, brought on in part by more work. For example, a recent study by Harvard University shows that around the world, people are working on average 10 hours more per week than they were 40 years ago. As a result, people are sitting more and have even less time to focus on their health and fitness than they did in the past. Our increased work hours have created another problem related to our diet. With fewer hours at home, more and more people are turning to fast food and other unhealthy alternatives for their meals, which have become widely available and inexpensive, instead of cooking healthy food. The result of these issues is a society with epidemic levels of obesity.

Body paragraph 2 - effects

Many students struggle with how to create a solid link between the two body paragraphs. In an IELTS cause and effect essay, the topic sentence simply needs to introduce that the problem has a variety of effects. There can be a reference to the cause, if appropriate.

Band 9 sample body paragraph two

This rise in obesity has far-reaching effects, both on an individual and a societal level. For the individual, being overweight has been linked with higher mortality rates and illness. More specifically, people suffering from an unhealthy weight are known to have higher incidences of strokes, heart disease and diabetes. Additionally, obese people on average have a lower life expectancy than their normal weight counterparts. For society, with more citizens reaching obesity levels, a strain on our economy is created. Increased illness means that employees are taking more sick leave, resulting in a loss of productivity. Furthermore, additional healthcare is needed to treat obesity-related illness, adding costs that affect the patient, the employer and the healthcare system. Therefore, it is clear that obesity is a health crisis that reduces quality of life and poses problems for the economy, and in turn, society.

Writing the conclusion

Again, aim for brevity. It is possible to create a solid conclusion to your IELTS essay in two to three sentences.

A well-written conclusion needs to rephrase the topic again, mentioning that obesity is a problem with a number of factors and effects that are felt throughout society.

The last sentence should leave a thought-provoking statement for the examiner. This could be a prediction for the future or a statement highlighting the seriousness of the problem.

Band 9 sample conclusion

In conclusion, our sedentary lifestyle, extended work hours and consumption of unhealthy food has led countries around the world to high levels of obesity. The result of this trend affects all levels of society. It is imperative that measures are taken to solve this epidemic before it is too late.

Grammar - tenses

Band 9 essays need to show a wide range of grammar. One way to do this is to use a variety of tenses appropriately and accurately. In each of the paragraphs no fewer than 3 tenses were used.

A variety of factors have contributed to the rise in rates of obesity, all of which can be attributed to changes in our way of life.

For example, a recent study by Harvard University shows that around the world, people are working on average 10 hours more per week than they were 40 years ago.

Lexical Resources

Some topic-specific vocabulary will earn you higher marks in the lexical resources criterion.

  • sedentary lifestyle
  • epidemic levels
  • on a societal level
  • mortality rates
  • higher incidences of strokes
  • loss of productivity
  • health crisis
  • poses problems

Cause and effect essays are some of the easier tasks to write because you do not need to have a position and support it. They require a little knowledge of the topic, but remember, IELTS is a language test, not a knowledge test, so feel free to draw from personal experience.

Practice writing these types of essays but more importantly, get feedback for your writing. The team at IELTSPODCAST.COM is available to correct your essays and give you expert guidance quickly and affordably.

Obesity Essays

overweight essay ielts

Wow, I like your essay, a lot of words that I did not understand
Jan 12, 2015

I strongly believe that both components mentioned which are the growing of fast food counters along with parent’s attention deficit over their children's health status, could be blamed for the causes of overweight young people.

In terms of fast food counters, it should not be solely pointed as the contribution factor towards this matter. The increment of cow milk consumption in toddlers, in a change from breastfeeding milk, is also in charge guilty. Research conducted on this has proven that obesity is common among babies who were given cows milk instead of being breastfed. Fast food, on the other hand, contains high fats and unsaturated fatty acids, which are hazardous for well being not only in children.

Also, parents lack of attention to their children's eating habits, must also taken seriously. They must acknowledge the importance of introducing nutritious meals to children. Children under five years of age, for instance, are best given high protein food, which accounts for brain development and boosting their cognitive ability. And as for obesity, one must be alerted to its impacts on children's health status for it has been recognized as one of the major factors resulting in cardiovascular disease, diabetes and stroke.

In conclusion to this essay, parent’s knowledge of healthy life styles and early introduction to this for children must be given more emphasis to help anticipate the increasing numbers of overweight young people. And in addition, governments along with society must also hold full responsibility for children's well being in general. It might be necessary in the future to create a policy controlling the opening of fast food outlets.
May 07, 2017

it should not be counters, it should be fast food outlets.

Counters sound like countering an argument.

Causes of and Solutions to Child Obesity

by Megan Lanzuela (Philippines)

Modern children are suffering from the diseases that were once considered to be meant for adults only. Obesity is a major disease prevalent among children. What are the causes and what solutions can be offered? According to statistics, a high percentage of young children are being afflicted with obesity. This dreaded disease which is thought to prevail among adults becomes a problem for adults as well. It can be said that there are various factors that we can look into why such illness occurs. Primary among its causes is diet. It is only in this generation that kids are exposed to different fast foods. What this chains offer are all fast junk foods -low in nutritional content but saturated with fats and salt. Absurd as it may seem, children find it more appealing and delectable than eating plain green vegetables. One way to solve this is for parents to implement a stricter rule on how frequent their child can eat fast foods. They should also exert extra effort on how to introduce vegetables in the diet in a creative way. Hence, at an early age they will already know how to maintain a well balanced diet without depriving themselves of some pleasures. Another culprit that we can point out is the lack of physical activity. In the early days, you can find a lot of children playing and running along the streets but today all you can see are children attached to their tablets and eyes focused on computer screens. Instead of burning fats that ore that they accumulate it through this manner. The way for this is for parents to set a time limit on the use of gadgets and encourage their children to engage different sports. Creating a more stimulating environment wherein children can move and play around will in some ways curb their chances in being obese. Ont the final note, this increasing number of obesity among kids will not stop unless proper action must be actively taken most especially by the parents. Even at a young age it must be instilled in the young minds of these children the implications that obesity has on their health. *** Help this student to improve their IELTS score by offering comments and advice on their Essay on the Causes of and Solutions to Obesity in Children

Overweight Children

by Jirussa Gosumbonggot (Thailand)

In some countries the average weight of people is increasing and their level of health and fitness is decreasing. What do you think are the causes of these problems and what measures could be taken to solve them? Nowadays, obesity has been one of a major health issues among populations in many parts around the world, especially in developed countries. This essay will discussed the causes relating to a rise of overweight population and solutions to tackle with them. The prominent cause of obesity is a social transformation. In these days, business environment is becoming more competitive than in the past, which makes people have to work harder to earn money for living and survive. As a consequence, they tend to have less time to exercise. Furthermore, preparing food themselves on a daily basis can be impossible to many people as they have a tight schedule of work on weekdays, therefore, ready-to-eat meals and junk food becomes their choice of food, which they tend to loss in nutrients. Consumption in this types of food in a long-term could possibly leads to various health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Although these problems have caused a great threat to public health in many areas around the world, it can be tackled if these measures are taken cautiously. Governments should increased investment in nutrition promotion and educational programmes to raise awareness to public on the importance of being healthy. For instance, running a campaign to encourage people to cook food themselves instead of dependent on fast food, which home cooked meals contain more balanced in nutrients than processed food. Another approach is that governments should allocate more budgets on building facilities that are accessible to ensure healthy lifestyle of citizens. For example, build more public gyms and parks. People will be more aware to exercise when they have time. In conclusion, to decrease the number of overweight population in every countries is both a responsibility for governments and citizens. Information regarding to serious impact of getting overweight must be passed through generations to promote healthy lifestyle and increase both physical and emotional well-being to everyone. ***** You can feedback on this child obesity essay by clicking the link below.

IELTS Essay - Parents and Overweight Children

Overweight Children Essay

Overweight Children Essay

Parents of obese children should be punished for making their children overweight. Do you agree or disagree? It is argued that obese children’s parents should be held responsible and punished for making their children fat. They should be considerate about their children’s health. This essay agrees with this opinion because parents should take care of their children’s diet and should make them health cautious. Parents have the power to take control of their children’s diet and make them eat healthy food. This will fulfill their children’s body needs which will help in their growth. Eating junk food is bad for health and will make children fat when consumed excessively. Fast foods, for instance, burgers and pizzas will cause obesity over long-term consumption. Hence, parents should make a proper diet plan and make their children follow it. Parents, not only, should worry about their children’s health but should also make their children take care of themselves. Parents should make their children aware of the consequences of bad eating habits. They, for example, can show them what will happen to them like obesity if they consume junk food over a long period of time. This will make their children’s health cautious. In conclusion, I would say that parents should give priority to their children and their health over all other things. They can give their children a healthy life by making their children eat good and nutritious food and stay away from junk food. Otherwise, not only obesity but blood pressure and many other diseases will damage their children’s life. Hence, they should be held accountable for their children’s health and fitness.

Effective IELTS Essay Connectors for Writing Task 2 & Task 1

The Essay Writing section of the IELTS Writing Module can be a difficult task for many IELTS Aspirants. Thus, it is vital that you polish your essay writing skills before attempting the IELTS.

Below is a sample IELTS Essay for the IELTS Essay topic:

In some countries, children are becoming overweight and unhealthy. Some people think that it is the responsibility of governments to solve the problem. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Increasing numbers of health issues are prevalent in young children in recent times. It is believed by some people that governments are liable to resolve this issue. I agree with this belief to some extent as in my opinion, this situation is the responsibility of both the government, the society and individuals.

[do_widget id=custom_html-25]

As the government is responsible for maintaining and improving the economic growth of its country, it must ensure steps in managing and enhancing the health of its youth. Unhealthy children would mean an unhealthy future generation of a nation, which would result in a slowdown of the economy as a whole. For example, an adult suffering from diabetes at an early age would not be able to consistently work efficiently as he would constantly suffer from lethargy and mental weakness.

However, health management targeting children is also the duty of society and its individuals. Health issues among children would get worse with age and might result in other severe diseases such as heart disorders and high blood pressure . These ailments might then be passed through generations and create a pool of unhealthy individuals  in the community. As a result, parents as well as other adults need to instill the importance of lifestyle and health management among young children in order to  equip them with long-term health consciousness. For instance, a family that follows a healthy routine and fitness regime would cultivate these good habits in their offspring  and other kids, and prevent these young children succumbing to health problems.

In conclusion, I agree to some extent that governments are responsible for solving the problem of unhealthy and overweight children. But, society and its individuals also  play a critical role in overcoming this situation.

Obesity is a much more serious issue with the present generation than it was with our predecessors. The rising number of ailments and health complications among the population is a direct consequence of an unhealthy lifestyle that is prevalent among youngsters and young adults. Although we ourselves are accountable for the well-being of our body, speaking in terms of the entire nation, the government is responsible to a certain extent for the general health of the public.

The cases of people suffering from disorders like excessive weight and fatigue are at an all-time high, and the more concerning aspect of this problem is that most of the sufferers of such afflictions are children. Furthermore, the difficulties caused by overweightedness are not limited to the inability to perform physically demanding activities but also leads to graver troubles like depression and social exclusion. Therefore, the authorities need to take necessary actions to avoid such adversities among the youth.

Moreover, the youth is considered to be the future of a country, and if this segment of the society is falling behind, then the downfall of the entire nation is imminent. Presently, the level of work that an average person can accomplish before they need to rest is perpetually decreasing and so is the ability to perform routine physical tasks. Such inefficiencies are caused by the lack of daily exercise and improper diets. Thus, the significance of adopting a vigorous lifestyle and forming healthy habits should be emphasized from an early age which can only be accomplished if the government makes physical education a compulsory part of the school curriculum.

However, the fundamental effort to overcome such problems has to be invested by the people as we are the owners of our bodies. Nonetheless, the aid of the administration will act as a boost to the endeavours of the public.

In conclusion, I would like to say that only by solving the plight of the present generation can we ensure that our successors do not find themselves in a similar predicament.

IELTS advantage disadvantage essay

Model answer for an ielts advantage disadvantage (outweigh) essay..

Updated:  February 2024

One of the most difficult essay types for many band 6 students is the ‘outweigh’ essay, which is an advantage disadvantage essay that is asking your opinion about which side you think is stronger.

The keyword in the task is ‘outweigh’. So you must cover the advantage and the disadvantage in this essay and clearly state your opinion. Do not only write about the advantages. you will need to cover both sides for a higher score in task response.

If you believe the advantage is stronger you must give your opinion on that in the thesis statement, but also make sure you show what a possible downside is. Have a look at the structures below for this type of essay.

Note that these are just guidelines. There is nothing mentioned in the marking criteria about the correct structure to use.

IELTS advantage disadvantage essay structure

Check this blog post on the 3 types of advantage disadvantage essays.

Model answer.

People now have the freedom to work and live anywhere in the world due to the development of communication technology and transportation. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

In recent times people have the choice of any location worldwide to live and work because of advances in communication technology and transport. Although there are downsides, this essay argues that the advantages are stronger as this has positively changed work life because people can work remotely via the internet from anywhere in the world.

One considerable advantage of technological innovation in transportation and communication is that it has revolutionised the way people work, bringing new opportunities and employment that did not exist before. In my view, this has had a positive impact on peoples lives due to the flexibility of combining work with travel. For instance, reliable Wi-fi networks and cloud computing, cheaper flights and high-speed trains allow people to live anywhere in the world while working online. Additionally, employees can participate in video conference calls and international forums, while entrepreneurs can run their businesses online from any location worldwide.

Admittedly, there are drawbacks in that some individuals have issues while living and working in different countries. In particular, culture shock and motivational problems while living outside their home country. This tends to lead to frustration for many remote workers who are relocated to offices in other countries. For example, multinational companies often neglect to train employees to deal with culture shock, as they assume that a positive experience on vacation in a new country will lead to easy cultural integration abroad. I believe communication technology has a positive role to play here, such as online coaching, which could help employees with motivation and cultural adjustment.

To conclude, despite the downsides, I believe that the benefits of communication technology and transport are greater because of new opportunities to travel and work online globally.

As you can see, I’m going with one advantage and one disadvantage here. This is ok for a Band 7+ but the essay must be well developed. If you have 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages, you may run out of time and end up with a very long essay at well over 300 words. Keep the essay concise.

You will notice in the thesis statement that I state:

‘Although there are downsides, this essay argues that the advantages are stronger as this has positively changed work life because people can work remotely via the internet from anywhere in the world.’

This shows balance as I have referred to the fact that there is a downside. In main body one, I cover the advantage and give my opinion on this. ‘ In my view, this has had a positive impact on people’s lives… .’

In main body two, I stated:   ‘Admittedly, there are drawbacks….’  this shows the examiner that I’m covering the downsides now.

In the conclusion I refer to the disadvantages again briefly then restate my opinion… ‘ To conclude, despite the downsides, I believe that….’

Band 8 Sample | Causes of Obesity

Band 8 Sample | Causes of Obesity

Essay topic

In some countries the average weight of people is increasing and their levels of health and fitness are decreasing. What do you think are the causes of these problems and what measures could be taken to solve them?

Band 8 essay sample

It is a fact that in some countries, the average weight of the citizens is shooting up while their fitness and health conditions are worsening. In my view this is mainly because of the food habits and modern lifestyle they follow. In this essay, I will examine these two factors and then propose a viable solution.

One of the foremost reasons for obesity is the consumption of unhealthy foods. Many people started to follow western food habits and eventually ended up eating high fat content foods like pizza and burger. Regular consumption of these fat rich foods will increase a person’s weight in a short span of time.

In addition to that, now-a-days, more and more people are living a sedentary lifestyle. They do not dedicate any time to do any kind of physical activity. As a result, they lose their resistance power. If this lifestyle continues then people will fall ill more frequently and lose their health permanently.

It is necessary that the government takes steps to open many sports complexes and fitness studios near residential communities. Most of the people who do not want to travel far to go to a sports center will be ready to use one if it is available nearby. In a study conducted by a popular newspaper 90% of the respondents said that they are willing to use the gym or any physical activity centers if they are within 3 kilometer radius.

To conclude, encouraging people to do more physical activities will not only improve their fitness and overall health but also help people to shed their weight.
