Psychology (BA)

Program description.

Psychology is the study of mind and behavior. The major in Psychology introduces students to the main concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in the field. Students gain the ability to think scientifically, creatively, and critically about human behavior and mental processes; to acquire the basic skills for conducting research in these areas; and to develop a general understanding of psychology as both a natural science and a social science.

Students grapple with overarching themes and persistent questions in psychology, such as the interaction of heredity and environment, variability and continuity of behavior and mental processes within and across species, free will versus determinism, the relation between mind and body, and applicability of general theories and measures to specific societal and cultural contexts. Topics of inquiry include cognition, sensation and perception, language and memory, child development and education, personality and individual differences, social interaction and group dynamics, intergroup relations, and the connection between the individual and society.

Students complete the major with realistic ideas about how to implement their psychological knowledge, skills, and values in occupational pursuits in a variety of settings. The NYUAD Psychology Program provides a solid preparation for graduate programs in basic and applied psychology, other psychology-related fields, and graduate programs in business, education, health, and law.

The Psychology major consists of: four required courses that provide the foundation for more advanced courses in psychology; four elective courses that cover broader subareas of psychology; two advanced electives that go deeper into specific areas of research and inquiry and that emphasize the scientific research and writing process; and the research seminar followed by a two-course capstone research experience. To ensure that students receive a broad training in psychology, students must complete two basic electives from the Social and Developmental Psychology series and two basic electives from the Cognition and Perception series.

Specialization in Brain and Cognitive Sciences (For Psychology Majors Only)

The Psychology major offers a specialization in Brain and Cognitive Science (BCS), which covers the collection of disciplines that are unified by a focus on the function of the brain. BCS investigates some of the deepest mysteries facing science in the 21st century, which concern the processes that underlie neural dynamics and enable higher brain functions, including perception, memory, attention, language, emotion, decision-making, motor control, and consciousness.

Experimental approaches in BCS vary from analyses of molecular and cellular mechanisms in nerve cells and groups of nerve cells to imaging studies of the entire brain to behavioral studies of whole organisms. Theoretical tools include mathematical and computational modeling approaches that have proved useful in other areas of science. Experimental questions include issues related to biophysical and neurochemical mechanisms within single nerve cells, meso- and macro-scale functional neural circuits, and the relationship between activity at these various levels of analysis and behavior. Additionally, courses in the BCS will examine how disruption at these different levels results in psychiatric (e.g., anxiety disorders and depression), neurological (e.g., Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases), and developmental (e.g., dyslexia and autism) disorders.

Psychology Study Abroad Program

The study away pathway for the Psychology major can be found on the NYUAD Student Portal at students.nyuad.nyu.edu/pathways . Students with questions should contact the Office of Global Education.

Effective from 2019-2020 onward, Psychology courses taken abroad may only be counted as basic electives. There will be no equivalencies for advanced electives, which will be required to be taken in Abu Dhabi, unless an exception is granted by the program. The program strongly recommends that students not take more than one Psychology course while studying abroad.

Finally, effective from 2019–2020 onward, the Research Seminar in Psychology for capstone students will take place in the spring semester of the third year.

New York University's Office of Undergraduate Admissions supports the application process for all undergraduate programs at NYU.  For additional information about undergraduate admissions, including application requirements, see How to Apply .

Program Requirements

Requirements for double majors pursuing capstone projects in other programs.

In lieu of the two semester capstone sequence, two extra courses distributed as follows:

Specialization in Brain and Cognitive Sciences (for Psychology Majors Only)

Sample plan of study, learning outcomes.

Students who major in Psychology at NYU Abu Dhabiu will develop:

  • Specialized knowledge of the psychology scientific, theoretical literature.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the critical problems and questions in psychology, including how to identify them, evaluate their importance, and prepare ways to study them.
  • Technical, creative, and analytic skills to collect, analyze, and interpret various types of data. These skills will include a mastery of widely used computer-based data collection programs and statistical software packages.
  • Advanced communication skills, including how to present their work according to the field’s academic standards. These skills will include a mastery of how to write papers in the style of the American Psychological Association (APA).
  • The ability to recognize the ethical complexity of issues in psychology, including the necessity for academic integrity.
  • Skills to self-evaluate and evaluate others through the peer-review process of critical idea exchange.

Job Information

Offer description.

Description

The Melcher Perception and Active Cognition Laboratory in the Division of Science, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit a Post-Doctoral Associate to work on the mechanisms underlying how the brain rapidly processes incoming sensory information in order to guide our behavior.

Current research in the Perception and Active Cognition Laboratory focuses on four major themes:

  • Speed of processing: sensory information arrives continuously and needs to be processed rapidly, according to our goals. Work in our lab has shown that the speed of visual processing varies across people and is linked to specific neural processes that can be measured with EEG/MEG. Speed of processing also varies depending on factors such as emotional state, context, music listening, and time of day.
  • The role of prediction: our brains use information from the past to make, and update, predictions about upcoming sensory input. Work in our Laboratory has shown that both longer-term learning and current information, such as a view of a stimulus in extrafoveal vision, leads to predictions that can change our perceptual interpretation of objects and events. Our Laboratory has shown that predictions are important in quickly processing information across eye movements when looking around or reading.
  • Brain and body rhythms: Sensory and cognitive processing varies over time, linked to brain oscillations, external input (such as music) and body movements. Work in our Laboratory investigates how external input shapes these rhythms, and how these rhythms shape our perceptions and actions.
  • Clinical implications, including individual differences in sensory sensitivity and temporal processing: We are investigating how individual differences in attention, sensory processing and working memory influence performance in tasks in both control and in people diagnosed with dyslexia, autism, schizophrenia and other psychological and neurological conditions.

The successful applicant will drive a fascinating project on one or more of these major themes. This will involve planning and executing experimental research with human participants. The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment consisting of PhD-level scientists, graduate students and undergraduate students.

Applicants must have a PhD in Psychology, Neuroscience or a related field. Excellent experimental and neuroimaging skills relevant to the project are required, as demonstrated by publication in international scientific journals with a good ranking.

For consideration, applicants need to submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae with full publication list, statement of research interests and three letters of reference (or at least the names of three referees who have agreed to provide a letter), all in PDF format. The terms of employment are very competitive and include housing and educational subsidies for children. Applications will be accepted immediately and candidates will be considered until the position is filled. If you have any questions, please email Prof. Melcher at  [email protected] .

NYUAD 11th Hackathon_3.jpg

The annual programming marathon will this year gather over 180 students from 50 countries and global tech experts in Abu Dhabi to solve global challenges

NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), in partnership with Tamkeen, will host the 12th edition of the NYUAD Hackathon for Social Good in the Arab World from April 25-28. The international event, which is unique in the region, will welcome cross-disciplinary teams from around the world to solve challenges faced in the field of quantum computing (QC) and artificial intelligence (AI) related to QC. The aim is to develop ideas that contribute to social good with a view to furthering the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Teams of seven to ten talented students from across the globe, with a majority from the Arab world, will each be guided by two experts in the field from leading institutions. This includes renowned global computer science professors from the likes of the University of Oxford, ETH Zürich, MIT, and Stanford, along with founders of successful startups and technology professionals from Google, Meta, IBM, Qbraid, along with venture capitalists and other leading institutions such as Core42, and the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator (GESDA). This elite and unique gathering of mentors will teach the teams about top practices in QC, AI machine learning applications, and software developments through workshops, keynote speeches, and lighting talks during the marathon. nyu abu dhabi psychology phd

“The NYUAD Hackathon has successfully empowered generations of students from the Arab world and beyond to use the most advanced quantum hardware to confidently undertake challenges in quantum computing and AI-driven machine learning. It is important to note that this event is about more than technical upskilling.  Equally valuable is the caliber of partnerships and participating experts on hand, which creates unprecedented networking opportunities for students. We have seen over the years how this opens the door to collaborations on future international projects, inspires students to launch their own startups, and further academic research in the quantum computing field. It is our hope that this year’s Hackathon will once again cement the potential and capabilities of technology in making a positive impact on the future of our society and to assist young experts in tackling the challenges of our time.” NYUAD Affiliated Professor Sana Odeh
"At Core42, and across our broader organization at G42, our commitment extends beyond leveraging AI's potential within the UAE; we aim to expand its impact globally. As we push the boundaries of AI research and technological innovation across continents, we nurture a new generation of innovators. We are devoted to empowering young talent, convinced that our investment in these emerging minds is crucial for shaping a future where technology brings lasting, significant benefits to societies around the world." Chief AI Officer at Core42 Andrew Jackson

On April 28, the final presentations and award ceremony are free and open to the public. The keynote speeches will include the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Xanadu Christian Weedbrook and Professor at the Raman Research Institute (RRI) Urbasi Sinha.
