NORTH Presentation Secondary School held a very successful open evening recently as they outlined their plans for their new era as a co-educational school from next September which also includes a new mission statement, new subjects, new school uniform and crest.
A large crowd attended the open night in the Farranree secondary school which featured an address from their principal Adrian Gibbs who said the school is looking forward to the future.
“We are not afraid of change. How you taught somebody in 1970 is not how education works in 2022 when we are preparing teenagers to go into the future. We are proud of our past, but we are not stuck in it. The three things we focused on at our open night were challenge, choice, and change. We are now a fully inclusive school because we are co-educational from September 2023. We will be able to take boys and girls into every year group from first year straight through to sixth year,” he said.
The secondary school principal said from September 2023, they will also have three special classes, after receiving the go-ahead from the Department of Education. “We have had three special classes sanctioned for our school which is brilliant news.
The three special classes will mean there is space for 18 new students in September 2023. We wanted to ensure our special classes could take both boys and girls. It is fantastic news for local students and families.
“There is a lot of change and a lot of excitement,” admitted Mr Gibbs ahead of the change to a co-educational school.
“We started this process two years ago when we were looking at our community. We didn’t want to rush this. This isn’t a girl’s school that is suddenly taking in boys. This is something that teachers, staff, parents, and students were all involved in. A lot of the impetus came from the desire from parents to have a son and daughter in the same school.
“Our school has a long tradition in Farranree. A good few of our teachers went to school here. It wasn’t a decision that was taken lightly. We had the support of the NCSE, support and funding from the Department of Education because what we are doing is in line with Government policy.
"We are trying to create a fully inclusive school. This is happening nationwide, and we don’t want to be left behind. It is very exciting,” he added.
The principal said going co-educational will also enable them to provide more subjects for the students. “We now have funding from the Department of Education to extra subjects such as woodwork, technical graphics, and engineering. We now can offer physics, chemistry, and technical subjects because we don’t believe girls and boys should be pigeonholed into just having a limited choice. They should have the opportunity to study a wide range of subjects.
“There are also facilities to go with the investment from the Department. It is something very valuable for this community. Another important thing that is happening is we are rebranding our school. We are updating our mission statement to be more relevant to the times we live in. In September 2023, there will be a new name for the school. It is a new era,” he added.

According to the statement issued by the patron of North Presentation Secondary School on Friday, there was a "robust and facilitated period of consultation", including 31 formal meetings conducted by an independent facilitator with boards of management, staff, students, parents, and guardians. North Presentation Secondary School in Cork city is to press ahead and become co-educational after a planned merger between the school and St Vincent’s was called off this week.
From next September, the school in Farranree will welcome both girls and boys while expanding its curricular and non-curricular provision.
On Thursday, the Religious Sisters of Charity, the patron of St Vincent’s, confirmed a planned merger between the two schools on the north side of Cork city from next year would no longer proceed following “significant opposition” .
In a statement issued on Friday, CEIST, the patron of North Presentation, said it was with “disappointment” that it learned of the decision of the Religious Sisters of Charity to withdraw from the amalgamation process “at this very late stage.”
“Over the last few weeks, a great deal of misleading and false information has been put into the public domain,” it added.
“This has caused immense hurt and upset to the North Presentation School community.” CEIST refrained from commenting to date out of respect for the process, it added.
“The board of management, senior leadership, students, and parents have conducted themselves in a professional, dignified and respectful manner for which we commend them.”

“At this stage, we believe that it is imperative that the record is set straight and that the voices of CEIST and that of Presentation Secondary School are heard.”
There had been strong objections to the planned move locally, with students from St Vincent’s telling the Irish Examiner they had been left "heartbroken" and "completely blindsided”.
Parents had also expressed concerns regarding the move to co-education, the proposed timescale of the amalgamation, and the facilities, particularly for students in the Lir Hub autism centre.
This week, each of the four TDs from Cork North Central called on Norma Foley, the Minister for Education, in the Dáil to pause the amalgamation. Taoiseach Micheál Martin also called for a “full and comprehensive consultation” on the plans. The Department of Education had approved the amalgamation of the schools in October.
According to the statement issued by CEIST on Friday, there was a "robust and facilitated period of consultation", including 31 formal meetings conducted by an independent facilitator with boards of management, staff, students, parents, and guardians.
"In addition, the parents and guardians of students who currently attend the 14Catholic Primary schools in the catchment area were included in the process."
"In the course of the consultation process, both patrons and school partners recognised that students deserve an education service with excellent facilities and high standards of teaching and learning. The schools clearly saw their mission as ensuring the provision of an education to all the students of the area, irrespective of their background or needs.
"The school community looks forward to welcoming both girls and boys and a newly expanded curriculum including construction studies/engineering, technical graphics, design, and communication graphics. We are extremely grateful to the Department of Education for its continued support as we begin this thrilling and progressive journey."

Nano Nagle College has evolved from North Presentation Secondary School. The school was founded by the Presentation Sisters who in turn were founded by Nano Nagle.
Nano Nagle was born in Ballygriffin, Co. Cork in 1718 during the Penal Law Times. She received her early education in the local ‘Hedge School’ and later was sent to France to continue her education.
On her return to Cork in 1747, she was shocked by poverty and the need for education among the poor of Cork. Nano began her first school in Cove Street in 1754.
News of her school spread to the northside. Nano rented a hut on Philpott Curran Lane, off Shandon Street. Out of this came North Presentation Primary School which opened in 1813 on Gerald Griffin Street.
North Pres opened a ‘Secondary Top’ in Gerald Griffin Street which, in time, with the advent of free education became a full secondary school. The secondary school grew in numbers and a new building was required.
North Pres once again evolved and a green field site in Farranree was developed. The new school opened on 21st November 1969, with a procession of students and Presentation Sisters from Gerald Griffin Street to the new school in Farranree.
The official opening was in 1970. The school continued to grow in numbers and, although unsuitable, the old school in Gerald Griffin Street was reopened to cater for this. Both schools operated in tandem with each other.
As the student population grew, an extension was built onto the Farranree school. This opened in 1986.
In 2023, North Presentation Secondary School became known as Nano Nagle College, a co-educational school with new T4 subjects and new ASD classes.
Following in the footsteps of Nano we continue to respond to the changing needs of our community.

Nano Nagle Place We recently had the opportunity to bring the story of Nano Nagle alive for our 1st Yr and 5th students by taking them on a visit to Nano Nagle Place. The experience describes life in 18th century Cork before going on to explore the story of how Nano Nagle worked tirelessly to help and educate the poor and disadvantaged of the city. The students and teachers then interactively discovered how the order she founded, the Presentation Sisters, has travelled across the globe to continue her work. Thanks to Ms. Ryan for organising such an enjoyable trip and to Ms. Browne, Ms. Lawless, Ms. Hennessy and Ms. O' Sullivan for accompanying the students. We are lucky to have this wonderful tribute to such an inspirational person on our doorstep.
TY Graduation Some of Mr. Collins Transition Year class celebrated their graduation yesterday. This year has been an incredible journey filled with new experiences, personal growth, and lasting memories. Transition Year has given our students the opportunity to explore their interests, develop new skills, and build friendships that will last a lifetime. We're proud of all our students and what they have achieved. We are excited for the bright futures ahead!

Thank you Kelly and we wish you and your 6th year classmates the very best in your future endeavours. Good luck Leah and we know you will be a great role-model to all students and represent our school well. Awards Night 2024 Our Annual Award Ceremony, the first as Nano Nagle College, was a night filled with pride and inspiration as we celebrated excellence and achievement and also honoured the remarkable accomplishments of our students. It was also a first for us to present awards to the boys in our school. Whether it was an academic award, attendance award or school spirit award, each one symbolizes dedication, perseverance, and the pursuit of excellence. One of the highlights of the night was a motivational speech by past pupil and CEO of the Irish Examiner, Karen O' Donoghue that resonated with students, staff and parents. Congratulations to all our deserving award recipients you have set a shining example for our entire school community. In this first set of photos we congratulate our Junior & Senior award winners.
