Virginia Tech awards scholarships through the Office of University Scholarships and Financial Aid (USFA) as well as colleges and departments. For maximum financial aid and scholarship consideration, complete your FAFSA and General Scholarship Application by January 22nd each year.

• No need to call our office! If you are awarded a scholarship, we will notify you.
• Watch for emails from the Office of University Scholarships and Financial Aid as well as your college.
• Some scholarships have additional requirements, like acknowledging the terms and conditions or a thank you letter. These requirements must be completed in Scholarship Central or Hokie SPA before the scholarship can be applied to your bill.

AUTOMATIC CONSIDERATION

Students are automatically considered for scholarships like PSI, Beyond Boundaries, and VT Scholars when they apply to Virginia Tech. Eligibility depends on academic merit, financial need as determind by the FAFSA, and other factors from the General Scholarship and Admission Application.

To Be Considered:

- Incoming students must apply for admission to Virginia Tech.

 - All students must submit the FAFSA and complete the General Scholarship Application in Scholarship Central by January 22. 

- Incoming students, do not wait -- complete the General Scholarship Application through your Admissions portal. 

- Students must complete a FAFSA using our school code 003754 to be considered for scholarships from our office. Students who decide not to complete a FAFSA will still be considered for college and departmental scholarships. 

- Students do not need to take any other action to be considered for these scholarships. If you receive one, you will be notified with your offer of admission.

- Some scholarships are renewable for continuing students if the  eligibility requirements  continue to be met.  

APPLY TO OPPORTUNITIES

In  Scholarship Central , students can find additional scholarship applications. Each scholarship opportunity can have need or non-need based requirements such as GPA, major, campus involvement, or home county. 

- Incoming students must apply for admission to Virginia Tech.

- All students should submit the FAFSA and must complete the General Scholarship Application in Scholarship Central by January 22.

- Some colleges have a seperate scholarship application. If yours does, you will be asked to complete it after completing your General Scholarship Application. 

- Incoming students, do not wait -- apply for these additional scholarships through your Admissions portal.

- These scholarships can have different deadlines. Be sure to note each and apply before the application closes.

- If selected for one of these scholarships, a notification will be sent to your Virginia Tech email.

- Some scholarships are one-time awards and should be applied for each year. Certain scholarships are renewable if eligibility requirements continue to be met.

Scholarship next steps:.

After being awarded your scholarship, there may be a few steps you must complete before your scholarship will apply towards your bill. Failure to complete these steps could prevent the scholarship from being disbursed and might even lead to its cancellation. For more detailed information on the subsequent steps, please visit our Scholarship Help Guide Page .

Accept Your Scholarship

Some scholarships will be offered and must be accepted in Scholarship Central and Hokie SPA before they are reflected on your bill. Scholarships that are not accepted within 30 days of being offered will be cancelled.

Agree to the Terms & Conditions for USFA Administered Scholarships

Visit Hokie SPA, review, and accept the scholarship's terms following the steps below:

• Log onto Hokie SPA Financial Aid Self Service
• Select Award Offer and the correct aid year.
• For each of your USFA administered scholarships, select Accept from the drop-down menu to the right. (You may also accept or decline any loans or Federal Work Study you were offered at this time.)
• Click the Submit button at the bottom of the page.
• A pop-up will appear. Read all of the Terms & Conditions for USFA-Administered Scholarships carefully.
• If you acknowledge that you understand the Terms & Conditions, check the box and click the Submit button. Once submitted, you will no longer see the Terms & Conditions requested as an outstanding requirement.

Thank You Letter

Not all scholarships require a thank you letter but if yours does, you will receive an email. Follow the link in the email to electronically complete the thank you letter in Scholarship Central. Personalize your thank you letter by sharing details about yourself — hometown, major, interests, and career goals. Once you have completed your thank you letter, please allow 1-2 weeks for processing. Once your thank you letter is approved, your scholarship will be applied to your student bill.

Consider Sharing More Information with Our Scholarship Donors

Using the FERPA Release found on your General Scholarship Application, you can decide what information you would like to share. You can change your choices or remove permission for us to share at any time. Your answers on the FERPA Release will not impact whether or not you are selected to receive a scholarship.

Virginia Tech's Commitment:

Virginia Tech stands by its commitment to provide affordable educational opportunities for students in accordance with its land-grant mission. Each student is admitted to Virginia Tech with a unique combination of academic achievements and financial need, as demonstrated by the FAFSA. As students are admitted, this unique combination is used to provide students and families with a set grant and scholarship amount that the university will meet for four years. As long as students otherwise meet their scholarship eligibility requirements, Virginia Tech will meet its commitment through a combination of federal and/or state grants as well as institutional scholarships, including college and departmental scholarships. Making this commitment allows students and families to better anticipate costs from year to year, assuring that they are able to remain enrolled and graduate without unexpected shortfalls in aid. Although the type and amount a student receives may vary over the years, the combined total of grants and scholarships will remain unchanged provided students maintain eligibility.

Aid Adjustments

It is important to note that your financial aid package is subject to changes. When you receive additional aid, your financial aid package will be adjusted in accordance with federal, state, and institutional regulations. Some common scenarios that might require aid changes are:

• Receiving additional aid that exceeds your cost of attendance. Note that financial aid cannot exceed a student's cost of attendance.
• Receiving additional grants, scholarships, resources, or other financial assistance. In such instances, federal and state regulations require us to make certain adjustments. For more information on this, please visit the " Your Financial Aid Package " webpage for additional information on Cost of Attendance (COA), Student Aid Index (SAI), and Financial Need.
• Receiving another USFA, college, or departmental scholarship after receiving your initial financial aid offer. In this case, Virginia Tech will count this additional scholarship towards the total grant and scholarship amount. As a result, your initial scholarship may be reallocated. Your combined total of grant and scholarship aid will remain the same. Even if a grant or scholarship cannot be renewed, we will continue to meet the total amount of grants and scholarships committed when you entered Virginia Tech in future years.

Scholarships play a large role in many students’ plans for how to pay for college, but completing the applications for some scholarships is time-consuming—especially for students who are busy taking challenging courses and involved with extracurricular activities. Luckily, some scholarships are easier to apply for than others, like the no-essay scholarships listed below. 

No-essay scholarships are easier to apply for than other, more involved scholarships, so it doesn’t cost you much in time or effort to apply. However, because they’re easy to apply for, they receive a lot of applications, which means more competition and lower odds of winning. It is also less clear how no-essay scholarship recipients are selected without an essay to set your application apart.  

If you choose to apply for no-essay scholarships, just know that they are just a part of a strategy for winning awards to college and are best-suited as a supplement to local and more niche scholarships. If you don’t like the idea of writing an essay, look for a scholarship with an equivalent task, like making a video or creating a piece of art instead. 

Outside scholarships garner a lot of attention, but colleges and universities are actually the best place to look for scholarships—schools themselves grant $175 billion in scholarship money annually! It’s also worth noting that college awards are often larger than outside awards; 80% of external scholarships are less than $2,000, which looks great on paper but will only put a small dent in the cost of most colleges. 

You have the best chance of winning a merit-based scholarship from a college or university. While super-selective schools with applicants fighting for admission often don’t offer merit-based scholarships—for example, none of the Ivy League colleges do—less selective colleges are often anxious to attract strong applicants. • Legal U.S. residents 
• High school juniors and seniors, along with undergraduate and graduate students

These  are offered to students in Hopewell, Prince George, Enon, Chester, Petersburg, Colonial Heights, Dinwiddie, Sussex, Surry, Charles City and Varina. An application and account on the John Randolph Foundation website is required. The scholarship awards range from $1,000 to $10,000. The deadline is January 17th. Read more here .

About Virginia Scholarships

Virginia has a wealth of educational resources, from top-tier universities like the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech to more specialized institutions such as Liberty University and George Mason University. It is ranked at #10 in Education overall by the U.S. News and #20 in Higher Education. It has a population of around 8.6 million and houses more than 540,000 higher education students.

As a student, the state has a lot to explore, including its vibrant culture and history, ranging from sandy beaches along the eastern shore to the rolling Blue Ridge Mountains in the west. Moreover, the state has a moderate cost of living that is similar to the national average – in fact, slightly lower. This further helps students to afford living here more conveniently as compared to other states.

The in-state tuition in Virginia, however, is more expensive than the national average. Due to the higher-than-average tuition costs, the student loan debt here is also in the top 10 with the average borrower debt equalling around $38,900. Colleges in Virginia

Virginia has approximately 163 tertiary schools actively operating in the state, including 44 public and 119 private institutions. Students can also choose from 40 community colleges and around 35 trade school options available. The top three education institutions in Virginia include the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech University, and William & Mary College.

The University of Virginia is ranked at #24 by the U.S. News on the list of the top national universities in the U.S. It is a public university with around 17,496 undergraduate enrolments. It is a hard college to get into as the acceptance rate is only 19%. Moreover, eventhough it is a public institution, it charges a high in-state tuition and fees comparatively, which is around $22,323. Essay requirements may prevent you from applying for a lot of scholarships. But these no-essay options can help you win some easy money for college!

Many scholarships feature long-winded essay questions, and it’s often hard to know where to start. And maybe you just aren’t an essay writer. That doesn’t mean you should lose out on great opportunities for college scholarships. With a little digging around online, you can find great no-essay scholarships that are not only easy to apply for but often fun to do too. These quick and easy contests will have bigger applicant pools and may be harder to win, but somebody has to—and you can’t win if you don’t apply!

Check out the ones below to start and continue to do your own research to find even more no-essay scholarships that could be hiding in all corners of the internet. Before applying to anything, make sure you read all the rules and policies for each scholarship using the links provided!

Register for a website

All of these scholarships just require you to register for a website, and most of them are popular college search sites, so you can get some extra college research done while you’re there.

Barbizon’s $100,000 College Tuition Scholarship

Barbizon Modeling and Acting awards $100,000 to one lucky winner to make their college dreams a reality. Applicants have a full two years to get entries every time the new scholarship cycle opens. The most recent cycle opened in January of 2023 and will be closing in December of 2024, with winners announced sometime the following year. All students have to do to enter is complete the application, and the winner will be chosen by random drawing.

keep going forward No-Essay Scholarships

The organization keepgoingforward.org offers three scholarships throughout the year with no set requirements for grade level or academic field. In fact, one of the scholarships doesn't even require applicants to be current students, as long as they are applying for the money with the intent to move forward with something new in life. And they partner with Bold.org—so if you already have an account, you're one step ahead on applying!

Use your words (but very few)

We said no essays; we never said no words. But have no fear, because these scholarships require very few words and quick answers to easy questions.

CollegeXpress Monthly Mini Scholarships

10 Words or Less Scholarship

You can swing 10 words. All you have to do is tell them why you think you deserve the scholarship in 10 words or fewer. It’s as easy as posting a Facebook comment (which is exactly how you enter). Leave a comment, give them a like on their Facebook page, and you’re in!

Another one that requires a bit of writing, but it’s certainly no essay. You can be entered into Niche’s monthly $1,000 giveaway just by leaving them a review about your high school.

This scholarship is great because instead of writing an essay, you just get to talk about yourself. Record a short five-minute video talking about yourself, your achievements, why college is important to you, and what motivates you. As long as you’re authentic, you could be a shoo-in for this one.

Use your creativity

Are you better with visuals than you are with words? Well, these scholarships are looking for that creative energy!

Doodle for Google

This is Google we’re talking about, so you know they’ve got big bucks. Not only is this an opportunity to win $55,000 for school, but the winning doodle will be featured on Google for a day and they will donate $50,000 to your school or a charity in your honor! And even if you don’t win the big money, you still have a chance at one of the $5,000 runner-up scholarships.

DoSomething doesn’t have just one easy scholarship—they have a ton! Most of them are creative and require you to make some sort of impact on others, whether big or small. Get your task, complete it, and send in a picture for proof for a chance to be their randomly chosen winner! Then rinse and repeat for their other tasks with coordinating scholarships.

Answer some questions

Sometimes websites just want people to fill out their surveys, and they’ll give you money for school just to do it. Or maybe the organization wants you to learn about something that they do. Either way, these scholarships just require answering a few questions to enter.

The $1,000 SuperCollege Scholarship

What’s easier than answering questions about yourself? Fill out an application and tell SuperCollege what you’re going to school for and other academic-related questions, hit submit, and you’re done.

Nitro Monthly Scholarship

Nitro is another college search website that gives away annual scholarships to students monthly. Just complete a short entry form with info including which college you’ll be attending and when you anticipate graduating. This application even allows parents to enter for their children. As long as you're 17 years old, you should apply to this one now!

Student-View Scholarship

This one skips the application process and gets right to the questions. Fill out their survey to get entered into their random drawing. The big winner gets $10,000, and if that’s not you, you could still be one of two $1,000 winners or one of five $500 winners.

Abrams Wins Faculty McFarland Award for Scholarship in Family Law

Professor Kerry Abrams received the Carl McFarland Prize, awarded biennially to a junior faculty member for outstanding research.

University of Virginia law professor Kerry Abrams , an expert in issues where family and immigration law intersect, has won the Law School's Carl McFarland Prize, a biennial award given to a junior faculty member for outstanding research.

"Kerry's work breaks down the boundaries between family law and other disciplines, examining how adjacent areas of the law affect how we think about families and therefore how law treats families," Law School Dean Paul G. Mahoney said when he announced the award on Friday.

Mahoney pointed to Abrams' work analyzing how federal immigration statutes have shaped family law, her study of how state laws regulated internal U.S. migration during the 19th century and its relationship to the marriage market, and her recent work on marriage fraud, in which she reveals how laws regarding sham marriages — designed around contract-like claims — no longer make sense when the public's finances are at stake.

"Kerry navigates carefully the doctrinal anomalies this creates and adds to the growing number of arguments identifying the perils of tying benefits to marital status," Mahoney said.

Abrams said she was honored to receive the award.

"It is a rare privilege to have your cumulative efforts carefully read and appreciated and to receive recognition for an entire body of scholarly work," she said. "The award is particularly gratifying because the UVA faculty is full of brilliant scholars and teachers. So many of my colleagues have taken the time to read and offer comments on my work over the years. This award reflects our vibrant intellectual community — one that nurtures and rewards thoughtful and careful engagement with difficult legal problems."

Abrams said she aims to create a new field of legal inquiry at the intersection of family law and immigration law.

"Immigration law, which we tend to think of as quintessentially 'federal' because it deals with national identity and national borders, nevertheless shapes the most private aspects of people's lives, including what kinds of family relationships they can create and sustain," she said. "In turn, courts' and legislatures' often unspoken ideas about the family affect immigration law and policy."

Abrams also has written about the mid-19th century migration of white women to "civilize" the American West and the late-19th century exclusion of Chinese women immigrants as presumptive prostitutes.

"All of my articles have shared the common theme of showing that regulation of the family is not limited to the law of marriage and divorce," she said. "It's been an exciting area of scholarship. When I wrote my first couple of articles, there were very few people writing across the immigration/family law divide. Abrams is working on a number of projects that will continue to expand the field. In "Citizen Spouse," which will be published next year in the California Law Review, she explores how marriage can function as a form of citizenship, both by giving people access to rights and by taking precedence over other allegiances. In the forthcoming "A Legal Home: Derivative Domicile and Women's Citizenship," she tells the legal history of marriage as citizenship, focusing on the common law rule that a woman's state citizenship followed her husband's and showing how the rule could divest women of civil and political rights. She is also presenting an essay at a Chicago Law Review symposium in June.

"It explores why the United States would want to privilege family ties in immigration admissions," she said.

Abrams is co-authoring pieces with UVA law professor Anne Coughlin, on an article about how the state might recognize polygamy and the consequences of doing so, and with Kent Piacenti '12 (former editor-in-chief of the Virginia Law Review), on an article about how the law determines who is a parent.

"We show that the law of parentage in the immigration and citizenship contexts is very different than it is in the family law context, and argue that the differences can be accounted for through an understanding of the interests at stake in these different areas of law," Abrams said.
