I planned out my computer, I bought each piece separately, I and took my time, but when I first put it together, it didn't work ; I racked my brain, going over each individual wire to make sure it was connected properly. My computer taught me about myself as much as it taught me about itself. In order to put the computer together I had to learn what each individual piece goes and how it fits together with all the rest of the pieces. You don't really explain what the computer taught you about yourself, only that yo uhad to learn about each piece. Mention how learning about the pieces taught you a lesson or perhaps gave you further insight as to what kind of person you are. This may seem boring to some, but I loved it. Or you could continue this and say something like how you realized you enjoyed the meticulous-ness (?) and the detail. Also, I'm not sure how others feel, but it seems like your intro doesn't quite relate to the rest of your topic. It leads up to your future pursuits, but you may want to reconsider rewriting it since you only have 300 words to work with and it almost seems like you're writing about a hero/admirable figure rather than you.

I think it flows a lot nicer and helps it relate to the topic, tell me what you think. As a young kid, I fell in love with computers. Their inner workings fascinate me, so much so, that I built my own fully working desktop computer by the time I was 10. I planned out my computer and bought each piece separately. I carefully weighed each company's product against the other. Even with careful assembly, when I first put it together, it didn't work. That didn't stop me, I racked my brain, going over each individual wire to make sure it was connected properly. My determination and problem solving skills paid off when I found a critical cable was disconnected inside. My computer taught me about myself as much as it taught me about itself. In order to put the computer together I had to learn what each individual piece goes and how it fits together with all the rest of the pieces. This may seem boring to some, but I loved it. The computer taught me determination. I stuck with my project even though it didn't work. When my computer broke, I diagnosed it and fixed it. When it grew old, I upgraded several internal components, instead of simply getting a newer one. Since that moment, I have wanted to learn more about the complex circuitry deep inside a processor's core. Every day, I read about new breakthroughs in processor technology. I think to myself that years down the road, I want to be that guy. I want to be the one that comes up with some great new idea that revolutionizes how they are built or even how they function.

This may seem boring to some, but I loved it. Omit that too. Why do you have to say it? Every day, I read about new breakthroughs in processor technology. I think to myself that years down the road, I want to be that guy. A better whay to say it: >>> "I want to be that guy!" I thought, as I read about who lead a new breakthrough in processor technology I want to be the one that comes up with some a great new idea that revolutionizes how they are built or even how they function. Add a new closing sentence. I believe it shouldn't end with that last sentence.. and if you omit what I suggested you to omit, you would have space for a new closing sentence.

I’m particularly intrigued by the rich sets of both knowledge-based and data-driven intelligence courses, as I believe AI should not only show correlation of events, but also provide insight for why they occur.

In my four years as an enthusiastic online English tutor, I’ve worked hard to help students overcome both financial and technological obstacles in hopes of bringing quality education to people from diverse backgrounds. For this reason, I’m extremely excited by the many courses in the People thread that focus on education and human-centered technology. This essay perfectly accomplishes the two key parts of a “ Why Computer Science? ” essay: answering “ Why This Major? ” and “ Why This College? ”. Not to mention, we get a lot of insight into this student and what they care about beyond computer science, and a fun hook at the beginning.

Starting with the “ Why This Major? ” aspect of the response, this essay demonstrates what got the student into computer science, why they are passionate about the subject, and what their goals are. They show us their introduction to the world of CS with an engaging hook: “I held my breath and hit RUN. Yes! A plump white cat jumped out and began to catch the falling pizzas. ” We then see this is a core passion because they spent “ Four years and thousands of hours ,” coding.

The student shows us why they care about AI with the sentence, “ Every day, surrounded by technology that can recognize my face and recommend scarily-specific ads ,” which makes the topic personal by demonstrating their fear at AI’s capabilities. But, rather than let panic overwhelm them, the student calls upon Spiderman and tells us their goal of establishing digital equality through education. This provides a great basis for the rest of the essay, as it thoroughly explains the students motivations and goals, and demonstrates their appreciation for interdisciplinary topics.

Then, the essay shifts into answering “ Why This College? ”, which it does very well by honing in on a unique facet of Georgia Tech’s College of Computing: threads. This is a great example of how to provide depth to the school resources you mention. The student describes the two threads and not only why the combination is important to them, but how their previous experiences (i.e. online English tutor) correlate to the values of the thread: “ For this reason, I’m extremely excited by the many courses in the People thread that focus on education and human-centered technology. ”

What Could Be Improved

This essay does a good job covering the basics of the prompt, but it could be elevated with more nuance and detail. The biggest thing missing from this essay is a strong core to tie everything together. What do we mean by that? We want to see a common theme, anecdote, or motivation that is weaved throughout the entire essay to connect everything. Take the Spiderman quote for example. If this was expanded, it could have been the perfect core for this essay.

Underlying this student’s interest in AI is a passion for social justice, so they could have used the quote about power and responsibility to talk about existing injustices with AI and how once they have the power to create AI they will act responsibly and help affected communities. They are clearly passionate about equality of education, but there is a disconnect between education and AI that comes from a lack of detail. To strengthen the core of the essay, this student needs to include real-world examples of how AI is fostering inequities in education. This takes their essay from theoretical to practical.

Sometimes I try to imagine what we, the technologists of the second half of the 20th century, will be remembered for, if anything, hundreds of years from now.

In the distant past there were people who lived on the banks of the Nile River. Each year the Nile overflowed its banks, wiping out land boundaries but providing fertile soil for growing crops. As a matter of economic necessity the Egyptians invented ways of surveying the land. They also invented ways of measuring time, to help predict the yearly deluge. Similar discoveries were made in many places in the world. Holders of this practical knowledge were held in high esteem, and the knowledge was transferred to future generations through secret cults. These early surveyors laid the foundation for the development of geometry (“earth measurement” in Greek) by Pythagoras and Euclid and their colleagues around 350 BC. Geometry is a precise language for talking about space. It can be taught to children. (Euclid’s Elements has been used in this way for more than 2000 years.) It makes the children smarter, by giving them ways of expressing knowledge about arrangements in space and time. It is because of these Greeks that we can tell a child, “If you build it out of triangles it will not collapse the way it does when you build it out of rectangles.”

The Rhind Papyrus from Egypt (c. 1650 BC) is the earliest document that we have that discusses what we now think of as algebra problems. Diophantus, another Greek, wrote a book about these ideas in the third century A.D. Algebra was further developed by Abu Abd-Allah ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi (c. 780–c. 850) and others. (Note: “algebra” = al’jabr is an Arabic word meaning “the recombining of broken parts.”) Algebra is also a precise language that gives us the ability to express knowledge about the relationships among quantities, and to make deductions from that knowledge, without necessarily knowing the values of those quantities.

For a long time people were able to predict the motions of some of the heavenly bodies using ad hoc theories derived from observation and philosophical considerations. Claudius Ptolemy wrote the Almagest , a famous compendium of this knowledge, in the second century. About 350 years ago Descartes, Galileo, Newton, Leibnitz, Euler, and their contemporaries turned mechanics into a formal science. In the process they

invented continuous variables, coordinate geometry, and calculus. We now can talk about motion precisely. This achievement gives us the words to say such sentences as, “When the car struck the tree it was going 50 km/hour.” Now every child can understand this sentence and know what is meant by it.

In each of these cases there was an advance in human intelligence, ultimately available to ordinary children, that was precipitated by an advance in mathematics, the precise means of expression. Such advances are preceded by a long history of informal development of practical technique. We are now in the midst of an intellectual revolution that promises to have as much impact on human culture as the cases I have just described.

We have been programming universal computers for about 50 years. The practice of computation arose from military, scientific, business, and accounting applications. Just as the early Egyptian surveyors probably thought of themselves as experts in the development and application of surveying instruments, so have we developed a priestly cult of “computer scientists.” But, as I have pointed out (H. Abelson, G.J. Sussman, and J. Sussman, Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs , 2nd Edition, MIT Press, Cambridge, Mass., 1996):

Computer Science is not a science, and its ultimate significance has little to do with computers. The computer revolution is a revolution in the way we think and in the way we express what we think. The essence of this change is the emergence of what might best be called procedural epistemology— the study of the structure of knowledge from an imperative point of view, as opposed to the more declarative point of view taken by classical mathematical subjects. Traditional mathematics provides a framework for dealing precisely with notions of “what is.” Computation provides a framework for dealing precisely with notions of “how to.”

Computation provides us with new tools to express ourselves. This has already had an impact on the way we teach other engineering subjects. For example, one often hears a student or teacher complain that the student knows the “theory” of the material but cannot effectively solve problems. We should not be surprised: the student has no formal way to learn technique. We expect the student to learn to solve problems by an inefficient process: the student watches the teacher solve a few problems, hoping to abstract the general procedures from the teacher’s behavior with particular examples. The student is never given any instructions on how to abstract from examples, nor is the student given any language for expressing what has been learned. It is hard to learn what one cannot express.

In particular, in an introductory subject on electrical circuits we show students the mathematical descriptions of the behaviors of idealized circuit elements such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, diodes, and transistors. We also show them the formulation of Kirchoff’s laws, which describe the behaviors of interconnections. From these facts it is possible, in principle, to deduce the behavior of an interconnected combination of components. However, it is not easy to teach the techniques of circuit analysis. The problem is that for most interesting circuits there are many equations and the equations are quite complicated. So it takes organizational skills and judgment to effectively formulate the useful equations and to deduce the interesting behaviors from those equations.

Traditionally, we try to communicate these skills by carefully solving selected problems on a blackboard, explaining our reasoning and organization. We hope that the students can learn by emulation, from our examples. However, the process of induction of a general plan from specific examples does not work very well, so it takes many examples and much hard work on the part of the faculty and students to transfer the skills.

However, if I can assume that my students are literate in a computer programming language, then I can use programs to communicate ideas about how to solve problems: I can write programs that describe the general technique of solving a class of problems and give that program to the students to read. Such a program is precise and unambiguous—it can be executed by a dumb computer! In a nicely designed computer language a well-written program can be read by students, who will then have a precise description of the general method to guide their understanding. With a readable program and a few well-chosen examples it is much easier to learn the skills. Such intellectual skills are very hard to transfer without the medium of computer programming. Indeed, “a computer language is not just a way of getting a computer to perform operations but rather it is a novel formal medium for expressing ideas about methodology. Thus programs must be written for people to read, and only incidentally for machines to execute” (Abelson et al., Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs , 1996).

I have used computational descriptions to communicate methodological ideas in teaching subjects in electrical circuits and in signals and systems. Jack Wisdom and I have written a book and are teaching a class that uses computational techniques to communicate a deeper understanding of classical mechanics. Our class is targeted for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in physics and engineering. In our class computational algorithms are used to express the methods used in the analysis of dynamical phenomena. Expressing the methods in a computer language forces them to be unambiguous and computationally effective. Students

are expected to read our programs and to extend them and to write new ones. The task of formulating a method as a computer-executable program and debugging that program is a powerful exercise in the learning process. Also, once formalized procedurally, a mathematical idea becomes a tool that can be used directly to compute results.

We may think that teaching engineering and science is quite removed from daily culture, but this is wrong. Back in 1980 (a long time ago!) I was walking around an exhibit of primitive personal computers at a trade show. I passed a station where a small girl (perhaps 9 years old) was typing furiously at a computer. While I watched, she reached over to a man standing nearby and pulled on his sleeve and said: “Daddy! Daddy! This computer is very smart. Its BASIC knows about recursive definitions!” I am sure that her father had no idea what she was talking about. But notice: the idea of a recursive definition was only a mathematician’s dream in the 1930s. It was advanced computer science in the 1950s and 1960s. By 1980 a little girl had a deep enough operational understanding of the idea to construct an effective test and to appreciate its significance.

At this moment in history we are only at the beginning of an intellectual revolution based on the assimilation of computational ideas. The previous revolutions took a long time for the consequences to actualize. It is hard to predict where this one will lead. I see one of the deepest consequences of computational thinking entering our society in the transformation of our view of ourselves. Previous revolutions have entered culture by affecting the way we think and the way we talk: we discuss economic phenomena in terms of “market forces.” We talk about geopolitical developments as having “momentum.” We think it is hard to accomplish an organizational change because of “inertia.” In exactly the same way we will find computational metaphors sneaking into our vocabulary. We already hear ourselves describing some social interactions as “networking.” We may “ping” a friend to see if he “acks,” indicating that he is available. But these are still rather superficial. More telling is the fact that we can describe people and organizations as having “bugs,” and that these can be “patched.” Perhaps the most important consequence of computational thinking will be in the development of an understanding of ourselves as computational beings. Indeed, my personal experience as a computer programmer has made me aware that many of my own problems are bugs that can be analyzed and debugged, often with great effort, and sometimes patched.

Long and Short Computer Essay

The term computer was once used to refer to a person who did computation, unlike today. The development of early prototypes that led to the modern computer is credited to many individuals throughout history. A series of breakthroughs, beginning with transistor computers and then integrated circuit computers, resulted in the development of transistor technology and the integrated circuit chip, causing digital computers to largely replace analogue computers. 

In this essay, we will discuss the various components and types of computers and talk about their uses in various fields.

Long Computer Essay in English

A computer is an electronic tool that manipulates data or information. It can store, retrieve, and process information. We can type documents, send emails, play games, and browse the Web using a computer. It can also be used to edit spreadsheets, presentations, and even videos, or create them. 

Early computers were conceived only as devices for calculating. Simple manual devices such as the abacus have helped individuals do calculations since ancient times. Some mechanical devices were built early in the Industrial Revolution to automate long, tedious tasks, such as guiding patterns for looms. In the early 20th century, more sophisticated electrical machines performed specialized analogue calculations. 

Common Components of Computers

All those parts of a computer that are tangible physical objects are covered under the term hardware. The hardware includes circuits, computer chips, graphics cards, sound cards, memory (RAM), motherboards, displays, power supplies, cables, keyboards, printers and "mice" input devices.

 There are five main hardware components: 

Input Devices: 

These are devices that are used to enter data/information in the central processing unit. Example- keyboard, mouse, scanner, document reader, barcode reader, optical character reader, magnetic reader etc.

Output Devices: 

These are devices that provide the processed data/information into human-readable form. Example- monitor, printer, speaker, projector etc.

Control Unit: 

The control unit handles the various components of the computer; it reads and interprets (decodes) the instructions for the program, transforming them into control signals that activate other computer parts.

Arithmetic Logic Unit: 

It is capable of performing arithmetical and logical functions. The set of arithmetic operations supported by a specific ALU may be restricted to addition and subtraction or may include functions of multiplication, division, trigonometries such as sine, cosine, etc., and square roots.

Central Processing Unit: 

The ALU, control unit and registers and together called the CPU. It is sometimes called the computer's brain, and its job is to perform commands. We send instructions to the CPU whenever we press a key, click the mouse, or start an application.

Software refers to computer parts, such as programs, data, protocols, etc., that do not have a material form. In contrast to the physical hardware from which the system is built, the software is that portion of a computer system consisting of encoded information or computer instructions.

It is sometimes called "firmware" when the software is stored in hardware that can not be easily modified, such as with a BIOS ROM on an IBM PC compatible computer.

Computer hardware and software require each other, and neither of them can be realistically used on their own. There are four main components of a general-purpose computer: the arithmetic logic unit (ALU), the control unit, the memory, and the I/O (collectively called input and output) devices.

Uses of Computer

Computers are used in various fields, such as homes, businesses, government offices, research organizations, educational institutions, medicine, entertainment, etc. because of their features and powerful functions. They have taken sectors and companies to a whole new level.

Science- 

Computers are best suited for the collection, analysis, categorization, and storage of data in science, research and engineering. They also help scientists to exchange data both internally and internationally with each other.

Government-  

Computers in the government sector are used to perform various functions and improve their services. In most cases, data processing tasks, the maintenance of citizens' databases, and the promotion of a paperless environment are the primary purposes of using computers. In addition to this, computers play a key role in the country's defence system.

Health and Medicine- 

They are used to preserve information, records, live patient monitoring, X-rays, and more from patients. Computers assist in setting up laboratory tools, monitoring heart rate and blood pressure, etc. Besides, computers allow physicians to easily exchange patient data with other medical specialists.

Education- 

They help people get different educational materials (such as images, videos, e-books, etc.) in one place. Also, computers are best suited for online classes, online tutoring, online exams, and task and project creation. Also, they can be used to maintain and track student performance and other data.

Banking- 

Most countries use online banking systems so that customers can access their data directly. People can verify the balance of their account, transfer cash, and pay online bills, including credit cards. Besides, banks use computers to execute transactions and store client information, transaction records, etc.

Short Computer Essay in English

A computer's a programmable device that accepts raw data(input) and processes it as output with a group of instructions (a program) to supply the result. It renders output after performing mathematical and logical operations and can save the output for future use. The word "computer" derives from the word "computare" in Latin, which means calculating.

Types of Computer

Computers are of different types based on different criteria. Based on their size, computers are of five types:

Micro Computers- 

It is a single-user computer that has less capacity for speed and storage than the other types. For a CPU, it uses a microprocessor. Laptops, desktop computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), tablets, and smartphones are common examples of microcomputers. Microcomputers are generally designed and built for general use, such as browsing, information search, the internet, MS Office, social media, etc.

Mini Computers- 

Minicomputers are also referred to as "Midrange Computers." They are multi-user computers designed to simultaneously support multiple users. Therefore, they are generally used by small companies and firms. 

Mainframe Computers- 

It is also a multi-user computer that large companies and government organizations use to run their business operations as large amounts of data can be stored and processed. Banks, universities, and insurance companies, for example, use mainframe computers to store data from their customers, students, and policyholders.

Super Computer- 

Among all types of computers, supercomputers are the fastest and most costly computers. They have an enormous capacity for storage and computing speeds and can therefore perform millions of instructions per second.

Workstations-  

It is a single-user computer with a comparatively more powerful microprocessor and a high-quality monitor compared to a mini-computer.

Benefits of Computers:

It increases productivity.

It helps in connecting to the internet.

It helps in organizing data and information.

It allows storing large amounts of data.

I’m 5 years old, wearing a striped, blue-and-green Danskin outfit. As I walk toward my kindergarten teacher’s desk, I feel excited. Mrs. Stuchio pulls out the little plastic chair and tells me to sit. I place my workbook on the table and begin. “A pig can jig,” I recite. “Excellent,” she says. “Go on.”

As I read the words and look at the pigs, I feel strong, smart . . . happy.

I don’t remember much else about that 1974 day at the Hills School in Dix Hills, but when I realized that sounding out letters on a page allowed me to read an entire story, I was hooked.

As a child, I had a busy life: birthday parties at an East Northport crafts store and the Commack Roller Rink; soccer games; guitar and piano lessons; riding bikes with friends; and story times at the Half Hollow Hills Community Library. I can still hear the librarian reading “Make Way for Ducklings.” My favorite place, though, was in my pink-and-orange bedroom snuggled up with a book.

When I was old enough to read chapter books, I couldn’t get enough of them. “Harriet the Spy,” “All-of-A-Kind Family,” anything by Judy Blume. Then I graduated to Danielle Steel and Sidney Sheldon. Back then, the “young adult” genre didn’t exist; I went straight from family breakfast scenes to love stories, like “Evergreen” by Belva Plain. The times I was lucky enough to visit Book Revue in Huntington, I was thrilled by the possibilities as I ran my fingers across the book spines. Years later, I took my own children there.

At Candlewood Junior High School, English became my favorite class. I have vivid memories of Mrs. Ayers, with her thick bob, reading “The Cask of the Amontillado” aloud as my eighth-grade classmates and I sat mesmerized by her deep, emotive voice. At Half Hollow Hills High School East, my 10th-grade English teacher, Mr. Alford, was a strict man who wore suits and sweater vests. We had a rigid schedule of spelling tests and book reviews that we recorded in black-and-white composition notebooks. I loved the structure.

In subsequent English classes, my teachers assigned strenuous books (“The Stranger,” “A Tale of Two Cities”) and complex research papers. For the first time, I felt book-related.

After getting my college degree in English and working at seventeen magazine, books called again: I left to get my teaching certification.

As a new English teacher in Manhattan, I stressed the importance of immersive reading. Annotations, I feel, break the momentum; I encouraged students to read without distractions. Years later, after raising my three children, I taught English, filling in for teachers on leave at Half Hollow Hills High School West. “Sustained silent reading,” during which students spent entire periods reading, was integral to my curriculum.

Today, as a librarian at Manhasset High School, I promote reading with enthusiasm. For a recent ninth-grade class, I created a “reading workout.” Students sampled books spread across tables and read with no agenda. I’d never seen them more engaged.

Looking back on my literary path, I recall the joy from that kindergarten day. I dream of a school curriculum centered around books. For now, I’ll keep getting lost in reading and use my platform as a librarian to share my passion.

I Love the Kids in My Life. And I’m Raising None of Them.

Recently, a book tour gave me the opportunity to travel around America. Budgets being what they are, I primarily chose cities where I had friends who would happily provide me with places to stay. These were homes, almost without exception, filled with children. I have no children of my own, and this felt like a serendipitous chance to catch up with many of the kids in my life.

In America, there is a persistent, pernicious belief that the only way to be invested in a child’s life is to be a parent — and, for women, to give birth to that child. (Ella and Cole Emhoff, among others, would like a word.) In a country that offers so little support to parents, this often feels like a not-so-covert argument for taking women back to a time when they lacked control over their bodies and their finances.

Recently, the Pew Research Center reported that 64 percent of women under 50 who don’t have children say they “just don’t want to.” This has contributed to another round of hand-wringing about birthrates and childless cat ladies . What the seemingly inexhaustible discussion around this topic leaves out is that many people who say they don’t want to birth or parent children do have children in their lives — other people’s. We rarely account for that, nor do we give full weight to the fulfillment these relationships provide.

Which is not entirely surprising. So often we hear about the annoyance of other people’s children — babies crying on planes, kids fussing at restaurants. Rarely do we talk about the pleasure of these little people, or how transformative it is to have children in your life whom you’re not raising.

I’ve been reminded of the joys of these relationships this summer. Most of the kids in my life, I have known since birth. In more than a few cases, I was present at the discovery that there was a child to be expected. Or I was the person on call to wait with a child while her sibling made an entrance. Many are children I have cared for in various stages of their life: I’ve changed countless diapers and dispensed endless bottles; I’ve given baths; I’ve been the emergency pickup contact at school. Several of these kids have vomited on me. I’m in a number of wills as the person these children will come to if, God forbid, something happens to their parents. For some, all of the above apply.

Since June, I’ve spent time variously spooning avocado into a toddler’s mouth and answering questions about what it’s like to get your period. I’ve been taught new card games. I balanced myself in the surf as a 6-year-old clung to me screaming with joy, trusting me not to let go. I attended a children’s performance of “The Little Mermaid” starring one 9-year-old who, as a 9-week-old, I held in my arms while I did an interview for my first book. Summer concluded with my driving a bunch of teens and preteens to one of their many sporting events while I cajoled them to look up from their phones once in a while and talk to me.
