Homework Help

Get help with school work.

During the school year, we offer programs and services to help students of all ages succeed in school. We offer in-person Homework Help and Virtual Tutoring, which includes academic coaching, one-on-one tutoring, math and reading skill-building games and activities, college prep resources and more.

In-person Homework Help

In person HH

If you are working on a tough homework assignment or have questions about a lesson, come to the Library for Homework Help. We have volunteers who can help K-12 students with math, science, English, social studies and science. Students without homework can read and play learning enrichment games with trained tutors.

You can get Homework Help most days during the school year, except on weekends and school holidays. No reservations are needed just come to the Library during Homework Help hours and bring your homework assignment and textbook. If our volunteers do not know an answer, they will help you find it.

Do not worry if you do not have all the supplies you need. We have many things available that you can use, like graphing calculators, markers, paper, pencils, and a laptop. When you come to the Library for Homework Help, let us know what you need – there is a good chance we will have it.

If you need a quick answer, a book recommendation or help finding information, Ask Us .

9 free public library resources for your child (and you)

Libraries offer books, e-books, music, movies, and video games that build skills. Along with Wi-Fi and free access to computers, your public library may offer even more free resources, tools, and services.

homework help public library

By Julie Rawe

Expert reviewed by Trynia Kaufman, MS

Did you know the United States has more than 17,000 public library buildings and bookmobiles in this country. Libraries are still great for checking out books. But they offer many other free learning resources, too.

Explore these free services and tools you can find at public libraries. To find out what’s offered at your local library, explore its website or talk to your local librarian.

1. Homework help

Public libraries are a great homework resource. Chances are a library near you offers free access to tutoring sites.

You may not need to leave home to use these resources. Many libraries have websites that make homework help available around the clock. Some libraries also offer free one-on-one tutoring in person.

2. Computers and high-speed internet

Nearly all public libraries provide Wi-Fi and free access to computers. And many libraries offer classes on how to use different kinds of computer programs.

Need help looking for a job? Applying for financial aid for college ? Learning how to make a website or use social media? Many libraries have workshops on these and other topics related to computers.

3. Movies, music, board games, video games, and e-books

Yes, you can still check out old-fashioned books at public libraries. And at many libraries, you can check out movies and music too. Lots of libraries also have games that help build math and reading skills. Some libraries even have video games you can borrow.

Encouraging struggling readers to browse these sections could help them get more excited about coming to the library. They can also get help finding books at the right reading level on topics they’re interested in.

Is there something specific you wish your local library had? You can ask the library to add it to their collection or borrow it for you from another library — no matter how far away. Public libraries are also great places to borrow e-books.

4. 3D printers, graphing calculators, and other tools

Like hands-on learning? Many public libraries have “makerspaces” where kids and teens can get creative with tools like 3D printers. Want to make a video or audio recording? Grammy-winner Chance the Rapper recorded his first mixtape at a public library in Chicago.

Some libraries also have other kinds of tools that kids and adults can borrow. These could be high-tech gadgets, like a graphing calculator. There may also be supplies you can use while at the library, like pencils and markers.

5. Story time for young kids

There are many reasons to love story time at public libraries. Having a librarian read stories out loud exposes toddlers and preschoolers to more words and ideas. It can help young kids get excited about books . Story time can also help parents and caregivers catch their breath while their kids are learning.

6. Teen rooms

Some public libraries are carving out teen-only rooms or teen-only times. The goal is to create a safe place for teens to hang out, do homework, and use art and tech tools to express themselves.

Some libraries even have librarians who specialize in young adults. These librarians can help find books that encourage teens to read more .

7. Afterschool and summer programs

More than a third of public libraries regularly offer afterschool programs. And nearly all libraries have summer reading programs for kids. These can help prevent “ summer brain drain ” — when many students fall behind in reading and math.

In the summer, many libraries also provide free meals to kids who get free lunch at school.

8. Fitness classes

A surprising number of public libraries offer fitness classes like yoga, dance, Zumba, and Qigong (tai chi). You can check out fitness equipment from some libraries, too. More and more libraries are adding mindfulness classes as well.

Exercise and meditation can help kids learn. They can also reduce stress and anxiety. Even taking short breaks to stretch or move around can help kids stay focused and get their work done.

9. Help for struggling readers

One way libraries help struggling readers is by providing audiobooks along with the print versions. Using both at the same time can help struggling readers connect the way words sound to the way they look on the page.

Some libraries help kids and adults work on reading skills like phonics . And libraries are always looking for ways to encourage reading. Some libraries bring in therapy dogs so kids can read out loud to them. (Why dogs? Because dogs don’t mind when readers make mistakes!)

Libraries can also be a great resource for English language learners. Many libraries have books in other languages and have classes to help people learn English.

Have kids with reading challenges? Learn where you can get audiobooks and digital text-to-speech books for your child. Also explore this list of books that feature characters with dyslexia or ADHD .

This page is designed to help you complete your homework assignments. The Children’s Room has many tools, from books and magazines to databases and the Internet, to help you:

  • improve your math skills (times tables, anyone?)
  • find great books for sustained silent reading at home and at school
  • learn the difference between parts of speech
  • help you write reports
  • increase your knowledge of a wide range of topics

There are resources in the library databases that can help you accomplish these goals, too. You will find them here . You can use these at home or at the library. Even if the library is closed (a Sunday, for example), you can still use library resources!

Research and Reports

Your teacher has assigned a project. You have a page of information you need to find as well as questions to answer. You need to write a report on what you have learned.

Where do you start?!!!

Don’t panic! There are lots of resources—books, magazines, databases, and the Internet—at the library.  Check to see which of these resources your teacher wants you to use so you’ll know what resources are acceptable.

Now to the meat of the matter: what do you need to know? Where will you find it?

Let’s say you are doing a penguin project.  Your special penguin is the rockhopper penguin. Does the library have any books on rockhopper penguins? Here’s how to find out.

First, search the library’s online catalog . Type in “rockhopper penguin” in the search box. No books are found.  Don’t worry, though; even if there isn’t a book on rockhopper penguins, there are probably books about penguins, and in some of those books there may be information about your penguin.

You will need to click on each title that sounds interesting, then read the description to see if it has the information you want.

Minuteman_Library_Network__Woburn

Here’s a book that sounds good.  It shows you a call number, which tells you where in the Children’s Room the book is shelved, and it also says the book is available.  There is no mention of rockhopper penguins in the title.  You will need to look further down the page to see if there is anything in the description.

Minuteman_Library_Network__Woburn

Oh, it says there is information about 13 penguin species (types)! Maybe the rockhopper is one of them. Since the description doesn’t say which species are included, you will have to visit the library and look in the index in the back of the book to see if “rockhopper” is listed. An index tells you what is inside the book in detail.  It can help you decide whether the book is the right one for your project.

Here is another book that might be good.  Is there a mention of rockhopper penguins in the description? Yes! You know that you will find information about your penguin in that book.

Minuteman_Library_Network__All_Locations

Now that you have these books, you may want to add to this information by using the children’s databases, including Kids Infobits and PebbleGo Animals . There are also websites you can visit for more information:

  • American Library Association’s Great Sites for Kids
  • Homework Spot
  • Khan Academy
  • Multnomah County Homework Help

You’ll notice that Wikipedia is NOT on the list.  Since anyone can post to Wikipedia, you might find material that isn’t correct.  For example, if you know rockhoppers are penguins that live in a cold place, but someone changed something in Wikipedia to say that some penguins like the rockhopper can live in a tropical rainforest, you might want to include that in your report because you think it might be true. (Hint: it isn’t!) Use web sources you *know* you can trust.  Wikipedia can’t be trusted. Those listed above CAN be trusted.

Now you need to put your report together.  Write down the facts you have found in your research.  An easy way to do this is to use index cards.  Write ONE fact on each card.  Then you can shuffle them and put them in the order you want to write about.  This makes writing your report much easier, and also means that you can organize your facts in the order the teacher wants you to write about them.

Write a draft of your report. You can scratch out, change how you write sentences, change the order of your facts, and fine-tune everything. Once you have it organized the way you want, you can write or type your final copy.  Add photocopies or printouts of maps and pictures.

Hooray! You’re done!

A comprehensive resource to help public libraries create and manage homework centers

Creating & Managing the Full-Service Homework Center

CHICAGO — Despite the proliferation of online homework websites and tutoring services, public libraries still have an important role to play when it comes to supporting young people’s educational needs. Public libraries that take a proactive approach—by setting up organized homework centers—have the potential to become catalysts for better performance in school, improved self-esteem, and engaged learning. Whether readers are investigating the possibility of setting up a center from scratch or are eager to revamp an existing center, Cindy Mediavilla’s “ Creating & Managing the Full-Service Homework Center ,” published by ALA Editions, shows the way forward with:

  • discussion of the philosophy behind a public library homework center and its many benefits, with useful talking points for getting stakeholders on board;
  • examples of model programs from across the country;
  • guidance on assessing the community’s educational priorities and utilizing outcome-based planning and evaluation methods;
  • pragmatic advice on how to collaborate with schools and educators to coordinate goals;
  • thorough consideration of such key issues as carving out a space, setting hours, scheduling staff, and selecting and procuring educational resources;
  • handy tools for a successful homework center, including sample surveys, homework helper application forms and contracts, staff and volunteer job descriptions, and focus group questions;
  • advice on equipment and technology considerations; and
  • methodologies for evaluation and improvement.

Mediavilla authored “Creating the Full–Service Homework Center in Your Library,” (ALA, 2001), which has been called “the quintessential guide to the practicalities of setting up a formal homework help center to provide one–to–one homework assistance to student patrons” (Intner, “Homework Help from the Library,” ix). In the early 1990s she managed a homework center, called the Friendly Stop, for the Orange (CA) Public Library, and she has been studying after–school homework programs ever since. She has published several articles on the topic and has evaluated homework programs for the Long Beach and Los Angeles public libraries. She has made presentations on homework help programs at the conferences of several major library associations, and she has also conducted many workshops on the topic.

ALA Store purchases fund advocacy, awareness and accreditation programs for library professionals worldwide. ALA Editions and ALA Neal-Schuman publishes resources used worldwide by tens of thousands of library and information professionals to improve programs, build on best practices, develop leadership, and for personal professional development. ALA authors and developers are leaders in their fields, and their content is published in a growing range of print and electronic formats.
