Gadar 2 Reviews

gadar movie review today

Anil Sharma has blended all the ingredients in perfect proportion to give us a massy-actioner for the big screen.

Full Review | Original Score: 3.5/5 | Aug 31, 2023

The film floats on its huge nostalgia value and the aura of its star, Sunny Deol, who has once again proved the adage that a lion never gets old.

What we can confirm is that Sunny paaji can still snarl effectively, and that dhai-kilo-ka-haath has residual potency. We can also confirm the reappearance of a hand-pump.

There’s no point getting into the details of how repetitive and insensitive the third hour of the film is.

Sunny Deol's chest-thumping actioner is stale and could have been avoided...

Gadar 2 is strictly for three categories of people: Sunny Deol fans, those that miss the unbridled excesses of Bollywood of yore, and those that believe that "hate thy neighbour" is an axiom worth cheering for.

gadar movie review today

Gadar 2 is a disappointing mess that offers nothing clever to this saga. This sequel to the 2001 film Gadar: Ek Prem Katha is proof that waiting several years to make a sequel doesn't mean that the filmmakers can think of any good ideas for that sequel.

gadar movie review today

Gadar 2 tries to cash in on the nostalgia factor, filmy dialoguebaazi and slowmo action scenes, without a story or purpose that can hold it all together.

Full Review | Original Score: 2.5/5 | Aug 14, 2023

A director who has not made anything worthwhile in years, a star who has seen better days, a nepo kid in search of a big break, and one box-office diamond in their vault. Gadar 2 was inevitable...

Gadar 2 is one of the worst films of all time.

gadar movie review today

By the time the film concludes, it becomes amply clear that Sharma’s objective of making Gadar 2 is to encash on the current volatile climate of the country. It is to claim his share in a pie he was one of the firsts to make.

Gadar 2 movie review: Sunny Deol makes a roaring comeback as Tara Singh to deliver a big screen massy actioner

Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 is an action-spectacle, which needs to be watch on the big canvas

Gadar 2 movie review: Sunny Deol makes a roaring comeback as Tara Singh to deliver a big screen massy actioner

Cast: Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel, Utkarsh Sharma, Manish Wadhwa, Gaurav Chopra, Simratt Kaur

Director: Anil Sharma

Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel starrer Gadar , which released in 2001, was an all-time blockbuster, which was filled with massy dialogues, machoism and OTT but impressive action sequences. So, when the makers announced that they are coming up with a sequel after 22 long years, it garnered mixed responses as the audience didn’t want the producers to spoil the nostalgia and cult following of the prequel. The film has finally hit the screens and is expected to take a humongous opening. But, does this sequel manages to fulfil the expectations of the cinegoers? Let’s find out…

Talking about Gadar 2 , it starts off from where the first part concluded. The story, which is made 22 years later shows a grown-up Jeetey (Utkarsh Sharma), who wants to become an actor but his father Tara Singh (Sunny Deol) wants him to become an army officer. Jeetey and Sakina’s (Ameesha Patel) mother-son bond makes you remind of your camaraderie with your mom.

The plot is set in 1971 during the war situation, where we see an army officer Devendra Rawat (Gaurav Chopraa) request desh-bhakt truck-driver Tara Singh to arrange 50 trucks from his union as the Indian army is creating a backup. While the Pakistani army illegally and unethically tries to capture India’s Ram Tekdi, Tara Singh and team reach the location with ammunition on Rawat’s order to help the Indian army.

While the Indian army successfully manages to beat the opposition, Pakistani General Hamid Iqbal (Manish Wadhwa) captures some of the Indian soldiers along with some truck drivers. Jeetey thinks that even his father has been captured unethically by the troops, so he goes to Pakistan to get his Paapey. But what follows the plot is an unexpected twist with some heavy dialogues, massy action sequences and a lot of drama.

Director Anil Sharma hit the right chords by playing high on nostalgic moments and keeping the essence of the story-telling intact just like the first part. The filmmaker made sure that he gets all the claps and hoots by executing big-screen action sequences along with jingoistic dialogues in the signature style of Tara Singh.

Talking about the performances, Sunny Deol is solid as Tara Singh and impresses with his machoism and dialogue delivery. Ameesha Patel portrays her character to perfection. Utkarsh Sharma and Simratt Kaur put their best foot forward with their characters. Manish Wadhwa shines as Hamid Iqbal and makes you hate his character to the core.

Anil Sharma has blended all the ingredients in perfect proportion to give us a massy-actioner for the big screen.

Rating: 3.5 (out of 5 stars)

Gadar 2 Movie Review: GADAR 2 works due to strong franchise value, right release period and a patriotic narrative.

Gadar 2 works big time due to a strong franchise value, the right release period and a narrative which instills patriotism., gadar 2 review {4.0/5} & review rating.

GADAR 2 is the story of a son and a father. After the events of the first half, Ashraf Ali (Amrish Puri) is slammed in Pakistan, and at the insistence of Hamid Iqbal, he is hanged. 17 years later, in 1971, Tara Singh ( Sunny Deol ) is residing peacefully with his wife Sakeena ( Ameesha Patel ) and son Charanjeet Singh aka Jeete (Utkarsh Sharma). The Indian army is preparing for war with Pakistan. Lieutenant Colonel Devendra Rawat (Gaurav Chopra) asks Tara to help a particular army unit that is stuck at the border while fighting the Pakistani army. Tara not only provides the Indian army unit with ammunition but also fights the enemy. The Pakistani army captures several Indian soldiers and truck drivers, who were with Tara. Tara is nowhere and is presumed to be imprisoned in Kot Lakhpat jail in Pakistan. Sakeena is devastated and so is Jeete. Jeete is unable to bear her mother’s condition. He runs to Pakistan on a fake passport to find his father. He meets Gul Khan aka Gullu (Mushtaq Khan) and Ashraf Ali’s brother Abdul Ali (Ehsan Khan) and asks for their assistance so that he can infiltrate Kot Lakhpat jail. As part of their plan, Jeete masquerades as a cook in the house of Kurban Khan (Mushtaq Kak). Jeete gets the job thanks to Kurban’s daughter Muskaan (Simratt Kaur), who falls for him. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Gadar 2

Shaktimaan's story has all the trappings of a commercial entertainer and is apt for the sequel of a historic blockbuster like GADAR – EK PREM KATHA [2001]. Shaktimaan's screenplay is decent. He has peppered the narrative with mass scenes. But in several places, it’s unimaginative. Shaktimaan's dialogues are clapworthy in certain scenes.

Anil Sharma's direction is fine. He has handled certain scenes like a pro like Tara answering what Jeete’s last wish is, Tara eyeing the hand pump and the shot thereafter and Jeete coming across a benevolent lady. Moreover, the first part is very memorable and the viewers already have a connection with Tara Singh. Hence, the mere appearance of Tara Singh on the big screen is enough to get the audience excited. There’s also a strong patriotic undercurrent that will work big time with the viewers. Besides, the father-son bond is moving in certain places.

On the flipside, the film is too long. The first half gets quite tedious and it might make viewers restless since Sunny Deol is missing from the film at this point for a good 30 minutes. The second half starts with a bang but after a point, it seemed like the makers ran out of ideas. Compare this with GADAR – EK PREM KATHA where though the second half was about Tara and his family running from the Pakistani authorities, there was a lot happening and one didn’t move from their seats even for a second. That kind of effect is missing in the sequel, sadly.

Speaking of performances, Sunny Deol is terrific. His screen presence is electrifying and it’s a pleasure to see him perform so energetically even at this age. Ameesha Patel is hardly there and is wasted. Utkarsh Sharma tries to give his best shot. But his performance leaves a lot to be desired. Manish Wadhwa is over the top but it works for his character. Simratt Kaur is lovely. Ehsan Khan, Mushtaq Khan and Mushtaq Kak are okay. Gaurav Chopra is fine. Aaditya Sharma (Imtehaan; Darmiyaan's nephew) is there for the heck of it. Lubna Salim (Pakistani mausi) is adorable.

Gadar 2 | Official Trailer | Sunny Deol | Ameesha Patel

Mithoon's music fails to work and is nowhere close to the outstanding music score of the first part.  'Udd Jaa Kaale Kaava' , its climax version and  'Main Nikla Gaddi Leke'  work chiefly because they are recreations.  'Dil Jhoom'  and  'Chal Tere Ishq Mein'  fail to impress. The makers should remove one of these songs, ideally.  'Khairiyat'  and  'Sura Soi'  don’t have a shelf life. Monty Sharma's background score has mass appeal.

Najeeb Khan's cinematography is neat. Muneesh Sappal's production design is realistic yet appealing. Ravi Varma, Tinu Verma, Sham Kaushal and Abbas Ali Moghul's action is one of the USPs of the film. Gagan Oberoi's costumes for Sunny Deol are quite cool. Nidhi Yasha's costumes for the rest of the characters are passable. Pixelld Studios and Prisca's VFX is good in the Amrish Puri shot but poor in the rest of the scenes. Ashfaq Makrani and Sanjay Sankla's editing is not upto the mark. Certain scenes seem disjointed. Also, the film should have been shorter by 10-15 minutes.

On the whole, GADAR 2 works big time due to a strong franchise value, the right release period, and a narrative that instills patriotism. At the box office, it will open huge and break records in the mass belts. The holidays in Week One will help the movie rake in huge moolah.

‘Gadar 2’ movie review: Sunny Deol is superb in this middling sequel

Sunny deol as tara singh reprises the hand pump and ‘zindabad’ scenes but there is very little that is original and impactful in the new film.

Anuj Kumar

Sunny Deol in ‘Gadar 2’

Tara Singh (Sunny Deol) once again takes out his high-decibel gaddi to Pakistan in this faithful sequel to Gadar . It is not as provocative as the original as driver Anil Sharma seeks to take a middle path. Perhaps, it feels like that because the socio-political atmosphere outside the theatre has become much more dramatic and shrill than what it was when the original released in 2001. Still, it is good that Sharma has toned down the jingoistic tone. Set ahead of the Bangladesh War, it talks of moving on from the hate-filled atmosphere of Partition. Instead of a particular religion, he comes down heavily on individuals who use religion as a tool to further their jaundiced political agenda. The problem is Sharma finds such people only across the border. Where is the representation of Ashraf Alis and Hamid Iqbals, the antagonist in the latest version, on this side of the divide?

The bad part is it is not as poignant as the original. For all its politics of hate, Gadar did have a tender love story between Tara and Sakina (Ameesha Patel) at its core and Uttam Singh’s music ensured that it pressed the right buttons.

Gadar 2 (Hindi)

This time the emotional ignition falls short as Tara returns to the neighbouring nation to get his son Jeete (Utkarsh Sharma) back. The idea is just to put Tara, the one-man army, back in Pakistan and let him and the audience go berserk. The route is contrived and the bulwark of sentiments is not strong enough to lift the action.

Having said that, few could match Sunny in depicting the intensity of a wounded soul. With honesty in his eyes and a hammer in his hands, he once again pulverises the opposition single-handedly. Wish Sharma had given him situations with more heft and humour to work with. Tara reprises the hand pump and ‘zindabad’ scenes but there is very little that is original and impactful in the sequel. The hand pump scene had a distinct rawness to it but here when Tara lifts the wheel with shlokas playing the background, we know where it is coming from. We know Sunny’s fight sequences have their own intrinsic logic but the climactic scene doesn’t pass even that test. It is simply lazy writing.

Manish Wadhwa impresses as the evil general whose hatred for Hindus and Hindustan emanates from a personal loss during the Partition but we miss the larger-than-life performance of Amrish Puri who matched Sunny in the snarling contest.

Utkarsh has got a lot of screen time to make his presence felt and provide the romantic tapestry to the action but for a large part, he remains just a satellite of Tara. Ameesha is made for melodrama and here again, she plays the teary-eyed wife and mother with conviction. The problem is she hasn’t added much to her creative arsenal since the original hit the screens. The result is as the film progresses, Sakeena becomes a one-note character who begs for empathy rather than earning it.

Anand Bakshi’s lyrics and Uttam Singh’s music were the lifeline of the original. Here Sayeed Quadri and Mithoon haven’t disappointed but still could not match the magic of ‘Udja Kale Kanwa’. ‘Chal Tere Ishq Main’ stands out and provides some padding to Utkarsh and newcomer Simrat Kaur to create a romantic bedrock for the action to take a leap but this prem katha could neither satisfy the bloodthirsty souls nor could it sing to the melody-minded. Tara twinkles somewhere in between.

Gadar 2 releases on August 11.

Gadar 2 releases on August 11.

Helmed by Anil Sharma, Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel's Gadar 2 is set against the backdrop of the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war.

Two days before the release of the much-awaited Gadar 2, Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel hosted a special screening of the film for the Indian Army. The actors, along with their team were in Delhi for the same. Reportedly, the Indian Army loved the film and appreciated the performance of the actors. This was also a unanimous response from them.

A source close to Bollywood Hungama shared, “The top brass of the Indian Army watched Gadar 2 last night with their respective families. The makers of the movie were elated to see the response from them as tears and claps ensued at the screening. Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel, and Utkarsh Sharma’s performances were appreciated by them.”

The source added, “The first screening of the movie received a thunderous response from them, and even better than Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. As they left the screening, they chanted ‘Hindustan Zindabad’ on their way out last night. The response from the crowd was super energetic and positive.”

Gadar 2 is scheduled to release in cinemas on 11th August 2023. Helmed by Anil Sharma, the film is set against the backdrop of the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war, the trailer promises action, drama and the iconic screams by Tara Singh. The trailer also hints at a nod to the famous handpump scene.

Speaking about the film, Sunny Deol has earlier said, “I am highly grateful to the fans for their unwavering support for Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, and I assure that Gadar 2 will deliver double the action, emotions, and entertainment.” Director Anil Sharma added, “We are excited about bringing back a story that epitomizes patriotism, intense action, a heartwarming father-son bond, and a love story that transcends all boundaries.”

Gadar 2 is set to clash with Akshay Kumar’s Oh My God 2 on Aug 11. Speaking about it, Sunny, in a chat with Etimes, had earlier said, “I don’t understand why people compare. Gadar didn’t have the perception, people thought it is this masala film, ‘yeh purani type ki picture hai, purane type ke gaane hai.’ On the other hand, people thought Lagaan was classic, etc. The so called people who talk about films had run down Gadar completely. It went on to become a people’s film and they loved it.”

GADAR 2 Movie Review

GADAR 2 Movie Cast & Crew

Some six years after a stubborn Amrish Puri finally relented and let his daughter go – with the words, " Jaa Simran jaa " – we had another blockbuster where a stubborn Amrish Puri finally relented and let his daughter go: in effect saying " Jaa Sakina jaa ." Both DDLJ and Gadar were blockbusters, and yet one film is still revered today while the other… not many talk about it, let alone write books and make documentaries about it. At least by the establishment, Gadar has generally come to be dismissed as a product of its time – but watching it again shows how powerful it is, how fresh it is. For one, how many films show the hero as a bloodthirsty Muslim-killer in his very first appearance? Later, his Muslim wife says, " Tum bhi to musalmaanon ko maar rahe the na - to mujhe kyon chhod diya ?" And he realises that hatred and rage can grip you when your relatives and friends are massacred, but love sets you free. Hence the unusual title, Gadar: Ek ‘Prem Katha’ . It’s an action film, but it’s built on a love story.

Now, consider the other side, after Sakina lands up in Pakistan and her parents refuse to let her go back to India. She says she cannot live without her son. Her mother reminds her that she, too, is living without her son – that is, Sakina's brother, who was butchered in front of her eyes as the family was fleeing to Pakistan. Gadar is filled with rock-solid masala moments, and the pinnacle is not the hand-pump scene but what happens just before that, when our hero is asked to embrace Islam if he wants his wife back. " Tumhe Islam qubool hai ?" he is asked, and I recall how – upon the film's initial release – I expected him to burst into Sunny Deol-ian rage. It's a screenwriting masterstroke to subvert those audience expectations and have him say, very calmly… " qubool hai ", and later agree to even say " Pakistan zindabad ." But – and here's what good masala writing is about – there’s a point that becomes a deal-breaker, and that’s when he’s asked to say, "Hindustan murdabad ." That is something Tara Singh won’t do. Again, because this is a ‘prem katha’ , he chooses love. He has it in his heart to love Pakistan and wish its people well – but not at the cost of hating India and Indians.

Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel return as Tara Singh and Sakina in Gadar 2 , directed, again, by Anil Sharma, and written, again, by Shaktimaan Talwar. The two decades between the films have not been kind to masala cinema, as the art died slowly at the hands of people making movies for a more, um, “sophisticated” audience. Even Pathaan , which I quite enjoyed, is more “homage masala ” than the real deal – and my main curiosity about this sequel was whether it would bring those older beats back. It does, and – to a large extent – in exactly the same way. One of the most time-tested methods of making a sequel is to tweak the formula but not necessarily reinvent the wheel. Which is why we laugh in Die Hard 2 , when Bruce Willis's wife wonders, after the terrorist attack, "Why do these things keep happening to us!" It's a knowing wink at the audience. In Gadar , the wife was stuck in Pakistan, and Tara Singh had to go and get her back. In Gadar 2 , their son gets stuck in Pakistan, and Tara Singh has to go get him back.

The first half is just wonderful. In the most classic way, it both reminds us of the earlier film and lays the path forward for the new one. We get reruns of Uttam Singh's blockbuster songs, 'Udja kaale kawaan ' and 'Main nikla gaddi leke' – the first to establish the ongoing ' prem katha ' between Tara Singh and Sakina, and the second to reinforce the ' prem katha ' between the parents and the son, Charanjeet. Ameesha and Sunny play their parts exactly the same way – the former with an alphabet-level arsenal of expressions (she's essentially the Punjabi version of the gajar halwa -serving maa ), and the latter with the secure knowledge that we never really went to a Sunny Deol movie to watch him act . Does he still look like he can uproot a hand pump with a bellow that can make the residents of the neighbouring state look up and wonder if it's going to rain? Yes, he does. End of story.

The surprise is Utkarsh Sharma, who, from some angles, resembles Vijay Deverakonda. He has a soft face, which the film is quick to acknowledge: a line talks about his " masoom chehra ". But he brings across the love for his parents, and a much-needed vulnerability that makes you root for his safety. He also gets a sharply sketched-out love angle with Simrat Kaur. This angle helps the story along, and takes the basic premise (“love knows no borders”) to the next generation. Manish Wadhwa takes over the Pakistani villain duties from Amrish Puri. The late actor's character arc is convincingly brought to an end, and the new villain is also someone whose hatred for India harks back to 'prem' : his family was butchered during the Partition. Plus, Tara Singh made a fool of the Pakistani army by killing 40 soldiers in the earlier film. All of this gives him enough motivation to refocus his hatred of a nation onto a single person. Manish Wadhwa gets lines like "Reham ki koi keemat nahi hai mazhab ki bazaar mein ", and he snarls them out with enough spittle to make you want to set Tara Singh loose on him. In other words, mission accomplished.

The story lays out all these narrative and character beats incrementally, so that by the interval point, we are fully primed for Tara Singh's invasion of Pakistan. But what's surprising is how emotional (as opposed to bombastic) both the pre-interval and post-interval portions are. Pre-interval, we get a plot point from Randhir Kapoor's Henna , which sets up the reason for Tara Singh to go missing for a while. In other words, we get a worried son. And just after the interval, we get a worried father. The emotion behind Tara Singh's foray into Pakistan is not that of a hero but that of a parent. We get one of Mithoon's lovely songs, Khairiyat , where Tara Singh makes a plea to " do jahan ke malik ", a god of two countries, two religions, to keep his son safe. Speaking of music, the film, set in 1971, uses a number of genres to colour its backdrop, from a thumri to soft jazz to the humming that opens a song from Aradhana .

The second half turns, expectedly, into a Sunny Deol show. But again, because the son is also involved, we get interesting diversions like a reversal of "love jihad" , where Hindu men are accused of seducing innocent Muslim girls. The scene where Tara Singh reveals himself is solid: " sambhavami yuge yuge " echoes in the background, as Tara Singh holds up a cannon wheel that makes him look like Krishna with the Sudarshana Chakra. (The Gadar films are pan-religious.) But the last quarter of Gadar 2 gets repetitive and isn't as inspired as what came before it. We smile at the nod to the hand-pump moment, but when Tara Singh begins to uproot bigger and bigger things, it quickly becomes ridiculous (though still fun in a campy way). Also, the constant separations and reunions of father and son become tiring – though it's nice, after ages, to see the trope of the family song bringing family members together.

The main problem in the film’s last quarter (where the masala flavour transforms to "mass" flavour) is the over-the-top action, which is clumsy and should have been staged much better – given that there's so much of it. The relentless slo-mo gets very annoying. And the simpler patriotism of the earlier film is replaced with a more strident voice, with Vande Mataram chants and so forth. But the core of the 'prem katha ' is never forgotten. We get the Good Muslim in a beautifully written scene involving Charanjeet and a Pakistani woman who gives him shelter. It's just emotional enough, without getting too sentimental. And there's a superb reimagining of the traditional Hindi-cinema " bidaai scene", where the bride is sent off to her in-laws' – but in the midst of great danger. All said, Gadar 2 works, and Tamil viewers will know what I mean when I say I left the theatre with the feeling of having watched a damn good 198os Vijayakanth movie.

'gadar 2' review: makes you wonder why you shouldn't just watch 'gadar' again, 'gadar 2' stars ameesha patel and sunny deol in the lead, and hit theatres on 11 august..

Rating: 1.5/5 Quints

If one decides to make a sequel, especially to a film that has become a cult classic, you'd assume it's because they have something new to say. Maybe the film will attempt to adjust to today's cinema landscape. It doesn't.

'Gadar 2' stars Ameesha Patel and Sunny Deol in the lead, and hit theatres on 11 August.

Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel in a still from Gadar 2.

In Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, Sunny Deol's Tara Singh growled and thrashed his way through his enemies to get his wife Sakina (Ameesha Patel) back from her father's (Amrish Puri) house in Pakistan.

The same domineering, enraged Tara Singh fills the screen in Gadar 2 as he is on his way to growl and thrash everyone standing in his way to get his son (Utkarsh Sharma) back from Pakistan. The template is so similar that one wonders why there's a second film to say exactly what the first film said.

'Gadar 2' stars Ameesha Patel and Sunny Deol in the lead, and hit theatres on 11 August.

A still from Gadar 2.

Gadar: Ek Prem Katha was criticised for being too loud and flashy and melodramatic and for being an unequivocally jingoistic film. The sequel walks in its predecessor's flawed footsteps.

It's 1971 and Tara, Sakina, and their son Charanjeet are living happily ever after, even though Tara is disappointed at his son’s career choices. On the other hand, war is on the horizon. One border skirmish later, Tara is presumed to be imprisoned across the border and Jeete (Charanjeet) sets off to rescue him.

Sakina (Patel) doesn’t have much to do in the film, especially after the main conflict is kicked off. A love interest is introduced for Jeete as well, Muskaan (Simrat Kaur), a young girl he meets in Pakistan. High emotional heft is demanded of all actors and they deliver. But since literally nothing else is demanded of them, no moments of quiet comfort or subtle resilience, everything comes across as being seeped in melodrama.

'Gadar 2' stars Ameesha Patel and Sunny Deol in the lead, and hit theatres on 11 August.

The film doesn't leave space for a viewer to catch their breath and that's not because it has high-octane action sequences that keep you at the edge of your seat. The background score is so loud that words like silence and foley completely lose their meaning; almost every dialogue is punctuated with a soundtrack of its own.

The one thing working for Gadar 2 is its nostalgia – the songs from Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (the evergreen 'Main Nikla Gaddi Leke' for instance) evoke the same foot-thumping as they did all those years ago.

The Gadar 2 originals, even though not bad songs, don't have any of that charm.

The camerawork in Gadar 2 is stable but that’s about it. There is no distance from the subject; there is no desire to let the story tell itself. For instance, when a bullet is shot and the camera jolts into the shot, it’s disconcerting. When dutch angles are placed randomly across the really long runtime, it’s jarring.

If you’re a fan of a hypermasculine hero uprooting large infrastructure straight out of the ground, Gadar 2 might pack a punch for you because Tara Singh is all Tara Singh.

'Gadar 2' stars Ameesha Patel and Sunny Deol in the lead, and hit theatres on 11 August.

The loss of Amrish Puri means that the film doesn’t have a staunch villain keeping it in place. Most of the action scenes come across as nonsensical because it feels like the people on the other side of the fight also want the main father-son duo to win. How, then, is one supposed to feel tension?

Indian cinema has come a long way from needing to rely on over the top dialogues screamed over an even louder background score; almost pushing the audience to feel what the characters feel. Even the very subtle anti-war messaging in Gadar: Ek Prem Katha is replaced with a ‘me vs you’.

'Gadar 2' stars Ameesha Patel and Sunny Deol in the lead, and hit theatres on 11 August.

Think of war films like Shershaah or Pathaan and think of Bollywood masala like Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. We’re at a place where Indian cinema, while still keeping in touch with Bollywood roots, is evolving into a new sensibility, and is adjusting to its audience. In a time like this, a film that boasts of nothing new brings only that to the table – nothing new.

Unlocking the holiday appeal: Why Bollywood films thrive during festive periods

Why does the film industry prefer to release films during the festive period, and do they really benefit from this strategy film trade experts weigh in..

Listen to Story

Box office performance of Holiday releases

  • Bollywood hopes for revival with festive releases
  • Independence Day boosts box office revenue
  • Strategic release dates are crucial for box office

"Films are dying." "Bollywood is dead." "The worst phase of Hindi cinema."

You might have heard these dramatic statements, and they aren’t entirely false. It has been a lacklustre year at the box office so far. However, there is still some hope. There’s a reason not to be a complete pessimist about the future of Bollywood.

With the upcoming Independence Day and Rakshabandhan holidays on the horizon—prime moviegoing times for Indians—there is a glimmer of hope. For many, it will mean an extra-long weekend away from work and plenty of family time to fill. Bollywood filmmakers are ready to seize this opportunity with a lineup that includes Stree 2, Khel Khel Mein, and Vedaa. These releases aim to attract cinephiles back to the theatres and rejuvenate the industry’s fortunes.

This brings us to the question: Why does the film industry prefer to release films during the festive period, and do they really benefit from this strategy?

"In India, cricket and movies are a favourite pastime. Big films are planned around holidays to capitalise on people turning to cinema halls for some family time," explained film producer and trade expert Girish Johar. He added that films released around holidays, especially national holidays like Republic Day and Independence Day, often see a boost of 20-30 per cent in their overall revenue.

Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh supported Johar's claim and shared how an Independence Day release typically performs better than films released on regular days.

"It is a holiday across the country. It’s not like one state observes a holiday while another does not. This year, it falls on a Thursday, and in some places, Monday is also a holiday due to Rakshabandhan. With so many holidays, why would anyone skip this date? It’s the best time to release a film from a revenue perspective," Taran Adarsh told IndiaToday.in.

Shah Rukh Khan's Pathaan, released on January 25, 2023, capitalised on the Republic Day holiday and earned Rs 543.05 crore, becoming the third-highest grosser in India. Its predecessor, Gadar 2, an Independence Day release on August 11, 2023, earned Rs 525.45 crore. Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff’s War, released during the Gandhi Jayanti holiday in 2019, became the biggest hit of the year with Rs 318.01 crore.

padmaavat

He added, "Some of the biggest films have been released on non-holidays and have gone on to do extraordinary business."

The top-grossing Bollywood film so far, Jawan, led by Shah Rukh Khan, was released on September 7 with no holiday around its release. It earned Rs 643.87 crore. Similarly, Ranbir Kapoor's Animal, which holds the second spot in the list of all-time top grossers with Rs 556.36 crore, was released on December 1, far from the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

Filmmakers, distributors, actors, producers, and studio owners all target holidays for their film releases. Taran Adarsh stated, "It is a period when you can recover the shortfall."

The three Khans of Bollywood have unofficially reserved different holiday periods for their films. Aamir Khan has been releasing his films around Christmas since Ghajini in 2008 (Hindi cinema’s first Rs 100-crore earner). Salman Khan has made Eid his exclusive slot , while Shah Rukh Khan, who often stars in family and romantic dramas, tries to book a Diwali release. His 2014 film Happy New Year was released during Diwali and earned Rs 203 crore.

Stree 2 release

The film marketplace has evolved significantly from its past as a dumping ground. Studios now put considerable effort into promoting their films through trailers and songs, with the release date remaining a crucial part of their strategic plan.

Johar explained the importance of the release date for a film’s success at the box office.

"It (the release date) is one of the most critical decisions for the producer and distributor. Factors include the genre of the film, when a film of the same genre was released, whether there is a saturation of this particular genre, or if there is an appropriate gap between releases. Similarly, the timing of the actor's last film and the gap between their two releases are important. The genre of the film must also suit the timing," said Girish Johar.

He continued, "For instance, you cannot release a sad film around Diwali, as it is a family festival and a happy day for many. At that time, very dry or sad dramas are unsuitable. This is why happy, comedic entertainers are typically released around Diwali. There are many factors to consider when deciding the release date, and it is crucial to a film’s success."
