Finding free learning games for kindergartners that are age-appropriate and that meet essential objectives can be tough. While there are thousands of websites that claim to offer quality educational games for free, this is not always the case. 

It can be very frustrating as a parent (and homeschooling mom) to try to find additional resources for your child that check all of the boxes. So that’s why I created this list of free learning games for kindergarteners.

This website offers tons of resources (aligned with current Common Core Standards) for students of all ages that include games, worksheets, and lesson plans for most subjects.

Simply choose your child’s grade level and create an account to get started! 

Education.com allows 3 monthly downloads for free, but if you want unlimited access to all of their resources they offer an affordable monthly membership .

If you are a homeschooling parent , they offer additional discounts to make the monthly fee even more affordable.

Cool Kindergarten

Cool Kindergarten is designed specifically for 5 and 6-year-olds to practice math and reading skills. This resource is always free and a great alternative to other paid memberships, such as ABC Mouse. 

They also offer online audiobook videos and games that would be lots of fun if your child had some free time to play age-appropriate games.

The website is perfect for young learners because they can navigate independently without you having to worry about them landing on other websites by accident.

If your child enjoys watching their favorite shows on PBS, they will love these free learning games!

Your preschoolers and kindergarteners will recognize familiar faces, which will increase their engagement and make learning even more fun!

PBS Kids offers learning games for reading , math, science , engineering, as well as other interesting topics. 

Turtle Diary 

This website offers tons of free learning games for kindergarteners up to fifth grade. Above each game, you will find a small intro and learning objective.

They even offer games to teach typing and geography along with the other core subjects.

Unfortunately, the major downside to this resource is the ads.

I am NOT a fan of websites for children that have pop up ads because they can be misleading to your child and cause them to be redirected from the platform. 

If you do decide to use Turtle Diary, I would suggest either being seated with your child while he/she is playing (so you can make sure they are staying on the actual website) or purchasing the premium option, which removes the ads and has the added bonus of allowing you to track your student’s progress. 

Fun Brain Jr. 

Fun Brain Jr. is a fantastic place for children, ages 2 to 6, to play games and learn. You will find printable downloads and stickers that kids earn as they progress thru the games.

While you won’t find as many games on Fun Brain Jr. as other websites, the fact that everything is free makes it well worth your time to check out!

And if you’re specifically looking for math and reading learning games , this is the place to be.

Splash Learn 

With over 61 free math games, your kindergartener will never be bored. All of the resources that Splash Learn offers align with Common Core Standards.

Their website contains math materials only and there is no subscription required!

You don’t have to worry about ads either, which will keep your student on track without being distracted. 

Nick Jr. 

Another learning library similar to PBS Kids, your students will go bananas when they get to play along with their favorite characters.

While this website’s games don’t align with Common Core State Standards specifically, your child will still be learning and practicing important skills along with their favorite characters from Nick Jr.

And remember, the key to keeping kids engaged during learning is excitement! 

Cool Math 4 Kids

Here’s another free learning resource catered towards all things math!

This website actually offers games for ages 5-12, which is perfect if you have multiple kids on tech time at once.

Your kids will be able to access games covering a variety of essential math concepts.

As an added bonus, Cool Math 4 Kids also has a sister site, CoolMath.com , which is rated for kids 13 and up. 

Time for Kids 

Coming straight from Time Magazine, Time for Kids is packed with articles and photos covering the environment, current events, health, sports, and more!

Although this website is not as interactive or colorful as compared to the other resources listed, it’s a fantastic way to let kids see the news from an age-appropriate perspective. 

Fun Brain 

Once your kids visit this site, you will definitely want to bookmark it!

Fun Brain offers games, reading resources, videos, and a math zone for kids from preschool to 8th grade!

The site is straightforward when it comes to navigation, and you can filter the learning games so that only those for kindergarten populate to make it easier for your child. 

Highlights Kids 

Highlights magazine always makes me nostalgic because it was the first “real” magazine subscription designed specifically for kids.

I remember finding them in every waiting room I visited and seeing them in the library at school. 

They’ve definitely come a long way since then with four different versions from babies to school-aged children as well as bilingual options!

They even have an online space where your child can find tons of activities and free learning games for kindergarteners that would be great to incorporate into family time. You will also find ideas for crafts and kid-friendly recipes! 

Khan Academy 

Looking for high-quality content?

Khan Academy offers amazing content for learners up to the college level! While you have to make an account to access everything, the account is completely free…so no worries.

You will find content for just about any topic imaginable and a wealth of resources for all of the core subjects. It’s also super-simple to track your child’s progress with their reports! 

From personal experience, I can tell you that Khan Academy is our go-to resource whenever they need a little more help on a particular concept from Algebra and Geometry to History!

It’s truly a fantastic resource, and that is why I had to include it on this list of free learning games for kindergarteners.

National Geographic Kids 

The videos and images that National Geographic Kids have in their magazines and on their websites are out of this world!

Their content is very reliable and engaging no matter what your student likes learning.

They have every topic imaginable ranging from animals to space…and just so you know, the quiz games are so much fun! 

Cookie 

Cookie.com offers hundreds of free learning activities including games created around language, math, and science!

And be sure to check out their printable worksheet section if you are a classroom teacher, homeschooling family, or you just want your child to have some extra activities at home! 

HOMER  

The Homer app offers a free 30 day trial for students between the ages of 2 and 8. This app was developed by experts and has been shown to increase reading scores by as much as 74%.

Kids love the fact that the app is specialized to their interests while parents appreciate the fact that their kids are reading, exploring math concepts, and improving their thinking skills in unique and creative ways.

Remember, learning doesn’t have to be boring! Because kids of all ages love interactive websites and apps, I can guarantee that these are going to be a hit.

💡 Before we begin: All the activities are made with BookWidgets. You can use them for free or design new, fun kindergarten lesson ideas yourself. In preschool, young learners already get in touch with the basics of mathematics and counting. I’m sharing fun 4 activities for early childhood education students to complete. This can be in a 1-to-1 classroom setup, as well as in a 1-to-many setup. In both cases, the teacher has an important role in explaining the activities.

1. Counting until 10 with our hands

The first stage of counting to ten always happens with our fingers! This pair-matching activity is just that. Let your students pick a hand card and let them discover the number by counting it on their own hands. Now, they need to connect the hand card with the right number card.

💡 Pro tip : Add text-to-speech so the numbers can be read out loud. This way, your students can recognize the numbers and also know how they sound. When you’re doing this classically, the teacher can just read them out loud and ask the students to name a number they see or repeat the number.

2. Count the animals

“How many animals do you see?” This is probably the question every teacher asks their early childhood students. I created a fun, auto-graded activity in which your preschoolers need to count the animals and write down the number.

💡 Pro tip : Use a worksheet widget and choose the “ Annotate Picture ” question to create fun counting worksheets that are automatically graded! You can find many fun visuals like the one I used on Canva .

3. Counting to 10

This activity has the same principle but is a bit easier. Your kindergarten students don’t need to write down the number as it’s already given. They need to drag and drop the number in the right box.

💡 Pro tip : Choose a worksheet widget and pick the “Picture Drag and Drop” question. This is an advanced use of this question type. Here’s a video tutorial on how to get this BookWidgets question type as you see it.

4. What makes 10?

This is one of the first arithmetic activities for preschoolers. They can use their hands to count and find the matching pairs. Which two numbers make 10?

💡 Pro tip : Add audio instructions when you’re not around so your students still know what to do, or you can organize some corner work with different counting activities. With these math and counting activities, you can already create multiple areas for cornerwork!

5. Paint by numbers

6. Addition and subtraction arithmetic

The Arithmetic widget for preschool students makes it easy for young learners to practice mathematical skills like addition and subtraction. Students solve the problems to reveal a reward word. If this is still a bit too hard for your young learners, you can share this activity on the big screen. For each arithmetic, ask your students to use their hands to count and find the solution.

Letter recognition, learning to write their name, and first sight words are all engaging language activities for kindergarten students. These activities are a good addition to your other kindergarten curriculum resources, but you might need to make some changes depending on where you’re from, as the kindergarten curriculum will have some changes from country to country.

7. Recognize new words

This activity focuses on recognizing words from sounds. This is a great activity for teaching new words and sounds to your younger learners, even before they learn the alphabet.

💡 Pro tip : Use audio (by using the voice recorder in BookWidgets) and images (by uploading them from the built-in Pixabay library). Students can zoom in on the images if needed by clicking on them.

8. Learning the alphabet

Learning the alphabet and recognizing the letters is a big goal when your students move on to the first grade. This Video Quiz activity is perfect for learning the alphabet and knowing how the letters sound and look like.

💡 Pro tip : A Video Quiz is perfect for visual learning. Include audio so students can practice this activity individually as often as they like or need to. The activity is auto-graded, so the teacher doesn’t need to check every student. It’s also fun to do this activity in a group and let your students repeat the letters out loud!

9. Letter recognition - Letters in my name

This is probably the first “name” activity for early childhood education. Once your students recognize the letters of the alphabet, they learn to recognize the letters in their names. The next step, obviously, is to teach them to write the letters in their name.

💡 Pro tip : Add a background image to a whiteboard widget so your students can draw on it. You can do any letter recognition activity if the image shows the alphabet. Ask them to circle the letters that appear in different words. Start with sight words like sun, dog, cat, etc. Just change the title, and you will have a new activity!

11. Emoji sight words flashcards

This sight words activity is fun and useful as emojis are easy to include in activities and represent easy words most of the time. Students see the emoji and say what they see. They flip the card and listen to the pronunciation of the word.

💡 Pro tip : BookWidgets flashcards have a text-to-speech optionality. Enable it for the words so students can recognize the letters and listen to them.

12. Sight words crossword

After practicing the words with the flashcards, your students can try to write the words down in the crossword. They learn to spell the short and easy words. This activity might be a bit too hard for younger learners. So, take the lead and share the crossword on the big screen. When they name an emoji, ask them which letter is in the words and where they should put the letters.

💡 Pro tip : Adding emoji’s to your activities is 10x faster then looking for images to upload. Right-click your mouse and choose “Emoji & symbols”. That’s it!

13. New words pair matching

A pair-matching game is perfect for teaching new words and vocabulary to kindergarten students. In this activity, your learners need to match an image with the sound of the words. This one is about the face, but the same goes for words in different themes: the body, the weather, the garden, the forest, the house, the room, animals, and much more. I’ll share some more activities below in the section about teaching with “ themes ” in kindergarten. For subjects and words your learners can see, ask them to point them out. In this example, ask them to point out their nose, eyes, cheeks, etc.

💡 Pro tip : All BookWidgets activities that come in pairs are really easy to transform into a new activity. Think about quizzes with pair-matching question types, flashcards, memory games, crossword puzzles, and word search puzzles… Check out this article to find out how to use the same content in different activities with just a few clicks.

14. Dress like an animal!

Teach new words with a fun twist. This activity is all about that! First, ask your students to come to school dressed like animals. It’s fun as they will learn all about animals. Every animal has its own characteristics your students will recognize. They only have to shout out the animals the kids in the pictures are dressed in. This is a group activity. When flipping the cards, ask your students to listen to the word, repeat it, and… make the animal sound! This activity is designed by Bart Natens.

15. Get funky with sounds!

💡 Pro tip : A BookWidgets hotspot image activity is perfect for creating digital discovery posters on which students have to click, read, and listen.

16. Drawing dictation - The house

This is one of my favorite kindergarten classroom activities created by a Dutch Kindergarten teacher, Virginie Lauwers. This is a listening activity but also shows the words your students learned so they can recognize them.

💡 Pro tip : Use a Split Whiteboard activity and add audio, text, and images so students can already learn to recognize words. Students can easily pause and resume the audio.

Embarking on the journey of digital discovery activities with young learners can be both exciting and daunting. In this part, I will show you some engaging kindergarten resources designed to foster exploration, fine motor skills, learning, and creativity in the digital realm.

17. Senses in the garden

This activity teaches kindergarten students to be aware of their surroundings and about the senses. Let them walk on the playground and visit the forest, park, or garden so they can draw things they can see, hear, smell, and touch.

💡 Pro tip : In this BookWidgets whiteboard activity, you can also enable your learners to upload an image/ take a picture instead of only drawing on the whiteboard.

18. Recognize shapes worksheet

This is probably the first geometry activity early childhood students will get. Let your students drag and drop familiar icons or images with the right shape to the right box.

💡 Pro tip : Choose a worksheet widget and pick the “Picture drag and drop” question type. If you can’t find the right images using the Pixabay integration, use “ The noun project ” for all the icons you need. It’s my favorite icon go-to website.

19. Recognize shapes in objects - Photo Search

This activity follows the previous one. Here, your students need to walk around in their classroom, school, and playground and recognize the different shapes in the objects in their daily lives. They need to take a picture and add it as an answer to their question. This activity is very engaging for young learners and perfect for small student groups using tablets.

💡 Pro tip : The photo question in a BookWidgets quiz or worksheet is perfect for discovery activities like this one. Duplicate the widget and change the question to a new discovery activity for kindergarten.

20. Building with color blocks

This activity teaches your young learners lots of different things: they build their motor skills, learn to recognize colors and get a sense of spatial awareness.

💡 Pro tip : If you also want to incorporate the skill “learning to play with others”, add another wheel to this BookWidgets randomness activity with the same images. Let one student build the first block tower and the other the second. When done, your students can switch positions and check each other’s work.

21. Old MacDonald had a farm…

As this is the only music activity I’m sharing, it needed to go under this blog post’s “discovery” section. But, when you’re teaching with themes, and “farm or animals” is probably a theme, make sure to include this one too. This piano activity works best when you have tablets available. Your students can listen to the song and try to replicate it using the piano keyboard below. I know they will make countless mistakes, but it can be the first introduction to musical instruments in a playful, fun way.

💡 Pro tip : You can teach the song with its lyrics so students can sing along!

22. The weather memory game

Of course, we’re teaching our kindergarten kids new vocabulary, and it can be part of a “weather-themed lesson series”, but I’m showing this activity here because students learn to look outside and discover the weather. This is a fun memory game for a 1-to-many classroom setup. I made sure students could shout the number of the cards so the teacher could flip the two cards they indicated. Can your students remember where the matching cards are?

💡 Pro tip : The Memory Game widget can be used to practice newly learned concepts and words. When finished, ask your students a follow-up question so they think about what they’ve learned and trigger their knowledge immediately after. In this example, I ask them to look outside and tell me the weather for that day. You can do this using text and audio. This digital preschool resource is designed by Bart Natens.

23. Bingo playground

Create a bingo sheet that’s different for every young learner and add familiar images. Now, your students can scan the bingo QR code you provide using their tablet and walk around the playground, the park, the forest, you name it. Whenever they encounter something that represents one of the images on their bingo sheet, they can tap it. The students that find all the activities first win!

💡 Pro tip : Duplicate this bingo card and add more images that represent your school’s playground. If you add an “alt text” to the images, you can even read out loud what’s on the images by enabling the text-to-speech option.

24. Heartfelt creations

Crafting and creativity are important activities in kindergarten as they will improve your students’ motor skills. They learn fine motor skills by drawing and using glue and scissors. This activity is just about that! You can do the activity around Valentine’s Day or when you focus on the theme “ Friendship and Kindness ”. It’s always a good idea to add the different steps of the creation process in a BookWidgets quiz. Make sure to share it on the big screen as your students follow along with all the steps. You also have to show the steps by crafting yourself.

💡 Pro tip : By adding a photo question to your craft quiz, you can assign some homework during the holidays, a school break, or remote teaching. This way, the parents have a ready-to-use activity, and your students can upload their crafts to you. Now, you can print them out and decorate your classroom, and your learners will find their artwork when they come back to school.

25. Emoji artwork

This activity is all about bringing your toddlers’ fantasies and creating thinking alive. This is a creative assignment best given when you have tablets available. Your students need to spin the wheels, and 3 emojis will pop up. Now, they have to draw an artwork using the whiteboard on the other side with those 3 emojis. They can use the digital whiteboard tools or draw on paper. When they are done, they can upload a picture of their paper artwork and add it to the whiteboard. Not everything needs to be digital all the way. Practicing drawing on paper will refine your preschoolers’ motor skills.

💡 Pro tip : Use a “ Split Whiteboard ” widget to combine widgets and create fun activities. I first created a “ Randomness ” widget in the example above and shared that link in a Split Whiteboard widget.

26. Cotton ball launcher

This creative Video Quiz STEM activity is so much fun. It can be a classroom project or, again, homework to do with the child’s parents. In both cases, the adult plays an important role when it comes to providing instructions. We already give them in the Video Quiz activity, step by step, but you’ll have to read them out loud and make sure your younger learners understand.

💡 Pro tip : Adding multiple photo questions to your Video Quiz lets you follow up on your student’s learning process and see where things went wrong.

Keeping kindergarten students engaged and energized is key to a successful learning experience. 27. Get on that chair!

This activity is so much fun and teaches your preschoolers all about the chronological order of the alphabet and numbers. Make a line with chairs, and a student stands up straight on each chair. Spin the wheel and ask your students to collaborate and switch positions (without touching the ground) based on the assignment on the wheel. This assignment is text-based, so you’ll have to explain. They will probably also need your help and instructions. Guide them by asking the right questions.

💡 Pro tip : Duplicate this activity into your BookWidgets account and add other assignment instructions. You can adapt the activities to your student’s age and skills. You can also add icons and images instead of text.

28. Movement energizers

I also used the fun “Randomness” widget for this activity, but I added 4 wheels with images instead of 1 with text. As you can see in both examples, the possibilities of this spinner activity are endless! Share this activity with your students on the big screen 2 to 3 times a day, and ask a student to come forward and spin the wheel. That student shows the activity the others must do. They explain and show it to the others. It teaches your learners to give clear instructions to other students using their voice and body language. And…it’s a fun kindergarten energizer!

29. Animals

I’m sharing 3 activities about animals you can use right away. Remember these three other fun activities I already shared above? 👉 flashcards activity “Dress like an animal” , “ Count the animals ”, and “ Paint by numbers ”. They fit right in here, too.

Spring animals memory game

In this animal-themed kindergarten lesson idea, children are presented with a grid of cards featuring various springtime animals, such as bunnies, chicks, and butterflies, each paired with an identical match. The objective is for students to flip over the cards, one at a time, to find matching pairs by remembering the placement of each animal. This activity not only enhances memory and concentration skills but also introduces young learners to the vibrant world of springtime fauna in an interactive and entertaining manner. 💡 Pro tip : Enable the “ add numbers ” option so your students can pick cards to turn over by saying the numbers.

Farm animals spot the difference game

This farm-themed digital activity is designed for kindergarten students to sharpen their observation skills. In this game, children are presented with two images of farm scenes featuring various animals. Their task is to identify and click on the differences between the two pictures. This engaging activity enhances visual discrimination abilities and introduces young learners to the diversity of farm animals in a fun and interactive way.

💡 Pro tip : Instead of just highlighting the differences, you can mention what’s different too by adding a short explanation in the configuration. You can also ask students a specific question for each difference. It will engage them more with the learning subject.

Forest animals discovery poster

This innovative Valentine’s Day teaching strategy showcases various animals in their natural habitats, each decorated with a Valentine’s theme. You can see this activity fits in perfectly with both themes: animals and Valentine’s Day. This Hotspot Image activity reveals a fun fact about each animal, such as their habitats, diet, or unique characteristics. This interactive poster image is designed to engage and benefit learners of all ages. With a particular emphasis on its effectiveness for young learners, it supports the students’ learning and provides valuable additional support for emerging readers.

30. Transportation and vehicles

I created 3 digital learning games for preschoolers you can use to practice vocabulary and understand the different ways of transportation or vehicles. You can add more fun activities on this theme that are not digital. A fun color plate is always good to refine your student’s motor skills.

Spot the difference - Train activity

This activity focuses on spotting the differences between two train images. The differences are colors, so it teaches your students the differences in color.

Jigsaw puzzle

A digital jigsaw puzzle is the perfect introduction activity for any theme. When your students complete the jigsaw puzzle, you can ask them a follow-up question related to the lesson subject.

💡 Pro tip : Young learners can click the “?” icon to get a hint of the completed jigsaw puzzle. You can disable showing this hint for older students. You can also play with the amount of puzzle pieces to make this activity harder or easier.

Transportation BINGO!

Let your students open this bingo sheet by sharing a link/QR code or shortcode. This activity works best on tablets. If you don’t have tablets for all your students, don’t worry. You can create smaller groups for 1 tablet. For this activity, the teacher explains the means of transportation without mentioning the name. For example, “ I reach my destination by traveling on hot air. I let the wind guide me, and I float high above the ground ”. Your students shout out what it is, “ A hot air balloon! ” and click the image. The bingo sheets are all arranged differently. This ensures some groups will have 3 in a row quicker than others as they won’t have the same images on their sheet. The ultimate goal is for a group to have BINGO! when they tapped all the images.

31. Friendship & Love

These digital kindergarten lessons are all about love, friendship, kindness, appreciation, and acceptance. You can address this subject around Valentine’s Day, as the themes fit right in. Remember, the craft activity, “Heartfelt creations” and the “ Wildlife wonders ” discovery poster all fit in this theme.

Be a good friend BINGO!

During the week, your students must complete 1 classroom bingo by checking every card on the sheet. They can do most of them in school, but being a good friend doesn’t stop there. Some of the things they can do at home.

💡 Pro tip : If you don’t have many tablets or devices available, you can use the bingo game in a one-to-many classroom setup and make it a group effort to check all the cards on the Bingo sheet.

Random acts of kindness

Share this random spinner every morning of the week to choose a random act of kindness your young learners need to complete

Heart pairs

Practice colors with this love pair matching game. Your preschoolers listen to the color and need to match it with the right colored heart.

💡 Pro tip : Include audio in your pairs for younger learners and use text instead of audio for older learners.

Letter recognition

This is a letter recognition activity I already shared above but with a Valentine’s Day twist. Let your students circle the letters that appear in the word “Valentine’s Day”. Duplicate the activity and make several versions, or delete the title. This way, you can reuse this activity. Write down your “love” words on the blackboard so they know which letters to circle. Think of “love, friendship, kindness, appreciation, and acceptation”. When they complete the activity, ask them to explain what the words mean to them and click the dustbin icon to start over and move on to the next word.

Easter is always fun as the Easter Bunny comes around, and your students can go on an egg hunt! Here are some fun Easter themed activities for your preschoolers and kindergarten students.

Easter puzzle series

This fun planner activity has 4 fun Easter themed jigsaw puzzles with different difficulty lessons. Perfect for differentiating your kindergarten lessons. Your students start with 2 easy jigsaw puzzles. When done, they check off the activities and add 2 more activities using the “+” icon. This spot-the-difference game for kindergarten fits right into the Easter theme. Can your students find all the differences?

33. Pirates

This fun kindergarten classroom activity triggers your students’ imagination. Let them invent fun pirate, adventure, and treasure hunt stories based on the images that come up in the randomness widget. This fun preschool activity is created by Bart Natens.

34. Classroom rules discovery poster

This interactive poster explains your kindergarten classroom rules. Create a visual using tools like Canva or Adobe Express and make it interactive with the BookWidgets hotspot image widget. Add audio so students can listen to the classroom rules.

35. Classroom rules pair matching game

Discuss your kindergarten classroom rules with your students at the beginning of the school year by giving them this interactive pair-matching game. This makes rules fun and engages your students with them as well.

36. Pee break!

It’s not always easy managing a classroom full of kindergarten students during a bathroom break. This fun pair-matching activity can be used to teach your young learners what to do when they go to the bathroom. Let them find the matching pairs and tell what the images represent. You will see… your students will bring in some funny bathroom stories you didn’t ask for… 😅 Make sure they use this information when they actually go to the bathroom. This creative bathroom etiquette pair matching game is created by Bart Natens.

37. Random student picker

Add the names or, even better, headshot pictures of your students to create a random name picker like the one below. Duplicate the activity and replace the given names with your students’ names. Use your random student picker when you need a volunteer or hand out chores or tasks. Let a student spin the wheel when handing out the tasks.

38. Random group generator

As for the student picker, the same goes for generating random student groups. Use a randomness widget with multiple wheels to create random groups.

39. Digital dice

Dices are small, go missing all the time, and can be dangerous for young learners. Introducing… the digital dice. Use the activity below for any activity that requires a dice.

💡 Pro tip : Create a randomness widget with two wheels. This gives you a double dice. You can use it for counting activities.

40. Smart Symbols

Smart Symbols is supportive software for early childhood education. They provide actionable insights into the daily activities of toddlers in crowded classrooms by collecting data from both teachers and children. Reading & Language Arts Activities

One of the very best things parents can do with their children at home is read, read, read! This title, Do Not Lick This Book , by Iden Ben-Barak is a great one for teaching hygiene rules! Listen to read-alouds.

Research shows that listening to fluent readers read aloud is one of the ways to build better readers. And lucky for us, many of our favorite authors are offering online read-alouds and activities on social media. Some of the big names include Mac Barnett, Oliver Jeffers, and Peter Reynolds. In addition, Audible is offering free audiobooks for kids during school closures. Treat your little one to a classic like Winnie the Pooh.

Write stories.

For kindergartners who are beginning writers, K12Reader has a great list of writing prompts five- and six-years-olds will enjoy. Find subjects from spiders to favorite books and favorite foods. Pre-writers can dictate their writing to an adult or tell a story aloud.

Do word work games.

Check out the website IXL for word work activities that are the just right for kindergartners. There are tons of activities—from identifying letters to learning vowel sounds and sight words.

Do hands-on activities.

Try some of these fun alphabet activities that reinforce letter learning, like practicing letter formation with shaving cream on a cookie sheet, going on an alphabet scavenger hunt, and drawing pictures from letters.

Math Activities

Play counting games..

Learn to play cards.

A simple deck of playing cards can provide many ways to practice math skills. You can use them for number identification (play a memory game), sequencing (put cards in numerical order), addition (add cards together to race to 20), and more. Check out more ideas here .

Read a book about numbers.

Social Studies Activities

Start with the basics..

According to an article in Family Education , “In the earliest years of school, the social studies curriculum is oriented toward the family and the neighborhood, social relationships, and what might be called civic responsibilities.” There are lots of simple activities you can do at home like teaching your child their address and phone number, the names of all the people in your family, and features of your neighborhood.

Read folk tales.

Folk tales are a great tool to learn about history and cultures and there are so many great books and videos to choose from. From The Little Red Hen and Henny Penny to the Anansi the Spider and How Dragons Came to Be , your child will love these meaningful stories.

Tune in to Brainpop Jr..

  Brainpop Jr. is offering free access for families impacted by school closures.  It is an amazing resource that offers fun, engaging videos, games and quizzes across the curriculum. Check out their social studies units, including communities, citizenship, and American history, here .

Find your place in the world.

Explore Google Maps and find your home, school, city, and your child’s favorite ice cream shop. Or think big and explore the world’s most detailed globe with Google Earth !

Learn about your culture.

Talk with your child about your family’s roots and where your ancestors come from. What holidays do you celebrate? What rituals are important to you? Are there crafts or clothing that represent your culture? FaceTime a friend who has a different cultural background and ask them about their traditions.

Build healthy habits alongside your kids. Learn the basics of breathing, postures, and stretches with this fun video.

Cook with your kids.

Active Learning Strategies: 25 Games and Activities to Get Kids Moving and Learning!

At The Inspired Treehouse, we’re big advocates of active learning  for kids. These awesome active learning strategies, games, and activities are the perfect way to get kids moving and learning!

 As kids come off of long summer breaks with days filled from with continuous movement from dawn to dusk, it can be hard for them to sit still and pay attention  to learning activities for any stretch of time.  We’re pretty sure that it’s hard for teachers to sit still all day too!

To us, nothing is more important, especially during the transition from summer to school, than getting kids up out of those chairs and inspiring them to move while they learn!

What the Research Says…

Research has shown that there are 10 critical reasons that active learning strategies should be used to enhance education.  Here are a few of those reasons:

-whole body movement makes learning more efficient

-it allows for implicit learning

-children are able to refocus their attention

-movement improves brain function, reduces stress and improves circulation.

This time of year, teachers, parents, and therapists everywhere are looking for new active learning strategies to support kids in the classroom, the therapy room, and at home and we’re here to help!  Here are 25 awesome  ideas for learning through movement!  These ideas would be perfect for a therapist to use when offering push-in services in the classroom setting.

25 Active Learning Games and Activities

1 || Name and Fitness activity from 730 Sage Street

This activity is a hit with all ages!  Be creative!  You can also use this with spelling lists and other important words you want your kids to learn to spell.  Educational and good for healthy bodies, this activity really a win-win.

2 || ABCs of Movement  

These cards correspond to each letter of the alphabet and target a huge array of developmental skills and are perfect for any age.

3 || Don’t Drop the Cookies  

Tools to Grow features this fun game that helps children improve their fine motor coordination, upper extremity control, motor planning, visual perception, and early math skills.

4 || Moving and Learning on the Balance Beam  

Use a balance beam or make one out of found objects then use it to teach number recognition and sequencing as well as directional terms like forward and backward.

5 || Rhyming Reindeer  

Can you spy a great language activity from miles away?  We can!  This one works on positional concept terms, receptive identification of body parts, colors, pictures, objects, phonological awareness (rhyming), fine motor skills, visual perceptual skills, and cognitive skills.  Whew!  Who knew you could get so much out of moving to learn!  Tuck this one away for the holiday season!

6 || Special Delivery  

We did this activity with a Valentine’s Day theme, but you could substitute the hearts and pink paper with Christmas trees cut out of holiday-themed paper, or you could make the cutouts look like letters in envelopes for a fun “mailman” activity with preschoolers during a Community Helpers unit.

7 || I Spy with a Twist

“I spy something that begins with the letter A”!  A classic game that every kid loves that can be changed up a bit to target all kinds of academic and preacademic skills.  Add a movement component like “skip to the letter A and show me where it is” and you’ve got a double whammy!!

8 || Personalized Caterpillars

This fun little name craft for kids can be played with again and again so kids can get some repetition along with a great fine motor strengthening boost!  Once you make the craft, place clothespins on either side of a balance beam and have kids squat or bend while balancing to retrieve them and complete their caterpillar!

9 || Spell Your Name Hopscotch

This Spell Your Name Hopscotch Game  is designed to help them learn how to spell their names through movement by playing a hopscotch-like activity!

10 || Alphabet Yoga  

Learning the alphabet doesn’t have to be boring!  Try this alphabet yoga activity to get kids moving and learning .

11 || Giant Alphabet

Find a vertical surface  and get kids moving up and down to create giant letters with window markers, chalk or paint!

12 || Sight Word Mix-up

Combine reading sight words with various movements and students will have tons of fun while being physically active.

13 || Learning Numbers at the Beach

Just say the word beach and I can think of a million ways to get kids moving and learning.  This activity couples homemade dice with movement in a follow the leader style game.

14 || Fun Ways to Teach a Child Their Phone Number

These 3 fun ideas are a great way for teaching kids their phone numbers through movement. Working with manipulatives during hands on activities creates an awesome mind-body connection to solidify learning and memory.

15 || Shapes Yoga

A very cool series of yoga poses to get your child to recognize shapes through body movements.

16 || Move and Groove Letter Game

This is a super simple alphabet game that gets kids moving and grooving while they learn their letters.

17 || Build with Letters

Blocks and tape are all you need for this fun word building, letter recognition activity!

18 || Find and Rhyme Gross Motor Game

You could adapt this easily for different levels using upper and lowercase as pairs to match, sight words or word families in addition to the rhyming word game!

19 || Letters on the Go

An awesome idea for working on letter recognition, this fun activity keeps hands busy .  The simpleness of this activity makes it easily adjustable for all ages and levels.

20 || Word Family Slam

I think every child will love this idea for finding word families – ready, aim, fire!

21 || Twister with Blends

Turn an old Twister game into a learning experience full of balance and flexibility challenges that your kids won’t forget!

If your kids like to dance, hop, skip, crawl, move and play then this reading/sight word game is for them!

10 Reading Strategies to Grow Kindergarten Literacy Skills

It’s such a thrill to see a kindergarten child’s excitement as they read their very first words and sentences. This process comes easily for some children, while others find it more of a challenge. It’s helpful to have a toolbox of reading strategies for kindergarten students at your fingertips , so you can help kids of all abilities build their skills. 

This collection of kindergarten reading strategies includes ideas for teaching the mechanics of words, like phonics and decoding . You’ll also find tips for encouraging reading comprehension, making sure kids truly understand what they’re reading. Use a mix of these strategies to help your child become a more fluent, confident reader. 

1. Master Letter Recognition and Sounds

Before a child starts to read words, they must be completely comfortable with all of the letters in the alphabet and letter sounds, including these skills:

Phonemic Awareness: Understand that the sounds in words are represented by letters or combinations of letters

Letter Recognition: Recognize the letters on sight and be able to say their names

Letter Sounds One-to-One Correspondence: Be able to say the sound or sounds each letter of the alphabet makes

When children struggle with early reading, it’s often because they haven’t fully mastered these key skills. Focus your attention there first, before jumping ahead to reading words. These letter sound activities for young children are a terrific place to start.

2. Introduce Beginning Phonics

Today’s phonics instruction is the result of decades of research into the science of reading. Phonics essentially teaches kids to match the letters in a word with the sounds they stand for , following a specific set of rules. These rules make our sometimes complicated language easier to read, using a process called decoding (the technical term for “sounding out a word”). 

For kindergarteners, that usually means reading simple words where each letter is pronounced using its associated sound, without needing to worry about trickier combinations of letters (like /sh/ or /ou/). We teach kids to break words down into their individual sounds, then run them together to pronounce the whole word. 3. Add in High Frequency and Sight Words

You might be surprised to learn that only 100 English words make up as much as 50 to 60 percent of all written texts . That means it’s more helpful for new readers to focus on those top words, known as “high frequency words.”

There are several theories about how to best teach high frequency words to kids. For a long time, reading programs have focused on just memorizing the words by sight. These are usually broken into lists by grade level and used as spelling words. You can also teach them using fun hands-on activities, like the ones found here . Further enhance your child’s practice with high frequency words by reviewing sight words lists and playing games like sight word Bingo .

Newer reading theories suggest it’s better to teach regularly-spelled high frequency words as part of phonics instruction, avoiding the need to memorize whenever possible. Find out more about teaching high frequency words here .

4. Learn About Word Families

In phonics, word families are those that have the same ending sounds , such as cat, hat, and rat. Recognizing a word family makes it much easier to decode new words. Imagine a child already knows how to pronounce “cat.” When they encounter the word “rat” for the first time, they can see that it ends with the same letters and likely the same sound, so they only need to sound out the first letter, /r/.  

The terrific thing about word families is that they rhyme! That makes learning them fun , as kids can create their own poems and songs with these words. It’s also entertaining to hold contests to see who can come up with the most words that rhyme with a specific starter word, like “man.” (Ban, can, fan, pan). 5. Look for Context Clues

Readers use context to help them understand words they don’t recognize. For kindergarten, that often means looking at the pictures in their books . If your child is struggling to decode a word, invite them to look at the pictures on the page to see if they find any clues to help them along.

You can also use context clues to build vocabulary when reading aloud to your child . If you come across a word they don’t know the meaning of, explore the pictures and the rest of the sentence or paragraph, together to see if they can figure out the definition. 

6. Predict the Action and Discuss Characters

Pictures can also help kids predict what might happen in a story. As you read books together, stop along the way and ask them what they think might happen next . Consider what you’ve already read, and go back to look at previous pictures for clues.

Take time to talk about the characters too. Ask your child to describe them, and ask why they think a character did or said something. Discuss whether they like or dislike any of the characters, and why, and if they relate to any of them in particular.

7. Retell and Sequence Stories

Another important way to measure comprehension is to ask your child to retell a story you’ve just read . They should be able to repeat the main plot points of the story, and tell them in the right order (known as sequencing). Try these activities:

• Story Panels : Give your child three (or a few more) pieces of paper and ask them to illustrate scenes from the story you just read. Then, have them put those scenes in order, and use them to retell the story.
• Act It Out : Using stuffed animals or other toys, or just their own dramatic selves, encourage kids to act out the story from start to finish.
• Put It In Order: Together, write out a list of things that happened in the story, in no particular order. Put each of these events on a separate card, then have your child help you put them in the proper order.

8. Choose Skill-Appropriate Books

When you’re reading aloud to your child, you can explore all kinds of books (more on that below). But when you’re choosing books for them to read on their own, you want to maximize their potential to succeed while pushing them just slightly out of their comfort zone . That way they’ll learn, but not be so frustrated that they give up.

Many people use the “five-finger rule.” As your child reads, have them hold up one finger for each word they can’t decode, recognize on sight, or determine from context clues.

• 0-1 Fingers Per Page: This book might be a little too easy.
• 2-3 Fingers Per Page: Perfect! Hard enough to challenge them but not frustrate them.
• 4-5 Fingers Per Page: This one might be a bit too hard, causing kids to give up.

9. Read Together Every Day

When kids are young, you have the chance to foster a love of reading that will benefit them their whole life long. Set aside daily reading time , which should include both time for your child to practice their own reading skills, and time for adults to read aloud to kids. Read-alouds give adults the chance to model what fluent reading sounds like , as you give expression and excitement to the story.

This is the time to expose your child to a wide range of topics and types of books . Be sure to read both fiction and non-fiction, in genres like mystery, poetry, and historical fiction. Seek out books with diverse characters, cultures, and settings, so your child is exposed to new ideas each day. Let kids choose their own books, too, and try not to judge what they pick. The most important thing is that kids read, read, read every chance they get.

Teaching About the Environment

Explore Your Environment: K-8 Activity Guide offers educators a wide variety of engaging, hands-on activities, organized into grade bands: K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. Many activities also suggest variations for doing the activity with a different grade level or audience.

Topics include trees and forests, wildlife, water, air, energy, waste, climate change, invasive species, community planning, and more. The activities encompass the economic, ecological, and social aspects of environmental issues and are designed to help students learn how to think, not what to think.

The activities are suitable for use in formal classrooms and nonformal settings and several are particularly suited to exploring urban environments. Most activities are designed to take one or two 50-minute periods of instruction.

PLT activities are designed to be easy to use. Each activity contains all the information needed to teach the core lesson, including background information, preparation instructions, materials and time requirements, step-by-step instructions, student pages, assessment suggestions, and suggestions for extending the lesson.

Taking students outdoors to make observations or collect data is the core of many lessons and while there are lessons for both indoors and outdoors, all activities offer ways to “Take It Outside!” to extend student learning. In addition, many suggest service-learning opportunities that take students into their community.

Through these interactive (and fun) in-person or virtual workshops, participants practice how to use PLT materials while also gaining insights from the facilitator and each other related to content and teaching strategies.

Hands-on Learning

PLT activities are hands-on and investigation-based, making learning fun while also building skills, stimulating knowledge gains, and actively engaging students. They afford students the opportunity to learn through real experiences, rather than just reading or hearing about them.

Children discover why leaves turn yellow in the fall. They learn how seeds travel through the wind and grow in the soil where they land. They look underneath leaves, stones, and rotting logs for evidence of decomposers. They create nature journals, develop their creative writing skills, craft stories from their observations. They “adopt” a tree and learn about that species and watch how it changes through the seasons.

They pretend to be trees and gather the nutrients they need for them to survive, collecting different colored squares for each element. They learn to “read” a cross section of a tree to see how old it is through the number of rings and what happened in each year. They learn to focus and observe using their five senses. They map out sounds they hear, they collect data and build bar graphs, comparing different elements in nature they find.

Well-tested Teaching Strategies

All PLT activities have been thoroughly field-tested by educators working with students in the classroom and in nonformal settings. In addition to inquiry-based instruction and outdoor teaching and learning, PLT activities employ differentiated instruction strategies, career connections, STEM skills building, and authentic assessment.

For example, each activity suggests effective strategies for students to apply and demonstrate what they learned from the activity. A Career Corner is included with every student worksheet to introduce youth to related green careers. Every activity incorporates at least some elements of STEM and lists relevant STEM skills. Some activities are denoted as STEM exemplars.

Activities can be used as individual, stand-alone lessons, or several activities can be linked together into a unit of instruction using a storyline technique. Storylines suggested in the guide support learning progressions that hold areas of knowledge and skills together.

DIY Cardboard Emotions Face  – Use cardboard to cut out images of a face and attach them with brass fastners to make this interchangeable emotion face. Students can easily change the facial features to express their feelings or mood.

Make Worry Dolls  – This craft goes along with the book “Silly Billy” and serves a purpose to lessen the worries of children. By wrapping craft pegs with thread, you can make your own worry dolls. Silly Billy offers a practical solution for children who worry from the South American tradition where children share their worries by making worry dolls.

DIY Emotions Book  –  Take photos of students making emotion faces, print them out, and paste theme in a  blank board book  to create a full emotions book. This is sure to be a fun hit for students as they see each other’s faces and talk about their emotions.

Emotion Face (Printable)   – Cut out the face picture and attach velcro near the eyes and mouth space. Cut out each image of different eyes and mouths. Have students mix and match eyes and mouth to create different emotion faces and describe what it looks like to them.

Emotions Slider (Printable)  – Students can color each part of the face before inserting the pull tab through to be able to change the eyes and the face. Slide the tab to create different feelings faces. Younger learners may require assistance in this final step of assembly.

Five Senses Mobile (Printable)  – Students draw something that they use that sense to experience (eg I see a butterfly) on each circle, colour the pictures and then put the mobile together.

Emotions Wheel  – Divide a paper plate into four sections and have children color and label each section (for example, green for happy, red for mad, blue for sad, and yellow for excited). Encourage children to choose the emotion they are feeling that day and talk about it. You can keep these in an easily accessible area of the classroom for children to use each day.

Toilet Paper Roll People  – Little ones love these cute little toilet paper roll people. Glue googly eyes and make a simple face with a marker to teach the various emotions.

Five Senses Magazine Craft  – Have students use construction paper and magazines to create this five senses craft. Tell them to cut out the body parts that go with each sense and then cut out another item that they would use this sense for. You can also have them use one whole sheet for each sense and have them paste lots of items that they can see, smell, taste, touch, or hear.

Five Senses Puppet Sticks (Printable)  – Simply print these body parts on card stock, color them, and attach them to popsticle sticks. Have students use these sticks as you’re reading a story or simply talking about something that would use one of the senses and raise it up when they hear it.

Literacy Activities for Five Senses and Emotions Preschool Theme

Activities focused on emotions and the five senses provide an exciting avenue for preschoolers to develop their literacy skills. Whether through sensory-based storytelling, emotion word strips, or interactive worksheets, there’s something for every child to enjoy!

By incorporating activities that connect feelings to words, like matching emotions to facial expressions or using sensory experiences to describe objects, preschoolers can enhance their vocabulary and comprehension. These hands-on, engaging activities not only build literacy skills but also help young learners understand how to express their emotions and describe the world around them using their five senses.

Five Senses Easy Reader (Printable)  – This Booklet helps students practice their penmanship/spelling while also teaching about the five senses. Students trace the sense words, color the picture, and read the sentences along with it.

Five Senses Word Wall Cards (Printable)  – Use these word wall cards to hang in your classroom so students can see and read five sense words, their verbs, and body parts.

Labeling Super Senses (Printable)  – Use these worksheets for students to identify the senses in the picture (either body parts or actions) and copy the words below.

Senses Interactive Book (Printable) –  Use these pages for students to color and read about the senses, specifically the “seeing” sense. Put together these small books about how many senses do we have, what the five senses help you do, and what you can see with your eyes.

Emotions Letter Match (Printable)  –  Simply cut on the lines and have students match the upper and lowercase letters to complete the picture.

Fine and Visual Motor Activities for Emotions and Five Senses Preschool Theme

DIY Emotion Dot Stickers  – Draw faces of different emotions on dot stickers and have child peel off the sticker and place on a paper. You can buy emoji stickers, but if you have dot stickers laying around, here is an easy way to make them yourself. Peeling stickers is a great way to practice pincer grasp for young children.

Draw Emotion Faces (Printable)  – This packet includes several blank faces and words to describe what emotion to draw. Have students draw the eyes, nose, and mouth that would represent that emotion. Laminate and use dry erase markers to use over and over!

How I Feel Today Sheet (Printable)  – Have students color in the face that most represents how they are feeling that day. This can also be used as just a coloring sheet for younger children to color all the faces at once,

Smelling Match Worksheet (Printable)  – Have students color the picture of the nose and other images. Then, Draw a line from the nose to which images use the smelling sense.

Five Sense Sorting (Printable)  – Have students use their fine motor skills to cut out each picture. Then, have them match and paste it in the correct box depending on the sense they would use.

Five Senses Mazes (Printable)  – Work on fine and visual motor skills with these mazes while learning the five senses.

Five Sense and Apples (Printable)  – Describe apples using your five senses (hearing, sight, smell, touch, and taste). Comes with a mini set of posters for the common adjectives to describe apples. Students will copy the word for each sense of how their apple feels, tastes, smells, sounds, and looks.

Color the Color Monster (Printable)  – This activity goes along with the fun book, “The Color Monster.” Have students color what emotion they are feeling on the monster as they relate colors to emotions.

MegaBlocks Emotion Faces  – Draw eyes, noses, and mouths on several Megablocks to create different emotions. Have students match up eyes, noses, and mouths to create different faces.

Five Senses Cutting and Tracing Strips (Printable) –  Cut on thick black line to separate each strip. Have students use a scissor to cut on the line from one end to the other. Horizontal pages can be used for tracing with a pencil or crayon on each dotted line.

Songs about emotions and the five senses are a fun and engaging way to introduce preschoolers to the world of feelings and sensory experiences.

Through catchy melodies and playful lyrics, these songs capture children’s attention and make learning about emotions and how we experience the world through our senses an enjoyable experience.

Singing about emotions helps children improve their memory, language skills, and rhythm, while also fostering a love for music. By incorporating senses like sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell into the lyrics, children can better understand how these sensations connect to their emotions, making the learning process both fun and meaningful!

Sensory Activities for Emotions and Five Senses Preschool Theme

Sensory activities are a fun and engaging way to introduce preschoolers to the world of their five senses!

Through hands-on exploration, children can experience different textures, sounds, smells, and visuals, helping them to understand how their senses connect them to the world around them. From squishy sensory bins to sound jars and textured art, these activities provide endless opportunities for discovery.

Sensory play not only stimulates young minds but also helps improve fine motor skills, language development, and cognitive growth. By engaging in sensory activities, preschoolers can learn to express how they feel about different sensations while enhancing their creativity and problem-solving skills.

Explore Vision with  Mirror, Mirror  –  This is a great activity for learning about both emotions and the five senses. Place a mirror in front of your child and say different feelings and they have to make the face that represents that feeling. You can show them pictures of it and they have to copy it if needed. For the senses, have them point out the different facial features that provide each sense. Ie. What do you use to hear? To see? To taste? etc.

Emoji Play Dough Mat (Printable)  – Feelings and Emotions play dough mats are a fun activity to teach and build your student’s emotional vocabulary and social skills. Have them roll, stretch, and pinch play dough to form the emoji faces.

Food Faces  – Start looking at food differently and have fun creating food faces. Almost all fruit and vegtables can be converted into faces. Carrot hair, tomato eyes, pieces of lunch meat for the face. Set up an assembly line and ask your kids to help make a face. Asking them to help make the food, will make them more likely to at least try it.

Emotion Sensory Bottles   – We all know kids love sensory bottles. These just have emotion stickers on them to make faces to make it more fun for your students. All you need to use are empty plastic bottles, glitter, clear glue, and water to make the sensory bottles and emotion stickers to attach.

Explore Texture with Texture People  –  Make a textured collage by cutting shapes from a range of textured paper, fabric and recyclables – for example, sandpaper for rough, corrugated cardboard or bubble wrap for bumpy, cotton wool or faux fur for soft, cellophane or silk for smooth and alfoil for crinkly.

Explore Sound with Noisy/Quiet Sensory Bin   – Have students place items in a container (bowl, bottle, Easter egg, etc.) and shake it to see if the item is quiet or noisy. First model for them what to do. Use items such as tissue paper, card stock paper, straw, foam numbers, tin foil, wax paper, pom pom ball, sticker, and pipe cleaners (quiet). And coins, buttons, earrings, cars, erasers, whistle, plastic letters, metal cookie cutter, and pebbles (noisy).

Explore Texture with Leaf Rubbing  – Send your students outdoors on a leaf hunt with unwrapped crayons and paper. Have them take rubbings from each leaf they find . Once back inside, add color and interest to your rubbings by painting over them with liquid watercolors or food coloring.

Explore Taste –   Set up a muffin tin with various foods ranging from tastes like sweet, salty, spicy, sour, bitter, etc. Have students take turns trying each food and trying to compare it by describing the taste. For younger ones, they can just learn that the taste sense lets us explore foods with our mouth/tongue.

Explore Smell  – Set out some household items that have a strong smell. For example, spices, vinegar, lemon, air freshener, cookies, cleaners, etc. You can dab a bit on a cotton ball as to not give students a whole bottle. Have them smell these items and ask what body part they use to smell and if they like it or not.

Explore Sight with a Blindfold  – Children see things all around them and might not be able to understand how or why they see. By placing a blindfold on them and telling them to look at the toy or look at the wall, they will realize how they see with their eyes.

Gross Motor Activities for Emotions and Five Senses Theme

Feelings Catch  – Toss the ball to a child. When he catches it have him identify the feeling face under one of his hands. He can also share a time when he experienced that feeling. It’s a simple and fun way to teach kids about feelings.

Feelings Ball Toss Sort –  Use bowls and label them with images of different emotions. For younger students, have them toss a ball into the bowl when you state the emotion. For older students, you can give them a  scenario card  and have them decide which emotion they would feel.

Bubble Wrap Bounce  –  Use a roll of bubble wrap & roll it out on the floor. Have students bounce, run up and down, roll around on it and try to pop the bubbles. Play a fun “Bounce Song” as well as they bop and bop. He seriously played with it all week long! I eventually tapped it down with masking tape so it wouldn’t bunch up.

Sensory Walk  –  Place a variety of sensory materials in separate trays. This can include Water (in various temps), Sand, Flour, Rice, Grass, Sticks, Pom Poms, Shaving cream, Water beads, Yarn, Leaves, Rocks, Bubble wrap, and so much more! Use anything you have accessible. Then have students run or walk through each bin and talk about what they felt.

Blind Man’s Bluff – The player who is “It” wears a blindfold. While he or she turns around in place five times, all the other players hide. When “It” finishes the fifth rotation, he or she yells, “Stop,” and all the other players must freeze in place. “It” then begins to search for the other players by yelling “blind man’s . . .” All other players must yell “bluff,” although they can disguise their voices. The searcher uses vocal clues to track down the other players.

Matching, Sorting, and Sequencing Activities for Emotions and Five Senses Theme

Learning to sort objects in various ways helps your child develop essential cognitive skills like recognizing and creating patterns, thinking logically, and organizing items by order or sequence.

Sorting and sequencing activities also support children in everyday tasks, such as cleaning up or following routines. Why not make it fun while being educational by exploring emotions and the five senses? Sorting objects by texture, color, or sound not only helps with these skills but also encourages children to explore how their senses work together. This playful, sensory-based learning can foster curiosity and creativity while strengthening important life skills.

Emotion Eggs  – Draw eyes and mouths on different sides of plastic Easter eggs. You can break and mix them up to create a whole lot of new and interesting emotions. They will see how much a face can change just by the shape of the eyes or position of the mouth.

Emotion Cards (Printable)  –  Use picture cards to play a game by matching emotions. Print two sets & lay them face down and have students turn over 2 at a time to find a match and describe what emotion they see. You can also pull out a card one at a time and have students say what the emotion is. For older kids, show them an emotion card and have them explain a situation in which someone may have this feeling or have them tell how they are feeling by showing you a card instead of using words.

Five Senses Sorting (Printable)  – Have students color and cut out the objects and place them in the row for which sense they belong to.

Emotions Matching (Printable)  – Have students match the emotion faces to one another as they learn what certain faces mean. For younger children, just match the face to the same face, for older ones who can start reading, they can match the emotion word to the face.

Emotion Photo Sort  – Print out images of different people showing various emotions. Make a pocket folder with a happy face, sad face, etc. Have students sort the emotions into their proper category.

Mathematics Activities for Emotions and Five Senses Theme

Mathematics activities are a great way to introduce preschoolers to numbers and problem-solving through hands-on, sensory-based learning!

By incorporating counting, measuring, and sorting into fun, interactive activities, children can develop their early math skills while also exploring their five senses. For example, they can count objects based on texture, measure ingredients while cooking, or sort items by size or color.

These sensory-rich math activities not only build foundational math skills but also enhance their ability to observe, compare, and make sense of the world around them. By connecting math to everyday experiences and sensations, children can develop a deeper understanding of numbers, patterns, and spatial awareness—all while having fun!

Feeling Shapes Game  (Printable) –  For this game, you’ll just need tangrams and a paper bag. Place all the cut out feelings shapes in the bag and have students pick out one at a time. Then, have them find the matching shape in a tangram and trace that tangram on a sheet of paper. Make sure they say the name of the feeling and the shape. Don’t have tangrams? Just laminate the paper shapes and have them trace those.

I Spy Counting Emotions (Printable)  –  Use this activity to have students count the number of emotion faces. They can also color in the picture with the correct color and then count them and write the number.

Emoji Roll and Cover (Printable)   – Simply have students roll a dice and cover the corresponding number of emoji faces on the sheet.

Five Senses Number Mats (Printable)-  Each page focuses on one number. First, identify the number at the top left corner. Follow the instructions to build the 10 frame with counters to show that number, trace, write, add, circle, and then use counters again to count and cover the number of items at the bottom. All you need are some math link counting cubes, or any other colored manipulative for that matter, such as pom poms, counting bears, beads, etc.

Emotion Patterns (Printable)   – Cut out squares of emotion-themed images. Have student make their own patterns, or start patterns for them and have them complete it. There is also a grid available to make it easier for students to see how many spots are left.

Books to Read Aloud for Emotions and Five Senses Theme

Reading books about emotions and the five senses aloud is a delightful way to introduce preschoolers to understanding their feelings and how they experience the world around them. These books captivate young minds with engaging stories, vibrant illustrations, and fascinating facts about how our senses work and how emotions shape our reactions.

By exploring characters’ feelings and sensory experiences through storytelling, children can better understand their own emotions and the role their senses play in daily life. Reading aloud also promotes language development and emotional awareness, all while making learning fun and interactive!

“Silly Billy” by Anthony Browne  – Billy is a bit of a worrier. He worries about hats and shoes. Most of all, he worries about staying at other people’s houses. His mum and dad try to help, but still Billy worries…until a visit to his grandma’s shows him how to overcome his fears with the aid of his imagination – and some tiny worry dolls.

“In My Heart” by Jo Witek  – This is one of the cutest books about feelings! Preschoolers learn that their heart is like a house with all their feelings living inside. It has a die-cut heart on each page as the book takes your child on a journey through their emotions.

The Color Monster – A Story About Emotions” by Anna Llenas – One day, Color Monster wakes up with his emotions are all over the place. He learns what each feeling means through color. As he learns to sort and define his mixed-up emotions, he gains self-awareness & peace.

“The Magic School Bus Explores the Senses” by Joanna Cole  – On a most sense-sational trip that takes them through an eye, an ear, a tongue, and even a dog’s nose, Ms. Frizzle’s class learns about the senses. Using their trademark sense of humor, the author provides facts about the senses in both the human and animal worlds.

“My Magical Feelings” by Becky Cummings  – Feelings are the language of the soul. That’s why it’s important to encourage our children to express themselves. This book helps explain feelings and emotions to young kids.

“Look, Listen, Taste, Touch, and Smell: Learning About Your Five Senses” by Pamela Neddleton   – An introduction to the five senses and the organs that perform the functions of sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch.

“My Five Senses” by Aliki  – Sight, smell, taste, hearing, and touch—our five senses teach us about our world. This engaging text and colorful artwork shows young readers how they use their senses to smell a rose or play with a puppy.

“The Feelings Book” by Todd Parr – The Feelings Book illustrates the wide range of moods and emotions. The author pays special attention to the ever-changing, nonsensical emotions that we all feel. Discussions and Graphing Activities for Five Senses and Emotions Preschool Theme

Discussions and graphing activities focused on emotions and the five senses offer a structured yet exciting way for preschoolers to explore everyday experiences and sensations, as well as emotions they may not yet fully understand.

By engaging in discussions, children develop their language skills, learn to articulate their thoughts, and build a deeper understanding of how they feel in different situations. These conversations can help them recognize how certain sights, sounds, smells, and textures make them feel, while graphing activities allow them to visually track their favorite sensations or emotions. Discuss Emotions and Feelings (Poster Printable)  –  Bring about emotional awareness & talk about the names of each emotion, how can we tell if someone/themselves is feeling this way, and what situations can cause these feelings. Use a poster for students to point out their feelings.

Discuss Managing Emotions (Printable) –  After teaching what emotions are, make sure students know how to manage and deal with these emotions. Hang up this printable poster in your classroom to go over simple ways to deal with strong feelings.

Create an anchor chart and have students daily check off or mark a tally on their emotion that day.

From enhancing fine motor skills and literacy to sparking curiosity in science and math, these activities provide endless opportunities for young learners to grow and discover.

Why naeyc has updated the ethics position statements.

In May 2011, the NAEYC Governing Board reaffirmed the 2005 Code and updated this position statement to reflect consistency with the “Supplement for Early Childhood Program Administrators,” which was initially approved in July 2006. Specifically, Section III-C of the Code (Ethical Responsibilities to Colleagues / Responsibilities to Employees) was deleted, as these Ideals and Principles are addressed in the Supplement. Other minor modifications were also made to ensure clarity and consistency. In addition, changes were made to Ideals and Principles that regard responsibilities to families to ensure alignment with current family engagement best practices in the field.

The “Supplement for Early Childhood Program Administrators” was also reaffirmed by the NAEYC Governing Board in May 2011, and changes were made to Ideals and Principles that regard responsibilities to families to ensure alignment with current family engagement best practices in the field. In addition, references to the Code of Ethical Conduct, Section III, Part C: Responsibilities to Employees were deleted, as Section III, Part C was deleted in the May 2011 update of the Code.

Anxiety, making new friends, learning to share: These nine titles will prepare young readers for whatever their first day of school may have in store.

Travis Jonker is a children’s book author and illustrator, and the librarian at Dorr Elementary in Michigan. He has experienced nearly 40 first days of school.

The first day of school is a shared experience so potent, many grown-ups — including this one — still have weird dreams about it decades later (who says the monoculture is dead?). The joys and anxieties of this rite of passage are fertile ground for storytelling, which has led to a lot of excellent books on the topic. But while the first-day experience is about as ubiquitous as they come, how children navigate the milestone is as varied as the colors in that gigantic Crayola box that we all coveted in kindergarten. These are a few of my favorite back-to-school books for children as they start their K-12 journey.

Never, Not Ever!

While some kids are excited to enter the hallowed halls of kindergarten, do not underestimate the willpower of a child who absolutely does not want to go to school. Pascaline, a 5-year-old bat, is so determined to avoid the classroom that, by the sheer force of her defiance, she accidentally shrinks her mom and dad — and then realizes that her peanut-sized parents can provide some much-needed company as she heads off into the unknown. As Pascaline’s confidence is buoyed by her secret companions, her parents come to understand that a day at school isn’t quite as easy as they thought. Alemagna’s rich, playful art further highlights the wit of the text.

Shy Robin and the First Day of School

Even the smallest gesture of kindness can transform an anxiety-filled first day into a hopeful new beginning. Robin the hippo is feeling some major first-day-of-school nerves, which she attempts to assuage with a security item: a purple headband with a bow. When her headband goes missing, things begin to go downhill, until her classmate Marco steps up and shares his own humble comfort talisman: a purple bracelet that plants the seed of a blossoming friendship.
