8 Exciting Creative Writing Courses In Perth

Davo Nguyen

Looking to take your creative writing skills to the next level. Perth has amazing creative writing courses year-round, and we’re sharing them with you! If you’re looking to be a part of one of the most in-demand creative industries or really just brush up your written communication skills, some of these courses are the best options for you.

Have you always wanted to write a fiction series, or wanted to write your own autobiography? Do you like writing about topics like foreign languages, travel, beauty therapy, graphic design, interior design, business, commercial cookery, the music industry, mental health, visual arts, metal fabrication, construction, engineering, disability services, speech building, cyber security, information technology, or anything under the sun?

What ever topic you love to write about, you’re not alone. Many people share the same aspiration, but are either intimidated by the whole idea of it or don’t know where to start.

The good news is you don’t need to be an advanced diploma to become a writer. In this article we will show you that it is indeed to achieve your writing goals, with the right writing courses.

The writing courses selected in our article are all short courses. We chose to do so on purpose. We had a hunch that the vast majority reading this article would be people with busy day jobs. For such people, a short course is more sustainable than a full-on degree!

The study method for the courses below is varied and the best option for you will vary based on your current skill set. Some follow the online course format of class delivery where you have to fulfill an online course content. Others are physical courses, where you have to attend current classes at a specific location agreed upon earlier. We recommend these, especially for international students. It’s a great way to meet new people and to really get a feel for the city! On the same note, the courses with physical locations are located not just in Perth city, but in East Perth and other parts of western Australia.

So if you want to be a professional writer, some of these amazing programs will help you improve your writing skills so you can be ready for better career opportunities.

With that out of the way, here are the eight most exciting creative writing workshops in Perth! Take a look.

“I have loved every minute of this course, I didn’t want it to end. I loved reading other’s writing, writing feedback and receiving feedback. I feel I have got to know people and their stories, such a treasure chest of stories. I sincerely recommend this course to anyone.” Margaret, August

“One of the greatest characteristics of the course is the amount of support you receive, not just from your instructor but from every other writer taking the course.” Robert, February

“You saw time and time again, the Writers’ Studio lived up to their mission – ” … a team of passionate, experienced and dedicated tutors will guide you through the writing journey every step of the way.” Marie, May

“This course was so well thought out and very carefully planned. It was a really tight module. I was surprised at how quickly our little online community bonded.” Louise, February

“I work as a TV drama scriptwriter and editor for a living … and in the past, I have also run creative writing courses for high school students, so I was curious to see how this course would be structured, and I have to say I was mightily impressed. The way the course built from week to week was excellent. And the design of the “Writers’ Board” where everyone could share and give feedback (with additional insight from the tutor) was brilliant.” Elizabeth, February

“… My fellow writers and I leave feedback on each other’s pieces. I can’t place a value on the experience of receiving feedback on my writing. Giving feedback has changed my writing for the better. I feel like writing is within my reach – I’ve picked up tools that will help me and serve me in my journey.” Lisa, May

“… I have thoroughly enjoyed the process, the freedom, the encouragement and pleasure that comes from “publishing” your work and having supportive, constructive feedback. It has been a great, validating experience …” Nella, August

“This course has been the single best investment in myself I have yet made … For me, this course has delivered 100% on the website’s claim, “If your dream is to write, our courses will get you doing it.” Matt, May

“Amazed at how much I learnt from the constructive reviews that I received with every piece of writing.” Nicole, May

“Who would have thought, it completely changed my life. Now all my previous attempts of writing seem to me childish as   my skills have improved so much.” Anastasia, May

“I learned so many incredibly useful techniques.” Shannon, May

Creative writing study FAQs

A creative writing course teaches you how to approach different styles of writing, like fiction, short fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction. You will be encouraged to share your work so it can be critiqued by others, which helps you develop your skills to a publishable standard.

Creative writing courses are both inspiring and practical. You’re given the space to experiment with your own ideas, but you also learn writing for different genres, platforms and formats.

Depending on your course, you’ll learn how to:

  • kickstart your creativity
  • develop a distinctive writing style
  • think critically about work produced by other writers
  • write across areas like short fiction, long-form fiction, genre fiction, poetry and children’s fiction
  • act on feedback and edit your own work
  • deliver critical feedback during virtual workshop discussions
  • submit your work for publication
  • navigate the Australian publishing industry.

There are countless reasons to study creative writing. Enrol if you want to develop your craft, write professionally, or inspire yourself artistically. You’ll have the space to work on projects that matter to you, which could lead to a publishable story, collection or manuscript that you might not have finished otherwise.

You’ll gain incredibly valuable knowledge about the path to publication from people who’ve been there. And you’ll network with like-minded creatives from all over the country. These connections often end up being the writers, editors and publishers you collaborate with in your career.

It’s not uncommon to juggle your creative projects with other work. Studying online gives you the time and flexibility to do that. Plus, you’re not restricted by location—you can access universities from across Australia. This has its advantages. It means you can choose your course based on the writing teachers who appeal to you most.

There are a lot of reasons to study your course online through us.

  • You can enrol without entry requirements  We have a unique open-door policy  that makes it possible for everyone to enrol in university study, no matter their academic history. If you don’t meet the entry requirements for a degree, we’ll help you get in through single undergraduate subjects and transition into a qualification from there.
  • You have total control over how you study Upskill without committing to a whole degree upfront. Or enrol in a full degree, but take it a subject at a time. We’ll introduce you to flexible study options you didn’t even know about, so you can fit uni around what matters to you.
  • You’ll graduate with the same qualification as an on-campus student Once you enrol through us, you’ll study online with the university that provides your degree. This means that when you complete your qualification, you’ll graduate with the same degree as on-campus students.
  • We’ll help you navigate the university world Our friendly student advisors will be your guide every step of the enrolment journey. They'll help you compare universities, choose a course, provide documentation and understand your finance options.

It depends on the course and whether you choose something short or long-term. Here’s a general guide:

Single subject10-18 weeks
Short course10-18 weeks
Undergraduate certificate6 months (if full time)
Diploma1 year (if full time)
Associate degree2 years (if full time)
Bachelor degree3 years (if full time)
Graduate certificate6 months (if full time)
Graduate diploma1 year (if full time)
Masters degree2 years (if full time)

If you study a degree in creative writing through Open Universities Australia, you have the flexibility to choose how many subjects you take per term. This means you can complete your qualification at a faster or slower pace than you would on campus.

Creative writing is a skill that requires practice and patience—but it’s a skill anyone can learn with the right guidance. Many of our students find workshopping to be the hardest thing about their course, because they can’t help taking the feedback about their work personally. It’s tricky to separate yourself from your writing, but your tutors and peers only have your development in mind. If you’re open to a bit of constructive criticism, you should find your course fun and rewardingly challenging.

Creative writing graduates have the critical thinking and writing skills to work across all sorts of industries. Students commonly pursue work as:

  • Journalists
  • Copywriters
  • Digital marketers
  • Magazine publishers and editors
  • Book publishers and editors
  • Screenwriters
  • Arts administrators

Before starting an enrolment, it’s important to read the entry requirements for your chosen course to ensure that you’re eligible to apply. If you don’t quite meet the requirements, we may be able to help you find a pathway into your course through open-entry subjects, which anyone can study.

Chat with us  to find out more.

Here at Open Universities Australia, we make enrolling online as straightforward as possible. To get started, find the course for you by browsing the options on this page. You can also compare different qualifications using our handy comparison tool , or request help from one of our student advisors.

When you’ve made your choice, click ‘Apply now’ on the relevant course page and follow the prompts to begin your enrolment. We’ll ask you to supply some supporting documentation, including proof of your identity, your tax file number, and a unique student identifier (USI)  during this process.

Your university will get in touch with you via email to confirm whether or not your application has been successful.

Please note that enquiries and applications for some courses are handled directly by the university. If this is the case, it will be indicated on the course listing page.

For more information about enrolment, read our online self-service enrolling instructions . If you get stuck at any time,  contact us  and we’ll talk you through it.

About the course.

This is a diverse and vibrant major that gives students the opportunity to tailor their learning according to their interests and career pathway, from creative writing and performance studies, to the rich history of the western literary tradition. Our units look at the rich history of the western literary tradition: Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf; writers who have done much to shape the way we live imaginatively in the world today. The major also offers units that look at the exciting ways in which literature works in the newly globalised world. Other important elements of the major are creative writing, where students produce their own creative work; screen and performance studies, which examine texts in media not confined to the written page; and the study of everyday life (gender, race, class) as it is mediated textually and imaginatively.

After he was introduced to Shakespeare by a teacher in year 6, James Evans fell in love with acting and went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts with a major in English and Linguistics at UWA in 1998. James is now the Associate Director of Bell Shakespeare, Australia’s national theatre company specialising in Shakespeare and the classics. James knew he would need a mix of theory and practice of Shakespeare for his future career so chose UWA for his studies. The great reputation for teaching and research in the UWA School of Humanities as well as the vibrant campus life was definitely an additional contributing factor.

Life on campus definitely lived up to what was promised for James. He was involved in the UDS - University Dramatic Society based at UWA and was president of the society in his final year. Some of the happiest memories of James’ life came from putting on shows in the Dolphin Theatre with what he calls ‘a bunch of creative misfits’ and is still good friends with many of them.

James is in his dream career, getting to live and breathe Shakespeare every day. He directs, acts and edits text for large-scale productions. He also regularly consults on educational programs, even writing and presenting an iPad App for kids called Starting Shakespeare that won ‘Best New App’ honours from Apple in 17 countries. James is directing a national tour of Julius Caesar for Bell Shakespeare heading to Perth in August.

A degree in arts and humanities from UWA gave James the ability to think critically, construct and clearly present his opinions and to listen and collaborate with others. These have been crucial skills for his career in the performing arts.

  • No additional time – Choosing two majors instead of one won’t add any additional time to your undergraduate degree. A standard bachelor degree consists of the same amount of units either way.
  • Discover what you want to do while you’re doing it – Not sure what career you want when you graduate? It’s very common for undergraduate students to be unsure. Choosing two majors in different areas will give you the opportunity to explore multiple interests and see what fits best. Majors can be switched until the end of your first year without adding any time onto your degree.

Unit Overview

This unit of study in the writer's craft aims to stimulate and guide students' creative writing, while considering the intersection between theory and practice inherent in writing as an act. It engages with key theoretical approaches to the discipline in order to understand the relationship between the writer and society, alerting students to contemporary literary forms, discourses and language. Students attend workshops and submit writing in the genre of their choice—poetry or fiction. Lectures and workshops consider a mixture of received literature and students' own works in order to understand the complex cultural and social discourses we inherently involve ourselves in when producing writing.
