Writing Workshops

The liwg writing workshops.

During a writing workshop, writers read their works-in-progress, and other members offer constructive critiquing. The writing workshops are an excellent forum for improving writing skills while enjoying the community of other motivated writers.

Workshop Format

creative writing classes long island

We have three key rules when we critique:

1) Whenever you are discussing writing you are addressing someone’s soul (or soul’s creation).  Therefore, respect it.

2) Each writer/member can read approximately six pages of his/her work, or for six minutes.

3) Listen/Look for the good (phrasing, imagery, dialogue) first, and learn.

The Presentation and Critiquing portion of the workshops offer writing lessons as each piece is discussed.

This workshop offered by  Creative Writing Long Island   (CWLI) is open to all writers of prose, beginner to advanced, in all genres and forms of fiction and nonfiction, including flash pieces, chapters, essays, short stories, letters and memoir.

The six-week workshop will run Saturday mornings in Massapequa, beginning in March from 10:00- 12:00, and the cost is $150 per student. Space is limited. To reserve, email  [email protected]

Student writing camp in the woods of Long island

Creative Writing Summer Camp Program on Long Island

Creative writing at Usdan takes full advantage of our proximity to New York writers to engage students in the forms of poetry, short fiction, and playwriting.

An Outdoor Creative Writing Summer Camp Experience

Whether their preferred form is poetry, drama, short fiction, the novel, or nonfiction, our young storytellers have the opportunity to practice their writing in small, collaborative groups. Working in peaceful, open-air studios, writers build imaginative narratives and find their creative voices, while experimenting with the core elements of storytelling, including style, structure, setting, point of view, conflict, and resolution.

Under the instruction of an experienced writing educator and practicing writer, students spend their days playing writing and word games, writing, revising, sharing, collaborating, and drawing inspiration from other art forms and Usdan’s campus. All sessions culminate with a student open mic and performance as well as the development of individual student portfolios. Creative Writing students learn in open-air studios with at least one side completely open and exposed to the beauty of Usdan’s surrounding woodland campus.

SUMMER CAMP BUSING FOR Long Island, NYC, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens Kids

For over fifty years, Usdan has offered an enriching arts , music ,  theater , creative writing and dance  summer camp experience to children all over the region, from Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn in New York City, to Port Washington and Huntington, and all over Nassau and Suffolk counties. Usdan offers busing to and from camp from convenient central pickup locations. Creative Writing: Playwriting - NEW

Creative writing: spoken word & poetry - new.

creative writing classes long island

Our open-air writing studios provide a welcoming environment for young storytellers to write poetry, short fiction, and plays, individually and in small collaborative groups. Use your imagination and find your creative voice, while learning concrete elements of storytelling such as structure, point of view, and conflict and resolution.

Creative Writing students collaborate with peers from other artistic disciplines and use the natural environment to inspire their writing. Writers also explore the forms in which creative writing shows up in everyday life (such as journaling) and in a variety of careers (such as writing commercials and plays).

Under the instruction of an experienced writing educator and practicing writer, students spend their days considering structure and form through word games, writing, revising, sharing, and collaborating. The session culminates in a student open mic and performance as well as the development of individual student portfolios. All levels are welcome. Classes are grouped according to age division and grade.

“It encouraged me to be more creative than I thought I could be.”  —Rina

“It's a writer's dream. My ideas couldn't flow until I went there. My favorite part was the way every student and the teacher supported each other.”  —Soleil

creative writing classes long island

In this playwriting class we will explore writing for the theater through practice and discussion. We will study the way words live on and off the page and come alive for others to experience. Writers will explore action, dialogue, and character development to deepen their understanding to playwriting. Students will examine contemporary playwrights and the plays going up at Usdan theater spaces 2024 for a cohesive outlook into the culture activating the voices of playwrights. Students will draft a short original play that will be presented at a live final reading.

There is nothing more essential than identity; that combination of personal, cultural, familial, and social values that gives each student a sense of self. In this class, poets will read and learn to appreciate the poets who really examined themselves through vulnerable, revelatory pieces of poetry as they investigate the art of the spoken word. Students will learn to identify the devices, tools, and imagery that poets invoke in personal poems, while also maintaining a detachment from the page. They will create experimental spoken word pieces to be recorded and collaborate to create an empowering slam piece that will be uploaded to Usdan’s Youtube Channel.

The Writers Studio was founded by Philip Schultz, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, in 1987

Ways to learn, online and local communities, san francisco, hudson river towns, craft class, view all available classes, hear it from the writers, about the writers studio.

For over three decades The Writers Studio has been helping students become stronger, more resourceful writers — with more craft at their disposal, more knowledge of what makes a piece of creative writing satisfying to a reader, and more access to the full range of their emotions and imagination.

We have developed our own teaching method, which gives students the opportunity to “try on” many different narrative approaches. In the process of studying and trying out the techniques found in a wide array of published work, students end up discovering their own material and voice. They also find a supportive community of like-minded classmates. The school is flexible enough to meet the needs of students at all levels of experience and commitment. Students can take a single six-or eight-week workshop, or proceed through a series of increasingly challenging classes.

2Rs4fun! – A Creative Writing Program

Learn more about our exciting new creative writing program.

A Reading and Creative Writing Program for 3rd and 4th Graders

2Rs4fun! is an after-school and out-of-school creative writing program designed for 3rd and 4th graders. The program was initiated by Mary Dwyer, a retired teacher, in the Shelter Island School District in the Spring of 2008. Its official name is “The Intergenerational Enrichment Literacy Program,” and it aims to enhance the creative writing skills and literacy of the participating students.

We are thrilled to announce that through a collaborative effort between East End Arts, Southampton Youth Bureau, and the F.A.S.T program (Fun Activities with Snacks and Time for Homework), participating students from Riverhead’s Phillips Avenue Elementary School will have the chance to participate in this priceless program.

Register Online - East End Arts

About the 2Rs4fun! Creative Writing Program

The primary goal of 2Rs4fun! is to develop the students’ understanding of how reading can improve their writing abilities. The program fosters originality of thought and expression in children’s writing, encouraging them to see themselves as authors and writers. The program operates in two sessions each year, one in the Fall and another in the Spring. Each session accepts 10 students from grades 3 and 4 after a thorough review of their applications and recommendations from their school faculty. A waiting list is maintained for students who are not accepted in a particular session.

The heart of 2Rs4fun! lies in its dedicated mentors who possess professional writing skills. These mentors work one-on-one with the students outside of the classroom, establishing strong relationships and nurturing the students’ self-esteem. They guide the children in building a solid foundation for their lifelong love of reading and writing. The program emphasizes listening to the children to assess their knowledge and potential. It encourages critical thinking, problem-solving, and the expression of creativity in writing. The mentor-student relationship is considered valuable, as it enriches both the student and the mentor, potentially maximizing the potential of the student while opening up an emotional world for the mentor.

Please note that we are always accepting mentor applications and donations for this program .

At the end of a session, the mentor and mentee often share their appreciation for each other through brief expressions. The program’s philosophy centers on encouraging freedom of topic choice and providing children with the opportunity to write as authentic writers. The program is highly regarded by both the children and the volunteer mentors, who bring it to life with their passion for literacy, writing, and working with children.

2Rs4fun! covers various literary themes in its sessions, including prose book talks, poetry, and reflections on artwork. Notable literature included in the program’s curriculum are books such as “Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters: An African Tale” by John Steptoe, “Sarah Plain and Tall” by Patricia MacLachlan, and “Charlotte’s Web” by E.B. White. Additionally, selected poems by renowned poets like Christina Rossetti, Gwendolyn Brooks, John Ciardi, and Ogden Nash are studied and discussed.

The successful implementation of 2Rs4fun! requires dedicated volunteers, mentors, and funding. In the Shelter Island School District, the program’s costs were covered by The Shelter Island Educational Foundation, Lions Club, and the Library. The program’s staffing includes 10 volunteer mentors, 10 substitute volunteer mentors, a coordinator responsible for gathering information and setting the curriculum, a volunteer coordinator managing volunteer recruitment and substitutions, and a volunteer assistant coordinator handling resource materials and information sheets for each session.

Overall, 2Rs4fun! is a valuable program that promotes literacy, enhances creative writing skills, and fosters a love for reading and writing among 3rd and 4th grade students. Through the guidance of dedicated mentors and a focus on individualized attention, the program aims to empower children to see themselves as authors and writers, allowing them to express their creativity and develop their writing abilities.

What is the best essay writer?

The team EssaysWriting has extensive experience working with highly qualified specialists, so we know who is ideal for the role of the author of essays and scientific papers:

  • Easy to communicate. Yes, this point may seem strange to you, but believe me, as a person communicates with people, he manifests himself in the texts. The best essay writer should convey the idea easily and smoothly, without overloading the text or making it messy.
  • Extensive work experience. To start making interesting writing, you need to write a lot every day. This practice is used by all popular authors for books, magazines and forum articles. When you read an essay, you immediately understand how long a person has been working in this area.
  • Education. The ideal writer should have a philological education or at least take language courses. Spelling and punctuation errors are not allowed in the text, and the meaning should fit the given topic.

Such essay writers work in our team, so you don't have to worry about your order. We make texts of the highest level and apply for the title of leaders in this complex business.

Advocate Educational Integrity

Our service exists to help you grow as a student, and not to cheat your academic institution. We suggest you use our work as a study aid and not as finalized material. Order a personalized assignment to study from.
