Film Review: Crazy Romance (2019) by Kim Han-gyul

crazy romance korean movie review

Actress Gong Hyo-jin reigns supreme when it comes to romantic dramas for television, with any new series featuring her gaining a lot of momentum and fetching good ratings throughout its runtime and awards once its finished. On the silver screen though, she has consciously been trying to build a completely different image to her small screen avatar, featuring in actions films like “ Hit-and-Run Squad ” and thrillers like “ Door Lock ” and “Missing”. Likewise, actor Kim Rae-won has also had a strong presence and following in the romance genre on television but has been seen in action dramas like “The Prison” and “Gangnam Blues” on the big screen. Both of them haven't been in a romantic feature since “You are More than Beautiful” in 2013 and “My Little Bride” in 2003 respectively. So when director Kim Han-gyul managed to sign both of them for her debut “ Crazy Romance ” which of course, as the title suggests, is a romantic dramedy, interest was high in the finished product. But does it live up to the high expectations?

“Crazy Romance” is screening at Udine Far East Film Festival 2020

crazy romance korean movie review

Lee Jae-hoon broke up with his fiancée only a few days ago on their wedding day and has been a sorry mess of a man ever since. Drinking heavily every night and drunk texting/calling friends and colleagues, he lives in a since-unkempt apartment and goes through his job at an advertising agency mechanically. Seon-yeong joins the same advertising agency but it soon becomes evident that she is just as broken emotionally, as Jae-hoon and the rest of her colleagues witness her in a rather embarrassing breakup with her cheating boyfriend. One night, Jae-hoon drunk-calls Seon-yeong but has no recollection of it the morning after, and a friendship develops as the two realize that they have much in common, but are wary as gossip has a way of spreading like wildfire in their small office.

“Crazy Romance” takes a very mature look at a modern day romance, but this isn't the overtly sweet, cheesy first-love story that we usually get. Both Jae-hoon and Seon-yeong are in their thirties and have battle-scars from past romances and relationships and are better or worse because of them. Director Kim Han-gyul, who also wrote the script, took on board stories from people around her and incorporated them into the script, as a result of which the incidences peppered throughout the narrative (and there are a lot of those) feel very slice-of-life. The script also subtly takes on the gender expectations on people of the protagonists' age in the conservative South Korean society, where responsibilities and behavioural expectations are dictated based on one's gender and age, and flips them over, which is an interesting approach.

Office dynamics are also well explored, the various traits of the different colleagues coming across as straight out of real-life. The frequent scenes of company dinners and excursions often remind of a tv K-Drama. In fact, the story as a whole feels like an abridged K-Drama and this is an issue that holds “Crazy Romance” back. There is a lot of familiarity and a sense of deja vu to the narrative throughout, particularly if one is well-versed with these tv dramas. This brings a lot of familiarity and predictability to the story and the film never really rises above that. The finished product would have been a lot poorer if it were not for the two lead actors.

Both Kim Rae-won and Gong Hyo-jin have previously worked together on one occasion, the 2003 tv drama “Snowman” and for fans, it is a joy to witness the two actors together again. But both Kim and Gong have since matured a lot in terms of their performances, which are the biggest reasons “Crazy Romance” remains watchable, both emoting the developing feelings for each other very organically. The rest of the casting further mirrors the K-Drama connection, being comprised mostly of tv regulars. Kang Ki-young plays Jae-hoon's best friend Byung-cheol which feels like an extension of his role in “What's Wrong with Secretary Kim?”, Jung Woong-in plays the Boss and Jang So-yeon plays Mi-yeong, all fun characters that provide most of the comic relief.

“Crazy Romance” does look good, with the many restaurant and office interiors filmed brightly by DOP Son Won-ho and is populated with beautiful actors, but one can't nudge the feeling of mediocrity off it, despite the two leads' immense likability. Ironically, the Korean title for it literally translates as “The Most Ordinary Romance”, which disappointingly also stands true for the hotly anticipated return of Kim Rae-won and Gong Hyo-jin to the romance genre too.

Rhythm Zaveri

Hello, my name is Rhythm Zaveri. For as long as I can remember, I've been watching movies, but my introduction to Asian cinema was old rental VHS copies of Bruce Lee films and some Shaw Bros. martial arts extravaganzas. But my interest in the cinema of the region really deepened when I was at university and got access to a massive range of VHS and DVDs of classic Japanese and Chinese titles in the library, and there has been no turning back since.

An avid collector of physical media, I would say Korean cinema really is my first choice, but I'll watch anything that is south-east Asian. I started contributing to Asian Movie Pulse in 2018 to share my love for Asian cinema in the form of my writings.

Crazy Romance

Story: Jae-hoon (Kim Rae-won) was supposed to get married, but his fiancée left him shortly before the wedding. Since that day Jae-hoon scrapes through everyday life. He goes to work at an advertising company and when his colleagues go out for a drink, he goes with them and continues drinking even after everyone has gone home. In fact, there isn't a day that he doesn't drink. Then one day, new colleague Seon-yeong (Gong Hyo-jin) is welcomed to the team. Her colleagues also witness her being proposed to by her ex-boyfriend. Jae-hoon then overhears Seon-yeong making it clear to her ex-boyfriend that it's over between them. Apparently he cheated on her and after that she also met a man for a short time. Jae-hoon is allergic to the casualness with which the new colleague apparently approaches her relationships. His pain still sits very deep. However, one morning he sees on his phone that the night before he talked to Seon-yeong for two hours when he was really drunk. But he can't remember what they talked about. The two drink together a few times and it becomes clear that Seon-yeong is dealing with the pain of break-up in her own way. Jae-hoon drowns himself in self-pity, but could the somewhat distant looking colleague actually relieve his pain? Are there even feelings developing between them, or are they just two hurt souls sharing the same path for a short while?

Review: Another romantic flick from Korea. At least that's what the somewhat funky title makes you think. In fact, the original title can be roughly translated as "The most ordinary romance" and that is more likely to be what you should expect here. Accordingly, I was pleasantly surprised. Instead of a weird, maybe even sassy female protagonist or a goofy male protagonist, we actually get characters taken out of real life who have well-developed personalities and can also show them in interaction with one another. You are presented with a romantic drama the way life writes it. There are no rose-tinted glasses through which you see new love blossoming, there are also many downsides. The focus here is disappointment and cheating, but also, despite everything, the need to fall in love again after all.

The characters are portrayed likeable, but also with some quirks, by Gong Hyo-jin ( "Door Lock" ) and Kim Rae-won ( "Gangnam Blues" ). As mentioned before, the most important thing in a film of this kind is the chemistry between the protagonists. Neither of the two seems like a cliché and their colleagues also seem believable and natural despite some stereotypical characteristics. Accordingly, everyday office life is captured convincingly. Since the story unfolds through the interaction between people, this also creates a good dynamic. Thus, things never get boring, even if one of the biggest weaknesses is actually the story. In fact, there isn't much happening. That would be fine, since the movie is about people and their feelings anyway, namely those that you carry with you in everyday life and not those that arise in extreme situations.

Somewhere along the way topics like social media and rumors in the workplace are dealt with as well, but everything remains at the surface. In essence, however, the romantic drama is about an interesting aspect of love: that despite all the disappointments and fears, and despite all the stupidities that are involved in the process of building a relationship, you always make the effort to get to know someone. While watching you are certainly entertained by this romantic drama and I thought to myself that there are still reasons to dedicate yourself to the genre from time to time. No embarrassing tears, nothing childish, lovable characters. Everything is very appealing and such a film can surely lighten the mood on dreary days. Unfortunately, shortly afterwards it becomes clear that "Crazy Romance" will not be remembered for long. It is difficult to say whether that is enough for a recommendation. But if you are not completely averse to the genre, you will not be disappointed here.

16 January 2020:

I thoroughly enjoyed this film.  I absolutely love the leads, they have really potent chemistry, I wish they get married in real life🥰.

But again Gong Hyo Jin is known for her chemistry with her leading man that she had become known as the Queen of RomCom.

This film is not heavy going but not too lightweight either.

It is a modern romance for the new generation.

But having said that there is still a difference how men and women are perceived with multiple relationships over time.

Sun Young was just starting in a new job.  There was a welcome party for the team she was joining.

Being a very pretty woman, she was asked if she was seeing someone.

She just said no when a man appeared with a bunch of flowers asking Sun Young to marry him.

It turned out that they had broken up that morning because she found out that he was cheating on her.

Anyway, the ex-boyfriend was making a nuisance of him.  He was hounding Sun Young which was witnessed by Jae Woon.

Jae Woon was not in a good place as he had broken up with his fiancee when she found him with another man in the flat they shared together.

He was bitter that she had done this to him because they were about to be married.  He had bought a house for them and had to really work hard to pay for it.  The invitations had been sent out and the venue for the wedding and the party had been reserved and paid for.

Anyway, he was rather bitter when he herd that Sun Young does not believe in marriage.  He asked her if all women are the same, they no longer believe in the sanctity of marriage.

It got rumoured that Sun Young easily moves from one relationship to the next.

Jae Woon was a bit disparaging about this kind of behaviour but he can’t just help himself.  She seemed to shine bright to him.  He even stopped calling incessantly his ex-girlfriend.

Instead after his nightly habit of drinking himself silly, he had started calling Sun Young instead.

Sometimes he was so drunk that Sun Young can’t help feeling worried for him.

And yet when they were both sober, they would deny their growing attraction with each other.

Until the time when their team had an away day where they went mountain hiking.

Sun Young held back because she found it tough to hike up the mountain.  Jae Woon was there to help/push her along.

During the drink up, everyone got drunk.

Jae Woon noticed that Sun Young was missing.  He looked for her in the toilet but he later found her outside crouched by the wall, drunk.

She would have had an accident had he not hugged her away from the incoming traffic.

Sun Young kissed him teasingly and then he kissed her deeply until they ended up in a motel.  Still they were still saying that they hated in between kissing and clothes coming off one by one.

After a night of passion, Sun Young got dressed quietly and quickly.  She then hastily got out.

When then next saw each other, Sun Young acted as if nothing had happened and that she can’t remember anything.

Poor Jae Woon who had fallen through for Sun Young was crashed and had to pretend that he can’t remember what had happened as well.

Sun Young did want to talk about what happened and called Jae Woon.

His phone was answered by a woman, his ex-girlfriend who had come to visit him to try and reconcile with him.

But he was not interested.

The rumours in the office got so bad that Sun Young had decided to resign.

She was being given a leaving-do party when she turned up already merry (drunk).

She created her own mischief but revealing the secrets of all members of the team.  One was gay one had erectile dysfunction, one was having an affair, one was scared of wife, one had never married because she decided to concentrate on her one-sided love.

With all the intrigues going on, this started a brawl.

Three months later, Jae Woon had sold his house and made a closure good-bye with his ex.

He was once again drinking and then got a text from Sun Young.

He ran off to her and they were both so happy to see each other.

Sun Young said that they should play again their word games by lip-reading.

She said moved her lips.

And smiled happily and said he missed her too.

I was rooting for this unlikely game-playing couple as they navigated the fallout of unhealthy relationships, workplace politics and toxic working culture. Kim Rae-won's expressive wide-open eyes and big, flashy smile and Gong Hyo-jin's cheeky persona make you want to stay awhile in their presence and admire their flirty banter.

I thought this was pretty cute but also tackled some social issues in a lighthearted and easy way.

This film was recommended to me by SupremeLemon as part of the Watch List he made for Maria and me.

Thanks for picking this one to start the year off with, Maria . I look forward to your reaction to the film :)

Crazy Romance is about as energetic as an obligatory fuck. And by fuck, I mean sex. Bad sex.

It goes through the motions but it lacks spirit. Verve. Passion. The actual shit that makes fucking worth doing.

The title is a lie. There's nothing crazy about Crazy Romance -- a tick-tock like a clock romcom that tries to titilate conventionally conservative korean romcoms with the odd mention of 'cock' and 'pussy'. Groundbreaking.

Crazy Romance is a limpdick attempt to fashion some sort of 'edgy' love story about casual sex and heartache without the actual teeth of casual sex and heartache. This film is the cinematic equivalent of a teenager thinking he's Don Juan because he stole a first kiss from his…

One of those few romantic comedies where the lead characters act like actual people. Gong Hyo-jin has been a favourite for years and her charming, comedic and dramatic chops are still wonderful, her chemistry with Kim Rae-won is excellent and this is just a wonderful film that will leave you with a number of smiles and some big laughs. Female-directed too, so get this on your respective watchlists!

Now where can I go and grab a drink with those two?

Most satisfying corn reveal ever.

Gong Hyo jin really is the sun, I love her. Her chemistry with Kim Rae-won is really lovely and this feels like a romance for adults but the good kind, something that is not that easy to do or find. The running time goes by without you realizing it and by the end of this you are rooting for these two to make it work. A very enjoyable watch!

A relatively mature look at love and dating. The acting by the two leads really helps hold the threadbare script together.

Requires getting over some fairly major hurdles to classify it as a romance; whether you find this charming at all will probably depend on your capacity to stomach a plot that revolves entirely around borderline workplace harassment (it's not even really borderline - this could easily be used as an HR training video), skeevy power dynamics, and repeated blackout drunk dialing/texting.

If you are able to get past the film's regressive set-up, what's left is an unsurprising, reassuringly familiar romance story about very cute people slowly realizing they should be cute together. Kim Rae-won wears lots of nice sweaters, and Gong Hyo-jin is radiant and fun.

(Watched as part of the lineup for the Far East Film Festival 22)

Francesco Quario

Everyone in this movie is so good looking that it becomes infuriating. I have very little to say about this, since I mostly watched it as a way to have a laugh with friends and ogle at some sexy people, but if you're into the rom-com genre I'm sure you'll find plenty to like. I particularly enjoyed the film's gender politics, which are much healthier than most other rom-coms, as the woman holds a lot of the cards and the guy is constantly punished for his bullshit until he has to fix his behaviour and become more mature. Again, if you watch this while not drunk and/or horny you might just hate this, but maybe you shouldn't!

Kantorku yang sekarang kayak gini, kehidupan terbelenggu. Harus ikutin jam pulang dia, kalau kita pulangnya lebih cepet nanti dia bilang kalau dia datengnya lebih pagi, jadi sungkan banget kalau pulang duluan. Suka nonton film di bioskop atas dasar keinginan dia, meskopun dia tau kita udah nonton 2x itu film. Nurutin dia mau makan apa, pusyiiiing 😅😅

Loh kok aku malah jadi curhat yaa, maafin, wkwkwk 😅😅

Btw, INI GONG HYO JIN TIBA-TIBA BISA SEMULUS INI GIMANA CARANYA YA RABB. Aside of that, Gong Hyo Jin ini juga memang udah punya gelar queen of romcom ya, jadi ga heran emang kalau rom com yang dia mainin wortit buat ditonton.

Akhir kata, kalo emang kalian butuh film romance kokoreaan yang "ringan", Crazy Romance ini masih cukup wortit buat ditonton. Terutama kalo kalian emang hardcore fans dari kedua tokoh utamanya. Yha~

Rating: Pengen Mabok / 10

Exactly what a romcom should be. Everyone was unhinged and should stop drinking but I was thoroughly entertained.

Jae-hoon is a good-hearted young man working in an advertising company. His marriage dreams get shattered when his fiancee breaks up with him. However, the moment alcohol touches his tongue he becomes a man of dejection. Despite how hard he tries to reconcile with his fiancee she never replies to any of his messages. He unchains his anger and despair by giving inappropriate calls and messages to his friends and colleagues. He gets drunk to the level to which he forgets everything he has done drunkenly. Since his condition is familiar among his colleagues they do not take what he has blabbered through the phone to heart.

One day Sun-young joins his company. Two days after her joining Jae-hoon calls her at night and talks for two hours. Though they acquaints with each other with a little awkwardness soon they get along with each other since they have a lot in common. Sun-young breaks up with her traitor boyfriend and the feeling of getting cheated again makes her insecure about dating or sleeping with a man.

The night when Jae-hoon and his team gather for dinner after the shoot of an advertisement Sun-young learns that Jae-hoon has a good image among his colleagues. Though everyone leaves for home after dinner Jae-hoon stays outside drinking. Sun-young comes to fetch him home. While they talk, he tells her about the efforts that he made to give a good life to his fiancee. She feels sorry for him and he leans towards her to kiss her, making him fall over a table and breaking his arms when she moves away.

One day, the employees go hiking. On that trip, Sun-young and Jae-hoon get to know each other deeply and she sleeps with him. She leaves him the next morning without waking him up and when they meet in the office, he pretends that he does not remember anything about the previous night.

However, news spreads in the office about their relationship and to make the situation even more thrilling one of the colleagues digs out Sun-young’s past and criticises her in the office group accidentally. This incident makes Sun-young leave the office.

As an act of revenge, Sun-young unexpectedly drops at the farewell party hosted by the office without her. Pretending she is drunk, she starts to blabber about the gossip about everyone in the office turning the party into a complete mess. The film ends by showing Jae-hoon and Sun-young playing the word game in a restaurant leaving behind their previous relationships and insecurities in the past.

Office Culture

An office will always have some black sheep who gossip about their colleagues, making the work culture toxic. However, in many cases there is no other go than being nice to everyone in the office, concealing hatred towards them. It is human nature to dig out the ugly past of someone for entertainment. Sun-young is scared of being in a relationship because of her previous experiences. When it comes to criticism, she is the one who is always blamed of.

Kdramalive image of Kong Hyo-jin in "Crazy Romance" (2019).

All the gossip gives her the image of a person with ugly motives. She is sad and feels lonely when no one thinks from her side, but when she meets Jae-hoon, she feels like he is a reflection of herself. The employees ignore Jae-hoon’s misbehaving when he is drunk because everyone is familiar with what happened in his love life.

Family and Trust

Assembling funny events the movie discusses a mature theme like the concept of family and trust. A family is meant to be built upon trust. The movie looks into the lives of people who got betrayed by their partners, while the traitors move on with their new lives. Jea-hoon is a man who is ditched by his fiancee because he was unable to spend time with her but in reality, he was putting all his efforts to have a good life with her. I absolutely loved Crazy Love, an overlooked Romantic Comedy

I just finished this show yesterday and it still lingers in my mind.

Here are some thoughts, including some criticisms, but I still absolutely enjoyed myself, so I still rate it as one of my favourites.

It's like we got two different shows. The first was a hilarious comedy and the second half was a romance/mystery. I don't hold it against the show all that much because I enjoyed both, but that was a bit strange.

Shina was obviously an empath, and this made her behaviour at his vacation home rather strange, despite the fact she thought she was dying. The hammer was overkill. She would have never hit him with it, so even taking it with her seems weird. She never wanted to hurt him, despite her anger. Maybe it was to illustrate that, they had her drop the hammer the minute GoJin cowered in front of her.

The non-lethal onions, on the other hand, were perfect revenge.

The fact that Shina was an empath made her the perfect partner for GoJin. That is what he needed to heal his broken soul. Her empathy is what enabled her to break through the walls he had built. Soo Young might have loved him, but her actions proved that she never really understood him.

I was heartbroken when Segi turned into a villain. I kept holding out, hoping that it was all a misunderstanding. I like that they made up at the end, but it seemed a little too facile. If they were going to make Gojin forgive him this easily, they should have toned down Segi's actions. Maybe just having him try to get Gojin removed as CEO would have been enough. The rest was OTT. Still, I'll take it because I really loved the bromance. That scene, where Gojin eats the peach with all the emotions of a samurai falling on his sword just broke me. It's like at that moment, dying seemed inconsequential next to the betrayal he felt. This echoes his reaction after SooYoung left him.

Some of my favourite scenes were when Gojin met Shina's family. I just loved the immediate acceptance, in sharp contrast with Soo Young father. Another deliberate contrast set up by the show.

Some nitpick

Seo Ji Hoo called Segi to tell him, Gojin dies tomorrow. If someone called me to tell me that my former best friend is about to be murdered, would I just show up to observe and not attempt to interfere? I don't care how angry Segi was. Wanting someone to go down for something you think they did and wanting them dead are very different things. I'm not sure the latter is forgivable. They should have found a different explanation for why he ended up at the scene. And I guess the whole, I was on a business trip but forgot my phone now feels like he was setting up an alibi. Also unforgivable.

All I can think is that the script never planned to have them reconcile in the end but changed it later due to feedback. Still glad they did, despite it not making sense.

Some people in the episode thread commented that he did nothing for the crazy stalker girl and that his apology was a bit curt. I disagree with that. She literally tried to kill him. She kidnapped his love. Acknowledging that he wronged her but without forgiving her was proper I thought. And he didn't apologize to the guy who ran him over, and why should he? Maybe he was a bit harsh in his dismissal but that doesn't give someone an excuse for murder.

Lastly, I was a bit bothered by that last little bit where the detective reveals that other 911 calls were made that night, notably by Segi. As if that even makes up a tiny bit for what he did. Calling 911 after you allowed a murder attempt to occur does not cancel each other out. But as I said, I'll just overlook that because I loved their bromance and this is after all a drama.

Overall high marks from me. The comedy was absolutely hilarious. Go look at that scene where Ma Eun Jung is handing over the test papers. It had me in stitches, it was so hilarious.

Gojin and Shina devotion to each other was wonderful to watch and worthy of a great romance drama. I love that there wasn't the obligatory misunderstanding/breakup. This was instead replaced by an intrigue/mystery, which I much preferred, despite the faults.

Overall, I highly recommend this overlooked drama.
