Common mistakes to avoid when writing Handyman Cover letter

Writing a cover letter for a handyman position is an important step in the job search process. A strong cover letter can help you stand out from other applicants and increase your chances of getting an interview.

When writing your cover letter, there are common mistakes to avoid in order to make the best impression.

Here are some common mistakes to avoid when writing a handyman cover letter:

  • Not following the job posting: If the job listing asks for a specific format, font size, or length, make sure to follow these instructions. Not doing so shows that you are not detail- oriented and not taking the job seriously.
  • Not including relevant experience: Make sure to include on your cover letter any pertinent experience or projects that you have done. This helps to demonstrate that you have the skills necessary to do the job.
  • Making it too long: Keep your cover letter concise and to the point. Going on for too long can make the reader lose interest and not bother reading the rest of it.
  • Not including specific examples: Instead of simply listing skills or experiences, make sure to back them up with examples. This helps to show the reader that you have the necessary skills and experience.
  • Not proofreading: Before sending your cover letter, make sure to read it carefully for any spelling or grammar mistakes. Once you’ve finished proofreading, have a friend or family member read it over as well.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can make sure that your handyman cover letter is as strong as possible. Good luck with your job search!

Structuring and formatting your handyman cover letter

Here's what the structure of your handyman cover letter should include:

  • Header (with your name, the position you're applying for, and the date);
  • Salutation (or greeting);
  • Introductory paragraph (or your opening statement);
  • Body paragraph (or further proof of your experience);
  • Closing paragraph (with a call to action);
  • Signature (that is optional).

Use the same font for your handyman resume and cover letter - modern fonts like Lato and Rubik would help you stand out.

Your handyman cover letter should be single-spaced and have a one-inch margins - this format is automatically set up in our cover letter templates and our cover letter builder .

When submitting your cover letter, always ensure it's in PDF, as this format keeps the information intact (and the quality of your document stays the same).

On one final note - the Applicant Tracker System (ATS or the software that is sometimes used to initially assess your application) won't read your handyman cover letter.

The top sections on a handyman cover letter

  • Header with Contact Information : Include your full name, phone number, and email address so the recruiter can easily reach you for an interview or further discussion about your handyman skills and experience.
  • Greeting : Address the cover letter to the specific hiring manager or company owner if known, to show attention to detail and personalization, which reflects the care you will bring to your handyman duties.
  • Introduction : Briefly introduce yourself, stating your experience as a handyman, and express your enthusiasm for the specific opportunity, highlighting your knowledge of the company’s needs or reputation.
  • Professional Experience and Skill Highlights : Use this section to detail specific handyman skills such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, or other repair work, and include examples of past jobs where you successfully utilized these skills, showing relevance to the tasks expected in the job you're applying for.
  • Closing and Call to Action : End the letter by summarizing your suitability for the role, expressing eagerness to discuss the job further in an interview, and thanking the recruiter for considering your application, which demonstrates professionalism and eagerness to engage.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

  • Proficiency in a wide range of repair and maintenance tasks: Recruiters look for handymen who can demonstrate expertise in various domains such as plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, painting, and more. This versatility is crucial because a handyman must handle diverse requests from clients.
  • Strong problem-solving skills: Handymen often encounter unexpected issues during their work. Recruiters value candidates who can quickly assess a situation, identify the problem, and implement a practical solution.
  • Experience with tools and equipment: A good handyman should be familiar with the tools of the trade, from basic hand tools to power tools and specialized equipment. Knowledge of proper tool use and safety is essential.
  • Customer service orientation: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are vital as handymen interact directly with clients, listening to their needs, explaining technical details, and ensuring customer satisfaction.
  • Attention to detail: Quality craftsmanship is critical in handyman work. Recruiters look for candidates who pay attention to detail and take pride in delivering high-quality, precise work.
  • Reliability and time management: Handymen should be able to manage their schedule effectively and complete tasks within set deadlines. Recruiters seek candidates who are dependable, punctual, and can be trusted to work independently.

How to address hiring managers in your handyman cover letter greeting

Goodbye, "Dear Sir/Madam" or "To whom it may concern!"

The salutation of your handyman cover letter is how you kick off your professional communication with the hiring managers.

And you want it to start off a bit more personalized and tailored, to catch the recruiters' attention.

Take the time to find out who's recruiting for the role (via LinkedIn or the company page).

If you have previously chatted or emailed the hiring managers, address them on a first or last name basis.

The alternative is a "Dear HR team" or "Dear Hiring Manger", but remember that a "Dear Ms. Simmons" or "Dear Simon," could get you farther ahead than an impersonal greeting.

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Company Name] Team,
  • Dear [Specific Department] Manager,
  • Dear Mr./Ms. [Last Name],
  • Dear [Job Title] Search Committee,
  • Dear [First Name] [Last Name],

Your handyman cover letter intro: showing your interest in the role

On to the actual content of your handyman cover letter and the introductory paragraph .

The intro should be no more than two sentences long and presents you in the best light possible.

Use your handyman cover letter introduction to prove exactly what interests you in the role or organization. Is it the:

  • Company culture;
  • Growth opportunities;
  • Projects and awards the team worked on/won in the past year;
  • Specific technologies the department uses.

When writing your handyman cover letter intro, be precise and sound enthusiastic about the role.

Your introduction should hint to recruiters that you're excited about the opportunity and that you possess an array of soft skills, e.g. motivation, determination, work ethic, etc.

What to write in the middle or body of your handyman cover letter

Here's where it gets tricky.

Your handyman cover letter body should present you in the best light possible and, at the same time, differ from your resume.

Don't be stuck in making up new things or copy-pasting from your resume. Instead, select just one achievement from your experience.

Use it to succinctly tell a story of the job-crucial skills and knowledge this taught you.

Your handyman cover letter is the magic card you need to further show how any organization or team would benefit from working with you.

Finishing off your handyman cover letter with what matters most

So far, you've done a fantastic job in tailoring your handyman cover letter for the role and recruiter.

Your final opportunity to make a good impression is your closing paragraph.

And, no, a "Sincerely yours" just won't do, as it sounds too vague and impersonal.

End your handyman cover letter with the future in mind.

So, if you get this opportunity, what do you plan to achieve? Be as specific, as possible, of what value you'd bring to the organization.

You could also thank recruiters for their interest in your profile and prompt for follow-up actions (and organizing your first interview).

Is it beneficial to mention that you have no experience in your handyman cover letter?

Lacking professional experience isn't the end of the world for your handyman cover letter .

Just be honest that you may not have had roles in the industry, but bring about so much more.

Like, your transferable skills, attained thanks to your whole work and life experience (e.g. the skills your summer spent working abroad taught you).

Or, focus on what makes you, you, and that one past success that can help you stand out and impress recruiters (think of awards you've attained and how they've helped you become a better professional).

Alternatively, write about your passion and drive to land the job and the unique skill set you would bring to enhance the workplace culture.

Key takeaways

Creating your handyman cover letter should be a personalized experience for the role and the recruiter, where you:

  • Format your cover letter using the same ATS-friendly font (e.g. Railway) as you did for your resume;
  • Greet recruiters, using their name, and follow up with two sentences to introduce yourself, your interest in the role, and to stand out;
  • Map out one key success from your career (or life) that has taught you job-crucial skills;
  • Substitute your lack of experience with an achievement from your internships, degrees, or volunteering gigs;
  • End with a promise for your potential or your availability for an interview.

What's The Best Structure For Handyman Cover Letters?

After creating an impressive Handyman resume , the next step is crafting a compelling cover letter to accompany your job applications. It's essential to remember that your cover letter should maintain a formal tone and follow a recommended structure. But what exactly does this structure entail, and what key elements should be included in a Handyman cover letter? Let's explore the guidelines and components that will make your cover letter stand out.

Key Components For Handyman Cover Letters:

  • Your contact information, including the date of writing
  • The recipient's details, such as the company's name and the name of the addressee
  • A professional greeting or salutation, like "Dear Mr. Levi,"
  • An attention-grabbing opening statement to captivate the reader's interest
  • A concise paragraph explaining why you are an excellent fit for the role
  • Another paragraph highlighting why the position aligns with your career goals and aspirations
  • A closing statement that reinforces your enthusiasm and suitability for the role
  • A complimentary closing, such as "Regards" or "Sincerely," followed by your name
  • An optional postscript (P.S.) to add a brief, impactful note or mention any additional relevant information.

Cover Letter Header

A header in a cover letter should typically include the following information:

  • Your Full Name: Begin with your first and last name, written in a clear and legible format.
  • Contact Information: Include your phone number, email address, and optionally, your mailing address. Providing multiple methods of contact ensures that the hiring manager can reach you easily.
  • Date: Add the date on which you are writing the cover letter. This helps establish the timeline of your application.

It's important to place the header at the top of the cover letter, aligning it to the left or center of the page. This ensures that the reader can quickly identify your contact details and know when the cover letter was written.

Cover Letter Greeting / Salutation

A greeting in a cover letter should contain the following elements:

  • Personalized Salutation: Address the hiring manager or the specific recipient of the cover letter by their name. If the name is not mentioned in the job posting or you are unsure about the recipient's name, it's acceptable to use a general salutation such as "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear [Company Name] Recruiting Team."
  • Professional Tone: Maintain a formal and respectful tone throughout the greeting. Avoid using overly casual language or informal expressions.
  • Correct Spelling and Title: Double-check the spelling of the recipient's name and ensure that you use the appropriate title (e.g., Mr., Ms., Dr., or Professor) if applicable. This shows attention to detail and professionalism.

For example, a suitable greeting could be "Dear Ms. Johnson," or "Dear Hiring Manager," depending on the information available. It's important to tailor the greeting to the specific recipient to create a personalized and professional tone for your cover letter.

Cover Letter Introduction

An introduction for a cover letter should capture the reader's attention and provide a brief overview of your background and interest in the position. Here's how an effective introduction should look:

  • Opening Statement: Start with a strong opening sentence that immediately grabs the reader's attention. Consider mentioning your enthusiasm for the job opportunity or any specific aspect of the company or organization that sparked your interest.
  • Brief Introduction: Provide a concise introduction of yourself and mention the specific position you are applying for. Include any relevant background information, such as your current role, educational background, or notable achievements that are directly related to the position.
  • Connection to the Company: Demonstrate your knowledge of the company or organization and establish a connection between your skills and experiences with their mission, values, or industry. Showcasing your understanding and alignment with their goals helps to emphasize your fit for the role.
  • Engaging Hook: Consider including a compelling sentence or two that highlights your unique selling points or key qualifications that make you stand out from other candidates. This can be a specific accomplishment, a relevant skill, or an experience that demonstrates your value as a potential employee.
  • Transition to the Body: Conclude the introduction by smoothly transitioning to the main body of the cover letter, where you will provide more detailed information about your qualifications, experiences, and how they align with the requirements of the position.

By following these guidelines, your cover letter introduction will make a strong first impression and set the stage for the rest of your application.

Handyman skills: Resume and Cover letter

A handyman is a specialist in building repairs who may perform as a self-employed contractor, for a company, or a single homeowner or real estate firm. A handyman can be skilled in several transactions, including basic woodworking, piping, small electrical cables, and maintenance services. More expertise and specialized knowledge may improve your chances of finding work as a handyman. In this post, we will go over basic handyman skills along with examples to add to a resume and cover letter.

What are handyman skills?

Image for part: What are handyman skills?

Handyman skills pertain to the diverse capabilities that a handyman implements for overall repair work and development. Equipment setup, woodworking, standard piping, wiring, upkeep, and restoration are all widely known skills. Through occupational training, apprenticeship, self-directed research, and ongoing job experience, handymen can optimize and acquire new talents over time.

List of handyman skills

Below is a list of the most popular skills that handymen possess;

A handyman's standard carpentry abilities include discovering studs, placing closets, building racks, anchoring bookshelves, and fixing damaged furniture. Unlike other occupations, carpentry doesn't need a license; as a result, many handymen broaden their carpentry competencies to the point where they can accomplish bigger projects by themselves. Cupboard making, deck and porch construction, and even small home modifications and renovations are examples of large-scale projects. Carpenters are skilled craftspeople who cut, shape, and insert wood for residences and other constructions. General carpenters construct, redevelop, implement, retain, and fix buildings formed of wood and other components. Here is an example of including carpentry handyman skill in a resume and cover letter;

  • Delivered handyman services in need of overall woodworking, painting, and home improvements.
  • General carpentry from beginning to end, drywall setup, internal/external painting, gardening, and yard cleaning.

Repairing a running restroom, substituting a wax seal, and unblocking drains are all examples of basic plumbing tasks. More intricate work, such as installing a water heater or closing off the water system to eliminate and substitute broken pipes, may also be included in basic plumbing.

Electrical work

Electrical work can be risky and necessitates the services of a certified specialist. A handyman, on the other hand, must be capable of completing some simple relevant duties. In a handyman role, you may be willing to take responsibility for electrical duties such as finding and employing a fuse box, rebooting breakers, substituting, or putting light fittings.

Placement and repair of equipment

Prominent handyman jobs include connecting and keeping basic equipment such as washers, and dishwashers, which involve a combination of pipework, wiring, small motor, and woodworking capabilities.

Building maintenance

Building maintenance is a wide type that includes everything from basic activities like washing to more complex duties like waxing floors, redecorating defective or broken walls, or extracting and substituting flooring and carpeting. Landscape servicing, gutter cleanup, and covering fractures and holes on paved areas are all examples of outdoor maintenance. Here is an example of including building maintenance handyman skill in a resume and cover letter;

  • Conducted building repairs on homes, offices, and rental apartments.
  • Recovered homes and established repair and building works.

Sheetrock, also referred to as wallboard, or drywall, is a type of platform made mainly, and sometimes almost entirely, of a delicate mineral and filled between various materials. It is utilized in the rapid building works of interior walls and ceilings. The packaging around and within the drywall is typically formed of specific paper or fiberglass and may contain extra layers and ingredients that reduce the likelihood of fires and flood out-break. Here is an example of including sheetrock handyman skill in a resume and cover letter;

  • Established drywalls, drop ceilings, doors, and windows.
  • Drywalls, brickwork, carpentry, and some gardening are examples of construction projects.

Exterior Painting

Exterior painting is the process of applying paint to an external surface, like the top of a building or the outside of a vehicle. This procedure is generally used when polishing a home, either in base coats that assist paint conform to the outer layer or last longer via different climates or in paint coats of the desired home color. Here is an example of adding exterior painting handyman skill in a resume and cover letter;

  • Handled minor remodeling tasks such as indoor/outdoor painting and outdoor landscaping design and maintenance.
  • Offered internal/external painting services.

Masonry corresponds to brickwork, which could be a relatively simple or far more complicated system. Brickwork, supplying stone for a pathway or wall, or blending out the cement are all examples of basic masonry. Framework or other enhanced construction would be required for more complex masonry jobs. Here is an example of adding masonry handyman skill in a resume and cover letter;

Types of Handyman Resumes

When it comes to writing a handyman resume, there are several types of formats that you can choose from. These include the chronological, functional, and combination resumes.

Chronological Resume

The chronological resume format is the most commonly used format. This format is ideal for handyman professionals who have a consistent work history and have no major gaps in their employment.

With a chronological resume, your work experience is listed in reverse chronological order, starting with your most recent job first. The job title, company name, dates of employment, and job responsibilities are included for each position.

This format highlights your career growth and progression, making it attractive for employers who are looking for experienced candidates.

Functional Resume

The functional resume format is a skills-based format that focuses on your skills and abilities rather than your work history. This format is ideal for handyman professionals who have gaps in their work history or are looking to change careers.

With a functional resume, you would list your skills and accomplishments first, followed by your work history. This format allows you to highlight your transferrable skills and showcase your strengths.

The functional resume format is ideal for job seekers who have a diverse skill set that is not necessarily reflected in their work history.

Combination Resume

The combination resume format is a hybrid of the chronological and functional resume formats. This format is ideal for handyman professionals who have a solid work history and want to showcase their skills and accomplishments.

With a combination resume, you would start with a summary of your skills and abilities, followed by a detailed work history. This format allows you to highlight your most important skills and accomplishments, while still providing a comprehensive overview of your work history.

Structuring Your Handyman Resume

When it comes to creating your handyman resume, the structure is just as important as the content. By following a clear and logical structure, you can make sure that your resume stands out to potential employers and clearly showcases your skills and experience.

Here are the key sections that you should include in your handyman resume:

Contact Information and Personal Details

The first section of your handyman resume should include your contact information and personal details. This should include your full name, address, phone number, and email address. It’s also a good idea to include links to your professional social media profiles, such as LinkedIn.

This is your chance to showcase your skills and experience and make a strong first impression on potential employers. Your summary or objective statement should be brief and to the point, highlighting your key strengths and achievements.

Skills Section

After your summary or objective statement, you should include a section dedicated to your key skills. This should include a list of your technical and soft skills, as well as any relevant certifications or licenses you hold. Make sure that your list of skills is tailored to the specific requirements of the job you are applying for.

Professional Experience Section

The bulk of your handyman resume should be dedicated to your professional experience. This section should include a list of your previous jobs, along with your duties and achievements in each role. Make sure that your descriptions are clear and concise, and highlight how your experience has prepared you for the role you are applying for.

Education Section

In addition to your professional experience, you should also include a section dedicated to your education. This should include your degree or diploma, along with any relevant courses or certifications you have completed. If you have limited work experience, your education section can help to showcase your skills and knowledge.

Certifications and Licenses Section

If you hold any relevant certifications or licenses, be sure to include this information in a separate section of your handyman resume. This can include trade certifications, safety certifications, and any other relevant licenses that demonstrate your skills and expertise.

Volunteer Experience Section (if applicable)

If you have any relevant volunteer experience, be sure to include this in a separate section of your handyman resume. This can include volunteer work for community organizations, charitable groups, or other relevant organizations. This section can help to demonstrate your commitment to your community and your willingness to go above and beyond in your work.

By following this structure, you can create a clear and effective handyman resume that showcases your skills, experience, and qualifications. With a great resume in hand, you’ll be well on your way to landing your dream handyman job.

Job Search Strategies for Handymen

A well-written handyman resume is essential to securing a job, but it’s not the only step you need to take. You also need to develop an effective job search strategy to find the right opportunities. Here are four job search strategies that will help you get noticed by potential employers:

Networking Tips

Networking is an incredibly valuable tool in any job search, and it’s especially important for handymen. Start by reaching out to your existing network – family, friends, former colleagues, and even acquaintances – and let them know that you’re looking for work. They may know someone who is hiring or have connections that can help you get in the door.

Joining professional organizations, attending industry events, and participating in online communities can also help you expand your network. These activities can provide you with opportunities to meet other handymen, learn about job openings, and gather information about potential employers.

Online Job Search Strategies

Online job search strategies should also play a key role in your job search. Start by creating a profile on job search sites like Indeed, Monster, and LinkedIn. These sites allow you to search for jobs, apply online, and set up alerts for new job postings that match your qualifications.

In addition to job search sites, you should also target company career pages and industry-specific job boards. These sites often have job postings that aren’t listed elsewhere and can be a valuable source of job leads.

Job Fairs and Events

Job fairs and events are another great way to connect with potential employers. These events are specifically designed to bring together job seekers and hiring managers, giving you the opportunity to make a personal connection.

Before attending a job fair or event, research the participating companies and bring copies of your resume. Dress professionally, be prepared to answer common interview questions, and don’t be afraid to ask questions of your own.

Working with Staffing Agencies

Staffing agencies specialize in connecting job seekers with temporary, contract, and permanent positions. Working with a staffing agency can take some of the stress out of your job search by providing you with access to opportunities you wouldn’t otherwise have access to.

When working with a staffing agency, it’s essential to be honest about your skills, experience, and job preferences. This information will help the agency find roles that are the best match for you. You should also be prepared to participate in any assessments or interviews that are required by the agency.

By using these four job search strategies, you will increase your chances of finding the right job and standing out in a competitive job market. A well-crafted handyman resume coupled with a solid job search strategy will lead to success.

Salary Expectations for Handymen

As a handyman, your salary expectations can be influenced by several factors. These factors include experience, skills, location, and demand for your services. Understanding how these variables affect your salary can help you determine a reasonable salary expectation.

Factors that Affect Handyman Salaries

Your experience in the handyman industry plays a significant role in determining your salary. As you gain more experience, you become more skilled and more valuable to employers. Experienced handymen can command higher salaries than entry-level candidates.

The skills you possess also play a role in determining your salary as a handyman. The more skills you have, the more valuable you become to employers. Skills such as carpentry or plumbing can result in a higher salary than someone with only general handyman skills.

Your location can also affect your salary expectations. For instance, handymen working in metropolitan areas tend to earn more compared to their counterparts in rural areas. That’s mainly because the cost of living is higher in metropolitan areas, and so are salaries.

Demand for Your Services

The demand for your services in a particular area will affect your salary expectations. If the demand for handymen is higher than the supply, you can expect your salary to be higher than if the supply is higher than demand.

Average Salary Range for Handymen

The average salary range for handymen varies depending on experience and location. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median hourly wage for handymen was $20.04 in 2020. This translates to an annual salary of approximately $41,680.

However, this salary can vary depending on your location, experience, and demand for your services. Handymen in metropolitan areas tend to earn more, with some earning over $30 per hour.

Salary Negotiation Tips

Negotiating a fair salary is crucial, especially since every penny counts. Here are some tips to help you negotiate a salary that accurately reflects your skills and value:

  • Research salaries in your area to have a baseline for what you should ask for
  • Consider your experience and skills when asking for a higher salary
  • Be confident when discussing your worth with potential employers
  • Consider non-monetary benefits such as health insurance or extra time off if a higher salary isn’t possible

Your salary expectations as a handyman depend on your experience, skills, location, and demand for your services. Understanding these factors is essential when negotiating for a salary that accurately reflects your value. Don’t be afraid to speak up for what you’re worth and remember that salaries can vary depending on location and experience.

How to Improve Your handyman Resume

Navigating resume pitfalls can mean the difference between landing an interview or not. Missing job descriptions or unexplained work history gaps can cause recruiters to hesitate. Let's not even talk about the impact of bad grammar, and forgetting your contact info could leave your potential employer hanging. Aim to be comprehensive, concise, and accurate.

Include your Contact Information and Job Descriptions

Missing job descriptions lessens your chances of getting hired..

  • Employers want to know what you've accomplished, so make sure to include descriptions for all of your previous jobs.
  • Keep job descriptions short but don't just list your jobs.
  • Never copy-paste a job description to post on your resume. Get inspired and use tools to help you write customized descriptions.

How to Optimize Your handyman Resume
