10 most lucrative PhD degrees in the US

Harvard. Stanford. MIT. Yale. These are some of the names of the most prestigious universities in the US — a country you’d think would draw international students to pursue the most lucrative PhD degrees.

But recent data suggests otherwise.

In a post-pandemic world, data from a College Scorecard report titled “Buyer Beware: First-Year Earnings and Debt for 37,000 College Majors” revealed surprising details of post-college outcomes for students and families about that all-important first year after graduation.

A master’s degree graduate in dentistry from Ohio State University, for example, earned US$19,267 a month with a US$2,019 monthly debt repayment.

Meanwhile, a PhD graduate in Registered Nursing at Marshall University earned US$14,700 with a US$2,152 monthly debt repayment.

Beyond this, the report also found that:

First-year earnings for the same degree in the same major can vary by US$80,000 at different colleges and universities.
Workers with less education can often make more than workers with more education.
Higher levels of education do not always result in higher student loan repayments.

What are the most lucrative PhD degrees according to the College Scorecard report?

The reports provide us with two forms of metrics.

Looking at the highest first-year returns, we can determine the most lucrative PhD degrees by subtracting the monthly debt repayment from a graduate’s monthly earnings.

Using an earlier example, a PhD graduate in Registered Nursing from Marshall University would have a net monthly earning of US$12,548.

You can cross-check this data with the state rankings to see how earnings, debt, and earnings net of debt stack up across majors and institutions.

This shows us that the Registered Nursing PhD graduate is making over US$20,000 more than the average PhD graduate in West Virginia, where Marshall University is based.

We can also see that a PhD law graduate from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, has a net monthly earning of US$12,806. The monthly earnings net of debt in New York, however, is US$4,728.

The lowest-paying PhD degrees

According to the report, most PhD graduates had a monthly earning of US$6,000 and a monthly debt payment of US$1,000.

But there are those who earn far less than this — even resulting in negative net income, i.e. owing more than earning. H ere are some of the lowest-paying PhD degrees from this data:

Highest paying PhD degrees: Why it’s important to be paid well

In Australia, t he standard scheme to fund the living costs of PhD candidates is a tax-free stipend from their university. The university is allocated the funds via the Research Training Programme (RTP) .

Last year, the stipend was US$28,854 annually (indexed annually against inflation). That’s only two-thirds of the national minimum wage after an increase to US$42,246.88 .

With a weekly income of US$554.88, PhD candidates are well below the poverty line of US$608.96 for a single person if they have to pay for housing.

What’s happening in Australia is not isolated. According to a report by journal Nature, only a “few” PhD programmes pay a living wage.

This is concerning not only because today’s scholars deserve better pay given the importance of their work to advancing knowledge, but also because there are many expenses that can crop up in the midst of their research.

They could discover that more equipment is needed or that it needs fixing, for example. Then there are conferences to attend so that they have the latest updates in their field.

A PhD in USA takes approximately 5 – 6 years of full-time study and can cost between $12,000 – $45,000 per academic year. PhD programs in USA differ from that in the UK and Europe in that students must first take taught classes, coursework and exams before starting their research project.

Why Do a PhD in USA?

The United States has long had some of the most distinguished universities and advanced PhD programmes in the world. Combined with curriculum flexibility, rigorous teaching methods, vast funding opportunities, breathtaking campuses and significant career prospects, it’s no wonder that it is one of the most sought-after study destinations for research students.

In addition to comprehensive training standards, here are a few other reasons why a student may choose to undertake their PhD in the United States:

Longer learning timeframes – A PhD in the US lasts longer than a PhD in the UK or Europe. This allows students to more confidently transition from undergraduate to postgraduate studies; more commonly referred to as ‘graduate studies’ in the US. This gives you the opportunity to learn more about your subject, research methods and academic writing in general before starting your research project.
World-class universities – It’s no secret that some of the most well-known higher education institutions that continue to dominate global rankings are based in the United States. Universities in USA

Universities in the United States can be divided into two types: public universities and private universities.

Public universities are financed by the state in which they are based. Because of this, public universities charge less for students from within the state and more for students from outside the state, including international students.

Private universities are not financed by their state, but by private donors, research funds and tuition fees. For this reason, private universities generally charge higher tuition fees than public universities and require all students to pay the same amount, regardless of whether they come from out-of-state or abroad.

Method of Study

The main difference between a PhD in the US and a PhD in Europe lies in the program structure. Whereas a European PhD essentially consists of a single phase lasting three to four years , an American PhD consists of three different phases, each with its own time frame.

Phase One – The first phase lasts approximately two years and focuses on building a basic foundation for the doctoral student. This phase consists largely of taught components such as lectures, tutorials and laboratory sessions, in which the student learns more about theoretical concepts and research methods within their discipline.
Phase Two – The second phase can be considered an assessment phase, which runs both periodically alongside and at the end of the first phase. Here, students complete coursework and take exams on the basis of the material they have covered of which they must pass in order to proceed to the third phase.
Phase Three – The third phase lasts approximately three years and resembles the European PhD structure. During this period, the student undertakes an independent research project, including forming a research design, conducting experiments, writing a thesis (more commonly referred to in the USA as a dissertation) and sitting a viva exam.

Teaching Requirements

Besides structure, a key difference between a PhD program in the US and in Europe is the focus on teaching requirements. In the US, doctoral students are expected to lecture, lead tutorials, host laboratory sessions, mark coursework and provide office hours for undergraduate students. Although students studying in European will likely contribute to these at some point during their study, this would normally be on a voluntary basis and involve less time commitment.

Research Flexibility

Another difference is project flexibility. In Europe, students typically apply to a PhD project predetermined by a supervisor, and although there may be some scope to adapt the project, depending on the funding provider , it will usually be limited to how the project is carried out rather than what it is about. In the US, however, a student applies to become a doctoral candidate within a department rather than applying for a particular research project. This is because students are expected to decide on their thesis topic (also commonly referred to as a dissertation research topic) near the end of their first phase after they have developed a better understanding of their subject and know where their interests lie. Therefore, research students in the US generally have more flexibility and influence in the direction of their research than students in the United Kingdom or Europe.

PhD Admission Requirements in USA

PhD admission into US universities can be highly competitive, both because of the limited number of positions and the large number of annual applicants.

The eligibility requirements for a doctoral program in the USA can generally be divided into four sections:

Grade Point Average (GPA) – in the US, a scoring system known as Grade Point Average is used to measure academic ability. A student’s GPA is calculated as a weighted score of the subjects they study during their undergraduate degree; an equivalent score is calculated by universities for international applicants. Although universities rarely set minimum GPA requirements for doctoral study, it’s worth being aware that a GPA of 3.0 is equivalent to a UK second class honours (2:1); the typical entry requirement for UK universities.
Graduate Records Exam (GRE) – most universities will require you to take a series of examinations known as Graduate Records Exams, which are used to determine your suitability for graduate study. GREs will assess your analytical, reasoning and critical thinking skills as well as your depth of your subject.
Student aptitude – in addition to academic ability, US universities also look for characteristics of a strong researcher. These include traits such as engaging in the subject in your own time, e.g. by attending talks and conferences, demonstrating a high degree of independence and enthusiasm, and a general passion for your subject.
English Language Proficiency – international students whose first language is not English must sit language exams such as IELTS or TOELF to demonstrate their English language proficiency.

International students will also require a F1 student visa in order to study in the US, however, you would typically apply for this after you have secured a place into a doctorate program.

How to Apply for PhD in USA

When applying for a PhD position at a graduate school, the application process will differ between universities, however, they will all typically ask for the following:

Academic CV – a short document summarising your educational background and current level of experience .
Personal statement – a document which outlines why you believe you are suitable for PhD study and your passion for the subject.
Academic transcripts – a complete breakdown of the modules and their respective marks you have taken as part of your previous/current degree.
GRE scores – a transcript of your Graduate Records Exam results.
Research statement – a condensed version of a research proposal outlining your general research interests, if required.
Recommendation letters – references from several academic referees who endorse your qualities as a person, your abilities as a student and your potential as a doctoral researcher.

Application Deadlines and Fees

Since PhD programs in the United States have taught components, they commence at the same time as all other taught degrees, and therefore share the same application deadlines and start dates. This corresponds to an application period that typically begins in August and ends in February. Admission decisions are typically made in April, with successful students starting in August/September.

When you apply to a graduate school, you will be expected to pay a fee for each doctorate application to cover the school’s administrative costs for processing your application. The fee varies from university to university, but typically ranges from $50 to $100 .

Funding your PhD in USA

It’s very common for a PhD student to receive financial aid in the form of a PhD scholarship; in fact, this will be the case for the vast majority of students in the US.

PhD funding can be ‘fully funded’ covering the student’s graduate program tuition fees, accommodation and living costs, or ‘partially funded’ covering the student’s tuition fee only in part or full.

Besides funding, a graduate student can take on an assistantship, such as a graduate teaching assistant or research assistant, in which they take on a part-time salaried position at the university alongside their studies.

Due to the international and collaborate nature of American universities, there are also a number of international scholarships available, such as the Fulbright Scholarship and the AAUW International Fellowship .

PhD Duration in USA

In the US, a PhD takes approximately 5 – 6 years to complete if studying full-time, and 8 – 10 years if studying part-time.

If you already have a Master’s degree, your first phase can be shortened by one year at the discretion of the university.

Cost of a PhD in USA

The cost of a PhD program in the US can vary considerably depending on the type of university, i.e. whether it’s a public or private university, the doctoral course, i.e. whether it’s in a STEM subject such as computer science, engineering or a non-STEM subject, and whether you are a home or international student.

In general, however, the typical annual tuition fee for a PhD in the US is between $12,000 and $45,000 per academic year.

As with any doctoral degree, additional costs may include travel for collaborations, bench fees, accommodation and living expenses.

While figures like this seem substantial, it's important to remember that scholarships, grants, fellowships and assistantships significantly reduce the out-of-pocket expenses for most PhD students. For instance, the average grant aid for a doctoral degree is $16,502 annually, and 21.4% of PhD students surveyed by the Education Data Initiative offset their costs with teaching assistantships.

As a result, actual paid expenses are often much lower than the listed tuition and fees.

Books and Materials

The cost of study materials, including textbooks and research supplies, varies depending on the specific requirements of your field of study.

For example, PhD students in Earth Sciences or Chemistry might need to invest in lab equipment and materials, while students in Humanities may require numerous books and subscriptions to academic journals.

Yes, many top universities in the USA offer fully funded PhD programs for eligible students. This funding pays for the student's graduate school tuition fees, accommodation and living expenses. Partially funded PhDs only cover the student's tuition in part or in full.

Some PhD students will receive a stipend from their institution with an assistantship position, but this varies between institutions and between departments within institutions. For part-time students in the USA, a PhD can take eight to ten years, but it usually takes five to six years for full-time students. PhDs can be completed in four to five years rather than five or six for students with a masters degree in an appropriate subject.

Tuition and Fees Overview

The Bloomberg School operates on academic terms, instead of semesters.

a term is eight weeks (about half a typical semester)

the traditional Academic Year is four terms (August to May)

Full-time status requires registering for 12 or more credits per term. Registering for 11 or fewer credits per term is defined as part-time status.

Tuition is assessed per term by the Office of Student Accounts & Business Services . Review the grid below to estimate the cost of your program .

Student Accounts also has information regarding non-degree applications , payment due dates and payment options .

Merit Scholarships are awarded by the academic departments. The Financial Aid Office provides assistance with need-based grants, federal and private loans, and the Federal Work-Study Program. The Financial Aid Office also calculates the Cost of Attendance , which includes direct and indirect costs.

BLOOMBERG SCHOOL TUITION 2024-2025

Tuition rates for the following academic year are reassessed and approved each spring. Each year, the Board of Trustees vote to increase tuition 2-4%.

Breakdown by Program Type including Scholarships

(48.5-50.5 credit programs, students can complete the programs in 2-4 years)

Tuition for Certificates

Part-time BSPH degree students and non-degree students pursuing a certificate program pay the Bloomberg School's part-time per credit tuition rate, multiplied by the number of academic credit units taken for the certificate program; all certificate programs require a minimum of 18 academic credits, and many programs require more than 18 credits.
Non-Degree Students enrolled in the School’s 3 OPAL certificate programs will receive the OPAL scholarship.
Part-time BSPH degree students and non-degree students who take 12 or more academic credits in one term will be charged the School’s full-time tuition rate for their enrollment for that term. That is, they will be charged the full-time rate, rather than being charged for course credits individually.
The BSPH tuition rate for future academic years may be different from the current rate, so students who will require more than one academic year to complete their certificate program should anticipate that the cost per academic credit may vary in future academic years.

Full-time BSPH degree-seeking students who have matriculated into an academic degree program at BSPH do not pay additional tuition for certificate courses, with the exception of Institute courses, whose costs are typically separate from degree program costs.

Full-time students enrolled in a degree-program at another division of JHU should check with the Office of Records and Registration at their primary school of record to obtain information about the number of courses they may take at BSPH and the cost associated with those courses.

Summer, Fall, and Winter Institute Tuition

Students taking Summer, Fall and/or Winter Institute courses for academic credit must pay the Bloomberg School's part-time per credit tuition rate, multiplied by the number of academic credit units taken.

For Summer Institute courses in 2024, the tuition rate is $1,374/credit.

Full-time students in BSPH academic degree programs must pay for enrollments in Summer and Winter Institute courses separately, and in addition to their full-time tuition. Full-time students enrolling in up to 11 credits will pay per credit, and students enrolling in 12 or more credits will pay a flat rate.

Fall Institute Non-credit rate: 140 euros or approximately $154.00 per day/credit

Winter Institute 2024 Non-credit rate: $661 per credit

Summer Institutes 2024 Non-credit Rate: The non-credit rate for participants in Summer Institutes courses in 2024 is $687 per credit. Individual Summer Institutes may offer scholarships for courses taken not for academic credit, and information about these scholarships is listed on the individual Summer Institute webpages .

Postdoctoral Fellows

Bloomberg school fees 2024-2025, estimated cost of attendance for 2024-2025.

The estimated cost of attendance at the Bloomberg School includes direct expenses, (tuition and fees) which are billed by the School, and indirect expenses for estimated living costs. The living allowance below is developed in compliance with federal regulations for determining eligibility for federal student aid (loans and work-study funding). These values should only be used as an estimate. Your actual costs will vary based upon needed books, supplies, and living arrangements. Students with special circumstances for unanticipated expenses (see the FA-Budget Adjustment Request Form for examples) can request a budget adjustment to their cost of attendance that may allow for additional federal loan borrowing eligibility.

A PhD is highly valued in today’s job market, as more people earn graduate level degrees. The research skills and knowledge that a PhD provides employees is something that many organizations are seeking. Having a PhD also says that you can work on extensive projects independently and be detail oriented and see projects through to the end.

Stephanie decided to do a PhD when her son was close to entering elementary school because there was more time to focus on doctoral studies with him starting regular school and because she felt it was needed to move forward in her career in terms of doing more research, teaching, and becoming an independent professional who could earn money freelancing. She had a spouse with a good income, however, which makes this type of flexibility to study, be a parent, and work more doable. This is not to say that single parents can’t do a PhD while working, but honestly, it will be much easier if you can work part-time and have extended family who are very involved in your children’s lives.

This blog focuses more on the cost factor, but the other above other factors to weigh when deciding whether to do a PhD program are critical as well. Here is Dave’s vlog on the cost factor of getting a PhD degree:

Stats on average cost

Whether you’re looking to gather information on how much the average PhD costs or are comparing your program to others, you will find that costs vary. According to an informal poll Dave took of R3ciprocity.com users (n= 36, 2020 USD), when asked “How much was the total cost of your doctorate degree? (USD, 2020 dollars)” the average response was $60,000 USD.

The table below shows the breakdown in responses to Dave’s question about cost. You can see that there is a wide range of costs. Here is the link to the poll if you would like to participate. As you well know, more data increases accuracy of any poll results.

These numbers are likely representative of people around the world and private and public programs, more so than other surveys, because the R3ciprocity channel has a global audience. In addition, Dave’s questions focused on the total cost of a program. The results also skew towards people who are doing a PhD in business related fields.

Different types of PhD programs will vary in their costs. The National Science Foundation has a survey that’s based on looking at PhDs and how much it actually costs to get a degree, but those numbers will typically be from respondents in the United States. According to the survey, a PhD program is likely to cost you around $15,000 per year for 5 years, which is about $75,000.

What else should I incorporate into a cost estimate?

However, there are some other costs that are not necessarily represented by this cost estimate. One is lost income from perhaps decreasing the hours you can work at your day job and the cost of not getting a promotion due to this reduction in hours. The 4-7 years that you spend doing a doctoral degree could be spent advancing in your career and making more money. This is something you should budget and plan for, but of course not something that directly impacts the cost of tuition. These are sometimes called opportunity costs .

You might also think about the possibility that you do not complete your degree or for some reason decide it’s best to switch programs or to pursue a degree in a slightly different field. If you do this, it will cost you, but you simply may not be able to afford to make such a change once you’ve begun a program. The more that you go down the ‘Rabbit Hole’ in a knowledge domain, the harder it is to switch to another domain. The investment you have made will likely hinder you from choosing other career paths.

Think about relocation costs as well. If you are admitted to a highly regarded program in a different city, what is the cost benefit of spending money to move to a new city to do that program? Are you losing money selling a home? Are you moving to a city with a higher cost of living. Do you have work lined up in that new city? Think about the impact of moving on your family members as well.

University Brand (Or Reputation & Status)

You also need to think about the value of a PhD degree based on the brand of the university. We do not necessarily want to think about a PhD from one program being more valuable than a PhD from a different program, but you should think about this a bit. PhDs from top tier programs (think U.S. News and World Report ) will generally be viewed as having similar value, but hiring Universities and even organizations may view a PhD from a middle or lower tier program as less valuable. ( You really should read this great post on figuring out the best PhD programs. )

This is not to discourage you from studying at an average program that may be more affordable and better for you, but it is simply the reality of the competitive academic job market. What you do to make up for going to a lower tier program is do all of the research assistantships and teaching that you can possibly do to build up your CV. Most PhD programs are basically respectable, and how you do after graduating may have more to do with what you did with your time in the program, whether you were mentored, received awards or scholarships, engaged in research, traveled, networked, etc. than the brand.

While most programs are respectful, do not fall into the trap of pursuing an online PhD, for example, that is worth very little in the world of academia or on the market. There are some for-profit programs for example that take advantage of students who are not necessarily ready for PhD level work but admit them anyway. Coursework and assignments may not be on par with reputable PhD programs and the teaching may be pretty bad. They may even be akin to a diploma mill at the PhD level. Do your research and make sure you are applying to a program that is basically respected in your field and have good evaluations from students and professionals in the field. Talk to people, talk to graduates from these programs, and do some online research.

Reducing the cost of doctoral programs

Conversely, there are some factors that would reduce the cost of a PhD degree that are not necessarily incorporated into the above cost estimate for earning a doctoral degree. For example, most programs will offer research or teaching assistantships that will reduce the cost of tuition through full or partial tuition remission or providing a stipend for a limited number of hours of work each week. You might also be awarded a grant or scholarship, a fellowship, or a stipend for study or research abroad, which will reduce the cost of obtaining your degree. When thinking about the value of a PhD degree you should also think about more than the projected salary in the field you are entering. You may end up in a similar field or a field that is somewhat different from the field you started out in. You might find yourself doing something you couldn’t have imagined when you started your PhD adventure, and making more money to boot! A PhD of any kind is in high demand and you might just find yourself making more money by doing something outside academia, even if you set out to be an academic. You might end up starting your own consulting firm or working in government (Although, in some fields this is more rare than others).

There are a number of resources and articles available to help you think about all the aspects of what all the “costs” may mean for you when thinking about earning a PhD.

Grad School Cost Calculators : Most academic institutions have information on their websites regarding tuition, fees, room and board costs, and are often broken down by semester and year. You can also find calculators to help you determine how your ability to pay out of pocket combined with grants, scholarships and loans will look like. The calculator linked here is great because it gives you a visual comparison of assumed net worth before and after a program like a PhD, as well as how long it may take to see the benefits of a higher level of education.

Johns Hopkins ranked No. 1, as it did last year, in the Doctor of Nursing Practice program rankings. Some Colleges Will Soon Charge $100,000 a Year. How Did This Happen?

Some Vanderbilt students will have $100,000 in total expenses for the 2024-25 school year. The school doesn’t really want to talk about it.

It was only a matter of time before a college would have the nerve to quote its cost of attendance at nearly $100,000 a year. This spring, we’re catching our first glimpse of it.

One letter to a newly admitted Vanderbilt University engineering student showed an all-in price — room, board, personal expenses, a high-octane laptop — of $98,426. A student making three trips home to Los Angeles or London from the Nashville campus during the year could hit six figures.

This eye-popping sum is an anomaly. Only a tiny fraction of college-going students will pay anything close to this anytime soon, and about 35 percent of Vanderbilt students — those who get neither need-based nor merit aid — pay the full list price.

But a few dozen other colleges and universities that reject the vast majority of applicants will probably arrive at this threshold within a few years. Their willingness to cross it raises two questions for anyone shopping for college: How did this happen, and can it possibly be worth it?

Who Pays What

According to the College Board, the average 2023-24 list price for tuition, fees, housing and food was $56,190 at private, nonprofit four-year schools. At four-year public colleges, in-state students saw an average $24,030 sticker price.

That’s not what many people pay, though, not even close. As of the 2019-20 school year, according to federal data that the College Board used in a 2023 report , 39 percent of in-state students attending two-year colleges full time received enough grant aid to cover all of their tuition and fees (though not their living expenses, which can make getting through school enormously difficult). At four-year public schools, 31 percent paid nothing for tuition and fees while 18 percent of students at private colleges and universities qualified for the same deal.

Those private colleges continue to provide hefty discounts for people of all sorts of incomes. A National Association of College and University Business Officers study showed private nonprofit colleges and universities lowering their tuition prices by 56 percent from the rack rate during the 2022-23 school year.

Vanderbilt provides discounts, too, and its financial aid is extraordinarily generous. This year, it announced that families with income of $150,000 or less would pay no tuition in most instances .

Still, over 2,000 students there who get no need-based or merit aid will soon pay $100,000 or more. Why does Vanderbilt need all of that money?

Where the Money Goes

At a few small liberal arts colleges with enormous endowments, even $100,000 would not cover the average cost of educating a student, according to the schools. Williams College says it spends roughly $50,000 more per student than its list price, for instance.

In other words, everyone is getting a subsidy. Perhaps its list price should be over $100,000, too, so that its endowment is not offering unneeded help to wealthy families. Or, perhaps, a price that high would scare away low-income applicants who do not realize that they might get a free ride there.

According to Vanderbilt, its spending per undergraduate is $119,000. “The gap between the price and cost of attendance is funded by our endowment and the generous philanthropy of donors and alumni,” Brett Sweet, vice chancellor for finance, said in an emailed statement.

No one at the school would meet with me to break this figure down or get on the phone to talk about it. But Vanderbilt’s financial statements offer clues to how it spends money. In the 2023 fiscal year, 52 percent of its operating expenses went to faculty, staff and student salaries and wages, plus fringe benefits.

Robert B. Archibald and David H. Feldman, two academics who wrote “ Why Does College Cost So Much? ,” explained in their book why labor costs were so tricky at these institutions.

“The critical factors are that higher education is a personal service, that it has not experienced much labor-saving productivity growth, and that the wages of the highly educated workers so important at colleges and universities have soared,” they said. “These are economywide factors. They have little to do with any pathology in higher education.”

Critics of the industry still believe that a kind of administrative bloat has set in, driving up tuition with outsize salaries. But what is bloat, really?

Administrators oversee compliance, like the laws that have made it possible for disabled people to get to and through college and keep schools from discriminating against women. If we don’t like regulation, we can vote for different legislators.

Similarly, families in a free market can make alternative choices if they want fewer mental health practitioners and their bosses, computer network administrators, academic advisers or career counselors. And yet the first (prescreened) question that Vanderbilt’s chancellor, Daniel Diermeier, answered on family weekend this past fall was about whether Vanderbilt should invest even more in career advising in the wake of the school’s five-spot decline in the annual U.S. News rankings .

Is It Worth It?

If many families are not exactly lining up for a cut-rate residential undergraduate education, they’re still asking plenty of good questions about value. So is a $400,000 college education ever worth it?

It depends, and you knew that answer was coming, right?

Most college shoppers wonder about income outcomes, and it’s possible to search by undergraduate major on the federal government’s College Scorecard website . This program-level data exists for alumni who are four years out from graduation, though only for those who received any federal financial aid.

Vanderbilt’s biomedical/medical engineering majors have median earnings of $94,340 four years out. English language and literature majors are earning $53,767.

Those are fine results, but are they exclusive to Vanderbilt? “You could get an engineering degree at a state flagship university that’s just as valuable as something you’d get at Vanderbilt,” said Julian Treves , a financial adviser and college specialist whose newsletter tipped me off to the goings-on there.

I spent a few days trying to get Vanderbilt’s vice provost for university enrollment affairs, Douglas L. Christiansen , to talk to me and answer these questions squarely and more expansively, but I did not succeed. A university spokeswoman sent me some generalities in his name. “We are committed to excellence at all levels, from the quality of our faculty, programming, facilities and research labs to the services we provide to support the academic, emotional and social well-being of our students,” went the statement.

In anticipation of the absence of a substantive reply, I attended a group information session for 125 or so prospective students and asked there, too. The senior admissions officer who took the question refused to answer. I’d never seen that before, and I’ve been to these sessions at dozens of schools over the years.

But really, why should an actor in a competitive marketplace answer that question if the person doesn’t absolutely have to? Without publicly available, industrywide quantitative data on quality — happiness scores, customer satisfaction, measures of learning, return on friendship, the strength of career networks — the list price alone serves as a signal of excellence, to some shoppers at least.

And thousands of applicants respond to the signal each year by volunteering to pay the list price, even as the school rejects the vast majority of applicants. Or maybe they volunteer precisely because Vanderbilt and schools like it reject the vast majority of applicants.

So a $100,000 list price is not our highest-priority outrage. The spectacle of wealthy people freely purchasing luxury services is nothing new, even if it is a totally worthy object of scrutiny (and an understudied phenomenon by academics themselves, ahem).

What is a problem, then? Brent Joseph Evans , an associate professor of public policy and higher education at Vanderbilt’s college of education and human development, started his career as an admissions officer at the University of Virginia. There, he sold the institution to boarding school students in New England and teenagers in the Appalachian foothills.

The former group might pay $100,000 per year, though many of them won’t get into the Vanderbilts of the world in the first place. They will surely find their way somewhere.

But that latter group? Professor Evans is worried about their access to any school at all.

“We should care about whether they get into a state university system at a low cost and find a well-paying career that can keep them in the middle class,” he said. “I do think that sometimes any tension over what elite colleges are doing moves us away from what we should be caring about as a society.”

Tuition and fees at universities have continued to climb, even when adjusted for inflation.
The result may be a generation of students wondering if college is worth it.

The price of getting a degree has continued to climb at American universities, with the cost of some schools reaching a new threshold. It's leaving many wondering if it's a good investment.

Schools like New York University, Tufts, the University of Pennsylvania, and Yale are pegging the total cost of university attendance — which covers tuition, housing, food, supplies, books, and more — for the 2024-25 school year at over $90,000, according to their websites.

NYU, already known for its high fees, estimates the total cost for the next school year will be $93,184, with tuition ($62,796) and food and housing ($24,652) listed as the most expensive line items. The total is up 3.3% from the $90,222 estimated for this school year.
