2. Use a professional format and design

Your application letter should follow a formal letter of application format. Use a standard font like Times New Roman or Arial, and keep the font size between 10 and 12 points. Include your contact information, the date, and the employer’s contact information at the top of the letter.

There are many layouts online that you can use. Find one that represents your style and complements your resume.

3. Make it engaging from the start with a strong opening

DHS Opens Applications for Instructor Certification Program on Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management

Applications are NOW OPEN for the 2025 National Threat Evaluation and Reporting (NTER) Master Trainer Program. Applications will remain open through November 30, 2024 !

The Master Trainer Program (MTP) certifies Federal, State, Local, Tribal, and Territorial (F/SLTT) homeland security partners in the instruction of Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) techniques and best practices. This instructor development program prepares F/SLTT partners to train their local communities in a Behavioral Approach to Violence Prevention and empowers homeland partners to mitigate threats and prevent acts of targeted violence. It is available to ALL current employees of a public sector F/SLTT agency with at least two years of experience in the public safety field.   There are many NTER Master Trainers across the DHS Enterprise!

A whole of community approach is critical to targeted violence prevention . Accepted applicants join a large and fast-growing national network of over 500 public safety professionals from over 40 states and 2 U.S. Territories, all of whom teach BTAM techniques and best practices within their own communities and agencies. This multi-disciplinary network, spanning a wide range of fields including law enforcement, public health, critical infrastructure, school safety, and workplace violence prevention partners, shares resources and best practices, enabling effective implementation of BTAM across the country and across all sectors of government.

The NTER Program Office actively works to encourage collaboration across the Master Trainer Network, providing opportunities across the country for trainers to engage and collaborate with fellow public safety professionals who are working towards the common goal of violence prevention.

Understanding Your FEMA Letter

FRANKFORT, KY. – Kentucky disaster   survivors who applied for FEMA assistance following the May 21-27 severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, landslides and mudslides will receive a letter from FEMA in the mail or via email. 

The letter will explain your application status and how to respond. Please read it carefully, because it will include the amount of funds you will receive for specific types of assistance, and important information on the appropriate use of disaster assistance funds.

Applicants who receive a letter stating they are not eligible for assistance may need to submit additional information or supporting documentation for FEMA to continue to process an application for financial assistance. Examples of missing documentation may include:

  • Proof of insurance coverage;
  • Settlement of insurance claims or denial letter from insurance provider;
  • Proof of identity;
  • Proof of occupancy;
  • Proof of ownership;
  • Proof that the damaged property was the applicant’s primary residence at the time of the disaster.

If you have questions about your letter, call the disaster assistance helpline at 800-621-3362 to find out what information FEMA needs.

A FEMA inspection may be required to determine whether a home is safe, sanitary, accessible and functional. FEMA considers the following factors in the home inspection:

  • Heating, ventilation and air conditioning system (HVAC).
  • Access and exits, including privately-owned roads, privately-owned bridges and privately-owned docks.
  • Blocking, leveling and anchoring of a mobile home, and reconnecting or resetting its sewer, water, electrical, oil, and fuel lines and tanks.
  • The exterior of the home is structurally sound, including the doors, roof and windows.
  • The electricity, gas, heat, plumbing, sewer or septic systems function properly.
  • The interior’s livable areas are structurally sound, including the ceiling and floors.
  • The home is capable of functioning for its intended purpose.
  • There is safe access to and from the home.

FEMA assistance is not the same as insurance. FEMA assistance only provides funds for basic work to make a home habitable, including items such as toilets, a roof, critical utilities, windows and doors.

Appealing FEMA’s Decision

If you disagree with FEMA’s decision, you may appeal. It must be submitted within 60 days of the date of the decision letter.

The letter from FEMA will include additional information on the types of documents needed if you choose to appeal FEMA’s initial decision. The documents apply specifically to the decision made. 

For example, if you are appealing for additional assistance to help repair your home, you will want to provide FEMA with any receipts, bills or repair estimates received for the repairs needed to your home as a result of the disaster. 

With your decision letter, FEMA will also provide an Appeal Request Form that may be used to help provide additional information, if you choose to provide additional information.

Tailor the application letter to each job. Your letter should address key points in the job description from the listing, as well as how you can apply your knowledge and experience to the position. You want to emphasize why you are the best candidate for this specific job.

Don’t copy information straight from your resume. Your resume is meant to act as a formal record of your professional experience, education, and accomplishments. The job application letter is where you highlight a few particular details from your resume, and use them to demonstrate how your experience can apply to the job.

What’s the difference between a cover letter and a job application letter?

A cover letter normally is attached with a resume for a specific job opening, whereas a job application letter can be submitted independently. As already stated, a job application letter can also be known as a cover letter. Format wise, there are a lot of similarities.

However, a job application letter can also be more detailed than a cover a letter. Usually a cover letter acts a quick introduction to a resume when a candidate applies for a specific job opening.

Meanwhile, you can submit a job application letter to a company even if there are no job openings. In this case, you would provide more detail about yourself and your qualifications. Due to this, job application letters tend to be a little longer than the average cover letter.

Dos and don’ts for writing a job application letter

Now that we’ve gone through the basic formatting for a job application letter and a few examples of what one might look like, how can we condense all that information into digestible pieces?

Refer to these lists of “dos” and “don’ts” to help you through your drafting process:

Explain what you can bring to the company. Consider: how is your experience relevant to what the hiring manager is looking for?

Discuss your skills. Pick out a few skills listed in your resume and describe how you have utilized them in the workplace.

Give specific examples to support your experience. Is there a major project you worked on at your last job ? Did you accomplish something significant in your previous position? Including examples of these things in your letter will add new, specific content to your application and make you more interesting.

Edit your letter thoroughly. Read your letter a couple times, pass it off to someone to look over, run it through an online grammar check. Make sure it’s free of any errors.

Don’t focus on what the job can do for you. While it might seem nice to write that a job is your dream job or that you’ve always wanted to work with a company, it can read as vague flattery. Remember, this letter is about your qualifications.

Don’t list your current or previous job description. Your education and work experience certainly have value, but don’t just list your degrees and places you’ve worked at. Explained what you learned from those experiences and how they’ve made you a strong employee.

Don’t paste directly from your resume. A job application letter is meant to add to your value as a candidate, not just reiterate the same information repeatedly. Use your resume as a guide , but expand on especially relevant details.

Don’t submit an unedited letter. Before an employer ever meets you, they see your application and your job application letter. You don’t want grammar errors and misspelled words to make a bad first impression, so make sure to edit your draft multiple times.

Application letters are typically written to accompany school or job applications. The purpose of the letter is to introduce yourself to the decision committee, and to outline your qualifications in a specific way. It can be the only time other than an interview that you have a chance to really stand out in an application, so it's important to get it right. You can learn what to include in your letter, how to style it, and how to format it to give yourself the best chance.

Writing a Job Application

Step 1 Say why you're writing and what you're applying for in the first sentences.

  • A good example would be: "I'm writing to apply for the Chimney Sweep position advertised in Rolling Stone. I think my experience in the heating industry makes me uniquely qualified for this position. Please find my application materials and a brief description of my qualifications below."
  • Don't write your name until the signature. It'll be in the header and in the sign-off, so there's no reason to put it in the body of the letter itself.

Step 2 Explain why you are the best candidate.

  • Be specific. Who are you? Where do you come from? What's your story? These details are important. HR screeners read hundreds of these.
  • Describe your ambitions. Where do you want to go? How will this opportunity help you get there?
  • What skills and experiences make you the right fit? Be as specific as possible and avoid vague language. It's better to describe a time you solved a specific problem at your last job than to just write, "I'm a good problem solver at work."

Step 3 Keep the tone professional.

  • Tailor it to the business. If you're applying to work at a record store, you need to talk about music. If you're applying to work at a tech company that writes, "Tell us something totally rad about yourself!" it's probably ok to be a little more informal.

Step 4 Explain how both parties will benefit from your selection.

  • Don't over-promise. Telling someone that you can guarantee that you'll be able to turn around their sales figures in six months or less is a good way to get fired in six months.

Step 5 Do some research.

  • Any kind of job requires this type of research. If you apply to a restaurant, you need to be familiar with the menu and the kind of customers the restaurant attracts. Consider eating there a few times before you apply.
  • Don't show you're familiar by criticizing a business and telling them what you can do better. Not the time to offer a harsh criticism of a business plan that you don't really know anything about.

Writing a School Application

Step 1 Address the prompt.

  • Common prompts include things like, "Outline your qualifications for this position" or "In writing, explain how this position would affect your career goals." Sometimes, the prompt will be as short as, "Tell us something interesting about yourself."
  • If there is no prompt, but you still feel the need to introduce your application with a letter, it's usually best to keep it as short as possible. Explain what you're applying for, why you're applying, and thank the contact for their consideration. That's it.

Step 2 Tell your story.

  • Often, college prompts will ask you to describe a time you struggled, or a time you overcame some obstacle. Write about something unique, a time that you actually failed and dealt with the consequences.
  • The board will get thousands–literally, thousands–of letters about someone's first mission trip, and letters about the time someone's sports team was beaten, then overcame the odds, and won again. Avoid these topics.

Step 3 Write about your future.

  • Be specific. If you're writing to a college board, don't say, "I want to go to this college because I need a degree." That's obvious. What do you want to do with it? Why? If you're applying to a business, don't say, "I just need a job." That's obvious. Why this specific job?

Step 4 Don't include stuff that's also on your resume.

  • If you're applying to schools, what do you like about the school? What faculty are you interested in? Why this school, instead of another?

Formatting Application Letters

Step 1 Keep it short.

  • If you don't get a word-count guideline, just focus on making one or two good points about yourself, and keeping it at that. No need to drone on four several pages.

Step 2 Only address the letter if you have someone to address it to.

  • Instead of a salutation, write, "Letter of Application" at the top left corner of the page, or put it in the header on the left side at the top.
  • If you do have a contact, address it to them, making sure the name is spelled correctly. Then space down and start the body of the letter. [10] X Research source

Step 3 Use a standard font.

  • Sometimes, it's appropriate to type your name, then print out the letter and sign it in pen. That can be a nice touch.

Call for Experts: Technical Advisory Group on health, migration and displacement

The WHO Health and Migration was established in 2020 and is now situated within the Healthier Populations Division.  All of the WHO Health and Migration’s work is framed by the following priorities identified in the  WHO Global Action Plan on promoting the health of refugees and migrants (GAP) :

  • Priority 1. Promote the health of refugees and migrants through a mix of short-term and long-term public health interventions;
  • Priority 2. Promote continuity and quality of essential health care, while developing, reinforcing and implementing occupational health and safety measures;
  • Priority 3. Advocate the mainstreaming of refugee and migrant health into global, regional and country agendas and the promotion of: refugee-sensitive and migrant sensitive health policies and legal and social protection; the health and well-being of refugee and migrant women, children and adolescents; gender equality and empowerment of refugee and migrant women and girls; and partnerships and intersectoral, intercountry and interagency coordination and collaboration mechanisms;
  • Priority 4. Enhance capacity to tackle the social determinants of health and to accelerate progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, including universal health coverage;
  • Priority 5. Strengthen health monitoring and health information systems.
  • Priority 6. Support measures to improve evidence-based health communication and to counter misperceptions about migrant and refugee health

WHO Health and Migration is forming an expert technical advisory group for the period 2024-2026 to support the implementation of the GAP on promoting the health of refugees and migrants and other related activities. The Technical Advisory Group (TAG) will play a key role in achieving the five core functions of WHO Health and Migration, which are aligned with the GAP and the WHO GPW14 objectives to promote, provide, and protect health. These functions particularly focus on reducing health inequities by addressing the social, economic, environmental, and other determinants of health, supporting countries in developing evidence-informed policies across all levels of government, and adapting public health measures to meet the health needs of populations such as migrants and displaced people.

During 2024-2026 the TAG will:

  • Advise WHO Health and Migration on all technical areas, with a focus on implementing and monitoring the GAP, and implementing the  Global research agenda on health, migration and displacement  and associated Global Research Network on health, migration and displacement.
  • Participate, according to area of expertise, in the development of further norms, standards, research products, and technical guidance on DHM priority areas such as health, migration and displacement in the context of: climate change, UHC/PHC, health financing, vaccination, communicable and non-communicable diseases, and health system strengthening.
  • Provide technical advice on global, regional and national activities, high level events, and technical assistance initiatives, such as: the Global Consultation on the Health of Refugees and Migrants; the national health system reviews; the Global School on refugee and migrant health; the Global Evidence Series on Health and Migration (GEHM).

Functions of the Technical Advisory Group on health, migration and displacement

The technical advisory group is being formed to support the implementation of the GAP and other activities related to improving the health of migrants, refugees and other displaced populations carried out by WHO DHM, on the core thematic areas of:

  • Providing global leadership and high-level advocacy on the health of migrants, refugees and other displaced populations;
  • Providing technical assistance to countries and partners;
  • Setting norms and standards and promoting research;
  • Monitoring trends, documenting progress and developing tools.
  • Multi-lateral, inter-regional collaboration and strategic partnerships.

The TAG will have thematic sub-groups focusing on priority areas. Over the next two years, it will support DHM’s work in technical assistance, research prioritization, implementation research, data, policy, and normative guidance in the areas of universal health coverage, healthier populations, and health emergencies, with a focus on topics such as:

  • Migrant- and refugee-inclusive universal health coverage, primary health care, and health financing;
  • Equitable access to and use of vaccines among migrants, refugees, and other displaced populations;
  • The health of migrants, refugees, and displaced populations in the context of climate change; and
  • Non-communicable diseases and communicable diseases, migration, and displacement.

Operations of the Technical Advisory Group on health, migration and displacement 

Members of the TAG will participate in monthly online advisory and/or working group meetings from 2024 to 2026. There will be one in-person meeting each year, with additional interim online meetings as needed. The working language of the group will be English.

Who can express interest?

The TAG will be multidisciplinary, with members who have a range of technical knowledge, skills and experience relevant to the field of health, migration and displacement, specializing in the following topics: universal health coverage, health emergencies, and social determinants of health. Particular expertise on the following topics relating to health, migration and displacement is also sought: health system strengthening, climate change; vaccination; non-communicable diseases; communicable diseases; UHC/PHC; health financing.

Approximately 30 members may be selected.  WHO welcomes expressions of interest from:

  • academic experts,
  • operational actors,
  • individuals from policy and public health institutes across all WHO regions.

Experts will be invited to join the TAG based on:

  • Contributions to the field of health, migration and forced displacement, in research, policy or practice;
  • Active work history in the field of health, migration and displacement, in research, policy or practice, for at least 10 years, at the national, regional and/or international level;
  • Technical expertise in at least one of DHM’s priority areas outlined above.

Applicants may have expertise in the following areas, among others: public health, medicine, sociology/medical anthropology, health systems, health promotion, health policy, political science, economics, health economics, epidemiology, legal and human rights, gender. 

Submitting your expression of interest

To register your interest in being considered for the TAG on health, migration and displacement, please submit the following documents by 24:00 Geneva time (midnight CET) 10 th September 202 4 to [email protected] using the subject line “Expression of interest for the Technical Advisory Group on health, migration and displacement:”

  • A cover letter, indicating your motivation to apply and how you satisfy the selection criteria. Please note that, if selected, membership will be in a personal capacity; therefore, do not use the letterhead or other identification of your employer;
  • Your curriculum vitae; and
  • A signed and completed Declaration of Interests (DOI) form for WHO Experts, available at https://www.who.int/about/ethics/declarations-of-interest .

After submission, your expression of interest will be reviewed by WHO.  Due to an expected high volume of interest, only selected individuals will be informed. 

Important information about the selection processes and conditions of appointment

Members of WHO advisory groups (AGs) must be free of any real, potential or apparent conflicts of interest. To this end, applicants are required to complete the WHO Declaration of Interests for WHO Experts, and the selection as a member of a AG is, amongst other things, dependent on WHO determining that there is no conflict of interest or that any identified conflicts could be appropriately managed (in addition to WHO’s evaluation of an applicant’s experience, expertise and motivation and other criteria).

All AG members will serve in their individual expert capacity and shall not represent any governments, any commercial industries or entities, any research, academic or civil society organizations, or any other bodies, entities, institutions or organizations. They are expected to fully comply with the Code of Conduct for WHO Experts ( https://www.who.int/about/ethics/declarations-of-interest ). AG members will be expected to sign and return a completed confidentiality undertaking prior to the beginning of the first meeting.

At any point during the selection process, telephone interviews may be scheduled between an applicant and the WHO Secretariat to enable WHO to ask questions relating to the applicant’s experience and expertise and/or to assess whether the applicant meets the criteria for membership in the relevant AG.

The selection of members of the AGs will be made by WHO in its sole discretion, taking into account the following (non-exclusive) criteria: relevant technical expertise; experience in international and country policy work; communication skills; and ability to work constructively with people from different cultural backgrounds and orientations. The selection of AG members will also take account of the need for diverse perspectives from different regions, especially from low and middle-income countries, and for gender balance.

If selected by WHO, proposed members will be sent an invitation letter and a Memorandum of Agreement. Appointment as a member of an AG will be subject to the proposed member returning to WHO the countersigned copy of these two documents.

WHO reserves the right to accept or reject any expression of interest, to annul the open call process and reject all expressions of interest at any time without incurring any liability to the affected applicant or applicants and without any obligation to inform the affected applicant or applicants of the grounds for WHO's action. WHO may also decide, at any time, not to proceed with the establishment of the AG, disband an existing TAG or modify the work of the AG.

WHO shall not in any way be obliged to reveal, or discuss with any applicant, how an expression of interest was assessed, or to provide any other information relating to the evaluation/selection process or to state the reasons for not choosing a member.

WHO may publish the names and a short biography of the selected individuals on the WHO internet.

AG members will not be remunerated for their services in relation to the AG or otherwise. Travel and accommodation expenses of AG members to participate in AG meetings will be covered by WHO in accordance with its applicable policies, rules and procedures.

The appointment will be limited in time as indicated in the letter of appointment.
