A Girl Named Anna by Lizzy Barber (Review by Trina Griep)

a girl named anna book review

Suspense and thriller books are not my thing – I tend to find the genre predictable. A Girl Named Anna, the breakout book by Lizzy Barber was no different. However, I did find the structure and content exciting. The book was taken as one story from two perspectives – Anna and Rosie’s. When Anna decides to disobey her Mamma and go to an amusement park for her 18th birthday, she starts to untangle something within herself that seemed to be suppressed for quite some time. She begins her struggle to understand what is happening to her.

Rosie, on the other hand, knows what is happening to her – however, her family doesn’t know what happened to her sister, Emily. The 15 year anniversary of Emily’s disappearance is coming up quickly and money is running out to continue the search. It’s a desperate time for the family and Rosie decides to take matters into her own hands, risking her own safety to solve the puzzle.

Both perspectives run parallel to one another, like pieces of the same DNA, connected tenuously yet never crossing paths. Different experiences of family life are outlined – Rosie’s family has been torn apart, ruminating over Emily’s disappearance while Anna has lived under her Mamma’s watchful eye, a strong focus on cleanliness and purity.

I enjoyed the sense of curiosity, investigative spirit and similarities to real-life cases. Both characters attempt to get answers at the cost of all else, with a sense of scheming in order to get to the truth, whatever it may be. The connection to The Lilies cult as part of the storyline reminded me of The Farm in Riverdale and some real-life kidnapping cases. Father Paul was an interesting character, with his level of control and “purity”. The way cult leaders manipulate people in pain to bring them into their way of living was incredibly well captured.

Overall, three stars out of five and the book left me hanging! What happened in the house?! Was Mamma still alive? What happened to Anna?

a girl named anna book review

If your whole life is a lie, who can you trust? Raised in a quiet rural community, Anna has always been taught that her mamma’s rules are the only path to follow. But, on her eighteenth birthday, she defies her mamma for the first time in her life and goes to Astroland. She’s never been allowed to visit Florida’s biggest theme park, so why, when she arrives, does everything about it seem so familiar? And is there a connection to the mysterious letter she receives that same day—a letter addressing her by a different name?

Rosie has grown up in the shadow of the missing sister she barely remembers, her family fractured by years of searching without leads. Now, on the fifteenth anniversary of her sister’s disappearance, the media circus resumes as the funds dedicated to the search dry up, and Rosie vows to uncover the truth herself. But can she find the answer before it tears her family apart?

Winner of the Daily Mail First Novel Competition, A Girl Named Anna is a psychologically riveting read that introduces Lizzy Barber as an outstanding new voice in suspense fiction.

A GIRL NAMED ANNA is an engrossing debut novel that’s part mystery and part family drama. At the center of this book is a child abduction and its aftermath for everyone involved. The story alternates between two teenage protagonists: Anna in Florida, being raised by her very religious mother, and Rosie in England, whose older sister Emily vanished 15 years earlier at an amusement park. On this year’s anniversary of Emily’s disappearance, things happen that propel both girls forward to find out the truth. This was a suspenseful and emotional book that I couldn’t put down! I enjoyed Anna and Rosie’s alternating perspectives as their discoveries brought them closer and closer together. Gripping & unsettling!

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

a girl named anna book review

Welcome to my stop on the A Girl Named Anna blog tour, and a big thank you to Harlequin Mira for the invitation! A Girl Named Anna is available now.

My thoughts:.

Anna has always followed the rules laid out by her “Mamma;” however, when she turns eighteen, she travels to Astroland, a big theme park. She’s immediately struck by how familiar the park seems, and she receives a letter addressed to different name.

Rosie’s sister has been missing for years, and her family is torn apart emotionally by the search and lack of answers. It’s fifteen years since her sister went missing, and the anniversary is approaching. Rosie is determined to find her sister herself.

A Girl Named Anna is written with the emotion you’d expect in a missing child story. It was even more powerful to hear the story in two voices. Even though initially the plot may seem obvious, the details and how it’s unveiled slowly add to the suspense of the narrative.

Overall, this is a quick, compulsive, compassionate read. I love an emotional story, and this one was not lacking. It was also unsettling, tense, and engrossing.

I received a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

About the Book:

A compulsive suspense debut for fans of Megan Miranda, Wendy Walker and Kimberly Belle, about two teens–one sheltered by her strict and reclusive mamma, one living in the shadow of the missing sister who was snatched from a theme park as a toddler–and their search for the truth about their families and each other. If your whole life is a lie, who can you trust? Raised in a quiet rural community, Anna has always been taught that her Mamma’s rules are the only path to follow. But, on her eighteenth birthday, she defies her Mamma for the first time in her life, and goes to Astroland. Lovely picture, wonderful review, Jennifer! I added this mystery thriller to my tbr list. Happy Reading to you, too. 🌹💕📚💐🥰😘

Thanks so much, Virginia! I hope you get a chance to read it!

Awesome review my friend! This one sounds really good and can you guess where I’m off to now Jen?😂😂🌞💜

Thanks, Sus! This was such a good little read! A quick one! ♥️

I am intrigued! An emotional story with a bit of suspense – sounds great! Hope everything ended well for Rosie and Anna.

Yes, you nailed exactly what it was! Just a twist of suspense to it! More of a mystery.

Sounds good – these stories of people being found who were abducted as children are always heart-breaking. I doubt it’s possible to really put a family back together again after so much time has passed. How do you manage to resist eating the treats in your pics? If I tried it, it would just be lots of pictures of crumbs… 😀

It is tough and emotional for sure.

Sad story about these macs. I “forgot” about them until yesterday, and they tasted like plastic because I waited too long. If only I had eaten them by Tuesday, they would have been amazing! That’s how I roll though. I forget what I have because I’m so all over the place.

Hahaha! No sweet thing in my house ever gets forgotten, although vegetables often do… 😉

This seems like an emotional read. I like how you mentioned the story has a slow build that keeps you reading. I always appreciate stories told from two perspectives.

I do, too, LP, regarding the narrators. It can offer such a richer story!

I’m totally on a binge of this sort of story. Fantastic review Jennifer.

A GIRL NAMED ANNA

by Lizzy Barber ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 3, 2019

A page-turning look at the aftermath of a parent’s worst nightmare.

On the 15th anniversary of her sister’s disappearance, a young woman launches her own investigation in British author Barber’s U.S. debut.

Rosie Archer was only a baby when her 3-year-old sister, Emily, disappeared at Astroland, a Florida amusement park they visited while on vacation from England. Her parents haven’t given up hope that Emily is still alive, but Rosie and her younger brother, Rob, have largely borne the brunt of the fallout. The high profile of Rosie’s famous music producer father has ensured that everyone knows who Rosie is. It’s not the kind of celebrity she wants, and her parents are understandably overprotective; Rosie chafes at this situation with risky behavior. Fifteen years haven’t blunted the guilt and blame that cycle between Emily’s parents, and while it’s obvious they’ve done their best by Rosie and Rob, the siblings' lives have been irrevocably shaped by the sister they never knew. When Rosie finds out that the trust set up to fund the search for her sister is about to run out, she decides she’s going to find out what happened to Emily and hopefully get closure for herself and her family. Meanwhile, in Florida, 18-year-old Anna Montgomery lives with her reclusive, ultrareligious mother, Mary, and is ecstatic to be heading for the forbidden Astroland with her boyfriend, William. It’s there that she flashes on some disturbing memories, and a letter hand-delivered to her mailbox calling her by another name causes Anna to question her entire existence and do a little digging (literally) of her own. Readers will quickly know the “who” of the story—it’s the “why” that’s the focus, and Rosie’s and Anna’s dual narratives lend intimacy and emotional resonance. Anna’s story often veers into Carrie territory, and Barber renders the Archers’ heart-wrenching plight with realistic emotional intensity. While it stretches credulity a bit that a teen, even a clever one like Rosie, would have more luck than all those Scotland Yard investigators and private detectives, readers willing to just go with it will find a lot to enjoy.

New York Times Bestseller

by J.A. Jance ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 2, 2019

Proficient but eminently predictable. Amid all the time shifts and embedded backstories, the most surprising feature is how...

A convicted killer’s list of five people he wants dead runs the gamut from the wife he’s already had murdered to franchise heroine Ali Reynolds.

Back in the day, women came from all over to consult Santa Clarita fertility specialist Dr. Edward Gilchrist. Many of them left his care happily pregnant, never dreaming that the father of the babies they carried was none other than the physician himself, who donated his own sperm rather than that of the handsome, athletic, disease-free men pictured in his scrapbook. When Alexandra Munsey’s son, Evan, is laid low by the kidney disease he’s inherited from his biological father and she returns to Gilchrist in search of the donor’s medical records, the roof begins to fall in on him. By the time it’s done falling, he’s serving a life sentence in Folsom Prison for commissioning the death of his wife, Dawn, the former nurse and sometime egg donor who’d turned on him. With nothing left to lose, Gilchrist tattoos himself with the initials of five people he blames for his fall: Dawn; Leo Manuel Aurelio, the hit man he’d hired to dispose of her; Kaitlyn Todd, the nurse/receptionist who took Dawn’s place; Alex Munsey, whose search for records upset his apple cart; and Ali Reynolds, the TV reporter who’d helped put Alex in touch with the dozen other women who formed the Progeny Project because their children looked just like hers. No matter that Ali’s been out of both California and the news business for years; Gilchrist and his enablers know that revenge can’t possibly be served too cold. Wonder how far down that list they’ll get before Ali, aided once more by Frigg, the methodical but loose-cannon AI first introduced in Duel to the Death (2018), turns on them?

BLESSING OF THE LOST GIRLS

DRAGON TEETH

by Michael Crichton ‧ RELEASE DATE: May 23, 2017

Falls short of Crichton’s many blockbusters, but fun reading nonetheless, especially for those interested in the early days...

In 1876, professor Edward Cope takes a group of students to the unforgiving American West to hunt for dinosaur fossils, and they make a tremendous discovery.

William Jason Tertullius Johnson, son of a shipbuilder and beneficiary of his father’s largess, isn’t doing very well at Yale when he makes a bet with his archrival (because every young man has one): accompany “the bone professor” Othniel Marsh to the West to dig for dinosaur fossils or pony up $1,000, but Marsh will only let Johnson join if he has a skill they can use. They need a photographer, so Johnson throws himself into the grueling task of learning photography, eventually becoming proficient. When Marsh and the team leave without him, he hitches a ride with another celebrated paleontologist, Marsh’s bitter rival, Edward Cope. Despite warnings about Indian activity, into the Judith badlands they go. It’s a harrowing trip: they weather everything from stampeding buffalo to back-breaking work, but it proves to be worth it after they discover the teeth of what looks to be a giant dinosaur, and it could be the discovery of the century if they can only get them back home safely. When the team gets separated while transporting the bones, Johnson finds himself in Deadwood and must find a way to get the bones home—and stay alive doing it. The manuscript for this novel was discovered in Crichton’s ( Pirate Latitudes , 2009, etc.) archives by his wife, Sherri, and predates Jurassic Park (1990), but if readers are looking for the same experience, they may be disappointed: it’s strictly formulaic stuff. Famous folk like the Earp brothers make appearances, and Cope and Marsh, and the feud between them, were very real, although Johnson is the author’s own creation. Crichton takes a sympathetic view of American Indians and their plight, and his appreciation of the American West, and its harsh beauty, is obvious.

A Girl Named Anna

Lizzy barber.

September 3, 2019

Winner of the  Daily Mail  First Novel Competition,  A Girl Named Anna by Lizzy Barber is a psychologically riveting read that introduces Lizzy Barber as an outstanding new voice in suspense fiction.

British author Lizzy Barber makes her fiction debut with the suspenseful novel A Girl Named Anna . Barber, a former English major from Cambridge University, had concentrated mostly on food prior to this release, as she not only works as a marketing professional for a restaurant but is also married to a food writer. Like myself, I hope you will be glad that Barber ventured into the realm of fiction, as her debut effort is quite good.

We can give thanks to Gillian Flynn—specifically her release of the international bestseller Gone Girl —for making the multiple-character narrative a regularly used gimmick in modern fiction. This works especially well with mystery or thriller novels as they allow readers to digest multiple character perspectives in an effort to puzzle out what is actually going on with the narrative.

One of the pivotal characters in A Girl Named Anna sums up the novel perfectly when she states, “If you had two paths in front of you, one you knew was dark and the other had even the smallest promise of light, which would you choose?” That sounds like a morality lesson of the basest order, and it succinctly sums up how the somewhat controversial choices made by certain characters in this novel have led us down the dual-narrative path towards an inevitable confrontation with both the darkness and the light.

Anna is our title character, and she lives a complicated life. She is alone with her mother, a woman so devout that calling her a religious fanatic would be a huge understatement. Her mother tells her that her father died before she ever knew him. Now, at the age of 18, Anna is finally beginning to seek answers to questions that have always plagued her. The biggest question is why she always feels like she had another past—different from the one she is currently living—and that she may be someone else.

The other narrative comes from Rosie. She lost her younger sister, Emily, 15 years earlier, and she has never stopped believing that she would one day find her again. Even when the rest of her family had given up hope, Rosie continues to use every avenue she can to search for Emily.

The answers may lie in both of their memories of the Florida amusement park Astroland. This was where Emily was abducted—or lost. Anna cannot understand why her mother will not let her go there to celebrate her 18th birthday. As both young women continue to pursue what happened at Astroland, doors will be opened that take each of them down unpredictable paths.

It is difficult to reveal much else without giving too much away. I can say that the novel felt like it could have been wrapped up a little sooner. However, as a debut novel, it was very satisfying. When religion and all the negative connotations that come with religious fanaticism come to the forefront, it reminded me of Stephen King’s debut novel, Carrie , which also had a mother-daughter relationship that was fueled by an unhealthy religious belief. A Girl Named Anna is a gripping read that will make you turn the pages to uncover all the answers the two lead characters are so desperately seeking.

A Girl Named Anna

A Girl Named Anna

A Girl Named Anna begins to question her whole world after visiting the Astroland amusement park.

“Today is my eighteenth birthday and, for the first time, I am lying to my mother.”

So says Anna before sneaking off from her religious mamma to visit the park with her boyfriend. Meanwhile, Rosie misses her sister who was three when she disappeared from the same park fifteen years ago.

It is hard not to see Piper Laurie, from the original Carrie movie, playing the bible-thumping mamma of Anna. Just a few more blocks down the crazy street, if you get my meaning. The missing child plot is identical to several other, better, books I’ve read recently. Overall, I didn’t see much originality in A Girl Named Anna , though the writing was good. I would read the next tale by this debut thriller writer. 3 stars.

Thanks to MIRA, Harlequin Books and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

She begins her struggle to understand what is happening to her.

  7. A Girl Named Anna by Lizzy Barber #bookreview #tarheelreader

A Girl Named Anna is written with the emotion you'd expect in a missing child story. It was even more powerful to hear the story in two voices. Even though initially the plot may seem obvious, the details and how it's unveiled slowly add to the suspense of the narrative.
