The Difference Between Uncoated, Gloss, and Matte Paper Finishing

Two people writing on a uncoated flyer

Choosing a paper type for your print project is a vital step in creating successful print marketing. The paper finish can invoke feelings and assist in the storytelling of your product. But let’s start by understanding the difference between the three main paper finishings that you’ll find at your print shop.

The most important thing to know is that the difference between uncoated, matte, and gloss is primarily the amount of coating that is applied to the paper. The chart below gives you an idea of roughly how much coating is applied to each paper type.

paper finishing coating chart

The following picture was taken with all 4 paper coatings to get an idea of what the differences are between coated paper vs uncoated paper. The descriptions below will help explain the differences that might not be noticeably apparent in the photograph. But to put it simply, the more coating added during production creates a more reflective surface.

Uncoated vs Matte vs Gloss paper difference between matte and uncoated paper

Uncoated Paper

Uncoated paper is exactly what it sounds like – paper that has no extra coating or paper finishing. Since there is no coating, there is no glare on the surface. This makes it ideal for prints that have a lot of text or reading materials. Since there is no coating, this is the most porous paper, which is the best for smudge-less writing with the widest range of pens and pencils when compared to the other finishes. All bond stock paper is uncoated. Color copies , black and white copies , and flyer printing typically use uncoated paper for the low cost.

Matte Coated Paper

Matte paper has a light coating that provides a boost to the contrast to images, but results in little glare. In the picture above, that the matte coating did not provide much glare when the photo was taken. The matte coating provides a smoother presentation than an uncoated sheet, and softer than the appearance of a glossy sheet. Matte sheets are good for enhancing visual designs with a more subdued layout and color set without having a lot of glare which glossy coatings suffer from. Pen ink will not smear on matte coating, which makes it the ideal choice for journals and calendars .

Coated paper vs uncoated paper, Matte and gloss paper are coated sheets compared next to each other.

Gloss Coated Paper

Gloss coated paper provides a lot of shine, which results in a higher contrast and color gamut than other papers. This coating is good for full color images where the color needs to “pop”. This coating gives a very nice finish and professional look for marketing materials or any other kinds of prints that want to show off the color. Book printing is the most common materials that use gloss paper, usually 60lb or 80lb for magazine paper.

UV Gloss Coating

UV Gloss coating is our premium coating that makes pictures really stand out. It really enhances color contrast and makes those vibrant colors pop out, more so than regular gloss. As you can see from the picture above, our UV coating provides a much greater shine than our gloss papers.

Unlike the other options, UV Gloss is not a paper type. Instead it is an additional coating that is added to a gloss or matte paper type after printing. UV gloss cannot be added to Text paper types. So if you need the additional glossy coater on your prints, choose a Cover stock paper type. Add UV Gloss to the covers your print magazine and catalog printing for a more professional look and feel.

The uv gloss and the gloss coated, which one last the test of time, that is against heat and mist?

Hello Samson! UV Gloss is an additional coating applied to a printed product for extra protection against outside elements. Gloss coated paper does not offer additional protection. Depending on the use of the product, the best protective coating that Printivity offers is gloss or matte lamination. Hi Natalie, could you recommended what would be the be print method for Supermarket Wobblers? Considering the bright fluorescent lights, but still wanting the images to stand out?

A light-weight gloss coated paper would probably be best for a shelf wobbler. If you would like to receive complimentary paper samples from Printivity, please email [email protected] with your shipping address.

Epson Ultra Premium Presentation Paper Matte?

I was in Best Buy this morning to check prices on 8.5 x 11 photo paper, and saw one pristine box of 13 x 19 Epson Ultra Premium Presentation Paper Matte 5* - 50 sheets for $10.99. Seemed like a major bargain, but I haven't priced it as I've never used that paper or printed that big. But I have a new Epson R1800 printer. Has anyone ever used this paper and can you comment on it ?

Thanks... carolyn -- Ranger a.k.a chammett http://www.pbase.com/chammett

I found a sample of this paper I got in a pack of samples from Atlex, an online paper source. Their site said it was formerlly called Enhanced Matte . Printed up an 8 x 10 and I'd lgive int an "o.k." but not just really exciting if paper can be called "exciting"

So I answered my questiaon for ME.... but if anyone has opinions, I'd love to know what others think. It might be nice paper for baby or soft fuzzy pet pictures, but not sure what else.

It has also gone under the name of Archival Matte in the UK.

It's pretty good stuff and I use it a lot, especially for any b/w. It also looks great under glass.

Thanks Alan. I have no idea whether the $10.99 USD price for 50 sheets of 13 x 19 paper was good or not, as I could find no comparison locally or online, but it sounded good for that much paper. However, I can't imagine printing 50 13 x 19 matte images in my lifetiime !

carolyn Ranger a.k.a chammett http://www.pbase.com/chammett

I bought some of the 8 1/2 x 11 Ultra a few weeks ago and it sure looked and felt like the Enhanced - and I have been told Enhanced = Ultar.

Checked Altex.com which usually has fair prices - Enhanced 13 x 19 50 sheets were $35.99

Ultra Premium price @ best buy (online) is $55.95.

It is a very economical paper, good image quality, deep blacks, smooth surface, bright white surface. There are some downsides, however. With some printers the deeper values (darker tones) show an unpleasant, uneven mottling effect. The paper contains OBAs which fade shortly, leaving the paper quite yellow in comparison.

(I found this out when comparing a sheet that I had accidentally left half-sandwiched between two boxes for two months. So, one half was exposed to light for a few hours every day; the other half was not exposed to light at all. After 2 months I pulled the sheet fully out and found that there was a clear dividing line between the two halves, with the exposed half clearly yellow compared to the other half.) -- Eric Chan http://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan/photos/ http://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan/dp/Epson3800/index.html

That is an excellent price if they didn't mis-label it. Even the letter-size paper costs more than $10.99.

I thought $10.99 for 50 sheets of 13 x 19 sounded awfully cheap... even if it was 8.5 x 12 rather than the larger format. I haven't bought anything but lots of Premium Glossy which I like for albums of my 8 x 10's, so I'm a newbie at both the 13 x 19 size as well as the paper type.

I did notice when I printed a test sheet from my sample box of Epson papers, that the Premium Matte seemed to have less intensity or saturation using the same settings I use and from which I get excellent color matching on glossy, but that could be the difference in matte and gloss papers and the gloss optimizer on the glossy paper. It was not a critical difference in my subject matter (Kenyan elephants which can be any color from gray-tan in color to dusty reddish - brown depending on how much dust they've thrown on themselves l) . I would have to make some adjustments in CS3 if I were gong to anything color-critical with that paper I think.

So, has anyone noticed that the matte papes take color slightly differetnly ?

There is definitely a big difference in color appearance between matte and non-matte papers. First off, the matte papers are basically free of glare; that already makes a big difference in appearance! But also matte papers tend to have a more restricted color gamut and contrast range. These are fundamental differences that should definitely be accounted for when doing image processing, or at least when deciding which paper to use for printing specific images. -- Eric Chan http://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan/photos/ http://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan/dp/Epson3800/index.html

So what type images do you think are best used on Matte ? I see b/w and maybe some portraits or "soft subjects" like pets . I dug out a sample of Matte that came in a sample pack of Epson papers, and printed a group of elephants on it. The effect was very nice, but ti seemed to lack "punch" of a dramatic image or an image on glossy paper.

Images that have deep, dark saturated colors that need that extra "punch" could benefit from a luster, glossy paper. Images whose subject matter suggest gloss, shininess, or reflectivity can often benefit from gloss, too (e.g., images of machinery, etc.). But it comes down to personal taste. For many of my color images I prefer a smooth or lightly textured matte paper. This is especially true for New England fall foliage images. In most cases I really dislike the reflections from gloss/luster papers and often will choose a matte paper solely for this reason. These days, my default is matte unless there is a specific image need for a glossy/luster. -- Eric Chan http://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan/photos/ http://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan/dp/Epson3800/index.html

Carolyn, it is good to read your post.

Probably 85% of my Photos are on Epson Enhanced Matte Photo paper. It now (some places) has a different name. I use the Epson 2200 and two R800 printers.

When I have an image that I "specifically" want to emphasize the Shadow details, I will process that image for the specific effects. I have had absolutely NO problems in that regard with Matte Photos....

I will acknowledge that I am NOT a fan of Glossy. I got all of that type that I wanted when using the Wet Dark Room, Ferro type Plates, and the "squeegee" (spell ?). Also, glossy seems too be much like the "drug store" type prints. However, this is NOT intended to criticize others that like glossy -- There are good reasons for the use of glossy as needed.

I do print a few images (small size -- 4 x 6) on InkJetArt Micro Ceramic Luster paper which is nice and also have a good supply of 8 1/2 x 11 inch that I occasionally use -- but none larger. The 13 x 19 box of 50 sheets price you mentioned would be a real bargain.

I have printed MANY (primarily Family) images on 13 x 19 and a few on two sheets of 13 x 19 then combined the 2 parts when mounting. These were scans form Hasselblad Medium Format (both Color and B/W) negatives and they are really nice and it almost seems like they are there in real "life size".

Epson Sublimation Paper Settings – Which ones should you use for your printer?

by Jeff Fowler | Nov 3, 2022 | Epson Printer Tutorials | 0 comments

what is premium presentation paper matte

Howdy fellow sublimation peeps! In today’s post, we’ll be focusing on some that few people understand but it makes a HUGE difference in your print quality: Paper Settings.

Most sublimation users just use Premium Presentation Matte for the most ink, but what if you have extra ink causing issues? Going to a lower setting really seems to adversely effect the color. In our test today, we’ll waste our time, ink and paper to test so you don’t have to!

Why do paper setting affect my output?

Paper settings directly change how much ink the printer is putting down based on the amount the printer expects to be absorbed by the print. The best analogy I can think of involves printing on strange objects on different ends of the spectrum. You’re were pouring black ink onto a porous, absorbent object, such as a sponge. How much ink do you think it would take to make the sponge has a nice, crisp black color? Probably quite a bit. Now, let’s contrast that with something non-porous, such as glass. How much ink do you think it would take for the ink to show up on glass? Not much at all, as the glass isn’t absorbing the ink. Make sense?

While this seems irrelevant to the matter of sublimation, quite the opposite is true. By manipulating the paper settings, we can “trick” the printer into putting more ink down on the paper. More ink in the sublimation paper allows for more ink to be released into the substrate, allowing for much more vivid colors.

What are the different paper settings?

In this “experiment”, we’re going to print one 8.5″ x 11″ of each design. As a control, we will use all of the same settings (High Quality, High Speed Printing Off,

The design will feature a color chart and solid black text. This will be a test of how good the colors are and we will see how prone the setting is to streaks/wheel marks/etc. We will grade each one by comparing how vivid the colors are and how much ink is left in the paper.

what is premium presentation paper matte

If you notice, there’s a marker to avoid confusion later on. I have a feeling this will be important. These will be printed with my Epson WF-7720 printer. Once printed, we will be pressing on 100% polyester fabric, the smoothest I could find.

The results were quite shocking. Despite having 13 different print setting, there were only 4 different “groups”

  • Ultra Premium Photo Paper Glossy
  • Premium Photo Paper Glossy
  • Photo Paper Glossy
  • Premium Photo Paper Semi-Gloss

I feel like the Heavy Ink is just asking from problems with any type of saturated image, particularly black. This setting results in wheel marks in EVERY test print. I wouldn’t recommend using it. In addition, the blacks have a noticeable red tint when using any of these paper settings.

Heavy Ink with Reduced Red in Black

  • Premium Presentation Paper Matte

This was similar to “Heavy Ink” but without the red in the black. The black had a more pure color and looked fantastic.

  • Plain Paper / Bright White
  • High Quality Plain Paper

The light settings, including one of my favorites: High Quality Plain Paper looked pretty good, but the dark color were noticeably more muted vs the “Heavy Ink” settings

Medium Ink with Reduced Red in Black

  • Premium Presentation Paper Matte – With Standard Instead of High Quality

This may be my Goldilocks setting on hard substrates going forward. I feel like this will reduce a lot of shadowing while maintaining a good black color on most substrates. If you are running into wheel marks when printing, clean your rollers and switch the Premium Presentation Paper Matte with Standard instead of High Quality.

I did this one as a personal test, because I feel like it will be in-between High Quality Plain Paper and Premium Presentation Matte.

After pressing and testing for hours, here’s the data I came up with:

What should I use?

Based on those results, you can always get the most vivid colors while maintaining the best black from the Premium Presentation Paper Matte. If that’s the case, why not just use it all the time? Well, with sublimation, there’s a point where the substrate was absorbed the maximum amount of ink that it possibly can. Anything after this point adds addition ink, that has to go somewhere. Extra ink can often lead to blurry or streaky images, particularly on simple prints.

Here’s my general rule of thumb: I use  Premium Presentation Paper Matte  UNLESS the design is simple (text only) AND heavy on black saturation. If that the case, you can greatly reduce the chances of streaks, wheel marks, and other print issues by switching to  Premium Presentation Paper Matte, but with High Quality turned to standard quality.  If you’re still running into issues, you can use any of the following paper settings: Plain Paper / Bright White, Letterhead, Recycled, Color, Preprinted, High Quality Plain Paper, or Envelope,

  13. Epson Ultra Premium Presentation Paper Matte?

I was in Best Buy this morning to check prices on 8.5 x 11 photo paper, and saw one pristine box of 13 x 19 Epson Ultra Premium Presentation Paper Matte 5* - 50 sheets for $10.99. 19. Premium Presentation Paper Matte paper setting needed on my 2720

You can actually leave it on Standard print and choose either the presentation matte or the premium matte. Honestly both looked the same to me.
