Marketing research requires both primary and secondary market research. But what does that mean and what are the main differences?

Primary market research takes in information directly from customers, usually as participants in surveys. Usually, it is consisted of:

  • Exploratory Primary Research – This type of research helps to identify possible problem areas, and it’s not focused on discovering specific information about customers. As with any research, exploratory primary research should be conducted carefully. Researchers need to craft an interviewing or surveying plan, and gather enough respondents to ensure reasonable levels of statistical reliability.
  • Specific Primary Research – This type of research is one of the best ways to approach a problem because it relies on existing customer data. Specific research provides a deeper, more thorough understanding of the problem and its potential solutions. Define your buyer persona

Identify a persona group to engage, prepare research questions for your market research participants, list your primary competitors, summarize your findings.

The job of a marketing persona is to describe your ideal customer and to tell you what they want, what motivates them, what frustrates them, and what limits them. Finding out these things means you have a better chance of designing your products, services, marketing messages, and brand around real customers. There is no one right way to create a buyer persona, though.

For example, if you’re in an industry focused on education, you could include things like:

  • Educational level
  • Education background

It’s recommended that you create 3-5 buyer personas for your products, based on your ideal customer.

This should be a representative sample of your target customers so you can better understand their behavior. You want to find people who fit both your target personas and who represent the broader demographic of your market. Don’t ask questions that imply a yes or no answer. Instead, use open questions. For example, if you are researching customers about yogurt products, you could ask them: „ What have you heard about yogurt ?” or “ What do you think of yogurt ?“.

Avoid questions that use numbers, such as “ How many times a week do you eat yogurt ?”

Avoid questions that suggest a set of mutually exclusive answers, such as “ Do you like yogurt for breakfast, lunch, or dinner ?”

Avoid questions that imply a scale, such as “ Do you like chocolate-flavored yogurt ?”

Market researchers sometimes call one company the top competitor, another middle competitor, and the third one small competitor. However you classify them, you want to identify at least three companies in each category. Now, for each business on your list, list its key characteristics. For example, if your business sells running shoes, a key characteristic might be the product’s quality.

Next, make a list of your small business’s competitive advantages. These include the unique qualities or features of your business that make it the best choice of customers for the products or services it offers. 9.2: Elements of a market research report

The market research report marks the culmination of the project, but it also marks the beginning of the recommendations’ implementation and action phase. Having established the decision problem, chosen a research method, identified a target population sample, collected and analyzed data accurately, and, hopefully, produced sound findings, the next step is to prepare the report and possibly present it to a group of decision makers. Usually, this involves writing a report and, occasionally, creating a slide show based on the report.

The six fundamental components of a research report are as follows:

  • Title Page: This section provides an overview of the report, including its purpose, who requested it, when and how it was conducted.
  • Table of Contents: This section lists all of the major sections of the report along with any graphs or charts, along with the page numbers where they are located.
  • Executive Summary: This section provides a brief summary of all the details in the report, suitable for both executives and nonexecutives who may not have the time to read the entire document.
  • Methodology and Limitations: The methodology section of the report explains the technical details of how the research was designed and conducted. The section explains, for example, how the data was collected and by whom, the size of the sample, how it was chosen, and whom or what it consisted of (e.g., the number of women versus men or children versus adults). It also includes information about the statistical techniques used to analyze the data. Every study has errors—sampling errors, interviewer errors, and so forth. The methodology section should explain these details, so decision makers can consider their overall impact. The margin of error is the overall tendency of the study to be off kilter—that is, how far it could have gone wrong in either direction. Remember how newscasters present polls before an election? They always say, “This candidate is ahead 48 to 44 percent, plus or minus 2 percent.” That “plus or minus” is the margin of error. The larger the margin of error is, the less likely the results of the study are accurate. The margin of error needs to be included in the methodology section.
  • Findings: If there is additional research or secondary data that supports the study’s conclusions, it can be included in the findings section to help demonstrate that the study accomplished its goals. The findings section is an expanded, more detailed version of the executive summary that provides additional information about the statistics that the research uncovered and that support the study’s conclusions.
  • Recommendations. The recommendations section should include a description of the course of action you believe should be followed in light of the research’s findings as well as the project’s objectives. Examples

When preparing the report, it is important to keep the readership in mind. 5 Things to Remember When Writing a Market Research Report

There is nothing more embarrassing for a researcher than to hear a client say “…this doesn’t really address the business questions that we set out to answer.” This is more common an occurrence in research reporting than most of us would care to admit. But unfortunately, much report writing these days falls short of expectations for those on the client side. This is likely due to more emphasis on methodology or analytic technique at the expense of clear graphics, creative story-telling and actionable direction.

What often happens during the report-writing process is that market researchers have their direct research client in mind. They neglect the fact that their direct contact must present these findings to the ultimate stakeholder in the process — someone in senior management or the head of marketing who does not function in the research realm.

We need to take conscious steps to break out of our little bubble to avoid some of the lingo that is prevalent in research circles. You know what I mean if you’ve ever found yourself presenting your findings to marketing folks. While peppering them with terms such as “mean,” “monadic,” “DK/NS,” “latent class,” and the like, you suddenly notice the deer-in-the-headlights reaction. Worse yet, your audience’s eyes glaze over completely. These terms are foreign to many marketers and, frankly, most of them couldn’t care less about such things. They simply want a viable solution to the particular business need they set out to address.

So, when writing a research report for my clients it helps me to keep a few things in mind….

Speak to Marketers in Their Language

Focus on what marketers care most about — getting customers, keeping customers, and increasing their share of the customer’s wallet. So tell them what is meaningful to them….

  • How to position their brand
  • How best to price it
  • Who their best prospects are and how to reach them
  • What message should they be communicating
  • Who are their most loyal and valuable customers
  • How do they keep them loyal to their service or brand

Net, net — put some Marketing-Speak into your report, and leave out the Research-speak.

Tell a good story

A good report tells a good story. So, how do you tell a compelling story? Start by getting organized!

  • Develop an analytic plan that focuses on business issues and objectives — the questions that need to be answered.
  • Outline how the questions will be.
  • Once the data is in, all team members should know how the data relates to those question, and they can craft the best story together.

Remember, every page in the report should contribute to the story! If something doesn’t contour well with your story, stick it in the Appendix. How many hundred-page reports have you been subjected to where the charts are all in the same order as the questionnaire? Where is the story?

It’s also important to stick closely to your analytic plan when crafting your story. The analytic plan is what helps to keep everyone focused on why the research was conducted in the first place.

Insightful Headlines and Bullets

What I also find helpful in getting my arms around the story is to write effective bullets and headlines for the data presented. Too many people think an insight is reiterating the numbers that are in the charts. Remember, anyone can read the numbers on a chart – our job, as researchers, is to pull the deeper insights from seemingly obvious data.

Be Creative and Have a Llittle Fun

Creativity also comes into play! Package the story in a creative way. No one wants to see rows and rows of data. Make the report visually appealing so you don’t intimidate those who are going to be using the findings to help drive strategy. Avoid too much text and too many numbers.

And, don’t be afraid to insert some humor here and there. It reminds your clients that you are human and helps to lighten the tone and keep things relaxed.

Get to the Heart of It

And finally, probably the hardest part of the report process for any researcher is to get straight to the heart of it… what is the story – conclusions, implications, and recommendations. Go to the next step to tell them what the data MEANS, and what they might consider doing to maximize their investment.

And there is nothing sweeter to a market researcher’s ears than to hear a client voice saying, “Thanks, this really addresses the business questions that we set out to answer!”

Researchers rely on quantitative data, and online surveys provide quick responses compared to the more traditional offline methods. You can collect large amounts of data within minutes from anywhere in the world.

2. Interviews

Face-to-face or personal interviews are a more traditional way of doing marketing research. It is a slow and more expensive way of collecting responses. Researchers doing large scale marketing research do not prefer this method to collect a large number of responses. Interviews are conducted both in-person and on the telephone (CATI).

Personal interviews may not be widely used but play a significant role in understanding precisely what the respondent feels. You can record more than just verbal responses and understand the customer better. Often, when two humans interact with each other, more information is shared because of the dialogue. Personal interviews are useful in small-scale studies, where the researcher wants to interview a specific group of local respondents. CATI’s are helpful when the respondent base is more expansive.

3. Focus groups

Focus groups or online focus groups involve several respondents who participate in discussions about a particular topic. A researcher conducts focus groups to obtain richer information. The main reason for a focus group is to hold a dialogue between various people on a particular topic of interest. Unlike interviews, focus group members are allowed to interact with each other and influence one another.

It is no secret that focus groups are hugely impactful in decision making. Researchers gain a lot of information by organizing focus groups. Often, focus groups bring up issues not foreseen by researchers. Online or video focus groups have a broad reach, and many organizations have now started creating and nurturing research communities for better respondent handling and data gathering. 4. Observation

Observation, though not popular and widely used, gives intuitive feedback. 4. Analyze the data

A Standard Approach to Research Inquiries

Marketing research is a useful and necessary tool for helping marketers and an organization’s executive leadership make wise decisions. Carrying out marketing research can involve highly specialized skills that go deeper than the information outlined in this module. However, it is important for any marketer to be familiar with the basic procedures and techniques of marketing research.

It is very likely that at some point a marketing professional will need to supervise an internal marketing research activity or to work with an outside marketing research firm to conduct a research project. Managers who understand the research function can do a better job of framing the problem and critically appraising the proposals made by research specialists. They are also in a better position to evaluate their findings and recommendations.

Periodically marketers themselves need to find solutions to marketing problems without the assistance of marketing research specialists inside or outside the company. If you are familiar with the basic procedures of marketing research, you can supervise and even conduct a reasonably satisfactory search for the information needed.

Steps of the Marketing Research Process: 1. Identify the problem (this includes the problem to solve, project objectives, and research questions). 2. Develop the research plan (this includes information needed, research & sales methods). 3. Conduct research (this includes secondary data review, primary data collection, suitable methods and techniques. 4. Analyze and report findings (this includes data formatting and analysis, interpretation of results, reports and recommendations. 5. Take action (this includes thought and planning, evaluation of options, course adjustment and execution.

Step 1: Identify the Problem

The first step for any marketing research activity is to clearly identify and define the problem you are trying to solve. You start by stating the marketing or business problem you need to address and for which you need additional information to figure out a solution. Next, articulate the objectives for the research: What do you want to understand by the time the research project is completed? What specific information, guidance, or recommendations need to come out of the research in order to make it a worthwhile investment of the organization’s time and money?

It’s important to share the problem definition and research objectives with other team members to get their input and further refine your understanding of the problem and what is needed to solve it. At times, the problem you really need to solve is not the same problem that appears on the surface. Collaborating with other stakeholders helps refine your understanding of the problem, focus your thinking, and prioritize what you hope to learn from the research. Prioritizing your objectives is particularly helpful if you don’t have the time or resources to investigate everything you want.

To flesh out your understanding of the problem, it’s useful to begin brainstorming actual research questions you want to explore. What are the questions you need to answer in order to get to the research outcomes? What is the missing information that marketing research will help you find? The goal at this stage is to generate a set of preliminary, big-picture questions that will frame your research inquiry. You will revisit these research questions later in the process, but when you’re getting started, this exercise helps clarify the scope of the project, whom you need to talk to, what information may already be available, and where to look for the information you don’t yet have.

Applied Example: Marketing Research for Bookends

To illustrate the marketing research process, let’s return to Uncle Dan and his ailing bookstore, Bookends. You need a lot of information if you’re going to help Dan turn things around, so marketing research is a good idea. You begin by identifying the problem and then work to set down your research objectives and initial research questions:

Step 2: Develop a Research Plan

Once you have a problem definition, research objectives, and a preliminary set of research questions, the next step is to develop a research plan. Essential to this plan is identifying precisely what information you need to answer your questions and achieve your objectives. Do you need to understand customer opinions about something? Are you looking for a clearer picture of customer needs and related behaviors? Do you need sales, spending, or revenue data? Do you need information about competitors’ products, or insight about what will make prospective customers notice you? When do need the information, and what’s the time frame for getting it? What budget and resources are available?

Once you have clarified what kind of information you need and the timing and budget for your project, you can develop the research design. This details how you plan to collect and analyze the information you’re after. Some types of information are readily available through  secondary research and secondary data sources. Secondary research analyzes information that has already been collected for another purpose by a third party, such as a government agency, an industry association, or another company. Other types of information need to from talking directly to customers about your research questions. This is known as primary research , which collects primary data captured expressly for your research inquiry.   Marketing research projects may include secondary research, primary research, or both.

Depending on your objectives and budget, sometimes a small-scale project will be enough to get the insight and direction you need. At other times, in order to reach the level of certainty or detail required, you may need larger-scale research involving participation from hundreds or even thousands of individual consumers. The research plan lays out the information your project will capture—both primary and secondary data—and describes what you will do with it to get the answers you need. (Note: You’ll learn more about data collection methods and when to use them later in this module.)

Your data collection plan goes hand in hand with your analysis plan. Different types of analysis yield different types of results. The analysis plan should match the type of data you are collecting, as well as the outcomes your project is seeking and the resources at your disposal. Simpler research designs tend to require simpler analysis techniques. More complex research designs can yield powerful results, such as understanding causality and trade-offs in customer perceptions. However, these more sophisticated designs can require more time and money to execute effectively, both in terms of data collection and analytical expertise.

The research plan also specifies who will conduct the research activities, including data collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting on results. At times a singlehanded marketing manager or research specialist runs the entire research project. At other times, a company may contract with a marketing research analyst or consulting firm to conduct the research. In this situation, the marketing manager provides supervisory oversight to ensure the research delivers on expectations.

Finally, the research plan indicates who will interpret the research findings and how the findings will be reported. This part of the research plan should consider the internal audience(s) for the research and what reporting format will be most helpful. Often, senior executives are primary stakeholders, and they’re anxious for marketing research to inform and validate their choices. When this is the case, getting their buy-in on the research plan is recommended to make sure that they are comfortable with the approach and receptive to the potential findings.

Applied Example: A Bookends Research Plan

You talk over the results of your problem identification work with Dan. He thinks you’re on the right track and wants to know what’s next. You explain that the next step is to put together a detailed plan for getting answers to the research questions.

Dan is enthusiastic, but he’s also short on money. You realize that such a financial constraint will limit what’s possible, but with Dan’s help you can do something worthwhile. Below is the research plan you sketch out:

Types of data needed 1) Demographics and attitudes of current Bookends customers; 2) current customers’ spending patterns; 3) metro area demographics (to determine types of people who aren’t coming to the store)

Step 3: Conduct the Research

Conducting research can be a fun and exciting part of the marketing research process. After struggling with the gaps in your knowledge of market dynamics—which led you to embark on a marketing research project in the first place—now things are about to change. Conducting research begins to generate information that helps answer your urgent marketing questions.

Typically data collection begins by reviewing any existing research and data that provide some information or insight about the problem. As a rule, this is secondary research. Prior research projects, internal data analyses, industry reports, customer-satisfaction survey results, and other information sources may be worthwhile to review. Even though these resources may not answer your research questions fully, they may further illuminate the problem you are trying to solve. Secondary research and data sources are nearly always cheaper than capturing new information on your own. Your marketing research project should benefit from prior work wherever possible.

After getting everything you can from secondary research, it’s time to shift attention to primary research, if this is part of your research plan. Primary research involves asking questions and then listening to and/or observing the behavior of the target audience you are studying. In order to generate reliable, accurate results, it is important to use proper scientific methods for primary research data collection and analysis. This includes identifying the right individuals and number of people to talk to, using carefully worded surveys or interview scripts, and capturing data accurately.

Without proper techniques, you may inadvertently get bad data or discover bias in the responses that distorts the results and points you in the wrong direction. The module on Marketing Research Techniques discusses these issues in further detail, since the procedures for getting reliable data vary by research method.

Applied Example: Getting the Data on Bookends

Dan is on board with the research plan, and he’s excited to dig into the project. You start with secondary data, getting a dump of Dan’s sales data from the past two years, along with related information: customer name, zip code, frequency of purchase, gender, date of purchase, and discounts/promotions (if any).

You visit the U.S. Census Bureau Web site to download demographic data about your metro area. The data show all zip codes in the area, along with population size, gender breakdown, age ranges, income, and education levels.

The next part of the project is customer-survey data. You work with Dan to put together a short survey about customer attitudes toward Bookends, how often and why they come, where else they spend money on books and entertainment, and why they go other places besides Bookends. Dan comes up with the great idea of offering a 5 percent discount coupon to anyone who completes the survey. Although it eats into his profits, this scheme gets more people to complete the survey and buy books, so it’s worth it.

For a couple of days, you and Dan take turns doing “man on the street” interviews (you interview the guy in the red hat, for instance). You find people who say they’ve never been to Bookends and ask them a few questions about why they haven’t visited the store, where else they buy books and other entertainment, and what might get them interested in visiting Bookends sometime. This is all a lot of work, but for a zero-budget project, it’s coming together pretty well.

Step 4: Analyze and Report Findings

Analyzing the data obtained in a market survey involves transforming the primary and/or secondary data into useful information and insights that answer the research questions. This information is condensed into a format to be used by managers—usually a presentation or detailed report.

Analysis starts with formatting, cleaning, and editing the data to make sure that it’s suitable for whatever analytical techniques are being used. Next, data are tabulated to show what’s happening: What do customers actually think? What’s happening with purchasing or other behaviors? How do revenue figures actually add up? Whatever the research questions, the analysis takes source data and applies analytical techniques to provide a clearer picture of what’s going on. This process may involve simple or sophisticated techniques, depending on the research outcomes required. Common analytical techniques include regression analysis to determine correlations between factors; conjoint analysis to determine trade-offs and priorities; predictive modeling to anticipate patterns and causality; and analysis of unstructured data such as Internet search terms or social media posts to provide context and meaning around what people say and do.

Good analysis is important because the interpretation of research data—the “so what?” factor—depends on it. The analysis combs through data to paint a picture of what’s going on. The interpretation goes further to explain what the research data mean and make recommendations about what managers need to know and do based on the research results. For example, what is the short list of key findings and takeaways that managers should remember from the research? What are the market segments you’ve identified, and which ones should you target?  What are the primary reasons your customers choose your competitor’s product over yours, and what does this mean for future improvements to your product?

Individuals with a good working knowledge of the business should be involved in interpreting the data because they are in the best position to identify significant insights and make recommendations from the research findings. Marketing research reports incorporate both analysis and interpretation of data to address the project objectives.

The final report for a marketing research project may be in written form or slide-presentation format, depending on organizational culture and management preferences. Often a slide presentation is the preferred format for initially sharing research results with internal stakeholders. Particularly for large, complex projects, a written report may be a better format for discussing detailed findings and nuances in the data, which managers can study and reference in the future.

Applied Example: Analysis and Insights for Bookends

Getting the data was a bit of a hassle, but now you’ve got it, and you’re excited to see what it reveals. Your statistician cousin, Marina, turns out to be a whiz with both the sales data and the census data. She identified several demographic profiles in the metro area that looked a lot like lifestyle segments. Then she mapped Bookends’ sales data into those segments to show who is and isn’t visiting Bookends. After matching customer-survey data to the sales data, she broke down the segments further based on their spending levels and reasons they visit Bookends.

Gradually a clearer picture of Bookends’ customers is beginning to emerge: who they are, why they come, why they don’t come, and what role Bookends plays in their lives. Right away, a couple of higher-priority segments—based on their spending levels, proximity, and loyalty to Bookends—stand out. You and your uncle are definitely seeing some possibilities for making the bookstore a more prominent part of their lives. You capture these insights as “recommendations to be considered” while you evaluate the right marketing mix for each of the new segments you’d like to focus on.

Step 5: Take Action

Once the report is complete, the presentation is delivered, and the recommendations are made, the marketing research project is over, right? Wrong.

What comes next is arguably the most important step of all: taking action based on your research results.

If your project has done a good job interpreting the findings and translating them into recommendations for the marketing team and other areas of the business, this step may seem relatively straightforward. When the research results validate a path the organization is already on, the “take action” step can galvanize the team to move further and faster in that same direction.

Things are not so simple when the research results indicate a new direction or a significant shift is advisable. In these cases, it’s worthwhile to spend time helping managers understand the research, explain why it is wise to shift course, and explain how the business will benefit from the new path. As with any important business decision, managers must think deeply about the new approach and carefully map strategies, tactics, and available resources to plan effectively. By making the results available and accessible to managers and their execution teams, the marketing research project can serve as an ongoing guide and touchstone to help the organization plan, execute, and adjust course as it works toward desired goals and outcomes.

It is worth mentioning that many marketing research projects are never translated into management action. Sometimes this is because the report is too technical and difficult to understand. In other cases, the research conclusions fail to provide useful insights or solutions to the problem, or the report writer fails to offer specific suggestions for translating the research findings into management strategy. These pitfalls can be avoided by paying due attention to the research objectives throughout the project and allocating sufficient time and resources to do a good job interpreting research results for those who will need to act on them.

Applied Example: Bookends’ New Customer Campaign

Your research findings and recommendations identified three segments for Bookends to focus on. Based on the demographics, lifestyle, and spending patterns found during your marketing research, you’re able to name them: 1) Bored Empty-Nesters, 2) Busy Families, and 3) Hipster Wannabes. Dan has a decent-sized clientele across all three groups, and they are pretty good spenders when they come in. But until now he hasn’t done much to purposely attract any of them.

With newly identified segments in focus, you and Dan begin brainstorming about a marketing mix to target each group. What types of books and other products would appeal to each one? What activities or events would bring them into the store? Are there promotions or particular messages that would induce them to buy at Bookends instead of Amazon or another bookseller? How will Dan reach and communicate with each group? And what can you do to bring more new customers into the store within these target groups?

Even though Bookends is a real-life project with serious consequences for your uncle Dan, it’s also a fun laboratory where you can test out some of the principles you’re learning in your marketing class. You’re figuring out quickly what it’s like to be a marketer.

Your business may spend a large amount of time and money on marketing. A smart business owner needs to assess how well their marketing plans are working. Specifically, your marketing efforts should get the attention of prospects. Eventually, a percentage of those prospects should become clients. You can perform market research to ask your clients about the effectiveness of your marketing message. Companies summarize the results of their research in a marketing report. Use the results of the report to make improvements in your business.

Evaluating Your Marketing Efforts

Step 1 Consider why you should perform market research and write a report.

  • Market research is the process of evaluating how well your marketing efforts are working. Specifically, does your marketing get the attention and interest of prospects? Are you converting enough of those prospects into clients?

Step 2 Identify your customer.

  • The more specific you can be about the identity of your customer, the better you can address their needs. Ask yourself, "Who am I targeting with this product?" and "What do they want?"
  • Look at your current customers. What's the average age? Gender? Education level? Personality? Lifestyle? Hobby? Occupation? Marriage status? Values? [3] X Research source
  • It is also important to know where your customers are coming from. Sources include search engines, social media, backlinks, referral traffic, and subscriber lists.

Step 3 Evaluate your customer’s problem.

  • For example, based on customer surveys and your industry knowledge, you uncover a customer problem. In this case, customers are losing time working or studying when their cell phone dies. If they forget their charger, they may lose hours of productivity.

Step 4 Detail your solution to the customer's problem.

  • For example, to solve the problem of dying cell phones, you create a phone charger built into a backpack. Your customers use backpacks to store computers and other work or school items. As a result, the worker or student can always charge their phone.

Step 5 Determine how well your product solves your customer's problem.

  • Over time, more customers buy your backpack and like using the built-in phone charger. These clients also believe that your product is different and better than competing products. Step 6 Identify your competitive advantage.

  • You continually add blog posts, articles and other content to your website. Adding content drives traffic to your site. Your content also keeps a percentage of your audience coming back for new content.
  • Your site offers an opt-in button for readers to subscribe to additional content that is emailed to them. This group gets a weekly email from you with new content links.
  • You have an attractive home page that includes a picture of someone using your backpack phone charger. The site allows the user to easily navigate to your content page and to web pages with product information.
  • You provide an e-commerce option for customers. Clients can buy your product online and receive their backpack in just 2-3 business days.
  • This should also include information about the sales channels used, like online, bricks & mortar, types of retailers, etc. Analyze how well your product is doing in each of these channels.

Step 8 Evaluate the effectiveness of your marketing.

  • Note your market share compared to competitors and market share trends. Are you gaining market share, losing it, or holding your own?

  • Keeping a close eye on your ROI is essential in order to stay abreast of how much you’re spending on marketing versus your return on that investment. Comparing what you’re spending on marketing versus your return on that investment is paramount to a good report.

Step 9 Summarize your findings for your marketing report.

  • Your report should include such items as definition of the market size, competitors and their marketing size, as well as estimates of market share.
  • You can use the market report to make changes to your marketing process. These changes can help you get more business from the time and money you spend on marketing.

Writing Your Executive Summary

Step 1 Think about the purpose of an executive summary.

  • The summary should include specific, numeric details from the rest of your report. These details should be condensed into bullet points and made prominent on the report. [8] X Research source

Step 2 Describe your company.

  • For example, if your backpack charging company had plans to expand into purse chargers or another similar product line, include these plans in your summary.
  • This should also include the sales channels being used by your business, as well as competitors and their sales channels. Are you different? Why? If not, do you have a competitive advantage that can be exploited in your marketing and sales efforts?

Step 3 Detail the objective of your research.

  • For example, you could be examining how well advertisements for your backpack are reaching college students, as they would be a likely audience for your product. If your ads are primarily reaching adults, who don't generally carry backpacks, this would be an issue to raise in your evaluation.

Step 5 Display marketing conversion data.

  • For example, if only 1 in 20 of your site's visitors actually buy one of your backpacks, you may want to reconsider the design of your websites, the ease of purchase, or the price of your product.

Step 6 Admit any data collection difficulties or incomplete sections.

Completing Your Marketing Report

Step 1 Forecast future trends.

  • You should also consider the fact that other competitors will arise if you are successful. Significant returns attract more competition, so if you don't have direct competitors now, rest assured that you will in the future. Have a plan in place to sustain your competitive advantage in spite of new entrants to the market.
  • For example, perhaps you perceive that college students may be carrying backpacks less often as they switch to an all-digital education. You could remark on how this will hurt your business and explain how you will respond to it.

Step 2 Calculate marketing return on investment.

  • To get the most out of your focus group, carefully plan the exact series of questions you want to ask. Your marketing report should include the questions you ask and why those questions are important to you.
  • In your survey or focus group, ask people how they first heard about your product. If you’re the backpack company, you might determine that most customers find you when they read a blog post or article that is posted to your site.
  • Document the results of both your surveys and your focus groups. Your report should provide both questions and responses. Give the reader the percentage of each type of response. For example, maybe 40% of respondents first learned about the backpack company by finding a blog post or article that was posted on the website.
  • Your qualitative research (survey and focus group questions) may be 5 to 10 pages of your report. The responses to those questions will also be 5 to 10 pages of material.

Step 4 Use your marketing report to make changes in your business.

  • Evaluate the extent to which your customers view your product as different and better than the competition. If they don’t see a difference, dig into their responses and find out why.
  • Say, for example, that most clients see you backpack and built-in phone charger as about the same as a competitor’s product. In fact, your phone charger includes a reinforced case that makes your charger much more durable.
  • Decide on some conclusions. You conclude, for example, that your website needs to emphasize that your phone charger case is much more durable than the competition.
  • You decide to make changes to your website and your other marketing communication pieces. After a period of time, you can assess these changes to see how they have impacted your market share. Perform more market research to evaluate the impact of your changes.

The 5-Step Marketing Research Process

With constant change being the norm in marketing and business, one thing remains the same: the need for marketing research. Marketing research is a helpful tool for organizations to better identify marketing strategies and evaluate business decisions using data. Just as you wouldn’t go on vacation without making any plans, you shouldn’t design marketing strategies without backing them with research and data. In short, the marketing research process is the backbone of informed business and marketing decisions. 

You might be surprised to hear that marketing research is one of the first things that organizations cut from their marketing budgets because of the high time (and sometimes monetary) investment. This is not the best decision, especially when your company is planning to launch a new product or venturing into a new market. As some savvy startups have learned, marketing research doesn't have to be expensive if you do it right and follow the right process. 

Let’s review best practices when going through the five-step marketing research process:

1. Define the Problem or Opportunity

The most important part of the marketing research process is defining the problem. In order to do any research and collect data, you have to know what you are trying to learn from the research. In marketing research, defining the problem you need to solve will determine what information you need and how you can get that information. This will help your organization clarify the overarching problem or opportunity, such as how to best address the loss of market share or how to launch a new product to a specific demographic. 

Develop questions that will allow you to define your problem (or opportunity), and examine all potential causes so that the research can be whittled down to the information you actually need to solve that problem or determine what action to take regarding an opportunity. Oftentimes, these are questions about who your target market or ideal buyer persona is (for example: “What does our ideal customer look like?”). These might include questions about demographics, what their occupation is, what they like to do in their spare time—anything to help you get a clearer picture of who your ideal buyer persona is. Consider as many variables and potential causes as possible.

2. Develop Your Marketing Research Plan

After you’ve examined all potential causes of the problem and have used those questions to boil down exactly what you’re trying to solve, it’s time to build the research plan. Your research plan can be overwhelming to create because it can include any method that will help you answer the research problem or explore an opportunity identified in step one. 

To help you develop the research plan, let’s review a few techniques for conducting research:

  • I nterview prospects and customers . Oftentimes, you get the best feedback by using this tactic because you’re going straight to the source. This might take the form of a focus group or one-on-one interviews. Use your defined research problem to help select the right people to interview.
  • Conduct a survey using SurveyMonkey or another tool.
  • Run user tests on your website or landing page(s). This is a cost-effective approach that can provide a lot of insight and data on how your customers or potential customers behave or respond to something, whether it’s new messaging or branding or a modified product or service you are thinking about offering. Simple A/B tests can go a long way in discovering user behavior. Use heatmapping tools, such as Hotjar or Lucky Orange, and website analytics tools , such as Google Analytics or HubSpot analytics , to track results depending on what data you need to collect.

Oftentimes, we do all of this work and gather all of the data—only to realize that we didn’t have to reinvent the wheel because someone had already run a similar, credible study or solved the same problem. That doesn’t mean you don’t need to do any research, but learning about what other organizations have done to solve a problem or seize an opportunity can help you tweak your research study and save you time when considering all of the research options. In marketing research, this is called secondary data because it has been collected by someone else, versus the primary data that you would collect through your own research study.

3. Collect Relevant Data and Information

In marketing research, most of the data you collect will be quantitative (numbers or data) versus qualitative, which is descriptive and observational. Ideally, you will gather a mix of the two types of data. For example, you might run an A/B test on your website to see if a new pricing tier would bring in more business. In that research study, you might also interview several customers about whether or not the new pricing tier would appeal to them. This way, you’re receiving hard data and qualitative data that provide more color and insight.

When collecting data, make sure it's valid and unbiased. You should never ask a research interviewee, “You think that we should offer a higher pricing tier with additional services, correct?” This type of question is clearly designed to influence the way the person responds. Try asking both open-ended and closed-ended questions (for instance, a multiple-choice question asking what income range best describes you).

4. Analyze Data and Report Findings

Now that you’ve gathered all of the information you need, it’s time for the fun part: analyzing the data. Although one piece of information or data might jump out at you, it’s important to look for trends as opposed to specific pieces of information. As you're analyzing your data, don't try to find patterns based on your assumptions prior to collecting the data. 

Sometimes, it’s important to write up a summary of the study, including the process that you followed, the results, conclusions, and what steps you recommend taking based on those results. Even if you don’t need a formal marketing research report, be sure that you review the study and results so that you can articulate the recommended course of action. Was your hypothesis proven wrong? Great—that's why you do testing and don't run with assumptions when making decisions that could have a major impact on your organization. It’s always better to take the results as they are than to twist the data to prove yourself right.

5. Put Your Research into Action

Your research is complete. It's time to present your findings and take action. Start developing your inbound marketing strategies and campaigns. Put your findings to the test and get going! The biggest takeaway here is that, although this round of research is complete, it's not over.

The problems, business environment, and trends are constantly changing, which means that your research is never over. The trends you discovered through your research are evolving. You should be analyzing your data on a regular basis to see where you can improve. The more you know about your buyer personas, industry, and company, the more successful your marketing efforts and company will be. When you look at it that way, you should start to wonder why so many organizations don’t budget time and resources for marketing research.

As concerns around the state of the economy and inflation continue, about eight-in-ten registered voters (81%) say the economy will be very important to their vote in the 2024 presidential election.

While the economy is the top issue among voters, a large majority (69%) cite at least five of the 10 issues asked about in the survey as very important to their vote.

There are wide differences between voters who support Harris and Trump when it comes to the issues.

Among Trump supporters, the economy (93%), immigration (82%) and violent crime (76%) are the leading issues. Just 18% of Trump supporters say racial and ethnic inequality is very important. And even fewer say climate change is very important (11%).

For Harris supporters, issues such as health care (76%) and Supreme Court appointments (73%) are of top importance. Large majorities also cite the economy (68%) and abortion (67%) as very important to their vote in the election.

Most voters cite several issues as very important to their vote this November. Very few – just 5% – say only one issue or no issues are highly important.

Majorities of both Harris supporters (71%) and Trump supporters (69%) say at least five of 10 issues included in the survey are very important to their vote.

Harris supporters are more likely than Trump supporters to say most of the issues included are very important. About a third of Harris supporters (32%) say at least eight of 10 issues are very important, compared with 17% of Trump supporters.

While the economy has long been a top issue for voters – and continues to be one today – other issues have become increasingly important for voters over the past four years.

About six-in-ten voters (61%) today say immigration is very important to their vote – a 9 percentage point increase from the 2020 presidential election and 13 points higher than during the 2022 congressional elections.

Immigration is now a much more important issue for Republican voters in particular: 82% of Trump supporters say it is very important to their vote in the 2024 election, up 21 points from 2020.

About four-in-ten Harris supporters (39%) say immigration is very important to their vote. This is 8 points higher than the share of Democratic congressional supporters who said this in 2022, but lower than the 46% of Biden supporters who cited immigration as very important four years ago.

In August 2020, fewer than half of voters (40%) said abortion was a very important issue to their vote. At the time, Trump voters (46%) were more likely than Biden voters (35%) to say it mattered a great deal.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade , opinions about abortion’s importance as a voting issue shifted. Today, 67% of Harris supporters call the issue very important – nearly double the share of Biden voters who said this four years ago, though somewhat lower than the share of midterm Democratic voters who said this in 2022 (74%). And about a third of Trump supporters (35%) now say abortion is very important to their vote – 11 points lower than in 2020.

Confidence in Harris and Trump on top issues

Voters have more confidence in Trump than Harris on economic, immigration and foreign policies. Half or more voters say they are at least somewhat confident in Trump to make good decisions in these areas, while smaller shares (45% each) say this about Harris.

In contrast, voters have more confidence in Harris than Trump to make good decisions about abortion policy and to effectively address issues around race. Just over half of voters have confidence in Harris on these issues, while 44% have confidence in Trump on these issues.

Trump holds a slight edge over Harris for handling law enforcement and criminal justice issues (51% Trump, 47% Harris). Voters are equally confident in Harris and Trump to select good nominees for the Supreme Court (50% each).

Fewer than half of voters say they are very or somewhat confident in either candidate to bring the country closer together (41% are confident in Harris, 36% in Trump). And voters express relatively little confidence in Trump (37%) or Harris (32%) to reduce the influence of money in politics.

Since Biden dropped out of the presidential race in July , there has been movement on how confident voters are in the candidates to address issues facing the country.

Abortion policy

In July, 48% of voters were confident in Biden to make good decisions about abortion policy. Today, 55% of voters are confident in Harris to do the same.

Harris currently has an 11-point advantage over Trump on voters’ confidence to handle abortion policy decisions.

Immigration policy

Voters also express more confidence in Harris to make wise decisions about immigration policy than they did for Biden before he withdrew from the race. Today, 45% are confident in Harris on this issue; in July, 35% said this about Biden.

While Trump’s advantage over Harris on immigration policy is less pronounced than it was over Biden, he continues to hold a 7-point edge. Voters are as confident in his ability to make wise decisions about immigration policy as they were in July (52%).

Foreign and economic policies

Harris has also improved over Biden in voters’ confidence to make good decisions about foreign and economic policies. Currently, 45% of voters are confident in Harris on each of these issues.

In July, 39% had confidence in Biden to make good foreign policy decisions, while a similar share (40%) had confidence in him on economic policy.

Trump holds an edge over Harris on both of these issues, though both are somewhat narrower than the advantage he had over Biden on these issues in July.

The 2024 LDC U.S. Latino GDP Report, produced by the Latino Donor Collaborative and sponsored by Wells Fargo , offers groundbreaking insights into the immense economic power of the U.S. Latino community. This 7th edition of the annual report, authored by experts from the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University , highlights key areas of growth and the significant contributions Latinos make across industries, entrepreneurship, and human capital. In 2022, the U.S. Latino GDP reached $3.6 trillion, ranking as the fifth-largest economy globally, surpassing India, the U.K., and France. This growth reflects the continued upward trajectory of the Latino cohort in the United States.

Key findings from the report show that U.S. Latinos are not only driving GDP growth but also excelling in sectors such as manufacturing, retail trade, and construction. Manufacturing alone contributed $457.4 billion to the Latino economy, marking a significant 48.4% year-over-year growth. In states like California, Texas, and Florida, the Latino economy continues to outperform non-Latino counterparts, but it’s not limited to traditional hubs—states like Georgia and Washington have also seen impressive Latino-led economic expansion.

The report also focuses on the younger demographic of Latinos, who make up a large portion of the workforce. Their contributions are helping to fill gaps left by retiring non-Latino workers, making them critical to sustaining economic momentum. Additionally, Latino entrepreneurship is on the rise, with Latino-owned businesses driving job creation and innovation, especially in sectors like AI.

With projections showing that the U.S. Latino economy will surpass Germany’s GDP by 2027, the report emphasizes that investing in Latino talent and businesses is essential for the future of the U.S. economy. The continued growth of the Latino workforce, coupled with increasing educational attainment, points to an even stronger economic impact in the coming years.

For anybody who deals in numbers, historical comparisons are harder than they used to be.

Take property market transactions. Until the early months of 2020, you could compare any monthly data point to previous years and you'd have a pretty good idea if you were looking at a busy month or not. The pandemic then swept the globe, followed by a once-in-a-generation bout of inflation. Now, what constitutes 'normal' is less clear. Should we compare data to the years before the pandemic, or after?

Opting for the latter comes with the judgment that something has changed permanently since the onset of the pandemic, which feels more ambitious. However, interest rates are falling and the dust is settling on a period of historic volatility. Now feels like the right time to assess what has and hasn't changed - for good.

A super-prime expansion

Global buyers acquired 463 super-prime (US$10m+) homes in the three months to June 2024, marginally down from the 476 sales in the previous quarter, according to our latest Global Super-Prime Intelligence report .

Sales volumes in the top end of the residential sales market have settled at almost two-thirds above their pre-pandemic trend level. This will endure: the legacy of the pandemic has been a step-change in the size of the super-prime market, as activity in markets like Palm Beach, Miami and Dubai in particular surged following a shift in wealth distribution globally. Total annual sales values at US$33.4 billion contrast with US$20.1 billion in 2019.

Dubai is the standout growth market, with US$10 million+ sales rising from 23 in 2019 to 436 in the most recent 12-month period. Geneva has also seen a surge, with sales increasing from 59 in 2019 to 102 in the most recent period. Palm Beach has gone from 50 to 138, and Miami has experienced a remarkable rise from 41 to 149. While a few markets, such as New York, Singapore, Paris, and Hong Kong, have been less impacted by the recent market growth, some mature markets, like London and Los Angeles, saw sales increase by between 25% and 50% over the period.

The driver of this market growth has been a broader increase in global wealth in recent years. The Wealth Report from Knight Frank confirmed a 19% growth in the number of ultra-high-networth individuals (UHNWIs) globally over the most recent five-year period. The remarkable performance of some US markets and Dubai can be partly attributed to the recent uptick in wealth creation in these regions, with the number of UHNWIs in the US up by 8% in 2023 and by 6.2% across the Middle East.

Lasting impacts

As central banks began hiking rates to combat surging inflation during the early months of 2022, it looked feasible that one of the lasting effects of the pandemic would be improved housing affordability.

The opposite happened. In many wealthy nations, house prices rose or declined only marginally. In the UK, values are only 3% below the all-time high recorded in the summer of 2022. In the US, affordability worsened even before you account for the increase in borrowing costs. The picture in rental markets is particularly worrying.

Dissatisfaction with housing costs is now at a record high across OECD nations, according to Gallup Analytics figures covered by the FT this week. The poll of 37,000 people in 37 countries shows that discontent over housing affordability is highest among under-30s and those aged 30 to 49, but even 44% of over-50s are unhappy.

The issue is at the forefront of the US election and will be for many more political cycles. Borrowing costs are unlikely to fall to the lows we saw after the Global Financial Crisis and house prices are likely to rise modestly in the years ahead. The disruption to construction that started during the pandemic will continue to compound the issue - a separate piece in the FT this morning covers the credit crunch facing US homebuilders. Banks have cut lending for residential construction by more than 10% and show little desire to ease credit conditions.

UK housing supply

Annual results published by housebuilder Barratt Developments this morning give a sense of how tight supply will be as demand picks up through the autumn and beyond.

The company completed 14,004 homes during the year through June, down 18.6% compared to the same period a year earlier. It expects to deliver 13,000 to 13.500 homes during the coming year.

"Whilst demand continues to be sensitive to mortgage affordability, and reduced land buying activity during the past two years has had a near-term impact on the number of outlets we are operating from, we are well-positioned to meet the strong underlying demand for new homes of all tenures in the UK," said CEO David Thomas. "We welcome the Government's proposed reforms of the planning system as one of the key levers to increase housebuilding, drive economic growth and tackle the chronic undersupply of high-quality, sustainable homes."

Leading indicators suggest that purchasing activity will continue to improve through the final months of the year. Mortgage approvals for house purchases data published by the Bank of England on Friday, which is a good indicator of future borrowing, increased to 62,000 in July, up from 60,600 the previous month and the highest since September 2022.

An EPC cliff edge

UK landlords might be unable to let an office without an EPC A or B as soon as 2030. Currently, 70% of commercial property floor space is rated EPC C or below across England & Wales, so the sector faces a substantial challenge.

Cyber security skills in the UK labour market 2024: technical report

This is research into the UK cyber security labour market, carried out on behalf of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). The research explores the nature and extent of cyber security skills gaps (people lacking appropriate skills) and skills shortages (a lack of people available to work in cyber security job roles) using:

  • Representative surveys of cyber sector businesses and the wider population of UK organisations (businesses, charities and public sector organisations).
  • Qualitative research with recruitment agents, cyber firms and medium/large organisations in various sectors.
  • A secondary analysis of cyber security job postings on the Lightcast labour market database, as well as reviewing the supply of cyber security talent through sources such as the Higher Education Statistics Authority ( HESA ) and Jisc .

This year’s report finds:

  • Across the economy, around half (44%) of businesses have skills gaps in basic technical areas. Incident management skills gaps have increased from 27% in 2020 to 48% in 2024.
  • Demand for cyber security professionals has fallen, with core cyber job postings decreasing by 32% between 2002 and 2023. There have been challenging macroeconomic factors and job cuts in the technology sector, but cyber security has been more resilient than the wider digital sector.
  • The UK has made significant improvements in training new potential talent for the cyber security labour market and the number of cyber security graduates has increased by 34%.

Sellers lose their advantage, but lower rates may revive market competition (July 2024 Market Report)

Competition for homes and price appreciation tapered off faster than normal in July as high housing costs continued to stymie shoppers. But recent drops in mortgage rates should spur more competition as we head into fall. 

Sellers lose the upper hand

Sellers gave up an advantage over buyers in July on the national scale, as the Zillow market heat index moved into neutral territory for the first time since December. This marks the first July the national market has been neutral since 2019 – in each of the past two years, the market moved into neutral ground in October. 

One sign of decreased competition is homes taking longer to sell. Homes that went pending in July typically did so after 18 days on the market. That’s almost a week longer than last July. 

Inventory continues to accumulate, and now stands nearly 25% above last year’s levels, marking the eighth straight month the year-over-year inventory gap has widened. The inventory shortfall compared to pre-pandemic norms shrank a bit and is now down 31.5%, the smallest deficit since October 2020. 

More options for buyers means less intense competition for each home. That’s evident in the growing share of home sellers cutting their prices. More than 26% of homes on Zillow received a price cut in July, the highest share for any July since at least 2018, when the dataset began. 

What happens next? 

If this relief from mortgage rates holds, we should see more buyers re-starting their hunt for a home. By the end of July, lower rates made a new homeowner’s mortgage payment on the typical home just under $200 more than it would take to rent the same kind of property. That’s shrunk from a $247 gap as recently as April. Now, lower rates in August are making buying even more attractive by comparison. 

Lower rates aren’t likely to encourage a comparable wave of current homeowners to sell. Zillow surveys show 80% of recent sellers were influenced by major life events, such as a change in their household size or working situation. New listings typically surge in spring and then taper off as homeowners aim to sell, buy another house, and be moved in before school and the fall holidays begin. 

More demand without a corresponding increase in supply would likely mean competition ramping back up, or at least a delay in the usual post-summer cooldown. 

Home values

  • The typical U.S. home is worth $362,156. 
  • The typical monthly mortgage payment, assuming 20% down, is $1,900. That is up 3.4% from last year and has increased by 111.1% since pre-pandemic.
  • Home values climbed month over month in 34 of the 50 largest metro areas in July. Gains were biggest in Providence (1%), New York (0.9%), Hartford (0.9%), Buffalo (0.9%) and Cleveland (0.8%).
  • Home values fell, on a monthly basis, in 13 major metro areas in July. The largest monthly drops were in San Jose (-0.4%), Austin (-0.4%), Phoenix (-0.3%), San Francisco (-0.2%) and Pittsburgh (-0.2%).
  • Home values are up from year-ago levels in 44 of the 50 largest metro areas. Annual price gains are highest in San Jose (10.6%), Hartford (9.1%), San Diego (7.8%), Providence (7.4%) and New York (6.8%).
  • Home values are down from year-ago levels in four major metro areas: New Orleans (-5.3%), Austin (-4.6%), San Antonio (-2.9%) and Birmingham (-0.7%).

New listings & total inventory

  • New listings decreased 6.3% month over month in July.
  • New listings increased 6% compared to last year.
  • New listings are 24.7% lower than pre-pandemic levels.
  • Total inventory (the number of listings active at any time during the month) increased 1.3% month over month in July. 
  • There were 24.6% more listings active in July compared to last year.
  • Inventory levels are 31.5% lower than pre-pandemic levels.

Price cuts & share sold above list

  • 26.2% of listings in July had a price cut. That is up 1.8 percentage points (ppts) month over month.
  • There are 4.5 ppts more listings with a price cut compared to last year.
  • 35.4% of homes sold above their list price last month. That is up 0.2 ppts month over month.
  • 5 ppts fewer homes sold above their list price compared to last year.

Newly pending listings

  • Newly pending listings decreased by 1.2% in July from the prior month.
  • Newly pending listings increased by 1% from last year.
  • Median days to pending, the typical time from the initial list date to moving to pending status for homes that went under contract, was at 18 days in July. That is up three days from the month before and up six days from last year. 

Market heat index

  • Zillow’s market heat index shows the nation is currently a neutral market.
  • The strongest sellers markets in the country are Buffalo , Hartford, San Jose, Boston and San Francisco.
  • The strongest buyers markets in the country are New Orleans, Miami, Austin, Memphis and Jacksonville.
  • Asking rents increased by 0.4% month over month in July . The pre-pandemic average rent growth for this time of year is 0.6%.
  • Rents are now up 3.4% from last year.
  • Rents fell, on a monthly basis, in one major metro area: Austin (-0.2%).
