WashU Dorms: What They’re Like from a Former Student

Washington University in St. Louis, my alma mater, has some of the best dorms in the country. They routinely top Princeton Review’s rankings of best university dorms, and with good reason. If you’re considering WashU, you’ll be pleased to learn that after a hard day of studying, students come back to soft beds, fresh, quiet dorms, and a host of other amenities.

If you’re interested in help with WashU’s essays , applicant stories , or admissions stats , check out our other resources. If not, keep reading for some immediate dorm envy!

WashU Dorms: an Overview

WashU has a variety of dorms and apartments for students. I’ll try to break it down simply here:

Overall quality: WashU is famous for its impressive dorms, and I enjoyed my time there while I was still figuring out how to live on my own. The mattresses are really soft (Tempur-pedic), and most dorms had up-to-date air conditioning. There’s only a few old dorms (Lee and Beaumont) that still have common-floor bathroom facilities; most dorms have private suite bathrooms instead. Some of the buildings are older (1960s), but the interiors have all been modernized, and WashU is constantly making improvements. Laundry is easy, with washers and dryers on each floor. Overall, the WashU dorms are great both for students who want to be social and for students who like their privacy.

Price tag: university housing can be prohibitively expensive if it’s not covered by your financial aid. Rates are brutal , and I got my own place junior year for a fraction of the cost.

Other cons: WashU constructs a lot, so building and renovation noise can be an inconvenience. Also, the picture-perfect dorms can start to feel a bit Disney-ish – more independent students often feel like they’re too cushy, childlike, and close to campus. And while each dorm has a printer, students may want to bring their own in case of service issues. I can’t count the times my dorm printer failed me.

The South 40: this is where all of WashU’s underclassmen dorms are located . If you’re a freshman, you have to stay here, and most sophomores end up living here as well. Great things about the South 40 include:

  • A workout center and basketball court
  • Yearly Res College Olympics, a competition between all the dorms
  • Student businesses: the South 40 also houses various student-run businesses, including a candy shop, a bike rental store, and my personal favorite, SWAP, where students can donate old items and take new ones for free.
  • WUStock , a yearly concert that’s put on in the field on the South 40.
  • Bear’s Den, the dining center! Certain options are available past midnight. I loved the food here – there are all sorts of options. The side bistro, Cherry Tree, is a Starbucks-style grab-and-go where you can pick up coffee and cookies. You can also buy grocery items with your meal points.
  • Habif Clinic : you can visit the doctor with a short walk, and Habif also has its own pharmacy. WashU students also receive an allotment of free therapy sessions with Habif’s mental health professionals, a resource I used a lot.

LLCs: WashU offers several living-learning communities , now called LLCs. These LLCs are located in the Village, which is the closest group of dorms to campus. Students can join existing LLCs, such as the Sustainability LLC and Hamsini, the Black diasporic LLC, as well as form their own.

The Village/Frat Row: You can live in the Village starting mainly in junior year, though there may be some exceptions for sophomores. Fraternity members can opt to live in frat houses here as well.

  • The dorms here are more sophisticated, with kitchenettes and different features.
  • Right on campus. Like, less than a minute’s walk.
  • The Village has its own dining center, outdoor pool, and even a theatre.
  • It’s also right by the athletic center and workout facilities.
  • One thing you should know is that there are no sorority houses at WashU. While frats have houses on Frat Row, sorority members live scattered in dorms, apartments, etc.

Apartments: Many students opt to live in apartments off-campus. You opt for an independent landlord, as I did, or continue to live in university-owned housing (which is really expensive). WashU offers a wide variety of university-owned locations around the school, and you can continue to use your ID as a swipe card in these apartments. Standout apartments include the Lofts, which are located above the bustling nightlife of the Delmar Loop, five minutes north of campus.

Freshman Dorms at WashU

All students are required to live on campus for their first year. Also, freshmen aren’t allowed to have a car (sad face). Sorry. You’ll be on the South 40, though, so right near campus.

When you’re admitted, you can either 1) get a roommate via random selection, or 2) try to find a roommate through Facebook groups and inform the university of your decision. All the most successful arrangements I know were through Facebook – going in randomly isn’t something I’d recommend. Freshman year is just too pivotal a time for you to be in social limbo, like I was with my randomly-assigned suitemates.

Best and Worst Dorms at WashU

The best dorms at WashU would have to be Umrath and the South 40 House (“SoFoHo”). They filled me with so much envy as a student. Clean, modern, and attached to the workout facility and Bear’s Den. YOU COULD GO TO THE GYM WITHOUT EVER HAVING TO STEP OUTSIDE. Absolutely amazing. Runners Up: Lien and Gregg . These are also state-of-the-art, with the benefit of being the closest to campus.

Worst dorms : Lee/Beaumont. As I mentioned, these are the most dated dorms, and still have the common-floor bathrooms. They’re also small and cramped, and first-floor dorms have big windows with hardly any privacy. Second place for worst is the Shanedling/Dauten/Rutledge trio of dorms – they’re the oldest on campus, super dark, and stuffy.

Housing Selection at WashU

For information on seeking freshman roommates, see the previous section on freshman housing.

After that, it’s really complicated! When I was at WashU, the housing selection process was the bane of everyone’s existence, and not even our RAs could give us solid answers. You need to budget a lot of time, and be flexible if things don’t work out.

Towards the middle of the year, you should get together with your friends and start planning next year’s housing, from suite style to ideal dorm building. Start asking around early, because housing selection tends to be really cliquey, and I often found myself shut out of groups. Because WashU has a variety of room plans, your group can be a double (2 people), a suite (4 to 6 people), or even a single, if you want to fly solo.

In WashU’s student portal, WEBSTAC, you can declare yourselves a group, add members, and pick your preferred dorms and rooms. Setup in WEBSTAC is fairly easy, and the hardest part seems to be wrangling your group members to all sign off and complete the necessary e-forms.

Being officially registered in WEBSTAC is important, because each party will be assigned a time slot for selection. When I was there, it was by lottery number, and there’s some weird calculus to do between group members’ numbers. Again, leave time. It’s rough.

My Dorm Experience at WashU

I committed to WashU fairly late, so I ended up having to go with randomly-assigned roommates. This wasn’t a great situation, simply because we ended up being completely different personalities. However, rooming with ambivalent acquaintances had its benefits – there was little drama (if little community), and few distractions (if no conversation).

My dorm, Park/Mudd, put on a lot of events to make us feel welcome, including “Mudd Pies,” where we made classic chocolate-dirt and gummy worm sundaes. I felt really comfortable with my RAs and WUSAs. WUSAs are underclassmen who are basically RAs in training: our WUSAs made us treats every week and set up study groups.

My sophomore year, I roomed with a bunch of friends. Again, we weren’t terribly close, so the same pros and cons apply.

The last two years, I lived off-campus. That roommate pairing ended up being a lot more successful, and I look back on those two years with the most nostalgia of all. (I still was able to keep up my coffee and treats with an off-campus meal plan!) The area around WashU is such a wonderful place, and I was immediately within walking distance of the Loop, my favorite grocer, the Metra tram, and all the museums of Forest Park. In the end, you should always remember that the dorms can often be just the start of your experience. Stay open, and enjoy them however long you stay.

Omsk , officially the Siberian Black League , is a warlord state in Western Siberia. Occupying the territory of the former Omsk Oblast, it borders Tomsk to the north, the Kazakh SSR to the south, Tyumen to the east, and Novosibirsk to the west.

  • 2.1 National spirits
  • 2.2 Cabinet
  • 3.1 Generals

Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union , the city of Omsk, initially held by the West Siberian People's Republic , was seized by a league of ultranationalists sharing views of anti-German sentiment and revanchism. Led by Dmitry Karbyshev 's All-Russian Black League, upon the seizing of Omsk, the ultranationalist regime had to industrialize and fortify it. In a way, some could say it's nothing but a fortified city in which the Black League militarizes and prepares for its future conflicts.

The political system of Omsk is governed as a militarist one-party state since its founding, ruled by Karbyshev and his like-minded comrades of the All-Russian Black League, an organization fanatically devoted to revanchism against the Greater Germanic Reich . However, at heart, Karbyshev is a Russian and while he sought to create an ultranationalist military state to take revenge against Germany, he did not account for the despots that wished to claim as much power as possible from him. Karbyshev is represented in-game as a dying man soon to fall, due to him leading a brutal military dictatorship, while being opposed to the radical rhetoric of his officer clique. The Black League has since become an ultranationalist state, even more radical in their hatred of Germany. Due to Karbyshev's declining health, many of the other officers have gained massive influence in the leadership of Omsk. The reality is that Karbyshev started a movement that assumed it was able to change the hearts of the despots with nationalism rather than terror; but it has since been corrupted beyond his visions, and there is little he can do to stop the train of degeneracy. Indeed, once Karbyshev dies and Omsk is still around, actual ultranationalist and General Dmitry Yazov will assume leadership of the Black League and prevent the despotic cliques from growing.

Under the sheer doctrine of anti-German sentiment, the theory of the “Great Trial” in Omsk comes in. This is where the warlord state will prepare for its final assault on the Reich, as revenge for the “First Trial” which brought the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the “Second Trial” being the West Russian War . Their hatred doesn't stop with just Germany, but it includes many who collaborated with them. Some officers of the Black League even go as far as to want to destroy the United States for not helping enough during the Great Patriotic War. In preparation for their war with Germany, they are expectant of nuclear strikes and so have started to construct massive metro tunnels to double as shelter from the warheads and radioactive fallout. The resolve of the Black League cannot be stopped, even with the threat of nuclear war.

Omsk is one of the hardest paths in TNO, due to it being weaker than a lot of the surrounding warlords and being unable to conduct diplomacy at all. To reunite Russia, Omsk will have to fight every single state in its way. Their end goal is the complete extermination of the Reich and the German people, and they will stop at nothing to reach this. They are hard-coded for hostility and are always at war with someone, but an AI Omsk will almost always never be successful. Despite being founded on nothing but hatred, when they unify Western Siberia and start to emerge on the international stage, they actually try to conceal their ideology and ambitions from foreign influences. They stick with a nondescript name of the “West Siberian Provisional Authority” under the guise of a protective military authority and switch their ideology to “Despotism”.

National spirits

During the Last Trial, each of us saw and faced Hell on Earth. The Nazis razed our cities, slaughtered our families, and shattered the Union we worked so hard to build. And as the world unraveled around us, we resolved to never again allow the Teuton to despoil our homes. Never again would we tremble in fear as the jackboot trampled on our soil.

Whatever the cost, whatever the sacrifice, the day of the will come.

On that day, they will feel our terrible vengeance.

Our backs are pressed against the wall, our supplies run low, and yet morale is as high as ever. Each and every son and daughter of the Black League know their mission and know they have nothing to lose, for the Last Trial already robbed them of everything. This simple truth has transformed the League from a band of disgruntled veterans to an army with discipline unparalleled in the Russian wastes.

We will survive our current, dire circumstances, we will rebuild what was lost, and when the comes, we will repay our enemies for every life lost.

It is a sad fact that the founder of the Black League, General Karbyshev, is not as young as he once was. As he has aged, though his mind is as sharp as ever, his body has become frail and weak. The people weep to know that he is not long for this world; and yet not all is lost. The loyal sons and daughters of the Black League's officer corps are glad to receive and deliver General Karbyshev's orders, and even to reinterpret them when the General's mind has slipped.
It is a service that most are glad to perform, no matter how much the General begs for it to end.

Omsk has at least eleven generals.

  • Ironically, according to a former developer of West Siberia, Omsk at one point had a National Socialist path as a "sane" option, due to now-former head developer Pink Panzer wanting every region in Western Siberia to have multiple paths. This was changed after the other developers convinced him to have Omsk only have one path.
  • Omsk was partially inspired by the Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia , a militant group that aspired to carve out an ethnic Armenian homeland in eastern Turkey.

Residential Life

  • Summer Housing
  • For Faculty
  • Residential Life Facilities

Residential Life makes housing assignments by matching students who share the same assigned sex at birth and by reviewing roommate preference questions provided in the housing application. Gender-Inclusive Housing is an  optional  process.

When students opt in, Residential Life places them in rooms without considering each student’s assigned sex at birth.  This includes when empty bed spaces need to be filled during the academic year. Students who opt into Gender-Inclusive Housing will provide their gender identity and the gender identities that they are comfortable sharing a bedroom with. Then, Residential Life will make  every attempt  to place students into a shared bedroom space according to their preferences.  If a space cannot be found that meets the student’s preferences, a student of  any  gender identity may be assigned to their bedroom/suite/apartment.

The vast majority of rooms available to first-year students are shared bedrooms (double bedrooms). There are  few  single occupancy bedrooms. Continuing students taking part in Gender-Inclusive Housing can be assigned to any suite or apartment space they would already be eligible to live in.  All rooms in the Gender-Inclusive Housing option share a bathroom within a suite or apartment.

Gender-Inclusive Housing spaces are  not  placed within one floor or community and  change each academic year .  Students taking part in Gender-Inclusive Housing receive assignments with no additional preference compared to other students within their class.

All students who can benefit from or provide a welcoming, safe, and inclusive environment for gender expansive students are encouraged to take part in the Gender- Inclusive Housing option.

GIH is available for all students to take part in while completing their Housing Application in the Housing Portal. Students taking part will be asked to designate which gender identities they are comfortable sharing a living space with.  All students assigned to a Gender-Inclusive Housing space  must  opt into Gender-Inclusive Housing.

It is highly recommended students that wish to take part in Gender-Inclusive Housing complete their application  before  the administrative assignment process begins , as placements are made on a rolling basis as spaces are available. Students who take part in GIH can take part in roommate grouping, but it is recommended that all students within their roommate group opt in to GIH to avoid complications should a space open within their suite/apartment in the future.

Providing your gender identity as part of Gender-Inclusive Housing  does not  make that information available to other students, and it is  not  displayed as a part of your roommate profile.

The Kaleidoscope Living Learning Community provides a safe and affirming space for LGBTQIA+ students who choose to live in Residential Life housing.
