Tom and Jerry Movie Review: This friendship-based film is a one-time watch

Raaghav Vinay Shivagange’s film, which holds an iconic title, Tom and Jerry , received a lot of attention with the song, Hayagide Yedeyolage .

The film, espousing middle-class values, is shown through the eyes of an orphan boy Dharma (Nischith Korodi). He is later adopted and starts living with his foster parents. Since childhood, his dream is to live a rich lifestyle, and believes that only money is important in life. His journey brings out a reflection of life struggles, and he gets into a job out of family compulsion. However, life takes a turn for Dharma when he accidentally meets his childhood friend, Satya (Chaithra Rao). Their journey teaches each other some life lessons, and Dharma realises the joy of celebrating life, irrespective of status. This forms the crux of this friendship-based subject.

Tom and Jerry also gives you a look at the emotional impact of an adopted child, and the psychological issues they face in bonding with the parents. This slice-of-life film by Raaghav Vinay Shivagange is quite relatable. However, the director has tried to push this novel-based story into a commercial setup by bringing in an overdose of gang fights. This is yet another film that suffers from a long duration. The director, unfortunately, fills the film with repeated scenes and spends too much time on giving gyan .

For Nischith, who made his debut with a school-based subject, Gantumoote, Tom and Jerry helps him to make a transition as a mass hero, and he has put his best foot forward. Chaithra Rao makes a difference with her role. She plays a rich girl, who wants to lead a normal life. It makes for a unique and colourful characterisation, and she does a convincing job. Tara and Jagadish come in supporting characters, and they are the film’s soul.

With good compositions from Mathews Manu, overall Tom and Jerry is a one-time watch, and can definitely be enjoyed in the company of friends and family

ಇಂಥವರನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿನಿಧಿಸುವ ನಾಯಕ, ನಾಯಕಿ, ಅವರನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾಣಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ನೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಹೆತ್ತವರು, ಪಯಣದ ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಚಾರಗಳ ಮುಖಾಮುಖಿ ಆದರೆ ಹೇಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದೇ ‘ಟಾಮ್‌ ಆಂಡ್‌ ಜೆರ್ರಿ’ ಚಿತ್ರದ ಒಳಸುಳಿ. ಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಒಂದು ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿದಷ್ಟುಸರಳವಾಗಿಲ್ಲ ಇಡೀ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಎಂಬುದು ಈ ಚಿತ್ರದ ಪ್ಲಸ್‌ ಹಾಗೂ ಮೈನಸ್‌. ಆದರೂ ಕಾಮಿಕ್‌ ಟೈಟಲ್‌ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡರೂ ತೀರಾ ಕಾಮಿಡಿ ಕತೆ ಹೇಳದೆ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಯಂಗ್‌ ಜನರೇಷನ್‌ನ ಯೋಚನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡಿ ಹಿಡಿಯುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡಿರುವುದು ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕ ರಾಘವ್‌ ವಿನಯ್‌ ಅವರ ಪ್ರತಿಭೆಗೆ ಹಿಡಿದ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ.

ಮೊದಲ ನಿರ್ದೇಶನದ ಚಿತ್ರದಲ್ಲೇ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಹೇಳಿಬಿಡಬೇಕು ಎನ್ನುವ ಧಾವಂತ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಕತೆ ರೂಪಿಸಿದ್ದರೆ ‘ಟಾಮ್‌ ಆಂಡ್‌ ಜೆರ್ರಿ’ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟುಸರಳ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕರ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಆಗುವ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆ ಇತ್ತು. ಇದರ ನಡುವೆಯೂ ಹೊಸತನದ ಆಲೋಚನೆಯಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ ಈ ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ನೋಡಲು ಅಡ್ಡಿ ಇಲ್ಲ.

Tom and Jerry OTT release: When and where to watch Nischith Korodi’s second film

The film, which also brought popular singer Sid Sriram to Kannada cinema, is available to stream now.

When it was announced, there were several factors about the Kannada film Tom & Jerry that caught everyone’s attention. For starters, the title was catchy. Second, it was actor Nischith Korodi’s follow up film, after Roopa Rao’s critically-acclaimed directorial, the coming-of-age drama Gantumoote, in which he played a school student. And third, the film brought popular Tamil and Telugu playback singer Sid Sriram to Kannada cinema, with the song, Haayagide.

The film follows the protagonists, Dharma (Nischith) and Satya (Chaitra Achar), childhood pals, who hail from vastly different socio-economic backgrounds. He lives with his foster parents in a slum, while she is from a well-to-do family. Despite her rich family background, though, Satya is not enamoured by the material world and wants to make a difference to the world. Tom & Jerry is the love story of these two, peppered with ample commercial elements, making it Nischith’s progression to mass hero. The film, directed by Raaghav Vinay Shivagange, released in theatres on November 12, and has now come to OTT.

Prior to the film’s release, Nischith had told us that choosing it as his second film was a conscious decision, as he wanted something that was nothing like his debut movie. “I did not want to get typecast as a romantic hero. Despite constantly feuding, Tom and Jerry have a short truce and come together when it's going to benefit the other characters. They're persistent and dedicated -- to battling each other. Kayla is determined, hardworking, but also lies repeatedly at first about her qualifications and to a prospective job applicant. But she apologizes, proves herself reliable and trustworthy.

Violence & Scariness

Lots of cat-and-mouse chases, injuries, slapstick action. Mostly Tom, but also Jerry and Spike get hurt in various ways, including getting hit by cars; smashing into doors, walls, windows, and trash cans; falling repeatedly to the ground (sometimes from very high up); getting electrocuted/hit by lightning; nearly being stomped on by elephants and chased by a tiger; etc. Use of weapons including axe, mallet, chainsaw, etc. A military-level drone goes rogue, starts terrorizing hotel guests (off-screen). Tom and Jerry wreak serious damage on hotel property. An agitated pair of elephants and a tiger scare guests. Alley cats threaten Tom on the street and in the pound, which is somewhat frightening (Tom and Jerry are thrown in a cage). Alley cats tell Tom he has to eat Jerry or they will.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

A couple hugs and holds hands. On their wedding day, the married couple kisses. Two employees flirt with each other. Tom is in love with a female cat. Nonsexual "nudity": Jerry sits on a copier and makes photocopies of himself, including one of his butt.

Insults like "He's a fraud!" and "They certainly wouldn't hire you," and "What a sucker." A fish thinks of a poop emoji in a thought bubble. A man makes a joke playing off the word "Wi-Fi" by saying "Why the 'Fi' not?" A couple of uses of "Oh my God" or "My God." Potty humor includes jokes about Spike's farts, as well as a scene of him doing his business (it's off-camera, but he's grunting, and the human walking him is disgusted and mentions all the burritos Spike ate, and having to "scoop the poop.").

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

A few scenes at a hotel bar and of adults drinking champagne, wine, and cocktails for dinner or receptions. Tom takes a sip and spits it out, Jerry sips too. In one scene, Tom and Jerry look like they're drinking a bottle of sparkling wine, but the label of sparkling apple cider is visible if you look closely. Jerry eats olives out of a martini glass.

Parents need to know that Tom & Jerry is based on the classic Tom and Jerry franchise that constantly (and violently) pits a cartoon mouse and cat against each other. This Manhattan-set adventure -- a mix of computer-generated animation and live-action comedy -- has Jerry Mouse crossing paths with his rival Tom Cat while looking for a place to live. But the main storyline focuses on Kayla ( Chloe Grace Moretz ), a young woman who talks her way into a job at a posh hotel just before the wedding of the year. When Tom and Jerry take their antics to the hotel, chaos ensues. As in all Tom and Jerry outings, you can expect a lot of slapstick cartoon violence, with an added kick here because it's depicted against a live-action backdrop. There are tons of physical comedy sight gags, like characters (mostly Tom) getting electrocuted, hit by lightning, and then electrocuted again, or falling from telephone wires or high-rise windows, or smashing into any conceivable door, roof, window, etc. Tom is even hit by a car. Potty humor is also in the mix, courtesy of Spike the dog (he literally does his business, loudly, in a scene that shows everything but the actual poop). Language includes some insults and a couple of utterances of "my God," characters (both human and animal) are shown sampling drinks, and there's mild romance: Tom falls for a female cat, characters flirt, and a couple shares a wedding-day hug and kiss. Fun for the whole family.

Not the best, not the worst movie out there., what's the story.

In TOM & JERRY -- which is live action except for all of the animals, who are animated (think Roger Rabbit ) -- Jerry Mouse bumps into Tom Cat, who dreams of making it big as a pianist, while looking for housing in Manhattan. Jerry causes Tom's piano to break, and from then on it's war ... until Jerry sneaks into the fancy Royal Palace Hotel and takes up residence. Meanwhile, Kayla ( Chloe Grace Moretz ), who lost a job due to a run-in with Tom and Jerry, talks her way into a new gig at the Royal Palace on the events planning team, which is led by the stuffy Terence ( Michael Peña ). The hotel is hosting the wedding of socialite couple Preeta (Pallavi Sharda) and Ben ( Colin Jost ), so when Jerry is spotted, Kayla enlists Tom's help to capture the clever little mouse.

Is It Any Good?

The latest reboot of this decades-old franchise is neither clever enough to win over new fans nor nostalgic enough to engage the generations raised on the cat-and-mouse shenanigans. While only some of the straight-to-DVD Tom and Jerry cartoons have been better than decent, at least they center on the title characters, even when they're thrown into existing storylines like Robin Hood , The Wizard of Oz , or a big Sherlock Holmes or fairytale crossover . Here, however, Tom and Jerry are secondary characters -- and, what's worse, the main plot isn't especially entertaining, particularly for kids who aren't going to care about a millennial who's trying to keep her day job or a society couple's over-the-top wedding.

There's no doubt that younger kids may still enjoy the physical (if violent) shenanigans at the heart of the action, although it's possible some may feel slightly unsettled by seeing animals repeatedly hurting each other in a realistic, live-action environment. It's just not quite as funny as it is in a purely cartoon world. Despite the presence of well-known actors like Moretz, Peńa, and Jost, as well as Rob Delaney and Ken Jeong , Tom & Jerry 's screenplay is flat and in no way shows off the cast's comedic talent. Just because kids will laugh at the chase scenes and poop jokes doesn't make the movie worthy of a family-night selection. Not that anyone was clamoring for it, but fans of this iconic duo deserve a reboot that's worth their time.

Aggressively mediocre, the updated version of “Tom & Jerry” that premieres in theaters and on HBO Max today is a depressing affair, a film that reminds one of similarly hollow uses of beloved properties like “Yogi Bear” and “The Smurfs.” Although at least those knew to focus on their timeless characters. “Tom & Jerry” barely understands the physical comedy that made the cat and mouse first-round entries in the animated Hall of Fame, focusing instead on a celebrity wedding at a fancy New York hotel and the people who work there. A few sequences of classic T&J comedy aren’t nearly enough to make up for the dull plotting and flat characters in this soulless product, one that will fail equally for adults who grew up on Tom and Jerry, and their kids who have never heard of these characters.

“Tom & Jerry” is a live-action/animated hybrid that takes place in a world in which all animals are animated but all humans are real. But the film barely explores this dynamic in favor of centering a New Yorker named Kayla ( Chloë Grace Moretz ), who basically cons her way into a hospitality job at a fancy Big Apple hotel the week before a high-profile wedding there between household names Ben ( Colin Jost ) and Preeta ( Pallavi Sharda ). As the planning for the wedding gets underway, Kayla discovers that Jerry has taken up residence at the hotel, and so she hires his mortal enemy Tom to take care of the singular infestation before all eyes are on them. Her boss Mr. Dubros ( Rob Delaney ) supports Kayla but co-worker Terence ( Michael Peña ) is eager to take down the newcomer ... just because. Ken Jeong plays the hotel chef. You’ve been warned.

The fatal flaw of “Tom & Jerry”? It’s shockingly unfunny. The moments of creative physical humor are few and far between and there’s not a single verbal joke that stands out. “Tom & Jerry”  needs  extended sequences of animated creativity, and writer Kevin Costello spends way too much time with the dull humans of this version when fans really just want to see the rivalry between two classic characters. A scene in which Tom tries to reach Jerry across a power line hints at what this movie could have been if it had trusted its silent characters in, say, the manner that Aardman trusts fans of Shaun the Sheep. 

While Moretz throws herself into the bad material and tries to make the best of it, everything falls flat around her. Director Tim Story can’t find the rhythm or focus to make the humor work and seems almost purposefully uninterested in his human characters. I get it. They’re boring. But then why are we spending so much time with them? And why are the references so stunningly dated? The film opens with a lengthy sequence of pigeons who will never be seen again singing A Tribe Called Quest’s “Can I Kick It?” (great song, sure, but strange choice in 2021) and a later scene includes references to “ The Silence of the Lambs ” and “ The Warriors .” I can only presume that this script has been sitting around for decades and the people hired to do rewrites to modernize it fell asleep on the job. I don't blame them.

Here’s the time wherein critics often feel like Scrooge coming down on 'harmless animated fun for kids,' but trust this father of three when I report that even the little ones will check out here and find something better to do. And the truth is that this market is crowded right now. Paramount+ drops a new Spongebob movie next week and Disney+ will premiere “Raya and the Last Dragon” for those willing to pay an extra fee. And even on HBO Max, where most people will watch this movie, there are dozens of titles, including almost all of the Studio Ghibli catalog. There are simply better choices than “Tom & Jerry.” Almost anything, really.
