A Charter for Social Work Research in Adult Social Care
King's joins with other organisations in asserting the importance of research in Adult Social Care
Research can be a vital tool to understand how we can improve social work practice. The NIHR Policy Research Unit in Health and Social Care Workforce at King's has joined other organisations including local authorities, universities, the National Institute for Health & Care Research, and other groups in asserting the importance of research in Adult Social Care. The Charter for Social Work Research in Adult Social Care sets a vision for, and outlines a pathway to, greater engagement with research in the social work profession.
In the foreword to the Charter, the Chief Social Worker for Adults in England, Lyn Romeo, notes that ‘Research is never an optional extra, indeed in these challenging times it is more important than ever’.
People in a range of roles – social work practitioners and managers, university researchers and people with lived experience – are increasingly coming together to make this a reality.
The NIHR Policy Research Unit's contribution to the document was led by its Director, Prof Jill Manthorpe.

N2 - Reports on the findings from a literature review which looked at the variety of job roles that social workers perform in England, how the regulation of the profession is working and key areas of concern within the profession. The review was commissioned by the Professional Standards Authority to help inform its work overseeing the regulation of social workers and accrediting voluntary registers for care occupations. For the review searches were carried out on a wide range of online databases; key websites and selected journals. Over 2,000 items were retrieved, published between 2000 and the present, with 300 items selected for full text retrieval. The findings are discussed in the following areas: job roles; responsibilities and tasks; role ambiguity and conflict; team structure and supervision; working with other professionals; sector of employment; and the prevalence of stress, depression and substance misuse. In relation to how well the regulation social work profession is working and it could be improved, only a limited amount of literature was identified.
