Job Description:

The successful applicant will assist DRPP with a program of research on broadening participation in STEM fields. This research is supported by a federal grant that lasts for a few years. 

The research assistant will be responsible for supporting the research by performing a variety of research-related tasks including some research administrative tasks.  The research team currently consists of subteams which are coordinated by a "study lead".  This lead is usually a graduate student, post-graduate, or an undergraduate who has been a team member for more than a year. In addition to the subteam leads, the overall project is coordinated by a project manager who directly works with the lead investigator.  Flexibility, diplomacy, and attention to detail is required due to the overall team structure.

The successful candidate will be able to work with the project manager, the lead investigator and the subteam to which she/he/they are assigned.  Coordinating a subteam involves holding meetings to gauge progress and supervising and assigning day-to-day work of subteam members.  This work may involve conducting literature reviews, managing & preparing data for analysis and analyzing data. 

When necessary, the successful candidate will also be responsible for training newer members of the research team. This could include providing information on the responsible conduct of research, research design, designing surveys in Qualtrics, instruction in spss, sas, stata, or other statistical applications, interpretation of statistical output, instruction in qualitative data analysis applications, coding text and other qualitative data, and writing manuscripts in APA style.  

The successful applicant may also be asked to assist subteams with the recruitment of research participants and with data collection. Given the schedules and availability of the research participants  the successful applicant will need to work during evenings and weekends when necessary. 

The following list contains some additional tasks that the assistant may be engaged in. Depending on the applicant's skills and experience, she/he may be involved in:

-drafting amendments to the IRB documents;

-tracking of participants' completion of study instruments & associated followup procedures;

-documenting research procedures and compiling meeting agendas and minutes;

-conducting literature reviews of relevant topics;

-assisting with project recordkeeping and organizing study materials;

-Assisting with project website development

It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in the dissemination of research findings (e.g. deliver oral presentations, create conference posters, write reports, create material for research-related website, write sections of a manuscript). As the overall research program is a collaborative venture, all team members are encouraged to contribute to dissemination in some way as a co-author with others.

The ideal candidate should have a strong sense of responsibility and proficiency in both written and spoken Cantonese and English. Prior experience in scale development and validation would be considered a plus. Applicants should be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks. They should also have good interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to work independently. Previous work experience in research projects would be preferred. 

The appointee will work on research projects related to welfare attitudes and social policies in Hong Kong. They will be responsible for recruiting participants, conducting interviews and focus group discussions, analyzing the data, writing literature reviews, and performing other assigned research-related duties.

A competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experiences will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.

Position Summary

Columbia School of Social Work (CSSW) has been a leader in social work education and research since 1898. Reporting to the Program Director of the Achievement Initiative at the Columbia School of Social Work the Social Worker provides comprehensive student engagement services to high school students at a partner public high school in West Harlem.

The Social Worker plays a critical role in providing high-quality program services that aid in the development and implementation of service interventions that will help ensure student success in achieving personal and academic milestones.  The Social Worker also develops and implements college, workforce, life skill workshops, and Practicum Learning Instruction for graduate social work students.

THIS POSITION IS 100% GRANT-FUNDED.  CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT IS CONTINGENT UPON THE AVAILABILITY OF FUNDING.

Responsibilities

• Develop and facilitate student-focused programming to promote personal and academic achievement. Develop and facilitate student workshops on life skills, college preparation, and workforce development.
• Provide individual and small group counseling to students and implement social-emotional assessments and personal learning plans with all students on the program roster. Plan and implement local college and career exploratory field trips, and identify referral programs and resources for students in need. 
• Serve as a Practicum Learning Instructor for two graduate social work students each year. Practicum Learning includes reviewing weekly process recordings, providing weekly task supervision, and completing required student evaluations. Provide support and guidance to mentors, tutors, and Personal Learning Plan Coordinators who may be placed at the partner school to work with students.  Supervise 3-4 undergraduate students, mentors, and tutors. 
• Design and manage data collection systems and collaborate with program staff to support them in implementation. Maintain student case files and program attendance records.  Assist in writing program summary reports for contract requirements.  Manage student recruitment, engagement, and retention. 
• Recruit family participants and facilitate family educational workshops; Conduct family home visits and recommend appropriate and necessary referrals to families. 
• Performs other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent related experience required and 0 - 2 years of related experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Social Work.
• Experience in providing both individual and group counseling, as well as experience and a high comfort level in facilitating group workshops.
• Knowledge of youth development principles and the challenges facing low-income, minority, youth, and families in urban environments.
• Experience in program development and implementation.
• Experience in managing and supervising staff.
• Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

Other Requirements

• Must hold a license in Social Work (LMSW).  
• Supervisor in Field Instruction (SIFI) certified or eligible and willing to take the SIFI class beginning in September.
• Experience working in a school setting.
• Experience working with adolescents.
• Ability to work independently and take initiative.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong organizational and leadership skills.
• Proficiency in MS Office Suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint, Access, and other data management programs.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate with parties at all levels, including students, families, faculty, external stakeholders, etc.

This post is part time (4 hours per week) and fixed term until 31/03/25.

We have an opportunity for a Research Assistant to contribute to a collaborative and rights-based project focused on addressing the unmet legal needs of Gypsy Traveller communities in Scotland. This project, in partnership with Making Rights Real, seeks to empower Gypsy Traveller communities to identify their legal needs and co-create calls to action, particularly in anticipation of upcoming international human rights monitoring cycles.

Preliminary conversations with Making Rights Real and members of the Gypsy Traveller community have highlighted some of the profound challenges faced by these communities in Scotland. These include recurring themes of systemic discrimination, prejudice, and a pervasive sense of being unheard. The barriers to accessing justice are multifaceted, including racism, limited awareness of legal rights, and poor access to advice and legal representation.

The successful candidate will work closely with Professor Nicole Busby and Mr Cameron Wong McDermott in undertaking scoping research to identify and address the unmet legal needs of Gypsy Traveller communities in Scotland. This will involve supporting gap analysis and stakeholder mapping, capturing the lived experiences of community members, and co-designing solutions to improve access to justice.

By joining this project, you will contribute to the GO Justice Centre's mission to drive social change through legal education and research, with a particular focus on empowering communities and individuals to use the law to access justice and achieve social and economic inclusion. To this end, you will play a role in supporting Cameron Wong McDermott in managing the work of a new Social Change Law Clinic. We anticipate that the Clinic will work towards producing a report that will serve as evidence for the Council of Europe Advisory Committee on the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities, who will undertake evaluation of the UK’s compliance with the Convention in the first half of 2025.

For example, the wastewater discharged from fish hatcheries can contain uneaten fish food, fish feces, nutrients (especially phosphorus), algae, parasites and pathogens, drugs and other chemicals. To address sustainability challenges in Idaho, we aim to conduct life cycle assessment and input-output analysis to find the major pollution sources and find practical solutions to reduce the environmental emissions, such as blended wood-based biochar that has application in water-nutrient recycling at Fish Farms.
