12 Tips to Score in UPSR 2021

UPSR is one of the most important exams for every child! This post will share with you on how to score in UPSR for students who sit for the exam this year. We will be covering English Essay, Bahasa Melayu Pemahaman and Bahasa Cina Pemahaman

Score in UPSR - English Essay Writing Tips

[TIP 1]  Part A – For students who do not know how to answer the question, they can try to get some words from the short paragraph and write a complete sentence using it. There will be marks allocated for this. 

[TIP 2]   Part B – Most of the questions are related to letter and email. Many of the answers can be obtained from reference books or existing exercises. Doing this is helpful to get a pass. In the first question (3 marks), the answer is usually in the paragraph. Students must try it because it is a bonus question!

[TIP 3]   Part C – 2 Pick 1 question. Adding similes or idioms will greatly help you to score higher marks.

Score in UPSR - Bahasa Melayu Pemahaman Tips

[TIP 4]   Bahagian A consists of 20 multiple choice questions. If you wish to score A, you need to get a minimum of 15 out of 20 answers correct. You can achieve it by doing more exercises.  You can purchase a lot of them online . 

[TIP 5]  Q.21 is ‘fill in the blank’ question. Students should know how to use  Kata Sendi  and  Kata Hubung Imbuhan . Do relevant exercises to improve tyour understanding on this topic. 

[TIP 6]  Q.22 is to write the question based on the answer or vice versa. To score, do more exercise！

[TIP 7]  Q.23 is a question for  Simpulan Bahasa.  Students need to study and understand all the  Simpulan Bahasa  taught in Standard 4, 5 and 6. This question is more challenging, students can gather all the  Simpulan Bahasa  in a notebook and do revision.

[TIP 8]  There will be three short paragraphs. The first question is the easiest and students are required to draw a line to connect the correct answer. All the answers are in the first paragraph, so it is important to get all correct answers.

[TIP 9]   The second paragraph is a little bit tricky as it asks the opinion of the students. If students do not know how to answer a question, they can always write Sa ya setuju  or  Saya tidak setuju . This will earn some marks.

[TIP 10]  The last paragraph is usually a literature question, like  pantun, syair,  or  sajak.  For example:

Kain songket kain sutera,       Dipakai orang pada hari keraian; Amalan Baik dipandang mulia,       Boros dan kedekut jangan amalkan;

To answer the meaning of the 3rd and 4th sentences of this paragraph, students can replace the words  using a synonym.  For example:   Sikap yang baik sentiasa disenangi. Kita haruslah jauhi perangai yang membazir dan lokek. 

Score in UPSR - Bahasa Cina Pemahaman (华语理解) Tips

[TIP 11]  Part 2 (乙组）usually ask about the “character” of a person in a story and give an example. Students should put more effort on describing the “character”. A correct description will earn you more marks. If the description is wrong, but the example is correct, you still can earn some marks.

Students are encouraged to answer in their own words. If the answer is copied from the paragraph, you will not get a full mark. More marks will be given if students use synonym (同义字 ) in their answer.

[TIP 12]  The first question in  Part 2 (乙组）can be obtain directly from paragraph. It is a bonus and make sure students get it correct.

Car, train, bus, and aircraft have made our travel speedy and comfortable. The computer has taken the excess load off our brains. Science has given us life-saving medicine. Surgery can do something miraculous. Space flight is another wonder of science.

Thus through the gifts of science, the man who had once lived in the cave has now landed on the science of the moon is a blessing to us. But it is a curse at the same time. Science has given us speed but has taken away our emotions. It has made our machine. The introduction of the mobile phone has destroyed the art of letter writing. Science has made war more dreadful by inventing sophisticated weapons. Peace has become scarce. Yet there are some abuses of science. It has given us the frightful nuclear weapons that can destroy the whole world.

But who is responsible for making Science a curse? Certainly, it is the evil intention of a few scientists and malignant politicians. We can use fire for cooking our food or burning other’s houses. It is not the fault of fire, but of its users. Likewise, man is responsible for the uses and abuses of science. But science cannot be blamed for this.

Any unwanted loud sound which causes stress and irritation can be termed noise pollution. Of late, sound or noise pollution has adversely affected our normal life in a major way. It is chasing us at almost every step. In schools, colleges, offices, and even hospitals we have an explosion of deafening sound. The main sources of noise pollution are Means of transport, the Use of loudspeakers, the Industrial sector, and the Celebration of festivals and wedding ceremonies. It may cause impairment of hearing and can cause sleep disruption. People who are frequently subjected to a high level of noise pollution may suffer from hypertension, depression, and panic attacks. It may lead to an abnormal increase in heartbeat and heart palpitation. It can also cause migraine headaches, nausea, and dizziness.

Some Measures to Minimise Noise Pollution are Prohibiting the blowing of horns, The use of loudspeakers should be banned, Airports should be located away from residential areas, and People should restrain themselves from lighting firecrackers. In recent times laws have been passed to take effective steps to control sound pollution. People must also be made aware of the dangers of noise pollution.

Television is one of the many wonders of modern science and technology. It was invented in England by the Scottish scientist J.N. Baird in 1928 and the British Broadcasting Corporation was the first to broadcast television images in 1929. Previously the radio helped us hear things from far and near and spread information and knowledge from one corner of the globe to another. But all this was done through sound only. But television combined visual images with sound.

He can freely read a book which is a personal activity and it cannot be shared with others at the same time. In many cases, the habit of watching TV has an adverse effect on the study habits of the young. When we read books, we have to use our intelligence and imagination. But in most cases, TV watching is a passive thing. It may dull our imagination and intelligence.

Essay on Bicycle in English

I have a bicycle. It is a Hercules bicycle and it is black and green in colour. I bought it on my birthday, it was a gift from my father. It has a bell which I love to ring. When it was new, I was not allowed to take it outside my apartment.

I used to ride it in the evening with my other friends. But slowly I learned to ride it on busy road. Now I go to school on it with my classmates who live near my home. In the evening, after I come from tuition, I take my bicycle and go to a playground which is a little far from my home.

Me and my friend’s race with each other. I love to ride my bicycle as it feels like I am flying in the sky. Before I got it, I asked my father for a bicycle which has the gear. All of my friends had it but I did not.

My father asked me to first learn to ride the old bicycle properly without the side wheels. When I finally learned it, I was given this new bicycle.

I fell down a lot of times from this because I did not know how to turn it without the side wheels. I hurt myself on knees many times but slowly I became good at it.

Now I have attached beautiful flower stickers and the sticker of planets on it which I love. On the back, I have painted my name with my paints.

It has made my bicycle more beautiful and it looks different from every other bicycle. I love my bicycle because I feel independent when I ride it.

Format and Marking Scheme for English UPSR

Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) is a major examination that every standard 6 students in primary school must take to graduate. It is equivalent to a Primary School Leaving Exam and is conducted nationwide every year under the supervision of the Ministry of Education (MOE)

Starting from 2016, national school students are required to take six subjects, one extra subject from the previous years. The changes are brought by a particular subject, namely English. Previously, the English subject only had one single paper that students needed to take. However, from 2016, the English paper had been divided into two separate papers, Comprehension and Writing. 

In addition, the latest English UPSR format integrated more questions aligning with High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS), where students will be tested on their own thinking and analytical skills instead of just answering a direct question. 

These questions may be a bit tricky to answer but worry not! In this article, we will discuss more on the marking scheme and tips to score these two papers. Also, see the  latest format for UPSR English Examination too.

UPSR Marking Scheme Paper 1- Comprehension

In this section, we’ll cover the format and marking scheme for Paper 1 Comprehension and Paper 2 Writing. Let’s start by discussing the format for Paper 1 first. This paper has a total mark of 50 marks and the time allocated for the comprehension paper is 1 hour 15 minutes.

Section A- Multiple choice question

In Section A, there are 20 objective type questions that you need to answer in this section and 20 marks to obtain. It is almost self-explanatory for the students that they will receive one mark for each correct answer . 

Do note that you need to shade your answer in the answer sheet as clearly and neatly as possible. This is very important as your answer won’t be accepted by your teacher if you shade it outside of the circle and overlaps with the other answer choices, even if you got it right. 

As for the reason why, you need to shade it very clearly is because, sometimes the examiner will use an automated marking machine to mark the multiple-choice answer sheets. In a wide scaled examination such as UPSR, the examiners are swamped with thousands of papers to mark. 

Thus, they rely on automated machines to hasten the process of marking the papers. The speed and accuracy of the process is greatly increased; however, students and teachers alike are warned that the machine cannot detect faint and unclear shading on the answer sheets, hence it is wise to take precautions to avoid that by using a dark, graphite pencil.

I recommend using 2B pencils since it has been a standard for examinations since back then.

Section B- Subjective questions

Moving on, the subjective type questions will be marked manually by the teachers or examiners. Here, it is important that your handwriting should be legible enough for the examiner to read. There will be 5 main questions, which is made up of several smaller questions. Each question will provide 1 or 2 marks.

The rule of thumb in knowing how to get the maximum score is to identify the 2 marks question. You need to be cautious as the question will always require more than one condition to be fulfilled to get full marks. 

‘An example of this is in Question 21 of Paper 1-Comprehension. The question asks you to write a suitable response for the given pictures.

Firstly, you need to analyze the picture and figure out an appropriate response to give. But that’s not all. The question provides 2 marks! There must be more than that.

So, in this question, the marking is as follows. 1 mark will be given for an appropriate or correct response to the question. Another mark is only given IF you use the correct punctuation and spelling in your response. So don’t get careless! 

Other questions might also ask you to give a reason for your answer. Read the question carefully whether it’s asking you to list more than one example in your answer or if it requires a more detailed answer. A 2 marks question will always require more than a simple answer! 

There will also be a question which requires Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in this section. Students will need to use a different strategy when answering these kinds of questions. You will most likely be asked to give your own opinion instead of depending on the text for answers. 

In this case, your answer needs to be relevant to the question while stating your point on the matter. Do not stray from the topic and make sure your sentence structuring is correct. HOTS questions might seem overwhelming at first but if you understand what it’s asking, you won’t have any problem with that question.

UPSR Marking Scheme Paper 2- Writing

For Paper 2, you will be given 1 hour 15 minutes to answer 3 questions , separated into Section A, Section B and Section C for easier understanding of the format. This paper has a total of 50 marks.

To put it briefly regarding the format of Paper 2, Section A requires the student to fill in the blanks by referring to the information given, usually in the form of poster, dialogue, notes, or pictures. The question serves to assess the students’ ability to construct sentences using the given words and stimulus.

There are 5 blanks to be filled, each will give you 2 marks with a total of 10 marks for Section A questions alone. The marking scheme in this section is straightforward. A correct answer with NO errors will award you 2 marks for each question. A correct answer with spelling or punctuation error will give you 1 mark and a distorted or unclear answer will not be given any marks.

In Section B, you may be given an advertisement or table in which you are required to analyze and use the points given in your writings. This is to assess the student’s ability to transfer information accurately from a text into a given framework. There are 2 questions in this section. 

Question B(i) offers a total of 3 marks if you can list down all the correct answers in the empty spaces. 1 mark for each correct answer with NO errors and zero marks if the answer has any spelling or punctuation errors, distorted and unclear meanings. However, it is in Question B (ii) where it gets quite challenging. 

Question B (ii) will require you to write 50-80 words of either an email, a message, greeting card, letters or speech on your decision or choices. Your answer will be read in a whole and be placed in bands according to the quality of the writing with 12 marks being the highest score you can get in this question.

Super Excellent: 11 & 12 marks

Excellent: 8, 9 & 10 marks

Good: 5, 6 & 7 marks

Satisfactory: 3 & 4 marks

Weak: 0, 1 & 2 marks

To discuss more on the criteria of the bands, we will move to Section C since they share a similarity in the marking scheme.

Section C is where you will be writing 80-100 words story essay of your choice. You are required to write a short essay about the picture(s) using the given words. The examiner will also look at how you will express your ideas creatively while minimizing any grammatical errors. There are 2 questions with different scenarios in this section, however you are only required to answer only 1 question . The total mark for this question is 25 marks and it will also be assessed according to the bands above. 

Super Excellent: 23-25 marks

Excellent: 18-22 marks

Good: 12-17 marks

Satisfactory: 5-11 marks

Weak: 0-4 marks

How Examiner Marks Your UPSR Paper

As a general rule of thumb, your writing will be judged according to several factors; point relevance, the amount of grammatical errors and proficiency in language. Remember that every spelling or punctuation mistakes you make will cost you your marks while interesting words or expressions could award you bonus points.

Now that we have both Section B(ii) and Section C scoring bands ready, let’s look at the criteria the examiner will look at when marking your essays.

Super Excellent Band = 

• All ideas written are very relevant and well organized in well plotted paragraphs.
• Excellent use of language; proficient with hardly any error in grammar and structures.
• High command of vocabulary and an almost perfect punctuation and spelling.

Excellens Band

• Most ideas are relevant and well organized in sequenced paragraphs.
• Excellent use of language; with a few errors in grammar and structures.
• Correct use of vocabulary with a few errors in punctuation and spelling.
• Some ideas are relevant and organized in paragraph(s).
• Proficient use of language; with some errors in both grammar and structures.
• Vocabulary is just sufficient with some errors in spelling and punctuation.

Satisfactory Band

• Ideas are in paragraph(s).
• Frequent errors in grammar and structures with just a sufficient use of language.
• Vocabulary is barely sufficient with frequent errors in spelling and punctuation .
• Most ideas are in chunks and almost disorganized.
• Usage of the language is poor with too many multiple errors in grammar and structures.
• Vocabulary can hardly convey any meaning. Too many spelling and punctuation errors could be found throughout.

Tips to answer multiple-choice, short-answer, and essay-type questions in exams

E xams are a stressful affair and they require smart strategies and techniques to excel. While in-depth learning is crucial, different types of questions demand specific strategies and approaches for solving.

Exams may appear in several formats including multiple choice questions, short answers and essays, each requiring different techniques of answering.

Below is a comprehensive guide to solving exams with different types of question patterns:

TIPS TO ANSWER MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS

• The first and foremost thing to do is to read the questions properly. Often, students miss out on important details due to a lack of focus. Paying attention to each and every piece of information and reading with attention is crucial.
• After reading the question, try to predict the answer without referring to the given options. This increases your chances of selecting the correct answer through educated guessing.
• Using the process of elimination can do wonders. In this method, you eliminate the options you believe are incorrect. This narrows down your choices and aids in identifying the correct response.
• Paying attention to words such as 'always,' 'never,' 'sometimes,' 'most,' 'only,' 'many,' 'but,' and 'often' can help us better understand the sentence. These words tend to alter the meaning of the sentence and hence should be paid attention to and read properly.
•  Understanding concepts thoroughly enables you to grasp the context of questions accurately and answer them correctly.

TIPS TO ANSWER SHORT QUESTIONS

• Read the question properly and comprehend it well. Understand whether you need to give a definition, provide examples, write a brief summary or offer comparisons.
• Write the answer to the point, avoiding unnecessary explanations and using keywords. This increases your chances of scoring higher.
• Use simple language and avoid complex terms, as they can confuse the examiner. The simpler your answer, the higher your score.
• Write your answers in a logical and organised manner. Structure your answers with separate paragraphs, bullet points, flowcharts, tables, etc., as this makes it easier for the examiner to read and understand your answer.
• During the preparatory phase, use colourful pens, flashcards, charts, and drawings to learn concepts well. This method helps in recollecting the answers during exams.
• Indulge in self-testing methods by practicing sample question papers, demo tests, and solving previous year question papers to understand the probable questions and the exam pattern.
• Having a time management strategy in place is important. Allocate time for different types of questions and try to solve them within the given time frame.

TIPS TO WRITE ESSAYS

• Understand the topic well and follow the instructions.
• Brainstorm ideas on the topic and plan the points you intend to include.
• Begin with an informative yet concise introduction, followed by a detailed body and a conclusion that summarizes your essay.
• Ensure the essay is well-structured and divided into a minimum of 3-4 paragraphs.
• Use quotations and examples to support the information you have written.
• Adhere to the specified time and word limits.
• Ensure your essay is written in simple and clear language.
• Always remember to proofread the essay to eliminate grammatical and spelling errors.
• Make reading a regular practice to enhance language proficiency and facilitate a smoother flow of thoughts.

Birthday Party Essay: Birthdays are celebrated in the most gracious way as they come once a year. Inviting friends and relatives for cute parties at home and treating them with special celebrations bring in happiness and joy on the day. My birthday is my favourite day of the entire year. Not because of the presents or the cake or the decorations, but rather because of the special attention and love I get from my close friends and family. The thought of being a year older is always surreal and exciting. I don’t normally like to have birthday parties, but my small surprise birthday party last year was unique and very special.

Some people wouldn’t really define it as a party, because I didn’t have lots of guests and I didn’t play party games. It was my first week at university, and to celebrate my birthday, my friends wished me at 12 AM and gave me plenty of hugs. We decided to watch a movie of my choice, so I chose a horror movie. We ate lots of food, chatted and listened to music, which made for a nice, small party.

Later in the day, I went to see my family, who surprised me with the prettiest birthday cake I’d ever seen. The edge of the cake was completely made of Kit Kat’s, and the top was sprinkled with M&Ms. I blew the candles, cut the cake and cheered as I opened birthday presents. I played around with my younger siblings and watched a movie with them.

I think the reason this birthday party of sorts is memorable for me is because it was my first week in a new place. I was very frightened and nervous, but spending time with friends and family because of my birthday helped me feel more comfortable.
