  • Publication RF Amplification and Filtering Techniques for Cellular Receivers ( University College Dublin. School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 2021 ) Bozorg, Amir   The usage of various wireless standards, such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, and 4G/5G cellular, has been continually increasing. In order to utilize the frequency bands efficiently and to support new communication standards with lower power consumption, lower occupied volume and at reduced costs, multimode transceivers, software defined radios (SDRs), cognitive radios, etc., have been actively investigated. Broadband behavior of a wireless receiver is typically defined by its front-end low-noise amplifier (LNA), whose design must consider trade-offs between input matching, noise figure (NF), gain, bandwidth, linearity, and voltage headroom in a given process technology. Moreover, monolithic RF wireless receivers have been trending toward high intermediatefrequency (IF) or superhetrodyne radios thanks to recent breakthroughs in silicon integration of band-pass channel-select filters. The main motivation is to avoid the common issues in the currently predominant zero/low-IF receivers, such as poor 2nd-order nonlinearity, sensitivity to 1/f (i.e. flicker) noise and time-variant dc offsets, especially in the fine CMOS technology. To avoid interferers and blockers at the susceptible image frequencies that the high-IF entails, band-pass filters (BPF) with high quality (Q) factor components for sharp transfer-function transition characteristics are now required. In addition, integrated low-pass filters (LPF) with strong rejection of out-of-band frequency components are essential building blocks in a variety of applications, such as telecommunications, video signal processing, anti-aliasing filtering, etc. Attention is drawn toward structures featuring low noise, small area, high in-/out-of-band linearity performance, and low-power consumption. This thesis comprises three main parts. In the first part (Chapters 2 and 3), we focus on the design and implementation of several innovative wideband low-noise (transconductance) amplifiers [LN(T)A] for wireless cellular applications. In the first design, we introduce new approaches to reduce the noise figure of the noise-cancellation LNAs without sacrificing the power consumption budget, which leads to NF of 2 dB without adding extra power consumption. The proposed LNAs also have the capability to be used in current-mode receivers, especially in discrete-time receivers, as in the form of low noise transconductance amplifier (LNTA). In the second design, two different two-fold noise cancellation approaches are proposed, which not only improve the noise performance of the design, but also achieve high linearity (IIP3=+4.25 dBm). The proposed LN(T)As are implemented in TSMC 28-nm LP CMOS technology to prove that they are suitable for applications such as sub-6 GHz 5G receivers. The second objective of this dissertation research is to invent a novel method of band-pass filtering, which leads to achieving very sharp and selective band-pass filtering with high linearity and low input referred (IRN) noise (Chapter 4). This technique improves the noise and linearity performance without adding extra clock phases. Hence, the duty cycle of the clock phases stays constant, despite the sophisticated improvements. Moreover, due to its sharp filtering, it can filter out high blockers of near channels and can increase the receiver’s blocker tolerance. With the same total capacitor size and clock duty cycle as in a 1st-order complex charge-sharing band-pass filter (CS BPF), the proposed design achieves 20 dB better out-of-band filtering compared to the prior-art 1st-order CS BPF and 10 dB better out-of-band filtering compared to the conventional 2nd-order C-CS BPF. Finally, the stop-band rejection of the discrete-time infinite-impulse response (IIR) lowpass filter is improved by applying a novel technique to enhance the anti-aliasing filtering (Chapter 5). The aim is to introduce a 4th-order charge rotating (CR) discrete-time (DT) LPF, which achieves the record of stop-band rejection of 120 dB by using a novel pseudolinear interpolation technique while keeping the sampling frequency and the capacitor values constant.   97
  • Publication Frequency Control of Virtual Power Plants ( University College Dublin. School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 2022 ) Zhong, Weilin   ; 0000-0001-6737-4873 The Virtual Power Plant (VPP) concept refers to the aggregation of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) such as solar and wind power plants, Energy Storage Systems (ESSs), flexible loads, and communication networks, all coordinated to operate as a single generating unit. Using as starting point a comprehensive literature review of the VPP concept and its frequency regulation technologies, the thesis proposes a variety of frequency control and state estimation approaches of VPPs, as follows. First, the thesis studies the impact of coordinated frequency control of VPPs on power system transients, in which ESSs are utilized to provide fast frequency regulation. The thesis also proposes a simple yet effective coordinated control of DERs and ESSs able to integrate the total active power output of the DERs, and, thus, to improve the overall power system dynamic performance. The impact of topology on the primary frequency regulation of VPPs is also investigated. With this regard, two types of VPPs topologies are considered, that is, a topology where the DERs that compose the VPP are scattered all-over the transmission grid; and a topology where the DERs are all connected to the same distribution system that is connected to the rest of the transmission grid through a single bus. Next, the thesis proposes a control scheme to improve the dynamic response of power systems through the automatic regulators of converter-based DERs. In this scheme, both active and reactive power control of DERs are varied to regulate both frequency and voltage, as opposed to current practice where frequency and voltage controllers are decoupled. To properly compare the proposed control with conventional schemes, the thesis also defines a metric that captures the combined effect of frequency/voltage response at any given bus of the network. Finally, the thesis presents an on-line estimation method to track the equivalent, time-varying inertia as well as the fast frequency control droop gain provided by VPPs. The proposed method relies on the estimation of the rate of change of the active and reactive power at the point of connection of the VPP with the rest of the grid. It provides, as a byproduct, an estimation of the VPP’s internal equivalent reactance based on the voltage and reactive power variations at the point of connection. Throughout the thesis, the proposed techniques are duly validated through time domain simulations and Monte Carlo simulations, based on real-world network models that include stochastic processes as well as communication delays.   157
  • Publication Low-Complexity Digital Predistortion for 5G Massive MIMO and Handset Transmitters ( University College Dublin. School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 2022 ) Wang, Xiaoyu   The demand for new wireless communication systems to support high mobility and low latency necessitates a rethink of the architecture of wireless communication systems as well as the design of their key components. This thesis presents several novel techniques to solve the major challenges in digital predistortion (DPD) for millimeter wave multi-input multi-output (MIMO) and handset transmitters to lower the hardware cost and computational complexity of the fifth generation (5G) communication systems. The first part of the thesis focuses on the architecture of the MIMO DPD solution for 5G transmitters. To extract DPD model coefficients, a feedback data acquisition path is required. In conventional single-input single-output (SISO) systems, the output is usually acquired directly from the power amplifier (PA) with a coupler. In massive MIMO systems, the number of RF chains is large. Using dedicated feedback paths for each PA separately is not feasible. To lower the hardware cost, a novel data acquisition scheme is proposed to obtain the output signals in far field over the air (OTA) using a single antenna and feedback loop, and then reconstruct the output of each PA. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed OTA data acquisition can accurately reconstruct the output of each PA in the MIMO systems and the DPD solutions derived from the reconstructed data can successfully linearize the nonlinear MIMO transmitters. In the multi-user scenario, the nonlinearity of the transmitters varies with the movement of user equipments (UEs), and the DPD model coefficients need to be updated accordingly. To meet the requirement of high mobility, the complexity of the system update must be low. In the second part of the thesis, we present a new DPD system, where DPD model can be updated fast and accurately without capturing PA output or applying costly model extraction algorithms. In the proposed method, nonlinear characteristics of the PA are encoded into low-dimensional PA features using feature extraction algorithms. To identify DPD model coefficients, PA features are extracted first and the DPD model coefficients are then generated directly by DPD generator with PA features. Experimental results show that the proposed DPD solution can linearize PA with very low complexity compared to that using the conventional solutions. Finally, the focus shifts to handset transmitters. Conventionally, DPD is usually deployed for high power base stations. With the continuously increasing bandwidth, DPD may also be required for handset PAs in 5G communication systems. Different from the models used for base stations, DPD model for handset PAs must have very low complexity because of the stringent power budget limit. At the same time, the tolerance for load mismatch must also be considered. The third part of the thesis analyzes the characteristics of handset PAs with load mismatch and introduces a low-complexity DPD model based on magnitude-selective affine (MSA) function. Experimental results demonstrate that the extended MSA (EMSA) model shows better linearization performance while keeping much lower complexity than the conventional DPD models.   9
  • Publication Circularly Polarized Antennas for 5G Millimetre-Wave Communications ( University College Dublin. School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 2022 ) Sadeghi-Marasht, Samaneh   The need of a higher data rate, lower latency, and cost efficiency led to the fifth-generation (5G) emerging as a new communication standard. This generation includes many unused frequencies with high available bandwidth channels that can provide higher capacities such as millimeter-wave (mm-wave) bands. One of the main challenges of working at high frequencies of this generation is path loss that needs to be addressed. To overcome this issue, a high gain antenna with a small size is required. Consequently, the first major question arises: how to effectively increase the gain and efficiency of the antenna at a high frequency with a small size. Importantly, it is vital to transport as much as data is possible without any sensitivity to the alignment of the transmitter or receiver antenna that can be satisfied by using circularly polarized (CP) radiating waves. Thus, the second research question emerges: how to provide high gain small size antenna with CP at high frequencies. To address the first two major research questions in this thesis we designed a miniature dual-band CP antenna that works at 28 GHz and 38 GHz with high gain. This antenna can be implemented in mobile devices, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and base stations (BSs) because of the small sizes of 11 × 14 × 0.508 mm3. For getting a deep insight into the structure and the design procedures of the dual-band antenna, characteristic mode analysis (CMA) is employed. Note that the CMA is not sensitive to the feeding position and the material in this analysis is not lossy. Therefore, after using CMA, the optimization is conducted in the full-wave simulation as the feeding is added to the structure, and the material is lossy. The single CP antenna covered the bands of 27-28.4 GHz and 34.7-40 GHz, with a maximum gain of 6.3 dBiC and 5.51 dBiC at 28 GHz and 38 GHz, respectively, whereas the radiation efficiency is 94% and 96% with the ARBW of 2.5% and 1.5%. A phased antenna array is then constructed to provide a higher gain for this designed dual-band antenna. In a phased antenna array we consider four designed single element antennas close to each other to create a 2 × 2 antenna array with high gain at 28 GHz and 38 GHz. For a 4 × 4 antenna array, an electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) is used to reduce the mutual coupling between elements in the array. The radiating signals will be sent to different users with circular polarization via electronic beamforming. The position of each antenna element is also optimized to provide the constructive radiating wave towards our desired directions. The array was able to steer the beam between -26.5 to 29.5 degrees for the lower band and -29.5 to 35.5 degrees for the higher band with the maximum gain of 12.8 dBiC and 11.5 dBiC, respectively. Another method to enhance the gain is implementing a lens structure in front of the radiating antenna. Here, a significant challenge is to maintain the CP of the incoming CP wave while the gain is increased. Therefore, the third research question is how to design a lens with the capability of enhancing the gain and keeping the CP when the lens is fed by a CP antenna source. Concerning the third major research question, in this thesis, we designed a CP lens structure. First, a multi-layer lens with a thickness of 2.03 mm was designed, and then a one-layer lens structure with a thickness of just 0.508 mm was made. The lens was located in front of different radiating antennas. These lens structures resulted in significant gain enhancement for various feeding antennas working at 28 GHz. The unit cell of the one-layer lens can provide a broad phase shift compared to the multi-layer counterpart. The proposed lens structures not only increased the gain of the incoming CP wave but also kept its polarization to overcome the issues of reflectivity, absorption, inclement weather, and mis   16
  • Publication Contributions to the theory and development of low-jitter bang-bang integrated frequency synthesizers ( University College Dublin. School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 2022 ) Avallone, Luca   The advent of next-generation wireless standards demands ever-increasing data-rate communication systems. It mainly involves a higher carrier frequency to take advantage of wider bandwidth channels and more complex modulation schemes to pack more information into each symbol. In this context, the bottleneck is represented by the frequency synthesizer used to generate the local oscillator signal for the transceiver, which has to operate under stringent low output jitter requirements. Such performance must be provided at low power dissipation and area consumption in order to meet the requirements of low-cost and high integration level of the modern communication systems. The digital phase locked loop architecture can meet the required jitter performance while synthesizing fractional-N frequencies. Such PLLs offer significant advantages over their traditional analog counterpart in terms of area occupation, flexibility and scalability in advanced deep sub-µm CMOS technologies. The digital PLL topology based on a bang-bang phase detector, denoted bang-bang PLL, which is a single bit digital phase detector, leads to a less complex and more power-efficient architecture, but, on the other hand, it also introduces a hard nonlinearity in the loop, making the analysis of the bang-bang topology more challenging than in the multi-bit case. A comprehensive phase noise analysis of bang-bang digital PLLs is presented which overcomes the limitations of previous models and it is valid in all cases where physical noise sources (i.e. reference and DCO) are dominant with respect to quantization errors. In particular, (i) input-referred jitter is estimated by means of a linear time-domain analysis derived from a nonlinear DPLL model, and (ii) phase noise spectra are predicted using a discrete-time domain model that accounts for time-variant effects that arise from the intrinsic multirate nature of the DPLL. The possibility of accurately determining the DPLL jitter and phase noise spectra, enabled by the novel analysis presented in this thesis, is key to significantly speeding up the design-space exploration phase, since it allows one to perform quick and precise parametric sweeps. However, even when designed properly, bang-bang PLLs are affected by the unavoidable bang-bang phase detector quantization noise, which is added on top of the intrinsic reference and DCO phase noise. The quantization noise can be appreciated in the PLL's output spectrum as increased in band noise with respect to the analog counterpart, that, in fact, still achieves superior performance in terms of jitter-power. This results in worse integrated jitter performance for the same intrinsic levels of reference and oscillator phase noise. To overcome the binary phase detector quantization noise in DPLLs, state-of-the-art works rely on a multi-bit time-to-digital converter to digitize the PLL phase error with a physical resolution below the input jitter, leading to increased design complexity, with an associated area and power penalty. In order to overcome the ultimate limit of the bang-bang PLL, a digital PLL based on a bang-bang phase detector with adaptively optimized noise shaping has been fabricated in a 28nm CMOS process. The prototype occupies a core area of 0.21 mm2 and draws 10.8 mW power from a 0.9 V supply. The integrated jitter is 69.52 fs and 80.72 fs for the integer-N and the fractional-N case, respectively. Achieving a jitter-power figure-of-merit of -251.5 dB in fractional-N mode, the proposed system effectively bridges the gap to analog implementations. The first chapter of this work is introductory, and is intended to give some background information needed to underpin the remaining part of the thesis. The following chapters, 2, 3 and 4, collect the results achieved during the PhD activity, and each of them is associated with a publication. In the last chapter, conclusions are drawn and the open points are discussed in order to be considered for future work.   227

  • Item No Preview Available A Multifunctional Smart Field-Programmable Radio Frequency Surface Li, Tianzhi ( 2023-04 ) Wireless communication technology has completely transformed the way we communicate and access information. It operates on the principles of electromagnetic wave propagation, as described by Maxwell's equations. The scope of wireless communication is vast and includes satellite communication, handheld device communication, and Internet of Things (IoT), which have revolutionized fields of industry, healthcare, transportation, education, and entertainment. As demand for faster and more reliable communication continues to grow, a range of wireless communication standards has been developed, including WiFi, BLE, cellular networks, near-field communication (NFC), and ZigBee, each operating at a unique frequency range. Antennas that can operate across multiple communication standards have remained a challenge due to the interdependent factors of antenna geometry, size, and RF characteristics. As the number of devices with wireless connectivity increases dramatically, the spectrum resource is getting limited, which results in congestion and reduced performance. Reconfigurable antennas have been intensively studied in the last few decades to mitigate this challenge. Although reconfigurability in operating frequency, radiation pattern and polarization have been implemented, limitations including lack of programmability, pattern diversity, and self-adaptive capability against environmental interference exist. To address these limitations, we proposed a new concept called Field-programmable RF surface (FPRFS), which allows for the control of current flow on the surface to achieve desired antenna characteristics and impedance matching capabilities. This work starts with the theoretical analysis and creates the mathematical model for the FPRFS in antenna, impedance matching network, and filter applications. Our research demonstrated the reconfigurability of FPRFS antennas in operating frequency, radiation pattern, and polarization reconfigurability with radiation gain and efficiency levels that are comparable to those of conventional fixed patch antennas and enhanced immunity to surrounding obstacles. We developed a software algorithm for the FPRFS that enables it to automatically optimize its configuration in real-time, thereby adapting to changing load impedance or environmental interferences.

The EECS Department requires that students submit a thesis proposal during their first semester as MEng students, before they have begun substantial work on the thesis. Thesis proposals are brief documents (1500-2500 words) which focus on the ultimate, novel goals of your research project. While it is nearly impossible to extrapolate exactly what could (or will) happen during the course of your research, your proposal serves as a thoughtful approximation of the impact that your project could have as new work in the field, as well as an agreement between you and your thesis research advisor on the scope of your thesis.

Finding a Thesis Research Advisor

MEng thesis research advisors are not required to be EECS faculty members; however, research advisors from other departments, or non-faculty research advisors, must be approved by the EECS Undergraduate Office .

It is the sole responsibility of a student in the MEng program to find a thesis research advisor. There are many ways to go about this process:

  • If you are still an undergraduate, look for UROP or SuperUROP opportunities . Many MEng projects stem from UROPs.
  • Consider what areas you might be interested in working in, and search relevant lab webpages for people working in those areas. Many EECS MEng students work in RLE, CSAIL, MTL, LIDS, or the Media Lab, but you don’t need to limit your search to these labs. If you find a person whom you think might be a good match, reach out to them with a short email explaining why you’d be interested in MEng opportunities with their group.
  • Attend seminars held by research labs that interest you.
  • Reach out to instructors you know who teach in the area you’re interested in, as they may be able to point you in a useful direction. Instructors that you’ve gotten to know well (even if they don’t work in your area of interest) as well as your advisor are also useful resources, for the same reasons.
  • Keep an open mind to opportunities that are outside of your area. Many students do very interesting MEng projects with faculty from other departments.
  • Subscribe to the EECS Opportunities List , which often has advertisements for MEng projects.

Writing Your Proposal

Once you’ve found a thesis research advisor, you should get to work proposing a thesis. Your thesis proposal should be completed while you are in continual conversation with your research advisor. The proposal itself should be divided into five sections:

  • The introduction, to introduce the reader to the topic of your thesis.
  • Related work, which describes previously-published work that is relevant to your thesis.
  • Proposed work, which describes the work you will be doing for your thesis.
  • Timeline, which breaks down your proposed work into concrete steps, each with an approximate due date. At a minimum, you should describe what you plan to do each semester of your MEng, but many students give a timeline that is broken down by months, not semesters.
  • A bibliography

Submitting Your Proposal

The thesis proposal, and research advisor approval of the proposal, are typically due on the last day of classes each semester (see here for official deadlines) and there are no formatting requirements for the thesis proposal. When you are ready to submit, you can do so here . If you change your topic or research advisor, you should submit a new proposal.

6-A students must also submit a thesis proposal release letter. These letters can be sent to [email protected] and should follow one of the two templates below.

This page focuses on how to do an in-depth literature review for a dissertation, thesis, grant application or lengthy term paper in electrical engineering.

Library Account Is your library account clear of fines?   If not, you may not be allowed to check out more books nor renew books you already have.  All library notices are sent via email to your "asu.edu" address; if you prefer to receive email at a different address make sure you have forwarded your asu.edu correctly.  Also, make sure that your spam filter allows the library email to come through. 

Illiad (Interlibrary Loan) Account   If you don't already have an ILLiad account, please register for one.  Interlibrary loan services will get you material not available at the ASU Library and also scan or deliver materials from the libraries on the other ASU campuses.

Determine the Project's Scope.

Do you know what you are looking for?  Can you describe your project using one simple sentence or can you phrase the project as a question?  Without a clear idea of the project, you may not be able to determine which are the best resources to search, what terminology should be used in those resources, and if the results are appropriate and sufficient.    

If you're having difficulty getting your project described succinctly, try using a PICO chart to identify the concepts involved:

  • P is the popluation, problem, predicament or process
  • I is the intervention or improvement
  • C is what you'll compare your intervention/improvment to, and
  • O is the outcome (or results of the comparison of I and C ) 

For example: 

Your client, the owner of a nuclear power generating facility, has had several less than optimal safety inspections recently.  The inspectors have singled out operator error as a major concern and have required changes in employee training.  But is more training the solution?  The employees complain that the plant's poorly designed control room hampers their ability to respond to non-standard situations.  Could a redesign improve performance and decrease the occurance of unsafe events?   Your client wants more than just your opinion, he wants to see the data to back it up.   So, what can you find in the literature?

Here's one way that the PICO chart could be filled out:     

  • P =   nuclear power safety  
  • I  = human factors engineering
  • C  =  additional training; little or no human factors engineering used  
  • O = accident rate or safety inspection comparison

And here are examples of possible search statements:  

  • I am looking for ways that human factors engineering can improve safety in the nuclear power industry.
  • Is additional training or employing human factors engineering the better method for reducing safety violations in a nuclear power plant? 

Your research will always start with a " P AND I " search; those are the most important pieces of the puzzle.  However, once you have the results from that search, you'll need to know where you want to go with those results; that's when the C and O concepts need to be considered.  

 Also, don't forget --- determine if your project has limits.  For example:

  • Are you reviewing the literature only within a specific time frame?
  • Are you looking at English-language material only?
  • Are you considering research from just the United States or worldwide?
  • Are there types of material you won't be covering (trade magazines, patents, technical reports, etc.)?  

Take the simple sentence or question that describes what you are looking for.  What are the concepts in the sentence? Are there synonyms that describe the same concept?   If you filled out a PICO chart, concentrate on the  P (problem) and the  I (intervention) for the concept chart.  

Concept Chart:

Concept 1:   _______  OR _______  OR _______  AND Concept 2:   _______   OR   _______  OR   _______  AND Concept 3:  _______  OR  _______  OR   _______ 

  Example:  

I am looking for ways that human factors engineering can improve safety in the nuclear power industry. 

Concept 1:   nuclear power    OR _ nuclear industry _____   AND Concept 2:   _safety___  OR   _accident prevention____   AND Concept 3: _ human factors engineering ___   

What resources you'll use for your literature review depends on what types of materials you want to find.  

  • Background Information The more you know about a topic, the better you'll be able to research it.  You'll be familiar with the terminology, understand the underlining science/technology and be aware of the issues in the field. Most importantly, you'll be able to understand what you've retrieved from your search.  But no matter how much you know before hand you'll likely run across terms and concepts with which you're unfamiliar.    Materials such as encyclopedias, dictionaries and handbooks will not only help you learn about the basics of your topic before you begin your search but they'll also help you understand the terminology used in the documents you found from your literature review.    You'll find these types of resources listed on the Dictionaries and Handbooks pages on this guide.
  • Books The large size of books (usually 100-500 pages) allows a topic to be studied braodly, covering many different issues.  Conversely, the large size also allows for a specific aspect of the topic to be covered in great detail.  Because of the time it takes to publish, sci-tech books generally do not contain the most current information. To find print and online books from both the ASU Library as well as in other libraries, see the Books page on this guide.
  • Conference Papers Scientists and engineers frequently present new findings at conferences before these findings are written up in journal articles or books.  Not every conference, however, publishes it proceedings.  In some cases, conferences publish only a few of the papers presented but not all.   Many resources that help you find journal articles, may also be used to find conference papers, see the Articles page on this guide.
  • Journal and Trade Magazine Articles Articles in journals (also called magazines) are short, usually 5-20 pages in length and cover a specific finding, experiment or project.  Articles in scholary journals are usually written by academics or professional scientists/engineers and are aimed at others at the same level.   Articles in trade journals/magazines are written by the journal staff and report on industry news suchs as sales, mergers, prices, etc.   To find journal and trade magazine articles, use the resources listed on the Articles page on this guide. 
  • Patents Patents are grants from governments that gives the inventor certain rights of manufacture.  Patents provide a wealth of information for how a technology is being advanced and by which companies.  It is frequently stated that 80% of the information in patents never appears elsewhere in the literature. 
  • To identify patents granted in the U.S. and internationally see the " Searching for Patents " guide.
  • To see statistical information for U.S. patents by technology class see the US Patent and Trademark's website.
  • Technical Reports Technical reports are part of the "gray literature";  gray literature refers to documents that are not published commercially, hence they are difficult to both identify and find.  Technical reports focus on a specific experiment or research project and are meant to convey the results of the experiment or project back to the funding organization.  In the United States, common sources of technical reports are the government agencies that sponsor research projects.  Reports generated within a private corporation and funded soley by that corporation are seldom ever available to anyone outside of the company.      To find technical reports, use the resources listed on the Technical Reports page on this guide.     

Search, Read, Refine and Repeat

Now it's time to apply your search strategy in the resources you've decided to use.

  • Use the Advanced Search feature (or whatever search is set up with the 3 lines of boxes) and enter your search strategy just as you recorded in your search strategy chart.  Don't forget to set your limits.   If the resource only provides a single search box, rearrange your chart from vertical into horizontal so that the search statement looks like this:   (Concept#1 OR synonym) AND (Concept#2 OR synonym) AND (Concept#3 OR synonym) Example: (nuclear power OR nuclear industry) AND (safety OR accident prevention) AND (human factors engineering)
  • Examine the results to find the most appropriate items.  Keep your one-sentence project description (and/or your PICO chart) in mind to help you stay on track.
  • Export the records/citations you want to keep into a citation manager.
  • If there are subjects (may also be called subject headings, index terms, descriptors or controlled vocabulary) assigned to each item, make sure that those also transferred into a citation manager.  If not, add them manually.
  • Get the full text of the items 
  • Read the full text of the items and look at the subjects assigned to the item and consider:
  • Do I have to change (narrow) my topic to something more specific because I'm finding way too much? 
  • Do I have to change (broaden) my topic because I can't find enough about it? 
  • Is there additional terminology for my topic/concepts that I hadn't included in my original search?
  • Redo your search strategy according to what you found in step #6 and rerun the search in the resources again.

College Recognizes Graduate Student Excellence Awardees

From going above and beyond in campus safety to advancing the campus' understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion, the 2024 College of Engineering Graduate Student Excellence Awards recipients have made outstanding contributions to research, service, safety and DEI. 

This year, the four doctoral students honored are Jeff Lai, Alex San Pablo, Abdolhossein "Hossein" Edalati and Sophie Orr.   

Zhengfeng (Jeff) Lai

Excellence in Graduate Student Research

Zhengfeng (jeff) lai, electrical and computer engineering.

Lai is an outstanding researcher who stands to advance the possibilities of computer vision and machine learning. Throughout his graduate program, he published 14 articles (11 first-authored), which have already received over 200 citations. Notably, Lai won a Best Paper Award at the 2022 Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition for pioneering research on a semi-supervised learning framework that does not make assumptions about unlabeled data. While pursuing his doctorate, he also filed a patent application for a project where he successfully applied machine learning to detect congenital heart disease in newborns. Lai graduated in December 2023 and currently works as a machine learning research scientist at Apple, where he has revolutionized the company's use of large-scale pre-training and multimodal modeling.  

Alex San Pablo

Excellence in Graduate Student Service & Leadership

Alex san pablo, civil and environmental engineering  .

Since joining the College of Engineering, San Pablo has mentored undergraduate and graduate students and post-doctoral researchers in her geotechnical engineering group, fostering a community of excellence, collaboration and inclusion. She frequently contributes to workshops and events hosted by the Geotechnical Graduate Student Society that serve to advance the careers of its students and participates in outreach programs to uplift local communities and programs like STEM for Girls. Many of San Pablo's undergraduate mentees have gone on to graduate school because of her leadership, with several doctoral and master's students attributing their current success at UC Davis to her support. Moreover, it is telling that professors, staff members and students alike applaud San Pablo's leadership abilities, all noting her impressive work ethic and ability to lead with compassion and understanding.   

Abdolhossein "Hossein" Edalati

Excellence in Graduate Student Safety

Abdolhossein "hossein" edalati, biological systems engineering.

Edalati has made significant contributions to the safety of the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering. Within the lab of his advisor, Professor Ruihong Zhang, his diligence has led him to not only serve as a lab manager, safety contact and point person for training all new lab members but also as the lead for the lab's annual safety training since 2018. For the department, he has served as the interim BAE Chem Lab Manager, where he was instrumental in arranging the safe transport of hundreds of unnecessary chemicals to hazardous waste. While he no longer holds the interim position, Edalati continues to assist where needed and fills in when other members of the BAE Safety Team are unavailable.   

Sophie Orr

Excellence in Graduate Student Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Sophie orr, biomedical engineering.

Orr consistently inspires and advances the conversation around DEI for the college and UC Davis. As a fourth-year Ph.D. student, Orr provides DEI training to the campus community and pursues research in addition to her dissertation on musculoskeletal tissues to best address equitable access to orthopedic care and education. She challenges her colleagues to think critically about producing science that is grounded in equity. Orr has developed a first-year seminar with Professor Blaine Christiansen, her advisor and chair of the Biomedical Engineering Graduate Group,  that explores the origins of anti-fat messaging in today's society and has presented on topics such as weight bias in orthopedics at national symposia. She is currently the co-chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering's Health, Equity and Wellness, or HEW, committee and is chair of the HEW Department Climate subcommittee.

CEE Seminar Series Spring 2024 "In Situ, Dynamic and Cyclic Response of the Deep Medium Dense Sands at Portland International Airport"

Abstract:  Deep (25 m), in-situ, blast-liquefaction experiments were conducted at Portland International Airport to provide a design basis for the deep soil mixing used to mitigate liquefaction-induced differential settlements below the South Runway without the possible effects of sample disturbance, small sample-size effects and artificial drainage conditions. This presentation describes the experimental approach, blast-induced ground motions and quantification and evaluation of dynamic constitutive soil properties from the linear-elastic to the nonlinear-inelastic regime with loading that produced direct simple shear-equivalent shear strains larger than 1%. Ground motions are interpreted in terms of the equivalent number of stress cycles, Neq and the cyclic stress ratios, CSRs, generated during blast-induced shearing. The resulting in-situ CRR-Neq curves are compared to those from SPT-, CPT- and Vs- and case history-based liquefaction triggering models, all of which were smaller than that associated with the in-situ cyclic resistance. 

Bio:  Stuedlein is professor of geotechnical engineering in the School of Civil and Construction Engineering at Oregon State University, which he joined in 2009 following a five-year period as consultant in Seattle. He is the chair of the Geo-Institute Soil Improvement Committee, editor at the ASCE Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, and editorial board member at three other journals. Stuedlein has received several awards for his work, most recently the 2023 ASCE J. James R. Croes Medal and 2023 Fredlund Award. The results of his research have been disseminated through 150+ publications and consultation for PacNW firms and focuses on ground improvement and liquefaction mitigation, dynamic in-situ and cyclic laboratory testing, full-scale experimental and numerical investigations of soil-structure interaction and probabilistic geotechnics.

CEGE Spring Graduation Celebration and Order of the Engineer

Forty-seven graduates of the undergraduate and grad student programs (pictured above) in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering took part in the Order of the Engineer on graduation day. Distinguished Speakers at this departmental event included Katrina Kessler (MS EnvE 2021), Commissioner of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, and student Brian Balquist. Following this event, students participated in the college-wide Commencement Ceremony at 3M Arena at Mariucci. 

UNIVERSITY & DEPARTMENT

The University of Minnesota’s Crookston, Duluth, and Rochester campuses have been awarded the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement, joining the Twin Cities (2006, 2015) and Morris campuses (2015), and making the U of M the country’s first and only university system at which every individual campus has received this selective designation. Only 368 from nearly 4,000 qualifying U.S. universities and colleges have been granted this designation.

CEGE contributed strongly to the College of Science and Engineering’s efforts toward sustainability research. CEGE researchers are bringing in over $35 million in funded research to study carbon mineralization, nature and urban areas, circularity of water resources, and global snowfall patterns. CEGE’s new program for a one-year master’s degree in structural engineering is now accepting applicants for Fall 2024. After retiring from Baker-Tilly,  NICK DRAGISICH  (BCE 1977) has taken on a new role: City Council member in Lake Elmo, Minnesota. After earning his BCE from the University of Minnesota, Dragisich earned a master’s degree in business administration from the University of St. Thomas. Dragisich retired in May from his position as managing director at Baker Tilly, where he had previously served as firm director. Prior to that, he served as assistant city manager in Spokane, Washington, was the city administrator and city engineer in Virginia, Minnesota, and was mayor of Chisholm, Minnesota—all adding up to more than 40 years of experience in local government. Dragisich was selected by a unanimous vote. His current term expires in December 2024.

PAUL F. GNIRK  (Ph.D. 1966) passed away January 29, 2024, at the age of 86. A memorial service was held Saturday, February 24, at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSM&T), where he started and ended his teaching career, though he had many other positions, professional and voluntary. In 2018 Paul was inducted into the SDSM&T Hardrocker Hall of Fame, and in 2022, he was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame, joining his mother Adeline S. Gnirk, who had been inducted in 1987 for her work authoring nine books on the history of south central South Dakota.

ROGER M. HILL  (BCE 1957) passed away on January 13, 2024, at the age of 90. His daughter, Kelly Robinson, wrote to CEGE that Roger was “a dedicated Gopher fan until the end, and we enjoyed many football games together in recent years. Thank you for everything.”

KAUSER JAHAN  (Ph.D. 1993, advised by Walter Maier), PE, is now a civil and environmental engineering professor and department head at Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering. Jahan was awarded a 3-year (2022- 2025), $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). The grant supports her project, “WaterWorks: Developing the New Generation of Workforce for Water/Wastewater Utilities,” for the development of educational tools that will expose and prepare today’s students for careers in water and wastewater utilities.

SAURA JOST  (BCE 2010, advised by Timothy LaPara) was elected to the St. Paul City Council for Ward 3. She is part of the historic group of women that make up the nation’s first all-female city council in a large city.

The 2024 ASCE Western Great Lakes Student Symposium combines several competitions for students involved in ASCE. CEGE sent a large contingent of competitors to Chicago. Each of the competition groups won awards: Ethics Paper 1st place Hans Lagerquist; Sustainable Solutions team 1st place overall in (qualifying them for the National competition in Utah in June); GeoWall 2nd place overall; Men’s Sprint for Concrete Canoe with rowers Sakthi Sundaram Saravanan and Owen McDonald 2nd place; Product Prototype for Concrete Canoe 2nd place; Steel Bridge (200 lb bridge weight) 2nd place in lightness; Scavenger Hunt 3rd place; and Aesthetics and Structural Efficiency for Steel Bridge 4th place.

Students competing on the Minnesota Environmental Engineers, Scientists, and Enthusiasts (MEESE) team earned second place in the Conference on the Environment undergraduate student design competition in November 2023. The CEGE CLASS OF 2023 raised money to help reduce the financial barrier for fellow students taking the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, a cost of $175 per test taker. As a result of this gift, they were able to make the exam more affordable for 15 current CEGE seniors. CEGE students who take the FE exam pass the first time at a rate well above national averages, demonstrating that CEGE does a great job of teaching engineering fundamentals. In 2023, 46 of 50 students passed the challenging exam on the first try.

This winter break, four CEGE students joined 10 other students from the College of Science and Engineering for the global seminar, Design for Life: Water in Tanzania. The students visited numerous sites in Tanzania, collected water source samples, designed rural water systems, and went on safari. Undergraduate Honor Student  MALIK KHADAR  (advised by Dr. Paul Capel) received honorable mention for the Computing Research Association (CRA) Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award for undergraduate students who show outstanding research potential in an area of computing research.

GRADUATE STUDENTS

AKASH BHAT  (advised by William Arnold) presented his Ph.D. defense on Friday, October 27, 2023. Bhat’s thesis is “Photolysis of fluorochemicals: Tracking fluorine, use of UV-LEDs, and computational insights.” Bhat’s work investigating the degradation of fluorinated compounds will assist in the future design of fluorinated chemicals such that persistent and/or toxic byproducts are not formed in the environment.

ETHAN BOTMEN  (advised by Bill Arnold) completed his Master of Science Final Exam February 28, 2024. His research topic was Degradation of Fluorinated Compounds by Nucleophilic Attack of Organo-fluorine Functional Groups.

XIATING CHEN , Ph.D. Candidate in Water Resources Engineering at the Saint Anthony Falls Laboratory is the recipient of the 2023 Nels Nelson Memorial Fellowship Award. Chen (advised by Xue Feng) is researching eco-hydrological functions of urban trees and other green infrastructure at both the local and watershed scale, through combined field observations and modeling approaches.

ALICE PRATES BISSO DAMBROZ  has been a Visiting Student Researcher at the University of Minnesota since last August, on a Doctoral Dissertation Research Award from Fulbright. Her CEGE advisor is Dr. Paul Capel. Dambroz is a fourth year Ph.D. student in Soil Science at Universidade Federal de Santa Maria in Brazil, where she studies with her adviser Jean Minella. Her research focuses on the hydrological monitoring of a small agricultural watershed in Southern Brazil, which is located on a transition area between volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Its topography, shallow soils, and land use make it prone to runoff and erosion processes.

Yielding to people in crosswalks should be a very pedestrian topic. Yet graduate student researchers  TIANYI LI, JOSHUA KLAVINS, TE XU, NIAZ MAHMUD ZAFRI  (Dept.of Urban and Regional Planning at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology), and Professor Raphael Stern found that drivers often do not yield to pedestrians, but they are influenced by the markings around a crosswalk. Their work was picked up by the  Minnesota Reformer.

TIANYI LI  (Ph.D. student advised by Raphael Stern) also won the Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation (DDET) Fellowship for the third time! Li (center) and Stern (right) are pictured at the Federal Highway Administration with Latoya Jones, the program manager for the DDET Fellowship.

The Three Minute Thesis Contest and the Minnesota Nice trophy has become an annual tradition in CEGE. 2023’s winner was  EHSANUR RAHMAN , a Ph.D. student advised by Boya Xiong.

GUANJU (WILLIAM) WEI , a Ph.D. student advised by Judy Yang, is the recipient of the 2023 Heinz G. Stefan Fellowship. He presented his research entitled Microfluidic Investigation of the Biofilm Growth under Dynamic Fluid Environments and received his award at the St. Anthony Falls Research Laboratory April 9. The results of Wei's research can be used in industrial, medical, and scientific fields to control biofilm growth.

BILL ARNOLD  stars in an award-winning video about prairie potholes. The Prairie Potholes Project film was made with the University of Delaware and highlights Arnold’s NSF research. The official winners of the 2024 Environmental Communications Awards Competition Grand Prize are Jon Cox and Ben Hemmings who produced and directed the film. Graduate student Marcia Pacheco (CFANS/LAAS) and Bill Arnold are the on-screen stars.

Four faculty from CEGE join the Center for Transportation Studies Faculty and Research Scholars for FY24–25:  SEONGJIN CHOI, KETSON ROBERTO MAXIMIANO DOS SANTOS, PEDRAM MORTAZAVI,  and  BENJAMIN WORSFOLD . CTS Scholars are drawn from diverse fields including engineering, planning, computer science, environmental studies, and public policy.

XUE FENG  is coauthor on an article in  Nature Reviews Earth and Environment . The authors evaluate global plant responses to changing rainfall regimes that are now characterized by fewer and larger rainfall events. A news release written at Univ. of Maryland can be found here: https://webhost.essic. umd.edu/april-showers-bring-mayflowers- but-with-drizzles-or-downpours/ A long-running series of U of M research projects aimed at improving stormwater quality are beginning to see practical application by stormwater specialists from the Twin Cities metro area and beyond. JOHN GULLIVER has been studying best practices for stormwater management for about 16 years. Lately, he has focused specifically on mitigating phosphorous contamination. His research was highlighted by the Center for Transportation Studies.

JIAQI LI, BILL ARNOLD,  and  RAYMOND HOZALSKI  published a paper on N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) precursors in Minnesota rivers. “Animal Feedlots and Domestic Wastewater Discharges are Likely Sources of N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) Precursors in Midwestern Watersheds,” Environmental Science and Technology (January 2024) doi: 10.1021/acs. est.3c09251

ALIREZA KHANI  contributed to MnDOT research on Optimizing Charging Infrastructure for Electric Trucks. Electric options for medium- and heavy-duty electric trucks (e-trucks) are still largely in development. These trucks account for a substantial percentage of transportation greenhouse gas emissions. They have greater power needs and different charging needs than personal EVs. Proactively planning for e-truck charging stations will support MnDOT in helping to achieve the state’s greenhouse gas reduction goals. This research was featured in the webinar “Electrification of the Freight System in Minnesota,” hosted by the University of Minnesota’s Center for Transportation Studies. A recording of the event is now available online.

MICHAEL LEVIN  has developed a unique course for CEGE students on Air Transportation Systems. It is the only class at UMN studying air transportation systems from an infrastructure design and management perspective. Spring 2024 saw the third offering of this course, which is offered for juniors, seniors, and graduate students.

Research Professor  SOFIA (SONIA) MOGILEVSKAYA  has been developing international connections. She visited the University of Seville, Spain, November 13–26, 2023, where she taught a short course titled “Fundamentals of Homogenization in Composites.” She also met with the graduate students to discuss collaborative research with Prof. Vladislav Mantic, from the Group of Continuum Mechanics and Structural Analysis at the University of Seville. Her visit was a part of planned activities within the DIAGONAL Consortium funded by the European Commission. CEGE UMN is a partner organization within DIAGONAL, represented by CEGE professors Mogilevskaya and Joseph Labuz. Mantic will visit CEGE summer 2024 to follow up on research developments and discuss plans for future collaboration and organization of short-term exchange visits for the graduate students from each institution. 

DAVID NEWCOMB  passed away in March. He was a professor in CEGE from 1989–99 in the area of pavement engineering. Newcomb led the research program on asphalt materials characterization. He was the technical director of Mn/ROAD pavement research facility, and he started an enduring collaboration with MnDOT that continues today. In 2000, he moved from Minnesota to become vice-president for Research and Technology at the National Asphalt Pavement Association. Later he moved to his native Texas, where he was appointed to the division head of Materials and Pavement at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, a position from which he recently retired. He will be greatly missed.

PAIGE NOVAK  won Minnesota ASCE’s 2023 Distinguished Engineer of the Year Award for her contributions to society through her engineering achievements and professional experiences.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) announced ten inaugural (NSF) Regional Innovation Engines awards, with a potential $1.6 billion investment nationally over the next decade. Great Lakes ReNEW is led by the Chicago-based water innovation hub,  Current,  and includes a team from the University of Minnesota, including PAIGE NOVAK. Current will receive $15 mil for the first two years, and up to $160 million over ten years to develop and grow a water-focused innovation engine in the Great Lakes region. The project’s ambitious plan is to create a decarbonized circular “blue economy” to leverage the region’s extraordinary water resources to transform the upper Midwest—Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Brewing one pint of beer generates seven pints of wastewater, on average. So what can you do with that wastewater?  PAIGE NOVAK  and her team are exploring the possibilities of capturing pollutants in wastewater and using bacteria to transform them into energy.

BOYA XIONG  has been selected as a recipient of the 2024 40 Under 40 Recognition Program by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists. The award was presented at the 2024 AAEES Awards Ceremony, April 11, 2024, at the historic Howard University in Washington, D.C. 

JUDY Q. YANG  received a McKnight Land-Grant Professorship Award. This two-year award recognizes promising assistant professors and is intended to advance the careers of individuals who have the potential to make significant contributions to their departments and their scholarly fields. 

Professor Emeritus CHARLES FAIRHURST , his son CHARLES EDWARD FAIRHURST , and his daughter MARGARET FAIRHURST DURENBERGER were on campus recently to present Department Head Paige Novak with a check for $25,000 for the Charles Fairhurst Fellowship in Earth Resources Engineering in support of graduate students studying geomechanics.
