"You're not going to be handing out 40 resumes in a day. You do really want to tailor, and you want to read those job descriptions and understand what is they're going to be asking of you."

2. Keep it simple and clean

"A lot of people assume you need fancy pictures or graphs, [or] lime-green paper:  Not needed. Clear and simple. Make it easy for the employer to read ... [It's] about the content." 

3. Re-think your email address

"Things like [email protected] ... that's for your friends and for your family. You're going to want to create something with your first and last name, or if you can use your school email address ... perhaps you can use that instead." 

4. Dump the big words 

"The language should be professional, however, if you do not sound like Shakespeare in real life, you [shouldn't try to] on your resume. It does need to be believable."

5. Dump the clichés, give concrete examples

"It's one thing to say you have 'great time management skills,' but what does that actually mean, and what is that going to mean to the position? ... You could talk about being punctual [instead]."

6. First resume? School was your first 'job' 

"Think of the committees or the things you have been involved in  ... or volunteer work ... and of course, things like sports teams. Anything that you've been involved in that could showcase some skills and abilities." 

7. No pictures, thanks

"Unless you're in the modelling industry — not needed."

8. Clean up your Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram 

"Make sure that your social media platforms are set to private. [Be] conscious of what you're posting and what people are posting of you ... maybe Google yourself and see what comes up. And if you are in post-secondary, I would strongly recommend a LinkedIn account."  

9. Start job hunting for summer right now

"Start early. You should be looking for [summer] work in the winter time ... start talking with neighbours, networking — there's still a lot [of hiring done] by word of mouth ."

City Colleges and Apple Team Up to Help Students Build Competitive Tech Resumes

As she continues her studies at Kennedy-King College, cybersecurity student Favour Gbadamosi has already built an impressive resume.

Kennedy-King helped Favour secure an internship at SDI Presence, where she’s worked for over a year updating software for the company’s laptops and computers. Her most recent venture is learning app development through the Everyone Can Code program.

Everyone Can Code is a partnership City Colleges has with Apple that provides students with a paid tech internship and experiential learning opportunities. Students at both Truman and Kennedy-King Colleges are participating in the program this summer.

Favour and her classmates are learning IOS development and how to think critically, which helps them in school, apprenticeships, jobs, and life. This summer, participants looked for a problem in their community and created an app that helps solve the problem. Favour’s group created an app that teaches kindergarteners to read, write, and pronounce letters.

“Everyone Can Code is a great program to be a part of,” Favour said. “It’s great to have Apple on your resume. It pays, it gives you experience working with IOS, and it teaches skills I can use outside of Kennedy-King and in my future career.”

Everyone Can Code is part of the Tech Launchpad at Kennedy-King College. Kennedy-King College’s Tech Launchpad provides students access to high-quality academic and training in tech. This ensures students are ready to navigate the tech ecosystem and succeed at a tech career at a variety of companies.

Secret Service approves bulletproof glass to shield Trump at outdoor rallies

WASHINGTON — The Secret Service will use ballistic glass to protect former President Donald Trump so he can resume outdoor campaign events, according to two sources familiar with the planning and a Trump campaign official.

Bulletproof glass of that kind is already available to sitting presidents and vice presidents. It is transported using military aircraft whenever the president travels, but Trump, a candidate and former president, does not have access to such military transportation support. Sources who asked not to be named to discuss sensitive security provisions said the ballistic glass will now be positioned around the country and moved in by agents who will be responsible for guarding it.

Not every outdoor event will require ballistic glass, but to better protect Trump, it is likely to be used whenever there are issues at specific sites or there are needs for added security.

It is one of several security measures previously used only for officeholders but that are now being added to Trump's protection after a failed assassination attempt, one of the officials said.

The official said the Secret Service is also increasing staffing and technology to mitigate threats around Trump during outdoor rallies, as well as more increasing threat analysis and prevention for all protective details, including deploying counter-snipers and countersurveillance.

The Secret Service faced intense scrutiny and criticism after a gunman fired multiple times at Trump during an outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, wounding him and two rallygoers and killing another person.

Former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle said after the shooting, which led to her resignation, that she was bolstering the protective details of the candidates for president.

Trump has not held an outdoor campaign event since the attempted assassination.

The next 'Phoenix is running out of water' stories will be worse. Let's stop them

A fight is brewing over the groundwater that some parts of metro phoenix use to grow. how it ends for arizona depends largely on what happens next..

GOP lawmakers have grown impatient with Gov. Katie Hobbs’ 2023 “pause” on new subdivisions in areas of metro Phoenix that rely on groundwater.

And they’re not at all happy with the governor’s vetoes on efforts to get that growth moving again.

It’s a good bet that if the House and Senate remain in Republican control next year, they’ll be back with even more legislation to ditch the governor’s pause.

And if past is prologue, they’ll look for ways to get it into law, without the governor’s approval.

Metro Phoenix needs to grow and save water

But this fight doesn’t just have political implications.

Metro Phoenix needs homes. And while single-family home construction has increased markedly since the beginning of the year, some of the most affordable areas remain off-limits because of the pause.

That’s a problem because growth in those areas isn’t stopping.

Build-to-rent homes and industrial projects — which, unlike subdivisions, are not required to prove they have enough water for the long haul before building in certain areas — are simply taking their place .

Without those protections, it’s just a matter of time before trouble arises with these uses and another round of “ Phoenix is running out of water ” stories hit the national press, kicking investors’ fears into overdrive.

And when that happens, oh, buddy. It won’t be pleasant for any of us.

This designation could help cities do both

Governor Hobbs knows this.

But she also knows (or should, anyway) that her pause creates uncertainty, and that can’t go on forever, politically or economically.

Somehow, she’s going to have to find a way to turn it off, without creating a panic that we’ve thrown sustainability to the wind.

Which may explain why she’s pressing a separate, non-legislative process to help a handful of communities earn an assured water supply designation , which essentially signifies that they have enough supplies to cover existing and future water use for the long haul.

Most cities in metro Phoenix already have such a designation. But it’s proven difficult for the remaining ones — mostly in the West Valley and in Pinal County, which grew predominantly on groundwater — because the rules stipulate that they must have all the water they need in hand, before they apply.

And it can’t just be any water. It must be a renewable supply, like leased river water or treated effluent .

This water can be costly to acquire and deliver, and that takes time to program into water rates, so customers that largely must foot the bill for this infrastructure aren’t paying for it all at once.

The idea: To buy water providers time

The proposed workaround is to create an alternative path to earning a designation of assured water supply, or ADAWS for short.

Water providers would get an initial allotment of groundwater to use, but it would decrease over time — essentially buying time for providers to wean themselves off this pumping, instead of having to do it all at once.

“Paused” growth could then resume, but the designation would level the playing field in these areas, forcing every new use — be it a subdivision, a build-to-rent development or an industrial lot — to prove it has enough water for the long haul before it can build.

Arizona will never solve: Its water issues until it changes this

It also would require water providers to replenish pumping from users in their service territories that haven’t historically had to do so.

An analysis from the state water department suggests that if fast-growing communities like Buckeye and Queen Creek were to earn this alternative designation, it would result in less long-term groundwater use than if we held fast to the current rules.

Which is exactly what we want. Or should be, anyway.

Is Arizona ready to compromise? 

The good news is almost everyone agrees on the concept.

They recognize that the program needs enough teeth to ensure groundwater savings are real and sustainable, but that it also needs enough flexibility to help providers make it work financially.

But disagreement remains on the details to make this work.

Some argue, for example, that a decreasing allotment by itself will force providers to find other sources, while others say there should be more guardrails to ensure providers wean themselves off groundwater over time.

Others argue that replenishment stipulations are too drastic, while still others say they’re not firm enough.

Balancing these views won’t be easy.

And if a wide range of water providers aren’t willing to sign off on provisions they might not love but can live with, this rulemaking process is sure to collapse.

Let’s hope they’re in the mood to compromise.

An alternative designation won’t solve every water issue. But it could put fast-growing areas on a more sustainable track, without killing growth or draining the aquifer.

The delivery service that moves library materials across Maine will resume Sept. 3, months after it was suspended because of a contract dispute.

Libraries were notified in June that the popular interlibrary loan service would be suspended while the state heard an appeal from Freedom Xpress Inc., a Brewer-based company that handled the deliveries for 12 years but was not awarded a new contract. Ultimately, an appeals board upheld the Maine State Library’s decision to give the contract to STAT Courier, a national library courier company based in Missouri.

Maine State Librarian Lori Fisher said in a statement Monday that the van delivery service “has been deeply missed” by academic, public and school libraries that rely on interlibrary loans.

“I am grateful to the public, school and academic libraries who bore the brunt of this pause in service due to the complex legal appeal process we were required to navigate after the Request For Proposal award was announced,” Fisher said. “We heard from many Maine residents who were impacted by the disruption in service, which underscores the need for information and resource sharing statewide.”

More than 180 libraries participate in the service, with more 1 million items transported each year, Fisher said.

Maine interlibrary loan system on hold for weeks because of contract dispute

The state’s bid process did not require the contract be awarded to the lowest bidder. According to the state library, STAT Courier was chosen because it provides a dedicated service – its trucks, drivers and sorters deal with library materials only – with no additional stops for other types of deliveries. The company has three sorting hubs in Maine with a process to shuttle materials between them to help with efficiency. Advertisement

After Freedom Xpress filed an appeal, the Department of Administrative and Financial Services told the state library that it could not yet sign a new contract, but was able to start final negotiations to limit the amount of time the service was suspended.

Fisher said STAT Courier will officially begin van delivery service on Aug. 26. During a one-week transition period, the company will get stranded materials back to their home libraries and test new delivery routes.

Maine interlibrary loans to resume after board approves book delivery service

After the service disruption was announced in June, library directors and patrons lamented the pause. The loss was particularly acute in rural towns, where small libraries have limited resources. Some libraries got creative to fill the gap while the appeals process was underway.

The South Portland Public Library teamed up with eight others in the area to offer a smaller version of interlibrary loans they dubbed “Mini-ME.” Kevin Davis, director of the library in South Portland, said patrons are looking forward to again having access to materials from libraries statewide.

“Working with our local library colleagues, we have done our best to minimize the impact created by the disruption in delivery service this summer,” he said in a statement. “However, nothing can match the selection and diversity of materials available when delivery service is fully up and running.”
