They also keep labs stocked, oversee production activities, and review research results. This is one of the best jobs in science in terms of earning potential; you'll need several years of research experience to get into it.

2. Physicist: $130K

A physicist is one of the most common jobs that come to mind when people think of scientists. Physicists aim to understand the workings of the natural world. They research and develop theories about the fundamental principles governing the interactions between energy and matter. There are many specialties available in this field.

3. Pharmacist: $129K

Dispensing medications and teaching people about their prescriptions' potential side effects is one of the best-paying jobs that use science. Most pharmacists work in community pharmacies, but some work in hospitals and clinics, advising health care personnel about drug dosages and interactions. Monitoring the radiation levels in and around nuclear power plants is one of the highest-paying science jobs you can get with a two-year degree. Nuclear technicians adjust and repair reactors to keep them operating safely and instruct workers about safety protocols and decontamination procedures. Be prepared to undergo extensive on-the-job training.

2. Nuclear medicine technologist: $80K

Administering radioactive drugs in order to find abnormalities in lungs, brains, livers, kidneys, and other areas can also lead to a satisfying paycheck. Nuclear medicine technologists conduct specialized procedures like computed tomography (CT) scans and positron emission tomography (PET) scans to help doctors diagnose and treat different diseases. An associate degree can get you started in this field. You can also earn a degree in radiologic technology, followed by a certificate in nuclear medicine technology.

3. Diagnostic medical sonographer: $76K

Sometimes known as ultrasound technicians, these health care professionals use high-frequency sound waves to create images of the inside of patients' bodies. They may focus on anything from muscles and joints to bodily tissues and internal organs. Most employers look for sonographers with associate degrees and professional certification.

4. Registered nurse: $75K

Working closely with doctors, registered nurses use their scientific expertise to evaluate patients' health and explain how to manage different illnesses or conditions. With an associate degree in nursing, you can qualify for entry-level positions. All states require registered nurses to be licensed.

5. Geological technician: $51K

This is one of the best-paying entry-level science jobs. They also identify and map the geological features of different areas. Most technicians specialize in either lab work or fieldwork.

The Anderson Lab within the UW-Madison Center for Genomic Science Innovation (CGSI) and the Department of Medical Genetics seeks an ambitious and highly motivated research specialist to support research activities. The lab is housed within the CGSI, which serves as a vibrant and collegial environment for inclusive and collaborative science. This position will continue in building out a study of SAIL: Studies of Autoimmunity In the Lakota. The Pleiner lab at Stanford Medicine, Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology, is seeking a Research Assistant (Life Sciences Research Professional 1) to assist a fundamental research program in cellular and molecular biology. Join our growing team! 

Our lab aims to understand how human cells produce and quality control biomedically important membrane proteins like transporters, receptors and ion channels that are essential many cellular functions. Misfolding and premature degradation of these membrane proteins is leads to severe diseases like cystic fibrosis or various channelopathies. In addition, many viruses exploit the cell’s biogenesis and quality control machinery to for their own replication. We aim to characterize the molecular machines and pathways that mature human membrane proteins to better understand how to treat these disease and fend off deadly viral infections. 

Towards that goal, the lab also develops novel technology to study and modulate protein quality control pathways for therapeutic benefit. The lab combines cell biology, (structural) biochemistry and protein engineering approaches to tackle challenging human health problems like protein misfolding diseases that cause neurodegeneration. One particular type of tool we exploit for these purposes are small, single-domain antibodies (called nanobodies) from alpacas. These tiny antibodies can be produced in human cells to manipulate intracellular biology e.g. to inhibit or activate protein folding and degradation processes. We use alpaca immunization, synthetic nanobody libraries and computational binder prediction tools to generate function-modulating nanobodies targeting key protein folding and degradation factors of biomedical importance. 

In this role you will work alongside senior lab members to assist, as well as independently execute and troubleshoot experiments. You will have the opportunity to train new lab members, help in organizing the lab space and contribute directly to our ongoing research projects and publications.

Duties include:  •    Plan approach to experiments in support of research projects in lab and/or field based on knowledge of scientific theory.  •    Independently conduct experiments; maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.  •    Apply the theories and methods of a life science discipline to interpret and perform analyses of experiment results; offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with senior researcher. •    Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and apply learnings to related research.  •    Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.  •    Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed. •    Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures or techniques.

Quantum Computing Theory Research Team , RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing (Laboratory head: Keisuke Fujii)

Research Field

RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing (RQC) aims to study quantum information theory, develop techniques for quantum control and measurement, build quantum computing hardware and software, and explore novel quantum technologies. We promote the progress of quantum information science and contribute to through the application of quantum technologies.

Our team focuses on quantum software engineering science, which is necessary for the realization of quantum computers. In the near future, we will develop basic technologies to exploit the performance of quantum computers on a scale that is now being realized or will be realized in the next few years, as well as applications of them to fundamental physics, quantum chemistry, and quantum machine learning. In the long term, we will work on quantum computer architectures, quantum error correction, and optimization of quantum circuits to realize large scale fault-tolerant quantum computers. We are interested in interdisciplinary fields between quantum information science and fundamental physics, quantum chemistry, machine learning, and high-performance computing.

Research Scientist or Postdoctoral Researcher: one position available

In general, Postdoctoral Researcher is defined as those with a doctoral degree of 5 years or less. Research Scientist is defined as those with a doctoral degree more than 5 years.

Job description

Theoretical and numerical research on quantum algorithms (including applications for quantum many body system, quantum chemistry, quantum machine learning), quantum error correction and fault-tolerant quantum computing, and quantum computer architecture.

The job description may be changed during the contract period or upon contract renewal to the extent described above.

Qualification

The candidate should possess a doctoral degree in the field of quantum information science and related fields, or be expected to obtain such a doctoral degree by the date of hire. (e.g., computer science, fundamental physics, machine learning, and quantum chemistry). Applications from a wide range of research fields are welcome, but the candidate should be able to pursue research in the field of quantum computing based on your expertise.

Salary and benefits

• 1. A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, Research Scientist may be reappointed for a period of up to seven years from the date of hire, and Postdoctoral Researcher maybe reappointed for a period of up to five years from the date of hire.
• 2. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee’s abilities, workload at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee’s center, laboratory or project and RIKEN’s management situation and budget at the time. In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 70 years.
• 3. When the Employee's research is scheduled to be reviewed in employee's 4 year at RIKEN, and when it is concluded that there is reason* to believe it will be difficult for the research (or technology development) to be continued, the employment contract will not be renewed for 6 year. (*The reason may relate to the Employee's abilities, performance and/or work attitude.)

In principle, the first two months of employment is considered a trial period. Salary will be an annual salary based on experience, ability, and performance, and will consist of a base salary and a variable salary. The variable salary will be determined each fiscal year based on experience, ability, and performance. The monthly base salary is 305,100 JPY for Post-doctoral Researcher, 361,000～456,800 JPY for Researcher Scientist. The monthly base salary and variable salary are subject to change due to amendments to RIKEN regulations. Discretionary work, commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will be applied. The approximate amount of annual salary at the time of employment: The monthly salary including discretionary work allowance at the time of employment will be more than 378,000 JPY for Post-doctoral Researcher, 470,000JPY for Researcher Scientist. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai). This position falls under the specialized duties discretionary work system; one working day will be calculated as 7 hours and 30 minutes. Days off include public holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day. Paid leave includes annual paid leave (up to 20 days depending on the month of employment), special paid leave (childcare, family nursing care, etc.), and work life balance holidays (up to 7 days depending on the month of employment). The Program Manager will oversee the Research Center or Program which serves as the research administrative base for several multicenter clinical trial/research groups with national/international participation. The Program Manager provides leadership, management and direction, and is responsible for the operation of multiple large and complex units/programs within the designated Research Center or Program. Manages unit staffing and performance management; coordinates resources and work load to achieve objectives and strategies. Works with Scientific and Administrative leadership in development of strategic plans, budgets (work unit and programmatic) and process improvements. Manages partnerships with affiliated national/international consortium or program members. Provides consultative expertise regarding policy and/or regulatory questions to investigators and support staff. Independently leads problem-solving and decision-making activities, within the program scope and change management process assessing risks and actions to accomplishprogram objectives. Interacts with sponsors, including pharmaceutical companies, federal (e.g. National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense) and others. Continually evaluates work unit processes and procedures for effectiveness and efficiency and implements quality improvement efforts. Participates in grant renewal processes. Facilitates department meetings, maintains active role on administrative and executive committees, task forces and acts as a "change agent" for the unit(s). Acts as a mentor for the supervisors and staff within the unit(s). Initiates and maintains positive working relationships with internal (e.g. IRB, Compliance Office, other CRO Units, MCA, MCF, etc.) and external customers (e.g. FDA, NCI, OHRP, etc.). Directs and controls the activities of large/mega/major/complex/business critical research programs having overall responsibility for planning, budgeting, implementing and maintaining costs, methods and employees. Accountable for the achievement of program goals, objectives, budget and timelines. Determines and establishes organizational structures and supervisory relationships, subject to leadership approval. Manages multiple and/or high complex programs and deals with many investigators both within and outside of Mayo and also internationally. Develops program strategy, program planning, implementation plan and program metrics. Ensures high quality and minimum program costs by implementing and maintaining a quality management program across all programs responsible for. Decisions would affect the financial, employee, or public relations posture of Mayo or the research center.

Bachelor’s degree in management, business administration, health care administration, or related field with a minimum of 6 years of related experience; OR Master’s degree in management, business administration, health care administration, or related field with a minimum of 2 years management or related experience required. Working knowledge of clinical trials, research programs, data management, computer/related systems are required. Must have demonstrated competencies in strategic and systems thinking, business acumen, decision making, leading people, change management, global thinking, influence without authority, communication, conflict resolution, process and systems change and operations. Demonstrated project management and knowledge of continuous improvement methods. Must have the ability to independently manage a varied workload of projects and assignments with multiple priorities in a rapidly changing environment. Will need to take initiative to develop and implement innovative solutions to issues with significant financial and operational impact to the work unit. Working knowledge and understanding of finance, budgeting, planning and human resource development is essential. Must have strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated effectiveness in management and group dynamics, including team problem solving skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills are required.  SoCRA or ACRP certification preferred.

Research explores ways to mitigate the environmental toxicity of ubiquitous silver nanoparticles

Silver nanoparticles exhibit the greatest toxicity on Daphnia magna , small crustaceans that are considered keystone grazers with an outsize impact on their environments.

Silver has long been used to thwart the spread of illness and in recent years silver nanoparticles have been incorporated into products ranging from sanitizers, odor-resistant clothes and washing machines to makeup, food packaging and sports equipment.

Nanoparticles are tiny pieces of material ranging in size from one- to 100-billionths of a meter. In addition to their antimicrobial properties, silver nanoparticles are industrially important as catalysts and in electronics applications.

Despite their ubiquity, little is known about their environmental toxicity or how it might be mitigated.

A collaborative team co-led by a College of Science researcher have taken a key step toward closing the knowledge gap with a study that indicates the particles’ shape and surface chemistry play key roles in how they affect aquatic ecosystems.

The findings, published in Nanomaterials , are important because they suggest silver nanoparticles can be produced in formats that preserve their beneficial properties while limiting environmentally negative ones.

Scientists led by chemist Marilyn Rampersad Mackiewicz and biological engineer Stacey L. Harper assessed how spherical and triangular-shaped silver nanoparticles with five different surface chemistries affected their uptake and toxicity in a laboratory microcosm of bacteria, algae, Daphnia and embryonic zebrafish.

Daphnia are tiny crustaceans, and zebrafish are a small freshwater species that go from a cell to a swimming fish in about five days.

Zebrafish are particularly useful for studying the development and genetics of vertebrates, including the effects of environmental contaminants and pharmaceuticals on early embryonic development. They share a remarkable similarity to humans at the molecular, genetic and cellular levels; embryonic zebrafish are of special interest because in addition to developing quickly, they are transparent and can be easily maintained in small amounts of water.

The authors note that hundreds of tons of silver nanoparticles are produced every year for commercial uses, meaning it’s inevitable some will end up in aquatic environments.

“Silver nanoparticles are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and not much is known about their toxicity except for the free silver ions that can result from surface oxidation of the nanoparticles,” said Mackiewicz, assistant professor of chemistry. “Free silver ions are known to be toxic and in this paper we found a way to study the toxicity of silver nanoparticles and how they impact the environment irrespective of poisonous silver ions.”

Mackiewicz, Harper and collaborators in the OSU colleges of Science, Engineering and Agricultural Sciences found silver nanoparticles negatively affect some species but not others.
