East Pittsburgh Church Making Plans for Centennial

EAST PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Presentation of Christ (Ypapanti) Church of East Pittsburgh is among the many churches that are celebrating their centennial in the early part of the 21st century.

A distinguishing characteristic of “Ypapanti” is that it is the only parish in the Archdiocese that bears the name of Ypapanti and celebrates its Feast Day on Feb. 2. As each Orthodox Christian mother enters the church with her new born infant 40 days after giving birth, to receive the blessing of the Lord and return to the communion of the Church, she commemorates this holy day. There is another unique feature of the small parish of Ypapanti that was built in 1915 in the town where the original George Westinghouse plant was established. Among the parishes in the greater Pittsburgh region, it is the only one that was built as a Greek Orthodox Church on the same site on Electric Avenue, where it has continued to serve its community for all of the 100 years. It has been a beacon of Christian light and life to the area. Wanting to share the joy of the Centennial, the community has planned a three day weekend on Oct. 23–25 to which everyone is invited. On Friday night, former members and guests from near and far will enjoy the fun and friends at a Welcome Night in the Olympia Hall. On Saturday, Metropolitan Savas of Pittsburgh will celebrate Great Vespers with Pittsburgh area and former Ypapanti clergy. Vespers will be followed by a Centennial dinner–dance where the Ypapanti Grecian Odyssey Dancers will perform.

The current Ypapanti congregation is looking forward to welcoming former parishioners and guests to celebrate this “once in a lifetime” milestone, either by attending the weekend event, or by contributing to the Commemorative Album that will be distributed in October. For more information contact the Presentation of Christ in East Pittsburgh (412.824.9188) or [email protected]

Ms. Doreza is the Ypapanti Church Centennial chairman.

Greek Orthodox regional center will serve as community, administrative space when finished

Julia Maruca

Local Greek Orthodox churches will soon have a new home for their regional administrative staff that will double as a center of community.

The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh, a regional district that encompasses Greek Orthodox churches in most of Western and Central Pennsylvania and parts of Ohio and West Virginia, will hold a groundbreaking ceremony at 11 a.m. July 18 to kick off the construction of a new Metropolis Center.

The event will be held at the parking lot at 525 Fairway St. in Washington, Pa., adjacent to the new Metropolis Center site.

According to a release, the center is scheduled to open in 2024. It will encompass 15,000 square feet and include a church, library/conference room, dedicated offices for the Metropolis staff, a multipurpose hall, a fully equipped caterer’s kitchen and an outdoor terrace.

The Metropolis raised upward of $10 million over the past several years for the construction of the building, including a donation of $6 million over five years from the Giorgi Family Foundation in Reading.

Project manager Nick Lekas said the new building will be “transformational” for the Metropolis by providing a location to build community.

“Our faith is based on community, and we believe that we’re saved in community, when we’re all shoulder-to-shoulder worshipping and praying and working and supporting one another in the highs and lows of life,” he said.

“The whole idea that we’re going to have a dining space that will open up to the chapel for feast days is huge, compared to where we are today.”

The new building will make gathering the church district’s leadership easier, said the Rev. Joseph Cervo, priest at Presentation of Christ Church in East Pittsburgh. Currently, Metropoliswide meetings and events are either held at a smaller building in Pittsburgh’s Shadyside neighborhood or scheduled at different churches within the Metropolis.

“There’s not any parking at the old Metropolis center. Any time they have something, even when we have meetings of the priests of the Metropolis, it’s an issue for us to go down there and park,” Cervo said.

“(The new center) will provide the opportunity for the clergy and for people from the parishes to convene there, which is impossible where they’re at now. There are some liturgical celebrations over the course of the year that are generally done in various parishes, because there’s not the facility to have it at the Metropolis.”

Cervo looks forward to attending the groundbreaking ceremony later this month. The planning process for the building dates to 2017 but was delayed by the pandemic, he said.

“There’s a great need there. This is not something that is being done for frivolous cause, this is really a necessity,” he said. “The new center is not going to have a great impact on me personally, but I’m very happy that it is being done, because I realize that it really is a necessity, and it’s going to advance the ministry of the church throughout the Metropolis.”

The new center will also be more conveniently situated for churches on the outer edges of the region, as it sits close to the intersection of Interstates 70 and 79, Lekas said.

“For us who come from parishes as far west as Columbus, Ohio, and as far east as Camp Hill and Harrisburg, that is going to cut the amount of time way down to get to that area,” he said. “It will be a gathering place, that’s what we do.”

Lekas expects the metropolis will work on fundraising further in the upcoming years for decor for the building and an operational endowment fund. Overall, he’s optimistic about the impact of the center.

“We’re so, so lucky to be where we are at this moment, and it will be a great blessing to the communities,” he said.

This story was updated to reflect that the groundbreaking day is July 18.

Presentation of Christ Greek Orthodox Church - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Grecian Odyssey Dancers

  • Junior Olympian Dancers

The Grecian Odyssey Dancers of Ypapanti first represented the Presentation of Christ Greek Orthodox Church of East Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in may of 1981, at the 25th Annual Pittsburgh Folk Festival. The Ypapanti dancers invited interested young Greek-Americans from the neighboring Greek Orthodox parishes to join with them to represent the Greeks of the Pittsburgh area at the International Folk Festival. After that first performance, the twenty-six dancers decided to form a permanent group, that has danced before more than 800 audiences since then.

The Grecian Odyssey Dancers perform most frequently in the tri-state (PA, OH, WV) area, at Greek festivals, international shows, academic institutions, religious and civic celebrations, and private parties. They have also performed in Michigan, Florida, and on three performance tours of Greece. Their repertoire includes approximately thirty Greek folk dances from the islands, as well as the mainland of Greece. All of their shows are presented in native costumes, of which they have five sets, representing various regions of Greece.

The group practices at the Presentation of Christ Greek Orthodox Church in East Pittsburgh, and welcomes dancers from all around the city of Pittsburgh to join with them in representing the Church and their Greek traditions. The current roster includes forty young men and women, between the ages of 15 and 55, comprised of students and professionals who are dedicated to sharing their Greek heritage with others. Mary Doreza has served as the Director since 1981, and appreciates the help of the current Assistant Directors, Michelle Kotsagrelos and Jamie Orfanopoulos. The Assistant Directors also instruct the Junior Olympian Dancers of Ypapanti, who range between the ages of 7 and 15. The efforts of everyone are entirely voluntary.
