Northern State announces teach-out partnership with Presentation College

ABERDEEN, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - When Presentation College announced that it will be permanently closing its campus in 2023 , Northern State University was eager to work with Presentation to form a teach-out agreement for students who want to continue their education in Aberdeen. The partnership was announced by Northern State on Tuesday.

The teach-out agreement will allow students in every major at Presentation, except nursing and radiologic technology, to finish their degrees online or in-person through Northern State and graduate on-time.

“We’re worried about the students from Presentation College and the stress they’re going through with their university closing, and we want to make sure they know they have a home in Aberdeen to finish their degree, finish it on time and at a price that works for them and that is comparable to what they’re paying at Presentation College, if not lower,” said NSU Associate Provost Erin Fouberg.

As the two universities located in Aberdeen, Presentation College and Northern State University have worked together for years. NSU President Neal Schnoor says Northern State wanted to make the transition for Presentation students as smooth as possible.

“Northern has worked with Presentation for quite awhile. These agreements are very detailed. You want to make sure you get it right so when you announce it, the students and everyone know that this is a solid plan to help us help them reach their goals,” said Dr. Schnoor.

Dr. Fouberg says NSU already has a system in place for transferring credits for Presentation students and resources available to them. Community members have already offered one-time scholarships for students who choose to utilize the teach-out agreement as well.

“Our registrar is already helping some Presentation College students matriculate to Northern and tell them exactly how their courses will fit,” said Dr. Fouberg.

Northern will not only accept credits from current Presentation College students, but also any student who stopped out of their degree since 2013.

“We want to help those learners come back to college and finish their degree from Northern and be proud alumni of Northern State University,” said Dr. Fouberg.

NSU is also interested in keeping Presentation staff in Aberdeen as well.

”We also have a lot of talent on-staff at Presentation. So, for Aberdeen, it’s very critical that we retain talent in the region. Our job as a regional comprehensive is to fulfill workforce needs, and we’re absolutely committed to that,” said Dr. Schnoor.

Dr. Schnoor says meeting Presentation students’ needs and encouraging them to continue their education in Aberdeen is Northern State’s priority.

“Northern has deep respect for the legacy of the Presentation Sisters and Presentation College. This is an especially challenging time for Presentation students. With this agreement, Northern can directly assist them to complete their degrees. Aberdeen is a close-knit community, and we’ll pull together to help Presentation students and continue to meet regional educational and workforce needs.”

Northern State staff will be present at the teach-out fair in Lantern Hall on Presentation College’s campus from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30, and Tuesday, Jan. 31.

Fourth and fifth teach-out agreements announced for Presentation students

Dakota Wesleyan University has announced a teach-out agreement with Presentation College, according to a news release from Dakota Wesleyan. Later in the day, Presentation announced they had reached an agreement with Dickinson State University on a teach-out.

Dakota Wesleyan marked the fourth teach-out agreement announced for Presentation students in the wake of Presentation College's announcement that it plans to close once summer classes have concluded. It is also the first agreement announced by a South Dakota campus.

Dakota Wesleyan is in Mitchell and Dickinson State is in Dickinson, N.D. Other announced teach-out agreements are at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa; University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D.; and Olivet College in Olivet, Michigan. 

Campuses Teach-out agreements are required when a campus announced plans to close.

Teach-out agreements provide an option for Presentation College students when considering where they will finish their education. Although students are not required to chose one of those four campuses, the teach-out agreements provide some assurances for students, like guaranteed admission; tuition comparable to out-of-pocket expenses at Presentation; transfer of all credits from Presentation and graduation on the same timeline.

“Although the closure of Presentation College is a difficult circumstance, as it would be for any institution, its faculty, staff and students, we at Dakota Wesleyan are positioned to assist students in any way we can," Dakota Wesleyan President Dan Kittle said in a news release. "We are grateful to be selected for the teach-out and we will work with the students, their families and the supportive staff at Presentation to ensure that students’ transitions are as seamless and easy as possible.”

DWU will begin working with Presentation students immediately and will be present at a planned Teach-Out Fair on Jan. 30-31 on the Presentation campus.

72 years after the Presentation Sisters founded Presentation College to train nurses for rural health care, Presentation College in Aberdeen will close after this summer’s academic term. Here’s the College’s announcement:

Presentation College announced today that it will not enroll students for the 2023-24 academic year and will cease educational operations at its Aberdeen campus after the Spring and Summer 2023 sessions. Three Teach-Out Agreements with other higher educational institutions are in place to provide complete credit acceptance and comparable net tuition costs for current students. Employees will be provided staggered end dates and final compensation based upon their responsibilities. St. Ambrose University (Davenport, Iowa) will continue to offer Presentation’s signature Online BSN program, a pathway for nursing students established through a consortial arrangement that was communicated last week. The Online BSN programs will become the Nano Nagle Online School of Nursing at St. Ambrose University in honor of Nano Nagle who founded the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Aberdeen, South Dakota (Presentation Sisters) in Ireland in 1775. “After careful evaluation of the sustainability of the College’s academic programs, and a thorough review of alternatives, the Board of Trustees and Presentation Sisters reluctantly decided to close the physical campus and implement Teach-Out programs as the most responsible way to steward students’ pathways to completing their degrees,” Sister Mary Thomas, president of the Presentation Sisters Corporate Board shared. “We understand and share the heartbreak by our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and Aberdeen community, and we will work closely with them to succeed through this transition.” Presentation Sisters founded the College in 1951 to fulfill its mission of rural health care and service through nursing education. The College later expanded to include academic programs in Health and Natural Sciences, and Social Science and Humanities, to support its mission of development of the whole person, in the Catholic tradition. Presentation Sisters have continuously sponsored the College and retained ownership of the campus land with the College as a separate nonprofit. Just before the COVID pandemic, the College, the Board of Trustees, and the Corporate Board of the Presentation Sisters embarked on a year-long process of examining data and market impacts, engaging constituent groups to better understand the financial health of the College and its potential for growing enrollment to achieve sustainability. Its rural location, difficult for many out-of-state students to access, was already a known factor, along with a significant dependency on tuition revenue and gifts. The impact of COVID exacerbated the College’s challenges. “The College explored and brought to the boards numerous partnership options over the last year, resulting in their selection of St. Ambrose University (SAU) for continuing the Online BSN programs,” said Paula Langteau, president of Presentation College. “As previously announced, St. Ambrose University’s state-of-the-art nursing program is a natural fit with Presentation to create the Nano Nagle Online School of Nursing, ensuring the legacies of the College and the Presentation Sisters,” President Paula Langteau said. “SAU also will serve as one of a number of Teach-Out Partners for other majors. It is important to us that every student has multiple, comparable options to complete their chosen degrees on time and without an increased financial investment.” Presentation also has Teach-Out Agreements in place with the University of Mary (Bismarck, North Dakota) and Olivet College (Olivet, Michigan) and continues to pursue adding agreements with other regional and online institutions. January 30-31, the College is hosting a Teach-Out Fair (in the afternoons) and a Career Fair (in the mornings) to assist students and faculty, respectively, with their transitions to other higher educational institutions. In a unique partnership for college transitions, the College is also bringing independent academic coaches from College Possible to campus to assist students with their individual plans. A Job Fair will be organized for later this Spring to help staff to explore future employment opportunities [Presentation College, announcement of closure , 2023.01.17].

Spring semester courses at Presentation started last week on Monday, January 9 . The college will maintain its full schedule of spring courses; it will offer only practical nursing certificate courses this summer. The college says it will fully refund students who choose to withdraw this semester .

St. Ambrose University will become the keeper of Presentation College’s transcripts and other records. The college says it is not filing for bankruptcy and should be able to carry out its existing contracts through August 31.

Presentation College’s closure is part of a long nationwide trend of campus closures. United States college and university closures spiked in 2016; over 860 higher-education campuses have closed since 2004 , largely due to a shrinking student pool . According to IPEDS , Presentation College’s full-time-equivalent enrollment in Academic year 2021 was 527; in 2017, PC FTEs reached a decade-peak at 752.

The Presentation Sisters left their convent in 2021 and moved to two assisted-living facilities in Aberdeen and Sioux Falls. The closure of Presentation College will leave the 100-acre campus on the northwest corner of town vacant and open to new development proposals. Expect a lot of money-people and idea people to be contacting the Sisters and the College trustees to float their ideas for converting the Presentation campus into Aberdeen’s Next Big Thing.

Another nail in the coffin of healthcare for the citizens of SD. It will not be long before healthcare will only be available to those who can travel great distances to see even a mid-level provider.

For decades to pay lawsuits and hush money to the victims of pederastic clergy the Roman Church has been bleeding the assets and financial resources of the Presentation, Benedictine and the other ten orders of nuns in the United States forcing many elderly women into nursing homes at taxpayer expense. That’s it’s criminal is to say the very least.

Another measure of the dire labor shortage in the US is the closing of over 860 higher education schools since 2004. The US is short 400,000 workers (SD is short over 30,000 workers). The annual labor shortage will climb to about or over 900,000 annually in 15 years until peaking. Wage inflation is built into the system.

Noem’s and republican answers are to: 1) close the borders stopping immigration and exacerbating wage inflation, and 2) forcing seniors to work by cutting social security and medicare. The US will NOT receive immigrants from western or even eastern Europe because those nations have far better social safety nets and also have populations in decline. US immigrants MUST come largely from Central and South America and Africa – where the birthrate is over the replacement birthrate. I think that the campus, or at least part of the facilities at Presentation College should be converted to the Fred Deutsch Aberdeen Medical Cannabis dispensary. Maybe the Sisters should have kept the money that they used to help buy 20,000 votes to defeat IM27. Karma is a bitch.

Strange situation since nurses are in high demand and low availability. What gives?

Well…I consider it a blow to Aberdeen and to the state generally. The Benedictines and Presentation Sisters have contributed greatly to health care and our quality of life in South Dakota. Historically, in South Dakota, communities depended on the Presentation Sisters and Benedictines to establish hospitals and train medical personnel. It appears that time is now past but the quality of their replacements in the industry is in doubt.

Might this become a regional jail for the County of Brown and its neighbors?

Maybe it should become a boot camp for those whose BMI is over 27.

Maybe a Soylent Green processing center for grudz and his “Connie Commoners with No Sense” group.

A state-owned resort catering to elderly fellows who enjoy all you can eat breakfast buffets! Only that Aberdeen is a hole nobody wants to visit. So the prison idea is probably best.

The point about health care and nurse supply is worth considering. We are short on nurses, as we are of many other important professionals. One would think that the need for nurses would have kept Presentation College’s nursing program viable. But perhaps PC struggled to sustain its nursing program for the same reasons South Dakota struggles to recruit nurses: not enough students wanted to study in a relatively remote area, and not enough faculty wanted to work for the lower wages at PC when they could make much more working elsewhere.

Of course, in this case, you’d think the wage issue would have solved itself: high demand for nurses should have led to high demand for nurse training programs which should have led to lots of tuition-paying students which should have led to good salaries for instructors.

PC was competing with SDSU for nursing students, and that doesn’t seem a fair fight, but again, if SDSU isn’t completely meeting the market demand for nurses, you’d think there’d be room for a competitive nursing program elsewhere in the state.

To pump up Aberdeen in general, start a for profit or social business (M. Yunus, Nobel Prize Winner) and as you grow your business, set up shop in Aberdeen, add 5 or 10 employees there. Yes!

Presentation College is closing the doors at its Aberdeen campus.

The campus will cease operations after the summer semester, according to a press release from the college.

Three teach-out agreements with other higher educational institutions are in place to help students continue their degrees. An online nursing program will continue to be offered through Iowa-based St. Ambrose University.

Employees will be provided staggered end dates and final compensation "based upon their responsibilities," the release said.

“After careful evaluation of the sustainability of the College’s academic programs, and a thorough review of alternatives, the Board of Trustees and Presentation Sisters reluctantly decided to close the physical campus and implement Teach-Out programs as the most responsible way to steward students’ pathways to completing their degrees,” said Sister Mary Thomas, president of the Presentation Sisters Corporate Board. “We understand and share the heartbreak by our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and Aberdeen community, and we will work closely with them to succeed through this transition.”

The board began a year-long evaluation of the college's sustainability just before the COVID-19 pandemic began. Officials said the study identified many challenges to Presentation's growth, including its rural location and dependence on tuition revenue and gifts. The impact of COVID exacerbated these challenges.

The private college was founded in 1951 by the Presentation Sisters, a Catholic religious institution, with a focus on its nursing program. Other academic programs were added later.

Presentation College announced Tuesday it would be ceasing operations on its Aberdeen campus in the north part of town and no longer accepting students for the 2023-24 fall semester.

The announcement was made via a press release. This announcement comes days after an agreement was announced between St. Ambrose University in Davenport Iowa and PC to enhance its online nursing program. St. Ambrose will continue to offer PC’s signature online BNS program and be known as the Nano Nagle Online School of Nursing at St. Ambrose University.

“After careful evaluation of the sustainability of the College’s academic programs, and a thorough review of alternatives, the Board of Trustees and Presentation Sisters reluctantly decided to close the physical campus and implement Teach-Out programs as the most responsible way to steward students’ pathways to completing their degrees,” said Sister Mary Thomas, president of the Presentation Sisters Corporate Board. “We understand and share the heartbreak by our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and Aberdeen community, and we will work closely with them to succeed through this transition.”  

“This extremely difficult decision was made after a careful evaluation of the sustainability of the College’s academic programs and a thorough review of alternatives. Ultimately, based on the College’s recent enrollment trends and financial health, and the bleak higher education enrollment forecast for the coming years, the Board of Trustees and the Presentation Sisters’ Corporate Board concluded that partnering with other colleges and universities to deliver Teach-Out programs is the most responsible way to steward our students’ pathways to completing their degrees.” PC president Dr. Paula Langteau said in a statement.

“For nearly 75-years Presentation College and the Presentation Sisters have been a beacon of pride for the city of Aberdeen, and the state of South Dakota.”

Presentation College was founded in 1951 and is renown for its nursing program.

According to coach’s at the college, athletics will cease operation as well. The men and women’s basketball season will be finished and the baseball and softball teams will move forward with their seasons, but following that there will be no more athletics at PC.

Knowing your worth is a struggle many college athletes face now that they can make money from their name, image, and likeness, known as NIL.

To help athletes understand their value, influencer-marketing-and-production company Gen Agency has been educating and consulting college athletes on NIL.

"Our big focus is creating a sustainable NIL marketplace at each university," Rachel Maeng Brown, the founder and CEO of Gen agency, told Business Insider.

Brown, a former NCAA rower, said the NIL side of Gen Agency educates universities to help them build curriculums. The agency also offers athletes on-site and virtual workshops about NIL marketing.

In April, Gen Agency hosted its first NIL-educational summit for University of Michigan influencers in partnership with Reach , a student-driven organization helping content creators grow their platforms and connect with brands. The presentation, which was shared with BI, covered how athletes can understand their audience, price sponsored content, post properly on social media, and protect themselves with a contract.

The summit also featured a panel of guest speakers, including former NFL player Isaiah Johnson . Johnson told BI that social-media followers and engagement are more important to brands who work with athletes than on-field performance.

"Followers, everyone wants to know how many people are following you and then two, just how genuine you are," he said. "If you are genuinely using a product, this could be a wonderful fit."

Johnson said athletes with the best media presence are natural and real with their followers. He said sports fans love behind-the-scenes footage they can not get from somewhere else, like athletes' day-in-the-life videos.

Brown said knowing your target audience is key to working with brands. It helps companies understand who they can reach by recruiting you. 

During the summit, Brown showed athletes where to find key stats on their Instagram audiences, including follower count and growth, location, age, and gender.

A formula athletes can use to estimate the price of a brand deal

The presentation offered a formula student-athletes can use to calculate how much to charge brands for a sponsored post. It's based on a $10 CPM, which refers to the cost per every 1,000 impressions, though CPMs can vary.

To calculate what to charge per post, take the average number of views over the last 30 days and divide it by 1,000. Then take that figure and multiply it by the CPM.

Using that math, an athlete with 600,000 average views over the last days would charge $6,000 per post, based on a $10 CPM, per the presentation's example.

Know your copyright rules

Athletes, like other influencers, need to comply with brand, platform, and regulatory guidelines for social-media posts and ads, such as copyright rules and what kind of content is permitted on a platform.

Student-athletes also need to abide by NCAA rules because posting inappropriate content can result in losing scholarships, eligibility, and future career opportunities, according to the NCAA .

Brown said college athletes should also exercise caution and not include other brands or anything illegal in a sponsored post. She advised double-checking the spelling before posting, too.

Dos and don'ts for sponsored posts

The agency also emphasized the importance of double-checking disclosures for paid ads, partnerships, and more so athletes do not have to delete or redo sponsored videos.

"This is really important to student-athletes as well as smaller influencers because a lot of brands will try to bully them," said Brown, "to say, 'You don't need to put hashtag. You don't need to disclose that we're sponsored.' But it's actually illegal across social media."

She said failing to disclose a sponsored post could result in an athlete's account being banned or messing up their average views and algorithm.

Things to know about payment

Brown also talked about contracts and W-9s, which are tax forms for independent contractors. The presentation emphasized in capital letters that athletes need a contract to make sure they get paid for their work.

They should also be mindful of terms such as "usage" and "ownership" because it could mean their videos could be posted on any social-media channel or site.

Brown said brands are not going to protect the athletes, so they need to look out for themselves.

NC State AMA Chapter Ranks No. 7 of 350 Collegiate Chapters Nationwide

NC State’s chapter in the last year has built on the club’s solid foundation with innovative ideas, an increasingly professional approach by its executive board, and a focus on internal community spirit in running the organization.

What’s almost as great as being No. 1? For the NC State American Marketing Association (AMA) chapter , it’s No. 7.

The student club achieved the new 2023 ranking at the annual American Marketing Association International Collegiate Conference in New Orleans recently. The seventh-place spot marks a progressive 10-year climb for the club in ratings of the approximately 350 AMA collegiate chapters in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.

At the conference, students in the 130-member NC State club — which placed lower in the top 15 last year — were stunned about the result.

“We didn’t even think the top 10 was possible, but there we were at No. 7. We had so much Wolfpack pride,” says Jada Wyatt, a senior who held the new club position of executive vice president of strategy this past year. Zedrique Ahmed was president. 

“It feels like we’ve taken a step in a much larger direction,” says Wyatt, a Poole business administration student who graduated this month. “I know it’s going to continue. We have momentum.”

That seems to be an understatement.

Each chapter submits an annual report that details the previous year’s goals and accomplishments. The report influences international rankings, which are based in part on membership size, partnerships with community organizations and chapter achievements.   

Among other initiatives, the NC State report highlights the restructuring of its executive board and governance, and its key strategic areas of engagement, collaboration and inclusion.

The club’s in-house marketing agency, CMS, which helps off-campus clients address real business issues, also makes the chapter stand out. The club’s own annual regional conference, held at NC State, is notable, too, and unusual among student AMA organizations.     

Those measures have led to an improved reputation for a club that wasn’t even ranked until about 10 years ago.

“It shows how well they’re working together as a team and meeting their goals. Their overall goal is continuous improvement,” says Patrice Nealon , one of three Poole College faculty co-advisers (with Tom Byrnes and Pieter Verhallen ) for the chapter. “Every year new initiatives are executed, resulting in growth and positive change.”

To spark growth and positive change, NC State’s chapter has met ambitious targets on several fronts as it provides opportunities for members to build leadership, organizing and teamwork skills.

With strong internal communication and an excellent digital presence, “The student organization mimics a well-run business,” Nealon says.

And businesses are noticing.

“It’s gratifying to see the number of employers who come directly to our AMA looking for students” to hire as interns and post-graduate employees, Nealon says.

Local business representatives also speak at NC State’s chapter events, and the club has corporate sponsors. A partnership with AMA Triangle, the regional professional AMA division, provides outstanding networking opportunities for students.   

Wyatt’s experiences with the AMA and throughout her time at Poole have helped her build the business strengths she’ll need for success.

“Finding what it is that I bring to the table in business took so much exploration, but now I feel I can differentiate myself,” she says.

In the short term, Wyatt will work as a communications intern at Lenovo at Research Triangle Park. She also has goals of pursuing Poole’s new Business Sustainability Certificate and NC State’s Miller Fellowship, which supports graduates with a venture startup plan.

Like Wyatt, most of the AMA members are business students, but she and others on the executive board drew more diverse majors from Poole and other NC State colleges.

“I felt a sense of belonging among our members. We built a much more inclusive space,” she says. “We made a real effort to call people out for things they’re doing well … It lights them up. They have a confidence about them that they didn’t before.”
