Anupama

I really value the opportunity for engaged scholarship provided by IIM Bangalore, where our research questions matter not only for business but also government and society. To be able to place myself at that intersection as a scholar, to engage with questions facing organizations and society, and to build capabilities to impart that knowledge to future managers in classrooms is exciting to me. I truly believe that the PhD programme at IIM Bangalore will shape us into scholars who will contribute to organizations and society through research.

270 hours coursework spread over eighteen month is undertaken by the students. Each course has multi component evaluation including continuous assessment and final evaluation. After completion of the entire coursework the student will need to appear and clear a comprehensive examination to be eligible to form the  Thesis Advisory Committee and subsequent proposal defence. The goal is to ensure that students are prepared to undertake research with some help from the guide. This is one of the global best practices adopted by top research universities. The students are assessed on a rubric-based system and are given two opportunities to pass the examination. Failing which the student will have to quit the programme.

At the completion of the two-year coursework, the students, starting in 2019 – 20, will need to write a comprehensive examination before proceeding further. The goal is to ensure that students are prepared to undertake research with some help from the guide. This is one of the global best practices adopted by top research universities. The students are assessed on a rubric-based system and are given two opportunities to pass the examination. Upon passing the of the examination, the students move on to the next stage.

After the comprehensive examination, students move on to guided research. Each student forms a Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) with at least 3 members, but the number of members can go up to 5. The primary guide is from NMIMS, and from SBM. In addition, a secondary TAC member is also from SBM. For the third member, we strongly encourage students to have a member from the outside. The students work with the TAC to come to the first milestone in this phase.

The students need to prepare and defend a thesis proposal usually by the end of the third year of their Ph. D. journey. The proposal covers the theoretical framework relied upon in research and a thorough literature review leading to a research gap, and also the statements of hypothesis or the theoretical framework. The proposal also touches upon data to be relied on, and measurements of different constructs and variables, the proposed sampling strategy and the proposed statistical estimation methods, or any other data analysis methods as per study design. Prior to a proposal being presented, an internal presentation is done to ensure that the proposal is of acceptable quality. The proposal is presented in front of a Research and Recognition Committee (RRC), which consists of Dean (SBM), TAC members and two external subject matter experts (SME). After successfully defending the proposal, the student commences fieldwork and/or other research work towards completion of the thesis.

Prior to submission of the thesis, the students need to once again make a public presentation. Prior to a synopsis being presented, an internal presentation is done to ensure that the thesis is of an acceptable quality. The synopsis is presented in front of a Research and Recognition Committee (RRC), which consists of Dean (SBM), TAC members and two external subject matter experts. After successfully defending synopsis, the student is ready to submit the thesis for final evaluation. In the meantime, the student is also expected to publish at least two papers in reputed peer-reviewed journals (typically ABDC-listed journals, or Scopus-indexed journals).

After submitting the thesis to the examination office, the thesis is sent to two external reviewers for their evaluation. If the reviewers believe that the thesis meets acceptable standards, a final viva-voce is scheduled in the University. The student is awarded the degree after the successful final defence.

The SBM-NMIMS is partnering with international institutions of repute for student guidance, guest lectures and other workshops to provide value additions to students. The program has resulted in scholars publishing in high-quality journals at the start of their academic careers, and also otherwise provide a demonstration of good scholarship.

phd in management mumbai

Dr. Mayank H. Joshipura Professor, Associate Dean Research and Ph.D.

Thank you for your interest in our doctoral program. A doctoral degree represents the highest academic degree achievable, and at SBM NMIMS, we are committed to providing you with a training that will not only help you receive this degree but will enable you to be an expert, scholar, and a skilled researcher.

We offer Ph. D. both in full-time and part-time mode, which is more suited for senior practitioners and professionals. While currently most of our students are doing the program in a part-time mode, we are recently building up our full-time student body as well: in the incoming class of 2020, full-time students outnumber part-time ones.

The program started in 2004-05 and has come a long way since. Recently, we have made a series of changes completely revamping the program. Because management is a discipline that informs and shapes managerial and organizational practices, the rigour of study - demonstrated through reliance on strong theoretical foundations and usage of state-of-the-art data analysis methods - as well as relevance to practitioners are emphasized in developing dissertation projects.

Among the salient features of this program are:

  • Rigorous two-year coursework that trains students in both quantitative and qualitative research methods, and in applying them in their research
  • A focus on theoretical development and critical analysis of academic papers during coursework in the majors of choice
  • A comprehensive examination at the end of two-year coursework that evaluates students’ ability to conduct research independently with supervision by a Thesis Advisory Committee
  • Potential to work with reputed scholars globally who possibly become part of the Thesis Advisory Committee
  • Publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals that enhance the reputation of the scholars as well as that of SBM NMIMS

To encourage young scholars, we provide stipends to full-time students of the program. We hope that you will find the above information helpful while deciding on your doctoral journey and consider applying to the program. Please contact us if you need more information.

Review for vocational courses admission

  • Internship opportnity was the best thing about TISS
  • Degree Felicitation programme at the main TISS branch
  • only 6 months on class study for bachelor's programme
  • No support to find and place for internships

They just have 6 months of class training, rest they will give a letter of job training OJT for Internship , so from 1st year to 3rd year you are supposed to do OJT and accordingly have to take an exam on the basis of your learning from Internships

Honest Whistling Woods

  • College Environment and student exposure
  • The level of tests that were organised .
  • Efforts from the faculty to teach students
  • Beneficial Assignments were not given...

In the first year of BA in filmmaking, students are tought about evry category or field in filmmaking is taught to the students after 1 years of the course. The students are asked to give their prefrence for the field they want to opt in and study for the next 2 years. for this student s need to give exam and interviews for the specific fields. The faculty for VFX was smart intelectuals and they help you out a lot during your 2 years in the course. But we were the lockdown cbatch so we did not get the best out of our course

The best college for Social Sciences study

  • The course curriculum and the fieldwork
  • heated debated and discussions
  • it is very hot in the summer

After graduation, I was looking for an interesting master's course. When I learned about TISS from my school friend, the course curriculum sounded very interesting. Of the courses available at the Tuljapur campus, I was interested in Development Policy, Planning, and Practice (DPPP). The aspect of studying the analysis and framing of policies interested me. Here I could get to work with NGOs as well as state livelihoods missions. Here is my course, there are currently 23 students and per semester there are 4-5 teachers and 1-2 guest lecturers. On average, the faculty-student ratio is 1:25 The teachers are all Ph.D. holders and have long teaching experiences. They teach in classroom mode with the help of ppts and share study material on the student portal. We have a big library as well. Apart from them, the professors share some articles and video materials as well. Timely exams are followed. Difficulty level I would say 3/5.

A honest Review

The course is designed in such a way to gain knowledge from every field, they help us in having clarity in choosing our field for the future. I thought to try something different, not going into the mainstream line so that's why I chose this course. The faculties are experts in their respective fields and have a pool of vast knowledge. Their teaching methods are unique and fun sometimes. The exams are often at a medium level because the syllabus is vast we often find it difficult.

Reimagine the future with TISS

I have chosen this course because this course is new and you will become a policy analyst. The faculty is good and the teaching method is good. Term exams are shorter for us because of COVID but you will get more time. Exams are regular and you will get more and more assignments.

Tiss , not just institute it's life

The course is overall very good, The faculty here is very nice and friendly. There is a lot to learn in the course if it is studied in detail. The atmosphere of the campus is so nice that the mind goes crazy, and the hostel facilities are great.

Life at TISS ,Guwahati

The course Livelihood and Social Entrepreneurship provides a bright career to anyone who wants to pursue their career in an NGO, Thinktank, Government policies, and also with the corporate sector who holds an entrepreneurial mindset. The class holds a total strength of 21 students. The faculties are really friendly and guide every student to make sure they are clear with everything regarding their course. The teaching method is easy for every student to understand and the internship plus assignments make the exam process smoother.

Premier Institue for research and education in India

The course is well designed. The pedagogy is unique in the sense that it focuses on experiential learning through fieldwork internships all through the four semesters along with building a base through a solid theoretical understanding. At last, the course ends with an NGO stint. The batch size is around 70, therefore, the faculty to students ratio is quite healthy. The faculty are experts in their fields and are very supportive. Also, the camaraderie that develops among the students is really good. . The courses test students on their understanding of the subjects hence eradicating the notion of rote learning. Different subjects have different evaluation criteria. The course gives emphasis on building a research mindset and every student has to write a dissertation as a part of the curriculum.

Internships are best at TISS

4 Faculties minimum per 30 students is provided by the TISS. All are professional in their fields. The environment is much friendly and surely telling B.Voc is better than any other degree courses. I will suggest you go with it.

TISS Mumbai: 2 Answered Questions

How do the new hr programs of iim ranchi, nmims, and ximb measure up to the established ones of xlri, tiss, mdi and scmhrd.

The simple answer to your question is no, the new HR programs of IIM Ranchi, NMIMS, or XIMB are not at par with the established ones XLRI, TISS, MDI, and SCMHRD. The established programs especially that of XLRI are the epitome of HR programs. They cannot be compared to the new ones at any given level or parameter.

  • Faculty: The professors of XLRI are renowned throughout the industry for their competency. They specialize in almost every domain one can think of be it Law, Competency Modeling, Compensation, or Performance Management.
  • Peers: It’s the cream students who get the opportunity to get into a prestigious college like XLRI. You can see tough competition between the finest students at college. Every individual has a valuable opinion and stands to contradict others. Their thinking pattern is broad and given a case study, they look at all angles from accounting to finance to laws while proposing the solution. The situation at TISS is also quite similar.

Now one can say that the curriculum can be replicated and learned faculty can be sought to match the quality of the HR program at these institutes. But the truth is faculty and curriculum are the main but not the only factors that determine an institute's worth. Its own culture, ethics, and background have a lot to do with the programs it offers.

So one cannot match XLRIs programs no matter how much they try.

Which is better among TISS HRM, and JBIMS MMS?

TISS offers one of the best HRM programs, rivaling that of XLRI HR, and has produced highly competent individuals in this field. If you have a strong passion for HR and are confident in your choice, TISS would be an excellent choice for you to pursue this specialization.

On the other hand, if you are uncertain about your career path, it may be advantageous to keep your options open. In this scenario, it would be best to choose a college that allows you to decide on your stream later, rather than committing to a specific specialization immediately. This approach has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it ultimately comes down to personal preference and what best suits your individual needs and goals.

Regardless of your choice, both TISS and JBIMS have top-notch individuals in all areas of management, so you can be assured that you will receive a high-quality education and have the opportunity to be mentored by skilled professionals.
