Call for Application Admission Board Appointed by RD 830/2022 Prot. n. 0127511 of 30/05/2022

The PhD programme in Chemistry aims to train highly qualified professional subjects, able to organize and manage research activities in Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry, as well as in other sectors in which chemistry plays a significant  role. Attention will be devoted to the multidisciplinary aspects of the research and to its integration with related disciplines (e.g., Physics, Biochemistry, Engineering), in order to stimulate creative thinking and originality. The educational objectives of the PhD programme also include the achievement of skills relating to the organization and management of the research, the presentation and discussion of the results, the writing of reports and scientific publications, the study of issues related to intellectual property and technology transfer . The PhD programme is divided into two curricula that share the general training objectives listed above but differ in  the final purposes of the research activities.

The main activity of the PhD student in Chemistry is the research activity, conducted in University laboratories or in Research Institutions in agreement with the University of Bologna, and consisting of laboratory activity with access to instrumentations of various levels of complexity. The experimental research activities involve the use of advanced scientific instrumentation, including large equipments centrally managed by the Departments and may require access to instruments operated by national and international agencies (e.g., synchrotron, high-performance computing processors, etc.). In parallel to the experimental research activities, the PhD students will also undertake documentation and bibliographic searches using the material available in the libraries of the Departments or accessed online through the computer facilities and/or the University Library System. The training activities take place at different levels and are organized according to content (basic courses and advanced courses on a multiple choice basis, courses chosen between those offered in University degree courses or second-level University masters). In addition, PhD students are required to attend at seminars and workshops, as well as to national and international schools and conferences.

The research training activities of the PhD students are organized at different levels according to their content. In the PhD Programme both basic teachings and courses dealing with specific topics related to the various research fields are organized. In the three-year PhD period the student must acquire at least 13 CFUs, preferably attending the courses offered by the doctoral programme. In addition, the student can choose teachings offered by other PhD Schools, by other degree courses or by second-level masters within the university. All courses have some kind of final assessment. PhD students are expected to attend seminars and workshops, as well as other activities "self-managed" by the students (e.g., workshops for the presentation of the research activities, journal clubs, etc.). Finally, the PhD students must attend at least one school and one conference, either national or international.

The PhD in Chemistry provides the internationalization of the curriculum operating at different levels. Each student is required to carry out research abroad for a period of at least 6 months. Participation to international schools and conferences is also mandatory, as well as attendance at seminars organized by the Departments proposing the PhD programme and often held by researchers from research institutions and universities abroad. Students can also join international research projects and scientific initiatives involving the research groups in which they are working. The PhD program is advertised to attract foreign students and allows developing PhD thesis in cosupervision with foreign research institutions. There are currently around 10 foreign students enrolled in the PhD programme, most of them are financially supported by international mobility programs (e.g., Erasmus Mundus Action 1, Marie Curie or China Scholarship Council). At the moment many co-tutelle  agreements are active.

The products and the expected results of the research activity of PhD students are those recognized by the international scientific community. In particular, at least two products related to participation in national and international conferences or schools (e.g., posters, oral presentations, publication of reports, etc.) are expected during the three-year PhD period for each student. The achievement of this goal will be assessed during the periodical evaluations of the PhD students’ activity. It is also expected that during the PhD period, and in any case within one year after the conclusion of the doctorate, each student has produced - as author or co-author - at least two publications (or possibly patents) related to the research activity.

Fewer medical students are applying to residencies in states with abortion bans, study finds

The number of applicants to these post-graduate training programs dropped slightly across the board from spring of 2023 to spring of 2024, with larger decreases seen in states with abortion bans, by laura ungar | associated press • published may 9, 2024 • updated on may 9, 2024 at 6:55 pm.

Fewer U.S. medical school graduates are applying to residency programs, but the drop is more striking in states that ban abortion compared with other states.

Figures released Thursday by the Association of American Medical Colleges showed continuing declines after the group first spotted the difference in an analysis last year.

“It looks even more pronounced. So now, I’m looking at a trend,” said Dr. Atul Grover, a co-author of the latest report.

The number of applicants to these post-graduate training programs dropped slightly across the board from spring of 2023 to spring of 2024, with larger decreases seen in states with abortion bans. Those states saw a drop of 4.2% from the previous application cycle, compared with 0.6 % in states where abortion is legal.

Get San Diego local news, weather forecasts, sports and lifestyle stories to your inbox. Sign up for NBC San Diego newsletters.

Similarly, states with abortion bans saw a 6.7% drop in OB-GYN applicants year over year, while states without abortion restrictions saw a 0.4% increase in OB-GYN applicants. The group only looked at graduates from U.S. medical schools, not those from osteopathic or international medical schools.

More study is needed to understand why medical students aren't applying to certain residency programs. “But it certainly looks like this change in reproductive health laws and regulations is having an effect on where new physicians are choosing to train," Grover said.

In 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, paving the way for abortion bans in states.

Dr. AnnaMarie Connolly, chief of education and academic affairs for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, said in a statement that patients may ultimately suffer.

Medical students choosing where to apply to residency programs "are making a commitment to the community to work and to live there for years while they train,” she said, adding that they will care for thousands of patients during that time and may wind up practicing there.

April 29, 2024—Ottawa— International students enrich Canada’s social, cultural and economic fabric. That is why, in recent months, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has introduced reforms to the International Student Program, to ensure system integrity while protecting students from fraud and financial vulnerability.

The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced today that the temporary policy allowing students to work more than 20 hours per week off campus will come to an end on April 30, 2024, and it will not be extended. This fall, we intend to change the number of hours students may work off campus per week to 24 hours.

Students who come to Canada must be here to study. As such, allowing students to work up to 24 hours per week will ensure they focus primarily on their studies, while having the option to work, if necessary.

As we head into the summer session, students who have a scheduled academic break can continue working unlimited hours.

In developing this change, we looked at the needs of students, policies in other countries, as well as research that has shown that academic outcomes suffer the more a student works while studying. It also strikes the appropriate balance so students have the option to work without compromising academic outcomes. More details will be shared in due course.

We also continue to develop the new Recognized Institutions Framework to reward postsecondary institutions that set high standards for selecting, supporting and retaining international students. We will continue to support and protect international students from financial vulnerability and keep protecting the integrity of the International Student Program.

“Working off campus helps international students gain work experience and offset some of their expenses. As international students arrive in Canada, we want them to be prepared for life here and have the support they need to succeed. However, first and foremost, people coming to Canada as students must be here to study, not work. We will continue working to protect the integrity of our student program.” – The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

Quick facts

Recent studies conducted in the US and Canada have shown that there is a considerable decline in academic performance for students working more than 28 hours per week, and that working more than 24 hours per week increases the chances that a student will drop out of their program.

Most countries that welcome international students set limits on the number of hours they may work while they study. Australia recently changed its policy to allow a student to work 48 hours every 2 weeks. In the US, students must meet additional criteria before being permitted to work off campus at all.

In December 2023, the Government of Canada raised the cost-of-living threshold that students must meet to be approved for a study permit so they are financially prepared for life in Canada and are not as dependent on working.

International students who begin a college program delivered through a public-private curriculum licensing arrangement on or after May 15, 2024, will not be eligible for a post-graduation work permit when they graduate. Those who already started this type of program prior to May 15, 2024, will still be able to access a post-graduation work permit, provided they meet all other criteria .

The new letter of acceptance (LOA) verification process has been a success. Since its launch on December 1, 2023, through April 1, 2024, IRCC has

  •  received almost 162,000 LOAs for verification
  • confirmed nearly 142,000 LOAs as valid directly with designated learning institutions (DLIs)
  • identified almost 9,000 LOAs that didn’t match any LOA issued by a DLI or that the DLI had already cancelled before the foreign national applied for a study permit

2024 International Student Graduation Celebration recognizes student achievements

Keynote speech

To honor international graduates from fall 2023, spring 2024, and summer 2024, the University of Iowa (UI) held the 2024 International Student Graduation Celebration on Wednesday, May 8, in the International Ballroom at the Iowa Memorial Union. Over 170 people attended the event, which was hosted by Nandita Nair, a graduate student in mathematics, and Nico Sheck, a graduate student in education.

Dr. Ana Rodríguez-Rodríguez, associate professor and director of undergraduate studies in the UI Department of Spanish and Portuguese, delivered the keynote speech.

“Don't lose your adventurous spirit, which has brought you here, and remember that we never stop learning,” said Rodriguez-Rodriguez.  “Nurture the curiosity you have now because it will lead you to discover people, worlds, and possibilities that you can't even imagine. The true adventure of life begins now. Go for it!”

The event's highlight was the award ceremony, where a series of International Student Graduation Awards were presented to outstanding individuals across various areas. Here is a list of the award categories and their recipients:

  • Leadership Award: Haoyu Zheng and Raghav Sharma
  • Academic & Scholarly Achievement Award: Mengtong Liu and Meng Zhou
  • Engagement, Advocacy & Service Award: Frankline Matanji and Ugochukwu Madu
  • Most Unique Curricular Practical Training Award: Jongkwan Yun and Samaneh Najafi

The faculty and staff recognition awards, honoring those who provided outstanding support to international students at Iowa, went to Dr. Melissa Tully , professor and director of the UI School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and Shuhui Lin , coordinator for international student support and engagement in UI International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS).

Lyu and Ganim

Russell Ganim, associate provost and dean of UI International Programs, gave the closing remarks.

“We deeply admire your courage and determination,” said Ganim. “The challenge you posed to yourselves is greater than many of the challenges most people face in their lifetimes. You have risen to a level of accomplishment and self-assurance that will serve you well for the rest of your lives. The university is honored to be part of your success as we applaud and celebrate your achievements.”

The event concluded with a graduation toast led by Katherine Lyu, an international student from China.  She started by sharing a personal story.

“There was one time during ISSS advising hours when Michael [Bortscheller] asked me how I was doing,” recalled Lyu. “I said, 'Still alive,' and he burst into laughter, saying that 'still alive' is a very Midwestern expression. Then he noted, 'You're becoming very Midwestern.'”

The celebration featured musical and dance performances by the Dunn Quartet and One Spark, adding a special touch by showcasing the impressive talent of international students at Iowa.

The 2024 International Student Graduation Celebration was coordinated by a campus-wide planning committee consisting of students, faculty, staff, and administrators. This event was made possible through the generous support of UI International Programs and UI International Student Support and Engagement.

International Programs  (IP) at the University of Iowa (UI) is committed to enriching the global experience of UI students, faculty, staff, and the general public by leading efforts to promote internationally oriented teaching, research, creative work, and community engagement.  IP provides support for international students and scholars, administers scholarships and assistance for students who study, intern, or do research abroad, and provides funding opportunities and grant-writing assistance for faculty engaged in international research. Zachary May, Fulbright recipient

Two Blugolds selected for 2024-25 Fulbright awards

Monday, May 13, 2024

Photo caption: Blugold Zachary May will be returning to Argentina, where he was part of a faculty-led international immersion experience, to participate in an English teaching assistantship through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.

Immersing themselves in the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s international travel opportunities expanded the worldview of two Blugolds who have been selected for 2024-25 Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards, the recipients say.

Zachary May, who graduated in December 2023, will participate in an English teaching assistantship in Argentina, while May 2023 graduate Anna Wendorff will be an English teaching assistant in South Korea.

Colleen Marchwick, director, Center for International Education

Colleen Marchwick, director, Center for International Education

UW-Eau Claire’s combination of strong academic programs and experiential learning helps prepare students to “build the knowledge and skills to become a successful Fulbright applicant,” says Colleen Marchwick, director of UW-Eau Claire’s Center for International Education.

“The high-impact experiences at UWEC create spaces where students can put into practice their academic learning and challenge themselves to grow personally,” Marchwick says. “This combination allows students to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to thrive, whether the student is pursuing Fulbright, grad school or entering the workforce.”

UW-Eau Claire is consistently among the top master’s universities in the nation for the number of students who receive Fulbright grants.

Six Blugolds applied for Fulbright awards for 2024-25, with five becoming semifinalists. Madalyn McCabe of New Berlin, who graduated in May 2023 with a degree in social studies education, is an alternate for an English teaching assistantship in Luxembourg.

May, of Lake Geneva, graduated in December 2023 with a double major in Spanish liberal arts and Latin American studies, minors in interdisciplinary linguistics and organizational communication, and a certificate in Teaching English as a foreign language. He credits the Spanish department, Latin American and Latinx studies department, CIE and the McNair Program for preparing him for the Fulbright experience.

“It really highlights the importance of interdisciplinary degrees, high-impact practices and pushing yourself to do your best at all times,” May says of the Fulbright award. “Through both the Spanish and LAS departments I was able to better understand the importance of learning another language and another culture because that allows you to appreciate the world in so many new ways.”

May will be returning to Argentina, where he was part of a faculty-led international immersion experience in Mendoza, where he also did his TEFL internship. May also studied abroad in Chile and calls his South American experiences “huge milestones in my life.”

“I grew a lot not only academically, but as a person as well,” May says of his international experiences. “Anyone I’ve talked to can confirm that I almost always talk about my experiences abroad. I cannot emphasize enough how impactful and amazing it was for me.”

May’s future goals include earning a master’s degree in international and comparative education to learn more about educational policies at the local, national and global levels.

Wendorff, of Stillwater, Minnesota, graduated in May 2023 with a double major in English, rhetorics of science, technology and culture emphasis, and organizational communication. Wendorff says she appreciates the support of her family, friends and faculty members who “saw something in me when I doubted myself.”

“Being a Fulbright recipient ignites the deepest parts of my soul,” Wendorff says. “It aligns with long-held wholehearted wishes. My dream was to live abroad. And then my lifelong enduring love is English. To accomplish this at 23 is something indescribable.”

Anna Wendorff, Fulbright recipient

May 2023 graduate Anna Wendorff will be an English teaching assistant in South Korea through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.

Wendorff says faculty in the UW-Eau Claire’s communication and journalism department provide her with a “culture of free-flowing support,” singling out Dr. Kris Knutson, department chair and associate professor of communication and journalism, who allowed students to pursue research projects they were interested in.

Research was at the core of Wendorff’s experiences at UW-Eau Claire, giving her an opportunity to learn more about the world. She presented at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, including a presentation on news coverage of the North Korean missile crisis that piqued her interest in South Korea.

As a photography enthusiast, she is interested in exploring the geography of the Asian country and looks forward to shooting photos of the coasts and mountains of South Korea. She also plans to learn more about South Korean cooking from her host family.

Wendorff looks forward to seeing her classroom in South Korea and working with her students.

“There's a lot that I can teach but also learn from my students as well,” Wendorff says. “And that's what is so beautiful about the Fulbright program: the enduring cultural exchange and ambassadorship.”

Wendorff plans to complete a Ph.D. in English and earn a law degree, combining her academic passions.

The  Fulbright U.S. Student Program application cycle is now open. Students may contact Colleen Marchwick or Anna Dresnack in the CIE for more information.
