The Department of Chemistry will no longer require the Graduate Record Examination ( GRE ) test scores as a part of our admissions process. This decision , effective Fall 2020, came after careful consideration from the Graduate Studies Committee. Committee member and assistant professor of chemistry, Jeffrey Dick , provides an explanation of findings that led to this decision:
Over the years, UNC-CH Chemistry faculty members have noticed that the GRE is not an accurate indicator of success in graduate school. Some UNC-CH programs, such as the Biological & Biomedical Sciences Program (BBSP), have led the way in dropping the requirement. The GRE represents a rather expensive and costly barrier to admission, disadvantaging under-represented minorities (1-3). The requirement of a GRE has precluded talented students from diverse backgrounds from entering PhD programs at UNC and across the nation. At UNC-CH Chemistry, our graduate courses center on critical thinking and problem solving and are often not always test-based courses. Thus, a standardized test taken over just a few hours cannot quantify the motivation, critical thinking ability, perseverance, and passion necessary to succeed in our rigorous program. Instead, we support a more holistic approach to admissions decisions, including letters of recommendation, course performance, research experience, and personal/research statements.
Fall 2020 applications will not require the GRE. This decision saves students resources and time in planning for graduate applications. Our central goal is to motivate diversity and inclusion and recruit the most talented students to our program. PhD students are a primary driver of our scientific progress and are the cornerstones of our research programs, and any barriers to our goal to enhance diversity and inclusion and recruit the best students must be addressed. Moving forward, we are certain this decision will strengthen our UNC–CH Chemistry community.

December 1, 2024 is the deadline for submitting the online application and all required supplemental materials for Autumn 2025 admission. Before or on this date, all required application materials MUST be submitted ( submitted is defined as available for committee review and not on order for or en route to OSU). Please SUBMIT the online application well in advance of the deadline so that your referees will receive their links in plenty of time to submit their letters before the December 1st deadline. Recommendation letter upload links do not get sent to referees until the application is submitted and the fee is paid. Please be certain to take the TOEFL early enough to ensure that your scores are reported to OSU by ETS before or on December 1st. Please follow the instructions below to complete your application and consult our timeline to help you navigate our application process.
You may upload scans of your transcripts on the "Academic Data" tab of the online application. Scans of original transcripts from every college or university you have ever attended are required to be submitted before your application can be reviewed. Transfer credit indicated on a transcript does not satisfy the transcript requirement for the school at which the credits were originally earned. Scans of original, official transcripts are required to be uploaded while completing the online application or submitted via the document uploader by or on the application deadline. Online advising reports or degree audits cannot be used to satisfy the transcript requirement for the application.
The program requires submissions of your resume and personal statement on the "Final Steps/Submit" tab of the online application. If you would like to submit an updated personal statement or resume before the application deadline, please email that updated version to: [email protected]
You should address the following in your personal statement:
Our aim is to admit students who will be successful in our Ph.D. program. We are obviously interested in admitting students with high academic ability and research aptitude. But it also takes self-motivation, perseverance, and teamwork to be successful in graduate school. Don't worry about having a perfect record. Show us how you know this is the right path for you, and why you are going to succeed.
We require the submission of three letters of recommendation. All letters of recommendation must be submitted through the online system. Applicants will enter their referees' contact information within the online application. It is only after the application is submitted that each referee will receive a link by e-mail indicating where they can submit their letter of recommendation for the applicant. For this reason, please submit the online application well in advance of the deadline so that your referees will receive their links and have ample time to submit their letters before the deadline.
The most useful letters of recommendation come from Ph.D. chemists and biochemists who can comment on your research and intellectual ability and potential. We typically want to hear from all your research advisors (such as, from capstone/thesis projects or summer/REU experiences). Chemistry, biochemistry, or other science professors who can comment on your academic ability and potential are the next best choice. Letters from professors in other areas, employers (unless they are for a science research position), coaches, graduate students, family, friends or peers are of more limited value to us, in general. Be sure that at least one reference can specifically comment on your research potential, and we suggest that at least two references be scientists.
The most useful letters of recommendation will tell us about your research and academic ability and potential, as well as your independence, strengths and weaknesses, goals, community involvement, perseverance, and how you learn outside the classroom. Your references can also help us understand anything in your record that could raise questions about your potential in graduate school.
You may check on the status of your letters and send reminders to your letter writers at: go.osu.edu/lor
If you are not an United States citizen, the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department requires the submission of official TOEFL or IELTS scores directly to The Ohio State University before your application may be reviewed. The institution code for submission is: 1592 Only applicants who are citizens of, or who have received a bachelor’s degree or higher from, one of the following countries are exempt from the English proficiency requirement: Australia, Belize, the British Caribbean and British West Indies, Canada (except Quebec), England, Guyana, Ireland, Liberia, New Zealand, Scotland, the United States and Wales.
Applicants are solely responsible for ensuring the completion of their application before or on the December 1st deadline. Each applicant should review their application status page to ensure the receipt of required materials. Please allow several business days for submitted items to appear as completed on the application status page. If submitted items do not appear within 3 business days, please e-mail Nick Rodgers at [email protected].

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — For prospective graduate students applying to enroll in the 2020-21 academic year and beyond, Brown University will no longer require Graduate Records Examination (GRE) test scores for admission to 24 of its Ph.D. programs.
Eliminating the requirement will enable the programs to attract a wider pool of applicants, Graduate School leaders said. The move adds to a growing array of initiatives at Brown to reduce barriers that discourage some students from groups historically underrepresented in higher education and from low-income backgrounds from applying for admission.
“The future success of graduate education at Brown depends on the diverse, innovative and intellectually independent candidates we admit and the varied skill sets they bring to their disciplines,” said Dean of the Graduate School Andrew G. Campbell. “By removing the Graduate School’s GRE requirement and allowing programs to decide whether to require the exam, we will broaden the talent pool of students who apply to and have access to graduate education at Brown.”
A growing body of evidence has demonstrated that the GRE is not always an accurate predictor of success in graduate school, Campbell said. In considering prospective doctoral students, Brown evaluates a wide range of factors, from academic strength and intellectual curiosity to research experiences, through application components including transcripts, letters of recommendation, personal statements and in-person interviews.
“Twenty-four of our doctoral programs have decided that the GRE is not required for a holistic review of potential applicants to their disciplines,” Campbell added. “This, in conjunction with a new transitional stipend for newly matriculating doctoral students and our fully-funded Ph.D. and MFA programs, continues our work to ensure that a Brown education is accessible to students from all income groups and that all graduate students can thrive on campus.”
Brown faculty who direct individual Ph.D. programs evaluate applications from prospective students in consultation with leaders from the Graduate School. Already, GRE scores were considered as one among a wide variety of factors weighed as each applicant’s credentials are considered individually.
“We’re not just looking at scores — we’re looking at students,” said Marlina Duncan, associate dean of diversity initiatives at the Graduate School.
Financial considerations such as exam fees, GRE prep-course tuition or tutoring expenses — and logistical challenges such as finding transportation and taking time away from school or work to take the test — can discourage some prospective students, particularly from historically underrepresented groups or first-generation or low-income backgrounds, from applying.
Moreover, many academic leaders said the GRE does not capture a candidate’s predilection toward critical thinking, innovation and collaboration — three areas that are crucial to success in the Graduate School at Brown.
“We’re looking for the fire — we’re looking for the drive,” said Anita Zimmerman, graduate program director for Brown’s molecular pharmacology and physiology program. “We’re looking for the motivation from someone who isn’t daunted by obstacles and is willing to dive into research with creativity and an ability to solve difficult problems. Those kinds of indicators are not easy to put into numbers, but they’re much more useful and telling than a score on an exam that repeatedly has been shown to be a very poor predictor of student success.”
Zimmerman noted that in recent years, the program had already begun to decrease emphasis on GRE scores in lieu of recommendation letters, personal statements and interviews.
Ravit Reichman, director of graduate studies for the English program, agreed that test scores have been but one factor in the department’s evaluation of prospective students.
“Not once in my time at Brown have we had a substantive conversation about a candidate’s GRE scores,” Reichman said. “We’ve always focused more on a person’s curiosity and intellectual itinerary — that is, how they got to thinking about the ideas they think about, and how they express that on the page.”
The Graduate School’s decision to eliminate the overarching GRE requirement enables program leaders across Brown’s 51 doctoral programs to make individual choices about whether to continue to require scores. The 2020-21 application for admission is open now on the school’s website. The following academic programs will no longer require GRE scores:
The GRE has been a longstanding requirement for many PhD programs in the United States. However, you can now do a PhD in the USA without a GRE as some universities offer PhD programs without requiring the GRE as part of the admissions process. This trend is gaining popularity due to the belief that the GRE may not be the most accurate predictor of a student’s success in a doctoral program.

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized entrance exam for all graduate schools in the United States. It is one of the most commonly required exams for doctorate programs besides the GMAT for management programs such as MBA.
Candidates seeking admission to graduate schools in countries other than the USA and Canada may also have to take this exam. The Educational Testing Service conducts the GRE. The validity of scores for the GRE General Test is five years. The GRE test duration is about 3 hours 45 minutes.
For decades, the GRE score has been used as a primary admission criterion for many institutions in the United States, and the USA has been the dreamland for many international students who wish to pursue a PhD abroad . Yet, the test has been considered to have many shortcomings.
For one, it’s seen as a costly tool and largely a test of access to study in the USA rather than a test of aptitude for study. The US review has also been pegged as closely correlating success in the exam, which some admit might not be the case. Thus, other imaginative pathways have been developed to provide students across the world access to pursuing and funding their higher education in the USA universities.
In order to provide you with guidance on various methods to pursue a PhD program in the United States without the requirement of GRE scores, the following key alternatives have been identified:

Entering the ph.d. program.
The official course of study in the Ph.D. graduate program begins during the second week of August, one week before the official start of the Fall Semester at Cornell. All incoming Ph.D. students take a series of graduate proficiency exams in Organic, Inorganic, and Physical Chemistry provided by the American Chemical Society (ACS). All Ph.D. students then meet with the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) and select professors in their area of interest for advice on course selection.
Read the Chemistry and Chemical Biology Ph.D. Program Handbook, here .
Incoming Ph.D. students generally take three graduate courses during their first semester at Cornell. A minimum grade of B- is required in each course for the student to remain in good standing with the department and the university. An additional three courses are then taken in the spring semester, for a total of six required courses. Depending on a student’s academic background and research interests, one or more of these courses may be taken outside of the Graduate Field of Chemistry & Chemical Biology. Additional courses are often taken by Ph.D. students in the later years of their dissertation work, if they are deemed useful by the student's research advisor and/or special committee (see below). For the full list of courses offered at Cornell, please visit the Class Roster to select the appropriate department and semester.
During the first month of the Fall semester, all incoming Ph.D. students are expected to attend a series of research orientation lectures in which the faculty provide an overview of their current research projects. Students are expected to attend research group meetings of faculty of interest, talk to other students and postdoctoral research associates, and discuss potential research projects with at least three faculty members. Students then officially join research groups by November 1.
All Ph.D. students in C&CB are required to choose three or more faculty members to serve as a special committee to represent their major (and minor, if applicable) areas of study. The student’s faculty research advisor serves as chair of the special committee and usually has primary responsibility for directing the graduate student’s research and studies. Degree requirements are kept to a minimum and there are no specific course requirements. The number of formal courses required depends on students' academic background, chosen concentration, and the advice of the special committee.
Every Ph.D. student takes an oral examination for admission to candidacy (A-exam), typically during their second year of graduate study. The A-exam takes place after the student’s coursework has been completed and before the commencement of full-time research. The thesis, which is the final outcome of this research, must constitute an original contribution to chemical knowledge and be defended at a final examination overseen by the special committee (B-exam). The Ph.D. degree is awarded on successful defense of the thesis and students typically take five years to complete the Ph.D. program.
Complete financial support accompanies every offer of admission to the Ph.D. program. Each Ph.D. student is therefore guaranteed at least five years of full financial support as long as he or she makes satisfactory progress toward the Ph.D. degree. This support includes a 12-month stipend, a full tuition award, and health insurance. Financial support comes in the form of teaching assistantships, graduate research assistantships, research fellowships, and several NIH-funded training grant programs, such as the Chemistry Biology Interface (CBI) Training Program . Eligible applicants are strongly encouraged to seek federally funded fellowships, such as those available from the National Science Foundation (NSF) as well as other government or private agencies.
The graduate program in Chemistry offers exciting opportunities to pursue cutting–edge scientific research in physical, inorganic, organic, biological and nano chemistry. The department hosts numerous well–funded research projects that form the basis of graduate student dissertations.
During the first semester, students enroll in four graduate level courses, including CHEM 2870, and choose a research advisor among the faculty in the department. Additionally, first year students receive fellowship support and are not required to teach.
A significant feature of Brown's doctoral program in chemistry is that almost all students start their research during the second semester of the first year. During later semesters, the research project becomes the student's primary responsibility, and leads to a Ph.D. dissertation usually within four or five years.

We recognize that it can be financially burdensome to relocate to a new city to attend a Ph.D. program. Students who are accepted to Ph.D. programs at JHU can apply to receive a $1500 need-based grant to offset the costs of relocating to JHU.
These grants provide funding to a portion of incoming students who, without this money, may otherwise not be able to afford to relocate to JHU for their Ph.D. program.
This is not a merit-based grant. Applications will be evaluated solely based on financial need.

The PhD in chemistry is primarily a research degree. It is awarded to students who have displayed competence in planning and conducting original research in the field of chemistry, demonstrated a broad familiarity with the science of chemistry, understanding in the application of the scientific method, and gained a thorough knowledge of their field of specialization.
Students build a solid foundation in all four core areas of chemistry (analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical), and a thorough knowledge of their chosen field of specialization. In the first part of the PhD program, students take at least one formal classroom course in each the core areas of chemistry as outlined in the course requirements below. The courses must be completed successfully (B- or better) by the end of the third semester.
Since original research is the primary requirement for the PhD degree, a student selects a research supervisor and begins research before the end the first year. The student and research supervisor then select two faculty members to serve as the student's Doctoral Research Committee. The Committee, in conjunction with the student's research adviser, take over the advisory function from the graduate committee and guides the student's work to promote development as an independent investigator.
Thus, in addition to research each student must complete the following requirements:
At least one of the following analytical chemistry courses:
At least one of the following inorganic chemistry courses:
At least one of the following organic chemistry courses:
At least one of the following physical chemistry courses:
