PhD under Direct Admission Category 2021-22

Eligibility criteria for ph.d. admission.

In-service Teachers/ Working Professionals/ Fresh Master’s Degree holders aspiring to be teachers are eligible to apply for admission in Ph.D. programmes subject to the following minimum eligibility criteria:

• Ph.D. under QIP Scheme of AICTE: Please refer the eligibility criteria prescribed as per the AICTE-QIP scheme information brochure available at https://qip.aicte- india.org/assets/manuals/QIP_Admission_Brochure_21_05_2024.pdf.
• Relevant Master’s Degree or Equivalent in Engineering/ Applied Sciences/Management with a minimum CGPA of 6.00 on a 10-point scale or 60% (55% in case of SC/ ST/ PWD/ OBC/ EWS) marks in aggregate where marks are awarded.
• Qualified GATE/ NET/ other such national fellowship test or Ph.D. Entrance Test of NITTTR, Chandigarh in the respective discipline.
• Note: For the candidates opting for Modular Ph.D., an experience of minimum two years is essential.
• Any other additional eligibility criteria as per sponsoring/ funding agency’s requirement will also be applicable.

Programme Duration

• Ph.D. Programme shall be for a minimum duration of three (3) years for regular and four (4) years for modular candidates from the date of admission.
• The maximum permissible duration is six (6) years from the date of admission to the Ph.D. programme.
• A candidate does not require to seek any extension for submission of thesis upto 6 years from the date of admission. After 6 years, a maximum of one year extension may be granted by the Director, on the recommendation of the concerned Supervisor and Dean (Academics and Students) on the basis of valid justifiable grounds. The total period for completion of Ph.D. programme should not exceed 7 years from the date of admission in such cases.
• The women candidates and Persons with Disability (more than 40% disability) may be allowed a further relaxation of one year beyond 7 years. The total period for completion of Ph.D. programme should not exceed 8 years from the date of admission in such cases.
• The women candidates may be provided Maternity Leave/ Child Care Leave in the entire duration of Ph.D. up to 240 days. These 240 days shall be inclusive of the maximum stipulated period of 8 years.
• If a candidate fails to submit the thesis in 7 years for men and 8 years for women and Persons with Disability (stipulated period) as per the above-mentioned clauses, his/her registration will automatically stand cancelled.

Admission Procedure

• Applications may be submitted through email at [email protected] along with self-attested copy of relevant documents and proof of payment of non-refundable fee of Rs. 1000/- on or before the prescribed date.
• A non-refundable fee of Rs. 500/- is to be paid for additional discipline applied. A candidate is permitted to apply for a maximum of two disciplines only.
• A valid GATE/NET/other such national fellowship test or Ph.D. Entrance Test of NITTTR Chandigarh in the respective discipline.
• For engineering branches, the syllabus of the test will be that of the GATE-2024 for the corresponding branch.
• For Management, the syllabus of the entrance test will be that of Management (including Business Admn. Mgt./Marketing/ Marketing Mgt./Industrial Relations and Personnel Mgt./ Personnel Mgt./Financial Mgt./Co-operative Management), available on https://www.ugcnetonline.in/syllabus-new.php
• For Physics and Mathematics, the syllabus of the entrance test will be that of Physical Sciences and Mathematical Sciences respectively, available on https://csirhrdg.res.in/Home/Index/1/Default/2666/78
• The entrance test will consist of 50 Multi-Choice Questions (MCQs) and the duration of the test will be 1 hour. The test will comprise of 25 questions from the relevant discipline and the remaining 25 questions related to basics of research methodology.
• Applications for the entrance test may be submitted through email at [email protected] along with proof of payment of fee on or before the prescribed date provided in the application form.
• Awardees of JRF/National/ International fellowship for pursuing Ph.D. may seek admission in the Ph.D. Programmes throughout the year.
• the candidate’s competence for the proposed research;
• the feasibility of conducting the proposed research work at the institution;
• the likely contribution of the proposed area of research to new/additional knowledge as per the mandate of NITTTR Chandigarh.
• The institute may decide the number of eligible candidates to be called for an interview based on the number of Ph.D. seats available in the respective department.
• For the selection of candidates, a weightage of 70% for the Academic Performance Index and 30% for the performance in the interview shall be given.

This test is conducted twice a year at all India level for admission in various Ph.D. programmes in PGIMER, CHANDIGARH.

Candidates who have their own fellowship, as Joint CSIR-UGC-NET- JRF, ICMR-JRF/ICMR-SRF/DBT-JRF/DBT-SRF/Graduate aptitude test (GATE)/INSPIRE fellowship/UGC-JRF/UGC-SRF/CSIR-JRF/CSIR-SRF/DST-JRF/DST-SRF and the In-service Medical faculty of PGIMER, Chandigarh, are exempted from entrance test and appear in counseling directly.

PGIMER also provides institutional fellowship to 6-7 students per session based on this entrance test. The candidates will be eligible for the award of PGI fellowship on the merit position obtained by them in the final selection of the Ph.D. program. Rs. 25000/- P.M. (fixed) and additional thesis grant of Rs. 5000/- (one time) is provided as fellowship.

SCHEME OF EXAMINATION

There are 2 parts in the test.

1 st part, the aptitude test comprises (a) General Science (b) English, (c) Biostatistics & Research Methodology consists of 30 marks. All questions in this part are compulsory with each question carrying one mark.

2 nd part is Stream Specific (Medical, Non-Medical (Life Science and behavioral Sciences), theory part of the question paper will contain 75 questions and the candidates may attempt any 50 questions. Each question carries one mark. There will be negative marking to the extent of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer in the theory paper.

Admission to the PhD programme is made on the basis of interview or written test (GATE/ NET syllabus) or both as determined by PhD Admission Committee of the concerned Department provided the candidate fulfills all the requirements at the Institute level and the selected candidate deposits the requisite fees for the PhD Programme.

Admission Process

The online applications received by the institute during admissions will be processed in the respective departments for written test/interview.

Note: Internal faculty/ staff members, who are GATE/ NET qualified, will be eligible for admission through interview only, while Non-GATE/ Non-NET candidates will be admitted through interview and written test.

The admission to PhD programme at any time during the session is allowed to give opportunity to candidates with high accomplishments who have been awarded government recognized scholarships in Sciences, Engineering, Social Sciences and Management and have the requirement of joining within a stipulated time frame. Such admissions shall be approved by the Chairman Senate on the recommendations of DRC and Dean Academic Affairs.

The PhD admission committee of the department will consist of Head of the department, members of DRC and potential supervisors in various areas.

Chandigarh, August 25, 2024: Panjab University, Chandigarh conducted Ph.D. Entrance Test 2024 on Sunday.  There were two papers, Paper I (Objective Type) and Paper II (Subjective Type). The timings of Paper – I Objective Type was from 10.00 am to 11.00 am and Paper II Subjective Type was from 11.30 am to 1.30 pm (for all faculties except UIAMS deptt.)  and 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm (for UIAMS Deptt. only).  Total 04 centres were created at Panjab University Campus, Chandigarh. The detailed percentage of the candidates appeared in this entrance test subject wise is as under:-

Total 73.55% (698 out of 949) candidates appeared in Paper – I Objective  type, and 73.22% (700 out of 956) appeared in Paper II Subjective type. Flying squad and observers were sent to every centre for routine checking and smooth conduct of the test. The test was conducted satisfactorily and no untoward incident was reported from any of the examination centres.

New Delhi:  Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh is inviting applications for admission to its PhD program for the academic session 2023-24. Interested candidates can apply online by submitting their applications by November 11, 2022. 

As per  PGIMER Chandigarh , candidates who wish to apply for PhD admission can now submit their online applications along with a copy of required documents and payment of application fee. The admission form is available on the official website of the university at pgimer.edu.in.
