Penn State's Nick Dawkins Named to Allstate AFCA Good Works Team

Mark wogenrich | 5 hours ago.

Penn State center Nick Dawkins celebrates after a turnover against Indiana in 2023.

  • Penn State Nittany Lions

Penn State center Nick Dawkins, a fifth-year senior and Nittany Lions captain, has been named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. The team recognizes community service in college football. Dawkins is among 22 players, including 11 in the FBS, named to the Good Works Team. As a result, Dawkins also became a semifinalist for the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy, which will be announced after the season.

Dawkins, who became Penn State's starting center this season, is among the team's most respected leaders on and off the field. He won Penn State's Public Service Award in 2023 and the program's Letterman's Club Scholarship, awarded annually to a graduate student. Dawkins was president of Penn State's chapter of Lift For Life and participates in community service projects including PALS and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Dawkins founded the Dawkins Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization that seeks to enrich communities by engaging with youth. According to Penn State, the foundation has awarded scholarships to three high school seniors and provides book bags to students in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania, where Dawkins attended Parkland High School.

Dawkins also participated in developing a sports camp at the YMCA of Centre County, serves on the board of former Penn State football player Devon Still's "Still Strong Foundation" and chaired the diversity, equity and inclusion committee of Penn State's student-athlete advisory committee.

Dawkins earned his bachelor's degree in recereation, parks and tourism management and is pursuing a graduate certificate in organization development and change essentials.

"You need to give back," Dawkins said during the team's visit to Penn State Health Children's Hospital in May. "People lose sight that this whole football thing is bigger than you. Put a smile on someone’s face? That's huge. ... That goes to the humility and being humble and all the things that we are in our program and our tradition."

The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team includes 22 players, 11 each from the FBS and FCS, and one honorary head coach, Notre Dame's Marcus Freeman.

“It is amazing to see the extra efforts and community service these 22 young men put out on a daily basis,” Craig Bohl, executive director of the American Football Coaches Association, said in a statement. “Not to be outdone, our honorary head coach Marcus Freeman shows that you can still give back and help your community even when you are the head coach of an FBS program like Notre Dame. I congratulate Coach Freeman and these 22 student-athletes for making the 2024 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.”

The winner of the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy will be announced in December at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN. Fans can vote for their favorite player for the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy .

  • Nondegree students may not be able to register for all courses. Preference is given to degree students, and some courses are controlled by graduate programs.
  • Nondegree students can later submit a new graduate application to apply to a degree program. No more than 15 credits of course work accumulated in nondegree status may count toward a graduate degree.

You must submit an application when changing a major or degree, and for most (but not all) situations when you are applying to resume study.

Learn more about resuming study and changing programs .

If you are applying for Level I Instructional, Supervisory, Educational Specialist, and Administrative certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education upon the recommendation of the University, you must apply using the degree application. First, select your major in the application, then choose "Pennsylvania Educators Level I Certification" as the degree selection. Learn more about PDE certification .

Minimum Admission Requirements

To be eligible for a degree program, you must meet both of the following:

All applicants to a Penn State graduate program must hold a degree from degree-granting institution that is officially recognized in the country in which it operates. See below to search by country for accepted documents from institutions in that country. The degree must be one of the following types:

  • Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution
  • Tertiary (postsecondary) degree that is deemed comparable to a four-year bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution.

Check your intended graduate program’s website for specific requirements. These may be higher or more stringent than the general Penn State graduate program requirements.

Search for Minimum Eligibility by Country

View the admission requirements from a selected country by choosing from the drop-down list below. The requirements listed for each country are seen most often from institutions within the selected country. Academic credentials will be reviewed on an individual basis to determine degree comparability and eligibility for admission.

Transcript Requirements

When applying for any graduate program, you will need to upload a scanned copy of official transcripts from institutions you attended previously. Note that there is a difference between “official” and “unofficial” transcripts, and only some documents will be accepted in the application process.

Applicants will be required to upload copies of official transcripts or documents from all post-secondary institutions attended, whether the degree was completed or not.

For institutions outside the U.S., acceptable documents may include:

  • a marksheet
  • record of courses
  • degree, study, or provisional certificate
  • original diploma
  • diploma supplement
  • other official documents that are specific to a country

Applicants are required to include copies of official English translations in addition to native language documents.

Acceptable English translations must be completed by one of the following sources:

  • degree-issuing institution
  • ministry of education
  • any government translator from the institution's country
  • any U.S. government agency translator
  • an American Translators Association (ATA) translator

During the application process, you will upload scanned copies of transcripts from your current institution. Then, after you graduate from your institution, you will need to send a second set of official transcripts indicating that you received the original degree listed on your first set of transcripts.

Accuracy of Application Materials

Penn State is committed to ensuring that all applicants and students uphold the highest level of academic integrity. Any false information, omissions, and/or misstatements that are made in an application — including but not limited to the uploading of copies of transcripts that differ in any substantive way from the official transcripts/documents — will result in admission, registration, and credit(s) for course work completed being voided for the applicant. Additionally, information relating to the false information, omissions, and/or misstatements may be distributed to other academic institutions, governmental agencies, and/or other third parties.

English Proficiency

The language of instruction at Penn State is English. All international applicants must submit scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), with some exceptions. If you do not meet these minimum requirements, you may be granted provisional admission until you complete certain requirements.

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): overall score of at least 80 with a minimum speaking score of 19
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS): minimum score of 6.5

Provision Admission

Applicants with the test scores below those listed above may be considered for provisional admission. To be fully admitted, students must complete specified English course work with a grade of B or higher during their first semester of enrollment. The course(s) to meet this qualification will be based on the applicant’s area(s) of deficiency in test results and are listed the graduate education admissions policy (GCAC-305 Procedures) .

Exemptions from English Proficiency Testing

International applicants who successfully complete Penn State’s non-credit Intensive English Communication Program by earning the certification will be exempted from the English proficiency test requirement. Similar programs at other institutions are not provided exemption.

International applicants who have received a baccalaureate or a graduate degree in one of the following countries are exempt from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement:

  • American Samoa
  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • British Virgin Islands

  • Puerto Rico
  • Republic of Ireland
  • South Africa
  • St Kitts and Nevis

Ph.D. in Kinesiology

Woman monitoring runner with mask on treadmill in laboratory

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Kinesiology prepares graduates for careers in research and teaching at universities as well as for careers in industry.

Doctoral students in our program investigate fundamental questions about kinesiology and gain broad understanding of the research methods used to answer these questions. Students pursuing the Ph.D. will attain a significantly greater depth of knowledge in the chosen area of emphasis than would be encountered in the M.S. program. All Ph.D. students complete a dissertation that typically several original works of research leading to multiple publications in one of six interdisciplinary areas of study:

Dual-Title Ph.D. Opportunities

Dual-title degrees give doctoral students the opportunity to receive significant training in two different programs and thus broaden the scope of a doctorate in Kinesiology.   Upon graduation, the Ph.D. degree carries the designation of  Kinesiology as well as a secondary program. Students in dual-title degree programs complete an integrated curriculum that goes beyond a Kinesiology degree with a minor in another field. Two dual-title Ph.D. programs are currently offered:

  • Ph.D. in Kinesiology and Bioethics
  • Ph.D. in Kinesiology and Clinical and Translational Sciences

Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Additive manufacturing and design (m.s. and m.eng).

penn state phd management

The one-year Master of Science in Additive Manufacturing and Design (M.S. AMD), Master of Engineering in Additive Manufacturing and Design (M.Eng AMD), and Graduate Credit Certificate in Additive Manufacturing and Design programs offer students and working engineers a unique opportunity to become technically outstanding experts in additive manufacturing in residence at University Park or online via  Penn State World Campus .

The programs will prepare students to:

  • Apply foundational knowledge, critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity in the uses of additive manufacturing and associated design tools and methods.
  • Grow as leaders in manufacturing while maintaining the highest ethical standards in applying additive manufacturing to industry-relevant problems and design challenges.
  • Strive for the advancement of the state-of-art in additive manufacturing and design.
  • Develop innovative solutions through new design paradigms in their respective industries.

The M.S. AMD and M.Eng AMD degrees are 30-credit degree programs that are offered resident, in the case of the M.S. AMD, and online, in the case of the M.Eng AMD, to graduate students to provide the analytical and practical skills required to digitally design, develop, analyze, numerically model, optimize, fabricate, and inspect new components and subassemblies using appropriate additive manufacturing technologies. This requires knowledge across multiple domains, including industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering design, engineering science, and materials science.

All additive manufacturing and design students will be required to enroll in five core courses that cover additive manufacturing processes, materials for additive manufacturing, the engineering and scientific foundations of additive manufacturing, design for additive manufacturing, and a hands-on laboratory experience in additive manufacturing.

In addition to the core courses, students will be required to enroll in electives (8 credits) that include design, materials, manufacturing, technical writing, technical presentations, and supply chain, along with enrolling in a seminar course (1 credit, not counted toward the degree). To meet the degree requirements, M.Eng students will also be required to complete a culminating project that leads to a paper and M.S. students will be required to complete either a paper or thesis. Read more about Additive Manufacturing and Design Courses .

The Graduate Credit Certificate in Additive Manufacturing and Design is a 12-credit, non-laboratory graduate certificate that can provide you with knowledge and skills in additive manufacturing and design that can open doors to new career paths and further education focused on additive manufacturing and design. It can serve as an entry into fields that make use of 3D printing, including aerospace, consumer goods, energy, medical, and oil/gas. It’s also an excellent way for already established engineers to add foundational knowledge of this emerging technology to their résumé and skill set.

The programs are housed in the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering , but in reflection of the multi-disciplinary nature of additive manufacturing, will integrate graduate coursework across multiple departments from two colleges, Engineering and Earth and Mineral Sciences . Contributing departments include  Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering ,  Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering ,  Engineering Science and Mechanics ,  School of Engineering Design, Technology, and Professional Programs , and Materials Science and Engineering. Visit the  Key Faculty  page to learn more about the instructors.
