We collect personal data from you within this application to enable us to consider your application to the Nuffield Research Placements Programme, to manage your placement if you are successful and to monitor and evaluate the programme. This means that your data will be shared with the Nuffield co-ordinator for your region. Your personal details, details of your qualifications, your personal statement and your teacher reference may also be shared with organisations who may consider you for a placement. We will not share your personal data with any other third party without your consent.
We will assess your application using a scoring system. We particularly encourage students from disadvantaged backgrounds to apply to the programme. In order to make sure that we are reaching these students successfully, as part of the scoring system we assess the backgrounds of all our applicants. We do this by looking at where your home postcode is ranked in the Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) and at what percentage of students at your school are eligible for free school meals. The scores for your application will be shared with your regional co-ordinator but will not be shared with any other third party.
If we are able to offer you a placement, we will keep your data on our system but will anonymise it after six years. We will keep the records of unsuccessful applications for one year.

- Where we need to comply with a legal obligation.
When we collect information about your background, we do that for the purposes of equality of opportunity or treatment. The lawful basis we use for this is article 9(2)(g) of the GDPR and Schedule 1 part 2(8) of the DPA2018. We will supply our funders with statistical data for research purposes which will not include any details that could be used to identify you.
When we collect any information about dietary, adjustments or access requirements we also need your consent under article 9(2)(a) as this type of information is classed as special category data. We will only share that information with those directly involved in the coordination or delivery of your placement.

Research Placements are 2-week collaborations with a STEM-related knowledge expert on a live research question or area of development. While producing a scientific or technical report and poster, this opportunity ensures that students contribute meaningfully to the host organisation's current work.

Nuffield Research Placements (NRP), formerly known as Nuffield Science Bursaries, has supported approximately 20,000 post-16 students over the last 25 years to engage in real life research working alongside Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths’ (STEM) professionals.
I'm thinking about applying for the Nuffield Research Placement (ideally to do with biology) and I had a few questions about it: How competitive is it? How useful is it for getting into university? Does it provide you with useful skills that employers or universities like?
Explain below why you think you would benefit from a Nuffield Research Placement. You might mention for example whether there are any particular areas of science that interest you, what your career plans are and any previous experience you have had which might be relevant.
