Broadening your assignment selection enables you to be more versatile and able to adapt to any operating environment, be it in a home station or deployed. Being the expert and having well-rounded assignments helps to ensure that the NCO is able to set the example in all that he does. The professional NCO is the enforcer of standards and discipline.
NCOs must search for and attend these broadening experiences. They must get out of their comfort zones and strive for advanced knowledge. They must do this for several reasons. First and foremost is to improve our relevance as the "backbone of the Army.". Second, we must do this to better explain the "why.".
Ultimately, broadening assignments improve individual officers and benefit the Army. Broadening assignments generally fall into one of the five categories listed below, but these may not cover all possibilities. Functional, Tactical, or Institutional. This category includes positions in Army units at various echelons.
