Three Expectations For My Grade 9 Academic English Teacher

Starting grade nine was quite frightening for me. After staring at the screen for six or more hours, I found it hard to study and concentrate, so I created a list of three expectations for my Grade 9 Academic English teacher. 

Firstly, an important factor I look for in my teacher is their communication skills; having communication skills is a key to good teaching. A teacher should always pay attention to their students, making sure that their class can follow along. An effective teacher continuously checks if they can help out a student in need, they also should be understanding. An example of this is if a student doesn’t understand something that was already explained and asks for clarification, the teacher should be ready to help and shouldn’t get mad and blame the student. I’ve encountered plenty of students asking for clarification, but the teacher ends up accusing the student of not paying attention and being disrespectful. After that, the student doesn’t volunteer in classroom discussions. However, if the student repeated the question multiple times, I understand the frustration of repeating the instructions/answer numerous times.  

Next expectation I have is the teacher encouraging students, like building confidence. It helps when teachers help students slowly get out of their comfort zone, not forcing them, but instead letting them get comfortable with the environment and slowly pulling them out of their comfort zone. 

Another example is when a student answers a question wrong, instead of putting them down, I hope you help them explain why they are incorrect. The best way to gain confidence is to have positive comments and feedback; pointing out what they did great makes them proud, and then you could explain what they could have done better. My last expectation is having a teacher let the class explore different learning styles. This is quite an effective way to help keep their mind growing and explore different types of learning that might suit them the best. Having students engage in different learning styles also helps keep their focus in class. An example is when the teacher only has students read and write down notes. For learners who prefer hands-on activities, it is unfair to them since they might not concentrate, meaning they won’t do as well and won’t keep up with their peers. I was glad to hear that we will be including some drama in our English unit because I am more of a visual learner/hands-on learner. 

Once again, I understand that English has more writing which I do not mind. However, I request more activities because they attract the students’ attention, making learning more fun. 

To sum it up, these are the three expectations I have as a student for my teacher. I hope you can live up to at least one of the expectations, whether it be having proper communication skills, encouraging students, or letting students engage in different learning styles. Currently, I enjoy your classes and look forward to future lessons.

In my student teaching I attempt to emphasize knowledge gained by feeling. Feelings stir the intellect, provoke reflection, and inspire authentic inquiry. Through dialogue and independent and collaborative work, I develop my skills of imagination and reflection and put them to the purpose of understanding learning – to unveil what has been tacit and to make explicit my thought processes and the impact of my life experiences to my behaviors in classroom.

I had an equal responsibility to improve their learning. I needed to reflect on the implications of this new responsibility. I had always seen my role in terms of providing language support for my students until they were capable of assuming that role for themselves. I believeI will work diligently to further my skills.

Clear, measurable, and realistic – that is how I evaluate the efficacy of students process. A change in the quality of being, growth in the quality of consciousness, evolution of spirit: these are the results I am talking about. It is about who I am, not what I know. It is about why I do what I do, not what I say, or what I do. I teach students their roles and my expectations. As a student teacher, I work to identify readiness-to-learn moments. For example, I identifyrequired vocabulary and write them on the chalkboard, or I conclude a quick role-play activity to focus attention on the correct words or phrases to use. I conduct ongoing needs analysis so as to effectively prepare for whole-class and more individualized instruction.

There are rewards and problems that often form part and parcel of the teaching profession. They can be classed as either intrinsic or extrinsic depending on their effect on a teacher. The former classification refers to those effects directly experienced by the teacher while the latter is external. My expected rewards will include improved status in the community, desire to interact with students, and flexible work schedule while challenges entail meeting parents’ and students’ long-term aims, multidimensional classroom issues, and simultaneous class events.

The desire to work with students is an automatic reward that I expect to reap from my role as a teacher. As a teacher, I will have the ability to share with learners directly everything about life and study materials. I love it when I change the lives of others. As a teacher, I expect to change the way the students think and alter the pessimistic ones to view life in a more optimistic manner. In my viewpoint, I often believe that if a person could change one life of a person, it is equivalent to changing lives of a thousand more persons. It is because that one person can have an effect on others and the chain continues. One of my principles is that everyone is equal before God and no student is better than the other. Therefore, everyone has the capacity to reap the benefits of education.  

My status will change as a teacher since the community will entrust me with their children. In fact, I don’t expect, but it is something that will just come naturally if I do my work diligently. It is true that teachers spend the most time with students as opposed to parents. Therefore, as a teacher, the community entrusts teachers with the mandate to show their children the right way (Ryan, Cooper, " Bolic, 2016, p.5). It is something that I am prepared to do to the best of my ability. Therefore, the respect that a teacher reaps from the community is often immense and I expect to deliver the best ethics to students so that they can be responsible members of the society to earn equivalent respect among the school community.

As a teacher, the flexible work schedule is one of the most important rewards of teaching. I will have the capacity to control my lessons, determine which topics to tackle and at what time, and the ability to govern my lessons. Flexibility and self-control give the teacher to impact students’ lives positively (Ryan, Cooper, " Bolic, 2016, p. 6).  Also, being able to share the lessons and work schedule with my friends and siblings at home will foster my status as a teacher.

Meeting the students achieve the long-term goals is one of the toughest challenges that I expect to get as a teacher. Students have lots of things going on in their lives and maintaining the focus is often quite difficult. However, I will keep communicating with my students constantly to keep them on the right track. Undoubtedly, some students cannot visualize the benefits they may get out of education in future, and this makes it hard to convince them to stay focused in class.  The same case applies to parents. They often expect a lot from their children; therefore, they would expect instructors to achieve whatever they perceive.

Simultaneous class events may disrupt class activities. For example, a student may require special care while the lessons are ongoing, which may disrupt the class progress. I expect such things to occur, and some may even be more challenging to the best of my ability. In my years as a student, we had a student who was epileptic. Sometimes he would fall down when sick and this interrupted the lessons. Some students would switch off immediately while some would resume to normalcy after the incident. Also, I will be organizing students to work in groups in class, which is sometimes difficult to concurrently monitor. Therefore, such occurrences are natural, but they significantly upset class progress.

The multidimensional classroom is another challenge that I will expect; some students do need special attention to grasp concepts, some are nagging and are distractors, and any other associated issue. I will not need special skills to understand that students are diverse in terms of needs, study capacity, and concentration capability. There is no doubt that this is the most daunting problem that every teacher may face in a teaching profession (Ryan, Cooper, " Bolic, 2016). The concentration of other learners would still be jeopardized even if an instructor would try to solve them. Note that some scholars may even switch off completely in the presence of distraction in class while others may operate normally as before. It depends on the ability of a learner.  

As much as I prepare for the teaching job as a profession, the rewards and challenges are conditions I anticipate. Apart from salaries and benefits, there are other merits that are fundamental. As a teacher, I will gain a noble status consigned by the community, desire to interact with students and change lives, and lastly, flexibility in work schedule. Besides mentioning advantages, I expect to encounter challenges while disseminating mu duties in class. They may include living up to students’ and parents’ expectations and goals, simultaneous class occurrences, and multi-dimensional classroom situation. Regardless of demerits associated with teaching as a profession, it is one of the most respectable jobs that one would find on the earth surface.

Rationale Essay

Writing about academic expectations.

The discussion of how you’re addressing ESC Area of Study Guidelines and other academic expectations is one of the most important in the rationale essay, as it presents your evidence, backed up by research, to show that your individually-designed degree is academically valid. Above all, think of this section as your logical argument for the validity of your degree choices. Provide enough specific evidence so that your readers (members of an academic review committee) will be convinced that you’ve

• done your research,
• understood your research, and
• addressed Empire State College and overall academic expectations thoughtfully and thoroughly.

As you start writing about academic expectations, make sure to name your area of study and concentration (if you have a degree with a concentration) so that there’s a clear relationship between the focus of your degree and your discussion of ESC guidelines.

Writing about Guidelines

• Name of your area of study and concentration (if you have a degree with a concentration).
• Include a summary or paraphrase, or even a list of the appropriate Empire State College Area of Study guidelines, to show that you understand the college’s general academic expectations for your type of degree.  If you are using a guideline that has both a general discussion of expected skills and knowledge areas, plus a specific discussion of expected skills and knowledge for a specific concentration, you need to include a discussion of both the general and specific guidelines.
• Document by citing the pages.
• Analyze the contents of your own degree/concentration by explaining courses, PLA areas, and/or experience that you have (but did not pursue for PLA) that address the college-level knowledge expectation for each of the main items in the guideline/s.

Business, Management, and Economics

One of the ESC general guidelines for Business, Management, and Economics states this college-level knowledge expectation:

Ethical and social responsibility : demonstration of an understanding of and appreciation for ethical and social issues facing organizations and their environments

You may be planning to pursue credit through prior learning assessment in human resource management, and a good portion of your learning may have been about ethical issues within organizations, so you explain this briefly in this section of your rationale essay.  Or you may plan to address this guideline by taking a course in Business Ethics.  Or you may be doing a business degree focused on information technology, and plan on doing a course in Social and Ethical Issues in IT.  There’s no one way to address this particular guideline; you just need to analyze the knowledge you already have or intend to gain through a course, in order to address this guideline and prove that you have this type of knowledge, in some way.

Community and Human Services

One of the ESC general guidelines for degrees in Community and Human Services states this college-level knowledge expectation:

Knowledge of human behavior:  Students should identify and demonstrate an understanding of human behavior within the context of various social, developmental, global, economic, political, biological and/or environmental systems. These studies should cover theory, historical and developmental perspectives.

For example, studies could include human development, fire-related human behavior, child development, deviant behavior, stress in families, or cognitive psychology.

This guideline provides some ideas for courses or PLA areas; there are others as well, such as Introduction to Psychology, Child Development, and more.  There is no one way to address this guideline.

Cultural Studies

One of the ESC specific concentration guidelines for a concentration in Communications states this college-level knowledge expectation:

History:  a knowledge of the history and associated politics of media institutions/industries in a culture; knowledge of the role of media in culture/society, democracy and the development of digital identity

You may be planning to show that you have some historical knowledge of communications through a course in History and Theory of New Media, The American Cinema, The Decline of Journalism, or any of many other possibilities. Again, there is no one way to address this guideline.

Writing about General Education Requirements

Writing about general education requirements can be quite brief; a paragraph can suffice.  SUNY requires at least 30 credits in 7 of 10 general education areas. (Two required general education areas are math and basic communication; the other 5 are your choice).  Explain the areas you’ve included and give one example of a course that fulfills general education fully for each area.

Writing about Additional Academic Expectations

Did you summarize your research into other colleges (if needed) to show that you understand the general academic expectations for your type of degree?  Have you found through your research that most degrees in your field include a course in X, even though the ESC guidelines do not explicitly state that area?  Include a summary of your research into other colleges, as appropriate, if you needed to look at multiple programs to get a better sense of how to structure your own, and explain how your research translated into coursework for your degree.

Writing about Concentration Design (as appropriate)

In addition to your discussion of guidelines, your writing about academic or educational expectations may explain the overall pattern of your degree. Do you have courses that link with one another and fit into an overall framework? If appropriate, explain how you designed your concentration to move from introductory- to advanced-level studies, to include supportive studies that the guidelines do not mention but that are important to your individual goals, and/or to address the reasons why you designed your concentration in a particular, unique way.  Some degrees do not need full, or any, explanation of concentration design, particularly if they follow a traditional, disciplinary route.  Other degrees, such as degrees in the Interdisciplinary Area of Study, always need explanation of concentration design, because they allow so much flexibility.  Academic review committee members need to understand why these degrees have been designed in certain ways, to include certain courses in certain patterns and sequences.

Answer the following questions to help address degree structure and design in your rationale essay:

• Does learning, especially in your concentration, show progression from introductory to advanced (in a bachelor’s degree concentration)?
• Do you have certain groups of courses that link with each other, for a particular purpose?
• Do you have certain courses that support and/or enhance one another (e.g., do some pieces of the general learning relate to and enhance studies in the concentration)?

What Students Expect from Instructors, Other Students

Some years back The Teaching Professor featured an article highlighting Mano Singham’s wonderful piece describing how he moved away from a very authoritarian, rule-centered syllabus (reference below). It’s one of my very favorite articles—I reference it regularly in presentations, and it appears on almost every bibliography I distribute.

Since its publication in 2005, Singham has continued to explore the role of the syllabus in his courses (and elsewhere) and has become even more convinced that many faculty are using the syllabus in ways that more effectively hinder than promote learning.

In a presentation at an International Society for Exploring Teaching and Learning (ISETL) conference, Singham described an activity he now undertakes on the first day of class. Instead of distributing the syllabus then, he passes out a list of readings, a tentative schedule for the readings and a proposed list of paper due dates. Then he asks students this question: “What do you expect from an instructor who is giving 100% to the course?”

Here’s the list students came up the first time he tried this approach:

• Give students their papers back in a timely way
• Give students lots of criticism and feedback on their work
• Have passion for the material
• Listen and respond to student concerns
• Care not only about academics but also about students as people
• Realize that students have a life outside of class and not make unreasonable demands on them
• Not stick only to the class readings for discussion
• Take all questions seriously and not fake answers
• Provide inspiration to students so that they will want to change their minds

He followed that question with this one: “What would you expect to see your peers doing if they were giving 100% to the course?” And here’s that list:

• Doing the readings
• Listening to others and appreciating diverse opinions
• Learning from each other’s ideas
• Keeping things lighthearted
• Not putting down others if you disagree
• Showing up for every class and being on time
• Showing respect for everyone’s ideas
• Going beyond just academic conversation, bringing personal elements into the discussions too

Singham added three items to the students’ second list: responding thoughtfully to weekly journal prompts; being conscientious about sending weekly private emails to the instructor; and regularly checking the course website for information about the course. The activity confirmed for Singham that students do know what’s expected of them and have a good sense of what professors can do to support their efforts to learn in a course.

What I as a student expect from an English teacher

In this entry, as a business student learning English for global communication, I am writing about what I expect from a ‘good’ English teacher. A good teacher is the one who actually aims to make students understand his/her teaching. I expect good English teacher should be built with different characteristics- i)Proficiency in English ii)Good organization iii)Effective body language iv)Patience v) Knowledge vi) A good sense of humour vii) Good attitude ix) Adaptable to the environment x)Vocabulary knowledge

It’s a genuine fact that an English teacher should have knowledge of English so s/he can teach students with fluency and in right manner. The teacher should also have a good preparation and organization of the materials s/he is presenting in the very time. The detail knowledge on subject matter is very crucial. The vocabulary power assists the teacher to be strong in their lecture or class. The continuous speed up or steady teaching cannot be effective, hence sense of humour play a role for this purpose of holding the class within the control of teacher. Perception of an individual differs according to the attitude of a person. Good attitude can be also an important factor for determining the perfection of teachers. Good attitude leads to positive response from the listeners. The environment is a dynamic factor; therefore teacher should be able to cope within given educational environment whether it suits his/her personality or not. They must  pave a way to develop congenial environment where they are teaching.

In fact, the expectations I put on were fulfilled when I was at graduation level. On remembering my English teacher, today also I felt so warm about her and her teaching. Writing about her teaching is like describing the natural beauty that adds value to the environment. Really I am privileged by this chance on putting words about the personality whom I admire. The smiling face, so poised and elegant nature adds her personality. Her speaking was pellucid; her soft and sweet voice, attracting the attention of whole class; the class which used to be noisy in other’s lecture. Her presence makes the class dear and lovely. Her vocabulary was fabulous and power to make whole class understood is admirable. She had full knowledge on subject matter she was talking on. She was conscious about her words and used to alert timely so students’ attention can be gained. Her encouragement on better writing and good speaking made us careful on our doing. She used to delineate on how to impress the reader by the simple and meaningful writing. I still remember the fact she said – use of difficult or unfamiliar words do not add to clarity and impressiveness of writing; rather writing should be clear, precise and trustworthy to draw the attention of the reader. Her role was remarkable in my life time. She encouraged me in learning English to the extent I need. She used to dictate each and every ideas and information on the topic. She never felt bored and irritated by my questions. In return, her answers used to be reasonable to the questions asked. Today whatever I am able to write freely is the result of her teaching and her inspiration.

As an English teacher it is false to view that a teacher should memorize the whole dictionary or the whole concepts on English but he/she should be an expert in the subject matter, in classroom management and in teaching techniques.

This is such a delightful article to read on this English Language Teaching blogzine. First, it gives us a student’s perspective about a good English language teacher. Of course, this provides us one student’s personal perspective, so we shouldn’t generalize these qualities as universally applicable. When I read it, I was thinking, for instance, that some students may not care so much about “body language” or they may assume “vocabulary knowledge” as a given rather than a quality of good teachers. Second, I like how Manju uses the example of her own teacher to explain, although, again, some of the writer’s “criteria” could be a little unrealistic. For example, I was a little “scared” to think that I may not be so “sweet” with my students (not only because people with less sweet personalities can still be good teachers but also because they or their culture may not see that as the most desirable quality in an effective teacher.) Finally, Maju states at the end that teachers cannot be perfect but they must be their best, suggesting that students will like us if we do our best. What a wonderful piece of writing–one great view of a good English teacher from a student’s perspective!

I wish I had someone could write the reflections on the ways I teach in the classroom. After going through the short and sweet piece of Manju’s writing, I think almost all the teachers (maybe the editor of this issue Bal Krishna Sir and even Shyam Sir who first made the comment) wished the same as I do. Of course, the reflection is what we all those who teach in the classrooms need. It provides an opportunity to see our teaching. If the same is shared through some publication either through journal or blogging (as it has been posted on the blog), it helps us know what a student expects from the teachers. Such a reflection can be used for exploring strength and weak points of the teachers.

What I opine is the characteristics defined by Manju jee in her writing cannot be applicable to the characteristics of all the good teachers since the teaching is affected by the need of the students and the context they have been studying at. The teaching in the US varies in Nepal. Even in Nepal, the good teaching defined by the students of Kathmandu will be quite different from that of Birgunj or elsewhere in Terai. However, this is an interesting as well as important piece of writing for teachers.

Since reflection is one of the strategies of professional development for teachers, it can develop self-awareness and self-consciousness on the part of the teachers and gradually they can improve themselves and help others improve. Therefore, we want more students or student teachers write the reflections and share on the blogs so that we can be able to change ourselves accordingly at desired level.

There is something very magical about her. Maybe, she was the first teacher in my life or maybe, she was very sweet in talking to all of us, I am unable to portray why she is always my favourite. I relied on her blindly.

Unforgettable Memories:

I have some cherished memories with my teacher. Whenever I think of those memories, it makes me blissful. On the last day of my nursery school, I started crying at the very thought of leaving her and having a new teacher. I had fallen sick due to crying for hours together. I skipped my food. My parents were not able to do anything. They called for her to make me feel better. My teacher travelled a few miles across the city and reached the hospital. She, then, said that she would never forget any of her students and asked me to write to her. I started writing to her every week from then on and she replied to every letter of mine. Till date, I look at my teacher as my second mother and she guides me in all my difficult situations.

Conclusion:

Having a good teacher who can share an amalgamated relationship with the students is a boon. A good teacher should be a good mentor, a philosopher, a guide, a friend and above all a surrogate parent to the children. I am lucky that I had gotten one in my lifetime.

My favorite subject is English and my most favorite teacher is Chitra Ma’am. She teaches us English. She likes me a lot and appreciates my hard work. She joined our school one year ago. Before that, I was not so good at English. But after attending her classes, we have all become much better at this subject.

I like her for many reasons. First of all, she teaches the lessons in a very interesting way. Even when we have doubts or questions, she never gets upset with us. Her best quality is her loving nature. She would come to school daily without missing a day.

Her dressing sense is nice. She wears simple salwar suits. She always speaks to her students softly and respectfully. I eagerly wait for her class and do my English homework on time. Chitra Ma’am puts a lot of effort in explaining every chapter.

There are many activities given at the end of every lesson and she makes us participate in all of them. Not only that, but she also encourages us to take part in drama and poem competitions. Since her first day, she made a rule for us.

All of us has to speak in English during the English period. Every student tries to talk in English even if the sentence sounds improper. She has taught us to never laugh at each other’s mistakes. This has improved our spoken English in a great way. Now, we are able to talk in English with more confidence.

Another great quality of hers is that she treats every child equally. After explaining the lesson to us, she asks each one of us different questions about the chapter. Sometimes, we also love to talk about our personal lives, like what do we like about our lives, how our parents work hard for us, and things like that.

When we get confused or need an emotional support, she is the best person to talk to. Her advice and suggestions are always positive. Last month, on teacher’s day, all the students wished her and brought presents for her. We also sang a song to her.

I made a beautiful greeting card for her and a red rose with it. She accepted it with a smile and thanked us for everything. I feel grateful to have such a gentle and great teacher in my life who supports me in every way.

In school, you tend to interact with a lot of people who can either impact your life positively or negatively. A teacher is one neutral person who will manage to strike a balance between the positive and the negative. Teachers have a huge responsibility that we students may not understand. All in all our teachers try their best to provide an education, guidance and discipline despite the challenges we might impose on them. The life of a student is entirely dependent on a teacher because most of their time is spent in school rather than with parents that is why teachers play a major role in shaping the lives of young children through school.

Who Is my favourite Teacher?

I have several teachers now that I am in high school but there is only one whom I can relate to as “the teacher” because of the impact he has made in my life. The teacher is male, of Indian origin and has a funny accent when he speaks. He is married and has three children. Actually, one of his children is my age and I know him through tennis practice because he comes to train with us sometimes. I like him because his sense of humor gives a good learning experience for the students. He is a math teacher and he is very good at what he does. Students tend to make fun of him because of his accent but he make fun of it himself, which gets even funnier. This teacher has been a great mentor to me and other student ever since we joined high school. I met him on a personal level one day after class when I needed clarification on a topic I had not quite understood. The teacher was kind to me and guided me through it. Since then, he took his own initiative to do follow-ups on me and I became really good in math due to his efforts.

Coincidentally, he also coaches my tennis team and we meet out on the field. We have won several awards as a tennis team under him. I feel connected to the teacher through his mentorship and he has become like a school parent to me because whenever I have an issue, he is free to help me out.

How the teacher has impacted my life in school .

Mentorship goes along way depending on the approach used. When I first joined high school, I did not have much confidence in myself. This teacher mentored me and made me believe in myself. The good thing is the attention he gives t is students because most of the times, he follows up on the performances and ensures that he does everything he can to help students improve academically. He has also been a role model to me through his way of doing things. He is dedicated to his work and he is an achiever. Through following his footsteps, I have been able to dedicate myself into studies and sports, which has helped me to achieve my goals.

In conclusion, good teachers are hard to find but when you find one, make the most out of them.

Types of Teachers

Old method teachers: the teachers found under this method adopt the rigid mode of impartation of knowledge. They control the class the way a king would rule over his subjects. Old method teachers are less concerned about the welfare of their learners, they are syllabus-oriented.

New method teachers: the tutors under this model are student-oriented. They are more concerned about their learners and their various levels of understanding. They accept and promote contributions in class unlike the old method teachers. New method teachers encourage the inquisitiveness of their students.

Attributes of a Teacher:

A standard teacher has all or most of the various characters imbedded in them:

• Compassionate
• Open-minded
• A good counselor
• Friendly and most importantly
• Approachable.

Attributes of My Favorite Teacher:

Personally, I see my teacher as a mini-god because he leaves his mark on me. He influences my life in ways that enables me affect changes wherever I find myself.

He is a perfect example of the new model teachers. Basically, he is student-oriented. In the classroom, he employs the Eclectic mode of teaching (this is the combination of all the modes of teaching “discussion mode, play way mode, role play mode, question mode” so as to facilitate standard learning).

He comes into the classroom; starts the lecture with a recap of what was discussed in the previous class, gives room for the students to ask questions that arose from the last class, answers them and then starts a new topic.

To start a new topic, he starts with a mind-capturing introduction that attracts the attention of all students. Once he is through with introducing the topic, he gauges our reaction in order for him to know if his students are on the same page with him or left behind.

Then, he moves on to the discussion mode of teaching, whereby he throws questions to his students and accommodates both relevant and irrelevant answers, at the end of this model, he sieves through the answers provided, pick the relevant ones and add his own iota to it, he also always applaud the courage of all who answers his questions.

He moves either into the role play method or the play way method, here he selects students to either act out the lessons from the day’s topic or summarizes what he has taught for the day. The use of this particular mode enlightens the students more on the topic being discussed.

Finally, he moves over to the questions and revision mode, where he personally go through all he has taught over the course of the period. During this mode, he entertains questions from students on their personal areas of difficulties. Occasionally, he gives assignments to back up his teachings.

During his teachings, he pays close attention to the expression, mood, sitting posture and carriage of his students. This tells him when his students are lost, sad, worried, hungry, sick, away in dream land or simply tired.

Once he is done processing the information gotten from our faces, he either finds a way of brightening the mood of his students, bringing them back from the dream world, or ending his class without breaking his stride or alerting the whole population of students to what is currently going on.

It is only normal for a human being to reflect his mood whenever he is talking or interacting, but my teacher hardly ever allow his bad, horrible moods interfere with his teachings.

Outside the classroom, my teacher is approachable, fatherly, and jovial. He entertains all and no one is excluded from his open arms, smiles and affections.

He is a good counselor who is always ready to help me out of my tight corners. He gives twenty first century advises in a fatherly way.

Although, due to my teachers lenient ways with students, some students tend to be lazy, disrespectful, stubborn or rude. He has a way of being firm, maintaining class control while teaching.

In conclusion, my teacher has all the attributes and more of a new method teachers. He is capable of combining all modes of teaching, he is compassionate, passionate, and friendly. From my interactions with him, I can confidently say that he is one of the best teachers around.

Ms Kirti was my class educator as well and took participation in the daily activities with us as well. She was a strict instructor anyway extremely amusing and mind in nature. At the same time, she was extremely restrained and dependable. She did her work perfectly with the class at a perfect time without getting late. I liked her, particularly as she attempted simple approaches to show us beneficial things. We made the most of her class. She taught us English subject as well. She even made us giggle by telling heaps of jokes in the middle of when she taught. I am a student of 10th Class of a reputed private school. There are many great teachers in my school but everyone has that one teacher they are especially grateful to. Likewise, my favourite teacher is Mr Manish Khandelwal Sir. Manish Sir teaches us Maths, and he has a really attractive personality. He is very polite and humble and we all the students love him. He is also a person trusted the most by parents and teachers, as he constantly strives in creating a balanced environment in working hard at academics and having fun doing so.

Qualities of My Favorite Teacher

Manish Sir is tall and quite good looking. He is 32 years old and very experienced. His way of teaching is excellent. He believes in simple living and high thinking. All the students love him for his superb way of teaching and humble behaviour. He has an experience of 9 years in education, and he has done masters in Mathematics. He easily solves complicated mathematical equations. 

He has a unique way of explaining his methods of solving problems. This way, he makes even the most complex of problems look simple and makes it very easy to understand for all students. He has all favourite teacher qualities in him, and has an exceptional amount of patience, which is one of the reasons why everyone considers him as the best teacher. He explains every question or doubt with so much patience and clarity and makes sure you understand them thoroughly. 

He has an excellent command of English and unlike most teachers out there for whom writing impositions, formulas and theorems are important,  he focuses more on logical reasoning rather than memorising complicated equations. He is very disciplined and punctual and ensures that we follow these principles as well. He understands the importance of time and always comes on time. He possesses many of such appreciable qualities which are commendable and highly appreciated by students who want to pursue these qualities as well. 

He is very enthusiastic but he is not too pushy and allows us to make the decisions on our own. He perfectly understands the balance between study and extracurricular activities and helps us stay on track with both. He believes in the overall development of the students and thus encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities. 

He prepares students for Maths olympiads so that their confidence can be boosted and they excel in a complex subject like Maths. Under his guidance, many students have won prizes in Maths olympiads, and even I have scored the highest marks securing the first position in many Maths competitions. He is an asset to our school as he has played a massive role in improving the overall image of our school including co-curricular and academic aspects and we students are fortunate to have him.

What Makes Him My Favourite Teacher?

Manish Sir is my favourite teacher because he is very humble, kind and polite. I love his way of teaching. He loves all students and doesn't believe in punishing them. He focuses more on conceptual clarity than burdening students with excessive homeworks. He never scolds students and never expresses his concerns in the form of anger. Instead, he talks to the students personally in a calm manner, in a way that helps us improve and wants to put in more effort. 

He asks students to be honest with him and always gives equal attention to all the students. He never makes fun of any students and gives extra attention to the weak students. Whenever a student fails to understand any question or equation, he puts extra effort to make him understand, and never tends to lose patience. He calmly explains no matter how many times he has to repeat the same question or statement. He is focused on making us understand every concept with utmost clarity and that is the reason why all students love him.

One of my most favourite qualities of Manish sir is that he keeps track of every student in the class; how they are performing or what are the things they are good at. He constantly keeps an eye out for everyone in the class and helps them to improve themselves and guides them throughout the learning process. He is one of the best teachers in our school who keeps constantly motivating their students and  guiding them in all spheres of life. Manish sir is especially known for not showing even the tiniest amount of favouritism. He treats all his students with an equal amount of fondness and love and cares for every one of us deeply.

He is very experienced and full of life. He tends to keep the entire class on a positive note and never exhibits any behaviour that deteriorates other people. He is concerned about people’s feelings and never hurts anybody. He is very sober and has a great sense of humour. His mathematical knowledge is very vast. Apart from being good at mathematics, he also preaches the importance of having sound knowledge in English and literature. 

He loves reading books and always encourages students to spare some time to read novels instead of doing mindless activities like watching tv or playing video games. He also advises us to get more physical activity and play with other people our age and interact more as it would improve communication. He advises students to pursue their hobbies or interests. He understands students' problems and always provides them with a helping hand. He explains everything with examples and makes every concept so interesting to learn for students. 

We students love to attend his class because he is very understanding. He covers each topic in detail and gives his full attention in class. He would be the first one to notice if even a single student loses track or starts dozing off. He would just suggest an alternative method or a simpler explanation instead of blaming the student for not paying enough attention to the class. He knows how to draw students' attention in class. He never assigns us too much homework, and after class, he provides us with regular assignments to assess our understanding of a particular topic. 

The assignments are often designed to be more informative and research-oriented rather than just making us write down questions or paragraphs from the book and memorise them. By actually going through related articles and books, we gain a greater amount of knowledge and this way, we tend to remember what we learn for a long time as well.  

In case if any student fails to do the assignment or performs poorly in a particular chapter, he doesn't shout at them but instead makes them understand the concept again. This way, we students understand that whatever he is doing is for our own benefit and we tend to work harder to improve ourselves. These are a few of the things he does that makes him different from the other teachers and appears approachable to everyone around him. I have never seen a humble and polite teacher like him, and one day I will try to be like him in my career.

Manish Sir is not just a great teacher but also my ideal person. He has all the favourite teacher qualities, and everyone loves him. I am lucky to be his student, and I will always follow his principles in my life. Even after leaving this school, he will remain my favourite teacher, and I will never forget him. I will always remember what he has taught me through example, and I will try to be a great person like him in the future.

Because all teachers are good and always wish good for their students, nobody thinks that their student fails in life or does not succeed. Everyone wants you to achieve success in life and become a good person in society. The teacher introduces you to the ups and downs of life makes you capable of thinking and understanding the difference between good and bad, right and wrong. He teaches a lot of subjects in your syllabus, teaches you to make yourself fit by doing exercises, and awards you with life’s most important thing to become a good human being and raise your name in society. 

A good teacher can be a good mentor, a good philosopher, a guide, a friend to the student. A teacher is an intelligent and well-educated person who then teaches and helps their students learn new life lessons. They take care of their students like their family or kids, giving them proper education and good manners. Teachers teach us different languages related to our syllabus and the international language, English Language. Some of the students choose their favorite teachers from their favorite subjects. Some of the students choose their favorite teacher because of their behavior and thoughts related to life’s reality. Having a teacher is like having a precious gem in your life.

Why expecting less makes us happier..

My first year as a teacher was rough. It sometimes felt like I was thrown out of a plane without a parachute. I would walk into class thinking my high school students would love the lesson plan I spent all night designing, rethinking, and then anxiously redesigning. Then I would leave class devastated when it fell flat.

I learned a lot during this trial-by-fire time, but then one day I stumbled upon a mantra that helped me be more in the moment and responsive at work. I walked into the teachers’ lounge and slumped down with a singsongy “Lower your expectations!” My coworkers found it hilarious, and it became a unifying motto for me and my colleagues.

Someone’s getting worked up about an upcoming meeting? Lower your expectations. Planning an in-class essay assignment? Lower your expectations. Walking into the office to see if the copying machine is working? Lower your expectations!

The Science of Low Expectations

It turns out, there’s research that backs up the usefulness of lowering our expectations. Participants in one study had to make decisions that either led to financial gains or losses, all while inside a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine. Researchers then duplicated this experiment as an app to crowdsource more data.

The takeaway was that it didn’t matter how much participants won; what mattered were their expectations. As the lead researcher of the study Dr. Rutledge explains, “Lower expectations make it more likely that an outcome will exceed those expectations and have a positive impact on happiness .”

And doesn’t that just say it all? We often expect too much. Of ourselves. Of other people. Of all of it.

Expectations are like pre-scripting an interaction or experience. In improv terms, it’s playing the end of the scene.

If I’m expecting my lesson to go well or my husband to laugh uproariously at my joke or my kids to react this way or that, I’m focused on what could be. That means I’m not focused on what is.

The antidote to expectations?

Be curious about how the other person is actually reacting. But also, be curious about yourself when your expectations creep back up.

If you’re experiencing high expectations and the corresponding high disappointment, try this:

Clear Your Mind

During one improv workshop, Keith Johnstone told me to clear my mind and start again. Somehow he knew I was pre-scripting my scene. Before I even said a word.

Try this in your own life. If you find yourself expecting the moon, clear your mind and start again.

Shift Your Focus

Another strategy for managing bloated expectations is to stop thinking about your expectations and start focusing on what’s really going on.

If I’m expecting my class to go swimmingly, I can catch myself and then put all my energy into circulating the room to see how everything is actually going for each of my students. I can ask questions and listen intently. This consumes all my available brain space (it feels like there’s less and less of that the older I get), leaving no room to ruminate on what could be.

If you expect miracles and magic, try shifting your attention to the here and now. Ask questions. Get curious. Stay open.

I often find that when I shift away from pre-scripting and toward being in the moment, everyone has a much better experience.

Sing It Away

And if all this fails, just sing a little sing-songy tune: “Lower your expectations.”

What Teachers Really Want for Teacher Appreciation Week

It’s that time of year again for social media posts, emails, and gifts thanking teachers for their hard work —and legions of teachers who still report feeling unappreciated. For years, writers have taken to Education Week’s opinion pages to mark the week with both heartfelt thanks and searching reflections on how to make that appreciation last far longer than five days.

In 2021, teachers of the year from seven states came together to write “ It’s Teacher Appreciation Week. Flowers? Mugs? We’re Looking for Something More ,” expressing their hopes for appreciative gestures that won’t wilt by the end of the week.

Their No. 1 ask? “Include teachers in education decisions.”

Another former state teacher of the year came to a similar conclusion several years earlier, when 2014 Texas Teacher of the Year Monica Washington argued that messages of appreciation ring hollow when they aren’t accompanied by a seat at the decisionmaking table: “We are often told that we are ‘valued professionals’ who ‘change the lives of our students every day.’ But we are also micromanaged to immobility, not trusted to make the simplest decisions that affect students’ learning and well-being.”

Sharif El-Mekki has taken on a principal eye view of this conundrum in several recent essays. “What if we made Teacher Appreciation Week last all year?” he asked school leaders last spring , before laying out five actionable recommendations.

Several months later, the former principal kept the theme of teacher appreciation alive into the fall by offering “ The 4 Gifts Principals Should Give Teachers This Year (Hint: Not Another School Mug) .”

That’s not the only call to action opinion writers had for principals. Explaining her own approach in “ Why One Principal Is Asking Her Staff to Do Less ,” Indiana Principal Crystal Thorpe dialed in on the ABCs of school—academics, behavior, and culture—to slow down the runaway snowball of demands on teachers.

Part of appreciating teachers starts with respecting their profession as more than just a steppingstone to administration or some other career changes. That’s the message of “ Why I’m Happy Being ‘Just a Teacher,’ ” in which Amanda Myers works through her response to a recent dinner party guest who pushed for answers on her “next step” after teaching. The widespread assumption that every teacher is an administrator-in-waiting undermines the valuable types of leadership that teachers bring to the job they already have, she writes.

Gratitude doesn’t just come from outside the profession: Teachers are ready to appreciate each other as well. Just look at what these teachers and student-teachers had to say about the educators who inspired them:

Those words of affirmation are just in line with instructional coach Lisa Westman’s prescriptions in the 2017 opinion essay “ Teachers, Do We Appreciate One Another? ” To help her fellow educators join the mutual-appreciation party, Westman translates the popular love languages—gift giving, words of affirmation, quality time, acts of service, and physical connection—into work-appropriate gestures to make colleagues feel valued.

“Teachers most frequently say they feel unappreciated by society and administration,” she wrote. “And it is easy to look outward at factors we cannot control, we can’t make society appreciate us. But, when we look inward, we must ask, what part do we, teachers, play in creating a culture of appreciation?”

A decade into retirement, former English teacher Laurie Barnoski was still feeling the appreciation when she sat down to write a love letter to teaching back in 2018. After reconnecting with four former students—two of whom had gone on to become English teachers themselves—she was reminded of the long-tail influence of her job.

“By taking time to say thank you,” she wrote, “my students were telling me that my 32 years in the classroom meant something; my goal to have a positive impact on my students was complete. They gave me the greatest gift human beings can give one another: They told me that I mattered.”
