Why my dad is my inspiration, thank you for everything..

Why My Dad Is My Inspiration

It's true that I am a mommy's girl at heart. I tell her everything about my life, about what's going on throughout my day and anything in between. Since I've gone to college, though, I've found myself creating a new relationship with my dad, one that I wish I would have begun long, long ago.

My dad has done everything for me. He drove me and my brother to school every single day from the first day of Pre-K to the day I was able to drive to school. He went to see every musical I was in, cheered me on at (almost) every sports game I've played and has supported me in every decision I've made. My dad was the one who taught me how to ride a bike and how to drive. He was the one who watched every Disney channel show and movie with me time and time again (he knows every line to most of these shows and movies, too). He was the one who took me on walks around the neighborhood when I was little. He was the one I played catch with in our yard and sledded with when it snowed.

As I grew older, I found my father to be more of annoyance than anything else, and I hardly ever had conversations with him that lasted more than a few minutes or spanned beyond the questions of, "How are you doing today?" or, "How was your day at school?"

Now, years later, the separation from him has shown me just how much I appreciate him and how much I love him. My dad and I are the same person; we think the same way, we agree on the same things and we understand each other more than anybody else. My dad has provided me with advice and life lessons that I will carry with me until the day I die. After years of a sub-par relationship, my dad has selflessly forgiven me and my bratty teenage behavior years ago and accepted me for who I am today.

After many long talks with my father that have, at times, lasted hours, I have found that not only are we very similar, but he is someone who I aspire to be more like each and every day. He is at peace with himself and who he is, he has overcome more than his fair share of obstacles over his life, and most importantly, he is selfless and cares for each person who he comes into contact with. These are only a few of the traits that I wish I could acquire from him.

Looking back at how much I took my father for granted, I truly wish I could go back and change my behavior toward him when I was younger. As I grow older and wiser, I have come to appreciate the growing relationship I have made with my dad. He inspires me to be a better person and to accept people for who they are. He reminds me to put myself first, and to learn to love myself.

So this is a thank you, Dad, for everything. I love you.

25 beatles lyrics: your go-to guide for every situation, the best lines from the fab four.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Can't Buy Me Love- A Hard Day's Night, 1964

All you need is love, love is all you need

All You Need Is Love- Magical Mystery Tour, 1967

Though I know I'll never lose affection, for people and things that went before. I know I'll often stop and think about them. In my life, I love you more

In My Life- Rubber Soul, 1965

While these are my 25 favorites, there are quite literally 1000s that could have been included. The Beatles' body of work is massive and there is something for everyone. If you have been living under a rock and haven't discovered the Fab Four, you have to get musically educated. Stream them on Spotify, find them on iTunes or even buy a CD or record (Yes, those still exist!). I would suggest starting with 1, which is a collection of most of their #1 songs, or the 1968 White Album. Give them chance and you'll never look back.

14 Invisible Activities: Unleash Your Inner Ghost!

Obviously the best superpower..

The best superpower ever? Being invisible of course. Imagine just being able to go from seen to unseen on a dime. Who wouldn't want to have the opportunity to be invisible? Superman and Batman have nothing on being invisible with their superhero abilities. Here are some things that you could do while being invisible, because being invisible can benefit your social life too.

1. "Haunt" your friends.

Follow them into their house and cause a ruckus.

2. Sneak into movie theaters.

Going to the cinema alone is good for your mental health , says science

Considering that the monthly cost of subscribing to a media-streaming service like Netflix is oft...

Free movies...what else to I have to say?

3. Sneak into the pantry and grab a snack without judgment.

Late night snacks all you want? Duh.

4. Reenact "Hollow Man" and play Kevin Bacon.

America's favorite son? And feel what it's like to be in a MTV Movie Award nominated film? Sign me up.

5. Wear a mask and pretend to be a floating head.

Just another way to spook your friends in case you wanted to.

6. Hold objects so they'll "float."

"Oh no! A floating jar of peanut butter."

7. Win every game of hide-and-seek.

Just stand out in the open and you'll win.

8. Eat some food as people will watch it disappear.

Even everyday activities can be funny.

9. Go around pantsing your friends.

Even pranks can be done; not everything can be good.

10. Not have perfect attendance.

You'll say here, but they won't see you...

11. Avoid anyone you don't want to see.

Whether it's an ex or someone you hate, just use your invisibility to slip out of the situation.

12. Avoid responsibilities.

Chores? Invisible. People asking about social life? Invisible. Family being rude? Boom, invisible.

13. Be an expert on ding-dong-ditch.

Never get caught and have the adrenaline rush? I'm down.

14. Brag about being invisible.

Be the envy of the town.

But don't, I repeat, don't go in a locker room. Don't be a pervert with your power. No one likes a Peeping Tom.

Good luck, folks.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned..

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

1. The importance of traditions.

Sometimes traditions seem like a silly thing, but the fact of it is that it's part of who you are. You grew up this way and, more than likely, so did your parents. It is something that is part of your family history and that is more important than anything.

2. How to be thankful for family and friends.

No matter how many times they get on your nerves or make you mad, they are the ones who will always be there and you should never take that for granted.

3. How to give back.

When tragedy strikes in a small town, everyone feels obligated to help out because, whether directly or indirectly, it affects you too. It is easy in a bigger city to be able to disconnect from certain problems. But in a small town those problems affect everyone.

4. What the word "community" really means.

Along the same lines as #3, everyone is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand when you need one in a small town and to me that is the true meaning of community. It's working together to build a better atmosphere, being there to raise each other up, build each other up, and pick each other up when someone is in need. A small town community is full of endless support whether it be after a tragedy or at a hometown sports game. Everyone shows up to show their support.

5. That it isn't about the destination, but the journey.

People say this to others all the time, but it takes on a whole new meaning in a small town. It is true that life is about the journey, but when you're from a small town, you know it's about the journey because the journey probably takes longer than you spend at the destination. Everything is so far away that it is totally normal to spend a couple hours in the car on your way to some form of entertainment. And most of the time, you're gonna have as many, if not more, memories and laughs on the journey than at the destination.

6. The consequences of making bad choices.

Word travels fast in a small town, so don't think you're gonna get away with anything. In fact, your parents probably know what you did before you even have a chance to get home and tell them. And forget about being scared of what your teacher, principle, or other authority figure is going to do, you're more afraid of what your parents are gonna do when you get home.

7. To trust people, until you have a reason not to.

Everyone deserves a chance. Most people don't have ill-intentions and you can't live your life guarding against every one else just because a few people in your life have betrayed your trust.

8. To be welcoming and accepting of everyone.

While small towns are not always extremely diverse, they do contain people with a lot of different stories, struggle, and backgrounds. In a small town, it is pretty hard to exclude anyone because of who they are or what they come from because there aren't many people to choose from. A small town teaches you that just because someone isn't the same as you, doesn't mean you can't be great friends.

9. How to be my own, individual person.

In a small town, you learn that it's okay to be who you are and do your own thing. You learn that confidence isn't how beautiful you are or how much money you have, it's who you are on the inside.

10. How to work for what I want.

Nothing comes easy in life. They always say "gardens don't grow overnight" and if you're from a small town you know this both figuratively and literally. You certainly know gardens don't grow overnight because you've worked in a garden or two. But you also know that to get to the place you want to be in life it takes work and effort. It doesn't just happen because you want it to.

11. How to be great at giving directions.

If you're from a small town, you know that you will probably only meet a handful of people in your life who ACTUALLY know where your town is. And forget about the people who accidentally enter into your town because of google maps. You've gotten really good at giving them directions right back to the interstate.

12. How to be humble .

My small town has definitely taught me how to be humble. It isn't always about you, and anyone who grows up in a small town knows that. Everyone gets their moment in the spotlight, and since there's so few of us, we're probably best friends with everyone so we are as excited when they get their moment of fame as we are when we get ours.

13. To be well-rounded.

Going to a small town high school definitely made me well-rounded. There isn't enough kids in the school to fill up all the clubs and sports teams individually so be ready to be a part of them all.

14. How to be great at conflict resolution.

In a small town, good luck holding a grudge. In a bigger city you can just avoid a person you don't like or who you've had problems with. But not in a small town. You better resolve the issue fast because you're bound to see them at least 5 times a week.

15. The beauty of getting outside and exploring.

One of my favorite things about growing up in a rural area was being able to go outside and go exploring and not have to worry about being in danger. There is nothing more exciting then finding a new place somewhere in town or in the woods and just spending time there enjoying the natural beauty around you.

16. To be prepared for anything.

You never know what may happen. If you get a flat tire, you better know how to change it yourself because you never know if you will be able to get ahold of someone else to come fix it. Mechanics might be too busy , or more than likely you won't even have enough cell service to call one.

17. That you don't always have to do it alone.

It's okay to ask for help. One thing I realized when I moved away from my town for college, was how much my town has taught me that I could ask for help is I needed it. I got into a couple situations outside of my town where I couldn't find anyone to help me and found myself thinking, if I was in my town there would be tons of people ready to help me. And even though I couldn't find anyone to help, you better believe I wasn't afraid to ask.

18. How to be creative.

When you're at least an hour away from normal forms of entertainment such as movie theaters and malls, you learn to get real creative in entertaining yourself. Whether it be a night looking at the stars in the bed of a pickup truck or having a movie marathon in a blanket fort at home, you know how to make your own good time.

19. To brush off gossip.

It's all about knowing the person you are and not letting others influence your opinion of yourself. In small towns, there is plenty of gossip. But as long as you know who you really are, it will always blow over.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

Right from the word go, he has been my inspiration. A man with immense wisdom and advise, my father has made me what I am to day. He is the linchpin of my success in my life.

My father is a very hard-working person and one who values education in one’s life. Being a teacher by profession, I was really touched with the way he used to concentrate all his efforts in making his students pass. This also made me to follow his footsteps by working extremely hard in school. He also encouraged and advised me to work even harder, telling me that the sky was the limit. Today, I am convinced that with the course am pursuing, I would get a very good job out of it.

My father is a person with a lot of respect for both his elders and younger ones .All along my entire lifetime, I have seen the sober manner in which he settles domestic scores and reprimanded us when we erred. In both cases, consultations and dialogue were the key traits that guided him. This has taught me the importance of tolerating other people’s injustices and seeking for consultations in times of difficulties. As a consequence, I have been able to live harmoniously with both friends and foes.

My moral decorum and uprightness is all owed to my father. He always warned me against engaging in immoral activities chief among them being sex before marriage. I can comfortably acknowledge that am very far from the dangers of HIV/Aids and other sexually related diseases because of the inspiration I got from my father.

Being a humble and down-to-earth person, my father ensured that we were like him. I leant the need of swallowing one’s pride whenever success knocks the door. Instead, forgetting the past success and working even harder isthe motto.

The word Love sounds little but few people understand what it really means to love. It is a trait that cannot easily be self cultivated in an individual person. It can only be shown in a person and the person would also show it onto others in return. It is a trait that my father had and still possesses. It has enabled me to extend my love to all who associate with me in one way or another.

I believe in doing things early and fast in life. This is something that I learnt from my father. I remember his most favorite saying that, and I quote; “the early bird catches the warm”   Then the question is; how has this saying helped me to be what I am and where I am? Because of the enthusiasm to accomplish things/works early in life, I was able to finish finish both my A-Level and O- level education at the most appropriate times.

It is my father who cultivated in me the culture of disliking drug abuse and consumption of alcohol. As he never used to take alcohol nor smoke, is how I grew. At times, one is faced in difficult problems in life. These are mostly social-financial in nature. My father was never an optimist in life. He thinks positively and does not believe in defeat. This influenced my optimistic approach towards issues, tasks and other difficult life situations.

I cannot forget how he trained me to be a God fearing man. This feature was inculcated right from my childhood through constant worshipping and moral teachings. Being God fearing has influenced my relationship with people. It has also influenced the pragmatic ways at which I tackle real life situations.

Indeed, I can say that it is my father has  made me what I am today.

Becoming Fluent in Spanish Was a Reclamation of My Identity

my dad my inspiration essay

"No sabo" is an incorrect way of saying "I don't know" in Spanish. It's also become an increasingly popular term that's used to describe Latine folks who aren't fluent in Spanish. And while the term might be a humorous play on the trickiness of conjugating irregular verbs like "saber," the shame that often accompanies not being able to speak the language of your parents is anything but a joke. I should know. For many years, I was a "no sabo" kid. And I hated it.

As a second-generation Nuyorican, I grew up surrounded by Spanish. My mother worked a lot, and that meant my sister and I spent the majority of our time with our grandmother. She'd speak to us in fluent Spanish, but we developed the habit of answering back in English. It was partially because we didn't know the proper conjugations of the words, but also because we were discouraged from trying by the way our elders responded to our attempts.

You see, very early on, we learned that if we made mistakes in our pronunciation or in our conjugation, we were made fun of. For an adult, a little cajoling might not seem like a big deal; but as a child, it filled me with so much shame and embarrassment that I simply refused to try to speak Spanish.

My father actually went through a similar experience, not with my grandparents, but with our relatives in Puerto Rico. He grew up speaking Spanish as a kid, but my father never developed the fluency he would have liked. For many of us second- and third-generation Latines, this is an uncomfortable reality. We might feel a strong connection to our ancestral cultures and homelands, but lack the ability to truly embrace our identities fully. This is especially true of Puerto Ricans.

The French King Charlamagne famously said, "To have a second language is to possess a second soul." However, not knowing Spanish as a kid felt like I was cut off from a piece of my soul. I'd listen with envy as my Dominican and Ecuadorian friends seamlessly switched back and forth between English and Spanish, and I'd feel like an impostor. I'd listen to reggaetĂłn and salsa and feel ashamed that other Caribbeans seemed to understand my own cultural touchstones better than I did.

At some point, I started wondering: when did it become a thing that Puerto Ricans born in New York couldn't speak Spanish? At what point did we begin to raise our children to speak English as their first and only language? As with most aspects of the Puerto Rican identity, the answer is wrapped up in a history of colonization and immigration.

While Boricuas had been coming to the states in small numbers for decades prior, it wasn't until after 1945 that a large wave of Puerto Ricans migrated to the US to escape the island's agricultural crisis . When they arrived, they were met with xenophobia and the pressure to assimilate to American culture. And part of that assimilation meant giving up their language. The first wave of Latines to migrate to the states was mostly made up of Puerto Ricans and Mexicans who discovered that speaking Spanish in public painted a target on their backs, marking them as "other" and making it easy for them to be discriminated against. The trauma from these experiences was then passed down to their children, who were forbidden from speaking their cultural language or taught to prioritize English to avoid being ostracized.

We've even seen a resurgence in this kind of discrimination during the Trump years. In light of these incidents, speaking Spanish is akin to an act of resistance against oppression. For me, however, reclaiming my native language was less about fighting against oppression and more about becoming whole.

Ever since I was a kid, both my parents cultivated within me a love and appreciation for our island. Unlike other Nuyoricans I knew, I made pilgrimages back to the island every summer. But my lack of Spanish haunted me and kept me from experiencing the island the way I truly wanted to. My father and I would drive around searching for local spots, asking for directions only to be called "los Americanos" by locals. People would start conversations with me in Spanish and then, half-way through, switch to English for "my benefit." All these instances stayed with me for years, only exacerbating the shame I felt. But I was determined.

I kept trying to speak my language, forcing my way through conversations. My jobs helped, always surrounding me with Latines who seemed eager to help me learn. But I also went back to school and took up a second major in Spanish. When the opportunity came to take an intensive course and live in Spain for a month, I jumped at it. And then finally, the big step: I moved to Puerto Rico. For three years, I lived there, engaging with the locals, living like a local, and only speaking to folks in Spanish. My accent changed. My vocab improved. Finally, I could speak with confidence. And no, I didn't know every word. Yes, there were still gaps in my knowledge. But the more I spoke it, the more those gaps filled in and became less. The more I felt whole.

I realized, too, that I didn't always have the right words in English, so why did I force myself to achieve perfection in Spanish? I gave myself grace to fail, but never to quit. And slowly over the years, I finally reclaimed a piece of my identity that had been taken from me by societal barriers beyond my control. So, to all the "no sabo" kids out there, just know, there's still hope.

2-minute Speech on My Father

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I stand before you today to speak about a person who holds an indispensable place in my life, my father. He is a man of few words but abundant actions. An embodiment of love, courage, perseverance, and integrity, my father is my biggest inspiration. His life and his principles serve as a guiding light that helps me navigate through my own life.

In terms of education, my father has always encouraged us to aim higher. He never put any pressure on us to get straight A’s, but he always insisted on the importance of learning. For him, education is not only about scoring high grades but also about understanding the world around us and developing a perspective. This lesson from him has made me realize the true essence of knowledge and learning.

My father is also a living embodiment of perseverance. He faced numerous hardships in his life but never backed down. His never-give-up attitude has always inspired me to stay strong during tough times. He taught me that life is not always a bed of roses, and it is the thorns that make us stronger and wiser. His courage in dealing with life’s ups and downs has taught me to face life with grit and determination.

Moreover, he is a man of great integrity. He stands by his commitments and never compromises on his values. His honesty and uprightness are traits that I deeply admire and strive to emulate in my own life. He often says, “Integrity is what makes a man,” and I see this reflected in every facet of his life.

Nevertheless, what I admire most about my father is his unconditional love for us. He is always there for us, ready to make any sacrifice for our happiness. His love is not measured in the gifts he gives or the time he spends with us but in his constant concern, care and the sacrifices he makes for us.

The Emotion I Didn’t Expect as a New Parent: Regret

Three colored drawings of an adult’s hands holding an infant in their lap.

By Miguel Macias

A journalist, audio producer and public radio reporter based in Spain.

This essay is part of How to Live With Regret, a series exploring the nature of regret and the role it plays in all our lives. Read more about this project here .

When friends ask me how I’m feeling 18 months after my daughter was born, I usually tell them that it has been wonderful. Sometimes, though, if I’m feeling particularly confessional, I will smile coyly and say: “Well, this is not the life I wanted. But the life I had before was not the life I wanted, either.” I say it in a cheeky, half-joking way, hoping the gravity of the comment will go unnoticed. But it’s not a joke.

Since my daughter, Olivia, was born, I have cycled through a huge range of emotions. I expect many of them would be familiar to any parent: joy, exhaustion, deep love, confusion, wonder, exasperation, happiness, sadness. But there is another, quieter, emotion that comes up every now and then. It’s a feeling that’s so difficult to talk about, so universally taboo, that I feel nervous expressing it even to the people closest to me: regret.

Since I was a teenager, I knew that I did not want to have kids. I did not budge for decades, and I had quite the battery of reasons for feeling this way, from the emotional to the practical — the biggest one being that there were simply too many things I wanted to accomplish in life, and a baby would surely get in the way.

When I was young I dreamed of becoming a famous filmmaker, traveling the world making documentaries. It hardly seemed like a good way to raise a kid. But I also just never had any interest in babies or kids. Rather, I felt resolved, ironclad in my conviction that I would never be a father.

But things change. I settled down. And at 47, my life didn’t look like the one I had once envisioned for myself. To be clear, I have a lot to be proud of. I do work that I care about as a radio producer and reporter, and I’ve been fairly successful. But I didn’t set the world on fire. I am not traveling the globe chasing major stories and winning Oscars. And over time the reasons I’d held onto for why I did not want to have children slowly faded.
