Theses and Dissertations
Defense and submission.
Below is an overview of the main steps in preparing, defending, and submitting your thesis or dissertation. For detailed instructions on each step, see The Graduate School's Guide for Electronic Submission of Thesis and Dissertation (PDF) , in addition to this video recording from a workshop given on the subject.
- Schedule your defense and apply for graduation in DukeHub ( defense and graduation deadlines ).
- At least 30 days before your defense: Confirm or update your defense committee.
- Give your thesis/dissertation to your advisor for inspection, and prompt your advisor to send a letter to [email protected] stating that it is complete and ready to defend. Note: For students in School of Medicine Ph.D. programs, their advisor letters are generated through T3.
- Request your DGSA to send a departmental defense announcement to [email protected] . Note: For students in School of Medicine Ph.D. programs, their departmental defense announcements are generated through T3.
- At least 2 weeks before your defense: Submit your complete, correctly formatted dissertation/thesis to ProQuest (initial submission). Also provide it to each member of your committee.
- Optional: After you receive an email through ProQuest from the Graduate School administrator who reviewed your thesis/dissertation format, you may make an appointment for a brief, virtual meeting with the administrator to discuss any questions you have about the defense process or the recommended formatting revisions.
- A few days before your defense, The Graduate School will generate your final examination certificate and email it to the chair/co-chair(s) of your examination committee and the DGSA of your department. Note: For students in School of Medicine Ph.D. programs, their final examination certificates are generated and released through T3.
- Defend your dissertation. After your final examination, your committee members will vote on whether you passed or failed. Your chair and DGS will record the votes on your final examination certificate, sign it, and submit it to The Graduate School. Your committee may vote that you passed but still require minor edits or corrections before final submission.
- As soon as possible after your defense, submit to [email protected] the Non-Exclusive Distribution License and Thesis/Dissertation Availability Agreement (“embargo agreement”) signed by yourself and your thesis/dissertation advisor.
- Within 30 days after your successful defense, or by the established final submission deadline (whichever is first): Submit the final version of your dissertation/thesis to ProQuest.
Guide for Electronic Submission of Thesis and Dissertation (PDF)

However, all submitted theses and dissertations must meet the specifications listed in the ETD guide . The manuscript must be a completed document, formatted correctly, with no sections left blank.
- Word Template for Thesis/Dissertation (Word)
- LaTeX Template for Thesis/Dissertation (ZIP)
Notes about the LaTeX Template
- This LaTeX template is for both master's and Ph.D. students. Master's theses must also have an abstract title page.
- Neither The Graduate School nor OIT supports LaTeX beyond providing this template.
Ph.D. and master’s students are required to apply for graduation in DukeHub by the established application deadline for the semester in which they plan to graduate.

Pathways to Graduation
Have questions about graduation? Not sure where to begin? The Office of Graduate Education has developed Pathways to Graduation , a self-guided Canvas course which helps to equip graduate students with the tools to succeed and experience a smooth, stress-free road to graduation.
Many policies related to this process are listed in Georgia Tech’s Policy Library. For international students, there are Office of International Education policies on enrollment and optional practical training that you’ll want to become familiar with.
Graduate Thesis Faculty Submission Form
Effective for the summer 2023 term, the policy on advisement of graduate students has been updated in the Catalog . Tenure-track faculty are members of the Graduate Thesis Faculty by default. All other Georgia Tech faculty must be approved by the program and submitted to the Office of Graduate Education. Departments must submit those names, once approved, via our submission form below.
Electronic Submission and Disseminating Your Work
Tech requires all theses and dissertations to be submitted electronically. Once it is approved by your committee, here’s what happens next:
- Visit the Electronic Thesis and Dissertations (ETD) Submission System . Please follow the instructions, and upload your approved thesis or dissertation as a PDF.
- Graduate Education will check your uploaded PDF and will notify you if there are any corrections. You must make the corrections, and resubmit the corrected file.
- If Graduate Education has all the required pre-thesis and thesis-related (or dissertation) documents, we will approve your thesis/dissertation and notify the Office of the Registrar that you are eligible to graduate.
- You and your committee members will receive an approval notice via Vireo/ETD. Approximately a month after you graduate, your thesis/dissertation will be released for electronic circulation.
- You can request that your thesis/dissertation be withheld from release for one year for intellectual property reasons. The Graduate Thesis Office ( [email protected] ) must receive a written request from your advisor approving your request at the same time as you submit your other thesis documents. The Request for Withholding form is available via DocuSign.
When you’re ready to share your work with the public, check out the Georgia Tech Digital Repository on disseminating your thesis or dissertation.

Theses and Dissertations
Theses and dissertations are formal research papers that exhaustively address a topic, which PhD and many Master's candidates are required to complete as a final step in working towards their degrees. A paper in support of a PhD is referred to as a "dissertation"; a paper in support of a Master's degree is a "thesis".
The best approach for finding a thesis or dissertation depends on whether you're looking for a paper from NC State or one from another institution.
Theses and dissertations at NC State
- All theses and dissertations in the Libraries' collection – both print and electronic – can be found in the NC State University Libraries Catalog .
- All theses and dissertations completed since 2002 (with some coverage back to 1997) are available electronically through the Libraries' Digital Repository
More information and tips on finding NC State theses and dissertations
Theses and dissertations from other universities
The availability of theses and dissertations from other universities varies, depending on where and when they were published. More information on finding theses and dissertations published at other universities

Harvard University Theses, Dissertations, and Prize Papers
The Harvard University Archives ’ collection of theses, dissertations, and prize papers document the wide range of academic research undertaken by Harvard students over the course of the University’s history.
Beyond their value as pieces of original research, these collections document the history of American higher education, chronicling both the growth of Harvard as a major research institution as well as the development of numerous academic fields. They are also an important source of biographical information, offering insight into the academic careers of the authors.
Spanning from the ‘theses and quaestiones’ of the 17th and 18th centuries to the current yearly output of student research, they include both the first Harvard Ph.D. dissertation (by William Byerly, Ph.D . 1873) and the dissertation of the first woman to earn a doctorate from Harvard ( Lorna Myrtle Hodgkinson , Ed.D. 1922).
Other highlights include:
- The collection of Mathematical theses, 1782-1839
- The 1895 Ph.D. dissertation of W.E.B. Du Bois, The suppression of the African slave trade in the United States, 1638-1871
- Ph.D. dissertations of astronomer Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (Ph.D. 1925) and physicist John Hasbrouck Van Vleck (Ph.D. 1922)
- Undergraduate honors theses of novelist John Updike (A.B. 1954), filmmaker Terrence Malick (A.B. 1966), and U.S. poet laureate Tracy Smith (A.B. 1994)
- Undergraduate prize papers and dissertations of philosophers Ralph Waldo Emerson (A.B. 1821), George Santayana (Ph.D. 1889), and W.V. Quine (Ph.D. 1932)
- Undergraduate honors theses of U.S. President John F. Kennedy (A.B. 1940) and Chief Justice John Roberts (A.B. 1976)
What does a prize-winning thesis look like?
If you're a Harvard undergraduate writing your own thesis, it can be helpful to review recent prize-winning theses. The Harvard University Archives has made available for digital lending all of the Thomas Hoopes Prize winners from the 2019-2021 academic years.

Electronic theses & dissertations (ETDs)
Electronic dissertations and masters’ theses have been deposited in the Libra scholarly repository at the University of Virginia since 2012. Libra makes UVA scholarship available to the world and provides safe and secure storage for the scholarly output of the UVA community. Submitting your work to Libra is a graduation requirement for all graduate students whose programs have required theses and for PhD students. LibraETD is can be used by all students, undergraduate or graduate, whose programs have optional theses or capstones.
Before you upload your thesis or dissertation, be sure you have reviewed:
Copyright Essentials for Scholarly Work (including Graduate Students)
The ETD Submission Checklist
Older dissertation formats
All dissertations submitted to the UVA Library in CD format were deposited into Libra in early 2014. Access to these items is UVA-only, replicating the accessibility level of the originally deposited CDs.
If you are the author of one of these dissertations and would like to change the access level to be world-wide open access, please contact us .
Paper copies
We no longer accept paper copies for the Library shelves. Many frequently requested dissertations from the UVA collection have been added to Libra through a generous grant from Jefferson Trust. If you are the author of one of these dissertations now in Libra and would like to change the access level to be world-wide open access, please contact us .
If your dissertation was published in paper previously and you would like it to be added to Libra, please contact us .
Many UVA dissertations were deposited in ProQuest until 2012, and some students continue to take the option to deposit to this commercial vendor of databases and other information products. ProQuest’s Dissertations and Theses Full Text database contains many dissertations published in the U.S. and is used by scholars worldwide whose institutions opt to provide paid access to the database. ProQuest also sells full-text copies of dissertations directly to the public, though it is worth noting they do not share revenue from those sales with authors. NOTE: To access "online" ETD's in Proquest, you must be affiliated with an institution that subscribes to the ProQuest database.
ProQuest charges fees for submission, and they have particular formatting and copyright requirements. Please see their submission instructions for details. UVA does not require thesis or dissertation deposit to ProQuest, nor does UVA have an institutional agreement with ProQuest for such deposit. Students who opt to deposit with ProQuest do so as individuals contracting with this vendor.

Masters and PhD Thesis and Defense Guidelines
The crucial work produced in the course of graduate study for PhD students is a doctoral dissertation. MS students may also choose to culminate their studies by completing a master's thesis. There is no length requirement for these works, and they are read and approved by a committee put together by the student and their advisor. For PhD candidates, this committee consists of four members of which one must be an outside examiner from outside Tufts. For MS candidates, the committee must include at least 3 faculty members. The department provides a LaTeX template designed to help students meet the Tufts formatting requirements with basic instructions for setting up the document, which can be found on the Organization for Graduate Students in Mathematics Resources page .
Thesis submissions deadlines and other important guidelines can be found in the GSAS Handbook and GSAS' Graduation website . It is essential that you read and understand the Graduate School requirements in order to ensure an on-time graduation. Additionally, students must submit the "Thesis/Dissertation – Request for Final Approval" form to the chair of their committee once a final draft of the document, including any revisions recommended by the committee, is approved for publication.
During the electronic submission process, students are given the opportunity to order bound paper copies of their thesis or dissertation from ProQuest. The department requests that PhD students reserve one of these bound copies to be kept in our library, and will cover the costs for that extra copy.
Thesis Defense
In the last term before graduation, the student and advisor will schedule a thesis defense, which is announced to and open to the whole department and to visitors invited by the candidate.
The standard format is a presentation by the student followed by questions from the audience. The general audience is then asked to leave, and questions from the committee follow. In addition to the Graduate School rules, the Math Department has some additional requirements regarding thesis defenses:
- The defense must be scheduled for a date at least 1 week prior to the thesis submission deadline, allowing time for any corrections to the thesis suggested by the committee to be made;
- The defense date must be finalized and confirmed with the thesis committee 2 weeks in advance;
- The defense date must be announced to the Department and advertised at least 2 weeks prior to the defense date, and with subsequent reminders announced by the office;
- Students are expected to send a draft of their thesis to their committee 2 weeks prior to their defense. This does not have to be a finalized version, but should be substantially complete;
- While the defense must occur with the student and all committee members (except one with permission) attending in person, the defense may be streamed virtually with the consent of the student and committee, allowing for a diverse audience. Similarly, if the student and committee agrees, the public portion of the defense may be recorded. It is strongly encouraged that faculty and graduate students in the department attend these defenses to show support for each other.

Teen earns doctoral degree at 17 after defending her dissertation
Dr. Dorothy Jean Tillman II was 10 when she entered college as a freshman.
A teenager from Chicago walked in her graduation ceremony this month after earning her doctoral degree at 17.
Dr. Dorothy Jean Tillman II was only 10 when she became a freshman at the college of Lake County, majoring in Psychology. In 2020, she earned her Master of Science from Unity College. She was accepted in 2021, when she was 15, into the Doctor of Behavioral Health Management Program at Arizona State University.

Speaking to "Good Morning America," Tillman said she has always held education in such high regard in part due to her family's background.
"People in my life like my grandmother, who was part of the Civil Rights Movement, she of course harped on the importance of education and consistently learning something always," Tillman said.
"But the way I always held education so high on my own, aside from being raised that way was finding different things to be educated about it doesn't just have to be all of the subjects that they teach you in school there's so many things in the world to learn about that we wish we knew about," she said. "I feel like that urge to learn something new just never didn't exist for me."
Tillman said, growing up, she had always felt drawn towards psychology and related fields.
"They've always made me so curious," she said. "And so grinding away, I could continue to study in that area. With even more that was attached to it. It was just really intriguing to me."
In December 2023, at 17, Tillman successfully defended her dissertation to earn her doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health from ASU's College of Health Solutions. On May 6, she walked at ASU's commencement ceremonies.
Tillman told "GMA" prior to the big day that she was feeling "so excited," just like any other student.
"I love having a reason to celebrate and throw a big soirée," she said. "Just that walk, and especially with people I haven't been there, seeing every day, since my program is online, it's just gonna feel really fulfilling to finish."
Dr. Leslie Manson, a clinical associate professor at ASU, told "GMA" that Tillman is the youngest person in school history to earn a doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health.
"It's a wonderful celebration, and we hope ... that Dorothy Jean inspires more students," Manson said, adding of Tillman, "But this is still something so rare and unique."
'Super dad' graduates with master's while working 3 jobs
Throughout Tillman's time at ASU, Mason said she saw her growth in gaining the skills of professional writing as well as leadership, noting that Tillman is "inquisitive" and "intelligent."
"She has innovative ideas and motivation, which is wonderful," Mason explained. "And truly, I think what is inspiring is that she embodies that meaning of being a true leader."
Mason added that "other students can really learn the piece of dedication" from Tillman.
"So that motivating energy, those are the pieces that I think other folks can really turn to and feel inspired about," she said. "That curiosity is always there. And I think all learners come with that. But it's great to be able to see it in someone so young as well."
Her inspiration and how she gives back to community
Tillman's journey to success wouldn't be made possible without the support from her mom whom she said is one of her biggest motivators.
"Seeing my mother consistently worked so hard to continuously uphold our family's legacy, and be that person that everyone was able to go to, if they needed anything... Always seeing [her] like [a] 'Wonder Woman' definitely made me want to grow up [into] an accomplished person," she said.
An advocate for education, Tillman is also the founder and CEO of the Dorothyjeanius STEAM Leadership Institute, where she runs programs like summer camps to help kids find balance between arts and STEM subjects.
"I feel like adding art and putting a focus on it throughout science, technology, engineering, and math, makes the kids excited to learn all those things," she said. "And it opens them up to all of the possibilities and all the knowledge provided in that area of just STEM."

As for her plans after graduation, Tillman said she is "just like any other teenager, still figuring out what my specific dreams and goals are."
"And I'm really just grateful that the world is my oyster, and that I've done so much so young. And I have time to like, kind of think that through," she said.
Discussing her advice to other youngsters, Tillman said she would remind them to be careful about being influenced on what they see on social media, noting that some posts "aren't real."
"There's a lot more to whatever it is than what you're seeing, you know, and so to always remember that is definitely important," she said. "And to always remember that everyone has points in their life where they feel like they're figuring it out…And so figuring things out, not knowing what you want, isn't a bad thing. But making the choice not to sit down and try to figure it out is."
