Welcome to the Marshall Presentation Center

The Marshall Presentation Center is a campus-wide resource for students, faculty, staff, and community partners.

The Marshall Presentation Center was created and is managed by communication scholars and experts in the Department of Communication Studies at Marshall University.

Our goal is to improve your public speaking, presentation, and oral communication skills. We believe that everyone has something important to say, and it is our job to help you say it in an organized, confident, and compelling manner. We are a judgment-free zone and provide a safe and comfortable environment where anyone can practice and perfect their presentations.

Whether you lack confidence in your speaking skills or are concerned about the content of your presentation, we are here to help you become authentic and proficient presenters.

Presentational and public speaking can take many forms and our tutors can help you craft effective messages, encourage dynamic delivery, develop stunning visual aids, and calm public speaking anxiety. We are the only service on campus staffed with trained public speaking consultants who facilitate the recording and immediate feedback of individual or group presentations. To work with us, simply make an appointment via our website with one of our consultants. Appointments are in 15-minute increments and are available for solo and group/team presentations.

Not ready to present? We offer consultation services on topic selection, presentation research, and development, and creating effective visual aids for any type of presentation.

We also work with graduate students and faculty on research presentations, job talks, keynotes, student assessment, and rubric design. Further, we offer in-class workshops for faculty members and PopUp Presentation Workshops for all campus community members.

Brad D. Smith Center for Business & Innovation

Marshall University opened the Brad D. Smith Center for Business and Innovation in January of 2024 in Huntington. Designed by Perkins Eastman , the 77,000-gsf facility provides the Lewis College of Business with state-of-the-art finance and computer labs, a maker space, offices, study areas, and a 360-seat auditorium. Technology-enabled classrooms that range in size from 32 to 96 seats are furnished with flip-top nesting desks on wheels for optimal flexibility. An expansive forum promotes informal interaction and exchange, as well as offering a dynamic setting for large presentations and events. Equipped with writable wall surfaces and advanced videoconferencing technologies, the Smith Center features meeting venues where both large and small businesses can hold gatherings, explore best practices, and engage in collaborative discovery with faculty and students.

Construction manager PJ Dick broke ground on the highly adaptable structure in November of 2021. Representing an investment of approximately $50 million, the public-private project was developed by Fairmount Properties as the anchor building for the Marshall Business and Innovation District.

The MUIC program is a community of Marshall faculty, staff, administrators, and students who are trained in Design for Delight (D4D) and use it to catalyze student-centered innovations collaboratively across the campus and within Marshall’s academic colleges, administrative departments, and student organizations. The MUIC program also trains university and departmental leadership on how to strategically set clear priorities where student-centered innovation is needed the most, to create a culture where everyone innovates for the student, and to measure success with in-market evidence. These trainings empower the entire University to rapidly devise, experiment, and implement innovative initiatives that quickly and delightfully solve the most pressing challenges that Marshall students face inside and outside of the classroom.

Marshall breaks ground on cyber security institute, 'East Coast hub' for national security

by ANNA SAUNDERS

Marshall University's Vice President for Strategic Initiatives Toney Stroud addresses the crowd at Friday's groundbreaking (WCHS).{ }

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WCHS) — It will be known as the Marshall University Institute for Cyber Security, but it will also be home to the National Center of Excellence for Cyber Security for the U.S. Department of Defense.

As university, state and federal leaders gathered to break ground on the latest construction project on Marshall's campus, University President Brad D. Smith said this institute will change the cyber security landscape in education and in national security.

Smith said it was Marshall’s award-winning cybersecurity program that won nationals in 2020 as well as the Marshall professor, Dr. Josh Brunty, who now serves as the U.S. Cyber Team coach that opened eyes across the nation.

“That caught the attention of the Department of Defense. That caught the attention of our state leaders and congressmen, and at the end of the day they decided that Marshall University, West Virginia University, West Virginia State University and the entire ecosystem will defend the entire United States with this amazing institution we’re building right here," Smith said.

Those with the Joint Force Headquarters of the Department of Defense Information Network (JFHQ-DODIN) said Huntington is a great location to be an "East Coast hub" for cybersecurity bringing in West Virginia University and West Virginia State for collaboration as well as Marshall. It will also provide a space for Department of Defense employees to monitor and guard the cyberspace against hackers.

The plan in the building is to have both classroom and lab space for students and office and working room for the U.S. Department of Defense with room for ways they can all work together and learn.

Lt. Gen. Robert J. Skinner, who is the United States Cyber Commander with the JFHQ-DODIN, said the cyber security threat is as prevalent today as ever threatening governments and businesses by the second. He said this institute opens the department up to new talent and in a new location.

“It’s close enough to the Washington D.C. area but not too close, so we’re able to expand the population we can leverage," Lt. Gen. Skinner said. "There’s a lot of talent outside of big cities and that’s what we want to harvest and leverage and take full advantage of it.”

This will also help the state's universities recruit potential students as cyber security is an in-demand profession.

The building itself was made possible by $45 million of funding from the West Virginia Legislature last summer in special session. Some of what will be set up inside will come from federal dollars.

“I’ve been working on this for several years with the DoD and others," Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-WV, said. "It’s much bigger than what I could’ve imagined. It’s not going to just be a beautiful building. It’s going to have top notch creativity within it.”

Construction is expected to last until the Fall of 2026 pending any sort of construction delays. It will be built at the corner of Hal Greer and 4th Avenue in Huntington near the new business school.

“We’ve always been the first to answer the call," Smith said. "We forged the steel. We built the roads. We manufactured the trucks. We fought the wars. When our nation needs us, we respond, and now we need to be able to defend the cyberspace and we are stepping up again as West Virginians in defending the United States of America."
