To help keep kids and teens up to age 18 healthy and engaged, the Library District has partnered with Three Square to provide healthy meals at Kids Cafés at participating library branches: Clark County Library, 1401 E. A’s consider hiring investment firm to help secure LV ballpark financing

T he Oakland Athletics are considering hiring an investment firm to assist team owner John Fisher in securing financing for construction of their planned Las Vegas ballpark.

On Monday, the Los Angeles Times reported that a deal had been struck with New York-based Galatioto Sports Partners to work with the A’s to secure investors to contribute $500 million toward the cost of the team’s $1.5 billion Las Vegas Strip stadium project. The deal would include investors receiving an ownership share in the A’s, according to the report.

The A’s are in discussions with Sal Galatioto and his team, but as of Tuesday morning a formal agreement has not been reached, a person with knowledge of the talks told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Galatioto Sports has worked on over 100 sports deals, with teams including the A’s, Golden State Warriors, New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants, according to the company’s website.

Fisher told the Review-Journal in January that about $1 billion in stadium construction costs remaining after the $380 million in public funding would mostly be funded with equity from his family. But he he noted he was interested in potentially raising capital for the ballpark from outside investors, especially ones who are based in Nevada.

“That creates a connection to the community, and we’ve seen that with a lot of other teams become a successful thing,” Fisher said in January.

The 33,000 fan-capacity stadium is scheduled to be built on 9 acres of the 35-acre Tropicana hotel site.

The A’s are working to finalize drafts of its development, non-relocation and lease agreements with the Las Vegas Stadium Authority. The development agreement will detail the construction plans and how the project will be funded.

Drafts of the trio of agreements could be presented when the stadium authority next meets on May 16.

The three outstanding agreements, on top of the already approved community benefits agreement, must be approved before construction can begin and for the up to $380 million in public funding earmarked last summer by Senate Bill 1 to be available to the team to use on the project.

The Tropicana closed April 2 to begin prepping the building for demolition. Clark County issued Bally’s Corp. and contractor GGG Demolition a demolition permit on April 25. The permit is for a standard demolition, but Bally’s is hoping to bring the building down via implosion , Bally’s chairman Soo Kim told the Las Vegas Review-Journal last week. The county on March 22 also issued a dust control permit to GGG Demolition tied to the Tropicana project.

Clark County spokeswoman Stacey Welling said in order for Bally’s to implode the Tropicana, the company must also secure a blasting permit and a separate demolition permit from the county. Kim noted that GGG Demolition was in the process of working on some preconditions that have to be met in order for implosion to be possible.

The demolition, whether its conventional or implosion, is expected to occur in September or October, Kim said. The A’s plan to begin construction on their Las Vegas ballpark in April 2025.

Plans call for the stadium to be built and ready to host its first A’s game for the 2028 MLB season.

A's Owner John Fisher Hires Group to Help Attract an Investor in Team

  • Author: Jason Burke

John Fisher keeps proving that he did not in fact "do everything he could" to stay in Oakland. On Monday night, Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times reported that Galatioto Sports Partners have been hired by the club to "attract an investor — or several — to put in that $500 million, in exchange for a share of ownership."

For months, there have been rumors that John Fisher doesn't have the funding lined up to get a ballpark build in Las Vegas, and this report, at least for the time being, confirms those rumors.

Back at the "are we alive back there?" fireside chat in January, Fisher told reporters that he was looking to sell a stake in the team in order to help pay for the proposed Las Vegas ballpark. We are now a day away from May and seemingly starting a new path to finding a sucker, i mean, investor, after Goldman Sachs couldn't line someone up.

As always, the question for this process has been what kind of valuation Fisher is looking for. The team is valued at $1.2 billion according to Forbes , which would leave an investor with 41.6% of the franchise. In other words, not a controlling stake in the team. One reason for a lack of a deal so far is that anyone that would be willing to put up $500 million would want control.

There is also the other option, which is that Fisher is looking for a valuation closer to what the franchise will be worth once the ballpark is built. That could be around double the current value, or about $2.5 billion. That would also leave an investor with a much smaller stake in ownership, at around 20%.

Those are the real issues at play here, and unless something changes from the way that they've been going, there isn't going to be much that Galatioto Sports Partners or anyone else will be able to do to help Fisher here.

It should also be noted that despite Fisher saying numerous times that he and his family have the funds lined up, that the hiring of an outside firm to help facilitate the sale of part of the franchise is either an admission of not actually having the funds available, or an unwillingness to actually spend that money that is available. Neither of which is a great look.

Added to the equation are the two lawsuits that the public financing in Nevada is facing, one challenging the legality of SB1, and the other to get a referendum vote in November. With those looming, would it be a wise investment to hand over $500 million for a team that is not absolutely guaranteed to land in Las Vegas?

These are all pertinent questions that have no answers at the moment, and lead some to believe that the A's could end up staying in Sacramento long-term.

Hundreds call Las Vegas police during 911 outage

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - Hundreds of people called 911 during an outage in the Las Vegas area last week.

The outage was nearly three hours and impacted multiple states, including Nevada, Nebraska and South Dakota. Multiple agencies in Southern Nevada told residents to utilize the “text to 911″ service during the outage while they worked out the issue.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said there were 804 emergency calls placed to 911 on April 17 from 6 p.m.-8:45 p.m., during the outage. There were 33 requests sent to “text to 911″ services during the same timeframe.

LVMPD said the call volume during the outage was on par with typical call volume during that time period. The usage of “text 911″ increased slightly during the outage.

LVMPD said at least ten callers dialed 911 during the outage to “test” whether it was working.

The outage was due to a Lumen Technologies fiber line being cut in Kansas City, Missouri during light pole maintenance, Lumen global issues director Mark Molzen said in an email. FOX5 asked Lumen Technologies why so many states were impacted from the fiber line being cut and how the system is connected from state-to-state.

The Federal Communications Commission said it was investigating the outage.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
