How to Name a Love Story

Choose Something Memorable

When crafting a story title, one of the most important things to remember is that it should be memorable. Your readers should be able to easily recall your title so they can recommend it to their friends or family members.

It’s also important that your title stands out from other similar titles in its genre. For example, if you’re writing a novel about love and loss, don’t choose something generic like “Love and Loss.” Instead, try something unique that stands out from similar titles, such as “The Unrequited Love Affair.”

Be Appropriate

Your story title should always remain appropriate in content and tone. You want to ensure that your audience feels comfortable reading your work and doesn’t feel they need to censor themselves when sharing it with others. Also, be aware of cultural sensitivities—avoid language or imagery that certain groups could misinterpret or deem offensive.

Use Writing Prompts

If you’re struggling with a good title for your story, why not try using writing prompts? Writing prompts provide an easy way to generate ideas for titles quickly and effectively. Type in “writing prompt” into Google or another search engine, and you’ll find plenty of websites that provide ideas for stories , characters, settings, and even titles!

How to Write a Love Story

Create an engaging plot.

The plot is the backbone of your story and should be carefully developed to make sure it keeps readers engaged. Start by establishing the setting in which your story takes place and introducing the main characters. Then, determine what obstacles or challenges stand in the way of your characters getting together–these could be external or internal forces that need to be overcome before they can have their happily ever after.

Finally, consider where you want your characters’ relationship and how you plan to get them there. This will help ensure that your plot doesn’t feel stagnant or predictable as it develops.

Develop Your Characters

Your characters should be dynamic and layered so readers can relate to them and understand why they’re going through this particular journey of finding love. Spend some time thinking about each character’s backstory and motivations, so you know who they are as individuals before they become part of a couple.

Make sure they each have unique personalities, strengths, weaknesses, flaws, etc., so that readers are invested in their relationship even when it hits its bumps.

Create Intense Conflict

No good love story is complete without conflict! Readers need to see why these two people have difficulty connecting and what ultimately helps them overcome those obstacles (which could range from family disapproval or career ambitions to personal trauma).

Conflict is also essential for adding tension throughout your story–without it; your narrative may come off as too saccharine-sweet or trite. Give your characters something real to fight for!

Use Description Liberally

Description is essential for helping readers visualize the setting of your story and feel like they’re right there alongside your characters as they fall in love with one another. Incorporate sensory details (such as sights, smells, tastes) into meaningful moments between your two protagonists; not only will this help bring their relationship alive on the page, but it will also help convey important themes within your narrative arc—perhaps even making it more emotionally resonant than if you had relied solely on dialogue alone!

What Makes a Good Hook for a Love Story

Set the mood with a strong opening sentence.

The opening sentence of your love story should set the tone of the whole tale. Whether you want to start with an intense action scene or an emotional monologue, choose one technique and stick with it throughout the book.

For example, if you open with a dramatic action scene, keep up that intensity throughout the book by including suspenseful moments. This will keep your readers engaged and excited about what will happen next.

Introduce Your Characters Immediately

It’s important to introduce both of your main characters as early as possible to give your readers an idea of who they are and why they should care about them. You can describe each character’s physical traits—hair color, eye color, height—and their personality traits—outgoing or shy? Funny or serious? Laid back or ambitious?—so readers can start forming connections with them.

Create Tension Between Your Characters

Your characters don’t have to be immediately smitten with each other; in fact, creating tension between them can be even more interesting for readers! Have one character disagree with the other about something important or have one character think they know better than the other—whatever it is, make sure there is some friction between them from page one. This will give readers something tangible to root against and make them eager to see how things turn out.

What Makes a Book Title Attractive

Conveying meaning and emotion.

It’s essential to make sure your title conveys meaning and emotion in as few words as possible. Your title should evoke emotion from your reader, whether it be curiosity, excitement, or joy. An excellent way to do this is by using descriptive words that set the tone for your book and express its theme. Additionally, avoid generic titles like “The Big Adventure,” which could describe any number of books. Instead, opt for something more specific like “The Pirate’s Treasure Hunt” or “The Witch’s Curse,” which will immediately pique the reader’s interest.

Being Unique

Similarly, make sure your title stands out among other books in its genre by being unique. This means avoiding clichés and overused phrases such as “A Journey Through Time” or “Tales from Another Land.”

To ensure you come up with something original, brainstorm different combinations of words that relate to your story and then try them out until you find one that resonates with you. Additionally, if you need help coming up with ideas, plenty of online tools are available to help generate titles for books, so don’t hesitate to use them!

Using Imagery

Imagery can also be constructive when writing an attention-grabbing book title. Words such as “whisper” or “frosty” can evoke vivid mental images that draw readers in even before reading the story’s synopsis. For example, instead of calling your novel “The Werewolf,” why not call it “Howling Under The Moon”? This is much more evocative than simply naming it after the creature itself. It gives readers immediate suspense and intrigue about what might happen in the story !

Essays About Love: 20 Intriguing Ideas for Students

Love can make a fascinating essay topic, but sometimes finding the perfect topic idea is challenging. Here are 20 of the best essays about love.

Writers have often explored the subject of love and what it means throughout history. In his book Essays in Love , Alain de Botton creates an in-depth essay on what love looks like, exploring a fictional couple’s relationship while highlighting many facts about love. This book shows how much there is to say about love as it beautifully merges non-fiction with fiction work.

The New York Times  published an entire column dedicated to essays on modern love, and many prize-winning reporters often contribute to the collection. With so many published works available, the subject of love has much to be explored.

If you are going to write an essay about love and its effects, you will need a winning topic idea. Here are the top 20 topic ideas for essays about love. These topics will give you plenty to think about and explore as you take a stab at the subject that has stumped philosophers, writers, and poets since the dawn of time.

For help with your essays, check out our round-up of the best essay checkers .

Essays About Love

Defining love may not be as easy as you think. While it seems simple, love is an abstract concept with multiple potential meanings. Exploring these meanings and then creating your own definition of love can make an engaging essay topic.

To do this, first, consider the various conventional definitions of love. Then, compare and contrast them until you come up with your own definition of love.

One essay about love you could tackle is describing and analyzing a favorite love story. This story could be from a fiction tale or real life. It could even be your love story.

As you analyze and explain the love story, talk about the highs and lows of love. Showcase the hard and great parts of this love story, then end the essay by talking about what real love looks like (outside the flowers and chocolates).

Essays About Love: What true love looks like?

This essay will explore what true love looks like. With this essay idea, you could contrast true love with the romantic love often shown in movies. This contrast would help the reader see how true love looks in real life.

An essay about what true love looks like could allow you to explore this kind of love in many different facets. It would allow you to discuss whether or not someone is, in fact, in true love. You could demonstrate why saying “I love you” is not enough through the essay.

There seems to be something ingrained in human nature to seek love. This fact could make an interesting essay on love and its meaning, allowing you to explore why this might be and how it plays out in human relationships.

Because humans seem to gravitate toward committed relationships, you could argue that we are hard-wired for love. But, again, this is an essay option that has room for growth as you develop your thoughts.

There are many different types of love. For example, while you can have romantic love between a couple, you may also have family love among family members and love between friends. Each of these types of love has a different expression, which could lend itself well to an interesting essay topic.

Writing an essay that compares and contrasts the different types of love would allow you to delve more deeply into the concept of love and what makes up a loving relationship.

What does love mean? This question is not as easy to answer as you might think. However, this essay topic could give you quite a bit of room to develop your ideas about love.

While exploring this essay topic, you may discover that love means different things to different people. For some, love is about how someone makes another person feel. To others, it is about actions performed. By exploring this in an essay, you can attempt to define love for your readers.

What can love make people do? This question could lend itself well to an essay topic. The power of love is quite intense, and it can make people do things they never thought they could or would do.

With this love essay, you could look at historical examples of love, fiction stories about love relationships, or your own life story and what love had the power to do. Then, at the end of your essay, you can determine how powerful love is.

The idea of a soul mate is someone who you are destined to be with and love above all others. This essay topic would allow you to explore whether or not each individual has a soul mate.

If you determine that they do, you could further discuss how you would identify that soul mate. How can you tell when you have found “the one” right for you? Expanding on this idea could create a very interesting and unique essay.

Essays About Love: Determine if all relationships should experience a break-up

Break-ups seem inevitable, and strong relationships often come back together afterward. Yet are break-ups truly inevitable? Or are they necessary to create a strong bond? This idea could turn into a fascinating essay topic if you look at both sides of the argument.

On the one hand, you could argue that the break-up experience shows you whether or not your relationship can weather difficult times. On the other hand, you could argue that breaking up damages the trust you’re working to build. Regardless of your conclusion, you can build a solid essay off of this topic idea.

Love, at first sight is a common theme in romance stories, but is it possible? Explore this idea in your essay. You will likely find that love, at first sight, is nothing more than infatuation, not genuine love.

Yet you may discover that sometimes, love, at first sight, does happen. So, determine in your essay how you can differentiate between love and infatuation if it happens to you. Then, conclude with your take on love at first sight and if you think it is possible.

The love between a parent and child is much different than the love between a pair of lovers. This type of love is one-sided, with care and self-sacrifice on the parent’s side. However, the child’s love is often unconditional.

Exploring this dynamic, especially when contrasting parental love with romantic love, provides a compelling essay topic. You would have the opportunity to define this type of love and explore what it looks like in day-to-day life.

Most people want to fall in love and enjoy a loving relationship, but does love have a downside? In an essay, you can explore the disadvantages of love and show how even one of life’s greatest gifts is not without its challenges.

This essay would require you to dig deep and find the potential downsides of love. However, if you give it a little thought, you should be able to discuss several. Finally, end the essay by telling the reader whether or not love is worth it despite the many challenges.

Love is blind is a popular phrase that indicates love allows someone not to see another person’s faults. But is love blind, or is it simply a metaphor that indicates the ability to overlook issues when love is at the helm.

If you think more deeply about this quote, you will probably determine that love is not blind. Rather, love for someone can overshadow their character flaws and shortcomings. When love is strong, these things fall by the wayside. Discuss this in your essay, and draw your own conclusion to decide if love is blind.

When someone falls in love, their body feels specific hormonal and chemical changes. These changes make it easier to want to spend time with the person. Yet they can be fascinating to study, and you could ask whether or not love is just chemical reactions or something more.

Grab a science book or two and see if you can explore these physiological changes from love. From the additional sweating to the flushing of the face, you will find quite a few chemical changes that happen when someone is in love.

Love feels like a positive emotion that does not have many ethical concerns, but this is not true. Several ethical questions come from the world of love. Exploring these would make for an interesting and thoughtful essay.

For example, you could discuss if it is ethically acceptable to love an object or even oneself or love other people. You could discuss if it is appropriate to enter into a physical relationship if there is no love present or if love needs to come first. There are many questions to explore with this love essay.

If you choose to love someone, is heartbreak inevitable? This question could create a lengthy essay. However, some would argue that it is because either your object of affection will eventually leave you through a break-up or death.

Yet do these actions have to cause heartbreak, or are they simply part of the process? Again, this question lends itself well to an essay because it has many aspects and opinions to explore.

Literature is full of stories of love. You could choose a genre, like mythology or science fiction, and explore the role of love in that particular genre. With this essay topic, you may find many instances where love is a vital central theme of the work.

Keep in mind that in some genres, like myths, love becomes a driving force in the plot, while in others, like historical fiction, it may simply be a background part of the story. Therefore, the type of literature you choose for this essay would significantly impact the way your essay develops.

Most people want to fall in love, but is love freeing or oppressing? The answer may depend on who your loved ones are. Love should free individuals to authentically be who they are, not tie them into something they are not.

Yet there is a side of love that can be viewed as oppressive, deepening on your viewpoint. For example, you should stay committed to just that individual when you are in a committed relationship with someone else. Is this freeing or oppressive? Gather opinions through research and compare the answers for a compelling essay.

You can easily find stories of people that did foolish things for love. These stories could translate into interesting and engaging essays. You could conclude the answer to whether or not love makes people do foolish things.

Your answer will depend on your research, but chances are you will find that, yes, love makes people foolish at times. Then you could use your essay to discuss whether or not it is still reasonable to think that falling in love is a good thing, although it makes people act foolishly at times.

Most fiction works have love in them in some way. This may not be romantic love, but you will likely find characters who love something or someone.

Use that fact to create an essay. Pick your favorite story, either through film or written works, and explore what love looks like in that work. Discuss the character development, storyline, and themes and show how love is used to create compelling storylines.

What is love essay: 250 words

Lao Tzu once said, “Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength while loving someone deeply gives you courage.” Indeed, love can transform individuals, relationships, and our world.

A word of immense depth and countless interpretations, love has always fascinated philosophers, poets, and ordinary individuals. This  emotion breaks boundaries and has a super power to change lives. But what is love, actually?

It’s a force we feel in countless ways. It is the warm embrace of a parent, filled with care and unwavering support. It is the gentle touch of a lover, sparking a flame that ignites passion and desire. Love is the kind words of a friend, offering solace and understanding in times of need. It is the selfless acts of compassion and empathy that bind humanity together.

Love is not confined to romantic relationships alone. It is found in the family bonds, the connections we forge with friends, and even the compassion we extend to strangers. Love is a thread that weaves through the fabric of our lives, enriching and nourishing our souls.

However, love is not without its complexities. It can be both euphoric and agonizing, uplifting and devastating. Love requires vulnerability, trust, and the willingness to embrace joy and pain. It is a delicate balance between passion and compassion, independence and interdependence.

Finally, the essence of love may be elusive to define with mere words. It is an experience that surpasses language and logic, encompassing a spectrum of emotions and actions. Love is a profound connection that unites us all, reminding us of our shared humanity and the capacity for boundless compassion.

A 500-word essay on why I love you

Trying to encapsulate why I love you in a mere 500 words is impossible. My love for you goes beyond the confines of language, transcending words and dwelling in the realm of emotions, connections, and shared experiences. Nevertheless, I shall endeavor to express the depth and breadth of my affection for you.

First and foremost, I love you for who you are. You possess a unique blend of qualities and characteristics that captivate my heart and mind. Your kindness and compassion touch the lives of those around you, and I am grateful to be the recipient of your unwavering care and understanding. Your intelligence and wit constantly challenge me to grow and learn, stimulating my mind and enriching our conversations. You have a beautiful spirit that radiates warmth and joy, and I am drawn to your vibrant energy.

I love the way you make me feel. When I am with you, I feel a sense of comfort and security that allows me to be my true self. Your presence envelops me in a cocoon of love and acceptance, where I can express my thoughts, fears, and dreams without fear of judgment. Your support and encouragement inspire me to pursue my passions and overcome obstacles. With you by my side, I feel empowered to face the world, knowing I have a partner who believes in me.

I love the memories we have created together. From the laughter-filled moments of shared adventures to the quiet and intimate conversations, every memory is etched in my heart. Whether exploring new places, indulging in our favorite activities, or simply enjoying each other’s company in comfortable silence, each experience reinforces our bond. Our shared memories serve as a foundation for our relationship, a testament to the depth of our connection and the love that binds us.

I love your quirks and imperfections. Your true essence shines through these unique aspects! Your little traits make me smile and remind me of the beautiful individual you are. I love how you wrinkle your nose when you laugh, become lost in thought when reading a book, and even sing off-key in the shower. These imperfections make you human, relatable, and utterly lovable.

I love the future we envision together. We support each other’s goals, cheering one another on as we navigate the path toward our dreams. The thought of building a life together, creating a home filled with love and shared experiences, fills my heart with anticipation and excitement. The future we imagine is one that I am eager to explore with you by my side.

In conclusion, the reasons why I love you are as vast and varied as the universe itself. It is a love that defies logic and surpasses the limitations of language. From the depths of my being, I love you for the person you are, the way you make me feel, the memories we cherish, your quirks and imperfections, and the future we envision together. My love for you is boundless, unconditional, and everlasting.

Love is a set of emotions, behaviors, and beliefs with strong feelings of affection. So, for example, a person might say he or she loves his or her dog, loves freedom, or loves God. The concept of love may become an unimaginable thing and also it may happen to each person in a particular way.

Love has a variety of feelings, emotions, and attitude. For someone love is more than just being interested physically in another one, rather it is an emotional attachment. We can say love is more of a feeling that a person feels for another person. Therefore, the basic meaning of love is to feel more than liking towards someone.

Need of Love

We know that the desire to love and care for others is a hard-wired and deep-hearted because the fulfillment of this wish increases the happiness level. Expressing love for others benefits not just the recipient of affection, but also the person who delivers it. The need to be loved can be considered as one of our most basic and fundamental needs.

One of the forms that this need can take is contact comfort. It is the desire to be held and touched. So there are many experiments showing that babies who are not having contact comfort, especially during the first six months, grow up to be psychologically damaged.

Significance of Love

Love is as critical for the mind and body of a human being as oxygen. Therefore, the more connected you are, the healthier you will be physically as well as emotionally. It is also true that the less love you have, the level of depression will be more in your life. So, we can say that love is probably the best antidepressant.

It is also a fact that the most depressed people don’t love themselves and they do not feel loved by others. They also become self-focused and hence making themselves less attractive to others.

Society and Love

It is a scientific fact that society functions better when there is a certain sense of community. Compassion and love are the glue for society. Hence without it, there is no feeling of togetherness for further evolution and progress. Love , compassion, trust and caring we can say that these are the building blocks of relationships and society.

Relationship and Love

A relationship is comprised of many things such as friendship , sexual attraction , intellectual compatibility, and finally love. Love is the binding element that keeps a relationship strong and solid. But how do you know if you are in love in true sense? Here are some symptoms that the emotion you are feeling is healthy, life-enhancing love.

Love is the Greatest Wealth in Life

Love is the greatest wealth in life because we buy things we love for our happiness. For example, we build our dream house and purchase a favorite car to attract love. Being loved in a remote environment is a better experience than been hated even in the most advanced environment.

Love or Money

Love should be given more importance than money as love is always everlasting. Money is important to live, but having a true companion you can always trust should come before that. If you love each other, you will both work hard to help each other live an amazing life together.

Love has been a vital reason we do most things in our life. Before we could know ourselves, we got showered by it from our close relatives like mothers , fathers , siblings, etc. Thus love is a unique gift for shaping us and our life. Therefore, we can say that love is a basic need of life. It plays a vital role in our life, society, and relation. It gives us energy and motivation in a difficult time. Finally, we can say that it is greater than any other thing in life.

How to Make a Good Title for an Essay

The success of an essay heavily depends on its title. This may not come as a surprise given that the essay title is the first aspect to provide the reader with a sneak peek into the text. It piques our interest to read the paper in the first place and gives us a preview of what to expect from the author.

Our research paper writing help prepared a thorough guide on how to title an essay. Here you may find tips and tricks for developing an effective APA or MLA essay title. So, let's dive straight into the article for more exciting details!

Essay Title Format

During your essay writing process, ensure you know the stylistic requirements before beginning an essay. Knowing the format you need to employ is crucial because different style manuals may have varying requirements. Mostly, you could have used an APA or MLA essay title format. Our service, where you can buy essay online , explains these two in more detail below.

Essay Title MLA

If you're required to create an essay title MLA format, check whether your instructor wants you to make a separate cover page. If not, put a heading at the beginning of your work that includes your name, the name of your professor, the course ID, and, lastly, the date.

On the other hand, if you must present a cover page for your essay title MLA, then you need to include the following:

  • The name of the college
  • The title of your paper
  • The subtitle of your paper, if applicable
  • Your first and last name
  • Your teacher or professor's name
  • The class name or course number
  • The date the paper is due

The formatting instructions are as follows:

  • Double-spaced
  • Times New Roman font
  • Size 12 font
  • Apart from very short terms, each word's initial letter should be capitalized. The initial word, however, must always be uppercase.
  • The title page shouldn't include a header with the page numbers.

Essay Title APA

Having discussed the MLA format essay title, let's explore what the APA student title page includes:

  • The paper title
  • Author names
  • Institutional affiliation where the author carried out the study
  • Name and number of the course
  • Professor name
  • Page number

The title of an essay format instructions:

  • double-spaced
  • 1" margins
  • 12-point Times New Roman
  • According to APA, your title should be targeted and brief, without unnecessary words or abbreviations

How to Choose a Good Title for an Essay: Important Qualities

Nobody will read a dull headline. Your title should grab your audience's attention and encourage them to read the rest of the work. As it is one of the initial things readers see, having a strong attention grabber is essential when writing an essay from scratch. To fully understand how to come up with a title for essay that is strong and exciting, let's consider a few following factors:

Employ a Catchy Hook - Usually, the title of essay format follows a similar basic structure, especially if they are used for an academic article. The hook serves as a unique component that attracts the reader. It's a captivating statement informing others about the topic of the essay. You can also explore several types of sentences with examples that can help you develop the ideal hook structure.

Consider Topic Keywords - These are essential terms or expressions pertinent to your subject and help your reader understand the focus and body of your article. These focus keywords should serve as a brief, one- to two-word article summary. You can choose some terms from the research topic your instructor gave you, but after your thesis statement is formed, this is where you should hunt for ideas.

Use a Colon - A colon is frequently used in academic titles to separate concepts and sentences. The standard procedure is to place a clever remark or brief quotation before the colon. Although these beginning words offer flavor, they can be overdone. Because of this, some individuals find using the colon to be repugnant. Therefore be careful not to misuse this method.

Ask a Question - To write essay title that is strong, consider asking a question. But, use it with caution because posing a question will make your tone less formal. As long as the question is suitably phrased to meet the subject of your essay, feel free to employ it. Always check to see if the title question still applies to your points in the essay's body. The thesis statement should be appropriately reflected as well.

Find Inspirational Quotes - There is no formula for selecting essay titles from the textual content. You may get playful and choose any quotation, proverb, or catchphrase that applies to your particular publication and works as a title. You may also create a great essay title using well-known expressions or idioms. Doing so will help your readers relate to and feel more comfortable discussing your subject.

How to Title an Essay headline

Here are other rules for how to create a good title:

  • Title every section of writing: In the process of writing, create interesting subheadings to give your paragraphs an identity. Also, they make your text look ordered and clear.
  • The title must bear the theme of the text: choose a title that summarizes the essay.
  • Capitalize all words with certain exceptions: Capitalize the first letter of every word in the title, but do not capitalize pronouns, articles, prepositions, and conjunctions.
  • Avoid underlining the title: Since topics come in boldface, underlining it will amount to overemphasis. Some authorities say that if you must underline it, do not bolden it.
  • Review the final version of the title: Do not forget to do a quick review of the final version of the title—check for grammar, structure, spelling and so on. Re-read it to determine if the title has given justice to the essay. Confirm if the topic is catchy enough to attract your reader’s attention.
  • When using a colon in your title, follow the rules: Since we are dealing with punctuation rules here, let us talk about the colon – when you have two eye-catching topics, separate them with a colon.

Student’s Guide on How to Come Up with a Title for an Essay

Titling an essay can be easy, but there are a few core principles to be taken into account. The following tips will help you stay on track and avoid any common pitfalls.

Essay Goes First

Never start with a title! If you write it before the rest of the text, it will be based on it, and it should be vice versa. Writing an essay before choosing a heading will give you a clear understanding of what should make sense to the reader. Re-read the finished paper several times to decide on the title. The last thing to create is a title - such strategy will give more time to spend on crafting an essay outline, conducting research, or writing the paper itself.

How to Title an Essay, Complete Guide 2

What are you writing about? What is the style of your paper, and is it an academic essay or a free-form essay like a narrative essay? If the topic of your essay is “Do people who commit heinous crimes deserve the death penalty?” your title should not be humorous; it should be strict and to the point.

If your topic is “Why do people like watching funny cat videos?”, feel free to craft a funny title. Determine the tone of your essay and base your title on it—in consideration with the essay’s topic.

The tone can be:

  • Serious - “The implications of global warming”
  • Funny - “How cats and dogs love their masters”
  • Amiable - “Ways to fight depression”
  • Persuasive - “Why positive thinking is a must have skill for every person”
  • Informative - “Ten rules for creating a chemical at home”

The main goal of a title is to name its paper. There is no need to tell an entire story in the title, or provide any useless details. Sum up your paper in a few words! Another way to do this is to sum up your thesis statement, as it represents the main idea of your essay. Take your thesis and squeeze it into 3-4 words. Imagine that you are creating a title for your favourite newspaper or a slogan for Coca-Cola.

Don’t use fancy words! Take 2-3 main words (keywords), put them together, and stop wasting your time. Avoid jargon and abbreviations.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is something that can help any student and young writer reap benefits. While working on a title, detect the words related to the central idea of the paper. Type the words into the search field of Google and add the word “quote.” A search engine will show numerous web pages with in-text quotations that could be useful. Select the fragment you like. It is possible to learn how to make a creative title for an essay in this way.

Discover several more tips from experts:

  • Never forget the “What,” “Who,” “When,” “How,” “Why,” and “Where” questions (if you start with one of these questions, your title has a chance of getting noticed);
  • Come up with an unexpected image not related to the selected topic;
  • Sometimes, starting with a lie increases the chances of a title being able to catch an eye;
  • Review our catchy essay title examples.

Essay Title Examples: Bad vs Good

How to Title an Essay: Guide with Creative Examples [2024]

It’s not a secret that the reader notices an essay title first. No catchy hook or colorful examples attract more attention from a quick glance. Composing a creative title for your essay is essential if you strive to succeed, as it:

Our specialists will write a custom essay specially for you!

  • causes the first impression;
  • reflects the tone, topic, and the purpose of the writing;
  • indicates the author’s credibility.

Thus, how you name your paper is of the same importance as the paper itself.

Good titles for essays should be concise and eye-catching. Nobody likes long and cumbersome headings that do not reflect the point of the paper. While tilting your work, pay enough attention to the word choice. How do you come up with a good title? Use your common sense and imagination. For more details, our experts prepared the sections below.

A title is a critical part of any academic paper, so you must understand what to include and how to choose it. Here are some features that your heading has to show.

👩‍🏫 How to Title an Essay?

Are you struggling with formulating a heading? Yes, this task is quite challenging. But let’s figure out the basic rules.

The title of any paper should reveal:

Just in 1 hour! We will write you a plagiarism-free paper in hardly more than 1 hour

  • What the paper is about. Cover the general idea of your work in the title.
  • Why the reader might be interested in it. Prove the relevance of your paper to the audience.
  • The context of the issue. A good title previews the full picture of the topic regarding its “when” and “where.”

To nail your essay heading, follow the guide below. Check our title examples if you are not sure about your abilities. You can also try and use a creative title page generator for a faster result.

Before writing a title to your essay, you should finish your paper. This way, you’ll be able to reread and get the whole idea to incorporate it into your title.

Moreover, you’ll see how long a title should be for an essay after finishing the entire piece. But remember: not too lengthy and not too wordy.

The essay title depends on the type of essay:

  • Narrative essay . For this kind of essay, the title should not provide any detailed info or reflect your position. It should only present the general idea of your piece of writing. For example, the narrative essay topic may look like this: My Thorny Pass to Success.
  • Argumentative essay . The title for an argumentative essay should clearly state the point you are going to support. For instance, you can choose the following heading: Social Media Has a Negative Effect on Teenagers.
  • Cause and effect essay . For this kind of essay writing, the title should be clear and provide a background of the issue. The reader should immediately understand what the problem is, what its cause is, what an effect is. Usually, writers use the words “due to” or “because” to highlight the cause-effect correlation. Look at the example: Because Coronavirus Attacks, People Start to Explore New Ways of Remote Working.
  • Persuasive essay . A persuasive essay should have a dynamic title that immediately calls to action. Moreover, the topic has to be relevant to the audience. For example, for students, the following title would be compelling: Sleep 7-8 Hours a Day: the Lack of Sleep Affects Academic Performance.

The most straightforward way of creating an essay title is summarizing. Sum up the whole paper in one sentence, focus on the central idea, cut the details, and use it as the title.

Receive a plagiarism-free paper tailored to your instructions. Cut 20% off your first order!

For this purpose, you can take your thesis statement and restate it, adding creativity. Or use the best summary generator you can find to simplify the task. But don’t forget to make sure that it sounds catchy and explains why the potential reader should check your essay.

For example:

Let’s imagine, you are writing about Artificial Intelligence, and your thesis statement sounds like this:

The purpose of this paper is to explore the advantages of Artificial intelligence’s influence on society and to discover possible outcomes.

Then, the title may be the following:

Artificial Intelligence – the Next Step into the Bright Future.

Every essay includes the key concepts that you explored and the terms that you used for this. You should find essential words and phrases and incorporate them into the essay titles. The keywords will focus the reader’s attention on the central topic of your paper.

Get an originally-written paper according to your instructions!

You are writing about the negative impact of deforestation on the environment. These are your keywords, as they are the most vital ones. Thus, the title would sound like this:

Protecting the Environment: Deforestation Should be Stopped.

Every educational institution requires to format the academic papers for a particular writing style. Among a wide diversity of citation styles , the most popular ones are APA and MLA formats.

There are a lot of specific requirements regarding the essay title formats. So, let’s investigate these styles.

The APA style requires a title page at the beginning of your research paper. Here, where the readers first meet the heading. The title page should include the following:

  • The paper’s title. Centered, bold, capitalized, 3-4 lines below the top margin.
  • The author’s name (first name, middle initial, last name). Centered, not bold, two lines below the title.
  • The author’s affiliations. Centered, not bold, immediately after the name.
  • Number and name of the course.
  • The instructor’s name and title.
  • Page number in the top right corner.

See the example of an APA title page below:

The title page in APA format.

The MLA style does not require a separate title page. Still, some formatting rules are to be strictly followed.

  • The MLA paper should start one inch from the top of the document, flush left.
  • Write the author’s name, then the instructor’s name, the course number, and the date. Each item should be on a separate double-spaced line.
  • Add the title of your paper. It should be centered and capitalized.
  • Do not put quotation marks, underline, italicize, or boldface your MLA title. Just make it centered and capitalized.

Here is an example of an MLA title formatting.

The essay title in MLA format.

Before choosing a title, figure out is the tone of your essay. Is it more formal or friendly? Do you write it for a college or a personal blog?

Change the wording to make your title sound more catchy and positive. Or serious and official. You can try something new and come up with a creative title for your essay.

You need to write an article about the benefits of healthy eating for university and your online blog. For an academic essay, your title would probably look like this:

A Well-Balanced Diet Is a Key to a Healthy Organism.

In contrast, for a blog article, it would be better to write something like this:

An Apple a Day Keeps a Doctor Away: How Healthy Eating Helps us Be Fit.

Do you see the magic? One topic, different wording, and completely diverse tones as a result. So, try until you reach the most appropriate version of the title for your piece of writing.

How to Create Brilliant Book Titles (With Examples)

good titles for essays on love

A good book title can mean the difference between a bestseller and a lifeless shelf-dweller.

If you don’t believe me, look up  First Hundred Million  by editor E. Haldeman-Julius. He explains that changing just the book title can rocket a book from selling 6,000 copies a year to 50,000 copies a year.

In this post I’m going to give you a list of great book titles, but I’m also going to give you some information that will help you choose the best title for  your  book.

The title is what people see first. It’s what they remember when they go home to look the book up. It’s what they say when they recommend the book to others. It’s the most important marketing decision that a writer can make because, while a good title can’t make a book popular, it can certainly keep a book from getting sold.

Yes, a book’s cover art is important, but there are some books that, once readers see the title, think, “Hmm, now that sounds interesting.” And they pick the book up.

That  is what we’re after. Cover artists and publishers can decide on the art, but  you  are responsible for  your  book’s title – especially in the case of self-publishing.

A Good Book Title Is:

  • Unique A unique title captures the essence of the book, stakes out new territory in the arms race of book naming, and provokes curiosity. Upon reading or hearing it, a person should get an idea of what your book is about without entirely knowing what’s inside.   Example:  The Forest of Hands and Teeth . Have you ever heard of a book like that? And don’t you want to find out more?
  • Catches the reader’s attention  Think of Dave Egger’s book You Shall Know Our Velocity . I love that title! It’s so energetic. Imagine someone walking in a bookstore, passing by hundreds of books. How can your title stand out among the rest? How can it provoke curiosity?
  • Easily remembered Unique titles that catch the reader’s attention should also be easily remembered.  Most easily remembered books are pleasant sounding to the ear, short, and unique.  Pride and Prejudice  is a good example. A bad example would be Then We Came to the End by Joshua Ferris. Nobody could remember that title. Nobody. Everyone came into bookstores asking for “The Office Book.”
  • Easily pronounced  A good title is easily pronounced because that plays a part in being easily remembered as well as how often a reader may talk about your book. This is a movie example rather than a book, but remember the Jennifer Lopez/Ben Affleck disaster that was Gigli ? That could have been the best movie in the world and it still would have flopped because no one knows how to pronounce Gigli.
  • Avoids confusion with other books Two books last year had very similar titles: “Girl on a Train” and “The Girl on the Train.” The latter was a best seller. The former was not, but got lots of sales simply by confusion. You want to choose a title which is unique from other books, unless you have a plan to draft off a super-popular book. Discoverability is a big deal, especially for self-published writers. You want people to be able to find your book, and not a book that just sounds like it.

Your title may not contain all of these characteristics, but it should at least be a combination of two or three.

Titling Nonfiction Books

good titles for essays on love

Nonfiction titles should get straight to the point of the content (this includes blog posts, articles, etc.).

For example: if you tell someone the title of your nonfiction book and they have to ask what it is about, you probably need to change the title.

If you have a great eye-catching title that doesn’t quite get to the point, consider a subtitle .

Discoverability is the “Good Title” characteristic most important for nonfiction works. Keywords are essential. You want your book to pop right up when someone types in their problem. If you want to tell someone how to plant a garden, consider titling your book, “How to Plant a Garden.”

Check to be sure that your chosen title isn’t already used because that can create unnecessary confusion and competition.

It wouldn’t surprise me if “How to Plant a Garden” is already taken, so consider adding or shifting around the words. This is also where subtitling could be considered.

Examples:

  • The Best Way to Plant a Garden.
  • Gardening Made Simple and Easy
  • 6 Steps to the Perfect Garden
  • Gardening Advice
  • The Perfect Harvest: A Step-by-Step Guide to Getting the Perfect Garden

Making the title unique without tarnishing its discoverability is probably one of the best things a nonfiction writer can do.

Dale Carnegie achieved this with his bestselling novel, “ How to Win Friends and Influence People .” This title is much less boring than “How to Be a Leader.”

Titling Fiction (Novels & Short Stories)

good titles for essays on love

Fiction differs from nonfiction in that titles should rarely get straight to the point. They instead should be mysterious and thought provoking, inducing curiosity. Fiction titles should lead a reader to pick up your book, not because they need a solution to a problem or information on a matter, but because they are curious.

Now, whether they buy or not depends on the content, but the title is what provokes them.

I also offer advice on writing the inside of your book (imagine that!).

If you want advice on novel plotting, characterization, pacing, theme or a hundred other topics, you should definitely check out my post on HOW TO WRITE A BESTSELLING NOVEL.

Click that link above to have your mind blown with novel possibilities.

Titles come in all shapes and forms.

Single words:

  • Endurance
  • Atonement
  • Allegiant
  • Nevermore
  • Boneshaker

Poetry:

  • The Fault in Our Stars
  • For Whom the Bells Toll

Famous Sayings:

  • Liberty or Death
  • Double Jeopardy
  • Till Death Do Us Part

Quotes From Within the Book:

  • To Kill a Mockingbird
  • Gone With the Wind
  • Monsters of Men
  • Their Eyes Were Watching God

Wordplay:

  • Of Mice and Men
  • Pride and Prejudice
  • I Capture the Castle
  • Sally After Sal

Opposing Subjects:

  • War and Peace
  • Love and Hate
  • Angels and Demons

There are hundreds of examples. Simply look at your favorite book and ask yourself why that title sounds interesting. Now, think of how the author might have come up with that. Use that same technique.

How to Come Up With a Title

good titles for essays on love

I am going to give you a list , but read this anyway in case you don’t like any of my ideas.

1. Brainstorm.

You are a writer. You are your own best source of creativity. Your best ideas are going to come from inside your pretty little head, so use it. Sit down and think of all the interesting titles that come to your mind. Ask yourself what your book is truly about, and give an answer in three or four words. Use lines of poetry. Use song lyrics. Use quotes from your own book. Look up title generators and, while you may not use the exact title, you can find inspiration by combining different words and such. Here’s a list of the best title generators , and they are organized by genre. Ask your friends and family for ideas. Use  every  resource available to you.

2. Write them all down.

Do this for a couple of days or until your creativity bank has run completely dry, then go back through and pick out the top ten.

3. Next, take it down to five.

Use the requirements listed under “Good Book Title” in the first portion of the article. Is it catchy? Memorable? Easy to find on the internet?

4. You have two choices at this point.

  • You can either begin asking others which title they think is best – it’s best to use an unbiased survey with people you don’t know very well who are within your target audience. (See below.)
  • Or you can scratch everything and go through steps 1 – 3 again. Some ideas for testing these titles include: Facebook polls  – Find a book group, list your titles, and see which gets the most votes. Facebook ads  – Create an ad for each title and see which gets the most clicks. Google Adwords  – Same as the Facebook ads including the use of keywords to make sure only your target audience is polled.

Rules to Remember

good titles for essays on love

  • Don’t use Identical Titles . While titles cannot be copyrighted, the same rules for using identical titles apply just about anywhere. It is  not  recommended. Don’t name your book  The Holy Bible, Harry Potter , or  The  Lord of the Rings hoping to catch some readers deceptively. If a reader stumbles across your book when searching for the other identically named book, imagine how upset they may get and what that could mean for your book’s reputation. You may not even mean to copy a title. This is why research is so important: because even if the other identically named book isn’t famous, having the same title will hurt your discoverability.
  • Stick with your genre . A book with the title of “Thy Mystery of the Blonde Lady” should be for a mystery book – not a thriller. Likewise, “The Devil’s Woods,” isn’t a very suitable title for a romance novel. Again, do  research . (I know. This is much more work than just slopping down some words on the cover of your masterpiece.) Find successful books in your genre and see what they are titled.
  • Don’t use derogatory language . You may think that adding some explicit language to your book title will add shock appeal and will do a better job at grabbing attention. It may certainly grab people’s attention, but it may not be the attention you want.  Many people become uncomfortable  because of this sort of language, and they will avoid your book specifically for this reason.  Books with titles like these will probably not get recommended as often because readers may not want to say the words out loud, admit that they are reading such a book, or have to go into a detailed explanation as to why they were reading such a book in the first place.
  • Avoid Titles with negative themes . Names such as: Why Slavery is Necessary, Racism is a Good Thing, and How Murdering My Children Set Me Free are all examples of terrible titles for obvious reasons.

The moment you’ve been waiting for. I’ve composed a list of titles that I’ve come up with over the years by using the exact same tips and rules I’ve given to you. (Sometimes, interesting titles even inspire writers to write something based around it, and how awesome is that?) Feel free to use these, but let me know because I’d love to see if any of my ideas have helped you.

Hello all, my name is Jasmine. I am a young writer and let me say, this piece helped me a ton. I am currently writing a love story, it is part fantasy, but the reality of drugs, gangs, and life tests the strength of their love. Any title ideas? Thanks!

Reality is the lie in truth? (I’m not the best at titles)

Heyyy.. there is a story out there called ‘thirteen reasons why’ .. you could go somewhere down that line .. or something like ‘love conquers reality’ .. or ‘Love shaped my future’ or … ‘tried love’ .. a few options.. sorry not the best at this kind of thing >_<

I am trying to come up with a title for a story about a young boy overcoming his negative self concept and learning to love himself.

By identifying the positive qualities within

I loved the ideas! I am a very young writer, so these really helped me! I am trying to write a book about an older teenage girl who has a gambling addict, and I thought up some ideas. I’d really like your feedback on them! “The Dealing of Poker Chips” or “The Sound Made of Nothing” If you guys have any other title ideas I’d love to hear them.

It should really be “The Dealing of Cards” but, in my book there’s a twist, so I wanted it to be poker chips instead of cards

Yes am here. Please help me to find chapter tittles for the above numbers. Thank you million times.

I hope this helps

My New Home? Good Luck!!!

Hey, I was wondering if anyone could help me come up with a name for my book. It is an adventure/fantasy book about a girl named Fern Griffin and her friend Nitza Sage. They find an underground maze in their town and a bunch of stuff happened and their are witches and dragons and stuff. There is a blade called the Snakeroot blade that takes a big part in the book and I was thinking something related to that? I don’t know, anything helps. Thanks!

Snakeroots and Secrets?

I’m writing a story about a girl who meets who she thinks is her soulmate and starts a new amazing job. Basically, her life is going great. But then her boyfriend starts acting weird and she finds out that he has been cheating. So she gets drunk, and buys a gun. She gets home and catches him in the act and shoots. The neighbors here the commotion and call the cops, she gets arrested. She then appears in court, where the reader finds out that she did not, in fact, kill her boyfriend but shot him in the arm. She is found guilty of attempted murder and the book ends there. All title ideas are welcome and criticism is greatly appreciated.

Loved No Longer Not The One Wrong Things Soulmates Hope I gave you some ideas!

Thank you so much that was very helpful but i decided to go with the title ‘Guilty’ because that is the last word in the story.

Trying to give a title to my war/romance story. A girl called Adelle Yorke gets separated from her brother Harris and their parents and she has to live with a nasty farmer and his horrible wife. They have a son, Karl Blake, who she falls in love with. They run away together to help wounded soldiers. Harris turns up and they learn that the Blake’s farm has been bombed. Karl, Adelle and Harris return to the city to Adelle and Harris’ parents house, but it no longer exists. They then search for Adelle’s parents and end up in a German camp. They manage to escape with a few other people from the camp. The group sticks together and gets smaller as people find their families. Finally only Adelle, Karl and Harris remain, still searching. The story ends there, but I may change it. Will be majorly grateful if someone could give me a few ideas. Thanks guys!

I think thats a perfect place to leave it and could it be called ‘Remember Me’ Good Luck! 🙂

I don’t know, but the searching thing seems to play a big part. However, when they go to their destinations, there’s nothing good awaiting them. What about something about searching (like ‘Searching for Nothing’ or something like that)?

Actually yeah thata much better than mine.

I’m writing a “how to” book. Guide for Creating a Saint Joseph Altar. Seems to boring. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. [email protected] Thank you Viva San Giuseppe

Well I read somewhere that St. Joseph’s colours are gold and red and that the flower that is associated with him is the lilly so you could do something to do with that. Hope this helps. 🙂

Hi, great article. So here’s the thing. My story is fantasy slash mystery revolving around a girl who finds her life trajectory change when she finds on her sixteenth birthday that she infact is one of the 12 heirs to the kingdom of Atricia. This kingdom lies hidden in the south pole and connects different parallel lands where all possible creatures that you can think exist. There is a romantic twist to it and the story line is quite humourous and light hearted but filled with unexpected turns. Any suggestions? Advices and critics are welcome too. I am a very young writer so that will be of great help. Thank you.

Hi i want help i am writing story about bad attitude so please someone help me to choose title name i think WORLD REALIZE AFTER LOST EVERYTHING is good or bad?

I personally don’t understand the ‘WORLD REALIZE AFTER LOST EVERYTHING’ but it is your book and you should go with whatever you think is right. I’m not exactly sure of what your book is about but i thought of ‘The Cost Of A Bad Attitude’ or something like that.

Looking for a powerful title for an exceptional book for the carer of someone with Alzheimers disease. Its very detailed practical and helpful advice. A reader will get to see the sufferer from a new perspective and understand his/her actions and therefore react appropriately. Much info also on where to get help etc. Its a guide, or companion but trying to go beyond the common A guide or companion for the caregiver. Thank you.

Hi, I am searching for a title for a story of my life. Basically I was raised in a children’s home from the age of 6 to 16 years with my 4 siblings whom my father paid to keep us all together. (My Mother walked out on us all for another man). My mother visited us twice in10 years and we never saw her again as she went on and had another 5 kids!. The cruelty endured at times was sadistic inhumane and cruel. I made a vow somehow that I would do good with my life. I secretly applied to go to college, got accepted, then went on to university. Eventually went in the corporate world, worked my way up to the top. Cannot think of a title, so if anyone can help with a title, I will be incredibly grateful. Many thanks J

Sparkling titles, wonderful guide

I’m writing a book with best friend not sure what to name it we have a lame title called lost in the woods but its not good enough it doesent describe our story they dont even get lost in the woods I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, just because it has nothing to do with the woods doesn’t mean it can’t be called that. The woods could stand for something, such as a crowd of people. Or, in the sense of your title, it could mean that they got into trouble way bigger than they are.

Thank you for this thought-provoking list of titles. I will research as you said, to see if they’ve already been used. I design custom and pre-designed book covers.

I’m just a beginner l now where to start compiling a suitable title for my book thank you 💝 this is a superb

Hi – I am putting together a “coffee table” type book of a collection of my deceased brother’s art. His focus was ceramics of all kinds – wheel, raku, hand thrown, sculpture, etc., and also water colour paintings. I have written a short bio of his life leading up to his career as the head of the art fundamentals department of a college, but the book is mostly pictures of his work which collectors have in both Canada and the United States. The ideas and suggestions on this site are great, but if anyone would like to throw out a thought or two I would be delighted.

How do you find this title and subtitle:

The Rise of Ninja Gods

How Is Covid-19 Changing The World?

THANK Y0OU FOR THE IDEAS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, I suppose that no one will see this, but I’m willing to try anyways. I’m planning on writing a book about A police officer roped into supernatural happenings. The MC is the supernatural “hunter.” I’m fresh out of ideas, and it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

“Unlikely Hearts: A Love Story in the Making”

“Love’s Unforeseen Path: Embracing the Unexpected”

“Falling into You: A Tale of Serendipitous Romance”

Thanks for this page. Thought of many potential titles for my anthology. Decided on “Smashing walnuts and other existential pleasures” because everything else was too pompous/boring/twee/done before, etc. The words “Smashing walnuts” is in a poem in the book. Silent Light on Sapphire, the next best option would put you to sleep I think. Please advise. Thanks

Writing Strong Titles

by acburton | Apr 25, 2024 | Resources for Students , Writing Resources

You’ve finished your paper, and all that’s left is your title. What do you name the essay you’ve just worked tirelessly on, for days, sometimes even weeks to put together? Should it be long or something shorter? Should you prioritize grasping your readers attention or encapsulating the major themes of your essay? These are all questions that the Writing Center is here to help with!

First Things First: Why Do We Need Titles?

Titles serve as the first point of contact between readers and your written work. They serve to inform readers about what your work will be about and clarify how it is relevant to others’ work or research. All of these things work to engage readers, compelling their curiosity and interest!

What Approaches Can I Take to Create Effective and Engaging Titles?

1. Hook Your Reader

Students often start with this consideration when working to formulate the title of their paper. To ‘hook your reader’, think about what you find most interesting about your own research and something new or enticing that you will be sharing. Convey this to your reader.

2. Keep it Concise, but Make it Informative

An essential aspect that works alongside ‘hooking’ your reader is making sure that your title is concise. While “one-part” titles can prioritize being creative or descriptive (check out our example below!), “two-part” titles, those that may use a colon to present two parallel ideas, can run the risk of being too long to grasp and hold your reader’s attention. A good rule of thumb is to aim to keep your “two-part” titles no longer than two lines. Whichever you choose, either “one part” or “two part”, you’ll want to be sure that your title serves as one method for your reader to predict what your paper will be about. While you don’t want to give everything away, your title shouldn’t be too far off from what your paper will demonstrate.

3. Consider Your Audience

Much like you did when writing the work that you are now striving to title, consider your audience. The words and phrases you choose to incorporate should be reflective of the discipline you are writing for and should not include terminology that, whoever may be reading it, won’t be able to grasp. Contemplate if using more general language would be more effective for your reader (especially if your work may be attractive to readers outside of your discipline) or if more precise or specific language is more appropriate for your goal (e.g., an academic publication or journal).

4. Incorporate Keywords

One of the simplest ways to get started on your title is by incorporating keywords. Think about it; what does your work focus on? What terms are being used often? How are they being used (e.g., in comparison or in contrast to other terms)? Incorporating keywords into your title not only serves to provide you a great place to start, but can also help get your work to a wider audience! Take the time to think about how you might get your work to show up in search engines when curious readers want to know more about a subject.

5. Reflect the Tone of Your Writing

Depending on the genre or discipline, your title should aim to follow the style, tone, or slant of the work it precedes. For example, if you are writing non-scholarly work for the Humanities, you may find that a more lighthearted, fun, or inventive title may work for the topic at hand. In contrast, STEM papers may focus on using specific language, or a tone that lets the reader know that their work is contemplative, veracious, or, in other words, no laughing matter. Take note, again, of your audience and what it is that you want your reader to feel or take away as they navigate your writing.

Below, you’ll see how these considerations work alongside your decision to create those one or two-part titles discussed earlier.

For a Compelling, Thoughtful Title, You Might Try…

A “one-part” title that prioritizes either..

  • Example: “ RENT’ s Tango With Your Emotions”
  • Example: “An Analysis of Modernism in Larson’s Melodramatic Musical”

STEM papers or reports traditionally have a descriptive title. Creative projects, like short stories, often have creative titles.

A “two-part” title:

  • Creative Introductory Clause: Descriptive, Specific Topic
  • Example: “RENT’s Tango With Your Emotions: An Analysis of Modernism in Larson’s Melodramatic Musical”

Although seen much more often in STEM writing, scholarly work in the Humanities, Arts, or Social Sciences may have a two-part title.

How Do We Format Essay Titles?

Formal titles follow Title Case Formatting ; this type of formatting includes capitalizing the first word, the last word, and every significant word in between. For example:

  • T ransgressive T ekken : P layer E xpression and P articipatory C ulture in the K orean B ackdash

Helpful Hint!

To write stronger titles, avoid starting with a question. While this may draw your reader in, it may also leave them feeling disinterested in reading further to find the answer. Similarly, avoid exaggerating your work through your title. Be honest with your reader on what to expect going forward. The Messages That

good titles for essays on love

Led to Love

Illustrations by Tara Booth

Getting to know someone used to take many forms: handwritten letters, phone conversations, in-person heart-to-hearts. Today, we text. We slide into D.M.s. Dating apps and social media have made it effortless to start a conversation. Still, it can be hard to know what exactly to say . We asked readers of the Modern Love column to share the early messages — the banter, emojis and wit — that made them fall for each other. — Kate LaRue

The texts below are from real threads that have been carefully excavated (screengrabbed) from the phones of readers. They’ve been lightly edited — and reanimated — for clarity and your enjoyment.

1. They started simple

good titles for essays on love

We started unremarkably, with a lot of awkward Heeeeeyyyys back and forth. But it turned into something truly amazing some months later. My dad was in hospice, and Bil (now my husband) was determined to make me laugh for even one second. He got a tattoo to match my avatar — a badly taxidermied sassy bobcat — and made that tattoo his avatar. You just have to see it.

2. They found common ground

good titles for essays on love

We were married a year later. She’s a Presbyterian minister; I’m “unchurched.” What could go wrong? Yet our core values aligned. Early on, we agreed: Cherish our differences and don’t try to change each other. I imagined meeting a “granola girl.” She imagined meeting a “preacher man.” It turned out just the opposite.

3. He showed his sinister side

good titles for essays on love

New to dating apps, I put on my profile that I was a witchcraft historian! His response was perfect — I was excited that not only did he have a sense of humor, he also knew (accurate!) esoteric details, and was keen to chat! We met up right away, and he told me about the time he stayed at a satanic murderer’s Airbnb. After I lost my phone (he thought I ghosted him), we finally saw each other again weeks later for a last-minute late-weeknight screening of “Clueless” at the Metrograph and fell in love. And now, we just got engaged!

4. She told an edgy ‘Mom’ joke

His best friend has a YouTube channel that I had been following for a while. He would often appear in the videos, and I always thought he was cute and funny. When his profile came up on my Hinge, I knew I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. I was very bold when first messaging him because I knew we had very similar humor.

5. She switched up the status

He was a handyman referred to me during the pandemic by a neighbor. I opened the door with unbrushed hair and while wearing pajamas. He seemed during that lonely time to be the prettiest thing I had ever seen, and I wanted to close the door again, so that I could pull myself together. I found thousands of dollars of work for him to do in my house over the next three months. When I ran out of projects and hadn’t seen him for a few weeks, I had no alternative but to ask him out.

6. They served cheese

good titles for essays on love

I met Zeke on Bumble. Our exchange was brief, quickly moving to texting and setting up our first date. When he responded to my comment “sounds gouda” with the pun “brie you soon,” I was hooked. My ex used to criticize my use of language, complaining that I sounded old-fashioned and corny. Zeke has helped me feel comfortable in my voice again. We’re getting married next April, and I’m eager to spend my life cheesily ever after with someone who melts my heart.

7. She planned aggressively

good titles for essays on love

Patrick and I connected on Bumble in 2017, both seeking to brighten a challenging grad-school winter with some fun dates. After a few minutes of texting and never having met, I sarcastically joked that we get a place together in Washington postgraduation, never suspecting that we would do just that, eight months later. Since then he has brought endless light to bumpy job transitions, a dark pandemic and a bold cross-country move to Seattle. He makes boring Monday nights spark. Now we’re bassinet shopping for our best adventure yet, arriving in August.

8. He gave out an award

good titles for essays on love

Reed messaged me on Grindr at the beginning of the semester after he was my student in a lecture. He didn’t attend the smaller discussion groups that I led, so I didn’t know him. His profile was blank except for his height. Flattered, I engaged with him after his message, then we met a month later for a study date. Weeks later, we went on a few formal dates. Months later, we began dating.

9. She confessed

I knew I wanted my husband shortly after we met through a college club. My initial wooing strategy of sending riddles and memes over Messenger didn’t yield much. My suggestions of studying together ended in disappointment when he wanted to actually study. Finally, I broke down and confessed my feelings in the most awkward way possible. He responded in kind. It turned out he had a crush on me too but hadn’t realized I was flirting with him. Eight years later, he still “supports” my having made the first move.

10. They sent geese

good titles for essays on love

We’re both autistic, and he specifically did not know how to initiate conversations, flirty or not. Our first interactions were only memes about the video game Untitled Goose Game. We’ve been living together for three years and will be getting married in May 2025. We still laugh about the goose memes!

11. She shared poetry

We were first-day-of-freshman-year friends, co-presidents of our dorm. Raj: reticent, mysterious, poetically brooding (in the way any lean college boys who don’t talk about themselves appear to the hopeful female gaze). Me: an oversharer with a bad crush who did 75 percent of the texting and always wanted him to read my writing. Frequent 3 a.m. philosophy conversations. My 4 a.m. disclosure: “I like like you!” (He didn’t reciprocate.) Seven years later (after college, work and other relationships), he did.

12. He Told Her About Cucumbers

good titles for essays on love

This is us working out where to meet for our first date in London during Covid. We had our first meal together shivering on the terrace of the restaurant. We quickly formed a bubble and later moved in together. Three years on, lockdown seems so long ago, and we now have a little boy (who, unlike his dad, really likes cucumber).

13. They bantered

good titles for essays on love

Our first exchanges happened over text while Jesse was driving across the country. Our texts got longer and longer as we nerded out about obscure music, travel and our work. It wasn’t flirting, exactly, but there was a lot of rapid-fire witty banter, and it felt really exciting. We were both confused about whether this was the start of a romance or a friendship. It still wasn’t clear after we hung out a couple of times in person — were they dates? We didn’t know. Things eventually took a romantic turn, and now we laugh about those early confusing days.

14. Is soup a meal? They discussed.

good titles for essays on love

It’s rare to find someone who agrees that soup is not a meal, so I had to reply to his prompt. We met for cheese curds on our first date, and by the second I knew that this relationship would stick. Four years and a pandemic later, we’re married. Our feelings about soup haven’t changed, and whether soup is a meal continues to be a topic of debate with our friends.

15. He deployed cat memes

good titles for essays on love

Once a year, Josh would come into the store I worked at to shop. We would spend a few hours together, and once he left, life went on and I just knew I would see him the following year. This went on for 8 years. Two years ago we finally exchanged phone numbers. Lighthearted texts turned into deeper conversations and we found ourselves in a texting-only relationship for many months. We opened up to one another in a way that would have been impossible in person.

16. She went long. Waaaaaaay long.

good titles for essays on love

I went on 100 dates in 100 days just before the pandemic. Postpandemic I went on that many more (in about a year). When I saw Johnson’s profile, I knew immediately he was the person I was looking for. I’m not from his culture, so he didn’t think he was meeting his forever person beforehand, but we met the next day, and it was instantly clear to both of us that the connection was palpable. It was like finding soul family. We’ve since visited eight countries, I’m learning Mandarin and we are very much in love.

Detroit Lions got better. So did the NFC North, now home to three tantalizingly young QBs.

good titles for essays on love

The Detroit Lions swept the NFC North two years ago. Last season, they went 4-2, sweeping the Vikings while splitting with the Packers and Bears.

This season, the black and blue division could be even tougher. At the very least, there is more talent, especially young talent, especially at quarterback.

At the moment, it's still projection, though not in Green Bay, where Jordan Love led the Packers to a 6-2 finish during the regular season, a beatdown in Dallas in the wild card round, and a near upset in San Francisco in the divisional round.

Green Bay is young. Matt LaFleur is a creative coach. Love looks like a serious keeper. The Packers drafted a promising tackle in the first round to help protect him, along with some defensive pieces as they switch their scheme from a 3-4 to a 4-3 under new coordinator Jeff Hafley.

The last time the Lions saw Green Bay was on Thanksgiving , and the outcome wasn’t pretty. Love made several turn-your-head throws, a few on the run, against an overmatched secondary and a defensive line unable to consistently pressure him.

The Lions spent the last three days addressing their secondary . They added more muscle up front. Even so, expect the battles with the Packers to be intense, fourth-quarter games, and for more season-series splits; the Packers are here.

JEFF SEIDEL: Lions keep adding Alabama football flavor to organization. It's not by accident

The Bears are coming. Maybe not next season — it's hard to win with a rookie quarterback, though it can be done; hello there, C.J. Stroud — but if Caleb Williams, the most naturally gifted quarterback to come into the league since Patrick Mahomes, finds his footing as a rookie, watch out.

It’s not preposterous to think it could happen. Stroud may have been the best rookie quarterback in years, but he isn’t the only rookie who has excelled immediately.

Brock Purdy balled as a rookie, and if not for a shoulder injury in the first quarter of the NFC title game in Philadelphia in 2023, he might have led the 49ers to the Super Bowl.

As it happened, he got them there this past season. I assume we don’t need to catalog the details of how it unfolded.

Williams, like Purdy did and, for that matter, like Stroud did, will be joining a team with some interesting pieces. The Bears weren’t a contender before Williams as the 49ers were before Purdy, still, the defense is solid, and the wide receiver room will be among the best in football.

D.J. Moore already was in that room ahead of the draft. So was Keenan Allen, who arrived via trade from the Los Angeles Chargers in mid-March. To that collection of pro-bowl level pass catchers comes Rome Odunze, whom the Bears drafted with the ninth overall pick Thursday night.

Chicago also added former Lions running back D’Andre Swift in the backfield and returns tight end Cole Kmet, who is coming off a career year.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS: During the NFL draft and beyond, core life values drive Lions GM, says Brad Holmes' mom

The Bears beat the Lions in Chicago last fall without half of these skill players and with Justin Fields at quarterback. They were feisty for most of the season and won four of their last six games. Their head coach, Matt Eberflus, is a defensive-minded fella and he brought in a new offensive coordinator to help sort out all the new toys.

Williams could struggle, as many rookie quarterbacks do, and the threat of a Chicago surge would dissipate. Betting against it, though, is no sure bet. At minimum, the Bears will almost certainly be difficult to play, as they were last season.

Now they are more talented.

As for Minnesota?

They’ve got a new quarterback, too. How good J.J. McCarthy will be is the question . Yet, like Williams, he’ll be joining a team with serious skill play: Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson. Defensively, the Vikings are often tricky and opportunistic, and they added Alabama’s promising edge rusher, Dallas Turner, in the draft.

Minnesota also signed Sam Darnold as a free agent. Presumably to take a little pressure off McCarthy, who didn’t throw the ball at the clip his fellow first-round quarterbacks did for their college teams.

Still, McCarthy has big arm talent, above-average mobility, and some spark to his game and presence. If it takes him a moment to earn the starting job, that won’t be the worst thing in the world. If it doesn’t, and he shows he’s ready, the Vikings will be difficult to sweep again.

Even if it’s Darnold leading the huddle when the Lions are on the schedule, Jefferson and Co. will be difficult to deal with. Nick Mullens, you’ll recall, threw for 411 yards on Christmas Eve last year and had the ball in his hands with a chance to win the game.

Ifeatu Melifonwu picked off Mullens with 49 seconds to play to secure the win, and the Lions’ first division title since 1993. This year, the safety will have help in the secondary after Brad Holmes signed two corners in free agency and drafted two more.

The Lions will need that help to navigate through a more talented division. Sure, the talent is young, particularly at quarterback, but teams can rise in a hurry in this league.

And while the Lions look better on paper after productive free agent signings and a promising draft, the NFC North looks better, too.

"I can see it heading that way for sure,” said Holmes. “It's hard (not) to make an argument for it now. You know, in terms of ... those guys got some good players.”

“We've got some good players, too.” he said, “but, yeah, this is going to be a good division. Obviously, you kind of saw last year (with) some of the guys in the division making some surges.”

Holmes expects everybody’s best this fall after coming within four points of a Super Bowl. The Lions are among the buzziest of teams, rightly so, yet buzz can act as fuel for rivals within a division. So can talent.

Which means the division is about to get tougher, perhaps a lot tougher, sooner rather than later, even if the Vikings are a few seasons away. And if they take a leap, we might be looking at the best division in the game.

“We’ll be ready,” said Holmes.

He and the Lions will need to be. The NFC North is getting fun.
