5 best Netflix biopics to watch right now

Real people get the spotlight in these great biographical movies

Woman with popcorn bowl holding remote to watch Netflix on television

Netflix has dominated the biopic market for quite a while. Between dramatized movies of well-known figures, little-known moments in history, and true crime, there are plenty of real-life events and figures to draw from. Though Netflix originals have made a splash in the past decade, the streaming site also boasts a number of blockbuster biopics that fans are still talking about years later.

Many biopic movies are adapted from primary or secondary sources, like Maestro and Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. So while these movies are fictionalized to some extent, deriving them from reliable accounts helps add a moderate level of authenticity. However, it’s best to take these movies with a grain of salt and do research before taking them too seriously. Here are some of the best biopics on Netflix you can stream right now.

The Imitation Game

The 2014 movie The Imitation Game takes viewers back to 1939. The film focuses on Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch): a mathematical genius tasked with breaking seemingly uncrackable Nazi codes for M16 (a British intelligence agency). Kiera Knightley also stars in the movie as Joan Clarke, Turing’s fellow analyst.

On top of tackling the brutality of Nazi Germany, there’s an LGBTQ+ component to the film that sheds light on the homophobia of the time period. Many people might not realize that Hitler went after LGBTQ+ and disabled individuals along with the Jewish population. This particular story points out that criminalizing identities didn’t end when the war did — not even in Britain. - XH

Maestro is Bradley Cooper's return to the director's chair ( if he believed in such things ) following the smash success that was A Star Is Born. In this biopic, Cooper also stars as the acclaimed American conductor/composer/multihyphenate Leonard Bernstein.

While the movie is certainly an examination of Bernstein's life, it's largely about Bernstein's relationship with his wife Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan). Maestro has been nominated for four  Golden Globe awards  including nominations for Cooper and Mulligan's performances, so don't miss it now that it's free on Netflix. - MM

This biopic centers on Bayard Rustin, the architect of the momentous 1963 March on Washington — where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I have a dream” speech. Yet, Rustin was relegated to a footnote in history, mostly due to his homosexuality. As the activist, Colman Domingo gives a fiery performance that will likely draw many accolades during awards season.

The film chronicles how Rustin conceives and plans the largest nonviolent protest in the United States, joining forces with King (Aml Ameen) and other civil rights moment leaders like A. Philip Randolph (Glynn Turman) and Rep. Adam Clayton Powell Jr. (Jeffrey Wright). - KW

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Netflix original Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom marked Chadwick Boseman’s last film — and it didn’t disappoint. Viola Davis plays Ma Rainey alongside Boseman’s Levee in this movie that centers on a recording session with Rainey and her band.

The 1927 movie spans one single day as blues singer Rainey records the song the film is named after. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom illustrates the insidious 1920s racism in both the music industry and society as a whole. Glynn Turman (Toledo), Colman Domingo (Cutler), and Michael Potts (Slow Drag) also star in the George C. Wolfe-directed movie. August Wilson wrote the original play that Ruben Santiago-Hudson adapted into the movie. - XH

Decades after giving up marathon swimming, 60-year-old Diana (Annette Bening) decides to take on an epic challenge that always eluded her: the 110 mile trek from Cuba to Florida, often referred to as the Mount Everest of swims.

This list represents the best of Netflix’s movie offerings, and it starts with a new rotating critic’s pick of the week.

This Week’s Critic’s Pick

Year: 1995 Runtime: 2h 19m Director: Ron Howard

Ron Howard directed this beloved 1995 historical drama about the dangerous space mission that nearly killed three American astronauts. Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton star as the space travelers with a great cast joining them on the ground, including Oscar nominee Ed Harris. Nominated for a total of nine Oscars, including Best Picture, this is movie people still watch over 25 years later.

How We Pick Our Films

Critic Brian Tallerico watches and writes about movies and TV every day. To curate this list, he dives into Netflix’s catalogue to surface acclaimed, surprising, or otherwise noteworthy titles — using his taste and a lifetime of cinema study as his guide, instead of whatever the algorithm happens to be pushing. After triple-checking to make sure they’re still available, he watches each, organizes them by category, then writes his recommendation. We highlight more than just Oscar winners or popcorn flicks: These films present interesting ideas, made an impact on cinema, and changed our culture. Read on to find something to watch.

*Born on the Fourth of July

Year: 1989 Runtime: 2h 24m Director: Oliver Stone

In 1986, Oliver Stone tackled what it was like to be in country in his personal Platoon , and only three years later he followed up with a story about what it was like to come home from Vietnam in the story of Ron Kovacs. Tom Cruise does arguably the best work of his career in this powerful deconstruction of patriotism and examination of the human cost of war. It’s even better than you remember.

Devil in a Blue Dress

Devil in a Blue Dress

Year: 1995 Runtime: 1h 41m Director: Carl Franklin

Carl Franklin wrote and directed one of the most underrated Denzel Washington performances of all time in this 1995 adaptation of the novel of the same name by Walter Mosley. Washington plays Easy Rawlins, a World War II vet in 1948 who gets drawn into a mystery that classic noir filmmakers would have adored. Charming and riveting, the only crime here is that there wasn’t a whole franchise of films with Washington playing Easy.

Glengarry Glen Ross

Glengarry Glen Ross

Year: 1992 Runtime: 1h 40m Director: James Foley

For a long time, it felt like David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1984 masterpiece was unfilmable, but Foley, working with the playwright as screenwriter, figured it out, assembling one of the best ensembles of the ‘90s to do so. Alec Baldwin notoriously steals his one scene, but the entire cast here is a stunner, especially Al Pacino (who was Oscar-nominated), Alan Arkin, and Jack Lemmon.

Film and Television

*Inside Man

Year: 2006 Runtime: 2h 8m Director: Spike Lee

Yes, Spike Lee once made a great action movie. The director of Do the Right Thing and Da 5 Bloods put his spin on the heist film with this great 2006 Denzel Washington vehicle. The regular collaborator plays an NYPD hostage negotiator, called in when a bank heist goes down on Wall Street. Tight and effective, this is just further evidence that Spike Lee can nail any kind of movie he chooses to make. This might be Lee’s most underrated movie. It hums.

L.A. Confidential

L.A. Confidential

Year: 1997 Runtime: 2h 17m Director: Curtis Hanson

Curtis Hanson directed this adaptation of James Ellroy’s epic crime novel of 1950s Los Angeles. Starring Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe, Kevin Spacey, and Kim Basinger, it’s a perfect thriller and one of the best movies of the ‘90s. So many films since this one have tried to mimic the tough-talking thrills of it and fallen completely flat. It’s harder than it looks to be this cool.

moneyball

Year:  2011 Runtime:  2h 13m Director:  Bennett Miller

One of the best baseball movies ever made was adapted from the 2003 book by Michael Lewis, which recounts the management of the 2002 season of the Oakland Athletics, and how they changed the way the game is run by bringing analytics into the mix. Brad Pitt gives one of his best performances as general manager Billy Beane, a man who knew he would have to find a new way to evaluate talent if the A’s were going to compete. This is a rich, smart, riveting movie that’s extra-interesting given what the Oakland franchise is going through in 2024.

May December

Year: 2023 Runtime: 1h 57m Director: Todd Haynes

Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman star in the latest from Carol and Far from Heaven director Todd Haynes, a stunning character study of an actress who discovers that some people are impossible to figure out. Portman plays a star who tries to get under the skin of Moore’s character, a woman who raped a child when she was a teacher, and later married that young man. Charles Melton is phenomenal as the now-grown victim, stuck in perpetual adolescence.

The Nest.

Year: 2020 Runtime: 1h 47m Director: Sean Durkin

A victim of the pandemic, this was one of the best films of 2020. Carrie Coon and Jude Law star as a married couple with two kids who move from New York City to London in the 1980s and watch as the divides in their union start to widen. A great character study amplified by Durkin’s sharp visual language, this is a fantastic domestic drama, and the best movie on this list that you probably haven’t seen.

The Novice.

Year:  2021 Runtime:  1h 36m Director:  Lauren Hadaway

Isabelle Fuhrman is stunning in this drama about a young woman who becomes obsessed with her performance on the university rowing team. Sort of a variation on the committed intensity seen in  Whiplash , it’s a drama that plays almost like a thriller, and it earned five Independent Spirit nominations, including Best Film and Best Director. Don’t miss this one.

The Power of the Dog

The Power of the Dog

Year: 2021 Runtime: 2h 6m Director: Jane Campion

The film that finally won an Oscar for Jane Campion for directing is one of the most acclaimed in the history of the streaming giant. Campion helmed this adaptation of the novel of the same name by Thomas Savage, the story of a vicious landowner (Benedict Cumberbatch) who torments the new wife (Kirsten Dunst) of his brother (Jesse Plemons). A drama that plays like a thriller, this gorgeously rendered period piece unpacks themes of toxic masculinity and manipulation in a way that makes it impossible to turn away. It’s not just one of the best Netflix Original films, it’s one of the best, period, of the 2020s so far.

Whiplash-4868.cr2

Year: 2014 Runtime: 1h 46m Director: Damien Chazelle

Chazelle may still be startled by the divisive response to last year’s Babylon, but he can go back to the near-universal praise for the film that really broke him, earning one of its stars an Oscar and getting a nomination for Best Picture. Damien Chazelle’s drama about a perfectionist drummer and his militaristic teacher thrilled viewers from the minute it premiered at Sundance. It was a major piece of pop culture, a film that feels like it’s being referenced more every year.

Matt Dillon And Kevin Bacon In ‘Wild Things’

*Wild Things

Year: 1998 Runtime: 1h 48m Director: John McNaughton

A classic of the B-movie sleazy thriller era, this is actually a deeply underrated movie, a flick that works from old-fashioned noir and even Greek tragedy to tell the tale of two teenagers (Neve Campbell, Denise Richard) who get caught up in a scheme with a slimy teacher played perfectly by Matt Dillon. It’s remembered most for its sex factor, but this is a clever flick, a movie that plays with class and privilege in fascinating ways.

Everything Everywhere All at Once

Everything Everywhere All at Once

Year: 2022 Runtime: 2h 19m Directors: The Daniels

After a brief stint on Amazon Prime, this is the first Netflix drop for the 2023 Best Picture winner, a movie that defies categorization as it tells a story of alternate realities and butt plugs. A film that debuted at SXSW, this daring piece of work built an audience through 2022 until it won multiple Oscars, including Best Picture and Director. It’s like nothing else. Anywhere.

*Baby Driver

Year: 2017 Runtime: 1h 53m Director: Edgar Wright

It’s a little harder to watch this movie now given the allegations against some of its cast members , but it’s still a remarkably well-made piece of action filmmaking, the kinetically unforgettable story of a getaway driver who knows all the best tunes. Ansel Elgort, Jamie Foxx, and Lily James may be the stars of this movie, but it’s Wright’s showmanship that really steals the spotlight.

KILL BILL, Uma Thurman, 2003, (c) Miramax/courtesy Everett Collection

Year: 2003 Runtime: 1h 50m Director: Quentin Tarantino

We will still have to wait for the long-promised full cut of the two Kill Bill films into one epic movie (and the long-rumored third volume of this tale), but that shouldn’t stop you from revisiting two of Quentin Tarantino’s best films — both volumes are on Netflix now. In a catalog that includes a lot of great performances (and a few Oscar winners), one of QT’s best is Uma Thurman as The Bride, a legendary action character seeking vengeance on the man who betrayed her.

Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park

Year: 1993 Runtime: 2h 6m Director: Steven Spielberg

An instant classic when it was released in 1993, Steven Spielberg’s dinosaur blockbuster spawned a franchise that’s still humming almost three decades later with the 2022 release of the wildly successful Dominion . The first three films in the series, including Spielberg’s sequel The Lost World , are on Netflix right now, alongside the pretty fun Camp Cretaceous.

The Matrix

*The Matrix

Year: 1999 Runtime: 2h 16m Director: The Wachowskis

Neo and the gang returned to HBO Max in late 2021 with The Matrix Resurrections , and the response was predictably divisive. You know what’s not divisive? The fact that the first movie still absolutely rules. The story of an average guy who learns that nothing is what it seems has influenced so much pop culture in the over-two decades since this movie was released. You can see Neo everywhere. (And you can watch the entire original trilogy on Netflix now.)

good biography movies on netflix

Year: 2003 Runtime: 2h Director: Park Chan-wook

It’s hard to explain to people how this movie moved through the film-loving world before Film Twitter was a thing. Recently restored for its 20th anniversary, Oldboy has now been dropped on Netflix again, and it’s lost none of its searing power. It’s the tale of a man who is kidnapped, and its genius is that it’s not a whodunit as much as a whydunit, forcing viewers and protagonists to wonder about a truly grisly motive until the final unforgettable act.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Year:  2023 Runtime:  2h 20m Director:  Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson

What a gift to Netflix subscribers for this to already be on the service, mere weeks after playing in theaters and landing on Blu-ray. This is how you do a big-budget blockbuster sequel, developing the themes of the first movie and setting up the stake for what now appears will be one of the best trilogies in superhero history. You’ll know all their names soon enough.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Year: 1975 Runtime: 1h 29m Director: Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones

During a hiatus between the third and fourth seasons of Monty Python’s Family Circus , the gang of mega-talented comedians decided to make movie history. Inspired by the King Arthur legend, Holy Grail is a timeless comedy, the rare kind of film that will still be making people laugh hundreds of years from now. And while the Monty Python boys were already famous, this film took them to another level, cementing their place in movie history.

Pineapple Express

Pineapple Express

Year: 2008 Runtime: 1h 52m Director: David Gordon Green

Seth Rogen gives one of his best performances as Dale Denton, an average guy who just wants to get high. He visits his dealer (played perfectly by James Franco) on the wrong night as the pair cross paths with hitmen and a police officer on the wrong side of the law. This is an incredibly funny movie, and you don’t need to be high to love it.

School Of Rock - 2003

School of Rock

Year: 2003 Runtime: 1h 49m Director: Richard Linklater

Richard Linklater directed Jack Black to the best comedy of his career in this movie about a guitarist who becomes a substitute teacher at a prep school and teaches the stuck-up kids there how to rock. It’s a smart, funny family comedy with a huge heart and one of Black’s most truly wonderful performances.

Step Brothers

Step Brothers

Year: 2008 Runtime: 1h 37m Director: Adam McKay

The pinnacle of Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s comedy career remains this modern classic, a movie that’s as rewatchable as anything you could possibly find on any streaming service. One of the reasons for that is the fearless joy with which Ferrell and John C. Reilly literally throw themselves into the roles of stepbrothers who start as enemies and end as family.

The Babadook

The Babadook

Year:  2014 Runtime:  1h 33m Director:  Jennifer Kent

One of the best horror films of the 2010s has not been widely available for streaming subscribers so take the chance to watch it again while it’s on Netflix. Jennifer Kent’s directorial debut centers on a mother (Essie Davis) who struggles to raise her problem child alone after the death of her husband. Oh, and there’s also a real monster in the boy’s room.

Gerald's Game

Gerald’s Game

Year: 2017 Runtime: 1h 43m Director: Mike Flanagan

Before he helmed The Haunting of Hill House , Mike Flanagan co-wrote and directed one of the best Netflix Original horror films in this adaptation of Stephen King’s 1992 novel of the same name. Carla Gugino is phenomenal as a woman who gets handcuffed to her bed by her toxic husband…and then he has a heart attack. As she tries to figure out how she will survive, she accesses the trauma of her past.

Split.

Year: 2016 Runtime: 1h 57m Director: M. Night Shyamalan

James McAvoy gives the best performance of his career in what’s widely considered M. Night Shyamalan’s comeback film. He plays a kidnapper who happens to have many personalities, and the most dangerous one of all is on its way. The script kind of falls apart, but this is an impressive performance platform for McAvoy, who gives it his all, and then some.

For Kids & Family

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

Year: 2022 Runtime: 1h 56m Director: Guillermo del Toro, Mark Gustafson

The Oscar-winning director took his visionary skills to stop-motion animation with this instant classic, a retelling of the beloved fairy tale about the wooden boy who longed to be real. With spectacular voice work, this version reimagines Pinocchio during the period before World War II, allowing del Toro to explore his themes of innocence and violence again. It’s a deeply personal, beautiful film.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

Year: 2023 Runtime: 1h 42m Director: Joel Crawford

No one would have predicted that the presumed-dead Shrek franchise had another spin-off sequel of this caliber yet to be released, but December 2022 saw the critical and commercial success of arguably the best film in the entire series. Using a style more reminiscent of Into the Spider-verse than typical DreamWorks, The Last Wish is a gorgeous and surprisingly moving story of the title character dealing with something he never expected to face: mortality. It’s funny, clever, and memorable.

WENDELL & WILD

Wendell & Wild

Year: 2022 Runtime: 1h 46m Director: Henry Selick

The director of A Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline finally returned this year with this clever and twisted tale co-written by Oscar winner Jordan Peele. The comedian also co-stars as one of the title characters, the literal demons for a girl who blames herself for the death of her parents. Selick is a master of stop-motion animation and this project allows him to stretch his visual prowess in new, gross ways. It’s a new Halloween classic (that can be watched any time, of course!)

The sheer volume of films on Netflix — and the site’s less than ideal interface — can make finding a genuinely great movie there a difficult task. To help, we’ve plucked out the 50 best films currently streaming on the service in the United States, updated regularly as titles come and go. And as a bonus, we link to more great movies on Netflix within many of our write-ups below. (Note: Streaming services sometimes remove titles or change starting dates without giving notice.)

Here are our lists of the best TV shows on Netflix , the best movies on Amazon Prime Video and the best of everything on Hulu and Disney Plus .

‘Kill Bill: Vol. 1’ (2003) / ‘Kill Bill: Vol. 2’ (2004)

Quentin Tarantino spent six years making his follow-up to “Jackie Brown,” and he ended up shooting enough material for not one, but two movies. They’re best seen together, in old-school, grindhouse double-feature form, allowing Tarantino to spin this globe-trotting yarn about a retired assassin (a fierce and furious Uma Thurman) who hunts down the former colleagues who left her for dead on her wedding day. Paying loving tribute to the exploitation movies of multiple eras and cultures, Tarantino dabbles in kung fu, anime, spaghetti western and blaxploitation, deliriously hopping styles like a movie-crazy kid swapping out VHS tapes. But in all the pyrotechnics, he maintains his gift for quotable dialogue and charismatic characters, ending his blood-soaked saga on a surprisingly warm and human note. Watch ‘Vol. 1’ here and ‘Vol. 2’ here on Netflix

‘Melancholia’ (2011)

The first half of this “ excursion from the sad to the sublime by way of the preposterous” is a virtuoso portrait of social awkwardness and inappropriateness, as a bride (a stunning Kirsten Dunst) struggles and fails to overcome her crippling depression at her wedding reception. Her family and friends are an assemblage of human triggers far more distressing to her than the crisis of the second half, in which it’s learned that a rogue planet is on a collision course with Earth, and our protagonist discovers that when you’ve spent your life feeling like the world is ending, the event itself can produce a strange calm. The writer and director Lars von Trier (“Breaking the Waves”) tells this dark story with bleak humor and operatic flourishes, as well as a deep empathy for the women at its center. (For more of Dunst, stream “ The Beguiled ” and “ All Good Things .”) Watch on Netflix

‘Role Models’ (2008)

The raw edge yet soft heart of this wildly funny bad-boy comedy, and the presence of the frequent leading man Paul Rudd, might lead you to assume it’s the work of Judd Apatow. But the roots of “Role Models” go back farther than that — the director is David Wain, one of the minds behind the comedy troupe the State — and several of its members (including Kerri Kenney-Silver, Joe Lo Truglio and Ken Marino) turn up in supporting roles. Rudd and Seann William Scott star as a pair of irresponsible energy drink salesmen who are ordered to perform community service, and wind up in a Big Brother-type program, mentoring a foul-mouthed kid and a cosplaying nerd.

Watch on Netflix

‘The Hunger Games’ (2012)

Jennifer Lawrence stars as Katniss Everdeen, a resourceful teenager who volunteers to compete in the decadent, dangerous televised title event, in which teens engage in blood sport to entertain the rich. The film series hadn’t quite found its footing in this initial outing, but it contains much of what makes the movies memorable — the tense action sequences, the striking costume and production design and especially Lawrence’s tough, muscular work in the leading role. (Netflix is also streaming the sequels “ The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ,” “ The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 ” and “ The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 .”) Watch on Netflix

‘Wild Things’ (1998)

The impressive 1990s run of erotic thrillers was nearly at its end when the director John McNaughton (“Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer”) directed his entry into the subgenre, which gleefully revels in the sordidness of its story while also slyly winking at its conventions — he has his sleazy cake and eats it too. Denise Richards became a star via her hubba-hubba turn as a rich bad girl who accuses a teacher (Matt Dillon) of assault, a charge echoed by a tough young woman from the wrong side of the tracks (Neve Campbell, turning her “Scream” image inside out). But that’s just the setup; the clever script is filled with reverses, reveals and double-crosses, resulting in a trashy delight that is equal parts Hitchcock and Cinemax After Dark. (For an earlier version of the erotic thriller, try Clint Eastwood’s “ Play Misty for Me .”)

‘A Single Man’ (2009)

The fashion designer turned filmmaker Tom Ford made his feature directorial debut with this moving, melancholy (and, unsurprisingly, aesthetically stunning) adaptation of the novel by Christopher Isherwood. An Oscar-nominated Colin Firth stars as George, a college professor and “bachelor,” as gay men in his era were so often euphemistically known. Accompanying George through one long, difficult day — the anniversary of the death of his boyfriend — Ford burrows deep into the tortured psyche of his protagonist, and Firth is up to the challenge, playing the role with what Manohla Dargis called “ a magnificent depth of feeling .” Watch on Netflix

‘Inside Man’ (2006)

Spike Lee is the heir apparent to Sidney Lumet as New York’s most reliable hometown filmmaker, so it only makes sense that he would eventually work his way around to a homage to Lumet’s sweaty-city classic, “Dog Day Afternoon.” In Lee’s variation, Clive Owen is a cool and confident bank robber who’s interested in something much more valuable than money; Denzel Washington is at his smooth-talking movie-star best as the brilliant police hostage negotiator who’s trying to beat the criminal and the clock. Watch on Netflix

‘The Matrix’ (1999)

When this mind-melting hit from the Wachowskis landed in theaters in the spring of 1999, its shock waves reverberated throughout the filmmaking of the new millennium. Adroitly combining elements of dystopian science fiction, Asian action cinema, anime and cyberpunk, it concerns a dissatisfied hacker (Keanu Reeves) who learns that reality is an illusion and the mentors (Laurence Fishburne and Carrie-Anne Moss) who lead him on that journey. It is among the most imitated of blockbusters of the past quarter-century, but none have matched its relentless energy and narrative dexterity. (For more stylish ’90s action, watch “ Léon: The Professional .”) Watch on Netflix

‘Molly’s Game’ (2017)

The Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin made his feature directorial debut with this brisk and intelligent adaptation of the memoir by Molly Bloom, who ran secret poker games for the obscenely wealthy until she got in too deep with the Russian mob. Jessica Chastain stars as Bloom, and her icy cool demeanor and rapid-fire delivery make her an ideal Sorkin heroine. Idris Elba stars as her lawyer, and the two of them perfect a rat-tat-tat back-and-forth that, at its best, recalls Hepburn and Tracy. It’s an engaging picture, filled with solid performers and smart dialogue.

‘Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby’ (2006)

Will Ferrell re-teamed with his “Anchorman” co-writer and director, Adam McKay, for this goofy sports comedy, which features Ferrell playing another self-assured blowhard surrounded by sycophants. This time, that character is Ricky Bobby, a NASCAR superstar whose life of high speeds and lucrative endorsements comes to a crashing halt. It’s as broad and silly as his and McKay’s previous collaboration, but it also hints at McKay’s later pivot to social commentary (he was a multiple Oscar nominee for “The Big Short”). McKay sets this story in the so-called Red States, and subtly subverts both the conventional wisdom about that world and about those it sees as outsiders. To do all of that, while landing so many solid laughs, is no small accomplishment. (McKay, Ferrell and his co-star John C. Reilly would re-team for “ Step Brothers ,” also on Netflix.) Watch on Netflix

‘American Graffiti’ (1973)

Between his debut feature “THX 1138” and the seismic sensation of “Star Wars,” George Lucas made a pit stop in the genre of coming-of-age comedy-drama with this teen-centered smash, which he co-wrote and directed. Set entirely on the last night of high school, circa 1962, “Graffiti” tells several stories of seniors standing on the precipice of “real life,” and not sure where to go next. The prescience of the casting is stunning — it’s filled with soon-to-be-stars, including Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford, Ron Howard, Paul Le Mat, Mackenzie Phillips, Suzanne Somers and Cindy Williams — the period music is delightful and the one-crazy-night vibes are immaculate. (If you like comedy and cars, check out “ Smokey and the Bandit ” and “ Baby Driver .”) Watch on Netflix

‘Bodies Bodies Bodies’ (2022)

The set-up is a familiar one: a group of highly attractive and wildly irresponsible young people are isolated in a remote location, where they begin turning up dead, one by one. But the director, Halina Reijn, isn’t just cranking out another “Friday the 13th” ripoff; this contemporary thriller-comedy is less interested in a high body count than a biting satire of contemporary narcissism. Sarah DeLappe and Kristen Roupenian’s savvy screenplay has a keen ear for the therapy-speak and personal branding of today’s 20-somethings, while the first-rate ensemble uses its considerable charisma to make their characters fascinatingly repellent; the “Shiva Baby” and “Bottoms” star Rachel Sennott and the “S.N.L.” fave Pete Davidson are the standouts. Watch on Netflix

‘National Lampoon’s Animal House’ (1978)

This wild blockbuster launched the film career of John Belushi, the “slobs vs. snobs” comedy subgenre and the mainstream aspirations of the subversive humor magazine National Lampoon. Following a pair of misfit fraternity pledges (Tom Hulce and Stephen Furst) through their first semester at Faber College in 1962, the randy screenplay by Harold Ramis, Douglas Kenney and Chris Miller wonders if perhaps that last year of American innocence wasn’t so innocent after all. A deliriously funny rampage of food fights, toga parties, horse abductions and wrecked parades ensues, with the director John Landis engagingly orchestrating the chaos and Belushi stealing every possible scene as the frat’s resident party animal. (For more wild comedy, try “ Fletch ” and “ The ’Burbs .”) Watch on Netflix

‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ (2022)

The impressive haul of Academy Awards accumulated by this indie smash — best picture, best actress Michelle Yeoh, best supporting actor Ke Huy Quan, best supporting actress Jamie Lee Curtis and best directors and original screenplay to Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, known collectively as the Daniels — make it sounds like some kind of awards-bait prestige picture. It’s anything but; this is a madcap mixture of every genre under the sun, in which a harried laundromat owner (Yeoh) unlocks the “multiverse,” and the various lives she is living simultaneously within it. It’s an “ exuberant swirl of genre anarchy ,” A.O. Scott wrote, in which the multiverse conceit allows the Daniels to make several movies (madcap comedy, martial-arts extravaganza, tender relationship drama, science fiction dreamscape), well, all at once. Watch on Netflix

‘She’s Gotta Have It’ (1986)

Spike Lee helped launch the ’90s indie movement and a renewed interest in Black cinema, to say nothing of his own durable career, with this, his feature debut. Lee writes, directs, edits and memorably co-stars as Mars Blackmon, one of the three men vying for the physical and emotional attention of Nola Darling (Tracy Camilla Johns), a Brooklyn graphic artist who has decided not to settle for any one suitor. The picture’s low-budget seams occasionally show, and its sexual politics are occasionally out of date (particularly in the third act). But the cinematic energy, fierce comic spirit and unflinching realism of Lee’s best work is already on display in this formative effort, which also inspired a Netflix series adaptation . (For more romantic drama, stream “ Love & Basketball .”) Watch on Netflix

‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ (1992)

David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, about real estate salesmen and the desperate measures they’ll take to keep their lousy jobs, was adapted into one of the most potent pictures of the ’90s, thanks to the brute force of Mamet’s dialogue and one of the most remarkable ensemble casts of the era: Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Ed Harris, Alec Baldwin, Kevin Spacey, Jonathan Pryce and Alan Arkin . It’s something of a profanity-laden counterpart to “Death of a Salesman,” its scorched-earth monologues and inventive insults providing the flashy surface to a melancholy indictment of empty capitalism and toxic masculinity . Our critic called it “a movie for which everybody deserves awards .” Watch on Netflix

‘Dumb & Dumber’ (1994)

The Farrelly brothers made their film debut — and Jim Carrey had his third hit in a single year, solidifying his status as a comedy star — with this buddy comedy smash. Carrey and Jeff Daniels star as Lloyd and Harry, two absolute doofuses who get mixed up in a kidnapping and ransom plot. The jokes are beyond broad, the slapstick is downright painful, and the vulgarity pushes the limits of the PG-13 rating considerably. But it’s all done with such manic energy and gonzo bravado that you can’t help but laugh, and Carrey’s and Daniels’s take-no-prisoners performances are uproarious and inspired. Watch on Netflix

‘Devil in a Blue Dress’ (1995)

Denzel Washington is terrific — smolderingly sexy, offhandedly funny, endlessly engaging — as Ezekiel “Easy” Rawlins, a ’40s-era private detective, in this beautifully crafted adaptation of Walter Mosley’s novel, from the director Carl Franklin (“One False Move”). Yet even with that great performance at its center, Don Cheadle steals the show as “Mouse,” Rawlins’s troublemaking best friend; this was Cheadle’s breakthrough role, and he makes every scene crackle with energy and unpredictability. “Devil” was based on the first of Mosley’s series of 16 Rawlins novels (to date), and in a just world, we’d have seen Washington play him 15 more times. But at least we got this one. Watch on Netflix

‘The Florida Project’ (2017)

The director of “Tangerine,” Sean Baker , returns with another warm and funny portrait of life on the fringes, melding a cast of nonactors and newcomers with an Oscar-nominated Willem Dafoe as the manager of a cheap Orlando motel populated by confused tourists and barely-managing families. The script (by Baker and Chris Bergoch) captures, with startling verisimilitude, the anxieties of living paycheck to paycheck (particularly when the next paycheck’s very existence is uncertain) while also borrowing the devil-may-care playfulness of the children at the story’s center. Our critic called it “ risky and revelatory .” (“ Roma ” is a similarly complicated coming-of-age story.) Watch on Netflix

‘Train to Busan’ (2016)

This white-knuckle zombie-apocalypse thriller from the South Korean director Yeon Sang-ho, set onboard a train hurtling toward possible safety, is a fantastic entry into the “relentless action in a confined space” subgenre (recalling “Snowpiercer,” “The Raid,” “Dredd” and the granddaddy of them all, “Die Hard”). The set pieces are energetic, the makeup effects are convincing, and the storytelling is ruthless. (Don’t get too attached to anyone.) But it’s not all blood and bluster; there’s a patient, deliberate setup before the orgy of gore and mayhem, leading to a surprising outpouring of emotion at the story’s conclusion. Our critic deemed it “ often chaotic but never disorienting ” and praised its “spirited set pieces.” (For more South Korean cinema, try “ Okja ” or “ Oldboy .”)

‘Jurassic Park’ (1993)

Steven Spielberg’s gripping adaptation of the best seller by Michael Crichton is both a terrifying thriller and a thoughtful commentary on the moral challenges of scientific advancement. Richard Attenborough stars as a wealthy industrialist who has figured out how to isolate and reanimate dinosaur DNA; Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum are the scientists he invites to marvel at the fruits of his labor, until a power outage during their tour turns the whole expedition upside down. The special effects are still eerily convincing, the performances are quirky and compelling, and Spielberg mines his big set pieces for maximum tension. A.O. Scott recently deemed it “ scary, scrappy and marvelously executed .”

‘Apollo 13’ (1995)

There’s no greater testament to the skill and craft of Ron Howard than the fact that he manages to build (and sustain, for two-plus hours) tension and suspense around an event with a widely known outcome. That event is the Apollo 13 lunar mission in 1970, intended to be the third manned landing on the moon but aborted after a mechanical failure that put the lives of its three astronauts in jeopardy. Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton project credible professionalism in those roles, finding the proper, fleeting moments to let their understandable fear and frustration blast through; an Oscar-nominated Ed Harris is brilliant as the flight director on the ground, marshaling the minds tasked with bringing their boys home. (Howard’s “ Parenthood ” is also on Netflix.)

‘Erin Brockovich’ (2000)

Julia Roberts won the Academy Award for best actress — and Steven Soderbergh solidified his status as one of Hollywood’s great contemporary journeyman directors — with this ruthlessly intelligent yet undeniably crowd-pleasing drama, based on a true story. Roberts plays the title character, a tough-as-nails single mom in deep debt who talks her way into a nothing job at a law firm, only to become the key investigator in a horrifying case of corporate malfeasance. Albert Finney (himself nominated for an Oscar) is terrific as her seen-it-all boss. Our critic praised the picture’s “ offbeat pacing ” and “sharp sense of visual detail.” (Other Oscar winners on Netflix include “ Born on the Fourth of July ,” “ Out of Africa ” and “ Darkest Hour .”)

Two animated chickens look on in surprise as a hatchling’s foot pokes through an egg.

‘Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget’ (2023)

Aardman Animations’s high-spirited and rambunctious sequel to “Chicken Run” (2000) pulls off the tricky sequel balancing act of recapturing the magic of the original without resorting to outright, beat-by-beat imitation. Here, the lives of the chief chickens in the story are disrupted when Molly, the daughter of Ginger and Rocky, slips away from their idyllic island paradise and ends up trapped in the impenetrable fortress of a food factory. “Last time, we broke out of a chicken farm,” says Ginger. “Well, this time, we’re breaking in. ” So instead of the escape adventures that inspired the original film, “Dawn of the Nugget ” is riffing on heist movies, and cleverly; it’s impeccably designed and detailed, the laughs are plentiful and the voice performers are clearly having a ball.

‘ May December’ (2023)

As with so much of his best work, this “sly, unnerving” latest from the director Todd Haynes positions itself precariously in that hair’s breadth between drama and melodrama, between naturalism and camp. Natalie Portman, gamely satirizing actorly pretension, stars as a TV actress cast in an indie film dramatizing the scandalous relationship between a 36-year-old wife and mother and a seventh grade boy. Decades have passed, and the couple is still together, so the actress embeds in their hometown to observe them up close. Haynes winks at the “ripped-from-a-true-story” aesthetics of TV movies and indies, but he takes these people and their rampant narcissism seriously; between the broad comic beats, he finds moments of stealth, emotional brutality and piercing insight. It’s a sharp, funny, merciless movie. Watch on Netflix

‘Blazing Saddles’ (1974)

Mel Brooks concocted one of his rudest, brashest, funniest comedies with this Western spoof, in which railroad bosses try to clear out a tiny town by appointing an African-American sheriff (Cleavon Little). Brooks and his team of ace comedy writers — including a young Richard Pryor — adopted an “everything but the kitchen sink” approach, throwing in broad slapstick, sophisticated social satire, cheerful vulgarity, witty wordplay and fourth-wall breaks. As a result, there’s something for everyone — and, most likely, something to offend everyone. Gene Wilder lends able support as the hard-drinking, quick-drawing Waco Kid, but Madeline Kahn steals the show as the vampy saloon performer Lili Von Shtupp. (For more classic comedy, try “ Richard Pryor: Live in Concert ” or “ Beverly Hills Cop .”)

‘Uncut Gems’ (2019)

Josh and Benny Safdie have all but singlehandedly kept the tradition of the grimy New York street movie alive in the 21st century , with films like “Heaven Knows What” and “Good Time” explicitly recalling the sweaty desperation of ’70s Gotham cinema. Their latest is also their best, featuring a career-high performance from Adam Sandler as a diamond dealer and inveterate gambler whose eternal quest for one big score puts his livelihood — and his very life — on the line. Manohla Dargis called it a “rough and glittering thing of beauty .” (The much earlier, much sillier Sandler vehicle “ Happy Gilmore ” is also on Netflix). Watch on Netflix

‘Stamped From the Beginning’ (2023)

The Oscar-winning documentarian Roger Ross Williams adapts the National Book Award-winner by Ibram X. Kendi into a thought-provoking rumination on the myths and realities of American history. Diving into the knotty legacies of Blackness, whiteness, and white supremacy, Williams brilliantly and incisively juxtaposes archival materials with contemporary insights from an array of scholars, authors and activists. The brisk, 91-minute running time leaves little room for throat-clearing; the results are blunt, provocative and pointed. (Ava DuVernay’s “ 13TH ” is a similarly stimulating exploration of these themes.)

‘Rustin’ (2023)

Bayard Rustin was not the most famous figure of the 1963 March on Washington — that was the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who delivered one of the most quoted pieces of modern oratory at its climax — but Rustin dreamed it up and made it happen. He was a fascinating figure, a driven civil rights organizer who was also openly gay (at a time when that was, to put it mildly, frowned upon) former Communist (ditto). “Rustin” wisely takes its cues from Selma , centering on a single, earth-shattering event, rather than attempting to summarize an entire life from cradle to grave. The director, George C. Wolfe, bracingly gets into the weeds, compellingly dramatizing the logistics of organizing, recruiting and raising both money and awareness for an event of this magnitude. And Colman Domingo, a valuable utility player for years now, shines big and bright in the “ galvanic title performance .” (Wolfe’s adaptation of “ Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom ” is also on Netflix.)

‘L.A. Confidential’ (1997)

James Ellroy’s sparse yet stylish crime novel became one of the best neo-noir thrillers of our time in the hands of the director and co-writer Curtis Hanson (“Wonder Boys”). Set in the razzle-dazzle of 1950s Los Angeles, this “ tough, gorgeous, vastly entertaining throwback ” is a blisteringly good mystery, featuring framed-up murders, dirty cops, shady tabloid reporters, and crooked politicos. But this isn’t just a good yarn; Hanson understands (as Ellroy did before him) that this is a story about the roots of corruption in the Los Angeles Police Department, and beyond. Guy Pearce and Russell Crowe (both mostly unknown at the time) are the standouts as the diametrically opposed police detectives — one brains, one brawn — who become unlikely partners. Kim Basinger provides the love interest. (For more of Crowe and Basinger, stream “ The Nice Guys ”; for more crime drama, try Martin Scorsese’s “ The Irishman .”)

‘Boyz N the Hood’ (1991)

John Singleton’s debut film burned with the kind of energy and intensity that only a first-timer can produce — the feeling that they may not get another shot, so they’re making this one count. Singleton’s heartfelt story of growing up in the Crenshaw section of Los Angeles netted him Academy Award nominations for best original screenplay and best director (he was both the youngest-ever nominee in the latter category, and its first African-American), and launched not only his career, but those of several cast members, including Cuba Gooding Jr., Ice Cube, Angela Bassett, Morris Chestnut, Nia Long and Regina King. Our critic praised Singleton for “ saying something familiar with new dramatic force , and in ways that a wide and varied audience will understand.”

‘I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore’ (2017)

This wildly out-of-the-box dark comedy plays, at first, like the sly story of an amateur sleuth: Our heroine (Melanie Lynskey), frustrated with the indifference of the police to the crime against her, hits pawn shops and confronts criminals to recover her laptop and her grandmother’s silver. But as she gets in over her head, the film’s tone subtly shifts into a key closer to that of a thriller, particularly when we meet the perpetrators, who are scarily small time (and thus have nothing to lose). Such stark tonal contrasts could sink a lesser movie, but the actor-turned-director Macon Blair never loses control, and the increasingly panicked reactions of the marvelous Ms. Lynskey to her escalating situation keep the story grounded in something resembling the real world. It’s a strange little movie, but an oddly satisfying one.

‘The Wailing’ (2016)

What begins as a “Memories of Murder”-style police procedural veers into darker, wilder territory in this unnerving and occasionally stomach-churning horror thriller from the writer and director Na Hong-jin. Jong-goo (Kwak Do-won) is a policeman whose investigation of a string of grisly killings is influenced by the gossip around him: “All this happened,” he is told, “after that Japanese man arrived.” When his family is drawn into the investigation, Jong-goo discovers exactly what he’s capable of — and then things get really horrifying. The expansive 156-minute running time allows leisurely detours into character drama and bleak humor, but the picture never goes slack; there is something sinister in the air of this village, and Na builds that sense of inescapable dread with patience and power. (For more South Korean drama, stream “ Burning .”) Watch on Netflix

‘A Walk Among the Tombstones’ (2014)

It’s a real shame that Liam Neeson had already burned off the good will of his third-act man-of-action career resurgence with too many “Taken” sequels and retreads by the time this taut thriller hit theaters — because it’s far superior to any of his other pictures of the time. That’s partly thanks to the personnel; it’s based on one of a series of crackerjack novels by Lawrence Block, and adapted and directed by Scott Frank (who would later perform the same duties on “The Queen’s Gambit”). But Neeson is also at his best, imbuing cop-turned-private-eye Matthew Scudder with a mixture of soulful regret, unwavering faith and righteous indignation.

‘Jackie Brown’ (1997)

Quentin Tarantino crafted his follow-up to “Pulp Fiction” as a valentine to two of his key influences: the author Elmore Leonard, whose novel “Rum Punch” was the source material (it’s Tarantino’s only adapted screenplay to date), and the ’70s exploitation movie legend Pam Grier, for whom he reworked the leading role of a flight attendant caught between a gunrunner, the F.B.I. and the A.T.F. It has all the hallmarks of a Tarantino picture: memorable and musical dialogue, playful construction, eccentric supporting characters and a throwback aesthetic. But its aging protagonists — not only Grier but also Robert Forster’s seen-it-all bail bondsman — lend the picture a maturity and gravitas that can elude even Tarantino’s best work.

‘School of Rock’ (2003)

Before the miniboom of decidedly adult-oriented filmmakers trying their hands at family entertainment (Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo,” Wes Anderson’s “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” Todd Haynes’s “Wonderstruck”), the “Dazed and Confused” director, Richard Linklater, and the “Enlightened” creator, Mike White, joined forces to tell this story of a slacker musician who uses his prep-school substitute teaching gig to turn a class of fourth-graders into a rock band. White’s script is clever without being cute, and Linklater’s direction is engaged but unobtrusive. The biggest draw, though, is Jack Black in the starring role, one seemingly designed to show off his simultaneous gifts for broad comedy and hard rocking. It’s a warm, winning, endlessly funny performance. (For more family fun, try “ Paddington ” and “ Storks .”)

‘Silver Linings Playbook’ (2012)

Jennifer Lawrence won the Oscar for best actress for her spectacularly sassy and unapologetically haunted performance in David O. Russell’s (somewhat loose) adaptation of Matthew Quick’s novel. It’s a balancing act of seemingly contradictory tones and styles, slipping nimbly from serious mental-health drama to screwball comedy to romance, thanks to the deceptive casualness of Russell’s approach and the skill of his cast — particularly Bradley Cooper as its unsteady protagonist and Robert De Niro and Jackie Weaver (all also Oscar nominees) as his parents. Our critic called it “ exuberant ” and “a delight.” (Cooper is excellent in “ The Mule ”; Lawrence also shines in the rowdy comedy “ No Hard Feelings .”) Watch on Netflix

But in all the pyrotechnics, he maintains his gift for quotable dialogue and charismatic characters, ending his blood-soaked saga with on a surprisingly warm and human note. Watch ‘Vol. 1’ here and ‘Vol. 2’ here .

‘The Sting’ (1973)

Few onscreen pairings have conveyed affection and camaraderie as effortlessly as that of Paul Newman and Robert Redford, and they easily recaptured the magic of “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” in their second onscreen collaboration (again under the guidance of the “Cassidy” director George Roy Hill). Set in the 1930s, this sparkling, comedic con caper finds our handsome heroes mounting a giant operation to swindle a corrupt banker (Robert Shaw), all to the ragtime sounds of Scott Joplin’s piano. There are turns and reversals aplenty, along with endless charm. (For more classic comedy, try “ Richard Pryor: Live in Concert .”) Watch on Netflix

‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio’ (2022)

This new twist on the classic tale from the Oscar-winning del Toro (who co-directed with Mark Gustafson) is, to be clear, not for the tiny ones — it’s set in Fascist-era Italy and takes several period-appropriate dark turns, while exploring the running theme of the inevitability of death. But older kids, not to mention imaginative adults, will find much to embrace here. The voice performances are terrific (with Ewan McGregor, Christoph Waltz and Tilda Swinton the standouts), the set pieces are jaw-dropping (particularly the staggering whale sequence) and the stop-motion animation is gorgeously detailed, an appropriate match of subject and form — the film itself looks as lovingly handcrafted as Geppetto’s woodwork.

‘High Flying Bird’ (2019)

The director Steven Soderbergh reunites with Andre Holland, his co-star from “ The Knick ,” for this rarest of beasts: a sports movie without any sports. The screenplay by Tarell Alvin McCraney is instead about the business of professional athletics, set during an N.B.A. lockout in which a high-powered agent (Holland) attempts to use the shutdown to turn the entire league — and all of the presumptions and hierarchies of organized sports — upside down. McCraney’s script is rich with historical references and inside-basketball shout-outs; Soderbergh’s direction is reflexively nimble, using on-the-fly photography and interviews with real N.B.A. players to give the film a sense of documentary immediacy. A.O. Scott called it “ an exhilarating and argumentative caper .” (Spike Lee’s “ Da 5 Bloods ” is a similarly thrilling mixture of genre film and social commentary.)

‘Descendant’ (2022)

When the remains of the Clotilda, the last known ship to bring enslaved Africans to the United States, were discovered off the shore of Mobile, Ala., in 2019, it was physical evidence of a long-told piece of local lore — an illegal operation, long after such ships were outlawed, five years before emancipation. So this amounted to the excavation of a crime scene, prompting a giant question for the descendants of those victims: What does justice look like? Margaret Brown’s spellbinding documentary asks that question, which opens up many more thornier conversations about history, complicity and legacy. Our critic called it “ deeply attentive ” and “moving.” (Documentary lovers will also enjoy “ What Happened, Miss Simone? ” and “ Sr. ”) Watch on Netflix

‘The Imitation Game’ (2014)

Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley star in this Oscar-nominated biopic about the British mathematician Alan Turing, who went to work as a German code-cracker in World War II and, in the process, created a machine that many consider the first incarnation of the modern computer. Cumberbatch adroitly conveys the tortured brilliance of Turing, who helped save his country, and was later prosecuted by it for his homosexuality. The efficient direction by Morten Tyldum captures the immediacy and intensity of its subject’s work, yet cleverly folds in his later mistreatment as tragic counterpoint. “The Imitation Game” never quite explodes the conventions of the big-screen biopic, but it’s a sleek, well-made example of the form. (For more Oscar-nominated drama, try “ Fried Green Tomatoes ” or “ Living .”)

‘Glass Onion’ (2022)

The writer and director Rian Johnson follows up his Agatha Christie-style whodunit hit “Knives Out” with this delightfully clever comedy-mystery, featuring the further adventures of the world’s greatest detective, Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig, still outfitted with neckerchiefs and a deliciously Southern-fried accent). Johnson constructs a “classic detective story with equal measures of breeziness and rigor ,” again focusing on the haves and have-nots, as a gang of rich pals (including Kate Hudson, Leslie Odom Jr., Dave Bautista and Kathryn Hahn) meet up on the isolated island of a Silicon Valley millionaire (Edward Norton). Janelle Monáe, not unlike Ana de Armas in the original, steals the show as the interloper who’s not what she seems. Watch on Netflix

‘Emily the Criminal’ (2022)

The thumbnail summary — “Aubrey Plaza becomes a thief” — conjures up a bone-dry comedy in which her deadpan persona creates ironic friction with the criminal underworld. But “Emily the Criminal” isn’t that movie at all; it’s a “ chilly, assured thriller ,” a Michael Mann-ish procedural with nary a wink in sight, and it absolutely (albeit surprisingly) works. The writer and director John Patton Ford creates moments of real tension while also giving what feels like an insider’s view of this world of thieves and hustlers. And if Plaza’s turn as a deep-in-debt temp worker trying her hand at life on the margins sounds like novelty casting, think again — she’s spectacular. (For more indie drama, try “ Whiplash ” and “ To Leslie .”) Watch on Netflix

‘Marriage Story’ (2019)

Noah Baumbach’s searing, Bergman-esque drama is the story not of a marriage, but of its end — of a loving couple who just, as they say, grew apart, but whose uncoupling is nowhere near that organic. Their shifting of priorities and geographic preferences prompts the hiring of lawyers, the spending of savings, and the stating of old resentments and regrets better left unsaid. Baumbach’s screenplay is full of tiny, human touches and graceful tonal shifts; he can move from screwball comedy to open-wound drama in the blink of an eye. “It’s funny and sad , sometimes within a single scene,” writes A.O. Scott, “and it weaves a plot out of the messy collapse of a shared reality, trying to make music out of disharmony.” (Baumbach’s “ The Squid and the Whale ” and “ The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) ” are also on Netflix.)

‘Miss Juneteenth’ (2020)

Of all the films that would have been sleeper hits, had they not been released in 2020 when a theatrical push was off the table, it’s hard to top this, the debut feature from the writer and director Channing Godfrey Peoples. Nicole Beharie stars as Turquoise Jones, a Texas single mother whose 15-year-old daughter (Alexis Chikaeze) is about to compete in the local Miss Juneteenth pageant that Turquoise won, once upon a time. Peoples’s screenplay sensitively explores poignant questions of opportunities lost and gained, and the mother/daughter dynamics are convincing and compelling. But the real takeaway here is Beharie, whose marvelous, lived-in performance is both inspiring and shattering.

‘Phantom Thread’ (2017)

The writer and director Paul Thomas Anderson reunited with his “There Will Be Blood” star Daniel Day-Lewis for this strange, beautiful, darkly comic romantic fable. Day-Lewis stars as Reynolds Woodcock, a fictional fashion designer in 1950s-era London; Vicky Krieps is Alma, his latest mistress and muse. He meets her as a waitress and believes her to be yet another disposable lover — only to find that he has, at long last, met his match. Gorgeously rendered and thrillingly acted, “Phantom Thread” initially seems like another portrait of a great and tortured artist, only to curdle into something more insightful (and peculiar). A.O. Scott deemed it “ funny, wrenching, full of large and small surprises .” (For more period drama, queue up “ Mudbound ” and “ Crimson Peak .”)

‘The Lost Daughter’ (2021)

The actor-turned-filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal writes and directs this adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s novel, starring Olivia Colman as a professor on vacation whose strained interactions with a large, unruly American family — particularly a young, stressed mother (Dakota Johnson) — send her down a rabbit hole of her memories, a switch-flip intermingling of past and present. There is a bit of back story to untangle, which turns the film into something like a mystery. But “The Lost Daughter” is mostly noteworthy for its willingness to explore the darkest moments of parenthood, the horrible feeling of giving up and longing for escape. Colman brings humanity and even warmth to a difficult character, while Jessie Buckley beautifully connects the dots as her younger iteration. Our critic calls it “a sophisticated, elusively plotted psychological thriller.” (The Gyllenhaal vehicle “ The Kindergarten Teacher ” is similarly unnerving.) Watch on Netflix

‘The Power of the Dog’ (2021)

“I wonder what little lady made these?” Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch) asks about the paper flowers created by Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee) — the first indication of the initial theme of Jane Campion’s new film, an adaptation of the novel by Thomas Savage. Phil is a real piece of work, and when his brother and ranching partner George (Jesse Plemons) marries Peter’s mother, Rose (Kirsten Dunst), it brings all of Phil’s resentment and nastiness to the surface as he tries, in multiple, hostile ways, to exert his dominance and display his dissatisfaction. That tension and conflict would be enough for a lesser filmmaker, but Campion burrows deeper, taking a carefully executed turn to explore his complicated motives — and desires in this film of welcome complexity and unexpected tenderness; Manohla Dargis called it “ a great American story and a dazzling evisceration of one of the country’s foundational myths.”

‘Passing’ (2021)

“She’s a girl from Chicago I used to know,” Irene (Tessa Thompson) says of Clare (Ruth Negga) — a statement that is accurate on the surface but that contains volumes of history, tension and secrets. Irene and Clare are both light-skinned Black women who have made different choices about how to live their lives, but when they reconnect, they are both prompted to reckon with who, exactly, they are. The screenplay and direction by Rebecca Hall (adapting Nella Larsen’s 1929 novel) delicately yet precisely plumbs their psychological depths and wounds, and the sumptuous costumes and immaculate black and white cinematography serve as dazzling counterpoints to what Manohla Dargis called “ an anguished story of identity and belonging .” Watch on Netflix

‘American Factory’ (2019)

Documentary filmmakers have long been fascinated by the logistics and complexities of manual labor, but Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert’s recent Oscar winner for best documentary feature views these issues through a decidedly 21st-century lens. Focusing on a closed GM plant in Dayton, Ohio, that’s taken over by a Chinese auto glass company, Bognar and Reichert thoughtfully, sensitively (and often humorously) explore how cultures — both corporate and general — clash. Manohla Dargis calls it “ complex, stirring, timely and beautifully shaped, spanning continents as it surveys the past, present and possible future of American labor.” (Documentary fans should also seek out “ The Life and Death of Marsha P. Johnson ,” “ Dick Johnson is Dead ,” and “ Procession .”) Watch on Netflix

Aaron Sorkin's Molly's Game is a tour de force of drama and wit, taking us deep into the world of high-stakes poker. Jessica Chastain embodies Molly Bloom with an intensity that burns up the screen, portraying a woman whose intellect and courage draw us into her crazy world. This narrative, rich with legal battles and moral quandaries, showcases Sorkin's signature dialogue at its best, making the labyrinth of the legal system and the poker underworld riveting. With Idris Elba and Kevin Costner delivering capturing performances, the film becomes an intricate study of survival in a world that plays for keeps.

The Theory of Everything (2015)

Eddie Redmayne's portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything is not just an acting feat that won an Oscar—it's a transformation that brings the renowned physicist’s journey to life with breathtaking depth. Directed by James Marsh, the film orbits around Hawking's relationship with his wife Jane, played by Felicity Jones, capturing their triumphs and heartaches against the infinite backdrop of Hawking’s groundbreaking theories. The movie stands as a testament to love’s power to transcend the ordinary and reach the edges of the universe.

Wild Things (1998)

Drenched in the sultry heat of Florida, Wild Things concocts a potent cocktail of seduction, deceit, and double-crossing. Directed by John McNaughton, this thriller lures you into a labyrinth where Kevin Bacon, Matt Dillon, Neve Campbell, and Denise Richards play characters wrapped in a complex web of motives. Each twist in the plot is a deliciously deceitful turn, unraveling a story where everyone has something to hide. It's a wild ride into the darkest corners of human desire, where trust is a currency spent at one's peril, making every revelation a shock to the system.

You’ve Got Mail (1998)

Nora Ephron's You've Got Mail offers a delightful jaunt through the early days of internet romance, where Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan find love in the most unexpected of inboxes. This film ultimately serves a love letter to New York, to books, to the idea that true connections can form in the digital age. Ephron’s genius lies in her ability to craft a story that is as timeless as it is charming, weaving together wit, heart, and a little bit of serendipity, proving that in the vast web of the internet, two souls can find each other.

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006)

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby , directed by Adam McKay and starring Will Ferrell, revs up the comedy engine to full throttle, delivering a hilarious parody of NASCAR culture. Ferrell's Ricky Bobby, with his "win at all costs" mantra, finds his life thrown into a tailspin by Jean Girard, a flamboyant French racer played by Sacha Baron Cohen. The film serves as a riotous, hilarious, low-key interesting exploration of when friendship, ego, and the American Dream collide—doused in high-speed crashes and fueled by an unapologetic love for fast cars and faster laughs. It’s a comedic masterpiece that captures the absurdity of its subject matter with every lap.

Smokey and the Bandit (1977)

Smokey and the Bandit cruises down memory lane, bringing the thrill of the chase to life with Burt Reynolds’ undeniable charm as the Bandit. This film is a joyride that celebrates the spirit of adventure, of camaraderie, of the open road. Directed by Hal Needham, it pits the cunning Bandit against Jackie Gleason’s unforgettable Sheriff Buford T. Justice in a cross-country pursuit that’s as much about the journey as the destination. With Sally Field adding heart and humor, this classic encapsulates a bygone era of car culture, making every viewer yearn for the days when all it took to be a hero was a fast car and a faster wit.

How to Be Single (2016)

How to Be Single dives into the heart of New York City's dating scene, with Dakota Johnson's Alice leading a cast of characters through the highs and lows of love and life in the big city. This isn’t just a romantic comedy—it’s a journey through the complexities of relationships in the modern age, where being single is just another part of the adventure.

With Bruce Willis, James McAvoy, and Samuel L. Jackson reprising their roles, the film delves deep into the psyche of its characters, crafting a narrative that is as intellectually stimulating as it is viscerally thrilling. Shyamalan weaves together themes of identity, belief, and the nature of power, culminating in a climax that defies expectations.

The 7 Best New Movies on Netflix in April 2024

From “How to Be Single” to “Scoop”

Gillian Anderson and Rufus Sewell in "Scoop" (Netflix)

Just like April showers bring May flowers, April’s Netflix slate brings some fresh pickings to watch and stream no matter what moods viewers have. For those in the romantic comedy spring where love blossoms, Netflix has films like “Knocked Up” (2007), “How to Be Single” (2016), “You’ve Got Mail” (1998) and more. Animated adventures for the whole family include “The Land Before Time” (1988), the first two “Hotel Transylvania” films and “Space Jam: A New Legacy.”

More serious matters can be found in “The Matrix” (1999), “Molly’s Game” (2017), “Scoop” (2024), and “The Theory of Everything” (2014). Plenty of options—both film and television—can enhance your Earth Day celebration and raise awareness of the climate crisis. Several documentaries about other subjects are also headed to the streamer this month.

Here’s a curated list of the best new movies on Netflix in April:

“How to Be Single” (2016)

Dakota Johnson in "How to Be Single" (2016)

Come for “Madame Web” star Dakota Johnson, and stay for the silly but heartwarming romantic comedy “How to Be Single” (2016). Johnson’s main character, Alice, wants to discover who she is on her own without her partner Josh (Nicholas Braun), but she quickly realizes that she truly enjoyed being in their relationship. She takes an adventure through the wild dating scene of New York alongside Alison Brie’s Lucy and her sister Meg (Leslie Mann), who have their own various obstacles to overcome in finding true love.

The raunchy humor in “How to Be Single” is underlined by genuine characters who make an argument that love does exist and that there is hope for all of us. The rest of the ensemble cast is pretty stacked as well: Damon Wayans Jr., Anders Holm, Jake Lacy Colin Jost, Jason Mantzoukas, and more. Plus, Rebel Wilson adds her signature comedy to the chaotic, crazy and compassionate film, soundtracked by Fifth Harmony, Charli XCX and Hailee Steinfeld. “How to Be Single” starts streaming on Netflix on April 1.

“Scoop” (2024)

From left to right: Keeley Hawes, Rufus Sewell and Charity Wakefield in "Scoop" (Netflix)

Based on the true events, “Scoop” dramatizes and details how the BBC’s “Newsnight” landed their explosive interview with Prince Andrew to confront him about his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Billie Piper portrays Sam McAlister , the real-life interview booker (more like a wrangler) who nabbed the exclusive sit-down with Queen Elizabeth’s second son and King Charles’ younger brother. Gillian Anderson plays Emily Maitlis, the journalist who grilled the prince. High stakes make this adrenaline rush of a film one that will have viewers on the edge of their seats. “Scoop” launches on Netflix on April 5.

“You’ve Got Mail” (1998)

youve-got-mail-tom-hanks-meg-ryan

Tom Hanks’ priceless facial expressions add layers of levity to the otherwise pretty serious and stone-cold Joe Fox, the face behind the corporate machine of Fox & Sons Books. His family’s chain bookstore, similar to Barnes & Noble, puts indie bookstores out of business in New York City and makes big bucks doing it. Meg Ryan’s effortlessly charming Kathleen Kelly, owner of The Shop Around the Corner, an adorable one-of-a-kind children’s bookstore across the street from the newest Fox location, wants nothing more than to fall in love. The unlikely duo message back and forth via email and hit it off, but when they meet face-to-face (not realizing that they are pen pals), they can’t stand each other. Their conflict of interest business-wise, might have something to do with that. Dave Chappelle, Steve Zahn and Sara Ramirez also star in this beloved Nora Ephron film. “You’ve Got Mail” starts streaming on Netflix on April 1.

“Space Jam: A New Legacy” (2021)

space jam: A New Legacy lebron james

LeBron James takes over for Michael Jordan in the reboot of the 1996 childrens’ sports film. Instead of outer space, Bron takes on an all-new villain — Al G. Rhythm (Don Cheadle in the Warner Bros. Serververse — think, The Cloud) as Mr. G. Rhythm attempts to take over Bron’s likeness and even delete him from history. Bron’s son Dom (Cedric Joe) can’t possibly live up to his father’s success as a basketball player, but he does have a knack for videogame design, which his dad doesn’t exactly understand. Only when the two have it out on the court in view of “Game of Thrones” characters, “It” clown Pennywise and more Warner Bros. properties does it become clear that they just need a heart-to-heart. The animation layers and inclusion of some of the best pro ballers of all time add fun for the whole family. “Space Jam: A New Legacy” arrives on Netflix on April 2.

“Strange Way of Life” (2023)

Strange Way of Life

This 30-minute short film from Pedro Almodóvar stars Ethan Hawke as Sheriff Jake and Pedro Pascal as Silva. Silva rides a horse across the desert to visit his old friend Jake, 25 years after they worked together as hired gunmen. The Western includes some action, gore and romance, as well as LGBTQ+ themes. Pedro Pascal finds a formidable chemistry match in Ethan Hawke. This short installment in Almodóvar’s filmography still transports viewers into a whole world while running the length of a TV show episode. “Strange Way of Life” starts streaming on Netflix on April 12.

“Duran Duran: There’s Something You Should Know” (2018)

duran duran

The highs and lows of their careers balance with the impact they left on the music landscape, especially electronic pop.

“Hans Zimmer: Hollywood Rebel” (2022)

Another documentary heading to the streamer on April 15, “Hollywood Rebel” chronicles the career of the legendary Hans Zimmer, who has scored films from “Rain Man” to “Pirates of the Caribbean” to “Gladiator” to “No Time To Die.” More recent and epic works of the musician include the “Dune” duology, Netflix’s “Damsel,” Disney’s “The Creator” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Zimmer came to Hollywood from post-war Germany, and the doc takes viewers behind his process and secret sauces for soundtracking much of pop culture’s beloved films.

Best Civil War Movies and Documentaries on Netflix

Discover the best Civil War movies and documentaries on Netflix in April 2024.

There is no shortage of compelling Civil War feature films and documentaries to stream on Netflix in April 2024 . While many occur outside the United States, it's worth contextualizing the most memorable cinematic stories of civil unrest with Alex Garland's explosive new dystopian thriller Civil War opening on April 12, 2024. Starring Kirsten Dunst as a war correspondent, Civil War imagines a not-so-far-off future in America where politically divided citizens hash out their differences on the battlefield.

Although all-time great American Civil War movies like Edward Zwick's Glory and Ken Burn's Civil War documentary are no longer hosted on the platform, there are plenty of worthy films chronicling the devastating impact of international countries fighting among themselves in the name of progress and prosperity. Here are the eight best Civil War narrative features and documentaries on Netflix.

8 Beasts of No Nation (2015)

A fictional african country serves as a grand allegory, beasts of no nation.

*Availability in US

Not available

Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga from a script he co-wrote with Uzodinma Iweala, Beasts of No Nation is arguably the best Civil War movie on Netflix in 2024. The story follows Agu (Abraham Attah), a young boy in West Africa who becomes a gallant child soldier who protects his parents and leads his people through a bloody civil war. Torn between his devotion to his country and his fear of his ruthless commander (one of Idris Elba's best performances ), Agu is robbed of his childhood as he rises as an unlikely hero.

Unflinching and All Too Real

While not for the faint of heart, Beasts of No Nation was praised by critics for its visceral, uncompromising glimpse of the hyper-violent horrors of war and the resilient ingenuity Agu demonstrates as he fights for his freedom. Fukunaga's stark visual style was also hailed for its immersive tension and suspense, depicting the civil war with an unforgettable flare. By refusing to name the African country at war with itself, the movie becomes an allegory for countless nations that suffer similar fates, doing so with a glint of optimism that promises a better future.

7 Winter on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom (2015)

A prescient account of the ukrainian revolution.

Directed by Evgeny Afineevsky, Winter on Fire: Fight for Freedom is a timely and topical Netflix documentary. The eye-opening account traces the 2013-2014 Revolution of Dignity, also known as The Maiden Uprising and the Ukrainian Revolution. The Maiden Uprising consisted of Ukrainian nationals protesting President Viktor Yanukovych's decision not to join a free trade agreement with the European Union (EU). The result of the revolution led to the removal of Yanukovych from the presidency and a return to the 2004 Ukrainian Constitution.

A Critically Acclaimed Account

Roughly three months after The Ukrainian Revolution ended in February 2014, the Russian invasion of Ukraine took place and the devastating ramifications are still felt a decade later. Winter on Fire is more relevant today than most civil war documentaries on Netflix and is so well-made that it earned a 2016 Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature. The film also scored a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking and was listed among the 2016 winners at the Television Academy Honors.

6 The White Helmets (2016)

An unflinching account of the syrian civil defence.

Netflix's first Oscar-winning documentary , The White Helmets , is a must-see 41-minute account of The Syrian Civil Defence. This organization consisted of national volunteers and first responders who risked their lives to rescue victims injured in the war in Syria and Turkey between the locals and the opposition-led Syrian National Coalition. While the focus remains on the medical professionals and the heroic efforts made by the volunteers, the war itself is felt on the periphery.

The Triumph of Human Compassion

By chronicling the selfless sacrifices of the White Helmet members Khalid and Mohammed Farah, Abu Omar, and Raed Saleh, the inspiring doc puts faces to the many nameless, unknown saviors who continue to do charitable work in a wartorn region. Although the violence is disturbing and shocking at times, the overall message of strangers coming together to uplift a country spiritually and emotionally following a protracted war is hard to resist.

10 Most Disturbing Documentaries and Docuseries on Netflix

5 born in syria (2016), a harrowing chronicle of displaced child refugees.

Sticking with the Syrian Civil War, Born in Syria is a heartbreaking chronicle of the lost children displaced in the country following ISIS' takeover of the region and the decisions made by President Bachar al-Assad. Beginning in 2011, the doc depicts the unthinkable displacement of roughly nine million Syrian nationals, with roughly 4 million believed to be children. The sobering tearjerker is difficult to endure but boasts a profoundly important message worth witnessing.

The Impact of War on Children

Beyond the unfathomable acts of violence that separate children from their parents, the doc shows how hard it is for children to find a safe haven even in so-called refugee camps designed for their well-being. As the children long for a better life by fleeing to Europe, the documentary is unafraid to show the futile dead ends at the Syrian border. It may be one of the least-viewed and most unheralded Netflix Civil War documentaries, but it's undeniably powerful.

4 The Beguiled (2017)

The american civil war is the backdrop of a psychological thriller.

A remake of the 1971 Clint Eastwood classic , Sofia Coppola's The Beguiled is a semi-erotic psychological thriller set during the American Civil War. Although the war itself is more of a backdrop, the story concerns John McBurney (Colin Farrell), a corporal serving in the Union Army in the fight against the Confederates in 1864. When McBurney is injured in battle, he stumbles on an all-female farmhouse, where he begins to sew division among the women as they nurse him back to health.

A Delightful Twisty Civil War Thriller

Featuring terrific performances by its superb cast, including Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Angourie Rice, and Elle Fanning, The Beguiled careens toward a soapy Southern Gothic thriller in the end, but the period detail is impeccable and the societal mores of the Civil War era are just as fascinating as the original. Rather than turning McBruney in as a POW to the Confederate Army, they become attracted to his unbridled masculinity, leading to an unpredictably steamy psychosexual affair for the ages.

3 First They Killed My Father (2017)

Angelina jolie tackles the cambodian civil war with grace and dignity, first they killed my father.

Angelina Jolie rarely gets the credit she deserves as a talented director. Case in point, the 2017 historical drama First They Killed My Father tells the remarkable true story of Loung Ung (Sareum Srey Moch), a five-year-old Cambodian girl forced into battle following the death of her father at the hands of the communist Khmer Rouge regime. Much like Beasts of No Nation , the movie shows how age does not matter when protecting one's beliefs, family, and country during international wars. Unlike Beasts of No Nation , the story genuinely happened.

Stunningly Based on a True Story

Following the death of her father and the displacement of her siblings, Loung was conscripted into an army training regiment as the Cambodian Civil War began. As Vietnamese forces attempted to rescue the remaining Cambodians, Loung learned how to fight in hand-to-hand combat, booby-trapping, firearm shooting, and laying landmines. Yet, despite her orders and the propaganda fed to her daily, Loung rose above the chaos and became a civil rights activist as an adult. The film was lauded for Moch's precocious performance and for Jolie's deft ability to tackle a serious subject with grace and dignity.

10 Forgotten Angelina Jolie Movies That Deserve a Re-Watch

2 harriet (2019), a stirring biopic about a true civil war hero.

A rousing Civil War-era female biopic , Harriet tells the story of real-life abolitionist and Underground Railroad leader, Harriet Tubman (Cynthia Erivo). The movie begins in 1849 Maryland, where Harriet toils on the Brodess plantation as an indentured slave despite being married to a freedman. The movie charts Harriet's rise to power as she travels West toward Philadelphia and begins aiding slaves in their escape via the Underground Railroad.

The Story of an Incredible Figure

Beyond Erivo's commanding performance, Harriet drew acclaim for director Kasi Lemmons' decision to spare viewers the ugly horrors of slavery and instead focus on Harriet's indomitable spirit and uplifting agency to help others in her position. Engaging, respectful, and more optimistic than most American Civil War stories, Harriet is more of a heartfelt celebration of Tubman's legacy than it is a grim portrait of America's original sin.

1 The Woman King (2022)

The incredible true story of the kingdom of dahomey, the woman king.

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, The Woman King recounts the incredible true story of General Nanisca (Viola Davis), the leader of an all-female army in the West African Kingdom of Dahomey. When the Kingdom liberates the enslaved women, the Oyo Empire attacks Dahomey and launches a brutal civil war. Undaunted, Nanisca and her soldiers fight back in an unbelievably brave stand-off using primitive low-tech weaponry.

A Powerhouse Performance from Davis

The Woman King drew near-unanimous praise for Davis' dedicated performance and physically dominating screen presence. The action epic has been compared to Braveheart and Gladiator for its eye-popping size, scope, scale, and spectacle. Unlike many war movies that become mired in the grim aspects of battle, The Woman King delivers intense action sequences designed to make viewers root and cheer for Nanisca and her people to triumph over their captors. Most importantly, the film spotlights a little-known chapter in West Africa's wartorn history.

When computer company Apple announced that it was getting into the streaming TV game, there were plenty of people who were skeptical about the company's ability to pull it off. Why would the tech giant, which is most known for the Macintosh and the iPhone, have any credibility in making television shows? It doesn't seem the two ideas would mesh in any meaningful way, but in the years since Apple TV Plus launched, the company has come up with some pretty impressive original shows, and it picked up a Best Picture Oscar on top of that. What's even more impressive is that these Apple TV shows and movies run the gamut from comedy to drama, and are all set in wildly different and imaginative places. Apple may be best known for making great phones, but it turns out it knows how to tell pretty interesting stories, too. These Apple TV movies and shows are the cream of the crop and the best on this streaming service. Is Scoop a true story? What to know about the Netflix movie about Prince Andrew on Newsnight

Two people, a man and a woman, sit in an ornate room

As last month's health news about Princess Kate shows, intense media scrutiny and the royal family go hand in hand.

Sometimes it's a toxic sideshow, and sometimes it leads to a bombshell that rocks the royal family's foundations.

For instance, in 2019, as rumours of Prince Andrew's close friendship with convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein swirled, the prince conducted an interview with a BBC news program that would change the modern royal family forever.

Now the Newsnight scandal is coming to the silver screen with the release of new Netflix movie, Scoop.

Who is Prince Andrew?

He's Queen Elizabeth II's third child and Charles's younger brother. He was born second in line to the throne and is now bumped down to eighth, thanks to William, Harry, and their children.

You might be familiar with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson (a victim of the Murdoch phone-hacking scandal ) or their daughters Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice (of the famous royal wedding hats ).

A man in a three piece suit with tails walks with his daughter in a teal formal dress with mesh sleeves

By the 10s, Prince Andrew faced mounting scrutiny over his relationship to convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. In 2014, a Florida court filing implicated Prince Andrew as one of several high-profile men who had sexual interactions with a then-minor, later revealed to be Australian American woman Virginia Giuffre.

The noise around Andrew got so loud that, in 2015, the palace spoke up. "Any suggestion of impropriety with under-age minors is categorically untrue," a palace spokesperson said.

Four years later, amid ongoing rumours and allegations detailed in court documents, Prince Andrew agreed to speak publicly on the issue in an interview with BBC program Newsnight.

With 1.7 million Britons watching on, Prince Andrew vehemently denied ever meeting Giuffre (he said he was at a Pizza Express for his daughter's birthday). He added that her description of him sweating profusely was false because he "lost the ability to sweat" is a war accident. He also admitted that he slept at Epstein's mansion for three days in 2010, simply because "it was a convenient place to stay".

The interview was poorly received by the press and the public. Four days after the broadcast, Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Andrew would be stepping down from all royal duties "for the foreseeable future".

In January 2022, Prince Andrew was stripped of his military affiliation and royal patronages. A month later he settled a civil suit brought by Giuffre for an undisclosed amount of money.

What is Scoop about?

While there was fallout from the Newsnight interview for the royal family, Scoop is less concerned with that than the real-life women who battled with the palace to land the groundbreaking interview with Prince Andrew.

There's Sam McAlister (Billie Piper) the Newsnight interview booker, editor Esme Wren (Romola Garai), and journalist Emily Maitlis (Gillian Anderson).

A woman with short blond hair in a gray jacket sits in front of a cabinet.

In the Netflix movie, we follow McAlister, Wren and Maitlis from initial rejections to tense negotiations with Prince Andrew's private secretary Amanda Thirsk (Keeley Hawes); from many hours of laborious research to the interview itself.

"The interview is so significant, but it's 5 per cent of the story," McAlister (the real one) told Netflix.

"What we do is we take you on the journey to how this all began."

A blond woman in a black jacket sits in front of computer screens

How true to life is Scoop?

We don't know yet! But we do know that it's based on McAlister's book, Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the Most Shocking Interviews.

A former criminal barrister, McAlister already had a reputation as a tenacious TV producer before she secured the Prince Andrew interview. Scoop will focus on the months of scut work McAlister and her team undertook before getting access to Prince Andrew.

It all started innocently enough, with McAlister requesting a TV interview with Andrew in response to an innocuous press release about his business initiative Pitch@Palace.

The response was a resounding "no".

Six months later, Prince Andrew's private secretary got in touch to say that the prince was now interested in being interviewed but under no circumstances would he comment on the Epstein situation. Newsnight originally declined the interview.

"Eight weeks later, Jeffrey Epstein was arrested. Twelve weeks later, he was dead. Twenty weeks later, I had managed to persuade Amanda Thirsk that Prince Andrew's position – of silence in the face of global scrutiny — was untenable," McAlister wrote in her book.

Another curveball was thrown at the Newsnight team when Andrew revealed he had brought an advisor to the negotiation table — his daughter Princess Beatrice.

"Now the only thing worse than negotiating with a member of the Royal Family about allegations of sexual impropriety, is doing so in front of his daughter," McAlister wrote.

Princess Beatrice will appear in Scoop, played by Charity Wakefield (The Great).

Princess Beatrice, Prince Andrew in Scoop

McAlister was on the set of Scoop when they re-enacted the infamous interview. She told Netflix she found it eerily similar to real life.

"The level of detail, putting together exactly the same room, the camera angles, the lighting, the specifics of the table, the cables, the types of cameras, the carpet — everything is so ridiculously close,' she said.

"It was like being there again."

Where can I watch scoop in Australia?

Scoop premieres on Netflix on April 5.
