By Mark Delaney on March 22, 2023 at 12:06PM PDT
After a long wait and plenty of hype, Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), which is often called Fortnite Creative 2.0 by fans, is out now, and Epic's hugely popular game will never be the same. For those who build their own games and experiences for Fortnite Creative mode, UEFN broadens and deepens the tools they have available by a huge degree.
It also alters the pay structure that creators will use with what Epic is calling Creator Economy 2.0--not to be confused with the aforementioned fan name for UEFN. Meanwhile, players who prefer to play Creative but not build in it themselves will benefit by having access to the coming influx of these projects. Players who have previously just seen Fortnite as a battle royale game may yet discover a whole new world with Creative mode. Here's everything you need to know about UEFN AKA Creative 2.0.

Now Playing: Fortnite Creator Economy 2.0 and UEFN Demo Presentation | State of Unreal GDC 2023
What is Unreal Editor for Fortnite?
Known as UEFN for short, Unreal Editor for Fortnite is a free application available now on the Epic Games Store which seeks to massively improve the tools players have at their disposal for creating new games and experiences within Fortnite Creative mode. Running on Unreal Engine 5 with several of the engine's most touted features, such as the Lumen lighting technology that was introduced with Fortnite Chapter 4 last December, UEFN has been whispered about for months as "Creative 2.0," a name that now proves a bit redundant given Epic's parallel unveiling of Creator Economy 2.0, which we'll get to further down in this article.
With UEFN, anyone can design, develop, and publish their own custom experiences directly into Fortnite Creative mode. The app is launching in a public beta state and co-exists with Fortnite's legacy Creative toolset, making it essentially an enhancement of those earlier tools rather than a wholesale replacement of them.
UEFN uses a new programming language created by Epic called Verse, which the studio took time to outline during its State of Unreal 2023 presentation from GDC. Players will need to get acquainted with Verse, though a live demo seemed to suggest it's relatively intuitive compared to some other programming languages, which historically have been one of the major barriers preventing some would-be creators from realizing their game dev dreams.
Fab Marketplace
Alongside the reveal of UEFN, Epic has announced it is building a "unified 3D marketplace" called Fab Marketplace. As a singular storefront, it will combine several of Epic's most popular game dev toolsets that previously existed on their own: Unreal Engine Marketplace, Sketchfab, Quixel Bridge, and the ArtStation Marketplace. These tools will be available in UEFN as a plug-in one-stop-shop where players can quickly find pre-fabricated assets, artwork, and more just as they may have before--only now it will all be found in one place.
Creator Economy 2.0
Not to be confused with the commonly used fan name for UEFN--"Creative 2.0"--the Creator Economy 2.0 is a remodeling of how creators within the Fortnite ecosystem will earn money for their work. Previously players could enter a Creator Code when buying in-game items such as a seasonal battle pass, skins, and emotes. Creator Codes were provided by Epic to certain players, streamers, and content creators. However, that only helped creators if players remembered to manually enter their code when making purchases--though entering it just once would keep it there for future purchases unless otherwise undone by the player.
With Creator Economy 2.0, Epic is revising how players get paid. Moving forward, 40% of the money made from in-game purchases will go into an "engagement pool" to be paid out to eligible creators "including independent creators' islands, and Epic's own islands like Battle Royale." Those eligible include players age 18 or older whose Fortnite accounts are at least 90 days old.
In a lengthy blog post , Epic further explained how eligibility and payouts are calculated:
Engagement payouts reward creation of islands that players enjoy. Today, payouts are based on engagement metrics that contribute to the health of the overall Fortnite ecosystem. At launch, the metrics fall into two groups:
- Player Popularity: Islands that attract new players and re-engage lapsed players signal an experience that Fortnite players love, so the number of players newly joining Fortnite, and lapsed players returning to Fortnite contribute to this calculation.
- Player Retention: Islands where players return day-to-day and week-to-week indicate compelling gameplay, so consistent play and returning players contribute to this calculation.
Over time we expect the tracking metrics will change based on creator and player feedback, and we will update you of such changes as they occur.
Epic said it plans to roll out additional features which will reward players younger than 18 for their efforts, as well, though had no concrete details to share just yet. Players who wish to apply to become an official creator within Fortnite can do so here .
Epic's Picks - UEFN launch experiences
To help introduce players to the potential of UEFN, Epic has worked with several creators to showcase a few projects on launch day. Players can head into Fortnite's Discovery tab in-game and find several new UEFN-made projects under a banner titled Epic's Picks.
Projects include Deserted: Domination, Forest Guardian, and The Space Inside, which you'll also see glimpses of in the trailer below.
UEFN has finally arrived after months of speculation. For some players, these new tools should help them expand their creativity and more seamlessly earn money for their work. But for the Fortnite community as a whole, which Epic said includes 70 million monthly active users, this may well prove to be a major reimaging of what is often considered a battle royale game first and foremost.
As Epic wasn't shy about using the term "metaverse" during its 2023 GDC keynote presentation, it's clear that Epic sees player-driven content as a battleground in the next 10 years and beyond. With platforms and companies such as Roblox, Meta, and more all competing to be the name in virtual hangout spaces and all-in-one platforms of the future, Epic is betting big on Fortnite to keep its lead over the competition.

Epic unveils fortnite creative 2.0 using new unreal editor, share this article.
Epic revealed Fortnite Creative 2.0 during its GDC 2023 presentation, alongside a new Unreal editor to further its metaverse ambitions. Fortnite Creative 2.0 gives every player access to an expansive design tool, officially called the Unreal Editor for Fortnite, which they can use to create almost anything that comes to mind in the multiplayer game .
Like in the original creative mode, you can use assets that are already in Fortnite to make something in that distinctive style, but that’s just the start. Epic’s promotional trailer included a level that looked like it wouldn’t be out of place in a FromSoft game and an industrial world that resembled Final Fantasy 7 ’s Midgar, with a boss fight against a massive robot.
The heroes in all this? Fortnite ’s fish mascot. Whatever you create, you can plop your Fortnite character in it, skins and all.
Creative 2.0 is rolling out alongside a money-making incentive for creators as well. Epic is setting aside a shared pool of 40 percent of its item shop revenue to split between itself and creators whose islands reach certain engagement metric milestones. The goal, Epic said , is attracting more people to Fortnite through these creations, though it the company offered no specific measurements to help creators know what benchmarks to aim for.

How to get Fortnite Creative 2.0 and what is it for?
We explain how you can access Fortnite Creative and UEFN, the Unreal Editor for Fortnite.
Fortnite Creative 2.0 has added the UEFN, or Unreal Editor for Fortnite, a public beta of which is now available, and which allows players to make greater changes in Fortnite Creative mode by editing with a new version of the Unreal Engine toolkit, as part of Fortnite's transition to the Unreal 5 engine. We'll explain how you can access this and how to play Fortnite Creative 2.0 for yourself - if "play" is really the word we're looking for here.
How to play Fortnite Creative 2.0 and the UEFN
Fortnite Creative 2.0 and the Public Beta of the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) are both live and part of Fortnite itself now , as a part and parcel of the game's weekly update.
However, it is currently only for PC players . Players on any console can play creations made in Fortnite Creative 2.0, by going into the Discover tab and looking for them with Fortnite Creative codes as normal, but only players on PC can use these new tools. If you are a PC player, here's how to get it up and running:
1. Open the Epic Games Launcher app.
2. Select "Library" in the menu in the sidebar.
3. Select "Unreal Editor for Fortnite"
4. Click launch.
5. Once the UEFN has loaded, close the News popup that… er, pops up.
6. Select a project from the project browser, or "Create a New Project" to begin editing.
What is Fortnite Creative 2.0?
Fortnite Creative 2.0 is an enhanced version of the island and level editor that was already part of the game, this time incorporating more advanced tools for level creation as part of the Unreal 5 Engine that Fortnite recently transitioned to in Fortnite Chapter 4 .
The whole thing is currently still very much in development, accessible only as a Public Beta, and has more elements planned to be added in the future before final release. However, it is still usable right now nonetheless, and Epic Games have already released some sample experiences in Discover to show what's possible, as well as a lot of information about the technical side of how to use it .
Is Fortnite Creative 2.0 on PS4, PS5, Xbox and Switch consoles?
No, Fortnite Creative 2.0 and the UEFN is not currently available on Xbox, PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, or any platform or console other than the PC and the Epic Games launcher.
Verse scripts are edited using the UEFN editor on PC, and the scripts you make work in Fortnite on all platforms users play on. Later we will bring script editing to Creative Mode on all platforms (plug in a keyboard to type) but that’s not in the first 6 months of release. January 25, 2023
However, while there's been no official announcement about when or if Creative 2.0 will be added to consoles, this Tweet from CEO of Epic Games Tim Sweeney has stated that it will be a minimum of six months until these scripting tools will migrate to other platforms . However, as mentioned, that doesn't stop console players from playing the islands and levels made in 2.0, just from making their own.

The Basics Of Creative 2.0 In Fortnite
Creative 2.0 is one of the most popular and interesting game modes that Fortnite has to offer. Giving players the tools to create their own in-game experiences using Fortnite’s assets and engine, Creative 2.0 allows players to use their imagination to the fullest.
Perhaps one of the most unique modes added to Fortnite, Creative 2.0 gives players the freedom to create and share games within the game itself, without the hassle of actually coding or using an outside engine. Within the Creative menu, there are a wide variety of different experiences created by players. Creative allows players to take a break from the high-octane action of regular Fortnite and experience some casual fun.
In this article, we are going to break down the basics of Creative like menu navigation, the hub world, and the different features the game mode offers players to help them create their own experiences.
Navigating the Creative Menu
At first glance, the Creative menu can be a bit daunting for some players with all of the different maps and games it throws at you right off the bat. However, navigating the menu is easier than it may seem.
The Discover Tab is the first tab that opens when you go to open Creative. To get started, simply click the icon to change the game mode above the Play button on the right side of the screen. This will open the menu showing all the different game modes and experiences you can choose from. By default, the category at the top of the menu should be the By Epic option. These are all the default Fortnite game modes like Solos, Duos, Squads, Zero-Build, Save The World, etc. There are several other categories and genres to choose from that you can find by scrolling up or down the menu.
If you want to narrow your search, selecting the Browse tab will provide you with a list of different categories. Clicking one of these tabs will direct you to a menu with a list of different games to choose from. To go back to the main search menu, press the Escape Key, or click the back button in the lower right corner. If you find a game that you want to try out, click the game you would like to play or click the Accept button. This will take you back to the main Fortnite menu where you can ready up and join the server.
Finally, the last three tabs are the My Library, Create, and Island Code options. My Library allows you to view all the different games that you have favorited in the past, allowing you to quickly navigate through all the past games you liked the most. It also allows you to see your recently played games in case you did not favorite them previously. The Create tab simply provides you with an option that takes you back to the main menu and loads up Creative in the game mode window. Lastly, the Island Code tab allows you to enter a Creator’s Island Code that takes you directly to their island or game.
The Hub World
You will be taken to the Hub World when launching Creative and it is a small room that contains a rift that takes you to the selected Island in the Console next to the rift. Using the Console allows you to select which of your Islands you would like to play if you have multiple. To select an Island simply select which one you want to play, and then click the Set Portal button in the bottom right. On this tab, you can also remove duplicates or rename any of the Islands you have. The console also allows you to see your deleted Islands and recover them if you wish to do so.
In Game Options and Settings
When you arrive on your Island you will be spawned on a platform that has four consoles that allow you to change different game settings. They are Loot, Deployment, Storm Caller, and Map Settings. Each of these provides you with tools on the menu of each console to adjust each category to your liking. Each of these menus essentially functions the same way, providing you with options, functions, and events to choose from in the corresponding menu.
Opening your inventory will display three tabs, My Island, Creative, and Play. Each of these tabs has menus that display different settings. The Play tab simply shows your current inventory like regular Fortnite. The Creative tab shows all the different Devices, Weapons, Consumables, Chest options, and Levels. Here you can search for or organize by keyword to find what you need. One thing to note about the Weapons tab is that it includes all weapons in Fortnite, both current and vaulted. My Island provides you with multiple different tabs. Each of these tabs has menus that display different settings that you can adjust. Here is a quick rundown of the My Island tab:
This menu allows you to control the general settings regarding players and interactions that will be allowed in your game. Things like voice chat options, if there are teams, player limits, score settings, time limits, etc. are all on this menu.
This tab allows you to control specific in-game settings like ammo, health, resources, building, damage modifiers, allowing flight, player speed, etc. This is where the creator of the world gets to make the experience unique outside of the map they build.
This menu pertains to the user interface settings such as the mini-map, scoreboard, timers, or anything that does not pertain to the gameplay but the in-game UI.
The Debug menu is used for debugging custom options that are applied through the device items found in the Creative menu that can change settings in-game.
The Tools tab is used to help create and restore backups, as well as upgrade devices or entirely reset your Island. This menu also provides players with a link to apply to have their creations officially published.

What is Fortnite Creative 2.0? New platform explained
Matthew "MJP" Pryor
The future of Fortnite and game design is finally here.
After months of anticipation, Fortnite Creative 2.0 is now available. Epic Games hosted the State of Unreal conference at the Game Developers Conference 2023 today, where the company briefed viewers worldwide on the future of Unreal Engine 5.0 and Fortnite Creative 2.0. This new tool revolutionizes game design and publishing, and Epic Games will incentivize creators within Fortnite to put forward their best work and be rewarded for it.
Here’s everything you need to know about the all-new Fortnite Creative 2.0 tool, including a trailer, features, and how creators can earn income for their creations.
What is Fortnite Creative 2.0?
Epic Games’ Fortnite Creative 2.0, also known as Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), is the future of gaming. This new tool allows creators to build more detailed Fortnite maps and even complete games. Fortnite Creative 2.0 is available to players on all platforms, including PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, and more. The trailer above showcases what is capable within UEFN.
Users of UEFN can collaborate with individuals on other platforms to design and test maps in real-time. This means a friend can jump into the environment and see the difference once you alter your creation. Epic Games says Fortnite Creative 2.0 is a tool for advanced creators and those who found their footing while creating maps.
UEFN users can import custom assets, eliminating the Fortnite appearance and making the experience unique. It's a robust tool that will ultimately lead to an exceptional level and game design.
When does Fortnite Creative 2.0 come out?
UEFN has entered public beta, meaning you can access it now. You can download Unreal Editor for Fortnite via the Epic Games website and add it to your Epic Games launcher. Additionally, Epic Games released various new maps to show the power of Creative 2.0.
Here is a list of maps you can check out, which you can also find by navigating to the Epic's Picks category in Fortnite:

The Space Inside and Forest Guardian are atmospheric experiences and Deserted: Domination sports a Call of Duty aesthetic and game type. You can expect more innovative maps and, eventually, entire games as the platform grows.
UEFN provides a stable economy for map and game creators
In addition to the UEFN announcement, Epic Games has revealed Creator Economy 2.0–a platform where designers can monetize their hard work. According to Epic’s blog post, “engagement payouts distribute 40% of the net revenue from Fortnite’s Item Shop and most real-money Fortnite purchases to all island publishers on a monthly basis.”
This system operates independently of the widely recognized Support-A-Creator (SAC) program. Payouts account for island popularity, engagement, retention, and driving new players.
Fortnite Creative 2.0 will continue to grow and become a centralized location of game development. The sky is the limit, and we’ll have to wait and see how publishers and creators can push UEFN’s boundaries.
