Will Nate Archibald Be Chuck Bass' Best Man? Chace Crawford Reveals On 'WWHL' If He Was Invited To Ed Westwick's Wedding

'bridgerton' season 3 episode 7 recap: the pen-ultimate episode, it’s a 'yellowstone' wedding: co-star couple ryan bingham and hassie harrison marry in a "cowboy black tie" ceremony, stream it or skip it: ‘mother of the bride’ on netflix, a destination wedding rom-com starring brooke shields.

In the Netflix dramedy Family Secrets , also known by its original Polish title Gry Rodzinne ( Family Games ), a young couple’s wedding day plays out over eight episodes full of flashbacks, family dramas, intermingling romantic affairs, and internecine friendship warfare. Will Katarzyna ever make it to the altar to marry Janek? And if that’s not his baby she’s carrying, whose is it?

FAMILY SECRETS : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: A woman in full wedding regalia is running through a busy downtown pedestrian area, distracted and alone. She loses and reclaims a gossamer veil. She’s also pregnant.

The Gist: That intersection Katarzyna, (Eliza Rycembel), also known as Kaska, was running to? It marks the spot where, five years before this wedding day of hers, she met Pawel (Piotr Pacek) on the day she got into medical school. In prime romantic comedy fashion he saved her from being creamed by a tram, they danced like loons to the Scissor Sisters, and stared into each other’s eyes before laughing it off as chance. But Pawel’s nowhere to be found today, everyone’s looking at her in her wedding dress, and her sister Alicja (Malgorzata Mikolajczak) is pleading with her to get a grip. Kaska definitely isn’t glowing like a bride.

In another flashback, it’s seven months before the wedding. Kaska, crying, is on the street after her mother Malgosia (Izabela Kuna) kicked her out, but Alicja’s glad to take her in. She’s also vomiting somewhat uncontrollably. The next day, Kaska attends a cranial dissection lecture conducted by Dorota (Edyta Olszowka), whose husband Emil (Pawel Delag) operates a cosmetic surgery clinic with their son Janek (Bartosz Gelner) – people who we’ve already seen in the present, waiting in the church for Kaska to show.

Janek is a surgeon at his father’s clinic, but the two spend more time bickering than they do rhinoplastying. “You have to control your lust, dad,” he spits. “You’re married,” and who does Janek encounter in Emil’s office but Malgosia. Not only that, but the older doctor is seen outside the clinic, seeming to comfort a frantic Kaska. The connections between these two families are being steadily revealed in flashback form, but there’s still plenty of mystery about exactly what’s going on. Figure in a few ancillary characters – Alicja’s rich boyfriend, who’s also Janek’s BFF, Janek’s model ex-girlfriend, who Alicja works for as a makeup artist, and Dawid, everyone’s friend who moonlights as a drag queen – and there’s a lot to unpack as we rejoin Kaska in the present. She’s finally agreed to be taken to the church. But she’s no closer to marrying Janek.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? Netflix also features Holiday Secrets , a German limited series that probes its family dynamics through the prism of the Christmas season. And Peacock includes both seasons of the terrific Irish drama Smother , about the matriarch of a County Clare family, her evolving relationships with each of her daughters, and the lengths she’ll go to protect them from – wait for it – a family secret.

Our Take: In addition to its flashback-happy format, Family Secrets utilizes the type of handheld cameras, verite close-ups, and sudden zoom outs that have been popularized through shows like Arrested Development and Modern Family . It’s a purposeful aesthetic touch that adds immediate gravity to the plot, which evolves elliptically as it’s informed by various perspectives. In the present, in the church on Kaska and Janek’s wedding day, we’re immediately engrossed in the barbs and straight up verbal roundhouses getting tossed between Dorota and Emil – husband and wife who have each been unfaithful – in the front row, even as we see Janek fretting out by the main entrance, and the guests shifting sweatily and impatiently in their pews. Not only that, but suddenly Dorota and Emil are engaged in an argument with the nun singing religious hymns as cover for the ceremony’s delay. In the multiple scenarios occurring simultaneously in Family Secrets , there’s even drama with the clergy, and the shifty cameras and timelines catch it all.

Sex and Skin: Nothing in the first episode, but there’s lots of talk about affairs both had and having, and romantic partners old and new.

Parting Shot: Kaska, having finally arrived with Alicja at the church, joins Janek. But she only makes it halfway up the aisle before hesitating again, halting, turning this way and that, and finally heading back out the way she came.

Sleeper Star: In the early going it’s Edyta Olszowka who makes the biggest impression as Dorota, a woman blending the icy unease of her relationship with a philandering husband with the fallout from her own extramarital activity, the demands of her professional life at the medical school, and her attempts to keep up appearances as a wealthy family supposedly free of dysfunction. And while we don’t see much of him in the first episode of Family Secrets , look for Piotr Pacek ( Sexify ) to make a splash as Pawel as this show’s dramas unfold.

Most Pilot-y Line: “How about we end this farce,” Emil grumbles to Dorota. “She’s not coming.” It’s abundantly clear that it’d be most convenient for Emil if Kaska called it off. But Dorota isn’t letting him off the hook that easily. “You think you know her so well, but you don’t. You can have sex with someone for 30 years and know nothing about them.”

Will you stream or skip the Polish dramedy #FamilySecrets on @netflix ? #SIOSI — Decider (@decider) September 1, 2022

Our Call: STREAM IT. Family Secrets feels very contemporary with its narrative switchbacks and various tiers of love life damage. It’ll be interesting to see who’s with who and what has finally been said out loud once this wedding day ends eight episodes from now.

‘Family Secrets’ Ending, Explained: How Was Jan Involved In Pawel’s Life? What Happened To Pawel And Kaska?

Family Secrets Season 1 Ending Explained Eliza Rycembel as Kaska

On Kaska and Jan’s wedding day, Kaska learns multiple truths about her family that left her exasperated. “Family Secrets” is about two dysfunctional families coming together for holy matrimony that is disrupted for some reason or other. Even though Kaska had decided to marry Jan, she could not share the vows with him. Secrets that were kept hidden from her started to spill as the situation spiraled out of control. The series manages to balance the humor and the suspense, but drags it far too long.

Spoilers Ahead

What Is The Series About?

Kaska was destined to meet Pawel. He saved her from a potential accident as she was talking on the phone while crossing the road. As luck would have it, they were both about to start studying medicine at the same college. Naturally, they became the best of friends as they spent time together. Their relationship gradually evolved from friendship to romance, just as Pawel had predicted on the first day that their lives coincided. Kaska was madly in love with Pawel, but she did not wish to marry him just because she was pregnant. Even though Pawel insisted, she struggled to commit to marriage. A few days after constantly refusing his proposal, Pawel disappeared. He was gone from her life, leaving no trace behind. She sent multiple texts and emails, but he never contacted her. She could not wrap her head around the possibility of Pawel disappearing just because she was not ready to get married. It did not seem like a valid reason, but then what made him leave Warsaw?

Kaska felt Pawel’s absence every day, but then she met Jan. Jan was a loud personality who became the heart of every party. He concealed his depression with humor and resorted to alcohol and drugs to cope with his dysfunctional family. Jan felt an instant connection with Kaska. It was perhaps also because he had seen her with his father and wanted to find out what his father was up to. Jan knew Kaska was an important piece of the puzzle that his family had created, and she chose to keep her close. Kaska and Jan were far apart in terms of personalities, but Jan never stopped pursuing Kaska. Saddened by the disappearance of her lover and the growing responsibility of raising a child, Kaska gave in to Jan’s request, and the two decided to build a future together. But Kaska did not know that she was being manipulated to fulfill Jan’s dream of having a perfect family. Something that he always desired but could never enjoy. She was his way of getting back at his family for pushing him to the edge. But marriage can never function on deceit, and that was what became clear on their wedding day.

Why Did Kaska’s Mother Disapprove Of Her Marriage With Jan?

Kaska’s mother, Malgozata, wanted more from her life than the usual drudgery. She disapproved of her husband, Marek’s decision to settle away from Warsaw because of a lucrative job offer. She wanted him to be there for his family, whereas he wanted to do more than a part-time job and earn enough to live a fulfilling life. Malgozata refused to leave Warsaw, and Marek had to move out alone. Kaska opposed her mother’s decision; she wanted her mother to support her father on his journey. Her sister, Alicja, felt quite the opposite. She thought that her mother was right to not give in to every whim of their father. As the parents argued, the two sisters dreamt of moving out.

Malgozata was young at heart; she did not wish to rot in her misfortune and wanted to live her life to the fullest. A divine coincidence occurred when she met with an accident and was introduced to Emil. While she was not seriously injured, she surely was madly drawn to the man who was behind the wheel. Emil was a famous plastic surgeon, and also the father of Jan. Emil was notorious for cheating on his wife with several women, and Malgozata was just another fish in the sea. Even though their relationship was a casual one for Emil, it was not the same for Malgozata. She felt alive for the first time in a long time, and she started to love herself in the process. She fell in love with him and wanted a lot more than just a physical relationship. But Emil refused to commit to it. He was not ready to leave his wife, Dorota. No matter how pathetic their marriage was, he cared for her.

When Kaska announced that she would wed Jan, Malgozata refused to accept it. Heartbroken by her failed relationship with Emil, she doubted Kaska for getting romantically involved with him. She had seen the two in a car and started to hate her daughter from that instant. She threw Kaska out of their house to punish her without even allowing her to explain herself. She despised the entire family and did not wish for her daughter to marry their son.

How Was Dorota Responsible For Pawel’s Disappearance?

Dorota was tired of her husband. She had seen and heard him cheat on her on more than one occasion. The worst part was that now her son was aware of his father’s actions as well. To shame Emil, Jan would often bring up uncomfortable topics to discuss over breakfast. From what we know, Dorota was not loyal either. At one point, Emil accused Dorota of being the one to first cheat on him.

Dorota met Pawel when he appeared late for an examination, and she refused to allow him to take the test. Later, Pawel’s father explained how he was responsible for his son’s delay, and Dorota conducted a separate exam for him. Soon, he became her object of desire, and she was determined to own him. Even though Pawel did not show any interest, she refused to give up. She found a reason to live and enjoy her life without realizing how suffocating it was for Pawel. She was a professor and had powers that she threatened to misuse if Pawel refused to give in to her whims and fantasies. Pawel loved Kaska, and Dorota was aware of their relationship. To forcefully build a relationship with him, she threatened to ruin Kaska’s career if he rejected her.

Realizing how obsessive Dorota was becoming of him, he told her that he would report her to the university for stalking and molesting a student. He got out of her car and accused her of being selfish and mentally unstable. Dorota felt insulted and could not accept the fact that she was failing to get hold of the person she had been dreaming about. In that moment of rage and rejection, she drove the car over him. She informed her husband about it, and he advised her to leave the body. Dorota attempted to take her life after the incident, but she was rescued by Emil. The situation left a scar on the couple. They were involved in a murder, but they never heard of Pawel ever again.

What Happened To Pawel And Kaska?

While Emil and Dorota believed that they had left Pawel to die, they did not know that their son had followed them that night. Jan followed Dorota after overhearing their argument about Pawel. Jan knew from a young age that his parents were not loyal to one another, and that affected him deeply. He would always suspect his father and his mother of cheating on their relationship. He wanted to find out what his mother was up to, and that was when he witnessed his mother run her car over her lover. As Emil and Dorota left the scene, Jan walked up to Pawel and helped him get into his car. He sheltered Pawel and provided him with the necessary treatment. When Pawel asked him why he chose to treat him in his house, Jan said that Pawel, in a subconscious state, had told him he did not wish to be admitted to the hospital to stay away from a police case. Pawel did not know what to trust. While he was grateful to Jan for helping him out, he could not help but doubt his intention. One night, when Jan threw a party at his house, Pawel noticed Kaska there. By the time he ran down to greet her, she had left in her car. Jan stopped Pawel and told him that the girl he was chasing was his fiancé. Pawel was caught off-guard; he did not know that Kaska was already in a relationship with another man. Jan lied to Pawel because he knew that Kaska and Pawel were lovers, and he had started to grow an interest in her. He was aware that by calling her his fiancé, he would be able to keep Pawel away from her.

Pawel vanished within a few days after the incident. He took off without informing anyone where he was going. Kaska tried to contact him several times, but he never responded to her calls or texts. He secretly met the director of the university to discuss his future. He was informed that he had to be transferred to another university because of Dorota. Emil knew about his wife’s affair and asked the director to make sure that he no longer studied there. The university director warned him about the odd couple, advising him to stay away from them and continue his studies at another university. Pawel tried to talk to Kaska, but he heard her talk over the phone with Jan and did not wish to interfere in her relationship. He was ashamed of himself for falling prey to Professor Dorota. He did know what to say to Kaska, and the fact that Jan’s mother tried to molest him could break her down. Even though he loved her, he could not confront her.

Kaska was Jan’s project; he knew she was pregnant when they first made love, even though she did not disclose it at that time. He wanted to experience the joy of raising a family, even if the child was not his. Kaska could not reject his proposal. She had tried to contact Pawel and even visited his father, but he never considered showing up. Kaska believed that Jan would provide a father figure to her child, and she agreed to raise the baby with him. While Jan intended to have the perfect family, he knew from early on that it would be far from it. He cheated on Kaska after he discovered that she was contacting Pawel even after they had a wedding date fixed. Jan was just like his parents; he was obsessed with Kaska even after knowing that she loved Pawel, the man he pushed away from her life. He was ready to achieve his goal at the cost of Kaska’s happiness.

But on their wedding day, Kaska could not stop thinking about Pawel. She hoped for him to show up, but he never came. She cited various reasons to delay their marriage because, deep down, she knew this was all too wrong. She could never forget the fact that she had once seen Pawel and Dorota together in a classroom sharing a kiss. But Dorota refused to share any details about Pawel; instead, she tried to poison Kaska’s mind by stating how Pawel was repulsed by her. Ultimately, her grandmother motivated her to do what she wanted instead of settling for the easier option. Meanwhile, Jan, too, realized that he was chasing the impossible and confided the truth in Kaska. He called Pawel and asked him to come to the wedding. Pawel was not sure if going to the wedding was a good idea, but his father and grandmother pushed him to go get his girl. Pawel cycled, and Kaska ran to meet her lover. They finally met in the middle of the road, just like they did the first time. Only this time, she was on the other side and was waiting for the traffic to clear to embrace him. But just as Pawel was about to cross the road, a truck crossed by, and “Family Secrets” Season 1 ended on a cliffhanger.

We could hear a drop. Therefore, it could either be Pawel or Jan (who was behind him) who met with an accident. “Family Secrets” allows the audience to choose their preferred ending. Pawel could be alive, and they could unite as they had intended to, or he could have been hit by the truck, and their love story could be in jeopardy. Or did Jan completely lose his mind and push Pawel to die? The ending could also be an indication of another season of “Family Secrets.” Though the secrets that existed between the two families are pretty much covered in this season, another season might just be wishful thinking. I feel that the cliffhanger was the best way to end the rollercoaster series.

“Family Secrets” is a 2022 Polish Comedy Crime series streaming on Netflix.

Family Secrets Review Netflix: You Would Love Every Bit of this Puzzling Polish Show

Ever since I began my regular binge-watching spree, I haven’t come across a convoluted romantic or comedy series. Only thrillers or suspenseful shows have had that privilege.

As a result, I had ceased to expect something of that sort. However, a new Polish show on Netflix, Family Secrets, promises to be the curtain raiser. It is a romantic drama that aims to be emotionally invigorating.

Here’s my Family Secrets review, from which you can take the right cues and decide whether to stream the show or not.

Table of Contents

Family Secrets Review Summary

Having a convoluted storyline, Family Secrets is a crazy show that demands your immediate attention. Keep reading to know how it fares in various aspects.

Family Secrets Synopsis

On the verge of getting married, Kaska recalls how it all began. In the process, some of the most eccentric truths about her family and her lover are revealed.

family secrets movie reviews

Directed by Lukasz Ostalski, Family Secrets stars Eliza Rycembel (Kaska), Izabela Kuna (Malgorzata), Malgorzata Mikolajczak (Alicja), Piotr Pacek (Pawel), Bartosz Gelner (Jan), Edyta Olszowka (Dorota), Pawel Delag (Emil), Marek Kalita (Marek), Adrian Zaremba (Robert), Agnieszka Suchora (Teresa), Marcin Korcz (Dawid), and Alma Asuai (Anka), among others.

What Works for Family Secrets?

The idea behind Family Secrets is not entirely new. However, it is the presentation that makes the difference. You must have seen a hundred times secrets in a family unraveling on the screen. Also, love stories with a tricky base are common in today’s times.

What Family Secrets does is it goes on to blend the plot and sub-plots together. In the process, the show derives startling confusion, enriching humor, and mixed emotions from the story.

For a romantic drama, Family Secrets’ narration is way above the rest. The show takes a different route when it could have simply embarked on a straightforward depiction. Family Secrets ensures you are never lazy or dreary while watching.

family secrets movie reviews

You would be hooked to the screen like you are streaming a suspense drama instead of a rom-com. Moreover, the different perspectives from which the makers have narrated the story are commendable.

The screenplay of Family Secrets is stunning. Initially, I found it hard to catch up, simply because I wasn’t expecting the show to be twisting. However, gradually I found comfort in the zigzag of this Polish drama on Netflix.

Then came a time when I was utterly smitten by its crazy screenplay. Family Secrets grows on you on the back of a scintillating plot and fresh narration. Add the stimulating background music to the list too.

You cannot have an enthralling show without an intelligent story. The tale of Family Secrets effortlessly forces you to feel for the characters. It creates a mess, cleans it, and then creates another mess. A lot is there to admire in the eight-episode-long Polish series.

family secrets movie reviews

The creators have managed to find the right spots in the story to cut and release the flashback scenes. Nothing feels superficial, and you will mostly relate to the events onscreen. In fact, I would call the story ‘quirky’ and ‘off-beat’ solely because of its screenplay-led storyline.

If the pace is not up to the mark, even a good story has the potential to fail. For example, the recently released Under Her Control. It had a novel concept but was let down by a slow speed. Thankfully, Family Secrets maintains a brisk pace consistently.

The quick narration helps it to be the apple of your eye.

Performances

Eliza Rycembel, as Kaska, braces you with a powerful act in Family Secrets. A young actress, Eliza takes complete control of the narration and allows the story to revolve around her. Her nuanced skills make way for a thumping experience for the viewers. Moreover, I loved how she reacted to the vulnerabilities of the character.

family secrets movie reviews

Izabela Cuna plays Malgorzata (Malgosia) in the Polish series. It is all about drama when she is on the screen. Cuna makes everything funny and laughable. Sometimes, we focus so much on serious characters in the film that the ones bringing fun are sidelined. In Family Secrets, Izabela Cuna’s impromptu expressions keep the joy alive.

Malgorzata Mikolajczak as Alicja makes amends with the surroundings. Though she is primarily run-of-the-mill, I cannot forget her intensely emotional scenes. Her handling of the script is a thing to appreciate.

Piotr Pacek as Pawel brings affability to the table. The honest endeavors of his character stay with you for a while after the show ends. His infectious smile and broad expressions elevate things further for Family Secrets.

family secrets movie reviews

I will remember Bartosz Gelner for his body language as Jan. Everything he does in Family Secrets is dubious. Still, you can never get enough of him. The agitated version of Gelner is more endearing than the normal one.

Edyta Olszowka as Dorota conceals herself initially, but when the time comes, there’s no stopping her. She twists the plot with grace and ensures you are never bored.

Pawel Delag, as Emil, is another swashbuckling performer. He falls in the complete gray zone showcasing the true version of most males in the world. You won’t like his character, but his acting proficiency cannot be questioned.

Adrian Zaremba, as Robert, doesn’t get too much time on the screen. However, his significance in the plot is very high. The actor brings style and delivers a calculated performance.

What Doesn’t Work for Family Secrets?

Confusing timelines.

As I have mentioned earlier, it was tough to follow the timelines in Family Secrets. What is it? A time travel show? That’s how I would react initially. The past is at the epicenter of the story. Only a minuscule proportion of the runtime is allotted to the present.

family secrets movie reviews

However, what is complex is that the flashbacks don’t leap backward evenly. It goes back eight months, then seven months, then again eight, then five, and so on. You would find it too much to handle.

But the magical thing is you would never be bored. Therefore, I would suggest you to not focus much on the timeline and simply enjoy what’s happening in the story. That’s what I did.

Family Secrets is a must-watch show. I would strongly suggest you stream it right away. The biggest pro of the series is the novel narration.

Netflix’s Family Secrets: Is the Polish Show Inspired by a True Story?

of Netflix’s Family Secrets: Is the Polish Show Inspired by a True Story?

Netflix’s ‘Family Secrets,’ AKA ‘Gry Rodzinne,’ is a Polish comedy series that revolves around medical student Kaska’s wedding to wealthy plastic surgeon Janek. The former is heavily pregnant and considers him her second choice for a husband. As the events leading toward the ceremony unfold, viewers are greeted with multiple flashbacks that go a long way in explaining the mindsets of the bride, the groom, and their family members. With multiple lies and deceptions coming to light, it becomes questionable whether the wedding will happen at all.

Starring talented actors like Eliza Rycembel and Pawel Delag, the series is a chaotically hilarious story that one can’t resist being invested in. Naturally, many have expressed their curiosity regarding the show’s inspiration and possible connection to real-life events. If you are in the same boat, let’s explore the reality behind the tale of the disastrous wedding, shall we?

Family Secrets is a Work of Fiction

No, ‘Family Secrets’ is not based on a true story. The series was penned by Agnieszka Pilaszewska, whose other writing credits include ‘Recipe for Life’ and ‘Ultraviolet.’ The eight episodes in the show’s premiere season are directed by Łukasz Ostalski, who is also known for his work in ‘Mother’ and ‘Don’t Worry About Me.’ The trainwreck of a story written by Pilaszewska and adapted by Ostalski provides the viewers with a familiar feeling that one cannot help but relate to.

family secrets movie reviews

The doubts plaguing Kasia regarding her wedding are one of the most prominent resonating elements in the show. The man she does want to marry is not someone she can wed. However, her circumstances as a pregnant woman make her more amenable to marrying another man who theoretically appears to be the perfect partner for her. The variations of this particular trope are quite common in shows and movies.

Characters like Rachel Green from ‘ Friends ‘ and Victoria from ‘ How I Met Your Mother ‘ are some of the most well-known television brides that left their nuptials midway. Despite the comedic nature of the series, Kasia’s moments of regret before her wedding mirrors the indecision that many have faced in real-life. The show depicts how the practicality of marriage forces the protagonist to swallow her feelings. This is similar to the situation that many likely find themselves in at least once in their life.

family secrets movie reviews

Additionally, the sheer amount of drama that comes from the families of the bride and the groom is hard to beat. Many of the eccentric characters on the show may remind viewers of some of their own relatives in one way or another. Although, as expected, the traits have been exaggerated for entertainment and the story’s requirements. Even some of the events that take place in the narrative can individually be seen in real-life but combined reveal a mess of a family.

One can easily surmise that despite the dramatic and fictional nature of the plot of ‘Family Secrets,’ the story does have certain elements and characters that some in the audience might relate to. From heartbreak to indecision, the show presents an exaggerated version of people and events that can indeed be traced to reality in one way or another.

‘the horizon experiment: moon dogs’ – tananarive due & kelsey ramsay unleash werewolf horror comic.

' src=

Award-winning writer Tananarive Due ( The Reformatory ) and rising star artist Kelsey Ramsay  ( Dark Spaces: Good Deeds ) join forces for The Horizon Experiment: Moon Dogs , a new werewolf horror comic that’s coming soon from Image Comics.

Moon Dogs is part of The Horizon Experiment series of one-shot comics, which are essentially “the equivalent of TV pilots, with the goal of launching full series based on demand.”

Hitting shelves in November, Moon Dogs is the third comic in The Horizon Experiment series of one-shots, all centering on original protagonists from marginalized backgrounds set in a popular genre, led by Eisner and Harvey Award-winning The Good Asian and Infidel creator Pornsak Pichetshote .

Each comic in the line is a diverse take on a popular genre or beloved character, and Moon Dogs  follows a family of Black Lycanthropes of East African descent.

Co-edited by Pichetshote and award-winning editor Will Dennis ( Somna, Gideon Falls ), The Horizon Experiment: Moon Dogs follows a Black family of lycanthropes of East African descent—who call themselves Moon Dogs—as older sister Nala, her parents, and her boyfriend try to protect her teen brother Kai as he gets caught in the middle of a burgeoning war between a savage pack of werewolves and the Miami police force. After a violent attack, Miami locals are starting to learn that werewolves are not just a myth, and Nala’s family—who are minorities within a minority—find themselves drawn into a very dangerous situation.

Moon Dogs marks Due’s first solo full-length writing endeavor in comics; an acclaimed fiction writer, Due has won an NAACP Image Award, World Fantasy Award, a British Fantasy Award, and much more. She’s joined by breakout artist Ramsay in her first Image Comics series.

The horror one-shot features stunning colors by José Villarrubia and sharp letters by Jeff Powell .

“As a writer who is known for novels and short stories—and who has written screenplays—delving into comics has been the best of both worlds: granting me the immediacy and freedom to tell stories my way, and the benefit of working with talented collaborators to bring the images to life on the page,” said Due. “ Moon Dogs is an homage to my roots in Miami, where I grew up and worked as a newspaper reporter. Anyone who has been to Miami knows that its eclectic population is the perfect home for undercover werewolves—like, OF COURSE.”

Continued Due, “With great guidance from my editors, Pornsak and Will, I wanted to tell a story of what it feels like to feel doubly marginalized—and also how we can learn to exercise power without being corrupted by it. The great thing about comics, as in Hollywood, is that the script is only the starting point for the story, so seeing the thrilling illustrations by Kelsey Ramsay and the great artistic team is like getting a movie adaptation in record time. I’m so excited to share it!”

“It wasn’t difficult deciding whether I wanted to be a part of The Horizon Experiment . An innovative and inspiring group of creators that are undertaking something original and exciting, you say? It was a fast yes for me. Tananarive’s vivid and character-rich Moon Dogs script solidified that decision too—it made me feel like I was right there in Miami hunched between the rival werewolf clans,” said Ramsay. “It was so much fun and such a pleasure to work on. I’m so happy this fresh take on lycanthrope horror was created by Tananarive and supported by powerhouse editors Pornsak and Will. It came together with incredible collaborators José doing colours and Jeff doing letters. It’s an honour to be a part of this project.”

“I’m jealous of readers discovering Tananarive and Kelsey’s work for the first time. Her latest novel was praised by no less than Stephen King and now she’s bringing her uniquely intimate mythology building skills and lyrical prose to comics,” said Pichetshote. “Meanwhile, in a very short time, Kelsey has rocketed up every comics editor’s radar to the degree you’ll be seeing her in non-stop high-profile projects soon. So, watching these two combine their awesome talents to create something distinctly unique has been an utter delight. I can’t wait for readers to discover the world of Moon Dogs.”

The Horizon Experiment: Moon Dogs #1 will be available at comic book shops on November 20 , as well as digital platforms including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, and Google Play.

Three generations of women spend an emotionally fraught weekend together in Family Secrets, an NBC made-for-TV movie starring Maureen Stapleton, Stefanie Powers (who devised the story later adapted into a teleplay by Leonora Thuna) and Melissa Gilbert. Ostensibly it's the story of single mom Jessie Calloway (Powers) and her eighteen-year-old daughter Sara (Gilbert) spending a few days helping the family matriarch/grandmother, Maggie Lukauer (Stapleton), clean forty years' worth of detritus out of her house in preparation for a move to a smaller apartment, but the get-together soon unearths painful memories and also reveals new fractures as the women discuss divorce, infidelity, premarital sex, a potentially life-threatening illness (spoiler alert: it's actually not) and Sara's lingering concerns that she's not ready…

I came for slicked-back hair Spader but ended up enjoying this movie. The family secrets aren’t as scandalous as I was anticipating, but that didn’t prevent them from being effective when they’re revealed. The screenplay mines plenty of interesting nuggets and insights into who these women are, and I actually feel fond of them.

Nevertheless, Spader is gorgeous in this. I think the Spader-web-a-thon is making me fall in love...and this is moving too fast, so I think I need a break.

Emilio

Review by Emilio ★★½

If you read the plot, you pretty much know that you’re in for a dysfunctional family drama. This one is elevated by some strong performances and an appearance from the James Spader , in an early role.

This is an okay made-for-television film. It’s pretty harmless and is something that I could see being enjoyed by mothers and daughters.

NOTE: As of January 17, 2020, Family Secrets is currently streaming for free on Amazon Prime.

Family Secrets – Season 1 Episode 1 Recap & Review

The big day.

Episode 1 of Family Secrets begins with a pregnant woman dressed in a wedding gown running in the streets. She looks lost and someone keeps calling after her.  The scene cuts and viewers are taken to five years back, the same woman is running in the streets. Her name is Kaśka and she just got into med school and is excitedly trying to contact her family and share the good news.

She is absentmindedly on her phone and doesn’t notice she is at a railway crossing. This is when Pawel shows up at the nick of time and saves her from being run over by a train.

Fast forward and we are back on the wedding day. The wedding guests are getting antsy as Kaśka is running late. The groom Janeczek is worried that Kaśka is having second thoughts while the best man tries to solve the mystery of the father of Kaśka’s unborn child instead of finding out why she is late.

Meanwhile, Kaśka and her sister Alicja are back in their apartment . Alicja is trying to get Kaśka ready and to the wedding venue but she has locked herself in the bathroom and  Alicja is worried she might want to call the wedding off.

In the bathroom, Kaśka is having a flashback of her second run-in with Pawel at a party for the first-year medical students, and it turns out they are studying at the same medical school. They instantly connect, having fun and dancing the night away.

The scenes alternate between flashbacks and the current time. Kaśka decides to leave the bathroom and have the wedding. On the way, she has a flashback to seven months before the wedding. She is walking at night soaking in the rain, crying, and unable to reach Pawel on the phone. Her mom kicked her out of the house and she went to her sister’s place.

The next day, Kaśka is yet to hear from Pawel even though she left him a message on his phone. We learn that  Kaśka is seeing a new guy and Alicja is eager to know all about this new man.  Unfortunately,  Kaśka is not willing to tell her. Kaśka is still trying to reach Pawel and is frustrated she can’t reach him and he has not called back.

After her class, Kaśka runs into her Professor who offers to give her a lift as they discuss the specialty Kaśka has chosen. Kaśka accepts the offer but says she doesn’t wish to discuss her specialty. On the way, the professor picks up her husband and in a twist of events, Kaśka and her husband know each other.

We are transported back to the present at Kaśka’s wedding and the choir is tired from singing to distract the guests. The professor and her husband are part of the guests and they are arguing and the professor alludes to an illicit relationship her husband had and an agreement they made. In the midst of all this, Kaśka finally arrives, much to the relief of everyone.

As she arrives at the wedding, Kaśka has another flashback of how she met Janeczek, the man she is about to marry. They met by coincidence after being introduced to each other by Alicja’s boyfriend, Robert. Janeczek is Robert’s best friend and in another twist, he is the son of Kaśka’s professor.

She also has a flashback of the fight she had with her mom seven months ago. Her mother has decided not to show up at her wedding.

Back at the wedding, Kaśka is having second thoughts and the episode ends with her walking away from Janeczek.

The Episode Review

This show perfectly utilizes time frames to tell the story and by the looks of it, is a juicy one. This is the first episode and there are many questions already, the burning one being the identity the father to Kaśka’s baby . Is it Pawel or the man about to officially be her father-in-law? Why exactly are they getting married with all this mess going on?

Either way, I hope we will be getting some of these questions answered in the next episodes. The show so far seems promising and it looks like things are just beginning to unravel at the wedding. The episode is certainly tantalizing and makes you curious about what will happen next.
