Zurich Graduate School in Mathematics

Welcome at ZGSM

The Zurich Graduate School in Mathematics is a joint venture of the department of mathematics at ETH (D-MATH) and the Institute of Mathematics at University Zurich (I-MATH). Collaborating closely in research fields and programs in the past, the departments founded the Graduate School in 2003 to offer a common and internationally recognized PhD-education in all major areas of mathematics and hence extend and enrich the sense of community.

At this time we are working on a structured PhD-program including existing activities such as the Zurich Graduate Colloquium in Mathematics, several International Research Training Groups as well as graduate courses, research seminars, lectures, workshops, summer schools and conferences. The close cooperation with the FIM (Forschungsinstitut für Mathematik) and further special events will provide an international and challenging atmosphere. A broad spectrum of scholary activities completes the program.

You find on this website various informations about our Graduate School such as its academic programm and the online application form.

All of us in the Graduate School wish you good fortune as you pursue your advanced degree, and we hope you will contact us if we can help you along the way. Graduate study is exhilarating and life-changing.

Sincerely, Prof. Thomas Kappeler, Prof. Michael Struwe Directors of the Zurich Graduate School in Mathematics

The Graduate Campus of the University of Zurich has been established to support PhD students and Postdocs in their scientific career. The Campus offers funding for interdisciplinary activities, access to a large network of junior researchers and organizes courses, e.g. on transferable skills.

In a joint effort of the research groups at the Department of Mathematics at ETH (D-MATH) and the Institute of Mathematics at University Zurich (I-MATH) we offer an intensive, broad and internationally recognized graduate education in mathematics.

The program consists of a wide range of graduate courses and research seminars and is complemented by the program of the Forschungsinstitut für Mathematik. Moreover, special programs are launched that include block-courses and sequences of lectures focussing on recent developments. It offers a broad spectrum of scholarly activity and a challenging and stimulating atmosphere so as to provide young researchers with an excellent base for a career in mathematical research.

In collaboration with the Institute of Mathematics at Humboldt University Berlin the Zurich Graduate School in Mathematics is participating in an International Graduate College, thus providing the students with an international framework for exchanging ideas and experiences in research and instruction.

Our Graduate School consists of faculty, graduate students, a number of postdocs and some affiliated members. It is within the obligations of all these members of the Graduate School to contribute to its scientific life and to regularly participate in the various seminars, colloquia and courses offered within the program of the school.

Zurich Lectures in Advanced Mathematics (ZLAM, grown out of Lectures in Mathematics)

(In cooperation with FIM.)

Edited by: Erwin Bolthausen (Managing Editor), Freddy Delbaen, Thomas Kappeler (Managing Editor), Christoph Schwab, Michael Struwe, Gisbert Wüstholz

Mathematics in Zurich has a long and distinguished tradition, in which the writing of lecture notes volumes and research monographs play a prominent part. The “Zurich Lectures in Advanced Mathematics” series aims to make some of these publications better known to a wider audience. The series has three main constituents: lecture notes on advanced topics given by internationally renowned experts, graduate text books designed for the joint graduate program in Mathematics of the ETH and the University of Zurich, as well as contributions from researchers in residence at the mathematics research institute, FIM-ETH. Moderately priced, concise and lively in style, the volumes of this series will appeal to researchers and students alike, who seek an informed introduction to important areas of current research.

Learning German

Most of the PhD fellowships of the Zurich Graduate School in Mathematics are teaching fellowships. Typically graduate students teach exercise classes for undergraduates in German. We expect that PhD students from abroad acqire within the first year of their studies adequate proficiency in German for teaching math classes.

As a courtesy ZGSM offers German language program for their members specially designed to aquire the needed skills in German within their first two years of study. The courses cover the international standards A1, A2 and B1. As a special feature the course at level B1 includes practice classes for teaching mathematics in German. By the end of the first respectively second year students have the possibility of taking the exam of the certificate for the level A2 respectively B1 of the Goethe Institut.

To a large extent, the courses are financially supported by the ZGSM. However we ask each participant for a financial contribution.

Our course program is a two-year program. The first year program is intensive but leaves ample time for reasearch, graduate course work and research seminars. Our aim is to enable all members of the ZGSM in relatively short time to communicate in German in daily life, thus making life in Zurich much more enjoyable.

General description

The international PhD program Mathematics der Zurich Graduate School in Mathematics (ZGSM) is organized jointly by the Institute of Mathematics (UZH) and the Department of Mathematics (ETHZ). The essential part of the program is the independent scientific research of the PhD student and the writing of the thesis on his / her research. On a regular basis, the PhD student meets with his advisor and at least once a year with his / her doctoral committee to discuss the progress of the dissertation. The program includes a curricular part of at least 12 ECTS credits. Each PhD student is free of choosing courses from the course program of the ZGSM. The advisor can also award ECTS credits for a Doctoral Studies Course which includes activities such as articipating at a summer school. Moreover, as part of their doctoral studies, PhD students teach an average of 50 hours per semester, including teaching recitation classes or proctoring exams.

Admission requirements

Admission to doctoral study is governed by the ordinance on admission to studies at the University of Zurich (Verordnung über die Zulassung an der Universität Zürich VZS). The main requirement for admission to doctoral study is a Master's degree from a university or an equivalent degree. Each PhD project must receive approval from a professor at the Faculty of Science or from a person who has the right to confer a PhD at the Faculty of Science. There is no general right to be granted admission to a PhD program. Admission may be made contingent on conditions and/or restrictions in the form of additional coursework. Conditions must be met prior to admission to doctoral study; restrictions may be fulfilled during doctoral study. Coursework required to meet conditions and/or restrictions may not exceed a total of 60 ECTS credits; requirements are specified according to the demands of the subject in which the PhD thesis will be written. The Vice Dean of Studies decides on admission, on recognition of similar degrees, and on conditions and/or additional requirements that may apply. As a rule, the language of instruction in the PhD programs is English. All applicants whose native language is not English, or whose prior studies have not been conducted in English, are required to provide proof of sufficient knowledge of English.

Physical Oceanography

Phd students, duncan p dale (fgs).

Enlarged view: Duncan Dale

I am a PhD student from the UK with an Earth Sciences background with extensive experience in geology and geochemistry. Coming from a maritime nation, I have always had a deep fascination with the ocean, which I understand to be the engine of Earth surface geochemistry and have oriented my work and studies towards it whenever possible. Having studied ancient changes to ocean geochemistry for many years, I am excited to now be directly measuring and assessing the changes happening today to this potential driver of climate change.

My contribution to the Group is in understanding the ocean movements in the Subpolar North Atlantic: the seas between Norway and Greenland and particularly the vicinity of Iceland where there are important highways of ocean circulation into and out of the Arctic. I am using anthropogenic radionuclides such as 129 I and 236 U to trace the complex ocean circulations in this key region to better understand the inputs, outputs and internal dynamics of this crucial Arctic gateway.

I am a PhD student from Germany, with a big interest in ocean science. I’m studying chemical tracer distribution in the subpolar north Atlantic, from Portugal to Greenland and the Labrador Sea. I want to better understand the pathways and timescales of water mass circulation to be able to provide further information on the future ocean in a changing climate. Therefore, I am using the anthropogenic radionuclides 129I and 236 U as well as the 14C as “atomic buoy” to trace water masses, which are important for our climate. Further, as a chemist by training, I am fascinated by bridging orders of magnitude in size, from atoms to global scale processes.

I’m a paleoceanographer by training, and I have previously used the radiogenic isotopes of Nd, Sr, Pb and Hf to trace sediment weathering and ocean transport during both the Cretaceous and the Last Glacial Maximum using TIMS and MC-ICPMS. My interest lies in applying these more traditional tracers to the present with our new transient tracers 129 I and 236 U to trace ocean circulation through the Arctic. The goal is to better understand transport processes and mixing regimes across the Amerasian Basin and the wider Arctic Ocean, particularly in the context of the ongoing "Atlantification" of the Arctic as a result of climate change.

My research is dedicated to unraveling ocean circulation dynamics in the Arctic Ocean, with a particular emphasis on the Fram Strait—the main water gateway between the Arctic and North Atlantic Ocean. The Arctic Ocean is a focal point due to its accelerated warming, which has unprecedented implications on many different levels, such as altering circulation regimes. My goal is to expand our knowledge of timescales, pathways, and water mass mixing within these circulation regimes. To this purpose, we use various tracers in the group as a type of tracking device for water masses. To measure and study these tracers, we engage in research expeditions to remote locations to collect water samples. Through my work, I aspire to contribute valuable insights to the urgent challenge of climate change.

Targeted at academics, the SoC Symposium convenes international researchers, city, and industry leaders to share their scientific insights and methodologies on tackling urban challenges.

Panel 1: Science of Climate Adaptive Cities

Climate change and the escalating challenges posed by rising temperatures, sea-level rise, and extreme weather events, require cities to adapt the way its planned, designed and managed. The complexity of the urban ecosystem requires the cities to employ integrated solutions rooted in science, technology and partnership with stakeholders, to address both the short-term challenges and impacts of climate change, and the long-term sustainability for a resilient, adaptive city that thrive in the face of climate change. The science of climate adaptive cities continually evolves, driven by ongoing research, innovation, and collaboration among experts from diverse fields, and this session will focus on how cities are employing science to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

eth zurich math phd students

In keeping with tradition, this year's Master's celebration began with a poster exhibition featuring posters on all the work in the two degree programs. This was accompanied by coffee and cake, and the graduates had the opportunity to present their work to their relatives and friends.

The subsequent celebration took place in the Audimax, which was full as usual. The Master's ceremony was opened by Prof. Michael Siegrist, Director of Studies in Food Science. In the keynote address that followed, Ariane Bulant, who completed her Master's degree in Food Science in 2017, gave the graduates some thoughts to take with them and advised them to activate their energy and take their first step into professional life, however small, without hesitation. The beer served at the apero came from her own small brewery.

After the keynote speech, a total of seven prize winners received their awards:

  • Agricultural Sciences: Fiona Stewart-Smith
  • Food Science: Jiatong Nie
  • Food Science: Natalie Kallay
  • Hochdorf Prize for a master's thesis in Food Science : Katrin Müller
  • SGLWT Prize for a master's thesis in Food Science, focus on Food Technology : Thomas Mair
  • Wilhelm Schaumann Prize for a master's thesis in Agricultural Sciences : Pascal Urscheler
  • Hans Vontobel Prize for an outstanding doctoral thesis : Gregor Perich

As always, the highlight of the ceremony was the congratulatory sequence in which the graduates were honored (55 in Agricultural Sciences and 54 in Food Science).

Natalie Kallay, a graduate in Food Science, and Ramon Winterberg, a graduate in Agricultural Sciences, hosted the ceremony in a highly professional and entertaining manner. And the Lucerne duo "RUN" provided the musical accompaniment with their unmistakable style, earning much applause. The band even got the whole audience in the Audimax to sing along to their last song.
