In the end, perseverance is not just about achieving our goals. It is about who we become in the process. Essay on Perseverance

Essay on Perseverance | Meaning, Value & Importance

The word persevere means to persist in anything undertaken so as to withstand wear, tear or discouragement. It has become common parlance nowadays due to its very useful capacities to succeed in life. Read the following essay on Perseverance and its importance in life, for children and students

Essay On Perseverance | Importance of Perseverance in Life

The word Perseverance means to hold on, not to give up. The act of not giving up when faced with difficulty is what most people think it is, but there’s more than that. Perseverance goes beyond the fight against external forces; showing dogged determination in the face of adversity. It does not mean simply pushing through hard times.

Essay on Perseverance

The perseverance means hanging in there when things get tough; it is our ability to keep doing what we already know how to do, even when the voice within us begs “please stop!”

Perseverance is not just running toward your goal. It’s also running away from your fears. It’s staying the course when your Inner Critic tells you that you are not good enough. It’s being committed to your vision, even when it seems too risky or impractical.

It is resolutely plodding ahead in the face of adversity without fear of failure.  Which means anything but taking the easy way out. Perseverance is acting despite our fears and doubts , believing in ourselves when we have no reason to.

Perseverance is being more stubborn than our limitations, and more tenacious than the obstacles that face us. It is a powerful force that propels us forward in spite of ourselves.

Perseverance is the Key to Success

There are many qualities that are required to pursue a successful life, but one quality rises above all others. Perseverance is the foundation of every major success story. Perseverance exemplifies how dreams become reality; it’s the direct manifestation of our resolve and commitment to keep going, even in the face of adversity.

Perseverance is what helps us get up after being knocked down, it is the fuel that keeps our dreams alive. If you want to be successful at anything in life, you must have perseverance.

Successful people are obsessed with success, but they are even more obsessed with staying on top once they accomplish something great. They have a need to keep succeeding. It is perseverance that fuels this obsession, and it is their ability to fail, lose and fight even harder for what they want which makes them unstoppable.

Success comes as a result of commitment, not as a destination. And the only way to achieve such high levels of success is through absolute and unwavering dedication.

Perseverance is what allows you to overcome the challenges that face you. It’s not just about getting through hard times, it’s also about helping you stick with your goals even when things get tough.

Perseverance is turning obstacle into opportunity. Obstacles are great for making us stronger and more resourceful than we thought we could ever be. Perseverance might not guarantee success, but it certainly guarantees that you will never fail for lack of trying.

Developing Perseverance

Perseverance cannot be developed overnight, it gets built up gradually through trial and error. It nullifies the procrastination and laziness.  It does not come from reading a book or from listening to motivational speeches.

You must start small and work your way up, you must give it time and effort to be able to succeed. It’s okay if you fail over and over again, but never give up. The more mistakes we make and the closer we get to failure, the closer we also get to triumph and glory. We must learn not to shy away from challenges that cross our path, but rather, to embrace them.

Understanding what perseverance is, and learning how to develop it are crucial steps in our journey of becoming successful. If you want to achieve anything worthwhile in life, you must be able to maintain your focus when the obstacle inevitably crosses your path. It is only by means of consistency you may be able to reach at your goal in life

Perseverance in Psychology: Meaning, Importance & Books

Perseverance in Psychology

In the Values in Action Inventory of Strengths , perseverance is defined as “ finishing what one starts; persevering in a course of action despite obstacles; ‘getting it out the door’; taking pleasure in completing tasks .”

It is closely related to a range of other concepts including resilience, motivation, drive, determination, grit, passion, and conscientiousness.

Various studies have shown that perseverance is an essential quality for success in life (Duckworth, 2016). It often tops aptitude and raw talent and is a more accurate predictor of achievement.

Our ability to stick with our tasks, goals, and passions is vital. Persevering entails effort and practice. It also involves our ability to learn from failure and try again when thrown off our horses until we get thrown off no more (Dweck, 2017).

Before you continue, we thought you might like to download our three Strengths Exercises for free . These detailed, science-based exercises will help you or your clients realize your unique potential and create a life that feels energized and authentic.

This Article Contains:

What is perseverance in psychology, perseverance as a character strength, 5 real-life examples of perseverance, the link between perseverance and resilience, ways to improve perseverance, 4 books on the topic, positivepsychology.com helpful resources, a take-home message.

We can understand perseverance as a continuous drive to reach our goals and improve our skills and performance through persistent effort. It is a form of purposefulness and goal-orientation , which requires long-term commitment and discipline. It is fueled by passion.

While perseverance is distinct from motivation and determination, it includes elements of both. As Angela Duckworth’s research has shown, success at something requires persistence through some form of discomfort, an ability to push through when confronted with complications (Duckworth, Kirby, Tsykayama, Berstein, & Ericsson, 2010).

In that sense, perseverance is related to our ability to delay gratification, self-regulate, and practice self-control. All of these are required to honor our commitment to a longer term goal. Perseverance means that we prioritize sustainable future rewards over short-term pleasures in the present.

Crucially, all forms of learning and mastery require perseverance (Duckworth et al., 2010; Ericsson, 2006). If we did not persist with our efforts to speak; walk; master a bike, new language, or instrument; or overcome anxieties or beliefs that hold us back, we would all remain stuck.

It would halt our cognitive, physical, and psycho-social development. There would be no progress. Persistence – another facet of perseverance – can also be understood as a personality or temperamental trait (Cloninger, Svrakic, & Przybeck, 1993). As such, it is related to effort, ambition, and perfectionism.

In the Big Five or Five-Factor Model, core aspects of perseverance map onto features of conscientiousness. Researchers such as Markus Credé argue that the notion of grit is not so different from conscientiousness, which includes goal-setting, self-discipline, orderliness, and care (Credé, Tynan, & Harms, 2017).

Perseverance as a character strength

Passion here is understood as a strong consistency of interest that provides the underlying motivation for reaching long-term goals.

In her bestselling book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance (2016), Duckworth has shown that grit is an essential quality for success in life. Although our natural talent matters, perseverance is much more critical than pure ability as a predictor of our achievement. However, most of us falsely believe that inborn talent is the core driver of success.

“ Our potential is one thing. What we do with it is quite another ,” Duckworth writes (2016, p. 17). While aptitude, skills, and a basic degree of talent are important as determiners of success, they are not as significant as hard work and trying, again and again, to improve what we do.

Duckworth has conducted numerous studies that show that people with grit are much more likely to succeed than individuals who lack it (Duckworth, Peterson, Matthews, & Kelly, 2007). These results are most evident in academic contexts, where grittier students achieve better grades, higher educational attainment levels, and greater success in competition (Duckworth & Quinn, 2009).

We can consider the combination of passion and perseverance that Duckworth describes as grit as a dispositional tendency. We might even wish to consider it a character strength . But crucially, Duckworth believes that grit can be learned . In other words, we can all practice becoming grittier and work on our ability to persevere.

Perseverance – more than inspirational words – Skillsoft

Let’s look at how perseverance can be found in practical applications.

1. J. K. Rowling

J. K. Rowling, author of the hugely successful Harry Potter series, wrote her first manuscript under great hardship. A single mother, she lived in dire poverty and depended on welfare. She used every spare minute she had for writing.

When completed, her novel was rejected by numerous agents. But she did not give up. Eventually, she found one who took her on. Soon after, her agent found a publisher, and her books became global bestsellers that have been adapted into various blockbuster movies. She is now one of the richest women in the world.

2. Thomas Edison

Another true paragon of perseverance is Thomas Edison. The inventor of the electric lightbulb, he revolutionized modern life. Edison tried relentlessly to realize his vision of the lightbulb. He failed hundreds, perhaps thousands, of times before he had his breakthrough moment.

He was reported to have said while still experimenting:

I have not failed; I’ve just found 10,000 ways to make a lightbulb that won’t work.

Crucially, then, he considered the negative results just as valuable as any positive results. Understanding what does not work, and why, was simply part of the process of eventually finding out what does. He also believed that “ Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration .”

3. Walt Disney

Walt Disney’s success, too, did not come easily. As a young man, he was fired from the local newspaper, where he worked as a cartoonist. His boss believed he lacked creativity.

An early animation company of his failed, leaving him in dire financial difficulties. At one moment in his life, when he was unable to pay his bills, he was even reported to have eaten dog food to survive.

Despondent and with nothing to lose, Walt Disney traveled to Hollywood. There, too, things were not easy. He faced a barrage of rejection, was told he would never make it, and that Mickey Mouse – his passion project – was destined to fail. Well, it did not.

4. Henry Ford

Another great icon, Henry Ford, is known as the inventor of the assembly line, and it is he who revolutionized industrial production. Henry Ford had gone bankrupt numerous times before he turned the Ford Motor Company into a success.

5. Sir Richard Branson

Sir Richard Branson, who has dyslexia, struggled in school. He failed many of his exams and was considered a problem student. However, rather than dwelling on his academic challenges, he focused on his strengths .

Through grit and creativity , combined with a hefty dose of passion and excellent entrepreneurial skills, Branson is now one of the most successful businessmen in the United Kingdom.

In addition to these well-known examples, there are numerous other stories of people who have conquered great adversity, held on to their dreams, battled against the odds, and eventually achieved great successes.

Perseverance and resilience

Resilience denotes our ability to recover from difficulties, to pick ourselves up after we have encountered adversity.

The more resilient we are, the faster we can manage to return to a formerly resourceful state. It means that we do not let ourselves dwell in self-pity for too long, or else attack ourselves with self-blaming or self-sabotaging thoughts. The Japanese saying “ Fall seven, rise eight ” beautifully captures the role of resilience in grit.

Perseverance and resilience are also closely related to our ability to learn from our failures. Perseverant and resilient people deal more productively with failure.

Rather than being embarrassed or put off by it, they see it as a learning opportunity. While they will be disappointed by setbacks, they will always try to find out what went wrong. Genuinely curious about feedback, they incorporate it and adapt their behavior accordingly to avoid failing again in the future.

These people tend to have what the psychologist Carol S. Dweck calls a “ growth mindset ” rather than a “ fixed mindset .” Dweck argues that a growth mindset is defined by a “ passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when it’s not going well ” (2017, p. 7).

People with a growth mindset strongly believe in learning and continually developing their abilities. People with a fixed mindset, by contrast, believe in a predetermined set of capabilities. They think we are born with specific qualities and that these are more or less written in stone.

Naturally, people with a fixed mindset also tend to be much less optimistic about the effects of their efforts on their performance.

Angela Duckworth argues that growing grit from the inside requires four essential ingredients:

We must, first of all, follow our passion. That entails discovering what our core passions are. This process involves curiosity, trying new things, experimenting, and actively seeking to develop and stay with our interests .

Then, we have to practice . But we must practice deliberately, by honing in on our weaknesses and Achilles heels, setting challenging stretch goals, and incorporating feedback.

Purpose refers to our desire to contribute to making the world a better place and to helping others. It can be a core driving force for passion.

Hope , the fourth and final ingredient, is related to the belief that our efforts matter and that they can improve our future (Duckworth, 2016).

We can also try to foster perseverance from the outside. As parents, for example, we may wish to signal that we have high expectations and give all the support we can so that our children can reach them. This includes instilling in them a fundamental belief that they can live up to our expectations.

We should also encourage our children to do difficult things that interest them and stay (at least for a while) with the extracurricular activities they have chosen. In organizations, we can try to establish a gritty work culture that is based on similar principles: high expectations, coupled with increased support (Duckworth, 2016).

Grit The Power of Passion and Perseverance

The best book on the topic is no doubt Angela Duckworth’s New York Times bestseller Grit . Based on findings from years of passion and resilience research, it is an easy and yet gripping read.

The book combines scientific explanations with practical tips about why these findings should matter to us and how we can apply them in our own lives.

It has firmly established the concept of “grit” into the popular imagination.

2. Mindset: Changing the Way You Think to Fulfill Your Potential – Carol S. Dweck (revised edition 2017)

Mindset

Carol Dweck’s Mindset  is another classic.

Dweck explains in easy-to-follow prose the core difference between growth mindsets and fixed mindsets. The consequences of these mindsets are staggering.

She, too, bases her arguments on solid research while showing us how we can work on changing our mindset.

3. Black Box Thinking: Marginal Gains and the Secrets of High Performance – Matthew Syed (2015)

Black Box Thinking

Matthew Syed’s book goes well with Dweck’s. By drawing on numerous anecdotes and case studies, he demonstrates the crucial importance of learning from failure.

It is a prerequisite for all progress and learning processes. It is a widely accepted principle in the aviation industry, while other sectors (such as medicine) still need to develop effective principles for incorporating lessons from failure.

4. Kaizen: The Japanese Method for Transforming Habits One Small Step at a Time – Sarah Harvey (2019)

The ancient virtue of fortitude explicitly combines perseverance with courage.

Interestingly, courage is under-emphasized in modern definitions of perseverance, yet it is crucial to overcome adversity and persist when faced with obstacles.

My favorite way of integrating perseverance into my own life is via the Japanese concept of kaizen . Kaizen translates as “ good improvement ” and refers to the idea of gradual and incremental long-term improvement (Harvey, 2019).

A slow and steady approach to sustainable habit change, kaizen is a philosophy of continual improvement. It focuses on small details. In fact, no aspect of our performance is considered too small to be worthy of improvement.

The emphasis is on persistent reform rather than flamboyant revolution. In other words, kaizen encourages us simply to persevere with the task of improving ourselves, no matter how tiny the improvements may be.

Perseverance Is the Mother of Success in Learning

After several failures, Thomas Alva Edison invented the electric bulb in 1879, and he quoted “If I find 10,000 ways something won’t work, I haven’t failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward.” This shows his commitment and determination in his work which finally led to one of the most important inventions of mankind. All his life, he invented so many things which changed the lives of human beings in this world. His most famous quote, “genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration”, is still inspiring the young minds around the world. I would say that this man was my role model and inspiration. It will not be an exaggeration when I say that it is the constant determination and perseverance that has helped me to accomplish something which I yearned for – learning to speak in English fluently.

The purpose of this essay is to describe the challenges I encountered in my life in the learning process of the English language and how I overcame the challenges with my persistence and the results of my hard work. I would also like to brief on how the quality of persistence is going to benefit my future life.

I hail from the city of Chongqing, a small provincial city in the Republic of China. English was not a part of our primary school education and my first encounter with the universal language came when I was in my 7 th Grade in school, as a part of learning a foreign language. I do not belong to a family of English-speaking members and naturally my first exposure to the language was disastrous. I had to face a lot of challenges in learning the language. Almost all my classmates had previously studied the language from their family members. As a newbie, my p’s were confused with the q’s and my d’s were often replaced by b’s.

I had big problems pronouncing the English words, given my totally Chinese background, and I humiliated myself trying to speak English in front of my fellow mates. My classmates made fun of my English and started avoiding me because of my ignorance. I found it awkward to speak in English and developed a new fear of the language. I feared making mistakes and being humiliated by my classmates. This was the first challenge I faced. I resolved to learn to speak the language, correctly and fluently. To fulfill my resolution, I put aside my fears and became bold enough to start speaking English despite my chances of getting scoffed. I took every opportunity to speak English in front of the class.

To practice speaking English more, I had to create an English-speaking environment. This was again another challenge because Chongqing was not an English-speaking community. Although I learned the basics of grammar and usage in English from school, the curriculum did not hold anything about the practical aspects of English conversational skills. The way I found to practice my speaking ability was to hold a conversation to myself or my mirror image using the texts in my school curriculum.

Self-conversation was however a limited way for learning to speak. I had to find friends who could help me speak better. I made friends with those students who had good English speaking skills and used them as a benchmark to grade my language. This helped me to find my faults and strengths very precisely. I also started listening radio programs such as “voice of America” and continued practicing my speaking by imitating the sentences they had used. This helped to improve my English a lot.

With five years of constant perseverance, I made extraordinary progress in my English speaking skills. Although I was tempted to stop my work on English speaking many times, I never gave up my goal and worked harder. This has become very successful as now I excel most of my classmates in English proficiency.

What I have achieved over the last five years has brought me immense pleasure and a position in my class as good English speaker. I am no longer scoffed at by my fellow mates for my bad pronunciation. This has also taught me that with constant hard work and determination, we can win anything in life. I am sure that my persistence and determination to succeed will surely help in fulfilling most of my dreams and will lead to a successful career and life.

Perseverance Is Key To Success (Essay Sample)

https://unsplash.com/photos/hMmsCFYJBb8

Perseverance means to keep on trying until you achieve your goal. People say there is no formula to achieve success but perseverance is still one of the most key aspects to be successful in life. Perseverance is the habit of winners and a person who keeps on making consistent effort never gets disappointed. An apt saying that reads “ If at first, you don’t succeed, try, try again “perfectly captures the essence and virtue of perseverance. In this essay, I will discuss how and why perseverance is key to success.

https://unsplash.com/photos/vbuR2q56EZM

Many people believe that success is achieved through hard work, determination, and patience. I don’t disagree with them but  I must add that perseverance is also one of the key virtues to be successful in life. Perseverance means the constant or persistent struggle towards achieving the ultimate goal despite hardships and failures. Perseverance can be described as an attitude, a way of living, or a personality trait that a person develops. Perseverance can also be described as an idea, rule, discipline, or sheer willpower that doesn’t let a person call it quits. In this essay, I will discuss why perseverance is one of the most important virtues of life.

Perseverance is to strive for something of greater importance without giving in to difficulties. Perseverance is a virtue that exists in winners and not the losers. Perseverant people are usually well-disciplined, determined, and hardworking in life. Perseverance can help you achieve peace of the body and mind despite constant hardships and difficulties. Perseverance is based on the principle of trying and trying again, which means a persevering person learns from his failures.  This doesn’t let bad experiences hinder their ambitions and goals in life.

Perseverance is important because it lets you learn from your failures. Once you start learning from your failures you become a risk-taker and as time passes you develop a better understanding of how to handle the risk factor. Once people start to know how to handle risk and failures they become closer to achieving success. Perseverance and continued struggle don’t just work in any specific task, it’s a virtue that can be applied to any walk of life. Failures usually teach people the biggest lessons in life, a key characteristic, and creative ideas a person can build through perseverance can help them achieve seemingly impossible goals in life.

https://unsplash.com/photos/TngLW5BNyF8

Perseverance can help a person go beyond established boundaries. A successful man learns many lessons from different failures. Despite all the obstacles and challenges an aim in life and continued struggle towards achieving that aim ultimately makes that person win. As students pass these challenges one by one, they feel motivated and develop positive thinking that such hurdles can be passed. This patient struggle helps them develop new ways of solving the issues to succeed.

I don’t agree with people who think intelligence is a way to achieve success. Even geniuses who are lethargic and reluctant to strive and struggle fail to prosper in life. People who don’t want to consistently pursue their passion or average dream never come to know their self-worth. On the other hand, a person not so intelligent who struggles and strives for a specific goal most probably succeeds in life. However hard work doesn’t mean that a person can reach his goal immediately. It sometimes requires years of patience and struggles to achieve their dreams. Once you get there through perseverance you feel even better about yourself.

Perseverance is also very important for school or college-going kids and teenagers. Such a person who faces many failures in school life but persistently moves towards his goals quickly learns perseverance from early life. A student who learns how to deal with their failures has a better learning experience. Patience and resiliency allow students to learn self-confidence and help them stop worrying about their future. Perseverance is a learnable skill and teachers should work towards helping a student strive and struggle to learn this life skill.

In conclusion, all walks of life require perseverance. People can be very intelligent but without perseverance, the intelligent ones also fail to achieve their full potential. Always remember that the greatest life lessons are learned through failures and not success. So if you also want to be successful in life then you must embrace perseverance.

Short Essay on Perseverance Is The Key To Success – 200 Word Short Essay

https://unsplash.com/photos/nd2fFCkXWTw

A famous scholar named Pele once said that “ Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do”. I hundred percent agree with Pele on this one. Perseverance is the ability to try and try again until you achieve your goal despite hardships and failures. People, no matter how intelligent they are, can prosper in life without patience, consistency, hard work, resilience, sheer willpower, and most of all perseverance. In this essay, I will discuss why Perseverance is a key to achieving success in life.

As Pele said that success is no accident, success cannot be achieved overnight. People often misunderstand the meaning of being successful. Most people think that getting money and fame is a success but in fact, being able to achieve your goals in life is a real success. The definition of success changes from person to person but one thing is clear that perseverance is the key to success. With perseverance, any seemingly impossible goal can be achieved.

Perseverant people learn from failures, encourage adaptability, and are emotionally and mentally strong. Perseverance is the formula for success because it teaches how to become patient, focused, hard-working, resilient, and optimistic in life. Perseverance is a learnable skill and every one of us, especially students from a young age, should strive to become perseverant to be counted among successful people.

Essays On Perseverance

Perseverance is an important quality for achieving success in life. It can be defined as the ability to continue working towards a goal, even when obstacles arise and progress seems slow or difficult. People who possess perseverance are able to overcome challenges, remain focused on their long-term goals, and take pride in their accomplishments. The benefits of having perseverance are numerous. For starters, it allows individuals to develop resilience through failure and difficulty. Facing adversity often helps build character; those who persevere may be more likely to come out of difficult situations with a stronger sense of self-confidence and resilience than they entered with. Additionally, people who have developed this trait tend to find that their relationships improve because they no longer expect instant gratification or give up at the first sign of stress or conflict. By sticking with something even if it requires hard work and effort, these individuals demonstrate loyalty which can help foster trust within interpersonal relationships over time. In addition to personal benefits, persevering can lead to great achievements professionally as well. Many successful entrepreneurs attribute much of their success not only from taking risks but also from continuing forward despite any potential setbacks along the way. Perseverance also encourages us to stay motivated by providing us with short term motivation goals we must achieve in order for us reach our end goal such as developing new skills or understanding complex topics better etc.. This leads us closer towards our main objective while still allowing growth simultaneously ” both personally and professionally. Overall, being persistent pays off in many different aspects of life – whether it’s striving after your dreams professionally or overcoming everyday struggles personally – demonstrating tenacity is key component for reaching ones full potential.

Irrespective of the challenges that emerge or the time it takes you to complete the task, you persist tirelessly and pursue your set goal(s). It’s an important quality in life as it allows you to stay in the game even though everything else says it’s time to call it quits. Perseverance helps you achieve your life’s dreams, goals and vision.

Let’s look at some famous examples of perseverance and see how hard work eventually paid off for these individuals:

Shivaji Rao Gaekwad, popularly known as Rajnikanth, is one of the most renowned actors of our time. Did you know that he used to be a bus conductor? His desire to become an actor pushed him to pursue theater and eventually enter the Indian film industry.

Before Indra Nooyi joined PepsiCo as the senior vice president of corporate strategy, she worked as a receptionist. It helped her save enough money to buy formal wear and appear for interviews with confidence. In PepsiCo, her hard work and steady determination helped her drive success and she was widely recognized for her exceptional leadership skills.

Milkha Singh, also known as the Flying Sikh, became the first Indian man to compete in an Olympics athletic event. He lost his family to the brutal violence that followed the partition of India. He brought discipline and direction to his life when he joined the army and decided to compete in athletics. His determination became critical to his success.

As we can see, perseverance can do wonders and it’s one of the most important qualities of successful individuals.

Perseverance in the face of challenges indicates leadership qualities . As already highlighted in the above examples of perseverance, individuals who demonstrate perseverance are more likely to succeed in life, especially professional life. Perseverance is a sign of stepping outside your comfort zone and staying focused on your efforts. It also means that you have a growth mindset, that is, the belief that you can develop essential qualities through your efforts. This is a highly valuable quality that organizations actively seek when they’re hiring.

Here’s why you need to prioritize perseverance and take steps toward developing this quality in your life:

Leads to mastery.

You may not know how to do something, even though you’re passionate about it. It’s perseverance that’ll help you attempt and pursue something, in addition to doing your best. Rome wasn’t built in a day; you need to be patient because hard work will eventually pay off. Sustained efforts over time can even lead you to master a new skill. You can excel as long as you stay determined.

Makes You Resilient

Say you were rejected after five job interviews. You can either quit looking for a job or refuse to give up. Perseverant people don’t quit easily. They will continue to rise up to challenges and continue to work hard. Therefore, you become resilient as you power through difficulties and continue to step outside your comfort zone. You continue to grow emotionally as well.

Teaches How To Manage Crises

Perseverance teaches you how to focus on solutions instead of problems. For example, if something goes wrong, perseverant individuals will identify ways to mitigate a crisis. They know how to stay calm and carry on. In other words, they look at the bigger picture and not abandon a situation or responsibility midway.

The importance of perseverance lies in the fact that it makes you optimistic about the future. You learn not to give up because you believe that the power remains in your hand, as long as you keep at it.

The Importance Of Perseverance In Current Times

With the rise of small businesses and start-up enterprises, the scope of entrepreneurship continues to expand. However, only a few businesses take flight and succeed in establishing themselves. There are several qualities required in starting and running your own business. Some of them include ambition, intelligence and creativity but most of all, you need perseverance. Without it, sometimes, even the best among us gets it wrong.

Perseverance skills can teach you how to bounce back from disappointment or failure. If you’re a professional, consider these qualities of perseverant leaders to effectively navigate business environments and career advancement:

They Keep Asking Why

People who persevere are the ones who continue to ask ‘why’. It serves as a constant motivator and keeps you on track. It can be as simple as: why am I doing this? The more you remind yourself, the clearer your purpose gets. This is what keeps pushing you.

They Have Self-Belief

You may have heard people say: if you don’t believe in yourself, how will they? If you want to achieve anything, you need to believe in your skills and qualities. Every successful leader believes in themselves and believes in the change they want to make in the world. Fostering your self-belief can help you persevere better.

They Make Room For Vulnerability

It isn’t easy to face your failures and it especially isn’t easy to ask for help. Successful people persevere because they know how to learn from their mistakes and overcome setbacks. Instead of giving up easily, they know how to pick themselves up and ask for help. They aren’t afraid of being vulnerable and connect with others in times of need. It’s okay to share your struggles with people you can trust.

It’s important to remember that perseverance is the direct result of our habits. The more we overcome our fears and challenges, the more resilient we become.

As we’ve already established, perseverance skills are critical to workplace success. Moreover, these skills can be developed over time through patience and practice. Let’s look at several ways in which you can improve your perseverance skills:

Reject The Urge To Quit

The first step to build a perseverance mindset is to reject the urge to give up or quit. If you’re unable to accomplish something, give yourself time. Start again the next day. Remind yourself of the reason you’re doing it and the ultimate objective you want to achieve.

Create An Action Plan

A detailed action plan can help you remain focused on every objective. It should account for your journey from start to completion. The primary benefit of the plan is that it holds you accountable and helps you keep track of your progress. The more you monitor, the easier it is to stay motivated.

Prioritize Improvement

At the core of perseverance lies the act of getting out of your comfort zone. You need to make peace with the fact that you need to work on self-improvement. Establishing higher standards of excellence for yourself is a good place to start. As you continue to strengthen perseverance, you continue to grow as a well-rounded individual.

While these strategies are useful in keeping you focused on your goals, it’s equally important to accommodate things that you care for. When you’re passionate about something and enjoy doing those tasks, it’s easier to stay on track; otherwise, it may start to feel like a burden.

Perseverance is a skill that employers highly value because they need people who can power through tough circumstances. If you want to sharpen your focus and remain persistent in your efforts, Harappa’s  Practicing Excellence course can help you achieve it. The course will help you learn how to continuously improve your performance and deliver excellence consistently. Perseverance Pays Off for Student Challenge Winners

Thre children, a boy and two girls, sit on a model rock formation.

As radioisotopes power the Perseverance rover to explore Mars, perseverance “powered” three winners to write essays each year till they achieved their mission goal of winning NASA’s Power to Explore Challenge . These students explored behind the scenes at NASA's Glenn Research Center and Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC) in Cleveland after writing the top essays in the national contest.

The competition for kindergarten through 12th grade students focuses on the enabling power of radioisotopes. Students were challenged to learn how NASA has powered some of its most famous science missions and to dream up how their personal “superpower” would energize their own radioisotope-powered science mission.

Judges narrowed down over a seventeen hundred creative essays to 45 semi-finalists, who received prize packs, nine finalists, who participated in a videoconference with NASA experts, and three winners, who were awarded with a visit to NASA Glenn.

“I’m so impressed by the work of these talented young students. It’s wonderful to see their interest, innovation, and creativity at this stage in their lives. Our future is bright!

“I’m so impressed by the work of these talented young students,” said Dr. Wanda Peters, acting deputy center director at NASA Glenn. “It’s wonderful to see their interest, innovation, and creativity at this stage in their lives. Our future is bright!”

Rainie Lin , the kindergarten through fourth grade winner; Aadya Karthik , the fifth through eighth grade winner, and Thomas Liu , the ninth through 12th grade winner, toured several research facilities including the Electric Propulsion and Power Laboratory , Telescience Support Center , Graphics and Visualization Lab , and Simulated Lunar Operations Lab . Along the way, they met with engineers and researchers to learn about NASA’s missions and the technologies that are innovating exploration.

The next day students and their families traveled to GLSC, which houses NASA Glenn’s Visitor Center. Accompanied by members of NASA’s Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS) team, the group toured the visitor center and explored the many interactive displays.

“It was our pleasure to host the three student winners of The Power to Explore Challenge, and I hope that this visit will further inspire and motivate them to pursue their interests in science and exploration,” said Carl Sandifer, manager for NASA’s RPS Program. "We are so impressed by the ideas and quality of the essays submitted this year and we can’t wait to what new ideas student come up with for next year’s challenge!”

The Power to Explore Challenge asked students to learn about the RPS, one of NASA’s “nuclear batteries” it uses to explore some of the most extreme destinations in our solar system and beyond. Students then wrote about their own power to achieve goals in 250 words or less.

NASA will hold its fourth-annual Power to Explore Challenge later this fall. For more information on the challenge visit: The Power to Explore Writing Challenge homepage .

Killer nyc granny carried out murder-suicide to give son full custody of child: heartbreaking suit.

The woman who killed the mother of her granddaughter before committing suicide did so as part of a sick elaborate plot to get her Upper East Side son full custody of the 4-year-old, new court papers allege.

The disturbing Manhattan filing also reveals heartbreaking details about what life has been like for victim Marisa Galloway’s parents after the slay-suicide horror that robbed them of their daughter.

Terminally ill ex-Chicago probation officer Kathleen Leigh, 65, fatally shot Galloway — a 45-year-old special-education teacher who shared a child with Leigh’s son, Zachariah Reed — last month on a leafy Manhattan street before killing herself .

Now Galloway’s parents, Nancy and John Galloway, have filed an emergency court petition claiming Reed has run off to his Chicago “multi-million dollar home” with their beloved grandchild Lili under the pretext of “mourning” Leigh’s death and barred the Galloways from any contact — including even a video call — with the child.

Mariel Galloway with daughter Lili

“Clearly, [Reed’s] mother had a deliberate plan to kill Marisa in order to provide custody for her son,” the court papers charge. “Unfortunately, [Reed] has demonstrated an absolute intention to further those same goals of his mother as he has refused to provide us with any access to Lili at all in almost 3 weeks.”

The grandparents — who live in Cape May, NJ — are asking a Manhattan Supreme Court judge to pass on Marisa’s parenting time, hashed out in a 2022 custody agreement with Reed, to them, according to legal papers filed Friday.

They are also asking that Reed be forced to live in the Big Apple until Lili is 18 so that she can keep a close relationship with her grandparents and with her half-sister, Mariel, the 1-year-old daughter Marisa had with a sperm donor, the filing shows.

The Galloways currently have custody of Mariel, police sources have told The Post.

Nancy, in a heartbreaking affidavit, laid out the adoring and “hands on” relationship she and her husband had with Lili when they saw her two to three times a month, often for multiple nights at a time, when Marisa would often bring the kids to their Garden State home or when they visited Marisa and the girls in the city.

Nancy and John Galloway with grandkids, Mariel and Lili.

“‘When we did not see [Lili], we would Facetime almost every day,’ ” Nancy wrote in an affidavit.

Nancy and John were actively involved in raising the girl, even changing her diapers and feeding her as a baby, and as she’s grown, the grandparents each have special activities they love to do with her, the filing says.

John and Lili love gardening together, and they water the flowers and pick cherry tomatoes from his garden — which he is waiting to tend to until the girl is with him, Nancy’s affidavit says.

Marisa Galloway and Zachariah Reed

And Nancy loves to teach French to Lili and bake cakes with the child, whose “favorite part was cracking the eggs,” Nancy says in the papers.

When Nancy and Lili finished a 150-piece puzzle of the United States in just over an hour, the little girl was “so proud,” the filing says.

“While Marisa was always the best mother, we would love to be involved with all aspects of taking care of an infant, toddler, and ultimately the little girl that Lili currently is,” Nancy wrote.

Nancy said she is “extremely uncomfortable” being forced to file the petition but worried Lili would become estranged from her mom’s side of the family if they didn’t intervene.

The grandmother laid out the history of Marisa and Reed’s “tumultuous relationship” since the pair split and their “contentious” custody battle .

She claimed the pair dated before Marisa became pregnant but said their relationship ended — “driven by the interference of [Reed’s] mother.”

Marisa and Reed had lived together until she “was forced to move out … by [Reed] on July 25, 2021 because Marisa feared for her safety,” the affidavit explains.

John, Nancy and Marisa Galloway with Lili and Mariel.

The pair eventually hashed out a custody agreement over Lili on Nov. 4, 2022, where the mom had her for nine out of every 14 nights, and the other nights were Reed’s time with the girl, the court papers say.

The estranged couple also agreed they would both live within the five boroughs of New York City until Lili was out of high school unless they otherwise both agreed or were ordered by a court, the filing claims.

Their custody agreement had a provision that specified that the custody terms were “binding” on Marisa and Reed’s estates and executors if something were to happen to them, the suit says.

Nancy Galloway and Lili and Mariel.

Nancy explained in the filing that Marisa “was always very concerned with Lili having a sibling” so she decided “to take on the herculean task of having a second child with an anonymous sperm donor in order to provide Lili with either a brother or a sister.”

Lili has been so “proud” to be Mariel’s older sister, and “from the second that Mariel was born, her and Lili had a very special relationship,” Nancy says in the document.

Lili sings Mariel songs, plays with her baby sister with their “stuffies” and draws her pictures, including of their family, Nancy says in the affidavit.

When Mariel would wake up from a nap, Lili would feed her Cheerios or bananas and would do funny dances and sing for her, the filing says.

Lili and Mariel.

“On July 26, 2024, all of our lives were changed forever,” a heartbroken Nancy wrote.

That day, Marisa — a former volunteer track coach at Fordham University and a board member of the Central Park Track Club — had packed her bags and put Mariel into her Honda Civic to go spend five nights with her parents in New Jersey. She was going to pick up Lili from her father before heading out of town, the court papers say.

But Leigh approached Marisa as she was loading something into the trunk and shot her once in the back of the head and again in the back before turning the gun on herself.

Leigh had been terminally ill with cancer and had been living with Reed at his East 79th Street apartment, where Lili would also stay during Reed’s visitation time.

Kathleen Leigh on surveillance camera.

Before her heinous crime, Leigh scrawled a seven-page letter “For Police” describing how she felt Marisa was trying to alienate Lili from Reed and saying she suspected Marisa of abusing Lili — despite child services clearing Marisa in two probes launched by Reed and the accounts of friends and family that Marisa was nothing but a doting mother.

“She took away the child’s mother in order to make her son happy … it’s shocking,” a law-enforcement source had told The Post of Leigh right after the murder-suicide. “I’ve seen a lot of s–t but this is Biblical s–t.”

Nancy says in court papers that she and her husband have asked Reed “numerous” times since the horror to speak with Lili, as they are concerned with how she is doing after losing her mother and over concerns that the young sisters need to comfort each other — but Reed hasn’t even let them see her on video calls.

“We have no idea how [Lili] is doing, or what [Reed] has even told Lili about her mother,” the court papers say. “This is beyond unacceptable and must be rectified immediately.”

The grandparents say they are so committed that they will remain at Marisa’s apartment on East 86th Street during weekday visitations with Lily. They are also demanding Lili has daily video calls with Mariel.

The Galloways’ lawyer and the lawyer who represented Reed in his initial custody case with Marisa both did not immediately return Post requests for comment. A working number for Reed could not immediately be found.

Potential Evidence of Life Discovered on Mars by NASA’s Perseverance Rover

NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover Robotic Arm

NASA ’s Perseverance rover has discovered an intriguing rock on Mars , named Cheyava Falls, showcasing potential signs of ancient life due to its unique chemical signatures and structural features.

This finding, supported by the presence of organic compounds and distinct color patterns suggestive of microbial activity, fuels ongoing research to determine Mars’s habitability.

Discovery of Cheyava Falls Rock

A vein-filled rock is catching the eye of the science team of NASA’s Perseverance rover. Nicknamed “Cheyava Falls” by the team, the arrowhead-shaped rock contains fascinating traits that may bear on the question of whether Mars was home to microscopic life in the distant past.

Cheyava Falls Rock Leopard Spots

Analysis by instruments aboard the rover indicates the rock possesses qualities that fit the definition of a possible indicator of ancient life. The rock exhibits chemical signatures and structures that could possibly have been formed by life billions of years ago when the area being explored by the rover contained running water. Other explanations for the observed features are being considered by the science team, and future research steps will be required to determine whether ancient life is a valid explanation.

Sample Collection and Exploration Strategy

The rock — the rover’s 22nd rock core sample — was collected on July 21, as the rover explored the northern edge of Neretva Vallis, an ancient river valley measuring a quarter-mile (400 meters) wide that was carved by water rushing into Jezero Crater long ago.

“We have designed the route for Perseverance to ensure that it goes to areas with the potential for interesting scientific samples,” said Nicola Fox, associate administrator, Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “This trip through the Neretva Vallis riverbed paid off as we found something we’ve never seen before, which will give our scientists so much to study.”

Cheyava Falls Rock Sample

Multiple scans of Cheyava Falls by the rover’s SHERLOC (Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman & Luminescence for Organics & Chemicals) instrument indicate it contains organic compounds. While such carbon-based molecules are considered the building blocks of life, they also can be formed by non-biological processes.

“Cheyava Falls is the most puzzling, complex, and potentially important rock yet investigated by Perseverance,” said Ken Farley, Perseverance project scientist of Caltech in Pasadena. “On the one hand, we have our first compelling detection of organic material, distinctive colorful spots indicative of chemical reactions that microbial life could use as an energy source, and clear evidence that water — necessary for life — once passed through the rock. On the other hand, we have been unable to determine exactly how the rock formed and to what extent nearby rocks may have heated Cheyava Falls and contributed to these features.”

Other details about the rock, which measures 3.2 feet by 2 feet (1 meter by 0.6 meters) and was named after a Grand Canyon waterfall, have intrigued the team, as well.

How Rocks Get Their Spots

In its search for signs of ancient microbial life, the Perseverance mission has focused on rocks that may have been created or modified long ago by the presence of water. That’s why the team homed in on Cheyava Falls.

“This is the kind of key observation that SHERLOC was built for — to seek organic matter as it is an essential component of a search for past life,” said SHERLOC’s principal investigator Kevin Hand of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, which manages the mission.

Running the length of the rock are large white calcium sulfate veins. Between those veins are bands of material whose reddish color suggests the presence of hematite, one of the minerals that gives Mars its distinctive rusty hue.

Cheyava Falls Mars

Unusual Mineral Patterns and Their Implications

When Perseverance took a closer look at these red regions, it found dozens of irregularly shaped, millimeter-size off-white splotches, each ringed with black material, akin to leopard spots. Perseverance’s PIXL (Planetary Instrument for X-ray Lithochemistry) instrument has determined these black halos contain both iron and phosphate.

“These spots are a big surprise,” said David Flannery, an astrobiologist and member of the Perseverance science team from the Queensland University of Technology in Australia. “On Earth, these types of features in rocks are often associated with the fossilized record of microbes living in the subsurface.”

CoLD (Confidence of Life Detection) Scale

Spotting of this type on sedimentary terrestrial rocks can occur when chemical reactions involving hematite turn the rock from red to white. Those reactions can also release iron and phosphate, possibly causing the black halos to form. Reactions of this type can be an energy source for microbes, explaining the association between such features and microbes in a terrestrial setting.

In one scenario the Perseverance science team is considering, Cheyava Falls was initially deposited as mud with organic compounds mixed in that eventually cemented into rock. Later, a second episode of fluid flow penetrated fissures in the rock, enabling mineral deposits that created the large white calcium sulfate veins seen today and resulting in the spots.

Another Puzzle Piece

While both the organic matter and the leopard spots are of great interest, they aren’t the only aspects of the Cheyava Falls rock confounding the science team. They were surprised to find that these veins are filled with millimeter-sized crystals of olivine, a mineral that forms from magma. The olivine might be related to rocks that were formed farther up the rim of the river valley and that may have been produced by crystallization of magma.

If so, the team has another question to answer: Could the olivine and sulfate have been introduced to the rock at uninhabitably high temperatures, creating an abiotic chemical reaction that resulted in the leopard spots?

NASA Perseverance Rover Bright Angel Panorama

“We have zapped that rock with lasers and X-rays and imaged it literally day and night from just about every angle imaginable,” said Farley. “Scientifically, Perseverance has nothing more to give. To fully understand what really happened in that Martian river valley at Jezero Crater billions of years ago, we’d want to bring the Cheyava Falls sample back to Earth, so it can be studied with the powerful instruments available in laboratories.”

Mission Overview

The NASA Perseverance rover, a cornerstone of the Mars 2020 mission, is tasked with a groundbreaking exploration focused primarily on astrobiology. Its primary mission is to search for signs of ancient microbial life, paving the way for future human missions by thoroughly characterizing Mars’s geology and climate. This sophisticated rover is the first of its kind designed not only to study Martian surface features but also to collect and cache samples of rock and regolith. These samples are intended to be retrieved and brought back to Earth under NASA’s Mars Sample Return Program, in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), for comprehensive analysis.

This ambitious mission is an integral part of NASA’s broader Moon to Mars exploration strategy, which also includes the Artemis missions to the Moon. These lunar missions serve as a preparatory step towards the ultimate goal of human exploration of Mars. The Perseverance rover itself is managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, operated by Caltech, ensuring top-tier oversight and execution of its operations on the Martian surface. This strategic approach aims not only to uncover the mysteries of Martian life and history but also to lay the groundwork for the next giant leap in human space exploration.

Whom then are the beneficiaries of global conspiracy? Often in a controlled-opposition environment, you’ll find amateur conspiracy theorists railing against a particular race, religion, or creed. You’ll see conspirator accusations thrown at ‘The British’, ‘The Jews’, non-human ETs, dimensional demons, or even ‘The Devil’ himself. It’s important to understand the Deep State is loyal to no race, religion, or creed, but rather only to their * family*. If you see any corporate shills like David Icke accusing an entire race or alien species of a conspiracy, just remember, they are just being racist.

Q: Where is the Deep State? Martial Law. Maritime. Marshalling. Marching. Mergers. Martyrdom. Murder. Marring. These familiar terms of conquest are named after the planet of conquest: Mars. The origins of these words suggest systems of control imposed upon us by humans who associate themselves with the planet Mars. The headquarters of the Deep State is located in the secret places of the Earth, as well as places we were told Humans cannot live, like on the inside of the planet Mars.

Q: Why would the Deep State be on Mars? Ancient testimony tells us the ‘true’ origin story of Earth, Mars, Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, and the Sun! (oh and the other planets were sorta involved too). The real history of our solar system is recent, not millions or billions of years long. Earth shares an incubated safe space with Mercury, Venus, and Mars that allows for periodic quantum entanglement without interference. Occasionally, Birkeland currents will flow between these planets. The coma tail of Venus prevents quantum entanglement and safe travel, as does the asteroid belt. Mercury may be a viable quantum-tunnel travel location. The most natural and safest periodic quantum gates exist between Earth and Mars. These gates were formed during inter-planetary discharges of electricity, the same kind of lightning scarring that carved the Grand Canyon.

Ok so, the Deep State does indeed exist, however, as far as the interplanetary occupation there of, well that’s simply bullsh*t. As for the deep state and who they are- The deep state consists of several families that want a one world currency and government to create a stable and easily controlled world population. They use the media as there propaganda mouth piece, they control what we see and the stories of the day to manipulate and brain wash the masses. They divide us by Race, Gender, Age, and sexual preference. The desperately are doing everything they can to ensure that Donald Trump will not win the presidency at all costs, they have even tried to take him out. As for my evidence- all it takes is an open mind and the ability to critically think. The evidence is everywhere and I mean Everywhere. For example, can you honestly explain to me just how a 19 year old kid with no social or combat skills got past the secret service with an m-16 rifle to shoot at the president? Or look at the double standards when it comes to politics, the candidate the deep state wants, the media mouth piece complies and work in tandem with each other to spew out it’s propaganda against the candidate who they oppose. This is not conspiracy theory, these are simple facts, many of you have been so brain washed to hate Trump for absolutely no reason other than lies they make created to discredit and ruin him. Any, like I said, there are several families involved, the company they have formed is called, “black rock” and they own 80 percent of the s&p500, they own all of our politicians except for a minor minority. They are globalists and elitists, one such player is George Soros, who is a Greek citizen, and donates millions and millions of dollars to create chaos and dissention among our people, George Soros donates millions to local prosecutors, and politicians. This can be verified by doing a simple Google search . There is much more I could tell you but I don’t have enough time and the ones who need to hear this are probably to far gone to ever consider my argument, thanks to the efficiency of the deep state and it’s propaganda via fake news outlets.

Jezero crater on planet Mars, Martian landscape with dry river bed

Buried inside a slab of ancient mudstone in what was once an inlet leading into a lake bounded by Mars’ Jezero Crater, NASA’s Perseverance rover’s sample number 25 is potentially a Martian astrobiological game-changer.

The rock core was drilled just this past month and offers telltale signs that microbial life may have once had a foothold here.

"Leopard spot" inclusions in the rocks are similar to features that on earth are often associated with fossilized microbial life, the University of California at Berkeley noted last week.

But such leopard spots can also be made abiotically.

That's the challenge, so you need to know the context of the collection point, Perseverance science team member Sandra Siljestrom, an astrobiologist and geochemist at the Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE), told me in her Stockholm office. I’m a Perseverance sample shepherd, my job is just to make sure that the best sample is selected, she told me. There are rocks everywhere; you must choose, says Siljestrom. We don't know exactly where life might have been if there was life on Mars, so we sample for diversity, she says.

Siljestrom served as the ‘sample shepherd’ on Perseverance samples 22 through 25 which means she led the team’s discussions on where the rover should actually drill.

You first have to kind of establish that it's an environment that could have where life could have lived and could have preserved the data, says Siljestrom.

What Makes Sample 25 Special?

Sample 25 is really a sample of mud stone, and this is a material where you can preserve organics over a long time, Pascale Ehrenfreund, an astrobiologist at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., told me at a recent astrobiology conference in Copenhagen. It could have been that microbe communities changed the rock and made these special shapes and these leopard spots, she says.

But the elephant in the room remains how NASA can prevent another false positive news flap like the one following the initial findings from the Allan Hills Mars meteorite.

The Allan Hills meteorite was found sheerly by chance nearly twenty years ago in Antarctica’s Far Western Icefield region. And when taken back to the laboratory in warmer climes, sample ALH84001 was examined under an electron scanning microscope and initially thought to have embedded morphologies that resembled microfossils.

But after a globally viewed 1996 press conference announcing the findings, as the hours, days and weeks ticked by, it soon became clear that the Allan Hills meteorite never contained life. It contains some pretty wild-looking perfectly natural carbonate morphologies, but no microfossils.

Part of the problem with the ALH84001 study was simply very little was known about from where on Mars it originated. In contrast, NASA knows exactly where its Mars samples originated and such context is a powerful harbinger of what may be ancient Mars biology.

Ironically, at the young age of 16, Siljestrom was in large part inspired to pursue astrobiology and geochemistry after following the news of the Allan Hills meteorite. Even though it turned out to be a negative result, Siljestrom was hooked on the idea of looking for life on Mars and understanding the origins of life here on earth.

The electron scanning microscopes that are in use today are so much better than what they were in 1996, says Siljestrom. So, we now have a more critical eye and more knowledge about how different chemical compounds can be produced abiotically, she says.

A Morphological Reality Check

Another way that NASA can avoid false positives is to compare the Mars samples with the chemical makeup and morphologies of microfossils that have been found here on earth, says Siljestrom. That's a good reality check, she says.

But in situ analysis of Perseverance’s rock core samples remains limited.

Perseverance has an instrument that can detect organics, but it can't really look at the specifics of the organics, says Siljestrom.

That’s why these Mars samples deserve to be returned to earth as soon as possible. This past April, NASA selected several aerospace companies to assess and enhance the current sample return architecture. Lockheed Martin, SpaceX, and Northrop Grumman are among the aerospace companies selected to examine more affordable and faster methods of bringing samples from Mars’ surface back to Earth, says NASA. The European Space Agency (ESA) is also expected to be a part of the final sample return mission when it does launch.

If we could analyze the samples with high resolution instrumentation in the laboratory, we would know much more, says Ehrenfreund. But these samples will be preserved and waiting for us, even if it takes ten years to get there, she says.

NASA's Perseverance Mars rover captured this image of a rock nicknamed "Cheyava Falls" on July 18, ... [+] 2024. Scientists are particularly interested in the millimeter-size, irregularly shaped light patches on the central reddish band (from lower left to upper right of the image) that are surrounded by a thin ring of dark material, akin to leopard spots.

It's Sedimentary

Onward to the crater rim, more mission information, news media contacts.

This panorama shows the area NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover will climb in coming months

Editor’s note:   This story was updated Aug. 16, 2024, to correct the length of time that NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover has been exploring Jezero Crater.

After 3½ years exploring Jezero Crater’s floor and river delta, the rover will ascend to an area where it will search for more discoveries that could rewrite Mars’ history.

NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover will soon begin a monthslong ascent up the western rim of Jezero Crater that is likely to include some of the steepest and most challenging terrain the rover has encountered to date. Scheduled to start the week of Aug. 19, the climb will mark the kickoff of the mission’s new science campaign — its fifth since the rover landed in the crater on Feb. 18, 2021.

“Perseverance has completed four science campaigns, collected 22 rock cores , and traveled over 18 unpaved miles,” said Perseverance project manager Art Thompson of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. “As we start the Crater Rim Campaign, our rover is in excellent condition, and the team is raring to see what’s on the roof of this place.”

Two of the priority regions the science team wants to study at the top of the crater are nicknamed “Pico Turquino” and “Witch Hazel Hill.” Imagery from NASA’s Mars orbiters indicates that Pico Turquino contains ancient fractures that may have been caused by hydrothermal activity in the distant past.

Rover looking back at the “Bright Angel” area

Orbital views of Witch Hazel show layered materials that likely date from a time when Mars had a very different climate than today. Those views have revealed light-toned bedrock similar to what was found at “ Bright Angel ,” the area where Perseverance recently discovered and sampled the “ Cheyava Falls ” rock, which exhibits chemical signatures and structures that could possibly have been formed by life billions of years ago when the area contained running water.

During the river delta exploration phase of the mission, the rover collected the only sedimentary rock ever sampled from a planet other than Earth. Sedimentary rocks are important because they form when particles of various sizes are transported by water and deposited into a standing body of water; on Earth, liquid water is one of the most important requirements for life as we know it.

A study published Wednesday, Aug. 14, in AGU Advances chronicles the 10 rock cores gathered from sedimentary rocks in an ancient Martian delta , a fan-shaped collection of rocks and sediment that formed billions of years ago at the convergence of a river and a crater lake.

The core samples collected at the fan front are the oldest, whereas the rocks cored at the fan top are likely the youngest, produced when flowing water deposited sediment in the western fan.

“Among these rock cores are likely the oldest materials sampled from any known environment that was potentially habitable,” said Tanja Bosak, a geobiologist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge and member of Perseverance’s science team. “When we bring them back to Earth, they can tell us so much about when, why, and for how long Mars contained liquid water and whether some organic, prebiotic, and potentially even biological evolution may have taken place on that planet.”

This map shows the route NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover

As scientifically intriguing as the samples have been so far, the mission expects many more discoveries to come.

“Our samples are already an incredibly scientifically compelling collection, but the crater rim promises to provide even more samples that will have significant implications for our understanding of Martian geologic history,” said Eleni Ravanis, a University of Hawaiì at Mānoa scientist on Perseverance’s Mastcam-Z instrument team and one of the Crater Rim Campaign science leads. “This is because we expect to investigate rocks from the most ancient crust of Mars. These rocks formed from a wealth of different processes, and some represent potentially habitable ancient environments that have never been examined up close before.”

Reaching the top of the crater won’t be easy. To get there, Perseverance will rely on its auto-navigation capabilities as it follows a route that rover planners designed to minimize hazards while still giving the science team plenty to investigate. Encountering slopes of up to 23 degrees on the journey (rover drivers avoid terrain that would tilt Perseverance more than 30 degrees ), the rover will have gained about 1,000 feet (300 meters) in elevation by the time it summits the crater’s rim at a location the science team has dubbed “Aurora Park.”

Then, perched hundreds of meters above a crater floor stretching 28 miles (45 kilometers) across, Perseverance can begin the next leg of its adventure.

A key objective of Perseverance’s mission on Mars is astrobiology , including caching samples that may contain signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will characterize the planet’s geology and past climate, to help pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet and as the first mission to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith.

NASA’s Mars Sample Return Program, in cooperation with ESA (European Space Agency), is designed to send spacecraft to Mars to collect these sealed samples from the surface and return them to Earth for in-depth analysis.

The Mars 2020 Perseverance mission is part of NASA’s Moon to Mars exploration approach, which includes Artemis missions to the Moon that will help prepare for human exploration of the Red Planet.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which is managed for the agency by Caltech, built and manages operations of the Perseverance rover.
