There are many legends behind Diwali , but many people believe it is the celebration of Lakshmi the goddess of wealth . This holiday takes place over five days and includes exchanging gifts, large family feasts, lighting clay lanterns, and shopping in festival markets.

During Diwali, all of India is lit up with oil lanterns, candles, or string lights. Cities and houses are all decorated and fireworks and firecrackers go off throughout the night.

Holi and Diwali Dates

Holi and Diwali take place at opposite ends of the year. While Diwali takes place in autumn, Holi occurs in the spring. The timings of both festivals are determined by the Hindu lunar calendar meaning that the exact dates change from year to year .

Holi occurs the day after the last full moon of the Hindu month of Phalunga. This means that the holiday normally falls in March. In 2024, Holi will take place on March 25th . The bonfire of Holika Dahan will take place the night before.

Diwali takes place on the new moon day of the Hindu month of Kartik meaning that the festival usually falls in late October or November. Diwali 2024 will take place on November 1st.

Holi and Diwali Celebrations

Diwali celebrations last for five days. The first day is known as Dhanteras and is when people clean their homes in preparation for the coming of goddess Lakshmi. It is also common to go to the markets and buy auspicious items like gold and silver.

The second day of Diwali is Chhoti Diwali , or little Diwali, when everyone decorates their homes with candles and string lights. It's also common to make or buy Indian sweets on this day to give to friends and visitors.

The main day of Diwali is the third day. On this day, families get together and exchange gifts then eat a large meal. In the evening, a ritual is performed for Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and the famous diyas or clay lanterns are ceremoniously lit and burn throughout the night.

The fourth day is called Padwa and is dedicated to the love between spouses. Husbands and wives often exchange gifts on this day. The final day of celebrations is known as Bhai Duj and is dedicated to the bond between siblings. On this day, brothers and sisters get together to perform a special protection ritual and exchange gifts.

Holi and Diwali Legends

While stemming from the same mythology, the legends of Holi and Diwali focus on different stories of Hindu gods and goddesses.

The story of Holi focuses on the demoness Holika who was sent by the evil King Hiranyakashipu to kill his son Prahlada. Prahlada was a follower of Lord Vishnu and when Holika tried to kill Prahlada by burning him on a pyre, it was she who died instead.

Holi is also widely known as the celebration of Lord Krishna . Krishna is a famous Hindu god who was believed to be mischievous and silly. Legends say that he used to throw colors on the village girls for fun. Today, putting color on others is a symbol of joy and happiness because of the stories of Krishna.

Every region of India believes in a different legend of Diwali . For most Indians, Diwali includes worshipping the goddess Lakshmi who is thought to have been born on this day.

Many people from North India also celebrate it as the day that Lord Rama returned from his 14 years of exile as told in the Ramayana Hindu epic. To celebrate his return, people light clay lanterns to symbolically lead Rama home.

In South India, Diwali is celebrated as the day that Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura.

Holi and Diwali Decorations

Out of the two festivals, Diwali has a larger focus on decorations than Holi. While there are often colorful flowers hung in doorways during the celebration of the Festival of Colors, most of the decorating occurs naturally during the color fight by staining stones and streets brilliant shades of pink and red.

Our guide lele is a wealth of information, Lele is very professional and very attentive to our needs. Lele is amazing. Lele got everything spot on. It probably helps that Guilin is a brilliant place to visit so Lele has great material to work with but that doesn't take anything away from how much Lele helped make it a great trip.

Our guide for Beijing was super knowledgeable and experienced and able to help us to achieve as much as we wanted within the time given. We had a fun time guided by him as he is also super humorous and you can see how he interacts with the vendors and people whom he comes by. Thank you for a very enjoyable time in Beijing and accommodating to all our needs!

He narrated many interesting historical events about Chengdu while touring around the city and having afternoon tea with us. Holi: The Festival of Colors

Holi, often called the "festival of colors," is a vibrant and joyful Hindu celebration that marks spring’s arrival, the triumph of good over evil, and the legendary love between Radha and Krishna. 

This festival, mainly observed in South Asia but also recognized globally, typically spans two days and is rooted in ancient traditions, mythology and community gatherings. Its date changes, as it is based on the full moon in the month of Phalguna, part of the Hindu lunar calendar, usually falling in late February or March. In 2024, Holi falls on Monday, March 25.

Holi, dating back to the 4th century, stands alongside Diwali , the festival of lights, as one of the most prominent Hindu celebrations and is famous for the playful tossing of colored powders and water.

The Roots of Holi: Mythology and Legend

Holi's origins are deeply embedded in Hindu mythology, enriched with various stories and legends. One famous tale revolves around the legend of an arrogant and powerful demon king, Hiranyakashipu, and his son Prahlad, who defied his father's wishes by worshipping the deity Vishnu. In a bid to kill Prahlad, Hiranyakashipu conspired with his sister, Holika, to burn him alive. But through divine intervention, Prahlad was unharmed, while Holika perished in the flames. The legend symbolizes the victory of good over evil, a theme central to Holi celebrations.

Also connected to Holi festivities is the love story of Radha and Krishna . According to Hindu mythology, the deity Krishna, whose skin was turned blue by a demon, was enamored by Radha, the epitome of love and devotion.

“Worried that Radha would be turned off by his unnatural appearance, Krishna vented to his mother, who playfully suggested that he smear colored powder on Radha’s face,” CNN reports . “Upon doing so, Radha fell in love with Krishna.”

Holi Rituals and Traditions

In India, where Holi is a national holiday, festivities traditionally begin with Holika Dahan the night before the main event. People light bonfires to honor the triumph of righteousness and sing and dance around them. They might also throw wood, leaves, grains or chickpeas into the flames as a symbolic gesture of letting go of negativity and welcoming the new season with positivity. 

The following day, known as Rangwali Holi, streets burst with color as scores of revelers playfully toss gulal (colored powders) and water at each other, an homage to Radha and Krishna’s love. 

Colors play a significant role in Holi, representing various emotions and elements of nature. Red symbolizes love and fertility, yellow signifies prosperity and new beginnings, blue is associated with the divine Krishna and green embodies the rejuvenation of life and the onset of spring. The throwing of these colors isn’t just fun—it’s a way to celebrate the changing seasons and create a communal sense of unity.

Transitioning from Winter to Spring

Holi also marks the shift from winter to spring, and celebrations with family and friends include sweet treats and drinks. Gujiya, a sweet dumpling-like pastry filled with dried fruits, nuts and other ingredients, symbolizes abundance. The traditional Indian milk drink thandai, infused with sugar, spices, nuts and saffron, and lassi, a yogurt drink flavored with fruits, spices or herbs, are also popular. According to the Hindustan Times , thandai brings “feelings of relief from the scorching heat of summers.” 

The Hindu American Foundation notes that Holi is sometimes compared to Thanksgiving in the U.S., as spring is the time of harvest in the region. Decorations fill Hindu temples, and there’s a focus on harmony and fresh starts. “Holi encourages people to forgive and forget–to pay off old debts, renew broken relationships and make new friends."

The deity is represented via a statue which is considered a murti, or the living embodiment of the deity.

Kirtan is the practice of chanting of hymns or mantras, often with accompanied by instruments and dance (“The Beginners’ Guide to Kirtan and Mantra” par. 3). The texts of kirtana mantras typically cover religious themes or Indian mythology. The food and water which are offered to the deity during puja are called prasad (“Prasada” par. 1). It is believed that the deity tastes the food and returns the offering, which is then tasted by the pujari.

The ritual of puja is connected with the many Indian festivals including the festivals of Holi and Diwali. Holi is a two-day festival which starts on the full-moon day or purnima in early spring. Holi is the festival of colours which is celebrated not only in India but all across the world. Holi As a Celebration of the Victory of Good Over Evil

There is a mythological story associated with the celebration of Holi. It is said that a cruel king named Hiranyakashipu was blessed by Brahma that no human or animal could kill him on the ground at home or outside. But he was a torturous king and wanted everyone in his kingdom to worst him as a god, and so he ordered the execution of his only son Prahlad by his sister Holika by inciting fire because he was a faithful devotee of Lord Vishnu and Holika was blessed that she wouldn't be touched by fire.

It is said that it so happened that on the day of this heinous act, Holika sat on a pile of burning woods with Prahlad on her lap but instead of Prahlad getting burnt, he was saved by Lord Vishnu and Holika turned into ashes. Then Lord Vishnu turned himself into half-animal, half deity form and killed Hiranyakashipu by tearing his stomach apart. Hence, the celebration of Holi has been a mark of triumph of Good over Evil.

Diwali Pollution: A Matter of Concern

Diwali is an auspicious day. The entire atmosphere is filled with the air of festivity and joy around this time. However, it eventually fills with pollution. The fire crackers burnt on this day are a complete put off. Burning crackers is said to be a ritual on Diwali. People burn thousands of crackers in the name of ritual on this day each year. This results in the increase in pollution levels in the atmosphere. The sky turns hazy and the consequences are harmful. It gives way to many health problems. This is especially unsafe for asthmatic patients, heart patients, pregnant women, elderly people and infants. It is difficult to step out on Diwali as well as days after the festival.

The burning of crackers does not only pollute the air but also causes noise pollution. It is particularly disturbing for sick and elderly people, small kids, students and animals.

Eco-Friendly Diwali: A Good Idea

It is high time we must behave as responsible citizens and stop burning crackers to celebrate Diwali or any other occasion for that matter. We must celebrate eco-friendly Diwali.

We must say no to crackers and advise those around us to do the same. Parents must take this as their responsibility to tell their kids about the negative repercussions of burning crackers. Kids must also be sensitized about the same in the schools. This will help in bringing down the fire works on Diwali.

Apart from the measures that people can take at their end, it is important to put a check on the sale of fire crackers. The government must intervene for the same. The production and sale of fire crackers must be banned or at least some restriction should be put on the same.

Diwali is a sacred festival. We must maintain its sanctity by celebrating it the right way. We should refrain from burning crackers owing to the harmful effects it has on the environment that ultimately impacts life on Earth.

Diwali is the most significant Hindu festival celebrated all over the India in the autumn season every year. The spiritual significance of this festival indicates the victory of light over darkness. It is a five days long festival celebrated by the people with huge preparations and rituals. It falls every year in the month of October or November. Many days ago of the festival, people start cleaning, renovating and decorating their homes and offices. They purchase new dresses, decorative things like diyas, lamps, candles, puja materials, statue of God and Goddess and eating things especially for Diwali.

People do worship of God Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi for getting wealth and prosperity in their life. They perform puja on main Diwali with lots of rituals. After puja, they get involved in the fireworks activities and then distribute gifts to each other among neighbors, family members, friends, offices, etc. People celebrate Dhanteras on first day, Naraka Chaturdasi on second day, Diwali on third day, Diwali Padva  (Govardhan Puja) on fourth day, and Bhai Dooj on fifth day of the festival. It becomes official holiday in many countries on the day of festival.

Celebration of Diwali with Family without Crackers

Diwali is my favorite festival of the year and I celebrate it with lots of enthusiasm with my family members and friends. Diwali is called as the festival of lights because we celebrate it by lighting lots of diyas and candles. It is a traditional and cultural festival celebrated by each and every Hindu person all over India and abroad. People decorate their houses with lots of candles and small clay oil lamps indicating the victory of good over evil.

Family members spend their most of the day time in preparing house (cleaning, decorating, etc) to welcome the festival with grand evening party. Neighbors, family members, and friends gets collected in the evening party and enjoy the party with lots of delicious Indian dishes, dance, music, etc all through the night. Houses look very attractive in white wash, candle lights and rangolis. High pitch music and fireworks makes the celebration more interesting.

People go to their home by taking off from their job, offices and other works; students also book their train around three months ago to easily go to their home on Diwali festival because everyone wants to celebrate this festival with their family members in the home town. People generally enjoy the festival by feasting, bursting crackers and enjoying the dance with family and friends.

However, it is prohibited by the doctors to got outside and enjoy firecrackers especially people suffering from lung or heart diseases, hypertension, diabetes, etc. Such people have to knock the doctor’s door because of consuming highly saturated food and sweets in high amount and lack of exercises and pollution caused by crackers in these days.

Significance of Diwali

Diwali festival is celebrated by the people with great revelry and lots of fun and frolic activities. It becomes the happiest holiday for Indian people in the year and celebrated with significant preparations. It is the festival of high significance for Indian people during which people clean their homes, decorate, do shopping, buy new things including gifts, kitchen utensils, appliances, cars, golden jewelry, etc and perform so many rituals.

There are many ancient stories, legends, and myths about celebrating this festival. Girls and women of the home do shopping and make rangolis in creative patterns on the floors near to the doors and walkways of home. There are little variations in the celebration of this festival according to the regional practices and rituals.

The spiritual significance of this festival symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and victory of good over evil. It is celebrated to honor the Goddess of wealth, Lakshmi and God of wisdom, Ganesha. Its religious significance varies according to the region all through the country. Somewhere, it is celebrated to honor the returning of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana to their home after long exile period of 14 years (according to Hindu epic Ramayana).

Some people celebrate it to remember the return of Pandavas to their kingdom after 12 years of Vanvas and one year of agyatavas (according to Hindu epic Mahabharata). It is also believed that it was started celebrating when Goddess Lakshmi was born after churning the ocean by the gods and demons. Diwali celebration also indicates the start of a new Hindu year in the west and some northern parts of India. It is celebrated by the people of Sikh religion to mark the Bandi Chhor Divas by lighting up the Golden Temple. It is celebrated by the people of Jain religion to mark the Nirvana attained by the Mahavira.

Pollution on Diwali

Together with the Diwali celebration, there is indirect increase in the environmental pollution all over the world because of the bursting of various types of firecrackers during this festival. Such firecrackers are very dangerous as they release toxic pollutants like sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and so many etc which gets intermingled into the air and causes variety of ailments like asthma, bronchitis, hypertension, etc. It affects the people of all age group however those people who already suffer any type of ailment. Together with the human beings, it also affects the lives of animals, birds and other living beings due to air and noise pollution.

Now-a-days, there is a campaign run by the government to celebrate pollution free Diwali all over the country. Schools and various organizations also organizes various demonstrations prior to the celebration to educate and aware students for pollution-free festival. Environment and pollution departments also do many efforts by publishing pollution free news in the various newspapers to aware people and curb noise and air pollution because of firecrackers. Bursting sound-emitting firecrackers has been banned by the Supreme Court especially during 10 pm to 6 am.

Air and water pollution is also caused by the decay of remnants of fireworks and deluge of garbage like empty bottles, papers used to light off rockets, gift wrappers, dried flowers, etc at the nook and corners of the city. We all should practice celebrating the pollution free Diwali every year in order to save and enjoy the natural beauty of environment forever.

The eligibility age criteria for class 10th CBSE is 14 years of age. Since your son will be 15 years of age in 2024, he will be eligible to give the exam.

According to CBSE norms, a student must be 14 years old by the end of the year in which the exam will be held in order to sit for the 10th board exam. If your age is greater than 14, however, there are no limits. Therefore, based on your DOB, you will be 12 years and 6 months old by the end of December 2022. After the actual 16 June 2024, you'll be qualified to take your 10th board.

The first day of the festival is called ‘Dhanteras’. On this day, people worship Goddess Lakshmi as well as Kubera, the god of wealth and Dhanvantri, the God of medicine and Ayurveda. It is customary to buy gold and silver items as well as utensils on Dhanteras.

Legends also say that on the day of Diwali, Lord Rama and Sita returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. To celebrate their return, the people of Ayodhya lit thousands of oil lamps. Thus, many people also worship Rama and Sita along with Lakshman and Hanuman, on this day. 

The fourth day of the festival is celebrated as Govardhan puja and is associated with Lord Krishna. On this day, cows are worshipped and fed. The festival concludes with Bhai Dooj, a day to celebrate the beautiful bond between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters invite brothers to their houses and prepare a lot of delicious dishes for them. They apply tika on their brother’s forehead and pray for their long life. In turn, the brothers give them gifts and promise to protect them for life.

पकवान बनाने के बाद घर के सभी लोग उसे एक थाली में सजाकर होलिका दहन वाली जगह जाते हैं। इसके अलावा वे अपने साथ बड़कुल्ले और पूजा का अन्य सामान भी लेकर जाते हैं जिसमें कच्चा कुकड़ा (सूती धागा), लौटे में जल, चंदन इत्यादि सम्मिलित हैं। फिर उस जगह पहुंचकर होली की पूजा की जाती हैं, पकवान का भोग लगाया जाता हैं और बड़कुल्लों को उस ढेर में रख दिया जाता हैं। उसके बाद सभी लोग कच्चे कुकड़े को उस गोल घेरे के चारों और बांधते हैं और भगवान से प्रह्लाद की रक्षा की प्रार्थना करते हैं। पूजा करने के पश्चात सभी अपने घर आ जाते हैं। 

रात में सूर्यास्त होने के बाद पंडित जी वहां की पूजा करते हैं। सभी लोग उस स्थल पर एकत्रित हो जाते हैं। उसके बाद उन लकड़ियों में अग्नि लगा दी जाती हैं। अग्नि लगाते ही, उस ढेर के बीच में रखे मोटे बांस (प्रह्लाद) को बाहर निकाल लिया जाता हैं। होलिका दहन को देखने के लिए लोग अपने घर से पानी का लौटा, कच्चा कुकड़ा, हल्दी की गांठ व कनक के बाल लेकर जाते हैं। पानी से होली को अर्घ्य दिया जाता है। दूर से उस अग्नि को कच्चा कुकड़ा, हल्दी की गांठ और कनक के बाल दिखाए जाते हैं। कुछ लोग होलिका दहन के पश्चात उसकी राख को घर पर ले जाते हैं।

इन सब के बाद शुरू होता हैं असली रंगों का त्यौहार। सभी लोग अपने मित्रों, रिश्तेदारों, जान-पहचान वालों के साथ होली का त्यौहार खेलते हैं। पहले के समय में केवल प्राकृतिक रंगों से ही होली खेलने का विधान था लेकिन आजकल कई प्रकार के रंगों से होली खेली जाती हैं।

इसी के साथ लोग फूलों, पानी, गुब्बारों से भी होली खेलते हैं। कई जगह लट्ठमार होली खेली जाती हैं तो कहीं पुष्प वर्षा की जाती हैं। कई जगह कपड़ा-फाड़ होली खेलते हैं तो कई लड्डुओं की होली भी खेलते है। यह राज्य व लोगों के अनुसार भिन्न-भिन्न प्रकार की होती हैं। बस रंग हर जगह उड़ाए जाते हैं।

होली  का इन्तजार लोगो को पुरे साल भर रहता है। लेकिन कई बार होली पर बहुत सी दुर्घटनाएं भी हो जाती है जिसका ध्यान रखना चाहिए। लोगों द्वारा होली के दिन गुलाल का प्रयोग न कर के केमिकल और कांच मिले रंगों का प्रयोग किया जाता है। जिससे चेहरा खराब हो जाता है कई लोग मादक पदार्थों का सेवन व भाग मिला कर नशा करते हैं जिससे कई लोग दुर्घटना का शिकार भी हो जाते हैं। ऐसे ही होली के दिन बच्चे गुब्बारों में पानी भर कर गाड़ियों के ऊपर फेंकते हैं या पिचकारी और रंगो को आँखों में फेंक के मरते हैं होली में ऐसे रंगों व हरकतों को न करें जिससे किसी व्यक्ति के जीवन पर बुरा प्रभाव पड़ें इसलिए होली के दिन सावधानीपूर्वक रंगो को खेलिये जिससे किसी के लिए हानिकारक न हो।

सुरक्षित तरीके से होली खेलने के सुझाव 

होली का त्योहार (Holi Festival) ऐसा त्योहार है, जिसमें सभी लोग इसके रंग में डूबे नजर आते हैं, लेकिन इसकी मौज-मस्ती आपको इन बातों का भी विशेष ख्याल रखना चाहिए ताकि इस प्यार भरे उत्सव का मजा किरकिरा न हो।

• होली खेलने से पहले अपने पूरे शरीर और बालों पर अच्छी तरह तेल और मॉइश्चराइजर लगा लें। ताकि रंग आसानी से छूट जाएं।
• होली खेलने के लिए नैचुरल और ऑर्गेनिक रंगों का इस्तेमाल करें, कैमिकल भरे रंगों के इस्तेमाल से बचें। क्योंकि कैमिकल वाले रंगों की वजह से कई बार स्किन एलर्जी तक हो जाती है।
• होली में ज्यादा पानी को बर्बाद न करें।
• होली पर फुल कपड़े पहनने की कोशिश करें, ताकि कलर ज्यादा स्किन पर न आए।
• होली में किसी पर जबरदस्ती कलर नहीं डालें और ध्यान रखें कि मौज-मस्ती में किसी को चोट न आए।
• होली की मौज-मस्ती में बच्चों का विशेष ख्याल रखें, कई बार ज्यादा समय तक पानी में गीले रहने से बच्चे बीमार भी पड़ जाते हैं

होली रंग का त्योहार है, जिसे मस्ती और आनंद के साथ मनाया जाता है। होली में पानी और रंग में भीगने के लिए तैयार रहें, लेकिन खुद को और दूसरों को नुकसान न पहुंचाने के लिए भी सावधान रहें। अपने दिमाग को खोलें, अपने अवरोधों को बहाएं, नए दोस्त बनाएं, दुखी लोगों को शांत करें और टूटे हुए रिश्तों को जोड़ें। चंचल बनें लेकिन दूसरों के प्रति भी संवेदनशील रहें। किसी को भी अनावश्यक रूप से परेशान न करें और हमेशा अपने आचरण की देखरेख करें। इस होली में केवल प्राकृतिक रंगों से खेलने का संकल्प लें।
