The magic of Magnus: At the Chess Olympiad, everything and everyone stops for the king

  • Shyam Vasudevan in Chennai

Eyes are swivelled and necks craned, gasps fill the air, people squeeze past one another in the smallest of gaps to sneak a glance and children are hoisted by their parents for a better view. It's not just the spectators, even players from other nations - from Barbados, Estonia, Venezuela, Netherlands, India, and Portugal and possibly many others - vie for a better view.

Amid the 50 match-ups, 200 games and 400 players (and several dozen GMs) in Hall 1 of the Chess Olympiad in Mahabalipuram, the attention is focused on a Norwegian in a black shirt, blue jeans, brown shoes and a gelled-up quiff. Magnus Carlsen in the house, nothing else really matters.

There are sporting superstars and then there is Magnus Carlsen. The world's undisputed chess champion (several times over); multimillionaire entrepreneur who's pioneering online chess; fantasy football expert; padel-tennis enthusiast too. The greatest chess player of this generation, the one who can draw crowds, turn heads, write the headlines.

"Where is he? Is he scared? Is he still studying in his room?" Allejandro Hoffman guffaws as his Uruguay team-mate Bernardo Roselli Mailhe chuckles while smacking him on the arm. They are up against Norway today and use humour to deflect the tension.

"This is such a big game for us, everyone at home is watching," says Hoffman, grinning from ear to ear.

The banter continues as Georg Meier strolls in. Meier, bespectacled and soft-spoken, is the one to face Carlsen. Here at the Chess Olympiad, Saturday's game would have been almost routine for Meier. But playing Carlsen is a whole different thing. He too hides behind humour: "They're lucky that Norway are playing Uruguay in chess and not in football."

He's played Carlsen earlier, but never won. "I know his game pretty well. But the tricky aspect of playing such big players is that they always surprise you, no matter how much you prepare."

The clock inches close to 3 PM, the official start time, and there's no sign of Carlsen. Or anyone from the Norway team for that matter. People flock to the far end of the hall, awaiting Carlsen.

Francisco Mwangupili, the Malawi women's team coach, has slipped out of Hall 2 [where his team is to play shortly] to catch a glimpse of Carlsen. "How could I not be here? He's one of my favourites," he says.

Then a sudden clamour as Carlsen strides in. He walks up to Meier, shakes his hand, and settles in. He's mobbed by some three dozen cameras - all going off at an absurd speed of 100 clicks a second - has people forcefully taking selfies with him, folks sticking to within one inch of him just to be in the same frame and breathe the same air [no one wears masks anymore] as him.

Amid the frenzy Carlsen is unperturbed, an oasis of calm.

His teammates are late so for a while Carlsen is the only Norway player in the hall and is sitting across four Uruguay players. It's a surreal sight, almost as though he's going to take them all on. Does he feel any pressure? Maybe he's thinking about his opening week Fantasy Premier League team.

He then fiddles with his board, moves his queen by an inch, and goes for a quick shuteye. He takes a 100-second power nap and eases into a huge stretch. The shutterbugs are at it again. He smirks. Everything he does is a frame to be captured. He puts on a show. It's almost like he's here for fun.

The rest of the Norwegian players finally turn up a minute before 3 PM and Carlsen says something to the tune of "where have you guys been?" A few embarrassed smiles are exchanged and just as the game's about to begin, Carlsen is approached by a Kenyan player [who is a fan at this point]. He seems to want a picture or an autograph and Carlsen replies with a curt, "Sorry, not right now."

The game finally begins. "Vamonos Georg [come on Georg]!" comes a whisper from the other end of the table. Carlsen begins with a white pawn to E4.

Eleven minutes in, Carlsen gets up for a short walk. USA's Wesley So, ranked 6th in the world, is playing on the table behind Carlsen and the India B team, for which one-time Carlsen-beater Praggnanandhaa plays, is two tables to his right. Carlsen strolls around, has a glance all around, and is back.

As he returns to the board, all the three Norwegian players, almost in perfect sync, crane their necks to see Carlsen's next move. The four Uruguayans also look at Carlsen's board from the corner of their eyes. Seven pairs of eyes, all focussed on one man's move. There's only one king on that table, everyone knows who that is.

He makes a move on the board, looks around, walks around, and comes back to doing what he does best - move a chess piece.

With the endgame approaching, he disappears for three minutes and comes back with a Snickers bar. He stuffs half the bar into his mouth and washes it down with a gulp of water. He's in his zone - it's almost like the three dozen cameras snapping away at him and the hundreds of people within two feet of him don't even exist for him.

Outside the Carlsen bubble, his fellow Norwegians try and take things in their stride. It is something that Norway captain Jon Kristian Haarr often "worries" about. "We did not play with Magnus yesterday, but we will play today and I'm a bit 'worried' about us arriving at the playing venue but we'll see how that turns out," he'd told ESPN earlier in the day. "Sometimes you have to play the bodyguard, you know? Scooch past people like...team captain coming through! But yeah, how do you deal with it? Mostly he can deal with it himself, but this [the crowd] is on another level than what we're used to back in Norway. He's definitely popular in Norway as well and people want to come up and take a picture but yes...there are a couple more people here in India than in Norway so the swarms [of people], we're not so used to."

While it may seem like any other day for Carlsen, seeing him play is a "dream'' for Raghav Sabharwal. A student in Grade 7, Raghav has travelled all the way from Bathinda in Punjab to attend the Olympiad. "It was so amazing!" he says animatedly as he clutches onto his autograph book.

Accompanied by his parents Mohit and Shalu, Raghav has taken a 10-day break from school to be here. He's got a healthy collection of autographs from a variety of GMs, but he's waiting to get the one that matters the most.

He was luckier than Mohan Kumar, an elderly citizen who'd travelled from Bengaluru. This writer met Mohan at the venue on Friday, when Carlsen wasn't in action. It took Mohan a while to accept that Carlsen wasn't playing before he lamented: "But I've come all the way! I really wanted to see him play."

And then it is 8:15 pm, the match is done and some 200 enthusiasts storm the entrance of Hall 1 in the hope of a selfie with or autograph from Carlsen. But Carlsen being Carlsen has check-mated them - he leaves from the other entrance.

Three hours before Norway's match against Uruguay, at the height of the noonday sun, this reporter and another are speaking to Jon Kristian Haarr at lobby of the Norway team hotel. Haarr is talking about his team's pre-match routine when in walks Carlsen with a football in hand. Barefoot.

"He's a big sports idiot," says Harr. "He probably knows all the football players in so many of the leagues. He has an exceptional memory, he knows every player in Spain, England, and Germany. He's also watching some very strange stuff like beach football in Brazil for example," he adds.

Carlsen is back in the lobby. He jogs up the stairs and is on his way out in less than a minute, this time with a pair of hotel slippers on.

Haarr explains Carlsen's recent - and controversial - decision to not defend his World Championship title. "I think it's largely been positive feedback, but some people are sad. I think most people understand, to be honest. He knows what to do to bring out the best in him. It helps him focus on his other goals such as breaching the 2900 ELO rating mark. It's a bit of weight lifted off his shoulders."

Carlsen is playing in his first Olympiad in six years, but there's not a shred of stress. He's out on the lawns of this beach-side hotel, playing a good old game of football. He appears to be a naturally left-footed player. He has a mean back-heel. He puts on quite the show. Carlsen's got the moves, on and off the 64 squares.

essay on chess olympiad 2022

  • It comprises media rights, apparel, sports nutrition, sports equipment etc as an industry is likely to go up five times to reach a value of $100 billion by 2027 from $27 billion in 2020 .
  • The Indian sports media market size was $1 billion in 2020 and is estimated to grow over $13.4 bn by 2027.

The Importance of Sports

essay on chess olympiad 2022

  • Sports, education, and health share an elemental link, and together they contribute significantly to the holistic development of a child.
  • A good sports culture is an index to measure a nation’s growth and progress.
  • The medals and trophies earned by players at globally recognized sporting events bring glory and honour to the country.
  • There is a broad spectrum of professional opportunities that sports as an industry offer.
  • In addition to a sportsperson, one can become a trainer, sports coach, athletic director, marketing and promotion coordinator, PR, physical therapist, sports and fitness nutritionist, sports journalist, sports announcer, sports agent, umpire, referee, sports photographer, a sports lawyer, etc.
  • The Indian Government recognized the importance of sports and formed the National Sports Policy in 1984, aiming to make sports and physical education an essential part of the academic curriculum.
  • The revised National Sports Policy, 2011, advocates the importance of sports and physical education in developing better individuals, enhancing productivity, and bringing social harmony.
  • A child needs to engage in sports as it offers holistic development and positive personality traits.
  • A school is a place that helps children discover their interests, inclination, and strengths.
  • Some of the research also suggests that being involved in sports may raise the employability level of young people by developing specific ‘core’ and ‘soft’ skills.
  • The government has made sports and physical education mandatory in the curriculum but it lacks the required motivation and drive from the administrators.
  • A sport is never a priority for a majority of Indian parents and their kids.
  • Most Indians share the belief that “If you study hard you will be successful but if you play sports you will ruin your life.”
  • Poverty is widespread in India and because of this menace; such a massive population cannot produce good sportspersons.
  • It is very difficult for many Indian families to provide the means to their children to pursue a career in sports.
  • Consequently, a lot of latent talent goes undiscovered or inadequately nurtured to compete at the level of the Olympics.
  • Lack of facilities at the grass root level is a major problem.
  • Schools and colleges lack the basic infrastructure that can encourage other sports, so even if someone has a natural talent in a particular sport, it gets crushed at the school level itself.
  • Cricket continues to dominate India’s sporting landscape.
  • Sports other than cricket are not given much weightage as a career option, because neither they appear neither financially lucrative nor glamorous.
  • Corruption plagues all major Indian sports, including cricket, hockey, weightlifting, and athletics.
  • The governing boards of the sports federations are under the control of politicians and bureaucrats who have little or no interest and knowledge of the specific requirements and anticipated problems in that sport.

Government initiatives in the sports sector

  • Fit India Movement is a nationwide movement in India to encourage people to remain healthy and fit by including physical activities and sports in their daily lives.
  • The Khelo India Scheme has initiated in 2016 post the fusion of three earlier schemes – Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan (RGKA), Urban Sports Infrastructure Scheme (USIS), and National Sports Talent Search Scheme (NSTSS).
  • This scheme was focused on increasing mass participation of youth in annual sports games and competitions.
  • The portal allows youngsters to upload their achievements.
  • Those who get shortlisted are then called for trials and the qualified candidates then take part in the schemes of the Sports Authority of India (SAI).
  • The Committee is answerable for preparing a far-reaching action plan for the powerful participation of Indian players in the Olympic Games of 2021 (Tokyo), 2024 (Paris), and 2028 (Los Angeles).
  • The Government acknowledges and respects sports personalities with the Arjuna Awards, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Dhyan Chand Awards, and Dronacharya Awards for their achievements and commitments as sportspersons and coaches in the field of sports.
  • The differently-abled sportspersons are trained in their field for conducting sports competitions and assisting schools and institutes having differently-abled sportspersons.
  • It is under the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) to help the potential medal possibilities for the Olympic Games of 2016 and 2020.
  • The main centre is given to Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Archery, Wrestling, and Shooting sports.

Way forward/ Suggestions

  • It ought to be mandatory for every single person in the country to run or jog or walk for fifteen minutes at least every single morning.
  • The best way to develop sports at the grassroots level is to integrate it as a goal for schools to pursue.
  • A lot of kids pick up sports because of what they watch on TV.
  • Increased coverage of sports on TV also makes way for companies to invest in advertisement slots, which promotes the market for the sport.
  • Private sector is all about monetizing things. They can take sports to the next level because their focus is long-term, not just what they can make today.
  • Increase the number of facilities which people can use for pursuing sports and increase the accessibility and quality of the existing infrastructure.
  • The NBA has tied up with Mahindra, IMG Reliance and the Basketball Federation of India to develop basketball in India.
  • They provide technical expertise and other support to conduct various activities at the grassroots level and above to improve the standard of the game here and to spread the love of the game.
  • People need to compete in well-organised competitions which have a sustainable structure.
  • A simple one-shot tournament is not completely ineffective, but having well-organised competitions over a long period of time will allow for better development and talent spotting.

Gukesh on threshold of Candidates history; Vishy Anand says ‘anything 17-year-old does is historic’

Viswanathan anand tells the indian express that 17-year-old gukesh has appeared level-headed and 'gives the impression of being in control' at the high-stakes candidates..

essay on chess olympiad 2022

As he emerged from the playing hall in Toronto on Sunday morning after defeating Alireza Firouzja — a victory that propped him to first place of the standings with just one game left — D Gukesh was asked about his trademark unfazed demeanor that he has maintained all through tense rounds of the Candidates chess tournament. At 17 he was now just a win away from being the youngest player ever to win the event conducted to decide the challenger the the reigning World Champion but there were no signs of nerves.

“I’ve been eager and excited in the same way from the start. My mental state has been the same,” Gukesh said at the press conference after the Round 13 triumph that made him the odds-on favourite to be the designated No.1 Candidate to take on defending champion Ding Liren of China next year.

In another top of the table duel, Gukesh’s closest rivals — Ian Nepomniachtchi and Hikaru Nakamura — settled for a quick draw. These results set up an exciting final round on Monday. Gukesh at 8.5 points is now closely followed by the three joint-second candidates – the two Americans Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana along with Russia’s Nepomniachtchi.

Despite his opponents breathing down his neck, Gukesh played the waiting game. He didn’t allow pressure to make him anxious. It was the French GM Firouzja who blinked first. The moment came when the two rival queens were face-to-face. Gukesh didn’t shy away from skirmish and accepted the queen exchange. This put him in a winning position. It would take him 17 more moves to seal the game.

Festive offer

Far from being overawed by the occasion, Gukesh has held his own against his experienced rivals when the battle stretched. “Perhaps, it could be my age,” smiled Gukesh as he tried to rationalise an explanation for why he has been playing so well in longer games in Toronto.

Gukesh’s mentor Viswanathan Anand offered a more lucid response. “I would describe Gukesh at the Candidates as steady and focussed. Focussed because he appreciates the occasion and the chance he’s got. And steady because he plays one game at a time and gives the impression of keeping his concentration on the game ahead of him. He’s happy and excited at the chance he’s got. But generally, he’s quite level-headed about his tournament situation. I would say he gives the impression of (being in) control,” Anand told The Indian Express on Sunday.

Candidates chess 2024: Heading into the final round, Gukesh leads the 8-player standings with 8.5 points. (

This is not the first time Anand has been left impressed by Gukesh’s maturity. Back in 2022, Gukesh had been one of the standout performers of the Chess Olympiad in Chennai . But with the gold medal in sight for India, he had lost to Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Abdusattorov from a winning position which cost the team the top spot.

Back then, Anand had tried to cheer Gukesh up realising that this was the sort of defeat that would impact a rising star. “I was sure he would feel depressed. I’ve had games like these where there’s a lot riding on the outcome and I have blown it. I know what it does to you. So I thought let me go to him and try and cheer him up,” Anand had told The Indian Express last year.

But, the five-time world champion soon realised that the teenager was in good spirits and the two ended up playing table tennis. Anand’s concerns were unfounded, he didn’t need to console the teenager.

Exactly 10 days ago, Gukesh had experienced another such ego bruising defeat. He had been in sight of victory against Firouzja in Round 7, when suddenly he found himself sinking in the quick sand of time trouble. In the matter of a few dizzying minutes, what looked like a sure-fire win, turned into demoralising defeat.

It was one of those moments where insult came hand in hand with injury. The setback had denied Gukesh the chance to be the sole leader at the halfway point. Right after his defeat was confirmed, Gukesh looked shattered. He sat at the table, face buried in his palms trying to process how he had lost. But he soon gathered himself and made himself available for a match post-mortem that players are mandated to do for the world. Like he has for the rest of the tournament, Gukesh looked measured as he analysed what had gone wrong even as his opponent giggled while recounting how bad a game he had played, and survived with a victory.

For a teenager playing at the biggest stage of his career, this could have been a demoralising defeat but Gukesh has gone undefeated since that result. “You could see the disappointment in Gukesh’s reaction and on his face (after losing to Alireza in Round 7). But the game wasn’t that overwhelming. Gukesh took it in stride and got on with the next game,” Anand told The Indian Express.

Now for one more time, Gukesh needs to play the next game just right. If he wins tomorrow, Gukesh will make history. “Almost anything a 17-year-old does at the Candidates is pretty historic,” said Anand before adding: “More on that after the round tonight.”
