Model Answers and follow up questions to describe a live sports match that you have watched IELTS cue card :

Introduction: Well, sports play a crucial role in everyone’s life as we all play one or the other game. It can be indoor or outdoor. Apart from playing, watching sports is also extreme entertainment, especially when it is live.

What it was? and When you watched it? But here I would like to talk about a football match which was organised last year by our local council to encourage more youngsters to play. Actually, I was a part of the team yet I was not able to play that match due to an injury.

And how you felt about it? Moreover, It was amazing to see both the team members hugging each other to show the sportiness and celebrated the victory very positively. At last, prize distribution was the best part, as the players who performed well were awarded with trophies and incredible gift hampers. Man of the match won a bullet bike after which he was at cloud nine.

IELTS Speaking Part 3 : Follow up Questions

2. Why do some people like to watch live sports? I think watching sports live is much more about spending quality time with friends and family. People go there to break the monotony of everyday life and do something different. For some, it is also about the possibility of meeting or getting an autograph from their favourite sportsperson.

Describe a Live Sports Match that you watched.

You should say

  • When you watched it
  • And explain why you liked watching it

Well, football is the only sport that I usually watch with my brother. I’m terrible at playing football but I love watching a football match . Both home and away games cause high levels of emotion in me. Today, however, I would like to talk about a match where I did not care about the score.

There was an occasion a few years ago when I went to watch a football match in a town about half an hour from where I live by bike. It was a  charity match  to  collect funds  for the local school – and it was very  well attended . I think there must have been over 5,000 people there, which isn’t bad because there weren’t any  star players . The atmosphere was so exciting that it encouraged the players a lot as soon as they came into the  football pitch  with the  referee . My brother and I were 100 percent focused on the match and provoked the players in two teams for their fair play.

I am really deep into this football match for a number of reasons. Firstly, the players in two teams are not the professors, but they really ensured fair play and no  red and yellow cards  were released. Secondly, because of the charity aim of the match, the ticket fair then was donated for this local school and poor children, so I felt happy to contribute something to help other people.

In fact, it is the most unforgettable match that I have ever lively watched.

Being a sports fanatic, I have an uncanny knack for relishing every type of game. However, I am a bit unbiased toward cricket matches. While I prefer watching cricket matches on TV, I visit a stadium whenever I get an opportunity. So, on one such occasion, I had a chance to visit Bangalore to watch a live cricket match. It was back in 2018, and the IPL season was at its peak. The game was between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings.

When I entered the stadium, I saw that it was jampacked, and the environment was breathtaking. There were both national and international people cheering for their preferred teams. Since I was seated close to the pavilion, I somehow managed to get a selfie clicked with Virat Kohli. The crowd was going berserk whenever a player scored a six, four or got a wicket.

The experience was immensely enriching for me. I was ecstatic to see significant players giving their best shots, just at a distance. That was when I realised how difficult it is to concentrate on the game when thousands of people are present all around, chanting, encouraging and sometimes abusing.

Regardless of the match’s outcome, this delightful experience will always stay etched in my memories.

The International English Language Testing System or IELTS is an English language proficiency test taken for study, migration, or work. The test comprises four sections: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Coming from a country where our mother tongue is not the English language, it can get tricky to ace the speaking exam.

This article will decode the key differences between a high-scored essay and a low-scored one to understand how you can practice and achieve that high band. The topic that this IELTS cue Card discusses is Describe A Live Sports Match That You Watched.

I have always been a die-hard fan of sports, particularly cricket, throughout my life. Ace cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar, was my icon, and I still remember how much I cried the day he retired. Over the years, I have watched several matches on the ground with my family and friends. However, there was one such match that struck a chord with me.

I remember I was in the tenth standard when the final match between India and Pakistan was held in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2007. It was the first time T20 World Cup was held. I was particularly excited to see how India performed as my second favorite cricketer, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was leading India.

India had chosen to bat first in the final match, which I felt was reasonable. Gautam Gambhir began the innings and gave 75 runs over 52 balls, despite India losing wickets at close intervals. Moreover, Rohit Sharma also aced India to catch up to a competitive score of 157 over 5 wickets in 20 overs.

Luckily, Pakistan also lost a lot of wickets even though Imran Nazir made some awe-inspiring shots. The final over kept us going and shocked us when India won by a meager 5 runs. What a save, I must say! All in all, I enjoyed that my country won under the leadership of a top player like MS Dhoni. The entire team played well, and it was their hard work that brought the trophy home.

To this day, this was my favorite experience of a live sports match.

I have watched many live sports matches. I loved them as I spent time with my parents or friends who usually accompanied me. Out of all such outings, my favorite is the live football matches I got to watch. Although it is not as popular in India as other games like cricket or badminton, I thoroughly enjoy football and look forward to these matches.

My elder brother and his college team played one such game against a rival college team. My brother was the captain of his college team. It was a make-or-break situation, as the team that lost the game would be disqualified from the tournament. This was the first time their college team had come this far in the game, so there was no going back.

I sat in the front row with my mother as both the teams entered the grounds. We both hooted for my brother as he looked at us and smiled.

The game had three rounds, and the team that won two or more rounds qualified further. Unfortunately, my brother’s team could not score a goal in the first round, and this was a significant setback for the team. Thus, my mother went to my brother's room and encouraged my brother. Her motivation was enough for him to sail his team to win through the second round. Although it was a challenging situation, my brother's team won with some smart decisions and solid teamwork. This was one of the happiest moments for my brother as a team captain, and I was so glad I could celebrate with him. Till date, this remains my favorite live match.

With the help of technology- televisions and mobile phones, you can today watch live matches from the comfort of your homes. All you need to do is subscribe to the channel and pay a certain amount, and you can easily watch the entire match with the stadium audience. The feeling of a live match at a stadium is delightful since the stadiums and grounds bring thousands of people together. Whether there’s happiness that your team is winning or if there is a tense environment with the team struggling to score, all of it is amazing.

  • – What it was like?
  • – And how you felt about it?

Band 9.0 Sample Answer Ideas .

• A Sports Centre has been recently inaugurated in MY city, and I had a chance to visit it last month.

• I came to know about it through the local newspaper.

• The Sports Center was inaugurated by the famous hockey player Pargat Singh and is named after the hockey legend Dhyan Chand.

• Many different sports such as soccer and hockey are played at this stadium and it also has professional coaching staff.

• One can go and learn different kinds of sports activities or just simply go and hang out with your friends.

• Since it opened, the Sports Center was on my must-visit radar.

• So, when I found out that The Chandigarh Tigers were playing Football in a friendly match on 20th August, I made it a point to buy tickets so that I could have fun at the new Stadium.

• I must say that when I arrived at the 10-hectare Stadium, I was swept away by the thrill and flurry that filled the air.

• There were football fans getting ready to come into the Stadium to support the Home team.

• There were diners, shoppers, families, and the curious ones – like me all enthusiastic and impatient to visit our fresh sports icon.

• The stadium comprises an extensive variety of venues, specifically, a 35,000-capacity stadium, 4,000-capacity Aquatics Centre, 1,500-capacity Sports Arenas, a Water Sports Centre, a Library, and about 25,000 square meters of trading and dining hall.

• I felt pleased that I had the chance to visit this remarkable stadium and be part of history, watching the first ever football game played in the new Stadium of the city.

IELTS Speaking part 3 Follow Up Questions .

Here are some follow up questions you may be asked during part 3 IELTS Speaking exam by the IELTS examiner related to 1st cue card:

“Describe a live sports match that you have watched”

1. Do you prefer to watch live sports or watch it on TV?

I prefer watching sports on the TV.  I think the Televisions have improved so much over the recent times that the experience is the same as watching it live.

Moreover, the luxury of sitting in the comfort of one’s house cannot be matched.

2. Why do some people like to watch live sports?

I think watching sports live is much more about spending quality time with friends and family.

People go there to break the monotony of everyday life and do something different. For some, it is also about the possibility of meeting or getting an autograph from their favourite sportsperson.

3. What kind of sports do Indian people like to watch?

Indians are crazy about many sports like hockey, football, but I think nothing can come close to the popularity of cricket. I think nearly everyone watches cricket and many play it also.

In fact, many Indians in foreign countries also play cricket even though the game isn’t popular there.

4. Do you think competition is good for students?

Certainly, I think competition makes us students work harder. Life without competition would be very boring.

Moreover, the growing population means that competition is only going to increase in the future, so it better for students to learn to handle competition from early childhood.

How To Describe A Basketball Game In A Story (17 Tips + Examples)

Sometimes you need to write a basketball scene in a story, essay, or paper.

Here’s how to describe a basketball game:

Describe a basketball game in writing by focusing on the game’s dynamics, player roles, strategies, and emotional highs and lows. Capture the scene with vivid play-by-play descriptions, basketball terminology, and vivid imagery. Highlight climactic moments for an immersive reader experience.

In this guide, you’ll learn everything you need to know about how to describe a basketball game in writing.

You Must Understand the Dynamics of Basketball

Close up image of a basketball held by a player - How to Describe a Basketball game

Table of Contents

When describing a basketball game in a story, it’s essential to have a good grasp of the game’s fundamentals and the life lessons it imparts.

Recognizing the dynamics of basketball not only paints a vivid picture of the gameplay but also reveals insights into players’ resilience and perseverance. Icons like  Michael Jordan  and  LeBron James  embody the truth that even the best fail, but it’s through these failures that character is developed and successes are celebrated.

Grasping these principles allows writers to deliver a narrative that reflects the true spirit of the sport.

You are able to illustrate the parallels between basketball and life’s challenges, such as the importance of hard work, determination, and embracing the game’s unpredictable nature.

To better understand the dynamics of basketball and craft an engaging basketball game description, let’s go into the key areas of the game that demand attention:

  • Rules and Gameplay
  • Positions and Player Roles
  • Offensive Strategies
  • Defensive Strategies
  • Key Statistical Measures

Having a solid understanding of these elements helps in forming a comprehensive basketball gameplay explanation that does justice to the sport’s intricacies and excitement.

ComponentDescription
Rules and GameplayLearn the fundamental rules, such as dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, and fouls. Mastering these basics allows for a more accurate and engaging game commentary.
Positions and Player RolesUnderstand the responsibilities of point guards, shooting guards, small forwards, power forwards, and centers. Describing roles and the unique skill sets of each player helps bring the story to life.
Offensive StrategiesGet well-versed in various offensive tactics, such as pick and roll, give and go, isolation plays, and fast breaks. Describing these strategies adds depth to the game narration.
Defensive StrategiesLearn about defensive approaches like man-to-man, zone defense, and full-court press. Adequate knowledge of defensive schemes allows for a comprehensive game description, showcasing both the offensive and defensive aspects of basketball.
Key Statistical MeasuresBe familiar with stats like points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks as they help quantify players’ performances and substantiate claims made about their abilities in the story.

Here is a good video about basketball because you can’t describe what you don’t understand:

Set the Scene for Basketball Action

To effectively set the scene in a basketball narrative, one must convey the ambiance of the arena—throngs of spectators, the resonant buzz of anticipation, and the unique energy that pervades the space before the game begins.

This atmosphere is where friendships forge, and camaraderie among fans and players alike is palpable.

Capture the Atmosphere of the Arena

As you walk into the basketball arena, the air is thick with excitement.

You can sense the anticipation of the crowd, the eager energy in the stands, and the unmistakable sounds of the game: the squeak of sneakers, the ball bouncing on the court, and the blaring music pump up the audience for the upcoming match.

The arena ambiance plays a crucial role in setting the basketball scene, as it sets the stage for the drama and action that unfolds on the court.

Introduce the Teams and Players

An essential aspect of describing a basketball match is introducing the competing teams and their players.

The backstories and personalities of each player enrich the narrative, offering contrasting dynamics between the opposing teams.

You might consider detailing notable players from each side, discussing their accomplishments, strengths, and weaknesses.

In addition, focusing on physical characteristics and emotional mindsets, such as a rookie’s nervous energy or a veteran’s calm focus, can offer glimpses into their lives and motivations as they prepare for the game.

Describe the Opening Moments

The start of the game sets the tone for the narrative.

As the players take their positions and the referee prepares for the tip-off, the roar of the crowd grows louder. The sense of urgency and anticipation are palpable.

It’s these opening moments that can hook the reader, drawing them into the unfolding action as if stepping onto the court themselves.

Consider this example:

The crowd held their breath as the ball was tossed into the air for the tip-off. The players, bodies tense and minds focused, leaped upward, each attempting to secure the first possession of the game. The ball was tipped into the hands of the point guard, who darted across the court, ready to execute the first play. The match had begun, and the arena erupted into a cacophony of cheers and applause.

By articulating team dynamics, capturing the game start, and sharing first impressions in basketball, one can craft a compelling narrative that immerses the reader in the action-packed world of the sport.

Incorporate Basketball Terminology

When writing about a basketball game, it’s crucial to use accurate terminology to lend authenticity to your narrative and educate readers who may be new to the sport.

Familiarizing yourself with common basketball terms will allow you to transform your game descriptions from generic to gripping.

In this section, we will explore some essential basketball terms and their meanings, and discuss how you can seamlessly integrate them into your storytelling.

  • Field Goal Percentage:  This statistic measures a player’s shooting accuracy by comparing the number of successful field goals (any shot other than a free throw) to the total number of attempts. A higher percentage indicates greater efficiency in scoring.
  • Three-Pointer:  A shot made from beyond the three-point arc, resulting in three points scored instead of the standard two points for other field goals.
  • Block:  A defensive play in which a player deflects or redirects an opponent’s shot, preventing the ball from reaching the basket.

Now let’s explore how to integrate these terms into your basketball game analysis:

TermExample Usage in a Story
Field Goal PercentageAfter their intense practice sessions, the team’s   witnessed a significant improvement, which ultimately contributed to them securing a spot in the playoffs.
Three-PointerWith only seconds left on the clock, the tension in the arena was palpable. The crowd held their breath as the star player took a shot from downtown – and just like that, a game-winning   sealed the victory! The stadium erupted in applause.
BlockAs the opposing team’s forward drove to the basket, our team’s center deftly executed a perfectly-timed  , sending the shot ricocheting off-course. This crucial defensive play re-energized the team and served as the catalyst for a thrilling offensive run.

By understanding the nuances of basketball terminology and seamlessly weaving these terms into your storytelling, you can create a more immersive and authentic experience for readers while also demonstrating your expertise in basketball game analysis.

Craft Vivid Play-by-Play Descriptions

To create a captivating play-by-play basketball description, it’s essential to focus on the finer details that make each moment come alive.

A well-written account enables readers to visualize the action as if they were watching the game unfold in real time. By emphasizing the key plays and player movements, your detailed game narrative can transport readers to the edge of their seats.

Highlighting Key Plays and Player Movements

Conveying the excitement of a basketball game requires a keen eye for the most impactful plays and moments.

It’s essential to highlight moments that shift the momentum of the game, such as a game-changing block or steal, or a three-pointer that ties the score. By emphasizing these critical moments, your narrative will erupt with tension, keeping readers deeply engaged.

When describing player movements, it’s vital to depict the fluidity and intensity of their actions.

For example, portray a player’s lightning-fast drive to the basket, weaving through defenders, or the precise execution of a pick-and-roll, leaving a teammate open for an easy layup. These evocative descriptions allow readers to experience the thrill of the game as if they were court-side.

Adding depth to your game narrative also involves capturing the players’ physicality and emotions.

Describing the way a player’s muscles tense as they leap to block a shot or their determination in chasing down a loose ball provides a more vivid and immersive experience for your readers.

Showcasing pivotal plays and emotions (examples):

  • Record-breaking performances: “In the final quarter, Steph Curry shattered the record for most three-pointers in a single game, leaving the crowd in awe.”
  • Displays of teamwork: “With seamless ball movement and communication, the players effortlessly found each other on the court, leading to a well-executed alley-oop.”
  • Impactful defensive plays: “Rudy Gobert, the towering 7-foot-1 center, swatted away the opponent’s shot with ease, sending the ball into the stands.”

Remember, your goal is to provide an immersive experience for your readers. Keep the energy high, be attentive to detail, and maintain the sense of anticipation and suspense throughout your play-by-play basketball description.

This approach will create a gripping narrative that keeps readers enthralled from start to finish.

Building Tension and Momentum

A well-crafted basketball story relies on  building momentum in narratives  and skillfully escalating game drama

Conveying basketball game tension and presenting a  tense sports storytelling  experience is key to keeping readers enthralled from tip-off to the final buzzer. Like the genuine experience of players and spectators, the intensity should ebb and flow with each quarter.

Start by showcasing the initial balanced competition, where both teams vie for dominance on the court.

Readers should feel the adrenaline building as players execute breathtaking plays and the scoreboard shifts in favor of one team or another. Keep your audience on the edge of their seats as you craft a crescendo of tension and excitement that permeates the entire match.

To bolster dramatic tension and momentum, pay attention to:

  • Surprising moments that shift the advantage between teams
  • Key player rivalries and high-stakes matchups
  • Timeouts – describe coaches adjusting strategies and players catching their breath

As the game’s intensity peaks, incorporate immersive descriptions of the mounting pressure in the final minutes.

The closing stages of a basketball game are ripe for dramatic storytelling, and the right words can make readers feel like they’re courtside, sharing in the players’ sweat, determination, and passion.

The experience of watching a thrilling basketball game is akin to watching a dramatic movie or reading an action-packed novel: as tension rises, we can’t help but be emotionally invested. Harnessing this excitement in your sports narrative is all about striking the delicate balance between the physical and the emotional.

Using specific examples and vivid details can help bring your prose to life:

  • Turnovers leading to fast break opportunities
  • Last-second clutch shots that alter the outcome of the game
  • Player emotions, from the elation of victory to the devastation of defeat

By paying close attention to these elements and weaving together a narrative that captures the excitement and tension of basketball, you’ll effectively build momentum and create a compelling, nail-biting sports story.

Player Reactions and Crowd Engagement

The intense energy permeating a basketball game comes from the emotions experienced by players on the court as well as the crowd’s engagement.

Writing about player reactions, such as the elation of a game-winning shot or the devastation of a critical error, humanizes these athletes and brings them to life. Readers are immersed in not only the tactical aspects of the game but also its emotional core.

Crowd engagement amplifies these emotions, with the audience reacting to each triumph and heartbreak alongside the players.

Describing the electrifying connection that transcends team allegiance, as fans rally behind memorable performances and empathize with crushing defeats, further strengthens the bond between your story and the readers.

Impact of a Basketball Game on Narratives

In capturing the emotions of basketball games, writers can illustrate the significant impact these events have on the wider narrative.

The outcome of a game can significantly influence the story’s direction, character development, and the relationships between players and communities. By highlighting basketball-induced narrative shifts, readers are privy to the powerful emotional repercussions brought about by the sport.

Basketball games can serve as a backdrop for personal growth, with players learning valuable life lessons from their experiences on the court.

Relationships are forged and tested, both among teammates and within the community, as the game transcends beyond the boundaries of the playing surface.

Notable Examples of Emotional Repercussions in Basketball Stories:

  • Michael Jordan’s first retirement and subsequent comeback, inspiring a generation of basketball fans with his resilience and determination.
  • The profound impact of the personal loss of a teammate, driving a team to band together and achieve success in memory of their fallen comrade.
  • The incredible underdog victory of a small-town high school team in a major tournament, uniting the entire community in celebration and renewed hope.

Ultimately, capturing emotional highs and lows in basketball storytelling not only makes for a compelling narrative but also underlines the sport’s profound influence on the lives of those who play and bear witness to it.

By authentically conveying these emotions, readers are transported into the dynamic world of basketball.

They are left with a profound appreciation for the game’s impact both on and off the court.

Utilizing Metaphors and Similes

Metaphors and similes are powerful literary devices that can elevate basketball narratives by creating vivid imagery for readers.

These comparisons enable you to express complex emotions, evoke unforgettable scenes, and make the action on the court relatable and engaging.

Here are some examples of effectively employing metaphors and similes in basketball descriptions:

  • Agility:  His quick movements on the court made him seem as graceful as a ballerina.
  • Pressure:  The atmosphere in the arena was as tense as a tightrope walker’s wire.
  • Teamwork:  They moved seamlessly together, like cogs in a well-oiled machine.
  • Strength:  The power of his jump was reminiscent of a lion pouncing on its prey.

Additionally, using these literary devices can help you emphasize specific aspects of the game, like players’ unique qualities or the shared spirit of the team.

A well-placed simile or metaphor can impart a deeper understanding of individual roles within the game and inspire readers to connect with the story on a more emotional level.

To further illustrate how these metaphorical and comparative techniques can enhance your basketball narrative, consider the following list of examples:

SubjectSimile/Metaphor
Dominant PlayerMichael Jordan was the king of the court, ruling over his opponents with unmatched skill and confidence.
High-Stakes GameThe crowd’s energy was palpable, as if electricity were coursing through the stands.
Rapid ScoringThey rained down threes like a storm, breaking the game wide open.
Unyielding DefenseArmed with stifling defense, their opponents found it impossible to penetrate their fortress-like formation.
Moment of VictoryThe winning shot floated through the air like a feather before fulfilling its destiny, clinching the game in the final seconds.

Illustrate the Game’s Climactic Endings

Basketball frequently delivers some of the most thrilling game endings.

The climactic moments of a basketball game can leave fans on the edge of their seats, making it essential for writers to effectively capture these instances in their narratives.

Reflect on the iconic 1998 NBA Finals Game 6, where Michael Jordan’s memorable last-second basket clinched the win for the Chicago Bulls.

The tension was palpable as he released the ball, and the euphoria that followed his successful basket became an unforgettable moment in sports history.

Such a scenario offers endless opportunities for vivid descriptions that truly immerse readers in the game.

Whether recounting a heart-stopping buzzer-beater, an improbable comeback, or a game-winning block, capturing these climactic moments in writing can grip a reader’s emotions and make them feel part of the action.

As a result, they experience the intense triumphs and agonizing defeats that characterize this beloved sport, leaving them eager for more thrilling basketball narratives.

One of the finest methods to maintain physical and mental fitness is to play sports. Sports are incredibly important to human life. People who take part in the festivities get a boost of energy from it, and the delights are beyond words . Additionally, it aids in the development of a certain talent that is applicable to daily life.

A variety of athletic activities are also planned, with the main goals being to foster camaraderie among the participants, encourage them to play more, and help them advance their knowledge, proficiency, and mastery in their chosen sports. In exchange for their ads, business entities are often in charge of supporting the events.

One of the most thrilling sports is basketball, and I like playing in the games that our institution hosts. I watched a thrilling indoor basketball competition a few months ago. The colleges in our city planned the event. Regretfully, my injury sustained during practice the day before the tournament prevented me from taking part in the contest.

The indoor sports court of our college served as the venue for the intercollegiate basketball tournament. The last competition was held the specified day in the evening. Nearly all of the city’s students came to see the tournament. They felt compelled to participate in the championship match since the prior matchups were so thrilling. On the day of the tournament, our indoor sporting gallery was packed with spectators who had gathered early to secure their seats before others took them.

The fight had a lot of appeal. With 25 points, our squad has outscored the opposition, who only had 17 points. Our college team prevailed in the game by a significant margin , mostly due to the players’ excellent preparation, knowledge of one another, and teamwork in winning the competition.

As a team member, the match was quite exciting for me, and I completely forgot about my injuries sustained during a leap attempt to toss the ball into the net, which left my right leg injured. For those of us who were part of the playing team, it was a win.

1.3. Bài mẫu 2 – Describe an exciting competition or sporting event you have witnessed

I have a chance to see the AFC U-23 Championship championship game on television in 2018. Unfortunately, the wintertime weather on the day of the competition was appalling . Changzhou was the venue. Because of the severe snowfall, it was difficult for the crowd to recognize the Uzbekistan squad despite their white uniforms.

To further the competition, it was a hard-fought soccer encounter between the two nations until, fifteen minutes into the contest, the Uzbekistan side scored the opening goal. Following that, the Vietnam side made many unsuccessful attempts to make up ground on the score.

But when a player from Uzbekistan fouled , our team was awarded a free kick. The coach decided to use Quang Hai as his trump card to make the kick at that precise moment. Since he scored the first goal in the final minutes of the first half, it was not surprising that the mood was high.

As the second half approached, players from both nations were moving more quickly since they were all focused on winning. I could sense the tension and excitement on the field as I watched the TV. However, Uzbekistan’s second goal from a corner gave the Vietnamese cause for concern. The guys’ anguish at losing the game was evident to me; they had gone so far.

Vietnam finished the Championship as the runner-up. Even though I was a little disappointed that my nation did not win, I was proud of the players for giving the competition their best.

1.3.1. Vocabulary Highlights

  • Appalling (adj): kinh khủng
  • Hard-fought (adj): chiến đấu kiên cường
  • Fouled (v): bị phạm lỗi
  • Trump card (n): con át chủ bài
  • Anguish (n): đau khổ

2. IELTS Speaking part 3: Describe an exciting competition or sporting event you have witnessed

IELTS Speaking part 3 Describe an exciting competition or sporting event you have witnessed

2.1. Is sport important?

For all people, sports are essential to their lives. For instance, it is no surprise that schools provide physical education classes as they allow pupils to engage in physical activity, which is very different from sitting still in other subjects. The fact that sporting events frequently draw sponsorships is another significant factor. As a result, this will be a successful strategy for promoting a product to prospective buyers and increasing sales.

2.2. Do you agree that sports stars earn too much money?

This is something I really disagree with for a number of reasons. A sports player must first adhere to a rigorous training regimen and nutrition in order to become a star. They should set aside their own preferences or have little to no time in their early years to develop a network outside of the training facility in order to accomplish their aims. In addition to the publicity they will garner, their privacy will be ruthlessly invaded .

2.3. Do you think children get enough exercise these days?

Regretfully, no. This problem is said to result from parents’ emphasis on their kids’ academic performance. Young people are frequently required to study for 10 to 12 hours a day in order to get into prominent schools , which means exercising plays a little or nonexistent role in their lives. However, since kids are so driven to phones and the internet, they are also somewhat to blame. As a result , they don’t have any time for outside activities or sports.

2.4. What is the most popular sport in your country?

Football is the most popular sport in my nation and has earned the title of “King of Sports.” On a football field, two teams will defend, attempt to seize the ball , pass it to teammates, and try to score a goal. They also attempt to prevent bookings and injuries. Because football revives such an exciting environment, people prefer it over other sports.

  • Seize the ball (v): giành bóng

  • Describe a time when you saw a lot of plastic waste
  • Describe a meal that you enjoyed eating in a restaurant
  • Describe a time when you helped someone

2.5. What are the best ways to keep fit?

One of the greatest methods to stay in shape is to exercise for at least one hour every day. Additionally, one can take part in athletics. Participating in sports helps athletes gain more endurance , which helps them stay fit forever. A nutritious diet and excellent lifestyle choices are two other crucial components of staying in shape in addition to exercise.

2.6. What is the most popular form of exercise in your country?

In my nation, walking is the most common form of exercise. Many individuals go for morning walks, while those who find it difficult to manage their time in the morning sometimes finish their walks in the evening or at night. In addition, jogging and running in open spaces are common forms of exercise in my nation.

2.7. How can we encourage young people to stay healthy?

One’s health is regarded as the most valuable asset. People must be aware of the negative consequences of being unwell as well as the kinds of diseases that might develop in tandem with worsening health. There may be extensive media campaigns promoting the value of excellent health. The government should also build more gyms and sports facilities.

  • Asset (n): tài sản
  • In tandem with: song song với

2.8. Should governments intervene to force people to be healthier?

I think force is not necessary in any situation if a man is made to understand anything in the correct way. In a similar vein , there is no need for government involvement to mandate healthy living. People will attempt to maintain their own health once they are aware of the detrimental effects of being unwell.

  • In a similar vein: tương tự như vậy

IELTS CUE CARD TOPIC

NOTE  –  The examiner gives you one minute to plan your answer ,  and to help you prepare for the topic, the examiner provides you with a pencil and a notepad. You’ll have to answer the questions given on the topic for one-to-two minutes

Sample Answer 1

Introduction:

  • Being a cricket fanatic, I have an uncanny knack for watching cricket matches.
  • I always find it comfortable to watch a cricket match from the comfort of my home.
  • However, on one occasion, I specially went to Mumbai to watch a live cricket match.

What it was?,  and  When you watched it?

  • It was in the year 2013.
  • I went to Mumbai to see a cricket match between India and West Indies.
  •  It was the last match of Mr Sachin Tendular, a legendary batsman.

What it was like?

  • The environment inside the stadium was breathtaking.
  • The stadium was jampacked .
  • People from faraway nations like Canada had come to watch Sachin playing for the last time in an international match.
  • Since I was standing close to the pavilion, I managed to get the autograph of Sachin.
  • When India won the game, the crowd went berserk .
  • When Sachin was leaving the grounds, most of the people had wet eyes.

And how you felt about it?

  • It was an emotionally enriching experience for me.
  • On the other hand, I was happy that finally, I got a chance to see Sachin playing live in a cricket match.
  • But, on the other hand, I was sad deep inside because it was his last international cricket game.
  • That day I learnt, an important lesson , and that nothing is permanent in this world.
  • Sachin Tendulkar played international cricket for 24 years, and his career ended that day. It shows that good things also come to an end.
  • Therefore we must accept change in our lives.
  • The wonderful experience of that match would always remain etched in my memories .

Sample Answer 2

Introduction

  • Being an ardent fan of cricket, I watch most cricket matches.

What it was?, and When you watched it?

  • Although I watch most of the matches on television, last year I watched a live international cricket match.
  • I watched it at the newly built international cricket stadium near my hometown.
  • The constant roars from the crowd made the match more interesting.
  • In the middle of the game, I met friends from my college .
  • I joined their group, and we all had guffaws of laughter .
  • Since it was a day and night match, the 2nd innings was played under floodlights .
  • During that time, the whole crowd went berserk.
  • For me, it was a dream come true
  • It was an out of the world experience for me.
  • For the first few minutes, I couldn’t believe my eyes.
  • My favourite sports stars like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and David Warner were playing right in front of me.
  • That day I realized that the best place to watch a cricket match is the cricket stadium.
  • When we watch it on the television, we do not get the right feel.
  • Whereas at the stadium, you feel as if you are a team member and you are helping your team by cheering up for the players.
  • The day became special because, after many struggles, Team India won the match
  • Immediately after the game was over, I managed to go close to Virat Kohli .
  • I had asked for his autograph, and he humbly accepted my request.

Sample Answer 3

  • Being a football player, I do not get enough chances to watch a live match as an audience.
  • Because most of the times, I have to participate as a player
  • However, recently due to an unforeseen contingency , I got an opportunity to watch a live football match
  • Last month, there was a match between our college and St. Stephen’s college football team.
  • I was a part of my college team and eagerly waiting to participate in that match.
  • However, just before the match, I met with an accident.
  • I didn’t get many injuries, but I had swelling on my right foot.
  • After a discussion with my coach, I decided not to play the match.
  • However, I stayed at the stadium to watch the match and cheer for my team.
  • Since, the game was between two of the best teams in our city, there was a huge crowd at the stadium.
  • After the first half, I had gone to my team’s dressing room and advised my team.
  • My team was lagging by one goal at the starting of the second half.
  • Nevertheless, we won the match.
  • Upon winning, the captain told me that my advice had helped them to score three goals
  • Initially, I was upset for not being a part of the team.
  • But as the match had progressed, I started enjoying it.
  • Moreover, I realized that we can learn about the game not only by playing it but also by watching it.
  • The quality time I had during the match would always remain etched in my memories.

Sample Answer 4

There is no denying this conviction that sports play a vital role in people’s life. Due to this reason, a rising number of individuals play various games in this contemporary epoch . People these days prefer both indoor and outdoor sports. Although playing a sport is the ultimate fun, watching a live sports match works like a charm.

Being a sports enthusiast, I find extreme pleasure in playing sports. I am a big fan of soccer, and my favourite player is Ronaldo. I have this habit of watching every match played by him on Tv.

What it was?  and  When you watched it?

However, I would like to talk about a soccer match arranged last year by the local authorities to motivate more young adults to participate. In reality, I was a key member of the team, yet I did not take part in that match because of an injury.

The injury forced me not to play that match. However, I had a close look at it while sitting in the stadium.

Initially, I had apprehensions about whether I would enjoy the game or not. But as the match had progressed, I started enjoying it. Till the end of the match the situation kept on changing and the audience remained too much engrossed in the game. People were screaming to buck up the players. In the match, both teams played with determination, dedication and discipline . Finally, our team won the game by one goal.

For me, it was an enticing experience to see both the team players showing sportsman spirit by hugging each other to exhibit their optimistic attitude . Finally, during the prize distribution ceremony, the best performers the players who performed well were given trophies.

Conclusion:

All in all, it was a different kind of experience for me.

IELTS Speaking Part 3: Follow up Questions

Here are some examples of follow up questions that the examiner might ask during your speaking part 3 related to cue card “ Describe a live sports match that you have watched ”.

1. Do you prefer to watch live sports or watch them on TV?

Being a sports enthusiast, I love to watch live sports. However, due to a shortage of time, I have to watch it on television. Although there are many advantages of watching a sports match on television, it cannot beat the fun and excitement generated in a stadium.

2. Why do some people like to watch live sports?

The main reason is the environment inside the stadium or playground. There is no denying this conviction that sports matches shown on television these days are beautifully picturised, yet they cannot match the excitement shown in a live match. When you are in the middle of the crowd in a stadium, you feel like an integral part of the playing squad.

3. What kind of sports do Indian people like to watch?

In the past decades, most Indians used to watch live cricket matches. There was a relatively small audience for other sports. However, nowadays, Indian people show interest in the live telecast of all kinds of sports like hockey, football, tennis, basketball and so on. And due to this massive change, many sports which were on the verge of extinction have revived. Kabaddi is the prime example of this, due to a league of Kabaddi it is back in focus.

4. Do you think competition is good for students?

Yes, competition is worthwhile for students because it brings the best out of them. When they compete, they plan and execute. Sometimes they have to adopt new strategies and techniques to beat the opponent. The biggest benefit they get is that they learn how to work with determination, dedication and discipline. Therefore, healthy competition brings a paradigm shift in the lives of children.

Describe a Live Sports Match that You have Watched: IELTS Cue Card Sample One

Being an ardent fan of cricket, I watch cricket almost every single day and have watched all the cricket matches till now. But I’ve always preferred watching cricket matches in the stadium and for that, I’ve travelled overseas many a times. But I’ve always liked watching cricket matches in my own country because the vibe that is there in the cricket stadiums is just amazing.

People singing the national anthem of our country, the goosebumps that I get every time I hear it – all of this feels so good!

So, today I’ll be sharing with you the one time that I went to watch a live match which was my best experience I had till now.

What was It?

There are times when I have to watch cricket matches in the comfort of my home – sitting with my family and friends; having popcorn in our hands. It’s just amazing. but what’s more, is that I really enjoy watching cricket matches in the cricket stadium. So, it is about the time when I watched a live international cricket match.

When did You Watch the Match?

It was about the month of August back then, I watched this international cricket match at a newly built cricket stadium near my hometown. And Oh! The feeling; was just amazing.

I’ve never felt so good in my entire life I guess; it was an outstanding match. Everywhere the crowd was cheering for their favourite batsmen; birds chirping; the weather was so amazing. It was all just perfect.

What was it Like?

The constant roars from the crowd made the match even more interesting than it was. And the best part was that after an hour or so when the match had started, I met my friends from my college. So, we all joined each other and had guffaws of laughter.

This match was a day and night match, the 2nd innings was played under floodlights. During this time, the whole crowd went berserk.

How did You Feel about It?

For me, this was like a dream come true. It was an outstanding and out-of-the-world experience for me. I enjoyed it so much that I can’t even express my feelings in words.

My all-time favourite sports star was just playing in front of me – Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and David Warner – everyone was there just playing so gracefully and effortlessly in front of me. It was so inspiring to see them in front of me. And it was the day that I decided to watch almost all the matches in the cricket stadium only. I loved this experience.

And what made the day even more special was the fact that my country, my nation – won the match. Yes! India won the match! And towards the end of the match, I managed to get the autograph of Mr Virat Kohli. I can never forget that day.

Describe a Live Sports Match that You have Watched: IELTS Cue Card Sample Two

You might have heard people watching live matches every day in the stadium and it’s because those people are able to afford the high amount that these stadium owners charge for a single match. But to be honest, I’ve never got the opportunity to watch even a single match in the stadium and that’s not because I don’t enjoy watching it – this is because I really cannot afford to pay those high amounts; that’s just too much for me.

But it was that one time that I was lucky enough to watch a match – a live match in the stadium.

So, today I’ll be sharing my experience with you.

I really like basketball and it was that one time that I was lucky enough to watch a match in the stadium. So, one day I was listening to the radio and was enjoying my work along with listening to some great music and that’s when it happened.

On the radio, the RJ asked a question and I just randomly called their number to provide the answer to that question because I knew it. And to my good luck, they picked up my phone in just a single ring and Voila! my answer was absolutely correct.

But what came after that was something that I had never expected – I won two tickets for the latest basketball match that was happening in our town back then. I was shocked, surprised, and happy at the same time.

I watched the match a week after I gave the answer to that question and decided to take my sister with me who is a big-time basketball fan. We both went all dressed up to enjoy the match and have the best time of our lives.

It was just an amazing feeling.

The stadium was all crowded and most of the crowd that could be seen that day were just university students who were all excited, enthusiastic, and were providing their overwhelming support to the respective teams.

When the match started, the crowd went all gaga and they just went crazy and started cheering for their teams, and singing their jingle for the teams they were supporting.

I felt so good about it – it was an astounding feeling enjoying the match in front of my eyes. I can never forget this surreal experience that I had back then. All thanks to that radio show that provided me with such an astonishing opportunity to have such an eye-changing experience.

PS: Fun Fact – From that day onwards, I have started taking part in more radio quizzes so that I could get as many opportunities to watch more live matches as before.

Initially, he invented the game by using a rectangular pitch which was 6 feet wide and 4 feet high. Additionally, the court includes a free throw line which is 12 feet long. In basketball essay, students will get to know about the different components that make the game of basketball special.

Basketball Essay

It is a team game that has gained immense popularity. Also, the game is played with the help of a ball and the ball is shot into the basket that is positioned horizontally. So, the objective in the game is to shoot the ball and score the maximum points. This game is played by 2 teams that constitute a total of 5 players each. Also, the game is played on a marked rectangular floor that has a basket on both the ends.

Originally, basketball was played using a soccer ball. Also, it was James Naismith that used a peach basket which ha ad a nonhollow bottom. So, this basket was nailed at a height of 10 ft. above the ground and on an elevated track. If you consider the manual removal of the ball from the basket a drawback then the bottom was removed to and it took the shape of modern-day baskets. Also, dribbling was not part of the game initially. Eventually, it evolved till 1950 by which the balls got better shape due to manufacturing.

Additionally, the orange ball was evolved from the brown ball. The brown ball was used in the beginning as it was thought that the ball is more visible. By 1996, the peach baskets used were replaced by metal hoops on the backboard.

Basketball Game

At the start of the game, a referee tosses the ball at the center of the court between two players. One player from either team try to get their hands on the ball and the ball is passed on to the teammates. For scoring a point, a team needs to shoot the ball through the basket. If a shot is scored from a distance that is closer to the basket than the 3 point line than it fetches 2 points. Also, if the ball is shot from the distance behind 3 point line, it fetches 3 points. So, the team that has a maximum number of points is declared the winner.

In case of a draw, there may be additional time allotted to both the teams. In the game, a player is cannot move if he is holding the ball. The player needs to dribble, otherwise, it is considered as a foul. Likewise, when there is a physical contact that affects the other team then it counted as a physical foul.

Basketball is game played with a maintained and carefully marked court. It is a team sport that is commonly found in many different areas.
