Pembekalan Penulisan Esai dan Wawancara IISMA 2022

Dalam rangka mempersiapkan Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) 2022 yang dilaksanakan oleh Direktorat Jenderal Pendidikan Tinggi, Kementerian Pendidikan, dan Kebudayaan (Kemendikbud) Office of International Affair (OIA) Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD) mengadakan talk series dan sosialisasi dengan tajuk “Pembekalan Penulisan Esai dan Wawancara IISMA 2022”. Acara ini digelar secara daring melalui platform Zoom Meeting dan disiarkan langsung melalui kanal YouTube OIA UAD pada Selasa, 1 Maret 2022. Hadir sebagai pemateri adalah Anggito Setiawan Ardiansyah yakni peraih IISMA 2021 di University of Edinburgh Scotland.

Ida Puspita, M.A.Res. selaku Kepala OIA UAD menyampaikan, setiap program studi mampu mengirimkan kandidat yang akan melamar di IISMA 2022. Dalam program IISMA ini tidak bisa lepas dari peran Kepala Program Studi (Kaprodi) karena ada banyak hal yang menyangkut di dalamnya mulai dari persiapan pendaftaran, esai, wawancara hingga pemilihan mata kuliah yang wajib dikonfirmasi dengan Kaprodi.

“Tahapan seleksi IISMA yaitu dimulai dengan tahap seleksi berkas, pada tahap ini terdiri atas English Proficiency Test, Personal Statement Essay, Surat Rekomendasi Kampus, dan Transkrip Akademik (minimal 3.0). Jika semua sudah lengkap, nantinya akan diminta seleksi wawancara. Wawancara biasanya dilakukan selama lima belas menit menggunakan bahasa Inggris dan menggali lebih jauh sisi personal dan UAD, juga membicarakan konten esai,” papar Anggito.

Lebih lanjut, Anggito juga menyampaikan tips penulisan esai yaitu sederhana tetapi berdampak besar. Di antaranya tentukan topik sesuai dengan minat di universitas atau negara tujuan, menyusun kalimat pendukung yang relevan dengan topik, pastikan tidak ada poin berulang di esai, proofreading , review ulang esai sampai yakin sudah layak di-submit, dan hindari last-minute application .

Di akhir sesi tanya jawab, Anggito memberikan informasi, untuk menghindari gugup pada sesi wawancara biasakan berlatih wawancara dengan peserta lain yang berasal dari UAD maupun universitas lain. Selain itu pada penulisan esai, Anggito membagi menjadi tiga paragraf. Paragraf pertama berisi pembukaan dan ketertarikan memilih mata kuliah atau program studi yang dipilih, paragraf kedua berisi alasan memilih program IISMA dan prestasi, serta paragraf terakhir berisi kontribusi yang akan diberikan setelah mengikuti program IISMA. [IISMA 2022] Opening Application for the 2022 Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards

Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) is a Government of Indonesia scholarship scheme to fund Indonesian students on mobility programs to overseas universities.  IISMA is designed to accommodate undergraduate students to spend one semester (approximately 16 weeks) at university to study, experience host country culture, and do practical assignments to hone their skills. This program is centrally managed by the Directorate General of Higher Education, Kemdikbudristek (Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology or MoECRT) funded by the Lembaga Pengelola Dana Pendidikan/ Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP). Application of participation is open for undergraduate students from all Indonesian higher education institutions.

The objective of this program is to facilitate Indonesian students to gain knowledge and skills as well as to exchange ideas and culture, and to build networks with their peers, academics, and international community overseas.

This year Kemdikbudristek will send selected qualified students nominated by Indonesian Universities all around Indonesia.

Eligibility

• Enrolled as an active/registered Indonesian student of UGM during application and during the program.
• WNI (Indonesian) and currently residing in Indonesia, and not having dual citizenship.
• 4th and 6th semester student at the time of the application.
• Maximum 23 years of age on July 1, 2022.
• Have never taken study leave ( cuti ) at UGM during your undergraduate program.
• Never participated in a physical international exposure mobility/exchange program
• Have an adequate English proficiency with a minimum score of: iBT ≧ 80, IELTS Score ≧6.0, or Duolingo ≧ 100
• Have a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.00/4.00 proven by the latest academic transcript.
• Recommended by your Home Faculty (Dean/Vice Dean of Academic Affairs/other relevant authorities at Faculty).
• Must process credit recognition obtained from host university to home university upon completion of the program.
• Not currently receiving and/or in process of applying for other fundings/scholarships from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (MoECRT) RI that prohibit you from receiving IISMA Scholarship during the program. Notes for Bidikmisi and KIP students, you must provide letter of statement willing to discontinue the Bidikmisi and KIP scholarship during IISMA program.
• Not currently participating in other Kampus Merdeka programs at the same time as IISMA 2022.
• Have not participated in more than one (1) Kampus Merdeka Program prior to the IISMA 2022.
• Have never violated the rules, norms, and/or laws applied in Indonesia.
• Willing to follow all the regulations which have been set by UGM and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (MoECRT) RI.

Scholarship Coverage

For the Odd Semester Academic Year 2022/2023, IISMA will fund Indonesian students to do their international academic mobility to overseas universities. The scholarship covers*:

• Economic Airfare.
• Accommodation.
• Health Insurance.
• Registration fee/Program fee/Tuition fee.
• Living allowance.
• Quarantine & PCR Test.

  * Coverage will be adjusted accordingly by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemdikbudristek)

• Learning Agreement IISMA 2022 (UGM template) (Please submit 2 Learning Agreements: 1st Choice and 2nd Choice of Host Universities)

• Letter of Statement for Bidik Misi, Beasiswa Unggulan, KIP Applicants (UGM template) (only for applicants who are receiving other scholarships from Kemdikbudristek)

Application Procedures

• Open an application account at the IISMA Portal .
• Submit the aforementioned required documents combined in one PDF file to the Office of International Affairs at UGM by the deadline 1 April 2022 through the online submission link : ugm.id/IISMA2022 .
• Declaration of Non-Enrollment in a Physical/Non-Online International Student Mobility/Exchange Program (template from IISMA).
• Declaration of Clearance from Narcotic, Psychotropic, or other addictive substance (template from IISMA).
• Declaration of Non-Involvement in Sexual Violence (template from IISMA).
• You will proceed the signing of the Declaration on your side to upload all the documents to the IISMA Portal.
• Nominated students will proceed with the online application which will be opened by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemdikbudristek) from 12 March – 12 April 2022.
• The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemdikbudristek) will then proceed with the selection of students.
• The FINAL decision of acceptance will be from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemdikbudristek).

Important Notes:

• Template document for the Declaration will be signed by OIA UGM in advance. Please check IISMA website and register for your application account at the IISMA portal in advance to obtain this document.
• List of programs (participating university partners and courses offered) are announced through IISMA Website .
• The Official Nomination from home university will be provided for each student to upload in their online application at Kemdikbudristek along with the signed Declaration Letter. The sooner you submit your documents to OIA, the sooner we can process your nomination letter.
• As this scholarship is highly competitive , applicants are strongly suggested to strictly follow the basic requirements of the eligibility.
• Any changes and updated information throughout the opening of the application will be notified on this page. Final reference of information will be from the IISMA Website.
• Updated per 24/03/2022: Letter of Enrollment template, Letter of Statement for Bidikmisi and other scholarship recipient from Kemdikbudristek template.
• Updated per 27/03/2022:  Declaration letter will be signed from UGM side in advance and then students proceed in the signing on their side with  materai or  e-materai  value of Rp 10.000,00 for each documents.

IISMA (Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards) merupakan program beasiswa non-degree dari Kemendikbudristek dan LPDP dengan memberikan kesempatan mahasiswa Indonesia untuk belajar di perguruan tinggi terbaik di seluruh dunia selama satu semester. Menariknya, program ini dapat diikuti oleh mahasiswa jenjang sarjana maupun vokasi dengan dua jalur yang berbeda, namun tetap dalam naungan program yang sama. 

Mahasiswa pada program sarjana/D4 dapat mendaftar IISMA di semester 4 atau 6, sedangkan mahasiswa D3 dapat mendaftar di semester 4. • Cek Panduan IISMA di website  https://iisma.kemdikbud.go.id
• Tentukan 2 Pilihan Host University dan Host Country yang sesuai dengan minat kalian
• Screening courses yang ditawarkan pada tiap Host University sesuai minat
• Cek persyaratan English Proficiency Test Host University yang dipilih
• Jika skor Bahasa Inggris masih belum memenuhi syarat atau belum cukup bersaing, pertimbangkan untuk ikut kelas IELTS Superintensive agar dapat memaksimalkan skor IELTS. Ingat : the higher, the better!
• Kelas Superintensive di IELTSpresso dimulai 30 November ya, jangan ketinggalan!

Desember 2023

• Mulai tentukan dan booking tanggal official test IELTS kalian! Apabila kesulitan dalam proses mendaftar official test, kalian bisa juga persiapkan IELTS, serta daftar official test melalui Program Superintensive Bundling. Sebagai referensi kalian, IELTS computer hasil keluar dalam 3-5 hari, IELTS paper hasil keluar dalam  14 hari. • Tulis essay per nomor sesuai dengan kerangka secara lengkap
• Mengikuti mentoring dan sharing session bersama IISMA Alumni
• Cari reviewer/proofreader untuk essaymu
• Mulai persiapkan syarat administrasi dari Kantor Urusan Internasional kampus untuk mendapatkan surat rekomendasi rektor (Cek info di KUI kampus kalian ya!)
• Sebagai informasi tambahan, tanpa surat rekomendasi tertanda rektor dari KUI, kalian tidak bisa mendaftar IISMA

Februari 2024 (Bulan Pendaftaran)

Ketika Panduan IISMA 2024 sudah diterbitkan, segera cek host university yang telah kamu rencanakan (pastikan masih menjadi partner IISMA 2024)

• Crosscheck Essay yang telah dibuat dengan Panduan IISMA 2024 (biasanya sama, namun jika ada perbedaan sedikit tinggal disesuaikan)
• Final Revision Essay dan Final Proofread
• Pastikan semua berkas sudah siap ya! (Surat Rekomendasi dari Rektor, Sertifikat EPT, Transkrip, Surat Pernyataan Mobilitas, Bebas Narkoba, dan perihal Kekerasan Seksual)
• Hubungi Prodi/Fakultas untuk konsultasi mengenai persetujuan pengambilan courses dan transfer kredit
• Submit semua persyaratan dan kamu dinyatakan telah mendaftar IISMA 2024!

Selain mempersiapkan IELTS sebagai salah satu syarat English Proficiency Test, komponen berkas lainnya yang perlu dipersiapkan dengan maksimal adalah Essay! Oleh karena itu, penting untuk menulis dan merangkai essay yang on point, powerful, dan tidak bertele-tele! Berikut adalah beberapa tips yang bisa kamu terapkan untuk membuat essay IISMA-mu lebih powerful,

Fokus Pada “Proses” bukan hanya “Hasil”

Pada salah satu topik essay IISMA, mahasiswa diminta untuk menjelaskan pencapaian akademik dan non-akademik. Satu hal yang kerap salah adalah banyak mahasiswa yang fokus menjabarkan hasil prestasi dibandingkan “proses mendapatkannya”. Untuk membuat essaymu lebih stand-out, jangan lupakan penjabaran proses saat kamu meraih suatu pencapaian akademik atau non-akademik.  Fokus pada “proses meraih sesuatu” lebih bermakna dan dapat menunjukkan bagaimana perjuanganmu dalam meraih sebuah pencapaian. Hal ini tentu lebih meaningful dibandingkan hanya berfokus pada hasil.

Gunakan Metode “STAR”

Metode STAR cukup populer digunakan dalam menulis essay maupun menjawab pertanyaan interview, namun metode ini juga kerap diabaikan. Poin penting dalam menulis essay IISMA adalah jangan bertele-tele! Berdasarkan ketentuan essay pada tahun-tahun sebelumnya, setiap nomor essay hanya dapat dijawab dengan maksimal 350 kata. Jadi, menulis menggunakan metode STAR akan sangat membantu ketika kalian harus menulis essay dengan kata terbatas. STAR adalah kepanjangan dari Situation, Task, Action, and Result. Pada bagian Situation kalian dapat menjelaskan secara singkat mengenai kondisi/masalah/isu/background yang menjadi topik essay kalian. Pada bagian Task, kalian bisa menjabarkan challenge/task dari tanggung jawab yang telah kalian jelaskan pada poin situation. Pada bagian Action, jelaskan aksi/kegiatan yang kalian lakukan untuk mencapai/merespon isu yang telah kalian bangun sebelumnya. Terakhir, Result, jabarkan hasil dari usaha-usaha yang telah kalian lakukan tersebut.

Be True to Yourself

Salah satu hal yang membuat essay unik dan menarik adalah essay memiliki poin storyline yang berbeda dengan kandidat lain. Hal ini dapat dilakukan dengan menulis essay-mu dengan sentuhan cerita personal. Saat menulis essay, penting untuk jujur terhadap diri sendiri dan lakukan refleksi diri! Apa yang ingin kalian ceritakan, apa yang ingin kalian tunjukkan, harus sesuai dengan apa yang ada dalam diri kalian sendiri. Pada essay IISMA, kalian dapat memaksimalkan cerita personal pada essay yang membahas mengenai challenge/hurdle yang kalian alami dan cara mengatasinya. Lakukan refleksi diri dan tulis cerita terbaik kalian beserta cerita perjuangan kalian saat menghadapi masalah dan bangkit dari masalah tersebut. 

Meskipun terlihat sepele, namun sangat penting untuk mempersiapkan aplikasi IISMA lebih awal dengan matang termasuk mempersiapkan English Proficiency Test dan Essay. Selamat berjuang dan semoga sukses!

Salah satu syarat mendapatkan beasiswa IISMA 2023 adalah dengan membuat essay . Cara membuat essay untuk mendapatkan beasiswa IISMA 2023 sebagai berikut:

Bagi yang ingin mendaftar beasiswa IISMA 2023, harus menjawab empat pertanyaan yang harus dijawab oleh pendaftar beasiswa IISMA 2023. Masing-masing pertanyaan harus dijelaskan, dengan jumlah kata antara 150-350.

• Calon pendaftar dipersilakan untuk menjelaskan prestasi akademik dan non akademik yang telah diraih selama menjadi mahasiswa (khusus untuk mahasiswa sarjana dan vokasi). Klasifikasi Esai Jawaban Pendaftar Iisma 2022 Menggunakan Text Mining

IISMA atau Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards adalah Salah satu program dari kurikulum Merdeka Belajar - Kampus Merdeka yang mengirimkan mahasiswa dan mahasiswi terbaik bangsa untuk berkuliah di universitas luar negeri selama 1 semester. Dengan meningkatnya pendaftar pada setiap tahunnya, maka beban panitia untuk menyeleksi esai pendaftar pun meningkat. Namun sumber daya manusia dan waktu yang dimiliki panitia sangat terbatas, sehingga pengklasifikasi esai perlu dibuat agar panitia tidak perlu membaca semua esai dan mempercepat proses penyeleksian. Pada penelitian ini dilakukan klasifikasi esai pendaftar IISMA tahun 2022 menggunakan metode BERT dengan pendekatan 3 label dan 2+2 label dan nilai performa yang dicari adalah akurasi, presisi, recall, dan F1-Score. Data yang digunakan adalah sejumlah 2304 dengan komposisi yang tidak seimbang. Esai yang digunakan adalah esai dengan topik �Explain about your health condition (i.e., dental and oral treatment/medical treatment/covid-19 medication/mental health therapy/counseling)!�. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah performa berupa f1-score untuk model dengan pendekatan 3 label pada masing-masing kelasnya adalah adalah 80% untuk kelas aman, 70% untuk kelas meragukan, dan 50% untuk kelas berisiko. Serta f1- score untuk model dengan pendekatan 2+2 label pada masing-masing kelasnya adalah 88% untuk kelas aman, 70% untuk kelas meragukan, dan 57% untuk kelas berisiko.

IISMA or Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards is one of the programs from the Merdeka Learning curriculum - Merdeka Campus which sends the nation's best students and students to study at foreign universities for 1 semester. With the increase in registrants every year, the committee's burden to select applicants' essays also increases. However, the committee's human resources and time are very limited, so an essay classifier needs to be made so that the committee does not need to read all the essays and speed up the selection process. In this study, the essay classification of IISMA registrants in 2022 was carried out using the BERT method with a 3 label and 2+2 label approach and the performance values sought were accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-Score. The data used are 2304 with an unbalanced composition. The essay used is an essay with the topic �Explain about your health condition (i.e., dental and oral treatment/medical treatment/covid-19 medication/mental health therapy/counseling)!�. The result of this research is that the performance in the form of f1-score for the model with a 3 label approach in each class is 80% for the safe class, 70% for the doubtful class, and 50% for the risk class. And the f1-score for the model with a 2+2 label approach in each class is 88% for the safe class, 70% for the questionable class, and 57% for the risk class.

Eligibility & Required Documents

Eligibility.

To apply for IISMA 2024, you must (be): 

• Undergraduate students in their 4th or 6th semester at recognized universities in Indonesia (Perguruan Tinggi Dalam Negeri – PTDN) under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology; or
• Diploma 3 students in their 4th semester and Diploma 4 students in their 4th or 6th semester at recognized universities offering vocational programs in Indonesia (Perguruan Tinggi Penyelenggara Pendidikan Vokasi – PTPPV) under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology;
• an Indonesian citizen (WNI) currently residing in Indonesia and does not have dual citizenship;
• maximum 24 years old by July 1, 2024; 
• have a cumulative GPA of minimum 3.0 (out of 4.0) proven by the latest academic transcript;
• nominated by Head of Study Program/Head of Department of home university ( PTDN or PTPPV );
• never have taken college leave during study;
• not participate in other Kampus Merdeka flagship programs while taking part in IISMA Program;
• not take any classes at home university during IISMA program;
• not have participated in more than one (1) Kampus Merdeka Flagship Program prior to the IISMA Program;
• submit valid English proficiency certificate with the following minimum scores:*  a. Undergraduate students: i. TOEFL iBT – 78, IELTS – 6.0, or Duolingo English Test – 100, b. Vocational students: i. TOEFL iBT – 60, IELTS – 6.0, Duolingo English Test – 95, or TOEIC Listening and Reading Test – 605, to IISMA’s official institutional code of respective English test*; ( check here) 
• never have violated the rules, norms, and/or laws applied in Indonesia;
• adhere to the rules and regulations while participating in the IISMA program.

KOMPAS.com - Sebanyak 41 mahasiswa Telkom University berhasil lolos beasiswa Indonesian International Student Mobility Award (IISMA) 2024.

Program IISMA 2024 diadakan oleh Kementerian Pendidikan, Kebudayaan, Riset dan Teknologi (Kemdikbud Ristek) untuk menjalankan pendidikan selama satu semester di kampus terkemuka di luar negeri.

Salah satu awardee IISMA 2024 dari Telkom University membagikan strategi agar lolos beasiswa IISMA dari Kemendikbud Ristek .

Nazwa Tazkia Kirana merupakan mahasiswa S1 Sistem Informasi, Fakultas Rekayasa Industri (FRI) 2021 yang berhasil lolos untuk studi di Lomonosov Moscow State University Rusia.

Strategi lolos IISMA 2024 ala mahasiswa Telkom University

Nazwa tertarik studi di kampus tersebut karena memiliki course terkait Customer-Centered Innovations with Design Thinking and Lean User Research yang selama ini ingin dia pelajari.

Sebagai seorang product designer selama kurang lebih 3 tahun, Nazwa telah mengikuti berbagai proyek, bahkan membuat produk secara independen untuk pemecahan masalah.

"Namun saya merasa bahwa there is still room for improvement bagi saya untuk mengembangkan sebuah produk secara maksimal. Itulah kenapa saya ingin belajar dari para top-minds di universitas luar negeri dengan produk digitalnya yang sudah begitu inovatif," ungkap Nazwa seperti dikutip dari laman Telkom University, Rabu (3/4/2024).

Nazwa mengungkapkan, beberapa persiapan yang sebaiknya dilakukan bagi pendaftar IISMA. Diantaranya melakukan konfirmasi terkait urusan administratif akademik terkait konversi SKS, extend semester, dan sebagainya.

"Persiapan lain yang penting yaitu belajar, saya mengikuti kelas persiapan tes Duolingo di Languange Center Telkom University selama 1 minggu, les bahasa inggris, mempersiapkan essay dan menganalisa SWOT saya pribadi bersama orang terdekat," bebernya.

Nazwa memiliki strategi khusus hingga dirinya lolos beasiswa IISMA 2024. Dalam proses seleksi IISMA terdapat tiga tahap yaitu English test (Nazwa menggunakan Duolingo), esai, dan interview.

Untuk Engslish test, Nazwa berpesan pada mahasiswa yang mau mendaftar IISMA tahun depan agar menyisihkan waktu untuk mempelajari struktur tes dan strateginya dibandingkan belajar bahasa Inggris secara umum.

Hal ini karena Duolingo English Test memiliki beberapa tipe pertanyaan yang dapat dirumuskan strateginya di tiap tipe. Hasil tes pasti akan meningkat dibandingkan tanpa strategi.

"Untuk esai, saya rasa yang paling penting adalah bagaimana branding yang kamu ciptakan tentang diri kamu," imbuh Nazwa.

Sedangkan untuk sesi interview , Nazwa menekankan untuk persiapkan pada hal-hal yang tidak terduga. Pahami esai yang dibuat dan buatlah potential questions yang akan ditanyakan.

"Kita juga perlu melakukan riset mengenai negara dan universitas tujuan untuk bisa menjawab pertanyaan tak terduga," tandasnya.

What is the difference between a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse?

It almost time! Millions of Americans across the country Monday are preparing to witness the once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse as it passes over portions of Mexico, the United States and Canada.

It's a sight to behold and people have now long been eagerly awaiting what will be their only chance until 2044 to witness totality, whereby the moon will completely block the sun's disc, ushering in uncharacteristic darkness.

That being said, many are curious on what makes the solar eclipse special and how is it different from a lunar eclipse.

What is an eclipse?

An eclipse occurs when any celestial object like a moon or a planet passes between two other bodies, obscuring the view of objects like the sun, according to NASA .

What is a solar eclipse?

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon comes in between the Earth and the sun, blocking its light from reaching our planet, leading to a period of darkness lasting several minutes. The resulting "totality," whereby observers can see the outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere, known as the corona, presents a spectacular sight for viewers and confuses animals – causing nocturnal creatures to stir and bird and insects to fall silent.

Partial eclipses, when some part of the sun remains visible, are the most common, making total eclipses a rare sight.

What is a lunar eclipse?

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon and the sun are on exact opposite sides of Earth. When this happens, Earth blocks the sunlight that normally reaches the moon. Instead of that sunlight hitting the moon’s surface, Earth's shadow falls on it.

Lunar eclipses are often also referred to the "blood moon" because when the Earth's shadow covers the moon, it often produces a red color. The coloration happens because a bit of reddish sunlight still reaches the moon's surface, even though it's in Earth's shadow.

Difference between lunar eclipse and solar eclipse

The major difference between the two eclipses is in the positioning of the sun, the moon and the Earth and the longevity of the phenomenon, according to NASA.

A lunar eclipse can last for a few hours, while a solar eclipse lasts only a few minutes. Solar eclipses also rarely occur, while lunar eclipses are comparatively more frequent. While at least two partial lunar eclipses happen every year, total lunar eclipses are still rare, says NASA.

Another major difference between the two is that for lunar eclipses, no special glasses or gizmos are needed to view the spectacle and one can directly stare at the moon. However, for solar eclipses, it is pertinent to wear proper viewing glasses and take the necessary safety precautions because the powerful rays of the sun can burn and damage your retinas.

Ethan Crumbley’s Parents Were Just Part of a Much Bigger Problem

James and Jennifer Crumbley never anticipated that their then-15-year-old son, Ethan, would use the 9-millimeter Sig Sauer handgun Mr. Crumbley had bought — ostensibly as an early Christmas present — to kill four students at a Michigan high school. At least that’s the argument their lawyers made in court before Ms. Crumbley, last month, and Mr. Crumbley, almost two weeks ago, were convicted of involuntary manslaughter in separate trials. Prosecutors argued that the Crumbleys did not do enough to secure the gun and ignored warning signs that Ethan was planning to use it.

After every mass shooting by a teenager at a school, there is an instinct to look to the shooter’s parents to understand what went wrong. In the case of the Crumbleys, this seems obvious: Ethan left disturbing journal entries fantasizing about shooting up the school, and stating that he had asked his parents for help with his mental health issues but didn’t get it. His father said the family had a gun safe but the safe’s combination was the default factory setting, 0-0-0.

One factor that’s gotten less attention, however, is how the Crumbleys’ attitudes and actions reflect an increasingly insidious gun culture that treats guns as instruments of defiance and rebellion rather than as a means of last resort.

I’ve been thinking about this case a lot because I grew up in the 1980s and ’90s in a rural part of the Deep South where almost everyone I knew had guns in the house, unsecured, and mental illness was stigmatized and often went untreated. Church was considered a superior venue for counseling, and only “crazy” people sought professional help. If the evidence for criminal negligence is a failure to lock up a gun and ignoring signs of mental illness, many of the adults I grew up around would have been (and still would be) vulnerable to the same charges as the Crumbleys.

It’s convenient and comforting for many people to believe that if it had been their child, they’d have prevented this tragedy. But prison visiting rooms are full of good, diligent parents who never thought their kid would be capable of landing there.

My parents didn’t own a gun safe, but kept guns hidden away from us, which, like many gun owners at the time, they thought of as “secured.” The men in my family were all hunters and the guns they kept were hunting rifles, not AR-15s. (You can’t feed a family with deer meat that’s been blown to bits.) I knew my parents kept a handgun, too, but it was never shown to us, or treated as a shiny new toy.

Gun culture was different then. It would have never occurred to my parents to acquire an entire arsenal of guns and display them prominently around the house, as some people now do, or ludicrously suggest that Jesus Christ would have carried one . They did not, as more than a few Republican politicians have done, send out Christmas photos of their children posing with weapons designed explicitly to kill people at an age when those children likely still believed Santa existed. Open carry was legal, but if you were to walk into the local barbecue joint with a semiautomatic rifle on your back emblazoned with fake military insignia, people would think you were creepy and potentially dangerous, not an exemplar of masculinity and patriotism.

All of these things happen now with regularity, and they’re considered normal by gun owners who believe that any kind of control infringes on their Second Amendment rights. Children are introduced at a young age to guns like the Sig Sauer that Ethan Crumbley used. They’re taught to view guns as emblematic of freedom and the right to self-defense — two concepts that have been expanded to include whatever might justify unlimited accumulation of weapons.

“Freedom” is short for not being told what to do, even though the law very much dictates how and when guns should be used. “Self-defense” is often talked about as a justifiable precaution in the event of home invasion, though home invasions are as rare as four-leaf clovers and do not require an arsenal unless the invader is a small army. (It’s also worth noting that basic home security systems are far less expensive than many popular guns, which suggests that at the very least, some gun owners may be intentionally opting for the most violent potential scenario.) Most important, too many children are taught that guns confer power and can and should be used to intimidate other people. (Relatedly, any time I write about gun control, at least one gun owner emails to say he’d love to shoot me, which is not exactly evidence of responsible gun ownership.)

Mass shooters often begin with a grievance — toward certain populations, individuals they feel wronged by, society at large — and escalate their behavior from fantasizing about violence to planning actual attacks. A study from 2019 suggests that feeling inadequate may make gun owners more inclined toward violence. In the study, gun owners were given a task to perform and then told that they failed it. Later they were asked a number of questions, including whether they would be willing to kill someone who broke into their home, even if the intruder was leaving. “We found that the experience of failure increased participants’ view of guns as a means of empowerment,” wrote one researcher , “and enhanced their readiness to shoot and kill a home intruder.”

The study hypothesized that these gun owners “may be seeking a compensatory means to interact more effectively with their environment.”

Good parents model healthy interactions all the time. If their kids are struggling with a sense of inferiority or are having trouble dealing with failure, we teach them self-confidence and resilience. Parents who treat guns as a mechanism for feeling more significant and powerful are modeling an extremely dangerous way to interact with their environment.

What’s particularly hypocritical here is that the most strident defenders of this culture skew conservative and talk a lot about what isn’t appropriate for children and teenagers. What they think is inappropriate often includes educating kids about sex, about the fact that some people are gay or transsexual and about racism. It’s a perverse state of affairs: Exposing children to simple facts is dangerous, but exposing them to machines designed to kill is not. You can’t get your driver’s license until you’re a teenager, or buy cigarettes and alcohol until you’re 21, but much earlier than that, kids can, with adult supervision, legally learn how to end someone’s life.

Parents can’t ensure that their child won’t ever feel inferior or disempowered, or even in some cases become delusional or filled with rage. Teenagers do things that their parents would never anticipate every day, even if they’re close and communicative. Some develop serious drug habits or become radicalized into extremism or take their own lives.

One thing parents can ensure is that their children cannot get access to a gun in their house. The only foolproof way to do that is to ensure that there’s no gun in the house to begin with. Barring that, parents can make sure they are not reinforcing a toxic gun culture that says that displaying and threatening to use lethal machines is a reasonable way to deal with anger or adversity. That message makes the idea of killing someone seem almost ordinary.

That doesn’t prevent school shooters; it primes them.
