Why an Environmental Education Degree?

Environmental education aims to nurture an understanding of how personal and societal choices affect the earth's ecosystems and inhabitants. Environmental educators also hope to inspire a love of nature, often through outdoor immersion programs and adventure outings. However, they work with children, students, adults, and tourists in both formal and non-formal settings. Some are certified teachers who work in secondary schools, while others plan and run programs at nature centers, parks, or nonprofit organizations.

Environmental Education Undergraduate Programs

Aspiring environmental educators typically earn a bachelor's degree in environmental science , environmental studies , geography, ecology, or a related area; there are few undergraduate programs in environmental education specifically. It's advantageous to choose these degrees, though, since they combine teaching methods and experiential learning with the necessary scientific foundation.

Volunteering for conservation organizations, parks, or summer camps while in college is an excellent way to gain valuable practical experience.

Environmental Educator Certification Programs

An increasing number of states are certifying environmental educators working in both formal and non-formal settings. Certification programs set standards and often require ongoing professional development.

Separate certification is required for public school teachers in all states. Certification requirements vary by state, but always require at least a bachelor's degree, completion of a teacher preparation program, and supervised teaching experience. Many require a general teaching test, background check, and continuing professional development.

School Spotlight

Unity College in the wooded setting of Unity, Maine specializes in environmental science education and hands-on experience. Unity offers two unique degree programs: a B.S. in Adventure-Based Environmental Education and a B.S. in Secondary Education. The secondary education program offers much more than instruction in traditional education techniques; it integrates in-depth studies in natural resources, environmental education, as well as lab work, fieldwork, and teaching assistance. Students learn educational psychology , geographic information systems (GIS) , and how to use field equipment. As undergraduates, students are actively involved in leading experiential learning sessions for local schools and camps. Graduates are prepared to fill roles as much-needed science teachers; in addition to a diploma, they also receive a certification to teach life or physical science in middle school or high school. They're also qualified for positions as park rangers and nature guides. Unity College's Adventure-Based Environmental Education program gives students real-word experience leading wilderness hikes and other activities, such as canoeing and rock climbing. Students also learn pedagogy, how to safely teach through outdoor activities, how to manage traditional and outdoor classrooms, and leadership skills. This program is best for students seeking careers in outdoor, recreational, environmental, and experiential education. Graduates are qualified for positions as educators in schools and nature centers, wilderness guides, and eco-travel professionals. The University of Minnesota, Duluth offers a Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) in Environmental and Outdoor Education. Students learn outdoor education methods, program planning and delivery, program management and evaluation, and principles of recreation. They also spend one full semester in the field in an outdoor educational setting. Graduates are prepared for careers in adventure education, environmental interpretation, environmental education, and other informal education settings that don't require a teaching license.

Graduate Certificates in Environmental Education

Several schools offer graduate certificates in environmental education. These can be a good choice for students with environmental science degrees who want to add education credentials, without committing to a full master's program. Some graduates of traditional education programs who are interested in environmental education may also wish to pursue a certificate.

Hamline University in Minnesota offers a 10-credit graduate certificate in environmental education that's available both traditionally and online. The certificate focuses on environmental concepts and both indoor and outdoor teaching methods. Students may choose courses on ecology, natural history, teaching methods, field biology, and geology.

Master's Degrees in Environmental Education

Graduate programs in this field offer M.A., M.Ed., or M.S. programs, which have different areas of focus. For example, the M.Ed. is generally aligned for educators in formal settings that require teacher certification. The M.A. tends to focus on the social sciences, while M.S. programs are for students who wish to study science and natural resources in greater depth. Aspiring students should choose the program that best fits their backgrounds and goals.

Western Washington University offers an M.Ed. program. Students can choose from two options: a residency focusing on the non-profit sector, or a more traditional program that encompasses environmental education more broadly (either with or without a thesis). The more traditional, on-campus program is a non-thesis option. However, students must design an environmental education field project. The campus-based thesis option is more research-oriented, and suitable for students who want to pursue further study or careers in academia. The non-thesis residency option involves collaboration with the North Cascades Institute (NCI). In addition to the M.Ed., students earn a Certificate in Leadership and Nonprofit Administration from NCI, as well as Northwest Naturalist Certification. Students design curricula and learn about nonprofit management and natural history. They must pass a comprehensive exam. Western Washington University programs do not include teacher certification. New York University offers an M.A. in Environmental Conservation Education that prepares students for careers in formal and non-formal educational settings. The program focuses on the social sciences, including coursework on environmental philosophy, policies, journalism, ethics, and education, as well as science. Fieldwork is a required component. Students also gain real-world experience through NYU's partnerships with museums and environmental education centers, including internship opportunities with a wide range of organizations. Graduates find careers as environmental educators, program managers, and environmental consultants.

Doctoral Programs in Environmental Education

Educators, program managers employed by governments and nonprofits, and others can advance their careers through a doctoral program in environmental education.

Prescott College in Prescott, Arizona is a private, well-ranked college offering a Limited-Residency Ph.D. program in Education with a concentration in Sustainability Education. Students create customized programs of study, including a practicum. Candidates also complete an “action-oriented dissertation” that includes rigorous scholarship. It's a flexible program that allows students to complete most work remotely, with occasional visits to campus.

Employment in Environmental Education

Most environmental educators work for nature centers, national and state parks, and nonprofit environmental organizations. Some work for zoos, aquariums, and arboretums. These types of organizations have limited budgets, which equates to a limited amount of jobs. Due to the interest in this career field competition for jobs is strong. Candidates with practical experience through volunteer work at parks and summer camps will have the best opportunities.

Core Skills You'll Develop While Studying Environmental Education

- Leadership: environmental educators learn how to lead group activities, both in the classroom and outdoors. - Pedagogy: students learn teaching methodology and best practices for both formal and non-formal educational settings. - Communication: students learn to communicate effectively with people of all age ranges and backgrounds. They learn how to explain complex environmental concepts verbally and in writing. They also must give presentations and run group activities. - Critical Thinking: Students learn how to evaluate sustainability challenges and potential solutions, as well as the environmental consequences of individual actions. - Scientific Analysis: students may also learn how to collect, analyze, and interpret environmental data about their local areas, and interpret the information for community groups.

Environmental Education – Master of Science

environmental education graduate programs

Environmental Education, MS

Offered as a Master of Science in Environmental Education

The North American Association for Environmental Educators accredited program provides a unique opportunity, as you will design an environmental education program from the ground up, to be implemented as your culminating experience – Fall in the Field . Based in the cohort model, our program prepares students for a wide range of teaching and leadership positions with nature centers, museums, schools, government agencies, and many others.

Redefining the Classroom

With the rich diversity of the Klamath-Siskiyou bioregion at our doorstep, learn how to take teaching outside and incorporate place-based lessons into your curriculum. Rooted both in the education and biology programs at SOU, the Environmental Education program brings the two worlds together to enable environmental concepts to be taught through a variety of methods.

Fall in the Field

Fall in the Field serves as the capstone project to the Master of Science in Environmental Education. Students in the program build this program from the ground up. You will gain hands-on experience as you work with your fellow students in the graduate program to plan, develop, and implement Fall in the Field. The program is two months of outdoor environmental educational programming delivered to local school groups in the Fall of each year. It consists of both overnight residential programs and day hikes within Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument.

Several of the Environmental Education courses you take will have aspects geared towards preparing you for Fall in the Field. However, there is also so much more. For instance, in Special Methods in Environmental Education, EE 525, you will learn how to make curriculum and activities meet educational standards and be place-based. But, you will also learn interpretive techniques for when you are leading guided hikes and how to develop a captivating and informational interpretive sign.

The courses offered through the Environmental Education program are made to cater to a wide variety of needs for a wide variety of career paths. Our instructors understand that environmental education means many different things to different people, and strive to prepare all of our students for any profession in the field they might pursue.

Internships

As part of the Master of Science in Environmental Education program, you will learn from dynamic professionals in the field through one or more internships with local organizations and government agencies while building your resume. Graduate students are required to complete 60 hours of internship, with a diverse range of opportunities to choose from.

These internships provide an avenue to branch out and develop new skills while providing a service to the community. Many local environmental education providers are eager to work with our students, providing experiences that meet individual needs. Whether you want more experience as a teacher or grant writer, in marketing or event planning, or all of them at once, there is an internship out there for you.

Additional Options

  • Master of Arts in Teaching   (with licensure option)
  • Certificate in Nonprofit Management
  • Project or Thesis

Please contact us for more information about how each of these might affect admission and program requirements.

Degree Fit Icon

Degree Completion

Every student in the Environmental Education program is an active participant of the planning process and implementation of Fall in the Field. This 8-week environmental education program takes place every fall with day programs in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument and overnight programs in Southern Oregon. Environmental Education students plan this program from the ground up, utilizing the wealth of experience of the professors and the institutional knowledge of previous cohorts.

Completion Options

Before graduating, every student will complete an exit interview reviewing their leadership, teaching skills and accomplishments as observed through the program and Fall in the Field. Additionally, each student will choose from one of three completion options: exam, project, and thesis, selected at the beginning of the program. The exam is presented orally by a panel of professors from the Environmental Education and Biology programs, and one professor from another program such as physics or business. If a student chooses to do a project or thesis, instead of receiving an examination from the panel of professors, they will have to defend their final product.

What you'll learn

  • Justice-oriented education involves examining our personal relationships to systems of oppression, developing asset-based understandings of the youth we work with, and leveraging youths’ cultural and linguistic resources to design inclusive teaching and learning environments.
  • Knowledge of ecology and natural habitats is essential to creating healthier relationships between human communities and the natural world.
  • Education is most successful when teachers honor the cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, and religious diversity in their classroom.
  • Meaningful education grows out of thoughtfully guided experiences and reflection.
  • In learning communities, everyone can contribute as both teacher and student.
  • An integrated, experiential curriculum combining science, technology and the arts allows individuals with different learning styles and aptitudes to succeed.
  • Education should help students balance their individuality with their responsibilities as members of human and natural communities.
  • Environmental and experiential education is most effective when it relates to real-life experiences in the student’s home community.
  • A sustainable future depends upon strengthening our respect for one another and the natural world.

After graduation

Students who complete this program earn a Graduate Certificate in Education for Environment and Community and are well prepared to join M.I.T. or M.Ed. programs.

Once at IslandWood, students can apply to the  Elementary Teacher Education Program (ELTEP) . While our program fulfills prerequisites and can provide experiences that enhance your application to this highly competitive program, completing the IslandWood graduate program does not guarantee acceptance.

The ELTEP has a strong social justice component and provides students with significant practical teaching experience in the Washington state public school system. The Elementary Education program begins the summer after the IslandWood year and IslandWood coursework meets all prerequisites for the program.

You may find ways to complete your M.I.T. or earn teacher certification in less time, but IslandWood’s program provides experience and skills that will help make you a competitive candidate in the M.I.T. admissions process.

With only two additional quarters (six months) after islandWood, you can put your IslandWood education toward earning your master’s degree with a specialization in science education.

Hannah Baker with a turtle at the Little Rock Zoo in Arkansas

Hannah Baker currently works as the Curator of Ambassador Animals at the Little Rock Zoo in Little Rock, Arkansas.  She began as an intern at the zoo in 2011, and was recently promoted to her current position. She now manages a collection of just over 170 animals in the zoo's Conservation Education department and a team of 12 staff members. The animals she gets to work with on a daily basis include reptiles, small mammals, birds of prey, a breeding colony of African Penguins, and the animals that make up the Heritage Farm exhibit. Her position allows her to make decisions about the zoo's animal care standards, breeding and transfers, collection planning, conservation work, and educational messaging. She received her BS in Biology at the University of Central Arkansas in 2011, and will graduate from SRU this summer with an MEd in Environmental Education. Rachel Barkley: Navigating Environmental Assessment and Shaping a New Career Path

Rachel Barkeley NC State Online Master of Environmental Assessment Student

For Rachel Barkley, a seasoned professional in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, the decision to enroll in the NC State online Master of Environmental Assessment program was more than a career pivot — it was a reclaiming of her passion for environmental work.

Barkley finished her undergraduate degree in 2011 and remembers still feeling the lingering impact of the 2008 economic crisis. “While I wanted to pursue an environmental job, I needed money to buy goods and services. RTP was, and is, a hotbed for pharma and biotech, so I found a job in that industry. The problem with that is the longer you stay, the harder it is to get out,” she explained.

After working in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries for over 10 years, she decided to shift her focus back to environmental stewardship. She was concerned that transitioning to this new career path would feel like starting over. To test the waters before committing to a full master’s program, Barkley first pursued a Graduate Certificate in Environmental Assessment at NC State in 2015.

Those initial first steps into graduate education highlighted the challenges that non-traditional students often encounter. “Traditional grad schools seem to want people under a certain age — I couldn’t shake the feeling that many programs want students without too much real-world experience or other commitments,” she explained. “The certificate in 2017 gave me confidence, but I realized applying to other schools that I needed to reconsider what I’d do.”

Like many working professionals, Barkley did not want to have to choose between supporting her family financially and pursuing her educational goals. The NC State Master of Environmental Assessment program offered a different approach, one where Barkley’s rich industry experience and personal commitments were not seen as impediments.

The program is designed for working professionals and can be completed entirely online. Its flexibility, coupled with her positive experience in the graduate certificate program, ultimately solidified her decision to commit to the master’s program at NC State.

Experience in the Master of Environmental Assessment Program

For Barkley, the transition from the certificate to the master’s program was almost seamless. This was largely thanks to the ability to transfer most of her credits. “Having done both, the one major difference between the certificate and the master’s is the thesis,” she said, emphasizing the flexibility of both programs.

Balancing a demanding job, rigorous academic commitments and family life was made possible due to a strong support network. “My spouse has been a huge help, and I don’t think any of my success would be possible without him,” she shared.

She also emphasized the importance of having a reliable support system beyond the classroom. She credits a circle of friends who assisted with everyday tasks — whether it was housekeeping, meal preparation, or study sessions at the library.

Barkley also found tremendous support within the program itself. She highlighted the role of faculty members like Assistant Teaching Professor Tamara Pandolfo and Professor Elizabeth Nichols in her academic journey. “Dr. Pandolfo was my adviser for my master’s and through some pretty rocky personal crises, she was great to work with,” Barkley shared.

She was particularly impressed by the program’s flexibility in accommodating unforeseen life challenges. “I’ve heard from students in so many other programs that you end up at the mercy of the program if things get really difficult or get zero accommodations. I really can’t think of any professor I don’t have a good relationship with because I always feel treated with respect and understanding,” she explained.

Advice and Future Plans

For working professionals considering an online degree, Barkley offered valuable insights. “What stood out about this program is the writing. There are a few quizzes and some assignments, but the bulk of your time will be spent researching and writing.” She also appreciated the program’s focus on allowing students to explore topics of personal interest.

Barkley encourages prospective students to leverage the supportive nature of the program. “Every professor tries to work with you and always tries to be available for your questions,” she said. For those juggling demanding jobs, she advises maintaining close communication with professors to navigate the challenges of balancing work and academic commitments.

She is already experiencing the benefits of her studies in her professional life. “Doing the certificate actually helped me formulate and figure out the topic of my master’s thesis,” she shared. The thesis, which blends her background in pharma with her environmental studies, is a source of pride and something she hopes to publish soon.

Looking to the future, Barkley sees her degree as a critical step toward pivoting to a new career in environmental assessment.

When asked about her plans for celebrating her graduation, she is committed to keeping it simple. “I haven’t thought about going to a commencement ceremony. I think I’ll just want to have a nice trip or dinner with my family.”

Barkley moves forward, knowing that she is equipped with the skills to shift into a new career with confidence. With the right support, she is prepared to overcome life’s obstacles while in pursuit of a dream worth chasing.
